Poppy and Fred’s trip to the Farmers Market. By Bryony Richardson I would like to say thank you to Sean - the modern salad grower for being the inspiration behind this story.

Every Sunday morning Poppy and
Fred go to the farmers market. It is their favourite thing to do.
No matter what the weather, rain or shine, Poppy and Fred would not miss it.
The market is always busy, full of stall holders shouting...
“£1 a bowl ! Lovely cherry tomatoes Eggs fresh today Never get fresher Fish of the day Red snapper, what a beauty!” It’s never boring in the market.
Poppy often loses Fred amongst
the crowds. Fred loves to smell EVERYTHING!!! This leads him to places Poppy can’t follow; under tables, through peoples legs, over shopping baskets ...
Poppy began her usual shop while Fred occupied himself sniffing around the whole market.
First, Poppy stopped to get some flowers from Margery the flower lady.
Then, she bought 12 sardines from Bert on the fish stall. Then, 12 of the ripest tomatoes from Nora. Then, one big slice of cheddar from Clara the cheese connoisseur.
Next she went to buy vegetables
from Sean the farmer.
Sean was looking confused. “What’s the matter ?” said Poppy. “Well Poppy...
Every week I come to market and
every week my carrots go missing. I spend all my time growing them, looking after them and picking them to bring them here and then, GONE ! They just disappear !” What a mystery, thought Poppy. What or who could be taking them ? “We must find the explanation!” said Poppy.
Poppy and Fred began to search
the whole market for clues. Poppy asked every stall holder if they had seen the carrots disappearing. Fred used his sniffing technique to search under every table, chair and basket for carrots... It was not long until Fred found one carrot, then another, then another...
Fred started to follow the trail
of carrots, Poppy followed Fred and Sean the farmer followed Poppy. The trail of carrots lead all the way down the lane, through farmer Sean’s field and back to the very plot where Sean had picked the carrots that morning.
There right in front of them was RABBIT !
Rabbit was busily planting the carrots back in to the ground. But why ? This is the strangest thing, thought Poppy.
Poppy asked Rabbit why she was
planting the carrots. Rabbit was very cross. “I keep finding my carrots where they are not supposed to be. They go when I am not watching! They won’t stay fresh out of the ground, I must put them all back. QUICK! Get out of my way, I have no time to lose !”
Rabbit believed that the carrots belonged to her and not to Sean the farmer and that she had to look after them. Poppy tried her very best to explain to Rabbit why the carrots were at the market. It was not easy when Rabbit was so cross.
Poppy explained she liked
carrots and Fred and Sean the farmer did too. Rabbit did not believe her, only rabbits like carrots! Sean the farmer had a plan. “All this talk about carrots is making me hungry, let’s all have some lunch.”
So together they cooked up a
feast with Poppy’s sardines from Bert the fishmonger, tomatoes from Nora the greengrocer and carrots from Sean the farmer. It was the most excellent meal and Rabbit agreed that they all liked carrots. Rabbit could see that sharing made everyone happy!
