On Relentless.Unstoppable.Human. Machine's exclusive run before the London Roundhouse première by Pirates of the Carabina

Welcome to our May-August 2018 season You, the audience, decide… As we look towards the summer season, we’re delighted to welcome back a number of national companies – Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, National Theatre Wales, Welsh National Opera and Ballet Cymru. For those of you who experienced Smashed and 4x4 Ephemeral Architectures, the unique Gandini Juggling return with their brand new production Spring, which is an innovative combination of dance and juggling and Casus Circus company from Australia visit Bangor for the first time with their show Driftwood – a concise and lyrical production which celebrates relationships.

Our participatory activity also present the fruits of their labour, with a performance by the youngsters from BLAS and a verbatim play by young people following the collection and sharing of stories at local care homes. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the programme will be Shakespeare's Globe visit to Pontio as

part of a national and international tour of Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice, beginning and ending at The Globe. We’ll be turning the theatre into a space that resembles the Globe itself – with space to stand in the middle – and in the spirit of Shakespearean tradition, the company will allow you, the audience, to decide which of the three plays you would like to see, with the voting mechanism to be determined over the course of rehearsals… Join us for a new season and get ready for some truly unique theatrical experiences! Friday 11 May 7.30pm Gandini Juggling

Spring Theatr Bryn Terfel £15/£13 10% discount for groups of 10 or more £25/£20 to see the show and take part in the workshop on 10 May Formed in 1992 by worldrenowned jugglers Sean Gandini and Kati YläHokkala, Gandini Juggling continue to be at the forefront of contemporary circus, reinventing and reinvigorating juggling for the 21st century. Gandini Juggling and Alexander Whitley have joined forces to create a new show. Adventurous and kaleidoscopic, Spring is an enquiry into the nature of colour and how we perceive it. A cross art form production, Spring challenges impressions of movement and physicality, embracing deconstructed rhythms and jubilant patterning. Featuring virtuoso jugglers and contemporary dancers, Spring takes these tangible and visceral art forms into new territories - and further establishes the relationships between them.

Performed to an original score by Gabriel Prokofiev and with eye-popping lighting from Guy Hoare, it is set to be wondrous, transcendent and prismatic. Spring is the third and final part of Gandini Juggling’s trilogy of flirtations between juggling and elaborate dance languages which began with 4x4 Ephemeral Architectures and Sigma. Spring is co-produced with Cambridge Junction (UK); London International Mime Festival (UK); and Plateforme 2 pôles Cirque en Normandie / La Brèche à Cherbourg et le CirqueThéâtre d’Elbeuf (FR). Spring is supported by artsdepot (UK); Arts Council England; Birmingham Hippodrome (UK); CIRCa pôle National des Arts du Cirque Auch Gers Occitanie (FR); Lighthouse Poole (UK); Theatre Op de Markt (BE). 8

Thursday 17 May 7.30pm Theatr Mwldan presents

Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita (Wales/Senegal) with Gwyneth Glyn Theatr Bryn Terfel £20/£18 This sublime, critically acclaimed and multi award-winning collaboration between two adventurous virtuoso musicians - Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita - delivers a stunning exhibition of worldclass musicianship. Catrin and Seckou will be joined at Pontio by Gwyneth Glyn as support artist. Poet, writer and singer of songs, Gwyneth comes from Cricieth in North Wales and will be performing material from her new album 'Tro'.

Drawing deep on their own diverse traditions and transforming them with remarkable synergy, Catrin and Seckou have built a formidable reputation for extraordinary performances. Following the huge success of their debut release, their longawaited second album 'SOAR' launches in April 2018. The album takes flight on the wings of the osprey, the magnificent bird of prey recently returned to Wales after centuries of absence, which makes its annual 3,000-mile migration from 19

the coasts of West Africa to the estuaries of Wales, soaring like music and dreams over man-made borders, in an innate and epic journey of endurance. Entrancing, mesmeric, intricate and ethereal, this is remarkable music and a thrilling live experience. "oh my God, incredible… you’re witnessing a state of rapture, it’s entrancing" Toby Jones, actor

We also know that the choice of play or entertainment was left to the most powerful person of the household. So following in the tradition of our resident playwright, and in a first

for Shakespeare’s Globe, between May and August 2018, a company of 8 actors will offer audiences a choice of three plays: The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night. They will perform all three at the Globe before setting out on a national and international tour. Join us here at Pontio as Shakespeare’s Globe on Tour perform their only dates in Wales. Never afraid of a challenge, we’ll

set about transforming Theatr Bryn Terfel to offer that ‘Globe’ experience, with standing positions available as well as seats. In keeping with tradition - and with thrilling unpredictability - the choice of play will be put back into the hands of the most powerful members of the house: the audience. ‘Thy frank election make’ (All’s Well That Ends Well, Act 2 Scene 3)

The Merchant of Venice

The Taming of the Shrew

In Venice, the epicentre of consumption, speculation and debt, Bassanio borrows money from his friend Antonio to finance his attempt to win the hand of Portia, a wealthy heiress. Antonio, in turn, takes out a loan from the moneylender Shylock. The loan will be repaid when Antonio’s ships return to the city. But if they should fail, and the money cannot be repaid, Antonio shall give to Shylock a pound of his own flesh. And they do fail. And Shylock will have his ‘bond’.

Two wealthy sisters in Padua must be married off. The modest, demure Bianca has no shortage of suitors, but who on earth will take the wild, ungovernable, ‘shrewish’ Kate? Perhaps the gold-digging Petruchio, as maddeningly strong-willed and perverse as Kate herself, will be equal to the task of bullying her to the altar.

In some of his most highly-charged scenes, Shakespeare dramatizes the competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, justice and mercy, while in the character of Shylock he created one of the most memorable outsiders in all theatre.

Shakespeare’s outrageous comedy introduces one of theatre’s great screwball double-acts, a couple hellbent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to its controversial conclusion.

36

Twelfth Night In the household of the Countess Olivia, two campaigns are being quietly waged - one by the lovesick Duke Orsino against the heart of the indifferent Olivia; the other by an alliance of servants and hangers-on against the high-handedness of her steward, the pompous Malvolio. When Orsino engages the cross-dressed Viola to plead with Olivia on his behalf, a bittersweet chain of events follows. Filled with a cast of unforgettable characters, Twelfth Night combines cruelty with high comedy and the pangs of unrequited love with some of the subtlest poetry and most exquisite songs Shakespeare ever wrote.

Director Brendan O’Hea, director and actor, has previously performed in a number of productions at Shakespeare’s Globe including Cymbeline (2015), Measure for Measure (2015), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2014) and Henry V (2012).

Brendan O’Hea ‘The combination of Shakespeare, the Globe and touring ticks every box for me. The chance to share those glorious words and my experience of playing that beautiful theatre with audiences throughout the world excites me beyond measure. And I’m relishing

the opportunity to direct three of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in a unique and unpredictable presentation.’ Designer Andrew D Edwards Composer Bill Barclay Choreographer Siân Williams

'Charley Bach' – Gwyn Llewelyn in conversation with Charles Duff Studio £12 Charles Duff grew up in many worlds at once. Like an enfilade, one led into another, but each was distinct and self-contained. At his family's country house, 'Vaynol', Royalty mingled with eccentric relations and glamorous socialites, supported by a colourful ensemble cast of cooks, nannies and butlers. In London, Charley met his father's boyfriends and his mother's lesbian lovers, as well as leading artists, musicians and directors.

Through the theatre, he discovered his vocation in academia and teaching. But these worlds did not co-exist in harmony. As the estate faced ruin and his parents' marriage fell apart, Charley's relationship with his family festered. He was known to be adopted, and speculation about his identity fanned rumours that many still believe today. Charles Duff’s newlypublished, exquisitely vivid memoir Charley’s Woods draws a detailed and unidealised picture of the 38

Ein Lleisiau/Our Voices Studio £3 A reading of a verbatim “Our Voices – A Play For Voices” by the students of Ysgol Friars, Bangor.

Care students from Ysgol Friars, led by BLAS, Pontio’s arts participation programme for young people.

Following on from the success of last year’s crossgenerational project Lleisiau/ Voice, this year we shall explore further the power of conversation between young people and those living with dementia, in bridging worlds and alleviating isolation.

This evening sees the culmination of an intergenerational project with the residents of Glyn Menai, Fairways Care Home and Drama and Health and Social

50

This special evening will be hosted by Gwion Hallam, presenter, writer and 2017 National Eisteddfod Crowned poet, whose winning poem was inspired by the theme of dementia.
