WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

IN THE 20 YEARS SINCE IT ACQUIRED ITS FACILITY AT THE PORT OF TYNE, WORLD-LEADING RECYCLING GIANT EMR HAS BECOME A MAJOR REGIONAL SUCCESS STORY. How much thought do you give to what happens to the world’s millions of scrapped cars, consumer products and waste from industry, construction and demolition? Unless you’re involved in its disposal, possibly not a great deal, but at European Metal Recycling’s facility at the Port of Tyne, one man’s rubbish is another’s stock in trade.

Handling 300,000-400,000 tonnes of scrap metal every year from numerous sources including factories, demolition companies, the general public, tradesmen and other scrap metal merchants, the processed material is sold into the Mediterranean, North America and the Far East, contributing to EMR’s global operation which in 2016 turned over $3 billion.

Wildly fluctuating international market rates for scrap metal mean that the reliable availability of berths to meet market demand is as important to EMR’s global operation as the processing of material. Hence, the 13 metre depth deep-sea quay at the Port, which allows the company to move in excess of 40,000 tonnes on one vessel, is essential.

“We operate in a challenging market and we must be able to respond quickly to satisfy customer demands.

“This ensures longevity of supplier relationships” says Andrew Brady, EMR Chief Operating Officer.

As one of the largest recycling companies in the world with 170 sites processing more than 1 million tonnes of non-ferrous metal and 9 million tonnes of steel every year, in the UK EMR employs 1,600 people across 70+ sites, including strategically placed deep-sea and short-sea dock locations for export.

Over the last year, the company has invested more than £1 million in its Port of Tyne facility, where it bases some 30 transport, operations and commercial staff. It now plans to further develop the site in 2018 as it manages global challenges including volatility in international demand and discounted finished steel products from China.

“We have a very good working relationship with the Port,” adds Andrew. “We work together very closely, especially when we have a vessel due in for loading. EMR transfers the material from the main holding site to the quayside, ready to be loaded, it is then loaded onto the vessel by the port crane.”

Interestingly, as a company dedicated to the processing of waste, it is investing time and money towards its aim of becoming a zero-waste company. In addition, the worldleading technologies employed by EMR, which remains a family-owned concern, include one of the world’s largest mega-shredders - a 10,000 horsepower giant which can recycle a car every 15 seconds.

“The industry has changed a lot,” says Andrew. “Markets have shifted considerably, landfill taxes have increased dramatically and recycling rates are constantly rising. Since 2008, EMR has invested £350 million in new technologies and partnerships.

By adopting a zero-waste approach to recycling, we have managed to achieve world-leading recycling and recovery rates.”

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES JOHN CRIDLAND CBE, CHAIR OF TRANSPORT FOR THE NORTH, MAKES THE CASE FOR TRANSFORMATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS TO UK CONNECTIVITY. What is Transport for the North?

Transport for the North (TfN) is a partnership of public and private sector bodies in northern England.

We are working with the Government and national transport bodies to improve networks between economic centres to connect people to work and businesses to markets. TfN’s Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic Review states that by 2050 a transformed North could see a 4% increase in productivity, equating to an increase in Gross Value Added (GVA) of almost £100 billion, creating up to 850,000 new jobs.

What does TfN aim to achieve?

The 16 million citizens of the North of England are almost £5,000 per year less well off than the rest of the country. We want to close that gap. There are two reasons for the gap - school performance is lower in the North, and connectivity is poorer, which affects the ability of people to travel to higher quality jobs.

Do those higher quality jobs exist?

They do, and our Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic Review identifies four core capabilities where the North is highly competitive.

They are lower carbon energy, advanced manufacturing, digital, life sciences and health. To build upon these strengths we need to connect businesses to markets and people to jobs.

In doing this, we aim to enable people to do things and operate differently.

We don’t just say, ‘we must have more capacity on the railways because they are congested’; we do say that if people can commute daily from Bradford to Manchester, for example, people can reach jobs and entrepreneurs can get to new markets.

You were Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) 2011-2015. How does this inform your current role?

Throughout the five years I was Director General, we knew that to get the economy going it was really important to help entrepreneurs source materials and labour and get their goods to market. In an age of austerity, the Government can make a real difference in making this happen.

TfN has emphasised the need to improve east-west links. Why?

“Transport for the North puts more emphasis on east-west links than ever before. It’s vital that we connect economic corridors.”

Our issue is that people have to be able to get to them if they are to reach the rest of the world.

What are the major challenges in achieving TfN’s aims?

East-west geography is very challenging. It is mountainous in the middle, and crossing the Pennines means complex engineering and investment. Travelling from Newcastle to Manchester and Liverpool is difficult and the A69, A66, M62 all need re-engineering. For the northsouth corridor, we also have a lot to say about the importance of the A1 and A19 and economic links with Edinburgh and South West Scotland.

North-south and east-west links require equal focus.

As an example, energy businesses on Tyneside need to work with energy businesses in the North West, which is why the development of the A69 and A66 is so important. TfN puts more emphasis on east-west links than ever before. All roads and railways used to lead to London, and that’s important - but it’s not sufficient. What is achievable in the short term?

We can begin to change living It’s vital that we connect economic standards. It will take a generation corridors - i.e. the ports of the Tyne, Tees and Humber with the ports in the - 30 years - to fill the £5,000 gap.

And in a generation, what do you see?

By 2033, HS2 should reach north of Leeds. By then we want a new railway - Northern Powerhouse Rail - connecting Hull and Liverpool with a spur up to Newcastle. We need to bring this connectivity onto the HS2 network to create a seamless connection from HS2 to Northern Powerhouse Rail. This opens options for rail freight, which is so important to ports. We are working very hard to ensure that opportunities presented

by HS2 are not missed.

Are you optimistic?

The North has the chance to make these decisions on its own, but the money comes from the Treasury so we have to persuade the Chancellor.

WE HAVE THE POWER

THE PORT OF TYNE IS HOME TO A MAJOR ENERGY STORAGE FACILITY DEVELOPED AND OPERATED

BY THE WORLD’S LARGEST INDEPENDENT RENEWABLE ENERGY COMPANY, RES. Flick a switch and the lights come on. Don’t they? Barring fire and flood yes, generally, but keeping the world turning is a highly specialised business requiring the sort of state-of-the art technology now at the heart of a major 35 MW (megawatt) lithium-ion battery storage facility at the Port of Tyne.

Developed and operated by Renewable Energy Systems (RES) - one of the world’s leading independent renewable energy and energy storage developers when it is commissioned in early 2018 the Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) battery storage facility will play an essential part in the National Grid’s ongoing move to a more flexible low-carbon energy network.

RES is constructing and will manage the facility on behalf of Foresight Group - an independent infrastructure and private equity investment manager. Its acquisition of the site in 2017 made it the largest of the National Grid’s EFR battery storage projects in the UK to attract investment from an infrastructure investment manager.

“The mission of facilities like this,” says Matthew Hellewell, RES Senior Property Manager, “is to enable the grid to have greater flexibility. As we continue our move to a low-carbon economy with a greater proportion of our electricity coming from renewables, storage is a vital tool to help manage the electricity network in a cost-effective way.

“The energy storage facility at the Port of Tyne helps to achieve this by providing Enhanced Frequency Response to National Grid in less than a second.

“If the electricity demand on the network is greater than the current level of generation of electricity on the network, the frequency of the network (which needs to be at 50 hertz) will decrease.

In this event, the battery control system will sense this drop in frequency and commence exporting power to assist in balancing the supply and demand in the system.

“The reverse will happen if the current level of generation (supply) of electricity on the network is greater than the current electricity demand; the frequency will increase and the battery at the Port of Tyne will commence importing power to assist in balancing the system.”

The world’s largest independent renewable energy company, RES is active in a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar, transmission and energy storage.

To date it has developed or built more than 12 GW (gigawatts) of renewable energy projects and energy storage capacity worldwide and it has an asset management portfolio exceeding 2 GW.

Matthew Hellewell Senior Property Manager, RES Active in the global energy storage market since 2010, RES has partnered with utilities, investors and independent power producers to create storage solutions.

Its decision to develop a battery storage facility at the Port of Tyne was influenced by the site’s secure location and its proximity to South Shields’ primary substation.

“Battery storage like this is an increasingly important part of the energy network as demand grows.

Being able to respond in sub-second timescales makes storage a vital means of keeping the lights on,” says Matthew Hellewell.

In addition to its Port of Tyne operation, RES currently has more than 1 GW projects consented, under construction or in advanced planning stages throughout the UK. Rachel Ruffle, RES MD, says: “Energy storage plays a crucial role in delivering a flexible electricity network to support the UK’s economic growth.

“As a leader in energy storage, RES prides itself on delivering projects that meet the needs of our clients and society. We are proud to be working with Foresight as it expands its investments into energy storage.”

“This pioneering project sets an exciting precedent for the integration of battery storage into the UK energy system. Foresight is proud to be at the forefront of investment in the significant transition now underway in our energy system, as we move towards an increasingly secure low-carbon electricity supply.”

Shipping containers have transformed the way manufacturers and retailers get their goods to market. Carrying toys, household goods, car parts, tea for your morning cuppa - you name it, they transport it, in and out of the Port of Tyne.

As one of the UK’s major feeder ports, the Port is a major northern gateway for imports and exports.

Week in, week out, it’s part of a global logistical machine which connects port to port, container contents to end user.

Nissan and Komatsu rely upon the Port for parts, tea producers Tetley, Ringtons and Keith Spicer depend upon it for raw tea, Argos welcomes household goods, and retail giant JML counts the Port of Tyne and Rotterdam-based BG Freight Line as a vital part of its global supply chain.

TEU* CAPACITY ON MV BG IRELAND

BG Freight Line is a critical link in a huge transport chain of internationally shipped containers.

Its MV BG Ireland operates a deep-sea feeder service at the Port of Tyne, connecting South Shields with Felixstowe and Rotterdam on a fixed schedule providing trade and industry with reliable connections.

This network reduces unnecessary road and rail miles and makes for a greener, more environmentally sustainable alternative.

In 2016, the Port of Tyne handled 53,000 TEUs* importing a multitude of goods and exporting multiple others including recycled paper and plastics. John Hoenderop, BG Freight Line Operations Manager Rotterdam, says: “You name it, we move it - car parts, tea, tyres, toys, household items and recycled materials. Our feeder service is highly successful, environmentally friendly and cost effective.”

BG Freight Line began operating at the Port of Tyne in 2013 and since then the relationship has been extremely positive. “The relationship is perfect - it’s very important to us,” adds John. BG Freight Line’s greatest daily challenge lies in keeping ships moving - particularly at Rotterdam, which is one of the world’s busiest container ports. This means that the service at the Port of Tyne is a vital and highly efficient cog in this ever-revolving wheel.

“We are involved not just with the containers, but with warehousing and the onward distribution of goods.

For many of our customers, the delivery of goods can be time critical.

BY ROAD AND SEA AT ITS TYNE TERMINAL. As part of Inter Terminals, one of the largest independent bulk liquid storage providers in Northern Europe, Tyne Terminal is capable of receiving ship sizes up to 30,000 tonnes with access to two jetties on the River Tyne, one of the UK’s major deep sea ports. Together with good sea connections to continental Europe, the terminal has excellent road links to the North of England and Scotland.

Tyne Terminal was originally privately owned and comprised terminals on both the north and south banks of the river. Following its acquisition by Inter Terminals Limited (formerly Simon Storage) the terminal was consolidated at North Shields and has since been expanded by the construction of new tankage.

Today, the terminal has 57,000m­3 of storage in 62 tanks. Capacities range from 56m­3 to 5,000m­3 and a broad range of facilities are available to suit different contract requirements.

These include mild steel, stainless steel and lined tankage, together with heated and nitrogen blanketed tanks. Terminal configuration can be readily modified to meet demand and Inter Terminals’ in-house engineering team has the expertise to design bespoke solutions.

Heading Tyne Terminal’s experienced team is Alastair Bulmer, who has held the position of Terminal Manager since 2009. He moved to the Tyne from Inter Terminals’ Seal Sands facility and 2017 marks his 26th year with the business.

“I was born in Middlesbrough so my roots are firmly planted in the North East,” he says. “As Terminal Manager I have responsibility for every aspect of the terminal’s activities.”

Alastair and his dedicated team are committed to maintaining the safe and efficient operation of this COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations) Upper Tier facility.

Tyne Terminal offers a diverse portfolio of facilities including dedicated stainless steel tanks and pipelines to serve a broad range of markets from oil and chemical manufacturing and distribution, to potable alcohols and the waste sector, providing specialist services to some of the world’s leading companies.

Tyne Terminal also provides various value-added operations including bulk breaking operations such as semi-automatic drumming and IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) filling.

In addition, it provides blending, mixing and sampling of stored products and road tanker loading gantries at the terminal are specially designed to accommodate different types and heights of modern liquid cargo containers from the UK and continental Europe.

Indicator meters are installed on all gantries to increase accuracy and safety for drivers during tanker loading.

Additionally, Tyne Terminal is an HMRC ‘bonded warehouse’ and equipped with extensive security systems.

Over the years Tyne Terminal has taken a proactive approach to the ever-changing needs of the market to ensure it can offer the services its customers need. Alastair says: “Through on-going investment in skills, infrastructure and facilities we will continue to offer our customers costeffective solutions to their specific storage and handling requirements.”

SUPPORT FOR SEAFARERS A new welfare fund has been launched to help seafarers in need from the 100,000-plus crew who visit the Port of Tyne each year.

Shipping lines can pay a voluntary levy into the Port Welfare Fund each time one of their vessels comes into the port. The Port of Tyne contributes 50p for every £1 collected through the fund, for which the Port received the International Port Welfare CSR award at London International Shipping Week in September.

The optional tariff is based on a ship’s gross tonnage and ranges from £20 to £30 per vessel, payable on the first 10 visits to the port each calendar year. HISTORIC LIFEBOAT RETURNS The historic Tyneside lifeboat Bedford is back home in South Shields after business leaders backed a bid to safeguard its return.

Businesses and organisations including the Port of Tyne, BT South Tyneside, Colman’s, Barbour, JML, Dicksons, South Tyneside Council, Ward Hadaway, and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums joined forces to cover the cost of buying Bedford and transporting it to Tyneside.

The 131-year-old boat was in service on the Tyne for 50 years, launching 55 times and saving 50 lives. She left South Shields in 1968 to go to Exeter Maritime Museum under the care of the International Sailing Craft Association, later moving to Lowestoft and then to Eyemouth Maritime centre, which closed earlier this year when its collection was put up for auction.

The North East Maritime Trust is to lead a project to restore Bedford, which is in temporary storage at the Port of Tyne.

PORT APPOINTS CHAIR The Port of Tyne has appointed business development specialist Lucy Armstrong as its new Chair.

Lucy, who is Chief Executive of The Alchemists - a North East-based business consultancy which works with high-growth mid-corporate businesses to accelerate their development - brings a wealth of boardroom experience to her new role with the Port.

PETCOKE FOR THE PORT

She is Chair of the Enterprise Research Centre Advisory Board, was Chair of the CBI’s national Small Business Forum 2010-2013, and Acting Chair of Northumbria University until 2012. “I’m delighted to be joining the board at this time of challenge and opportunity,” Lucy said. “It’s a new and exciting role for me and I look forward to playing my part and helping to support the Port’s future plans.”

Oxbow, an international leader in the supply of energy products, is now bringing petroleum coke through the Port of Tyne, the first 50,000 tonnes having arrived in July 2017.

Petroleum coke (petcoke) is a by-product of the oil refining process with a variety of uses in the manufacture of steel, aluminium, cement and smokeless fuels.

Alasdair Kerr, Port of Tyne Commercial Director Port Services, said: “The Port of Tyne has diversified its bulk cargo operations to handle a wide range of commodities for customers from energy producers to recycling companies. This is the start of regular shipments for Oxbow and we are delighted that we have been able to work with Oxbow to add value to its business.”

CRUISE GEM SAILS IN

WINNING PARTNERSHIP

The Norwegian Jade made its inaugural call at the Port of Tyne in September, marking the first call of Norwegian Cruise Line and bringing with her 2,400 passengers and more than 1,000 crew.

Victor Products, a subsidiary of Federal Signal Corporation, has relocated its North East manufacturing facility to the Port of Tyne at Tyne Dock, South Shields, joining more than 100 commercial tenants at Port sites north and south of the River Tyne.

Passengers from 45 nations explored the region’s attractions during the visit – one of 52 cruise calls in 2017.

Steven Harrison, Port of Tyne Chief Operating Officer, said: “The combined effect of the Port of Tyne cruise and ferry business adds some £51 million to the regional economy supporting 1,700 tourism-related jobs.

The move will enable the business to expand, increase efficiency, and get goods to market more quickly.
