April 2018 How I worked on Australia Day but did not take paid advertising to announce. I also worked part of the Saturday and Sunday. In protest? No - I have my own view on the plethora of public holidays and state rights / but I choose to work in a business that seems to be active 24/7. Much like the people reading this page. My privileged time is my annual leave. We were going to run the cover of this new title offering under the banner of "high fives", for a handful of books where we have sold 5000 copies in the last 12 months - not strong enough a message for the cover, but still worthwhile noting them. Without these publicly demanded backlist titles we would struggle, as committing to the constant build for new titles is in fact very expensive and with the go to backlist we all then are satisfied as the risk is diminished. So those top titles are (in no particular order) Food as Medicine $55.00, The Grade Cricketer (across its print and digital forms), Hey Warrior (PB + HB), Weed Foragers Handbook $21.95 and Secret Girls' Business Books (Secret Girls and Secret Boys). Naked for Satan - I had the opportunity to sit with David Tenenbaum (Publisher Melbourne Books) to have every page of the uncorrected proofs shown to me. Highly compelling session as I left believing we have the grit to make this a global book saleable in Greenwich Village, or Fremantle, or Oslo. I am very hopeful that it will track toward a shortlisting for the Gourmand Awards list for next year. And the reminder that these sort of books take a very heavy investment by the publisher for an industry to enjoy. This week we publicly announced our foray into "International" with www.dennisjonesinternational.com.au. We have launched based on a couple of premises. First, in our own business we do not wish to deviate from being very Australian in the content we house physically as well as support onto the formats of eBook and Print on Demand. We will never run out of demand for the services we offer to bring books to market. I also think that with the growth of indie publishing globally the old method of shipping bulk stock to a local shed to stagnate or sell is flawed as well. So many books and models change. You only need to think of how Rebel Girls 2 has come to market. It also presents somewhat of the old paradigm shift as booksellers will need to be more reflective of firm sale buying, mark ups and margin as well as the nuances of taxation through customs charges, GST, etc.
Words from the Wise Last week we celebrated selling our 150,000th eBook. Very exciting for a business that does work for the local independent publishers and authors. Our bestselling eBooks are currently The Missing Beaumont Children, Faerie Apocalypse and the three Pufferfish titles published by Fullers from Hobart, and the biggest selling author for last month was Arthur Upfield with the Bony series. And then there are the 30 or 40 work in progress titles of books being converted back to files to enable republishing as new editions across any of the formats of offset, eBook, Print on Demand. We probably have an output of over 50 - 70 books per year where it is a virtual publishing task undertaken. The business. Our January was marginally up in sales (5%) against last year, however it was the domination of many books rather than being led by any sort of best seller. A five week month however for wages and costs which will take the pleasure out of a sales growth. Again the continued growth of demand via online suppliers is both beneficial as well as a concern as it hides a soft book trade performance with our books. The shift to StarTrack for the majority of deliveries seems to have gone without a hitch to date. We have switched to get the books to you as quickly as we can - if it results in greater sell through and greater competitiveness with what the ugly consumer demands then we will have succeeded. Time will tell. The business. We still battle the landlords, the crumby Body Corporate, the on costs of utility supply for the premises and a desire to put the business back under one roof. Good Reading and Good customer relations. Best wishes DJ PS Can't sit on the fence on the 26th of January. Of course it should be renamed and shifted to coincide without becoming a Republic and the true recognition that we all came from faraway lands regardless of your heritage. One Nation, One People, united by the challenges of cohabitation of One Earth; where most of the government acts we live under were crafted in a time long gone. Time for change. DJ

AVAILABLE NOW In his second book Actually, It IS All About Me (Reboot Your Thinking was published in 2016), Nick Bowditch discusses the importance of putting yourself first in both mind and body. Nick talks openly and honestly about his mental health issues and how they affect where he puts himself on the ladder of needs (usually near or at the bottom when he is struggling and closer to the top when he is going well). "When I am low, I can quickly spiral into a self‐pity cycle that usually ends up in me lashing out, or acting out, in order to make myself feel better or make someone else feel worse. Just as easily, though, when I am low I can slip into a desire to act submissively and relegate myself down the rungs of importance in my own thinking. I can assure myself that even if I am no good, worthless or unlovable at the moment (all mostly lies that I tell myself when my mental health isn't as good as it could be), I can still make sure everyone else is flying. I can devote my time to making sure everyone else is getting everything they need, while parking my own needs and wants almost entirely. "But when I am going well, and my mental health is closer to the best it can be, I can see that I do deserve some attention and love and respect ‐ and not the least some self‐love. I can see that I am worthy, lovable and important. And I can start to place my needs back up near the forefront of my thinking, instead of submitting and concentrating on everyone else's." Actually, It IS All About Me looks at how to completely change our thinking so that our own needs are the most Author Information Nick is the only person in the Asia–Pacific region to have worked at both Facebook and Twitter, and the only person in the world to have worked in marketing at both brands. He is a successful (and unsuccessful) entrepreneur, TEDx speaker and thought‐leader in social media. He also works extensively in the start‐up ecosystem in Australia and internationally as both an advisor and investor, and he is a sought‐after keynote speaker. He travels nationally and internationally speaking at conferences and inspiring others to create and build businesses that use authentic storytelling, show empathy and a focus on social contribution, and have kindness at their core. He is also the father of four beautiful children and lives near Sydney, Australia. Reboot Your Thinking 28 Days to Think Different, Be Better Author

Being outside adds to everyone's quality of life but too often this simple joy of living is beyond the reach of older people and people with dementia. It's time to rethink the buildings we use for providing care, and even our own homes, to ensure there is a readily accessible 'room outside'. The benefits are undeniable‐improved health, greater independence and often emotional and spiritual comfort. The room outside is easy to read, informative and well‐researched making it the perfect resource for those seeking to build, design or manage better outdoor spaces, or those wanting to access and advocate for them. Aged care homes and hospitals have many rooms, but do they have a 'room outside?' They should and they can‐and everything needed to make this happen can be found in these pages. Landscape architect Annie Pollock has written this timely book, having devoted more than 40 years of her life to designing dementia‐inclusive outdoor living. She is joined by Associate Professor Colm Cunningham who contributes his extensive expertise on understanding dementia, ageing and evidence‐based care approaches.

Benji's autobiography of childhood neglect and bullying is told simply with compassion and poignancy. At a time when most school leavers are embarking on a future of freedom and excitement, the author chose to protect the only family he felt he had and became the sole guardian of his younger brother. With no home and no support from his socially inept father and his drug addict sister, he relates the years of emotional deprivation and abandoned dreams with courage and honesty. A trip to the Philippines to meet his mother's family eventually assists him in laying his personal demons to rest. Tough Ain't Enough will inspire all. Benji's story assures us that it is possible to overcome all sorts of problems, the importance of working through your issues and admitting human frailty. No one is tough enough.
Author Information Benji is the second child of Swedish and Filipino migrants. His dad was a miner and a social misfit; he was fired from every single job he ever had. His mum was a chef and became a single mother when Benji was still very young. Benji spent a lot of his childhood and adolescence moving around the country and watching his family fall apart around him. Training with the navy and tracking down his long lost family in the Philippines contributed to helping him understand who he is, giving him a sense of belonging. This is his first novel.

AVAILABLE NOW Woke is the first book in the Shibboleth trilogy. A story based on the account of one man's search for Truth during an extraordinary time in history. Just before dawn, on the first day of summer 1948, the body of an unidentified man is found slumped against a seawall on quiet Somerton beach near Adelaide. he has been poisoned, and there is speculation that he was a Soviet agent sent to spy on a top‐secret site being set up at Woomera in the remote South Australian desert. In a callous act that abruptly ends more than 50,000 years of relative isolation, the Aboriginal custodians of the Western Desert are forcibly removed from their homelands to enable Western civilisation to develop weapons of mass destruction. Will Oakley's search for truth would be shaped by the conjuncture of these vastly different worlds. Exiled by politics and conflict, he would wander the planet, before waking to a startling revelation ‐ a dangerous secret within sight at the start of his journey. Author Information John Ogden is the creator and sole director of Cyclops Press, an independent publishing house specializing in small edition art books that explore social issues in order to create awareness and discussion. Cyclops Press commenced business in 1999 with Australienation, a look at reconciliation in Australia through Ogden’s black and white photographs. In 2009, Ogden published Portraits from a Land Without People - the culmination of many years of research to create what is now regarded as the most comprehensive survey of the pictorial history of Aboriginal Australia yet produced. Phillip Adams described Portraits from a Land Without People as “a magnificent book as important a book as anything that’s been published in Australia for years.” Saltwater People of the Broken Bays - A history of Sydney's Northern Beaches, and the companion book Saltwater People of the Fatal Shore, looking at the history of Sydney’s coast from South Head to Royal National Park, were awarded the 2013 biennial Frank Broeze Maritime History prize by the Australian National Maritime Museum. Slightly Dangerous is a personal journal on the photography of John Ogden, published to accompany a retrospective exhibition held in 2012. This book was the inspiration for The Shibboleth Trilogy. The first volume, titled Woke, will be released in early February 2018. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

A Sense of Place Publishing

The ordinary and the extraordinary mix in this excruciatingly intimate, and at times triumphant and funny book which tells a profoundly moving story, custom built for our times. Anne M Reid had the perfect life with her perfect partner. She and Paul had been together for 12 years, married with three beautiful children, when one night, without warning, Paul admits to a life-long feeling of disconnection with his body, only recently understanding why: as a young child, he had wanted to be a girl. The book explores the anguish Anne feels as Paul begins transitioning to Paula, and all the confusion, bewilderment and social stigma surrounding a gender transition. Paula not only crossed the gender divide, but now had different likes and dislikes, and a different take on the world. The husband Anne knew disappeared from the world. How does she cope? How does she manage what is now a same sex relationship? How do the children adapt to two mothers? At times this is an incredibly emotional book. Anne lets fly with feelings of anger, betrayal, sadness, despair and loneliness. As Paula expressed disdain for any photographs or reminders of her earlier times as a male, Anne begins to wonder if her marriage had been some elaborate lie. Even happy times in the past are now tinged with sadness. Yet Anne also manages compassion and understanding. Despite all the fallout, Anne and Paula remain together. And there’s humour, for example, when the kids are deciding what to call the new ‘Paula’. This book is written from the unique perspective of a partner of a transitioning person. It’s a matter-of-fact, day-to-day account of what really goes on in a transitioning household. And it’s told by an author who is comfortable with describing her deepest emotions, fears and anxiety. You befriend the author at an intimate, emotional level. Paula has penned some chapters to explain her desperate need to transition, and the process that took place from her perspective. For Anne, writing She Said, She Said was a cathartic exercise. It helped her keep sane in the face of massive change she never anticipated. The book includes a section on the phenomenon of gender dysphoria and transitioning which Anne researched to enhance her own understanding. She Said, She Said offers unique insights not only to those who find themselves wearing Anne’s shoes, but to anyone curious about gender dysphoria and its impact on a family. Cheese making is a wonderful adventure and very rewarding. Much like people who wish to make their own bread, grow their own vegetables or make their own wines and beers, many cheese makers know that you cannot replace the quality of handmade cheeses with the mass produced supermarket cheeses available today. Plus, you can make various boutique cheeses at home which aren't readily available at the store. Additionally, the importance of eating foods without chemical additives, artificial colourings and preservatives is growing, as the awareness of the negative effects of these non‐food additives increases. As with other foods, when you make your own cheeses you control the ingredients and can guarantee that you are eating pure, whole foods and not some man made synthetic product that you really should not to be putting into your body in the first place. While there is a specific science to cheese making, it is also an art form and a craft. The more cheese you make, the better you will get at it. Once you have mastered the basics, you can begin to experiment and create your own specialty cheeses to suit your personal tastes. Hundreds of different cheeses have been developed across the world over centuries by artisans who have added their own personal magic to the craft. These cheese makers have contributed to the creation of an incredibly rich culture of cheese making, benefiting both the cheese maker and the cheese consumer. You too can create your own cheeses in your kitchen with minimal equipment for everyday consumption and special occasions.

The fourth in Dark Passage's reissue series of crime mysteries by June Wright, The Devil's Caress (originally published in 1952) is an atmospheric psychological thriller set on the wild southern coast of the Mornington Peninsula, outside Melbourne. Young medico Marsh Mowbray is invited to spend the weekend at the country home of her revered mentor, Dr. Kate Waring. But as storms rage outside, the house on the cliff's edge seethes with hatred and tension, and two suspicious deaths quickly follow. "Doubt is the Devil's caress", one of the characters tells Marsh, as her resolute efforts to get to the bottom of the killings force her to question everyone's motives, even those of Dr. Kate. This is a classic country house mystery with shades of Agatha Christie, but with the psychological edge of Daphne du Maurier.

A Rediscovered Queen of Australian Crime Melbourne‐born June Wright made quite a splash with the publication of her debut novel, Murder in the Telephone Exchange, in 1948. It was the bestselling mystery in Australia that year, sales outstripping even those of the reigning queen of crime, Agatha Christie. Wright went on to publish five more top‐quality mysteries over the next two decades ‐ including three featuring the irrpressible nun detective, Mother Paul ‐ while at the same time raising six children. When she died last year at the age of 92, June Wright's books were largely forgotten, despite the praise she received at the time and the championing of her work in such recent surveys of the field as Stephen Knight's Continent of Mystery. All that's about to change; Dark Passage is proud to announce the imminent republication of all June Wright's novels, beginning in December 2013 with Murder in the Telephone Exchange, followed by a previously unpublished mystery, Duck Season Death, in April 2014. These two books include extended introductions by Derham Groves. The other five novels will follow at intervals over the the next two years. MURDER IN THE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE June Wright's debut stars feisty young telephonist Maggie Byrnes. When one of her more unpopular colleagues at

Maggie Byrnes is married now, with a young son, and living in a quiet Melbourne suburb. But violent death dogs her footsteps even in apparently tranquil Middleburn. It's perhaps not such a surprise when a widely disliked local bigwig (who also happens to be Maggie's landlord) is shot, but Maggie suspects that someone is also trying to poison the infant who is his heir, and turns sleuth once more to uncover the culprits. This is June Wright's second novel, which she originally planned to call Who Would Murder a Baby? Her publishers drew the line at that, but under any title it's a worthy sequel to Murder in the Telephone Exchange. Includes a new introduction by Lucy Sussex plus her fascinating 1996 interview with June Wright.
June Wright wrote this lost gem in the mid‐1950s, but consigned it to her bottom drawer after her publisher foolishly rejected it. Perhaps it was a little ahead of its time? Because while it's a tour de force of the classic 'country house' murder mystery, it's also a delightful romp, poking fun at the conventions of the genre. When someone takes advantage of a duck hunt to murder publisher Athol Sefton at a remote hunting inn, it soon turns out that virtually everyone, guests and staff alike, had a good reason for shooting him. Sefton's nephew Charles thinks he can solve the crime by applying the "rules of the game" he's absorbed from his years as a reviewer of detective fiction ‐ except the killer evidently isn't playing by those rules. Duck Season Death is a both a fiendishly clever whodunit and a marvellous entertainment.

Frank Cousins is a knock‐about sort of a bloke. He's also the owner and sole employee of the Tasmanian Private Investigation Agency and, as his dear old mother said, 'occasionally his own worst enemy'. That was until Frank meets Joe Shadii, aka 'The Pharaoh'. Frank is hired by a London based solicitor to find the twin sister of his client in Hobart. It starts out as an easy‐peasy, money for jam case that turns nasty. Then an ex‐girlfriend, the lost love of his life, calls upon him to assist her brother who looks like going down for the brutal murder of his pregnant partner. And of course, Frank takes on the case. But, as with most of Frank's life, all is not what it first appears. Smuggled heroin, a handful of murders and coming to face with The Pharaoh was not what Frank had anticipated in trying to win back his lost love. It's all just as his dear old mother used to tell him, 'sometimes, life's just like that.' The Big Rort is the second in the Tasmanian Private Investigation Agency series, the first, The Long Con being published in 2017. Artist turned crime writer, Barry Weston was born a Capricorn in Brisbane, Queensland. He now lives with his wife and two chocolate Labradors on a few acres on a small island south of Hobart, Tasmania overlooking the Great Southern Ocean. Barry is a graduate of the University of Tasmania with a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts. His forty-odd-year career within the visual arts consists of thirtyeight solo/group exhibitions, regionally, nationally and internationally. He has taught visual arts at tertiary level at a few Australian universities, and was Artist-in-Residence at a few others. After resigning his position as Head of Department of the School of Arts, La Trobe University, Bendigo in 1999 and relocating to an island life-style. He but now focuses primarily on writing. The Long Con was his debut novel, and first in the Tasmanian Private Investigation Agency series. You can visit Barry at his own website, www. Barryweston.net/about. Frank Cousins is a knockabout bloke; an ex‐Queensland cop turned private eye who ‐ it has to be said ‐ is his own worst enemy. Owner and sole employee of the Tasmanian Private Investigation Agency in Hobart, Frank takes on three simple cases and soon find himself up to his neck in bad guys, bad situations and, as usual, bad behaviour. Money‐for‐jam, these three cases: find a missing woman, get the dirt on a philandering state politician, and provide personal protection for a wealthy, elderly matriarch ‐ figurehead of Tasmanian environmental group. What could possibly go wrong? Well, as Frank's dear old departed Mum always said: 'nothing in life is what it first appears to be'.

AVAILABLE NOW This new collection extends themes taken up in The Wind‐up Birdman of Moorabool Street (2012). Environmental degradation and theme park notions of the natural endure. Accordingly, these poems reflect with tenderness, anger and irony on the ways humans chronicle, construct and war upon their natural environments. 'Rendition' puns on the idea of a song lyric, translation, surrender and also torture. In the anti‐pastoral, anti‐war poems offered here, groups of human beings and individuals are also shown as either tragically marginalized, lost or held too close. Cautionary ecocritical threnodies splice with personal elegies and historical cultural reflections to suggest a world awash with maladies of different kinds, as if to say that human beings must recalibrate love, death, survival and history as matters of urgency. Author Information A. Frances Johnson is a writer and painter from the Bellarine in Victoria. She teaches creative writing at the University of Melbourne where she completed a PhD thesis on portrayals of Indigenous voices in post-colonial Australian historical novels. Her fiction and non-fiction have been published in various literary magazines, and her paintings shown in Indonesia and Australia. She has been the recipient of Asialink and Arthur Boyd Bundanon residencies in painting, and an Australia Council Literature Board grant for Don’t Run: A Brief History of Nylon. Her novel Eugene’s Falls (Arcadia 2007) retraced the ‘wilderness’ journeys of colonial painter Eugene von Guerard. A poetry chapbook The Pallbearer’s Garden was published by Whitmore Press in 2008, and her first collection, The Wind-up Birdman of Moorabool St (Puncher & Wattmann 2012) received the 2012 Wesley Michel Wright Prize.

History with a mystery. The Great War is raging. Mysterious circumstances cast an aging George Washington into a strained dinner with Edmund Barton, Australia's canny and pugnacious first prime minister. The Three Brothers presents an original and witty behind‐the‐scenes peek into the rough and tumble world of nation building as told by the first captains of the American and Australian Ships of State. Barrister, author and historian Stephen Marantelli weaves a meticulously researched history of the troubled and similar foundations of the American Republic and Australian Commonwealth into a riveting narrative that reads like a gripping novel filled with fly‐on‐the‐wall vignettes about America and Australia's scrappy, freedom‐hungry founding fathers. A must read for serious political scholars, and a fun romp for curious patriots in both lands.

Follow the footsteps from my growing up country Wiluna, WA to Sydney, NSW... At sixteen years of age life for me was looking good as it came towards the end of the Christmas Holidays. I believed I would not have to travel over 800 kilometres by slow train from Wiluna to Perth to attend school at Aquinas College, where I would again be a boarder, as I had been for several years. However I was given one hell of a shock when my father announced at dinner that I would be leaving for Perth the following Sunday to go to Perth University and study for several years to follow the family tradition to become a mining engineer. That night there was no time for sleeping ‐ when all was quiet after midnight I packed a few clothes, rifle and ammunition, then quietly wheeled my bike out through the front gate and rode away...

Shy looked back over his shoulder. He'd expected to see Missy following him but instead, in the distance, he could see the empty white branch shining in the moonlight. Missy was nowhere to be seen... Julie felt she had found an issue where she could make a contribution that would have an effect on the future of the planet and had thrown herself whole heartedly into saving the Leadbeaters Possums from the threat of logging on Murphy's Spur. After trapping a possum, called Missy, Julie becomes disillusioned with the intentions of the protest group and, releasing her, leaves. Meanwhile, as daylight was fading, the colony of Leadbeater Possums on Murphy's Spur had set out to forage in the territory below, returning early, disgruntled and complaining of the shortage of sustenance that was to be found nearby. They had to move. Their only option was to the adjoining dangerous park. Following the logging, while living a precarious and at times tragic life in the park, the colony waited for the day when, with regrowth established, they would return to Murphy's Spur. However, a further calamity awaited them before a return to Murphy's Spur would be realised.
Author Information Robyn Locket grew up on a dairy farm in the Baw Baw Region of Victoria, where her father worked on sawmills in the surrounding bush. When in the nineties, the Leadbeaters Possums were used in a campaign against logging in the Central Highlands, she decided to find out more about these fascinating little creatures. Over the years a story evolved and, with the assistance of her husband, she took numerous photos that resulted in the illustrations in this book. Having grown up in the same area and working in the bush since he was fifteen he knew the bush like the back of his hand. Recently, a new campaign to cease logging has begun, again using the Leadbeaters Possums. It is hoped that by reading this book you will get a better understanding of our Leadbeaters Possums and how they live, as well as the actual effect of logging on their livelihood. 1970, OUTBACK NEW SOUTH WALES... On a lonely, gravel road, Traffic Policeman James Cook is found dead. Along with his motorcycle, Cook is horrifically mutilated and crushed, then left to the elements beside the road. Despite twelve months of intensive investigations, the brutal murder remains unsolved. Undercover Detective Al Carmody is sent in to re‐investigate, after enlisting the help of his friend, road train operator and former policeman, Ian. In true Australian style the two comrades spend as much time and effort teasing and abusing each other as they do probing the baffling crime. Meanwhile Carmody's colleagues in Sydney stumble across a link between one of his suspects and the subject of a high powered, Interpol led, task force. Reluctantly, the two forces combine, after Interpol reveal their target could trigger World War 3. A fortune in diamonds is missing from an African country. A sheep station owner may be the surprising culprit. When the violent climax is reached, several persons are exposed as something other than their appearance. Even the late Constable Cook has has a secret to reveal. Author Information Terry Richardson was born in Sydney in June 1955. He spent his early childhood in the New South Wales outback, including the tiny towns of Hungerford and Ford’s Bridge. His formative years were spent in Brewarrina, before leaving school at the end of 1970. After a brief career with the then Post Master General’s Department, Terry followed the example of numerous country boys before him, and boarded the slow ‘mixed’ train from Brewarrina to start a new life in Sydney. His total possessions amounted to one small suitcase, a sleeping bag and his prized electric guitar. In the city he tried several occupations, including training as a motor mechanic, a short railway career, truck driver and even a two-year stint in policing as a Constable, before joining NSW Fire/Rescue in 1982. He retired as a Fire/Rescue Officer in 2011. Both at school and work Terry enjoyed writing, using his vivid imagination and wide-ranging life experiences as backgrounds for the plots. The game of Rugby League is usually featured in his novels, as Terry and his family are avid fans. Country railways are another favourite subject which usually rate a mention in any Terry Richardson novel. Terry met Linda soon after arriving in Sydney in 1971. They were married in 1975 and have three adult children and eleven grandchildren. They now reside in the Riverina district of New South Wales. Trochus is a story of one man's dream to make an equitable life for himself and his family. After being forced out of his previous livelihood, Warren Hill recovers a wrecked vessel considered to be near‐unsalvageable, intending to transform it into a vessel tailor‐made for collecting trochus shells off the Queensland coast. The salvage and rebuild of the vessel is only the start. From the time the boat was launched they were fraught with obstacles thrown from numerous directions, making it near impossible to get the boat to sea. A simple business venture becomes a lightning rod for unwanted attention from enemies unknown. And things only get worse after the vessel makes its maiden voyage as the Lara Star. The story of the Lara Star is one of great dreams and determination, but also one of greed and corruption. Banks, the local police force and politicians could be either friend or foe. It's a story of sabotage, extortion and attempted murder ‐ a compelling maze of events so random it's almost unbelievable. It all happened in a Central Queensland coastal city. Unfortunately it is all true. Author Information Warren grew up in the North Queensland town of Mackay. After his mother left home, he saw no future for himself in studying at school, living for the day and ignoring the future. He left school at the end of Year 10 with a dismal pass that did not justify the Commonwealth Scholarship he was awarded. After working as a farm labourer, cutting and carting sugar cane, he commenced an apprenticeship as a boilermaker, although he spent most of his apprenticeship in the drafting office. As well as being highly intelligent and athletic, Warren has always been good with his hands. As a young man he designed and built his own home. Since 1973 he has made a living working on the water. He started as a tug seaman and later worked as a master pearler and a reef charter operator on his own boat, eventually working throughout the entirety of the Great Barrier Reef. He still lives in Mackay with his wife of 43 years, Barbara. He does not regard himself as a writer but he has always been a story teller. He just had to put his story down on paper. The request for him to write about four harrowing years of his life came from his daughter. She was right, the story needed to be told.

World War II is ending. The enemy is advancing. In the far north‐eastern reaches of the Empire, the German citizens are terrified. The victorious Russian army is determined to sweep the area clean of German settlement and reports of atrocities are reaching the farmers of the village of Rucken in the Memelland. Franz, Helena and their two teenage daughters must flee before the arrival of the Russians. Leaving everything except what could be packed onto their farm wagon they travel west to escape death. Now they must struggle along overcrowded roads, evade falling artillery shells and the strafing of screaming fighter planes, bear biting hunger and suffer the freezing winter in an attempt to stay ahead of destruction. Amidst this terror and death they find that there are those who have not lost their humanity and are happy to help them in their struggle towards safety. But will this alone suffice? This story is based on the experiences of an actual family who hopes to see the dawn of a new day in areas conquered by more humane victors. Author Information Glen Natalier was born into a closely knit rural community in the Lockyer Valley in Queensland, Australia. He chose not to stay on the family farm but completed the necessary studies to become a high school teacher of geography and German language. During these teaching years he wrote a number of geography text books directed towards the syllabus requirements at that time. This allowed him to travel widely collecting, first hand, material and photographs to be used in the books. Years of teaching have left him with a love of learning and he finds that writing helps detract from the cares and worries which always seem to arise. The tennis and footballs of previous years have morphed into golf balls which bring great pleasure when seen against the green of the centre of a fairway. Now retired, he lives with his wife, Jill, caring for a teenage grandson. They live in a town just over a few hills from where he was born. Their four children and their families are scattered around Australia.

Australia is an upbeat, quirky and sometimes humorous lo ok at Australia and Australians ‐ the land, its people and its wildlife ‐ and what we value about our past that makes us proud now. Records, statistics, key dates, essential facts and achievements are presented in charts and lists, and supplemented by surprising information and intriguing stories about the people who shaped our nation ‐ the famous and the infamous. Fact spreads give thumbnail basics of topics such as prime ministers, buildings and classic Australian films. 'Then and now' spreads, which are largely pictorial. Throughout are poems and pertinent quotes. Photographic spreads highlight landscapes and wildlife. This engaging celebration of Australia is both an almanac and photographic record, the words and pictures coming together to create a vibrant picture of the country in which we live.

Is Urban Farming an Urban Myth?
We can’t all have a farm in the city. So, when enthusiasts talk about ‘urban farming’, they simply mean that city folk too are able to pursue limited ‘rural’ activities: some fish and edible water plants in a pond; growing a few fruit trees, vegetables and herbs in the backyard; keeping some chooks, ducks or bees maybe; or for a few on outer suburban blocks perhaps a dairy goat or a couple of pigs. And, if none of that is possible, one can simply buy (organic) meat and milk, or fruit and vege, to process at home: brewing beer, or making cheese, wine, bread or sausages; or preserving tomatoes, olives and other vegetables. The aim is not individual self-sufficiency, but to promote a culture where local is preferred over global, fresh and seasonal over imports, and freerange and organic practices over factory farming. It reflects the desire to reduce waste and for food to be honest and uncomplicated, without additives, chemicals and other pollutants, either in growing or processing it. And, as it is said that ‘animal agriculture is choking the earth and making us sick,’ it is also about reducing meat consumption and insisting on animal products from cruelty-free sources. In short, ‘urban farming’ reflects both a lifestyle and a political choice, and if you want to join in, DJA has the books to help you on your way. A triumph of urban farming is Growing Honest Food’s story of Tony and Lina Siciliano’s Rose Creek Estate in inner-suburban Melbourne, where, on a mere 3 acres, they manage to grow and produce commercial quantities of olive oil and wine, as well as a big harvest of seasonal vegetables and fruit for
preserving and immediate consumption. The book also features sections on keeping chickens and making sausages and salami, and is full of recipes and snippets on Calabrian food and cultural traditions. Less ambitious, but in the same spirit is Community Gardens, whilst Jackie French’s well-known classics, Backyard Self-sufficiency and The Wilderness Garden, have been continually available in numerous reprints and 2 editions for more than a quarter of a century! Organic growing of specific crops and plants are covered by Penny Woodward’s Asian Herbs and Vegetables, Garlic, and Herbs for Australian Gardens; Allen Gilbert’s All About Apples, Berry Bounty, Citrus, Just Nuts, and Tomatoes for Everyone; and by some specialist titles like Edible Water Gardens, and the Pumpkin Book. Small-scale animal husbandry is covered in Jackie French’s Chook Book, Thorndyke’s Lucky Ducks, Owens’ Keeping Your Own Free-range Pigs, and Cliff’s Bee Book and Home Dairy. For those without their own patch to get their hands dirty, the Weed Forager’s Handbook shows how to complement their weekly shop by collecting edible plants from the urban wilds of parks, nature strips, river banks and creek reserves; and the secrets of making the most of all that produce are revealed in Windfalls, Smoking Food, Drying Food, and Preserving Meat, whilst John Downes’ Natural Tucker Bread Book is the original go-to source for anyone interested in home-baked sourdough, yeasted or unleavened breads – it set the trend more than 20 years ago! Following the bestselling Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Laneways of Melbourne, this new sumptuous large format, hard cover 300 plus page coffee table book with over 1500 stunning photos is the latest in our Portraits of Victoria series. Melbourne is known for its picturesque parks and gardens and is regarded as Australia's garden city. Victoria is known as the Garden State, and it was in Melbourne's beginnings that Governor Charles La Trobe set aside parklands for people to enjoy the beauty of outdoor gardens. Land was reserved for the Fitzroy Gardens in 1848. Captain Cook's Cottage and over 1,000 trees including an avenue of 250 Dutch and English Elms are located here. The historic Carlton Gardens with the Royal Exhibition Buildings are included in the World Heritage list and annually host the immensely popular Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Kings Domain, established in 1854 encompasses La Trobe's Cottage, the Shrine of
The Yarra Valley and surrounding areas ‐ with its misty mornings, vineyards of gold, giant trees and unique attractions ‐ is a place of wonder and inspiration. This beautifully produced book includes stunning photos and historic information about all of the points of interest in the Yarra Valley from the famous Healesville Sanctuary, the early pioneer farm Gulf Station, hot air balloon rides and the Singing Gardens of C. J. Dennis at Toolangi, to Bruno's Art & Sculpture Garden in Marysville, the picturesque Alowyn Gardens at Yarra Glen, the beautiful Blue Lotus Water Garden near Warburton, a walk back in time at the Upper Yarra Museum, and the many award‐winning wineries. Little‐known places of beauty include the giant Californian Redwoods on the Warburton River walk, Marysville's Lady Talbot Drive and Platts Falls. With over 300 stunning photos together with insightful captions this book will be keenly sought by residents, tourists as well as nature lovers and history buffs. This is the second

Reprinted due to popular demand When Georges closed its doors on 5 October 1995, it had been trading for 115 years. Yet this famous department store, situated in the 'Paris End' of Collins Street, still lingers in the minds of many today. Remembering Georges documents the memories of staff and clients before this living connection fades. The unique 'voice' of each interviewee shines through, because the memories are in their own words. This richly illustrated book displays some of the fabulous images associated with Georges, reflecting the style and elegance of the store itself. Georges devotees, as well as those interested in fashion, design, and Melbourne's retail and social history, will revel in the stories held within. 'I, like many other people, remember Georges very fondly. I wanted to document the memories of staff and clients, and display some of the fabulous images
This lavishly produced book features rare images of Melbourne architecture, theatre and memorabilia. Bruce McBrien experienced first‐hand life at the top of Melbourne's social strata in the early 20th century. In rich detail, McBrien describes his childhood years living at Harrison House in Spring Street, and paints a vivid picture of inner‐city Melbourne in the early‐ to mid‐1900s. His family's social standing gave McBrien a rare perspective on Melbourne life, as is illustrated through his many brushes with iconic politicians, royalty and celebrities over the years. McBrien spent much of his life working as a musical theatre actor and is a passionate supporter and long‐serving volunteer of the National Trust of Victoria. Marvellous Melbourne and Me details not only the varied life of the man, but also that of his city.
Sculptures of Melbourne explores major changes in the nature of public sculpture. When Melbourne was established, sculpture was heavily influenced by the colonial legacy of neo‐classical bronze and marble statues. From 1980 onwards, public sculpture changed dramatically, not only in style but in materials, location and sheer numbers. This book tells the story of how the shifting trends in public sculpture moved from a classical style, to commemorative, to a corporate modernist style, to being integrated into urban design, and finally evolving into a contemporary style, which is non‐ traditional and temporary. The history includes controversial modernist sculptures such as 'The Yellow Peril' and unofficial laneway installation works. The book is written in an easy accessible style and is also a pictorial essay of Melbourne's sculptures.

Oik the crab has an attitude problem, but a brush with misfortune teaches him to value his family and friends. His colourful adventures make for a fun and engaging early reader chapter book, full to the brim with bright underwater characters.
Author Information James grew up on a family property near the small community of Merrygoen in central NSW. A typical village with all the essentials one could possibly want. A pub, a general store, church and a wheat silo to name a few! Growing up in the bush without television and other electronic distraction meant creating your own fun. You could be a cowboy, a spaceman or whatever you wanted to be. School essays became a highlight and a welcome opportunity for James to release his imagination. Looking to the future, James says, ‘We as people have to be more careful in the way we treat our environment. As with most things today, the Great Barrier Reef faces many devastating threats. The adults of tomorrow are our future and perhaps for now, The Incredible Oik the Crab is just the answer we need.’ With no formal training and self-taught, Eric always loved to draw. He took art at school and relished any opportunity to pick up a pencil at home. He enjoyed experimenting with different media – ink, pencil and coloured pencils. During his formative years, Eric’s heroes were people such as Walt Disney, Ralph Steadman, Heath Robinson, Georges Proaper Remi (known by the pen name ‘Herge’) and M.C. Escher. Eric was also inspired by the artwork of his grandfather, who worked in pastels and charcoal, and his mother who liked to use watercolour. Both of whom were also self taught. In Eric’s own words he says, ‘I would like to think some of my family’s talent has rubbed off on me! I take inspiration from life and how I would like life to be. Learning new methods and evolving my work is an ever-present companion. To visualise an image through a child’s eyes – colour and surprise detail is very important to their concept of the story.’ With no formal training and self-taught, Eric always loved to draw. The International Women’s Day book that states there is no solution to climate change without women’s empowerment. Big cities don’t have to mean a dystopian future. They can be turned around to be powerhouses of well-being and environmental sustainability – if we empower women. This book is a unique collaboration between C40 and Friends of the Earth showcasing pioneering city mayors, key voices in the environmental and feminist movements, and academics. The essays collectively demonstrate both the need for women’s empowerment for climate action and the powerful change it can bring. A rallying call – for the planet, for women, for everyone.
Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) have become the cultural icons of the 21st century. Figures like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are held up as role models who epitomise the modern pursuit of innovation, wealth and success. We now live, Bloom and Rhodes argue, in a ‘CEO society’ – a society where corporate leadership has become the model for transforming not just business, but all spheres of life, where everyone from politicians to jobseekers to even those seeking love are expected to imitate the qualities of the lionized corporate executive.

Sexuality is a complex and multifaceted domain – encompassing bodily, contextual and subjective experiences that resist ready categorisation. To claim the sexual as a viable research object therefore raises a number of important methodological questions: what is it possible to know about experiences, practices and perceptions of sex and sexualities? What approaches might help or hinder our efforts to probe such experiences? Edited by Charlotte Morris, Paul Boyce, Andrea Cornwall, Hannah Frith, Laura Harvey, and Yingying Huang
A city of over one million people caught between volcanic eruptions and armed conflict, Goma has come to embody the ‘tragedy’ that is the Democratic Republic of Congo. Often portrayed by outsiders as a living hell, Goma is nevertheless a city of opportunity for others.Drawing on a rich tapestry of personal narratives, from taxi driver to market trader, doctor to local humanitarian worker, Goma: Stories of Strength and Sorrow from Eastern Congo provides an engaging and unconventional portrait of an African city.

Hotel on Shadow Lake
When Maya was a girl, her grandmother was everything to her: teller of magical fairy tales, surrogate mother, best friend. Then her grandmother disappeared without a trace, leaving Maya with only questions to fill the void. Twenty-seven years later, her grandmother’s body is found in a place she had no connection to.

Fire on the Mountain
Desperate for answers, Maya begins to unravel secrets that go back decades, from 1910s New York to 1930s Germany and beyond. But when she begins to find herself spinning her own lies in order to uncover what happened, she must decide whether her life, and a chance at love, are worth risking for the truth.
When NGO worker Nick drops unexpectedly into the lives of Pieter and Sara Lisson, he feels he has found the parents he never had. Nick is enraptured by their lives of splendour and acclaim as much as the stirring setting of the African city where they live, but he soon senses a secret at the heart of his new family.

Now, having spent nearly five years behind bars, Rose is just weeks away from freedom. Her probation officer Cate must decide whether Rose is remorseful for Luke’s death, or whether she remains a threat to society. As Cate is drawn in, she begins to doubt her own judgement. The closer he gets to death, the more he starts to live Joel lives in a nursing home and he’s not one bit happy about it. He doesn’t like being told when to eat, when to sleep, when to take his pills. In fact, he doesn’t like living at all, and he’s decided he’s going to end his life on his terms. When he tells retired soap-actor Frank about his dark plan, Frank urges him to go out with a bang. Together, they embark on a mission to find the perfect suicide, and along the way, discover the strength of friendship when you really feel alone.
Courage can be found in the smallest of places. Four-year-old Danny lives with his mother, Natalie, in a small Sussex town. Life is a struggle and when they are threatened with a benefits sanction, salvation appears in the form of a Job Centre employee called Karen. But Karen’s impact is to reach far beyond this one generous gesture, as she and Natalie embark on an intense relationship. Told in the voice of an intelligent, passionate and unusual child, Tale of a Tooth is an immersive and compelling look at the impact of domestic abuse on a vulnerable family unit.

Loo Rolls to Lycra: The Ironman Dreams of an IBD Sufferer is the inspirational and insightful biography of Caroline Bramwell, a wife and mother who believed her life was going down the toilet when she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of every public toilet, bush or tree to dive behind, and after numerous extreme dietary regimes, Caroline elected to have her large intestine removed, to live with a permanent ileostomy. A self-confessed couch potato, Caroline turned to sport after surgery, dispelling the medical profession’s ‘you can’t do that’ attitude by announcing her London-to-Paris 24-hour cycle ride. Motivated to learn to swim by her children, her enthusiasm for triathlon was lit after meeting Ironmanworld champion Chrissie Wellington. Caroline has competed at all triathlon distances, including the full Ironman UK, and has become one of the UK’s leading ostomy triathletes. Loo Rolls to Lycra is the epitome of the self-belief that anything is possible.
Pironi: The Champion that Never Was relates the remarkable story of motor racing’s ‘forgotten man’, ex-Ferrari F1 driver and offshore powerboat racer, Didier Pironi. The book charts an incredible journey which took the young Parisian to the heights of triumph and the depths of despair. Before he joined the legendary Ferrari stable, Pironi was already a Formula Renault, Le Mans and grand prix winner. By 1982, the time had surely come for the enigmatic Frenchman to become his country’s first Formula 1 world champion. He was to come tantalisingly close to achieving that lifetime ambition, ahead in the world championship and in pole position for the German Grand Prix – before crashing so disastrously in practice. Over the next five years he fought a long and painful battle to return to the cockpit to reclaim the title that had eluded him that grim morning. It was not to be. Thereafter Didier turned his attention to offshore powerboating, where his remarkable life would come to a shattering end in the icy waters of the English Channel.

Set amid the glamour and bravado of 1980s Formula 1, The Power and the Glory tells the story of a rivalry unsurpassed in motorracing history. By the mid-80s Alain Prost had firmly established himself as leader of the F1 pack. Winning Grands Prix almost at will, the French ace radiated invincibility. But then came the emergence of Ayrton Senna, sparking a decadelong battle for supremacy out on the track. Although chalk and cheese in terms of character and background, the two men were driven by the same burning desire: to become Formula 1’s heavyweight champion of the world, its undisputed king. Senna and Prost would both go on to win multiple world championships in what was a golden era for F1 racing. Their Suzuka showdowns of 1988-90 attracted record worldwide audiences and popularised the sport as never before. An intimate portrait of two unique competitors, The Power and the Glory is a supercharged story of acrimony and sheer ambition.
Since Victorian times, the MCC had embraced the amateur ideal that cricket was more than a game. It was the very essence of camaraderie and good sportsmanship. Yet for all their evangelising, the game’s privileged elite were part of a British establishment which revelled in its national prestige and imperial hegemony. And winning at cricket was essential to maintaining that stature. Ambassadors of Goodwill assesses the MCC’s attempt to marry these conflicting objectives and foster goodwill within the Empire via long, formal overseas tours. After the war, the amateur ideal suffered when Len Hutton was appointed England’s first professional captain. His uncompromising leadership brought success on the field but discord off it. Managers were installed to restore diplomatic harmony but, with the growing upheavals of the late 60s, cricket became increasingly associated with nationality, race and professional cynicism. Ray Illingworth’s controversial win in Australia in 1970/71 clearly signalled the MCC’s waning influence.
