Day
In our autumn season we bring back old friends, offer familiar themes and create new experiences at Pontio, deepening our relationship with creative partners and building on our links with local communities and students. We extend a warm welcome back to audience favourite, circus company Ockham’s Razor, who will give us a theatrical experience to remember, full of human tenderness. Our Welsh language Theatr Genedlaethol will present a Welsh stage adaptation of Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle by Mererid Hopwood with singer Gwenno as part of the production – and Sibrwd translation provided. We invite alumni of Bangor University’s Comedy Society back with their own professional show and celebrate the vocal talents of present students joined by seasoned Côr Seiriol and Côr Y Brythoniaid from the local area.
We’ll also bring you our second Fun Palace and a special ‘Evening with’ the inspirational writer, Jan Morris. There’ll be regular film and live screenings and monthly family shows. Only Men Aloud and Calan make a return, and with an Evening of Eric and Ern at Christmas and What a Wonderful Life you’re all sure to get into the festive spirit. Throughout this season and beyond, may Pontio’s doors be open for everyone, of all ages and backgrounds, to discover, experience and share the magic and wonder the arts can offer. Onwards!
An inaugural festival by Bangor University’s School of History, classical and crossover concerts, folk music from Scotland and an innovative fusion of music from Wales and Brazil are just a taste of the offer in store this season.

Visual Art
Susan Williams Trace Trace visually explores how humanity has altered the visual appearance of the North Wales landscape. Using aerial videography as source material, Susan constructs digital and laser manufactured images incorporating drawing and painting. The project builds on an earlier body of work, Drawing from the Land, which visually described the quarried
10
landscape of North Wales including Parys Mountain and The Great Orme. For Trace, Susan revisits this rich seam of visual and metaphorical subject matter, pushing her visual language and ideas further through the use of digital technologies. Trace is an Arts Council of Wales Research and Development project aimed at enabling Susan to experiment with digital
technologies to change her regular painting practice. Susan has used the facilities at Pontio Innovation’s fabLAB space to realise her ideas. Come and meet the artist and discuss the findings of her project between 12-2pm on Saturday 7th September. No need to book – just call in.

Friday 27 September 7.30pm Theatr Bryn Terfel Pontio presents
A Celebratory Concert CÔR AELWYD JMJ, CÔR SEIRIOL, CÔR Y BRYTHONIAID £10 Presenter: Anni Llŷn Soloists: Gwen Elin & Cai Fôn Join us for an evening of vocal music guaranteed to give you goosebumps! There’s no denying the success of Aelwyd JMJ at Eisteddfod yr Urdd in Cardiff this year. Aelwyd Urdd JMJ, the Welsh language halls of residence at Bangor University, had an Eisteddfod to remember as they won medals in six vocal competitions: the vocal ensemble, the cerdd dant choir, the women’s group, the male group and the choir up to 40 in number and the choir over 40 in number – they swept the board!
Tonight you can hear them all back on home turf at Bangor University’s Pontio. Joining them will be two well known local choirs that have won numerous prizes themselves over the years. We welcome Côr Seiriol, led by Gwennant Pyrs, a choir that has won the main prize at the Gŵyl Gerdd Dant festival more than ten times. Joining them will be Côr Meibion y Brythoniaid from the Blaenau Ffestiniog area, a choir that won the main prize recently at the Mrs Sutherland Festival in Huddersfield and led by John Eifion. Both choirs come together to create Llechan Lân, who are sure to raise the roof in Theatr Bryn Terfel.
With the Bryn Terfel Scholarship competition on the horizon, we’re also delighted to invite a former Bangor University student and former winner of the Prize, Gwen Elin and one of this year’s competitors Cai Fôn, to the stage. Cai is currently in his second year studying Music and Welsh at Bangor University and will head down to Barry to compete in October. A true feast of song awaits you… Pre Theatre Menu available in Cegin

Thursday 3 October 8pm Studio Suzi Ruffell
Dance Like Everyone’s Watching £14 £12 concessions Suzi Ruffell has made a name for herself by turning tragedy and anxiety into big laughs. This year she is actually happy. This show answers the question: are all stand-ups at their best when they are miserable? Fingers crossed no!
The last twelve months have been massive for Ruffell; a smash hit UK tour, heaps of television appearances including; Live At The Apollo, Hypothetical, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and she has learnt how to make the perfect lemon cake.
Of course, the world is still completely f**ked – so don’t worry, it won’t be too joyous. A mix of storytelling, observations, a dash of social politics and a lovely routine about a smear test. This show has everything.
Come and see what all the fuss is about!

£16 £5 students and under 18s Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams is widely admired for his profound musical intelligence, and for the expressive and communicative nature of his interpretations. An acclaimed performer of Beethoven, he has several complete sonata cycles under his belt, most recently at Wigmore Hall and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, as well as a Concerto cycle with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The 2019-20 season sees Llŷr Williams continuing his collaboration with the BBC

Williams also returns to the Edinburgh Festival in August 2019, while for the Beethoven anniversary season he will offer a complete sonata cycle at the Festival Cultural de Mayo in Guadalajara, Mexico and partial cycles in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Williams’ eclectic repertoire is reflected in his discography; his 12-CD Box set ‘Beethoven Unbound’, from the Wigmore
Hall Beethoven cycle (Signum Records), was BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Recording of the Month’ in August 2018. Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18 £12 £10 students and under 18s
Joia! is a bold, innovative and colourful collection of songs sung in Welsh combined with distinct pop and Latin American flavours drawn from Bossa Nova, Cumbia, Samba and Tropicalismo styles. This is the first solo release for Carwyn Ellis under his own name. The Colorama frontman has spent much of the last two years touring the world as a sideman with the Pretenders, and it was Chrissie Hynde herself who noticed how many records Carwyn was buying while on tour in South America in early 2018 and 26 suggested he make a Latin-
flavoured Welsh language album. She then introduced him to Kassin, the legendary Brazilian producer and multiinstrumentalist. The two hit it off immediately when they met in London in the Summer of 2018, and Kassin suggested that Ellis travel to Rio to work together on an album, along with some of Rio’s finest musicians. This they did, and Ellis took the resultant recordings back to Wales to add some further Welsh magic to them. Not to be missed! Age: 16+ or with an adult

cloakroom’. A showreel of contemporary photography by students from Coleg Llandrillo seeks to do the same, responding to themes arising from the production such as ‘power’, ‘injustice’, ‘rights’ and ‘ownership’. Forming part of the Northern Eye Photography Festival

9Bach £14 £12 students and under 18s The re-release of the remastered album “9Bach” (Real World Records) sees the band tour their critically acclaimed self- titled debut for the very first time. The album, which recasts traditional Welsh folk songs onto a spectral and haunting sound canvas will see them tour several venues across the UK , offering audiences a rare chance to see this stunning act live.
Formed by Martin Hoyland (Pusherman) and Lisa Jên (vocal collaborator with Gruff Rhys/Public Service Broadcasting), when Martin overheard Lisa singing in her kitchen!, the band’s first gig was at Greenman in 2005 with their first request for a CD being from Bonnie Prince Billy. Since then they have collaborated with artists all over the world, received rave reviews and played global stages.
“Cool exquisite vocals dominate the album” The Guardian
“Lisa Jên has a voice of mountain-brook purity” Metro
During the interval A new commission inspired by narratives within 9bach’s music will be premiered on Pontio’s White Wall. They have also collaborated with Pontio on Llechi as part of our opening season. Their songs take you to the North Wales landscape and are filled with emotion as the heart and soul of each story is revealed through compelling and exquisitely sung narrative. Etheral voices and dubby beats combine with harp, guitar harmonium and extremely smart arrangements. Pre Theatre Menu available in Cegin

Saturday 16 November 8pm Theatr Bryn Terfel Pontio & UMCB presents
Gig H a’r Band £12 until 31 October £15 1 November onwards Bangor and its environs was one of Edward H Dafis’ strongholds in the early 1970s and was an important part of the circuit of college gigs that the band played at regularly during that decade. There is a reference to Bangor students in one of the group’s earliest songs, ‘Cân y Stiwdants’ ; “Wyt ti wedi bod ym Mangor, mewn trwy’r ‘Foltie’ mas trwy’r ‘Glôb’?
Tonight through an invitation by UMCB and Pontio they’ll be performing in Theatr Bryn Terfel! ‘H’ a’r Band was formed in 2013 by Cleif ‘H’ Harpwood, main vocalist of the 1970s iconic Welsh band, Edward H. Dafis. At that time the band consisted of four original members of Edward H Dafis, Hefin Elis, Charles Britton, John Griffiths and Cleif himself. Sadly , John, the faithful bass
guitarist, died suddenly in 2018 and so only three of the original Edward H will appear on the Pontio stage. But H a’r Band has four other members, Wyn Pearson playing the guitar, Pwyll ap Siôn playing the keyboard and Elain Llwyd and Glesni Fflur providing vocals. Enjoy a night of the sounds of the 70s and the ‘Hen Ffordd Gymreig o fyw’. Standing gig 18+
