THE VYZVOLENNIA SQUARE LANDSCAPING AND REVITALIZATION OF THE DASU BUILDING WITH ADJACENT TERRITORY MARIUPOL, UKRAINE ”You glorify the foreign, but you don‘t know your own” The purpose of the Project is to initiate a path guiding the industrial society back to the regional roots. The Concept is inspired by the history, tradition and nature of Mariupol and its surroundings. On the way forward to the past, the Project presents modern features like additional functionality, diversity, sustainability and countless opportunities for seasonal and purposive adaptation. Looking at the plot and presented solutions one could see a chameleon changing its colours and rolling its eye being the main construction in the middle of the square. This diversity gathers whole society together. The revitalised square is the place where diverse people coexist

and each other. This place is a market; it is a theatre, a restaurant, a gym, a garden, a monument, a museum, a playground, a pond, an ice rink, a chessboard, and a shipyard for . It is the Heart of the city.
Each connecting street is as an artery, which invites every guest to the main square and gives the foretaste of the highlight. Streets kept simple, green, clean and wild at the same time are easy to maintain and pleasant for a passer-by. Based on this vision, the project reveals possible, future extension of the design site. Suggested of Zems‘ka Street, Heorhiivs‘ka Street and Koval‘s‘kyi Ln introduces additional harmony in the entire concept and
creates gentle gates to the main square. The new proposal allows reintegration of the non-functional streets into dynamic strategy, giving new life to the presented area.
The Project offers return of the square to its historical purpose as „market square“. The canopy „circle“ is new interpretation of the wooden trade stalls that were present on the square at the beginning of the 20th century. Presented light timber structure with wooden tiled roof ensures sustainability and wide spectrum of potential adjustments. It transforms depending on the needs of its users, who there the perfect spot for exhibitions, playgrounds, auctions, chess tournaments, lectu-
res... The central core of the tag is a multifunctional space (fountain, ice rink in winter, concert venue or shallow lake) depending on the season. The main purpose of the square and adjacent streets is to create new nucleus of attraction. Unique place that combines modernist strategies and the authenticity of the region. All adjacent streets are a green buffer, not loaded with a strong transport function. They provide potential space for restaurants, cafes, bars and a „park recreation area“ on the way to the square and its open space with the central multi-functional canopy and the fountain. There is an additional green zone along the perimeter of the square as the main area for cafes and restauran ts.
Another feature of the Project is the new functionality of the Dasu building and its courtyards. It was decided to leave the visual authenticity of the building. As a result, the main structure of this complex stays untouched. Performing small changes in the facade, frontal ground and the courtyard area all visitors enjoy modern space, which got integrated to the entire design site. The visible, giant wooden terrace provides not only visual, but also functional connection. The Project focuses on energy-saving technologies (additional building insulation, sun-protection rails, „galvanized sheet steel“ used for the rear-ventilated facade system), which makes its for the environment. Transforming courtyards for
various kinds of functions (festivals, cinema, and exhibitions) and offering possibility to have closed events differentiates the space from the open main square. Additional attraction is the Secret garden, which was designed in order to implement compositional balancing of the building structure of the square at the intersection of Myru Ave and Mykolaivs‘ka Street. It was decided to build there a „temporary, light, green construction“ and apply wood made of local materials. The garden space may offer a place for relaxation or small lectures. visible green areas present local plants, which can be found in Mariupol and its surroundings. The Project brings a wild oasis in the center of the city. Each little square is sown with regional treasure seeds. All the green spots create a museum of local and a shelter for bees and other insects, which are being followed by birds that are now spending their time in the crowns of new trees. The main Materials in the presented concept are wood and locally manufactured yellow brick, which is the modern paving stone. This combination provides a historic look to the renovated square.
