We’re delighted to welcome the author Sarah Churchwell as part of a new partnership with the Hay Festival, and we very much look forward to seeing Theatr Genedlaethol’s latest production Tylwyth by Dafydd James. I hope you find this a varied programme with something for everyone. All this, daily cinema and much more to come over the coming season!

Behold, America: A History of ‘America First’ An evening with Sarah Churchwell £12 £10 students and under 18s Join us for a fascinating insight into the history of ‘America First’, a favourite slogan of Donald Trump and his supporters. Although popular wisdom attributes the phrase to Charles Lindbergh and the isolationist ‘America First Committee’ of 1940-1941, in fact the expression has a longer, darker history than that, a story of nativism and the Ku Klux Klan, of protectionism, ‘100% Americanism,’ and isolationism, and of a homegrown fascism that America continues to pretend ‘can’t happen here.’ English language event Age guidance 14+

A hat is a great thing, it keeps you warm, and it can change the way you look, but what if it could do more than that? What if your dreams could come true? Good news? Or a nightmare.
Lleisiau’r Stryd Street Voices Following on from the success of our cross-generational project ‘Lleisiau / Voices’ in 2017 and ‘Ein Lleisiau / Our Voices’ in 2018, this year we gave a voice to people who have found themselves homeless. This is the culmination of an intergenerational project with the service users of Saint
Mary’s Hostel, Bangor and North Wales Housing, and Drama and Health and Social Care students from Ysgol Friars, led by BLAS. Ten students were given an introduction to the work of St Mary’s Hostel by the Hostel’s Manager, Hayley Owen, before getting to know some of the hostel’s community
Circus Feast Procession BLAS worked with Ysgol Glancegin, Ysgol Hirael, Ysgol Y Faenol and Ysgol Glanadda along side the artist Nerys Jones to create costumes for the 2019 Circus Feast Procession along Bangor High Street to officially open Pontio’s Circus Feast . The artwork was inspired by African colours and Welsh patterns and the work was seen draped on the walls of Pontio over the summer. The children also learned about the continent of Africa from members of the North Wales
and Africa Society and how to Samba dance with dancer Angharad Harrop to ensure a vibrant procession. As well as these schools, Ysgol Tryfan’s Jazz Band led the procession, Abyssinia Circus Company performed and Codi’r To ensured energy at the back of the parade.
over a period of five weeks. The conversations between pupils and individuals were recorded and then developed into a verbatim play by the pupils under the guidance of playwright and theatre practitioner Branwen Davies. The play for voices was read as a part of an evening to celebrate the work.
Cross generational Art Project BLAS worked with Caffi Hafan, Bangor, Age Cymru Gwynedd a Môn and Ysgol Tryfan over a period of ten weeks. Art students from Ysgol Tryfan visited Caffi Hafan in Bangor to hold art workshops with people who had retired, as a means of tackling loneliness. The students worked with the older people on ideas and teaching each other different art skills and forms. Their work was supported by artists Eleri Jones and Nerys Jones. Some of the artwork created during these workshops will be on display in Pontio’s Cabinet throughout February. 19

Gandini Juggling
Sigma £15 £13 concessions Sigma is a spectacular cross art-form production from Gandini Juggling with dazzling Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Seeta Patel. The production showcases exuberant rhythms, patterns and colours, celebrating the dialogue between the worlds of juggling, music and classical Indian dance. Sigma is performed by a virtuosic cast, which includes Seeta Patel & Indu Panday specialists in Bharatanatyam and Kati Ylä-Hokkala & Kim Huynh - pioneering jugglers from Gandini Juggling. The lighting design is by renowned
designer Guy Hoare who frames the space architecturally, adding to the complex patterns made by balls and limbs. Multimedia projections by Zsolt Balogh compliment the onstage action where projection is used to introduce abstract geometry and act as a visual counterpoint to the flow and rhythm of the juggling. Mutli-layered composition from Andy Cowton and costume design by Lydia Cawson add a depth and texture to the piece successfully weaving all into an assault on the senses. Age guidance: 8+
Art Project Be amazed by works of art on display in Pontio’s public spaces, created by students from the Art Foundation Course at Coleg Menai in response to Sigma.

The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy
Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell. In 1969 with his brother Finbar, he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem throughout the USA and Canada. In 1971 he moved to mainland Europe where he toured for seven years. Bangor University Symphony Orchestra £15 £12 over 60s £5 students and under 18s Chris Collins conductor Leonard Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story Amy Beach Gaelic North west Wales’s very own symphony orchestra presents two American masterpieces. Leonard Bernstein devised his Symphonic Dances four years after the first performance of West Side Story on Broadway in 1957. The work captures the drama, colour and rhythmic
vitality of one of the greatest musicals ever written, its themes of love, violence and loss brought together in a symphonic suite of astonishing intensity. The New Hampshire-born composer Amy Beach wrote her Gaelic Symphony in 1894. Building on the example of Dvořák’s contemporaneous New World Symphony, it adapts themes from the ancestral Celtic traditions of many of the habitants of the north-east
United States. It is tuneful, bold, and exciting, and after many years in the shadows it is finally receiving due recognition as the greatest American symphony of the nineteenth-century. The concert also includes a concerto performance by the winner of Bangor University’s annual soloist competition.

BBC NOW’s leader Lesley Hatfield directs this programme of delightful works that include one of Mozart’s most celebrated concertos and Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece for string orchestra. Mozart, himself a fine player of both the violin and viola, allows his unusual combination of soloists to shine while giving the orchestra more to say, resulting in a rich dialogue. Prokofiev’s study for
aspiring violin soloists can be played by either solo or unison strings, and it represents him at his most charming. In Tchaikovsky’s homage to Mozart and the 18th century he explores what a string section can really do, in four very contrasting movements of melodic richness.

These are songs written from within the depths of a house, during stolen moments. About new motherhood, and the search for ritual. About being lost, and being found again. About gardens growing under doors in the depths of night, and days being let back in through a window.

Mozart: Requiem £15 £12 over 60s £5 students and under 18s Chris Collins conductor Mozart Requiem Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K.550 The University Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presents an all-Mozart programme, including two well-known late works that have much in common. Both are marked by a sombre
54
melodic beauty that few composers have matched subsequently. Both works explore the darker colour of the orchestral palette, with particularly effective use of cellos, double basses, clarinets and (in the Requiem) trombones. Moreover, both works are distinguished by the fact that Mozart never heard them; the Requiem, indeed, was his very final work, still not
quite completed at his death on 5 December 1791. Paired together, the Requiem and the G Minor Symphony offer an intensely moving musical experience.
