Breathing Square
JFS347 DESIGN STATEMENT
Breathing Square intends to create an integrated indoor and outdoor environment for the community and tourists to connect the Mira Avenue, the Vyzvolennia Square and the DASU building and surroundings. With the new setting, enormous public space opportunities are created to connect the site, to connect the people and to enhance the bond between the community and the land. The design creates a place that is safe to play, comfortable to relax, enjoyable to travel and flexible to host events and festivals. Air pollution as a concern of the site became the focal point in the design proposal. Designing with planting materials, landforms and technologies, the spaces are full of opportunities for people to explore and wander. There are play areas for all ages, dining spaces for families and friends, large open spaces for event organisers and movie nights for adventurers. The square is the core for connection and identity of the site. Historical memorial, relocated to the centre of the entire site, will be the remembrance of the space in the past, present and the future. By reconfiguring the site level, the design proposal emphasises on the right to the place for all through providing universal access including ramps and stairs to the square and the surrounding buildings.

DESIGN INSPIRATION
A series of filtering layers in the space filter air pollutants
Overall site arrangement is inspired by the notion of creating a healthy, sustainable and integrated environment for the community. Due to the geographical location of the site, air pollution, brought by prevailing wind, is a dangerous factor for the users. Therefore, the design intends to create a gradient filtering system that will mitigate air pollution in the site. Filtering layers applied in the space filter based on wind field in the space

8
By relocating the existing memorial into the centre of the square, it provokes the memories of its history and preserves the importance of its identity. Utilising the same design language and materials (folding form, existing walls and paving), the design gives the new meaning to the square and activates how all people can engage the space.

The design proposes two lighting types as an artistic expression. One is for day to day uses, while the other one is for festivals, fairs, exhibitions and other events. Event organisers can utilise the artistic lighting poles for event promotion and decoration. Artists can exhibit their work in the square. That activates the site and invites more engagement from the community.

ACTIVITY SCHEME Design for the community and tourists, the new Vyzvolennia Square offers greater opportunities in accommodating festivals, yearly fairs and events. BUILDING FUNCTION enjoy the fun and beauty, the building users can also build up the visual connections, especially for co-working space on the first floor. More than that, the court is a outdoor theatre with movie nights held through the IMAX screen for all. Movable chairs can be set and stored in the building for the convenience of the
community. When it gets to harvest season in summer, movable and foldable stalls of fruit, vegetable and are placed next to Community Houses, Fiscal service and Restaurant. The public spaces provides an opportunity for communities to connect, which activates the public space
and enhances the connection between outdoor and indoor environment. Integrating with street space on Mira Avenue and amphitheatre in the Vyzvolennia Square, artistic works can be displayed on raised garden walls and terraced walls to connect Mira Avenue to the square. In autumn, various festivals are
held in the square including food fair and charity fair. Outdoor dinning area adjacent to DASU is the ideal place for food fair, which can be extended to the food court on the first floor at DASU to accommodate more people or on raining days. The most exciting events are the Xmas and New Year’s Fairs. The
lightings are decorated with holiday art crafts. Proposed pine trees are perfect for Xmas decorations, along with ice-skating, snow playing in the amphitheatre. Parents can be accompanied with all resting spaces around. More importantly, with the accessible ramp and stairs, the space is designed for all during festivals and holidays all year round.
Integrating DASU with the surrounding landscape, building functions are set to maximise the uses of indoor and outdoor spaces. The basement area is to maintain the routine function of the building. The first floor features recreational spaces and dining area for the convenience of the community groups with the physical and visual connections to the square. Educational sections are primarily located on third, four and five floor with a roof garden on third flood. That provides lunch, gathering, relaxing spaces for students and staff of those schools. From sixth floor and above, the admin and owner can use those spaces as officer with excellent views to the new square, the Mira Avenue and to resting of the city.
