COVER FEATURE

inspiration in the art of decorating a space

COVER FEATURE

I: TELL US THE STORY BEHIND YOUR INSPIRATION.

Sine J.H. Kim: What inspires me is the desire to create a GOOD product. I always give 100% of my effort working on a project so I’m convinced that it’s my best work before I exhibit it. I want to create a design that can fulfill everyone’s satisfaction. Of course, it’s impossible but coming close to it is good enough. I want everyone to like my design and appreciate them. That’s what inspires me to create my designs today.

COVER FEATURE

I: THERE’S ALWAYS A FIGURE THAT PEOPLE LOOK UP TO. WHO INSPIRED YOU? Sine J.H. Kim: There are so many designers and architects I look up to. But for now, these are the people keeping me interested in design and architecture: Tadao Ando and Frank Loyd Wright. I’ve studied their biography and felt that I learned so much from them. Although I learned some basics in uni, but I learned even more by studying the sketches, plans and philosophies of these architects. I analyzed their works and tried to come up with my own style from there.

I: HOW DID YOU DISCOVER THESE ARCHITECTS? Sine J.H. Kim: Well, when I decided to study architecture, I put my mind and soul to it. I made researched about architecture and stumbled upon these architects’ designs that inspired me.

I: ART IS A BROAD FIELD. INITIALLY YOU’RE IN ARCHITECTURE, BUT NOW YOU’RE ALSO INVOLVE IN INTERIOR DESIGNING. SO, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE INTERIOR DESIGN? Sine J.H. Kim: I actually didn’t choose interior design. In my opinion, both architecture and interior design go hand-in-hand. In architecture, we create structures and designs to make something new while interior design is about decorating the space with striking elements – making the space come alive. While working in Malaysia, I started out with interior design. Slowly, people started to take notice.

COVER FEATURE

building your carrer I: SO, IN MALAYSIA, YOU ONLY FOCUS MORE ON INTERIOR DESIGN?

“No, I take on whatever projects I can get. I cover architecture as well.”

I: HAS ART ALWAYS BEEN YOUR INTEREST?

“Yes! Both my parents have played a big part in my career. My mom is actually a famous painter in Korea. She’s also a writer and does basically everything related to arts. I grew up watching her so, I guess she’s a big influence on my artistic side. My dad was an architect before he got involved in a development company and now, he is a politician. Both of them have been supportive and open-minded about my choice. For example, I was interested in music because of my mom so she got me a synthesizer for my birthday. That’s when she asked if I wanted to be a music composer and I ended up getting involved in music. I learned to express my emotions through music and now, through art.”

I: EVERY ARTIST HAS THEIR OWN IDENTITY. HOW DO YOU INSTILL YOUR ORIGINALITY IN YOURS?

“I actually never thought about it. I think for most artists, they want a signature identity in their works. But personally, whenever I design with this in mind, it destroys my creativity. So, I never think about my originality in my work. I go with the flow. Surprisingly, people recognize my designs. I guess it comes naturally.”

style of art I: WHAT’S YOUR STYLE OF ART?

“I like to use geometric shapes and linear lines. When you create things with a lot of lines in one space, you’ll find cross lines, curve lines and straight lines that meet at a point, creating an interesting shape or space that integrates together. I use this technique in my work and that makes me different from other designers or architects. It’s not intentional but it’s just how I see things while designing.”

I: HOW DID YOUR ART EVOLVE FROM THE START OF YOUR CAREER TILL TODAY?

“In terms of art, initially I only used shapes and lines. But now, I try to incorporate tones, colours and textures to create a different feel. I’ve always expressed emotions through my designs but now I’m more focused on designing for the mass. I want to fulfill everyone’s needs – every detail of it!”

I: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY?

“7 years.”

I: WHICH PART OF THE WORLD HAVE YOU EXPOSED YOUR ARTS TO?

“Hmmm. Well, Australia, United Kingdom, Malaysia, the States, and of course South Korea. But these countries are where I lived before while expanding my art.”

I: HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

“Frankly speaking, I was patient. There were may talented designers in the world who didn’t have the chance to expose their designs to the world. I met many talented architects who only managed to design houses, few managed to design big projects like skyscrapers and museums. So I am being patient now for an opportunity to expose my designs to the world.”

I: SO, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?

“When I first came to Malaysia, I struggled to find work. I had no connections and nobody knew me. Fortunately, I got in touch with someone who wanted me to design his house on an empty land in Klang. I presented a basic design but unfortunately, when I banked in the check, it bounced and I couldn’t contact him. So, they actually took my plans and fled. I tried to sue but my lawyer said it won’t help much so I dropped charges. I’m not familiar with Malaysian law. There was also once where I was dead broke and I couldn’t pay my rentals. I almost gave up on my career but luckily, I didn’t.”

I: HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR IMAGE IN THE INDUSTRY?

“As a designer, whether you’re an architect or a graphic designer, you need to look the part. Not necessarily splurging on designer wear but just to look presentable. I mean if you can’t even design yourself, how can you design something? So, I always try to keep track of latest trends to look stylish and maintain my image as a designer.”

I: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR NEW ARTISTS WHO WANT TO FOLLOW YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

“When there’s an opportunity for you to do something you love, just do it before it’s too late. Even if people discourage you. And also one must always weigh your options to make a right decision. Because the decisions you make define your future.”

THE GREAT PLASTIC TIDE/ YOU HEAR MERMAIDS CRY

THE GOOD LIFE

#PLASTIC CONTAMINATES GROUNDWATER/

Buried beneath all the landfills are plastic leachate. They're a plastic slum where the delinquents go to live. It is steeped with toxic chemicals that seep into the groundwater and flows into lakes and rivers into the water which we drink from. Think it doesn’t affect you? Think again.

POISONS ENTIRE FOOD CHAIN/

At the lowest point of the food chain, we have planktons. They're tiny, microscopic creatures that live and sustain many aquatic life. Sometimes, they eat microplastics and even absorb toxins. So when the beginning of the food chain is contaminated, the rest follows and eventually reaches us.

IS IMMORTAL/

Plastic has an estimated lifespan of, well, forever. They are a non-biodegradable material meaning it never breaks down over time. It has the anti-aging power of Madonna! The worst part of plastics? We all know this one: we often never reuse them, leaving them to become waste in plastic hell.

CONTRIBUTES TO ENVIRONMENTAL LANDFILL/

In 2013, about 299 million tons of plastic were produced - a 4% increase from 2012. Out of that, only 5% gets recycled. The rest? They end up populating landfills, incinerated or becoming litter. By 2025, the numbers are said to increase 20 times more. Wall-E for our future, maybe?

TEXT BY DAPHNIE LOONG

THE GOOD LIFE

[WHAT ARE THEY] PLASTIC INGREDIENTS

What makes plastic one of mankind’s favourite material to use, so much so that it has become our norm? Plastic is the epitome of perfection to a manufacturer’s eye: lightweight, flexible, versatile, and cheap. The ugly side? It is a petroleum based product that is nonbiodegradable and emits noxious gases if burnt. Zooming in, they are made of molecular chains called polymers - usually a carbon and hydrogen bond. In layman terms, they're a blend of natural gas, oil, coal, and minerals.

PLASTIC DESTROYS EARTH ARE A POLLUTANT MAGNET/

Toxic spills in water are often unheard of but not because it doesn't happen but because plastic manufacturers add additives such as flame retardants, BPAs and PVCs which strain their own toxins. These poison sticks to plastic debris like magnets and can eventually enter our bodies too.

ENDANGER HUMAN HEALTH/

The rise of cancer, birth defects, impaired immunity and other mysterious disorders all pose a strong link to our exposure to plastic chemicals. We are exposed to it daily causing them to find a cosy home in our blood and tissues. Not our best choice of dinner guest, amirite?

THREATENS WILDLIFE/

All those horrific photos of turtles deformed from 6-pack plastics, seagulls with a belly full of trash are all true. Plastic disrupt wildlife habitat and causes unnatural death by plastic through ingestion and entanglement. As for aquatic microorganisms, they are being overshadowed by plastic debris at a 36:1 ratio!

COSTS BILLIONS TO FIX/

For something we perceive as mundane and normal, it threaten us more than we’d like. And if you think it is easy to wipe the earth clean of plastics or some scientist can conjure a quick fix: no chance. It will cost the world a fortune to even try.
