PROJECT CARGO We can… and we do. Giant pieces of machinery, rolling stock, modular units, jack up barges, heavy equipment, entire fabricated buildings - we do it all. The Port of Tyne has many years’ experience handling heavy lift and project cargo.

Our deep water berths, RoRo ramps, covered and open storage, a rail terminal and a wide range of gantry and slewing cranes, plus a good dose of our flexible ‘can do’ attitude, mean we’re well equipped to take care of your project cargo and heavy lift requirements. Port of Tyne works in close partnership with the local cluster of high-class fabricators on the River Tyne, including GE Baker Hughes, Smulders, and A&P.

Port of Tyne provides a lock-free safe haven, open 365 days a year, with dedicated open storage, warehousing and fabrication areas in close proximity to the quayside. Our expert stevedores and operational staff are experienced in handling a wide variety of cargo from one-off projects to multiple shipments. “We have worked closely with the Port of Tyne on many successful project cargoes over the years, most notably Hitachi Trains for the East & West coast of the UK, built and shipped from Japan direct to Port of Tyne and discharged on 80 foot Mafi’s across the Port of Tyne’s berths. In co-operation with the Ports professional operational teams, these trains were safely handed over to Hitachi Trains Europe, Newton Aycliffe.” Graeme Wardhaugh, General Manager, N.S.A. U.K. LTD
