JULY 2018
Words from the Wise
July 2018 You do odd things in life I think, or maybe not. Just finishing my first work trip to UK in many years and sitting contemplating the next moves. The Bluebird Cafe in Chelsea has just served my lunch; hummus, celery, carrot, radish and cucumber: paradise for a Friday lunch. The London Book Fair has been great with many old friends encountered as well as publisher meetings to further the "International" business. A realistic approach to how to bring tasty lists to booksellers from UK publishers where no stock exists in ANZ. The Monday before the LBF I made an overdue visit to Gardners in Eastbourne. They like investing in the Book Trade. If you are in London it is worth the visit to confirm your interest in the Book Trade. Thank you to Ian Roberts from Gardners who hosted my visit and his employers who picked up the tab. Good to see Jay Lansdown at the LBF to fly the bookseller flag. After going to 25 ABA / BEA's I always thought the experience to be so valuable as it raised an awareness in the industry first hand rather than relying on the local custodians to present the publisher view. As the sun did not shine for the 7 days I was there it was a welcome relief to get off the flight in Perth and experience the new outdoor lounge at Perth International Airport; and the 17 hour flight - it is what it is. I do have to mention I met the Rebel Girls 2 publishers at the LBF; I have to thank you all for the support for this title and remind you that you have all of the market to yourself as there is no edition going into DDS's, etc. Confident we can sell (via Gardners) 15,000 copies into ANZ in the next couple of months and then a crack at Christmas. There may be another volume this year! Watch this space. Books and Business. How are sales and overheads? Well our sales from the online businesses reach all-time highs each month and the traditional book trade does not have growth to it. Why? It is probably (I am sure it is) due to having books outside the top 1000 titles that are the juice of the booksellers sales. Our bestselling titles for the last three months are #1 Hey Warrior PB, #2 Weed Foragers Handbook #3 Hey Warrior HB The problem of being a tenant in two locations with two landlords has surfaced badly over the last two week; two floods! Same landlord, same laptops that get drenched and who know what else; and we can't charge for loss of work inputs! My own laptop died on the way back from UK - means I have done three laptops in 5 years; bloody uncomfortable cost and downtime. I get to the point where I am at a loss as to what to do next.
Happy Days are here again. The upside is that there are plenty of highly visible new titles on the release road ahead. The showcasing will start at the ABA in June where we have again taken a sponsorship position. We are not members of any professional bodies (ABA / APA / SPN) so the money goes into sponsorship. Today I am off to Sydney for a full days meetings tomorrow starting with a breakfast meeting with Tom Thompson from Editions Tom Thompson, followed by 6 meetings with Lisa Messenger and some of the Sydney head offices. Lisa has opted to virtually go on the road full; time as she has dispensed with her magazine The Collective. We will have her new book "Risk & Resiliance" for September 19th and you will all hear about it well before then. Tom on the other hand has a full list of those outstanding titles from the likes of Ion Idriess and many other Absolute Classic Australian Publishing. We are also negotiating for the big book on Broderick Smith and a major book by Clinton !!!!!!!!!!!!!. If you are coming to the ABA we will have David Tenenbaum in attendance working from the booth on his list for H2 this year. I don't know how many of you read "The Saturday Paper"- I pick it up at the airport lounge gratis (costs $4.00 otherwise). I wanted to give a shout out to the lead article by Mike Seccombe and his appraisal of the new book by David Pilling titled "The Growth Delusion". Please pick it up or read it online. Whilst I am not a flat earther I am in strong support of the premise of the article. That is that we confuse endless GDP growth through endless population growth. And to quote Pilling “Some things – safe streets, good jobs, open spaces, a sense of security and well-being – are a good in themselves,” he says." Bob Carr is also quoted "'Australian growth is dependent on the highest rate of immigration proportionately of any developed country.. It is excessively dependent on ...building apartments and struggling to build infrastructure" Drive around Melbourne to see at first hand. I also have to respond to one of the publishers passing onto me an op ed about the Amazon store at Columbus Circle in New York and the evil created. The biggest retailer in Columbus Circle would now be Amazon with the bookshop and then the bottom floor with Whole Foods. I just hope none of the Whole Food customers are members of Amazon Prime? We all share then one consumer and always have to do the best shot at winning them to our individual businesses. Good luck and good reading! DJ

This book is the culmination of about twenty years of research by Brisbane‐based Greame Cliffe, and comprehensively details the history of the Australian comics medium like never before. This volume will be the one that Australian comic historians of the future ‐ and those of today ‐ will turn to: detailed biographies of every single Australian comic book artist and every publishing house, and more ‐ this book will be regarded as the seminal work in its field for years to come! British comic historian Denis Gifford says this is one of the books he is most anticipating reading this year.
Author Information Graeme Cliffe has been involved with Australian comics since 1981, when he served as a co-editor of the locally produced fanzine Spectrum. More recently, he has provided advice for local researcher and author Kevin Patrick’s long-running Comics Down Under column and blog. He presented the retrospective “Science Fiction in Australian Comic Books” at the World Science Fiction Convention in Melbourne in 2010. Internationally, Graeme provided advice for a 2005 article devoted to Australia’s original comic book industry, published in the U.S.A. in the comic book fanzine Alter Ego. He has also acted as a consultant on comic books published in Australia for researchers Steve Holland (Bear Alley) and Paul Gravett (The Leather Nun & Other Incredibly Strange Comics). From ‘Sunbeams’ to Sunset: the Rise and Fall of the Australian Comic Book (1924 to 1965) is his first book.

This is the graphic, authentic and often humorous autobiography of a young man's journey into Melbourne's underworld and nightclub scene in the recent past. 'The Hammer' was a feared enforcer capable of inflicting indescribable pain on anyone that stood in has way. Supreme violence and a manipulative calculating streak were tools of the trade. This story gives the reader a rare insight into addiction, the dark art of violence and ego involved in the world of a drug dealer, debt collector and stand over man in Melbourne's underworld scene. An embracing family background and unwavering ability to believe he was destined for redemption allowed 'The Hammer' to claw his way back from the darkness and use his hard‐earned experience to assist men to break the cycle of addiction and crime and re‐discover their own power and spirit. Nice work mate! Proud of you and glad to call you my friend. ‐ Trevor Hendy AM

Available Now At 23, Scott Harris had a dream job, great friends and a passion for the outdoors. Then one sunny day in November 2008, everything came to a crashing halt: his 450cc dirt bike slammed into his buddy's in a head‐on collision that nearly killed them both. Fifteen days in an induced coma, a complete facial reconstruction and countless surgeries were followed by years of intensive rehabilitation. With exhausting mental and physical effort, Scott learned how to walk, talk and think again. He could have given up ‐ with only one working arm and a severe brain injury, every day was a challenge. Instead, with the help of an amazing medical team, Scott pushed himself to the limit, setting goals and developing the will to achieve them. In time Scott set his ultimate goal: to travel solo around the world. By snowboarding in Canada, backpacking in Europe, sailing down the Nile, and island‐hopping in Greece ‐ where he met the love of his life, Jasmine ‐ Scott regained his independence and built a new and fulfilling life. 'Crashing Into Potential' is the incredible story of coming to terms with acquired physical disabilities, living with an injured brain, and the unfailing determination to never give up.

Moved by his travel experiences in Afghanistan and encounters with war veterans in Australia, filmmaker Benjamin Gilmour wrote a screenplay set in the current Afghan conflict. His story was about a former soldier returning to Afghanistan to look for the family of a civilian he had killed in battle and to seek forgiveness. Gilmour cast Sydney actor Sam Smith in the lead role, and the two of them flew to Pakistan where they planned to shoot the film with funding from a local investor. But the plan fell through. Their shoot was blocked by the Pakistani secret service and the money disappeared. Instead of cutting their losses and returning home, Gilmour and Smith decided to carry on to Afghanistan and make the film in a country still at war. Collaborating with a small crew of Afghans, Gilmour and Smith set about shooting their scenes in one of the most dangerous provinces crawling with Taliban and Islamic State militants. After two months living rough, facing countless obstacles and near‐death experiences, Gilmour and Smith emerged from Afghanistan with a movie. This is director Benjamin Gilmour¹s true behind‐the‐scenes account of making the film Jirga in Afghanistan. Jirga will have its WORLD PREMIERE in competition at the 2018 SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL in June.
Author Information Benjamin Gilmour is an author and filmmaker, director of the films 'Jirga‘ (2018), 'Paramedico' (2012) and 'Son of a Lion’ (2008), author of the books ‘Paramedico – Around the World by Ambulance’ (HarperCollins), a tie-in with his recent film of the same name, and ‘Warrior Poets’ (Pier 9) about the making of his first feature film in Pakistan. He is based in northern New South Wales, Australia, where he lives with his wife Kaspia and three children, Paloma, Romeo and Bohème.

Meet Japan follows John Urquhart's career within Australia and internationally and has given him a unique perspective on the meat industry. Being the son of a livestock buyer, John was fortunate to gain experience in all aspects of meat processing during nineteen years with Thomas Borthwick and Sons, the then leading meat exporter. In 1970, John was a team member in the pioneering of chilled vacuum packaged beef shipments to Japan. Representing Borthwicks in Japan during the tumultuous mid 1970s gave him and his wife Lois an appetite to learn more of all aspects of Japanese culture. Returning to Japan in 1979 for six years to represent the Australian meat industry in North Asia, John gained a deeper appreciation of the fast‐evolving change in the Japanese total food market and the introduction of chilled lamb to the Japanese market ‐ his experiences are recounted lovingly, with humorous insight, thoughtful tales, personal letters and anecdotes throughout.

To the vanishing point where light will expand/where light wants the eye to go ("Towards Light") Light, as a physical and metaphorical entity recurs in many of the poems in this new collection by Sarah Day. Light makes its presence felt in these poems as a source of illumination and grace, it is also the means by which the flaws and discrepancies of the present and past are highlighted. "Sarah Day is a poet of wonderful attentiveness. She notices everything, persuading us, as readers, that she has seen and heard the living world truly. Wherever she stands, she gives lyrical utterance in Towards Light to our fresh, daily life, vibrant in its perpetuity." Christopher Wallace‐Crabbe
Author Information Sarah Day lives in Tasmania. She emigrated from England to Australia with her family as a child. Awards for her work include the Anne Elder, the Queensland Premier’s Award and the University of Melbourne Wesley Michel Wright Prize. The Ship was joint winner of the ACT Award. Her books have also been short‐listed for the NSW Premier’s and the CJ Dennis awards. Her New & Selected Poems(Arc UK) received a UK Poetry Society special commendation. She has been a member of the Literature Board of the Australia Council and was Poetry Editor of Island for seven years. She lives with her family in Hobart where she teaches Creative Writing and English as a Second Language to year twelve students.

Monasteries and gaols: David Foster reflects that during the course of his life the monasteries have emptied while the gaols are doing nicely. Set in Goulburn and its surrounds, where Foster resides, The Contemptuary is a lament for a dying faith, a commentary on prison life and, perhaps unexpectedly from Foster in this, his sixteenth novel, an unputdownable whodunnit. 'Attempt to characterise Foster's writing and eventually one will run out of adjectives. There is simply no one remotely like him in contemporary Australian fiction. He is so far ahead of everyone else that it's not funny.' Australian Book Review
Author Information David Foster is one of Australia’s best known and most respected novelists. In addition to writing twelve other novels, including the Miles Franklin Award winning The Glade Within the Grove (1997). He has worked intermittently for Australia Post over the past forty years, as a postman, relief postman and mail contractor in both the ACT and rural NSW.

Through Jo Langdon's gaze, the ordinary world is transformed into a snow globe of wondrous possibility. The city and its objects move impressionistically, summer bodies dissemble, and daily routines take on an uncanny glow. Domestic realities are glimpsed or suggested, small histories reveal a chiaroscuro of darkness and light. [...] Deftly extending the visual sensibility of late modernists like Barbara Guest and Veronica Forrest‐Thomson, Glass Life draws together a vivid sensibility with observations that are both sharply astute and powerfully intimate. This second, major collection confirms Langdon as a compelling force in contemporary poetry. ‐ Ann Vickery With wit and shimmering precision Jo Langdon's poems connect the surreal, imagined world to what is felt. Her music is spare, wounding, hypnotic. ‐ Michelle Cahill Jo Langdon shows us the world in a snow‐dome sequence. In these delicate poems, we observe how the subtleties and shifts of our interior lives merge with the changing qualities of light or weather. This is what she gifts us: an insight into how exquisitely we are held by the world's spaces.
Author Information Jo Langdon is an early career researcher and teacher in literary studies, and currently an editor for the journal Mascara Literary Review. She is the author of essays, fiction and poetry. Her chapbook of poems, Snowline, co‐won the 2011 Whitmore Press manuscript prize. Glass Life is her first full‐length collection.

Nineteen‐year‐old Darryl Bishop was away droving when his birth‐date was drawn from the Tenth National Service Ballot, 1969. On the 13th May 1971, Private Bishop departed Australia on HMAS Sydney, having earned his place in the Fourth Royal Australian Regiment(4RAR)'s Second Tour of southern Vietnam via gruelling training regimes at Kapooka, Canungra, and Townsville. Shot through with larrikin spirit and dry humour, yet unflinchingly honest, KILLING BABIES recounts the narrator's journey into a war‐zone which would test his valour, and an exotic world of sin city bars which would test his values. Through the vehicle of vivid memoirs Bishop transports us into the heart and mind of a young bushman who, by luck of the draw and by Government decree, becomes an ANZAC Digger. Bishop delivers rich detail and dialogue in the best "bush yarn" tradition, as we travel with him from Army Bases, back tracks, and night clubs, to South Vietnam's booby‐trapped bamboo groves and rugged, jungle‐clad ranges. In these pages Darryl Bishop invites you to sample the life he and his mates lived during the dying days of Australia's involvement in that most unpopular war. Author Information Darryl Bishop is a stockman. He is a jack-of-all-trades who laughingly says he is a master of none. He broke in a lot of horses at Brewarrina while moving mobs of sheep and cattle along the stock routes and contract mustering in that district of north-west New South Wales, worked in shearing sheds in the north and south of the state as a roustabout and woolroller and was at one time an Opal Miner. He worked as a labourer on construction sites and as an Iron Worker (Tradesmen’s lackey) at Dunlop’s Tyre Factory in Sydney in 1974 and was in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, as a Backhoe Operator when Cyclone Tracy went through Darwin on Christmas night of that year. Apart from the short time spent in Sydney, eight months in Townsville and the time he was away in Vietnam, he has lived all his life west of the Great Dividing Ranges. He hung up his stockwhip, spur and saddle in 2003 and moved to the western Darling Downs with his little mate, Midge, where he and she now live the quiet life of retirement; however, he still likes to keep his hand in by doing occasional work in the cattle and sheep yards of friends in the district at mate’s rates. "Shafts of memory like light from thunderclouds before a storm swept over them. There had been another time and another place when they had walked this path together." When Becky left Australia and an unhappy marriage for the Emerald Isle, she didn't know what to expect. She always felt a strong pull to Ireland and had constant thoughts that there was a time in her past life where she had known love. Urged on by dying neighbour, Jean Marcel, she returns to Ireland to find her destiny. She arrives, but little does she know that long ago a true Irish beauty, whom she resembled, had travelled this same path. Was this why she felt a special connection to Jean? This is the story of Bridie Hennessey, a young, Irish, Catholic girl who left her family home in Connemara in Northern Ireland to take on employment as a horse gentler with an English, Protestant family at Faulkner Farm in Galway Bay, and falls crazily in love with son and heir David Faulker. This is also a poignant story of young love during the time of Ireland's win for Home Rule and the lovers' enlistment in WW1, separating them in England and France. New author Judith Flitcroft's amazing ability to portray hauntingly beautiful Ireland, the majesty of the horses, the brutality of the war and the strength of tender love, has the ability to transport the reader right into the scenes. A recommended read.
Author Information When I retired from teaching after 50 years in the classroom, my principal said of me ‐ "Judith will always have her family, and the children she works with, interests at heart. I've no doubt these will remain in her heart, along with her passion for music, theatre, horses and history." That was true. I have kept these passions alive.

The Peripheral Visions 2‐volume series is a unique, award‐winning reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood's 44 ghost stories to date, including three original pieces of fiction. These memorable tales display Hood's uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives ‐ both inner and outer ‐ haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humour and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood's stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach. As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There's always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery. This is Volume 1 of the trade paperback version, comprising the first 3 of the 6 haunted sections of the complete 2‐ volume series, as well as 4 illustrations by Nick Stathopoulos.
Author Information Robert Hood has been called everything from "a brilliant fantasist" (Jack Dann) to "Aussie horror's wicked godfather" (Black Magazine). He is a highly respected, award‐winning author, considered by many to be one of Australia's grand masters of horror and weird fiction. In a career that spans 40 years, he has published speculative fiction of all kinds ‐ including most notably 44 short stories including ghosts, hauntings, and spectral horrors ‐ in his collection, Peripheral Visions.

Available Now This volume opens with a full‐length book of new poems by Petra White, A Hunger. Bound‐in with it are her two prior books, The Simplified World and The Incoming Tide. The new poems of A Hunger are as lucid as they are mysterious, crafted for the ear, and for an emotional tone that slips delicately between mischievous irony and a cut‐through bleakness or joy. A strong theme, in parts, is depression, where White presses beyond personal response into examining darkness itself, in a fierce art that deliberately gives and asks for no indulgence. The same goes for her love poems, in a sequence that plunges into the wild contradictions and poignancy of new love, with glances to Renaissance poets. Contemporary worlds ‐ people and place ‐ are foundation for this poetry, which is haunted by inscrutable time. Her well‐known 'Southbank' from her first book is given a further turn in a new sequence, 'The Sound of Work' ‐ this is one of the few contemporary poets to write convincingly of office work. In all, White's poems inhabit life's fragility with a light‐footed constancy. By adding her prior two books, the Press intends not only to keep them in print, but to lay out for readers the fullness of the growth of an oeuvre. The poet has taken the opportunity to make a handful of excisions and revisions.
Author Information Petra White was born in Adelaide in 1975, and lives in Melbourne, where she works in a government department and is studying for a Master of Public Policy and Management. Her first book of poetry, The Incoming Tide, was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier’s Prize and the ACT Poetry Prize. The Simplified World was shortlisted for the 2011 Judith Wright Prize in the A.C.T Awards; and was shortlisted also for the John Bray Prize in the 2011 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. Her most recent book A Hunger, was published in August 2014. The Simplified World also shared the annual Grace Leven Prize for Poetry for 2010 with two other books, Patience, Mutiny by L K Holt and Phantom Limb by David Musgrave, all of them published by JLP. In the Prize’s distinguished sixty-four-year history, this is the first time that three books have been honoured together. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Beginning with the idea of poetry as one code among many, this collection explores the notion of applying patterns derived from mathematics to the conception and creation of poems. There is a peculiar sort of energy that emanates from an active confluence between two codes: a beat frequency, a moire. It is at once a kind of friction, and a marriage. The eight forms Jordie Albiston has developed for this book are generous to her aims because they are stable, just, and have as their unifying principle order. They work as worthy vehicles for what the poet wants to say, with shoulders broad enough to bear the intricacies and depth of her precise interior world. As well, they operate as commentaries on the fragility of existence, a sense of chaos, and broader discordant realities of the 'post‐truth' human condition. This is not a book of high mathematics: rather, an attempt to migrate some of the innate robustness, clarity and elegance of Euclidean thought into the realm of poetic structure. Albiston's formal experiments do not operate as mere theory, dry equations or games, but authentic poetic events, at the same time harmoniously familiar, and strange.
Author Information Jordie Albiston's latest titles are The Weekly Poem: 52 exercises in closed & open forms (Puncher & Wattmann, 2014) and Jack & Mollie (& Her) (UQP, 2016). She lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Steven is a dynamic marketing man, Jewish but not religious. When he begins developing a new business strategy for an established chain of Church‐run op‐shops, he quickly forms a strong working relationship with Frances, one of the board members. Frances is a middle‐aged practising Catholic who lives in the mountain ranges outside Melbourne. She lives a life shaped by nature, her religion and the seasons. It provides her with contentment and a deep spiritual dimension. The bedrock of their growing bond is the conversations they engage in, as they learn more about each other through religion, history and the relationships that have defined them. Their business formality slowly becomes a friendship, then something more. Both Steven and Frances maintain a steady control on their relationship, but they both know it can't last forever. Frances is experiencing a sexual and religious awakening, and Steven finds himself increasingly at odds with her deep spirituality. Even as their relationship becomes more and more intense, their time together is heading towards an unexpected and dramatic finish.
Author Information Roger Mendelson was born and raised in Melbourne, which has been his home city except for three years living in the UK. He is married to Sue and has three adult children. He is the author of two business books and this is his first work of fiction.

With over 100 amazing Aussie inventions! The Great BIG Book of Aussie Inventions takes you on a colourful, panoramic journey from the Aussie bush to the coast and introduces you to some of the weird, whacky and amazing inventions that have come from the land Down Under. Most people know popular Aussie inventions such as the boomerang, the Hills Hoist and the Lamington. But did you also know that Aussies invented the army tank, plastic money and shoe polish? You'll have hours of fun discovering and learning about Australia's well known and more obscure inventions.....try and find the elusive Bunyips hidden on each page.
Sam the giraffe had a wonderful silly smile and a very, very long neck that made him feel, well...silly. One day he met a peacock and a hen who both offered to help him with his worries. Sam ignored the wise hen and was beguiled by the peacock's finery and silver tongue. Accepting a gift of gold, Sam sells his smile for a new neck, or lack thereof. But now he was no longer happy and the neck did not suit him at all, so he asks the wise hen to help him regain his old self, his silly smile and his very, very long neck. Silly Sam's Smile is a story about knowing and accepting our unique personalities and not wanting to be like others. It is also a cautionary tale about devious, bejewelled peacocks of dubious orientation and the trouble they can cause!
Here comes Lulu and her dog Yo‐Yo, out driving in their little yellow car that goes Putt Putt... Look out here comes the fast green car...

In the coastal Queensland town of Midnight Cove, thirteen‐year‐old Curtis Creed's world is falling apart. Once a talented upcoming surfer, he cannot bring himself to return to the ocean. His inability to overcome his fear earns him the ridicule of his older brother, Dylan. Worse, his family is struggling to cope with the loss of their father in a rock fishing accident. The summer holiday looks long and lonely for Curtis until he meets Navaya, a mysterious sea dweller he rescues from fishing line in a rock pool. When Curtis agrees to help Navaya find the Moami, the key to an undersea cavern hiding her people's most precious secrets, he embarks on a dangerous quest that sees him join forces with awkward but brilliant new girl in town, Morgan. Walking to school up Meeks Mountain, she makes a new friend and finds herself the Keeper of the Optiscope. Before she can learn its true purpose her mysterious friend is gone, leaving few clues about the Optiscope's powers. With her grandad's help, Mia uncovers its secrets and the Dream Team embark on adventures to Nilimbia, an awesome world of Dream Weavers and endless magic, where a little imagination and hope makes the impossible possible. Author Information Natalie is an Australian freelance writer, children’s book author, illustrator and speaker. Her latest children’s book, Mia’s Optiscope, is soon to be available in paperback. 'This is the story of the 'oo'. It's an amusing sound for all of you.' The Oo in Uluru is a fun Australian‐themed phoneme story that teaches young readers about the vowel sound 'oo' and where they can find it in different words. Author Information When Judith first read Oh, the Places You Will Go! to children at an international school in Italy, the repetition of the sounds and letters seemed to resonate in Dr. Seuss’ fun and whimsical stories. The children would recall the sounds and manipulate the letters to make different words. However, while attempting to master the many vagaries of spelling it became much more of a challenge. With so many peculiarities in the English language the mind boggles! There are 42 unique sounds and hundreds of ways to spell them, but how do you explain the words rough, cough and plough are different when there’s no rhyme or reason? After further studies in linguistics and a slight tendency for the absurd, she began to combine the vowel sounds with the various spelling patterns into stories. The Oo in Uluru is a celebration of the long ‘oo’ sound and the connection between the land and animals indigenous to the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. As an English teacher and intrepid traveler, Judith has steered herself to some of the most exotic and unexpected places on earth much to her delight and sometimes wonder! When she’s not writing children’s stories or poetry, she’s probably immersed in another culture or teaching meditation and music therapy. Judith started Sound Owl Stories, which aims to promote literacy in young readers by combining literature and phonics into fun and lyrical stories. It can be found online on www.judithbarkerauthor.com Illustrator Information Originally from New Zealand, Janie’s childhood was spent in the southern City of Dunedin, where she attended art school and then went on to train as an Art Teacher. Many years were spent inspiring children with her love for drawing, painting and playing with art materials. In 2006 Janie moved to Australia with her family and now lives in Foster, South Gippsland, a hub of artistic talent. Janie holds children’s art classes in her studio, Art Blast, that looks directly toward Wilsons Promontory where amazing changing colours of the sky can be seen throughout the seasons. This is where Janie spends most of her time, usually with her naughty border collie Lucy snuggled under her feet. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

A little girl finds she has an emptiness. She embarks on a journey of friendship, music and giving, and along the way she finds her own joyful fulfilment. Author Information Andrew Pratley is a surfer who completed his Bachelor of Education and Graduate Diploma in Arts Education before finally finishing an Associate Degree in Multimedia. After teaching for a number of years he formed a band, The Bunyips, who released three kids' albums, two of which were with ABC Music. The Bunyips performed at a vast variety of venues in both Australia and Japan. Around this time Andrew also worked as a solo children’s performer at a range of children’s care services. As a child Andrew lived in the Solomon Islands for four years. He spent much of this time swimming and canoeing in a crystal clear river and still has a strong aversion to wearing shoes. His interests now also include drawing, painting, travel and photography. Andrew’s book, Empty, is about a young girl who is seeking a sense of purpose, belonging and meaning. She is caught up in the struggle of self-doubt and insecurity when she learns that developing friendships and helping others can actually help create the meaning and sense of belonging she is searching for. The book encourages children to have an outward focus and broaden their personal horizons. Andrew resides on the NSW North Coast with his wife and five children where he currently works as a school teacher (when he’s not surfing…). Illustrator Information Angel was born with a pencil in her hand and a slightly faulty halo around her head. Commonly mistaken for a giraffe, Angel was raised on Sydney’s northern beaches and graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications. She works both digitally and in physical artworks, across a range of different mediums. Angel is an in-house designer of children’s books and a freelance illustrator.

Hare 'n' There is a delightful tale of adventure that evokes the spirit of animal life in the Australian bush. For children's educational literature this is another winner from Jenny Morris. Bluey Blue Tongue forms a plan. Then gives out sound advice On how to fix a problem. He makes it sound so nice. But is the plan just hare‐brained, risky, rash, perverse, That doesn't jot or little help; in fact makes it worse? Perhaps events unfolding stew hairline cracks of doubt? So is it harum‐scarum? Or does Bluey's plan work out? Author Information Jenny Morris has always enjoyed reading and writing poetry and rhyme, but even more so now as she has grandchildren to delight. Jenny was born on Gibraltar and her British Army father was further posted to Germany and Cyprus, eventually settling back in the UK on the family farm. Nevertheless, we claim her as one of our own Aussie writers as she is married to an Australian, has lived here for forty-four years, thirty-five of them in the NSW bush.

Flavio the Flamingo loves eating. In fact, he'll eat anything. This causes Flavio a flatulence problem. Follow Flavio on his quest to control his burping bottom. Author Information After penning numerous poems, often humorous, over the years, Cassidy Jackson-Carroll fulfilled a burning passion by writing her first children’s book, Flavio the Flamingo. Often on the search for adventure, Cassidy has travelled extensively and found herself in places as remote as Kokoda, Kilimanjaro and Kathmandu. Her wanderlust often allows her to encounter varying animals, part of her inspiration for creating the character of Flavio. When not globe-trotting around the world, Cassidy spends her time inspiring the minds of the younger generation (she is known as Miss J-C in the classroom), and patrolling the beaches of Rainbow Bay, Queensland, where she is a Surf Life Saver. Cassidy is currently trying to perfect her ‘cross step’ skill on a longboard, and hopes to kick a winning goal in her first season of AFL. Illustrator Information Graeme is a visual artist and illustrator. He was born in Narrabri, North-West NSW, Australia. He has loved drawing since childhood. He works from home and has a busy practice, completing commissions for portraiture and illustrations for children's books. Graeme's subjects and styles are broad, from fierce dragons to happy humans, one-eyed chooks to piano-crunching pachyderms, rendered in graphite, ink, charcoal, acrylic or pixels. He has twice been a finalist for portraiture in the Mortimer Prize for Realism (2011-2012) and received the Grand Champion award for his work 'Egret on Tap' in the Gunnedah Art Exhibition 2013. From 2013 he began illustrating children's books and has produced numerous pictures for authors, filling twelve books by early 2017. Graeme completes portraits in between illustrations. He is currently working on the sketches for an exhibition of his fantasy works, including dragons, phoenixes, demons and other beasties.

My brother Quentin has autism, which means he sees the world a little differently to me. Mum says lots of people have autism, but everyone is unique. Quentin always lets his quirkiness shine, and when I'm around him I'm never afraid to be myself. If you ask me, our quirks are what makes us who we are!
Author Information Indianna is a recent Screen Production graduate from Flinders University, Adelaide, with a passion for the creative arts, writing and film. For several years she has also worked as an in‐home carer for two brothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Through her work she noticed that there is a lack of educational material for young siblings and peers of children with ASD. Being a difficult concept for young children to understand, she began to develop Quirky Quentin as a way of motivating kids to draw similarities between themselves and those they know on the spectrum. She hopes that this book will promote understanding and awareness of such a common and diverse disorder, and will encourage children to celebrate the joy in being different. Illustrator Information Aleksandra Szmidt grew up in a town in the south of Poland and currently resides in New Zealand. In Poland, she worked as a graphic designer. Upon moving she decided to pursue her dream as a freelance illustrator. From her home studio, Aleksandra creates one-of-a-kind artwork for clients across the world. Her love of drawing plants and animals is attributed to her landscape architecture studies. However, she prefers to design magical things often detached from reality. The majority of her artwork is traditionally created with watercolour, gouache, coloured pencil. She also uses computer program like Photoshop. She loves her job and it brings her immense joy and an emotional connection to her artwork.

A wallaby and her joey are causing chaos in the garden! A big family of cousins, aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents must find a way to KEEP HER OUT before she causes too much damage. But in the end, do they really want her to go?
Author Information Ganga worked in education teaching English both at secondary school and university levels. There weren’t many options available when she was young and the teaching profession was the one she stumbled into. It was a good choice since she is a people person and enjoyed working with children and young adults. Fortunately, it was a transportable skill that fitted in with her roving partner’s career path. Their work was mainly in developing countries around the world. Interacting with young people in these places was a special privilege. Reading, writing and travelling were three constants as they juggled careers, children and keeping in touch with both families across continents. Retirement has given Ganga the opportunity to try out things she never did before. These days she quilts, paints and is a much better cook than earlier! As a fond grandmother, storytelling and writing for children have been a natural progression. ‘The Wallaby in the Garden’ was inspired by the time a wallaby came by with her young joey and snacked on roses and geraniums. The wallaby still visits, but the flowers are now fenced off, so they live amicably together. Illustrator Information Olivia completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School. Her style is influenced by the impressionist art movement as well as illustrators Beatrix Potter, A.A. Milne and Ludwig Bemelmans. She is a perpetual daydreamer with a nostalgic love for the past. Growing up, she had a wonderful Cabbage Patch doll, Henrietta, that became more friend than toy, and she believes in the magic of bringing all story tale characters to life in the same way, for all the children who read them.

Trumble and Ludwig are about to embark on an adventure of gigantic proportions! 'Claw in claw' they must set forth in the Tasmanian wilderness to find a mystical magical 'Squorch' seed to help cure their granny of the cursed 'lumpy face'. But it's a real jungle out there and what lies ahead is nothing short of a troublesome and tumultuous ride to remember. Trumble and Ludwig's Forest Adventure is an altruistic and uplifting tale about family and connectedness, laced with humour, subtle life lessons and a celebration of Australian wildlife. Part proceeds from this book will go to the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program who are working tirelessly to secure a future for Tasmanian Devils in the wild. Author Information Jacqui has a background of tertiary study in Fine Art and Zoology Science. Some artistic achievements in her career include holding three solo shows, 'Pacific Girl' 2018, 'The Australian Bush in Abstract' 2015 and 'The Fur Pill' 2010. She has also gained a handful of awards and recognitions including Highly Commended in the Perth Royal Show Art Prize 2015, Finalist in the Albany Art Prize 2014 and winner of under 25s category in the Cossack Annual Art Prize 2002. Jacqui's hobbies include painting in the studio, bush walking, spotlighting for frogs, playing with her dogs and looking after her menagerie of other animals in her home town on the outskirts of Perth, Western Australia. Trumble and Ludwig's Forest Adventures has enabled Jacqui to girdle her passions for both the natural environment and painting, and the driving force (besides a love for painting and writing) was a desire to be more proactive against the plight of some of our vulnerable species! Giving children a fun, light and entertaining education through story, Jacqui hopes to bring about some inspiration and reinforcement of positive attitudes towards our natural environment. Part proceeds from this book are going to the 'Save the Tasmanian Devil Program', based at the University of Hobart.

When Maggie can't decide what to do, she flips a coin ‐ but not all the results come out in Maggie's favour. What will Maggie do when she has a REALLY important decision to make? Can you guess what happens next?
Author Information Tracey Muir is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at University of Tasmania. She is passionate about engaging students in positive mathematical experiences and loves to use picture books and stories to do this. Tracey is also a passionate educator and has received university and national awards for her teaching. She hopes that Heads or Tails will provide all readers, especially teachers and students, with the opportunity to engage in rich mathematical conversations about key probability ideas. Illustrator Information PJ Reece was born and raised in Canberra. He was more into sports than art as a youngster but always liked drawing and creating things at school. As an adult, PJ started to draw and paint a little bit but never studied art formally. He slowly filled up art diaries with sketches and, with practice, eventually began to create professional-looking illustrations. PJ started to get some freelance work, sold greeting cards to a few shops and did some spot illustrations for an educational publisher. An opportunity to illustrate Heads or Tails with Little Steps Publishing came and the lengthy process of illustrating a full-sized children’s book began. Even though he had illustrated with traditional methods previously, PJ decided to illustrate the project digitally. PJ Reece now lives in a coastal village a couple of hours from Canberra. In addition to illustrating, he enjoys listening to music, reading, getting out and about for exercise and spending time with his family.

Join little Saffy as she goes about her sneaky secret mission. She is determined to summon the almighty DRAGON and she will most certainly not let ANYTHING stand in her way!
Author Information Annabel Cutler is an artist, student and the illustrator and author of Saffy and the Sneaky Secret Summoning, which marks her children’s book debut. Annabel is currently studying for a Bachelor of Communications Degree at University of Technology in Sydney and has completed a certificate in Illustration and Drawing at Open Colleges with a high distinction final mark. Her fine art is stocked in galleries throughout NSW and she has participated in a few group exhibitions. Having spent much of her childhood on a property in rural New South Wales, her passion for painting and drawing animals and quirky characters flourished and continue to inspire her today. Saffy’s strange and imaginative escapades were stemmed from Annabel’s own childhood fascination with magic and mythological creatures, dragons in particular. The story is brought to life through a vivacious series of playful, mixed media illustrations that capture Saffy’s quirky and determined spirit in scenes that are vibrant and exciting. When she’s not making a mess in her studio, she loves morning swims on the beach, documentaries and eating too much food with friends. 'Being different is ok! That's what makes us shine.' Meet Fletcher and his friends! They all have different abilities and a special outlook on life. 'A Friend Like Mine' is a special book that explores the upside of being DIFFERENT. Author Information Samantha Warne is a Disability Support Worker and musician from Perth, Western Australia. Samantha has found joy in combining her passion for music, drama and creative writing with her career as a support worker. She loves to empower her clients through the dramatic arts and loves exploring new creative ways to help them thrive as active members of the community. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. In her spare time, Samantha sings in her cover band Eden Fire. She loves playing music, going to the beach, going camping with friends, travelling and eating. In 2017, Samantha was nominated for an award at the WA Disability Support Awards and received runner-up in her category for Excellence in Individual Support. This year, she has been nominated for an award in Excellence in Advocacy and Rights Promotion. A Friend Like Mine was written as a dedication to her client Fletcher Garrett, a young boy who lives with cerebral palsy. One of Samantha and Fletcher's favourite things to do together is read books. While supporting Fletcher, Samantha noticed that individuals with disabilities are underrepresented in children's literature. A Friend Like Mine is ripe with characters living with disabilities. These disabilities are all implied, as Samantha chooses to focus on the strengths of the characters as a reminder to the reader that a disability should never define all a person is. Samantha felt that her book could help raise awareness and act as a tool to facilitate dialogues about social inclusivity and celebrating the strengths of those living with a disability. She hopes that this book empowers Fletcher (and others like him) to see his voice deserves to be heard. You can find Samantha on her Facebook page Samantha J Warne, as well as her band's page Eden Fire. Illustrator Information Matt Howorth is a freelance British illustrator living in the north of England, specialising in character design for animation and children’s illustration. He graduated in 2015 with a First-Class Honours Degree in Illustration and Graphic Design. He has worked on multiple animation projects, including movies and cartoon TV shows. He first fell in love with drawing after watching The Little Mermaid at his grandma’s house. He spent much of his childhood covering the living room floor in crayon drawings of mermaids and sea creatures. Matt’s work has a focus on colour and shape, he likes to create designs that inspire a feeling of innocence and childhood playfulness. He isn’t precious about his linework, and usually likes imperfections in his drawing as it adds a hand-drawn quality to his digital pieces. Along with drawing and creating, he likes marine biology, period dramas, and petting the neighbourhood cats. You can see his artwork on his website www.matthoworth.com and @matthoworth on Instagram. 'My mummy is a scientist... but I'm afraid she might be mad.' My mummy has a really cool job. She's a scientist and does all kinds of amazing experiments! But scientists in all the stories I read and watch are mad... does that mean my mummy is mad too? Author Information Since migrating from the concrete squeeze of Hong Kong to idyllic Perth as a ten-year-old, Rina has grown into a colourful composite of scientist, singer-songwriter, and author-illustrator. After a first-class Honours dissertation on a yoghurt bacteria essay, Rina pursued a medical science career firstly in a pathology lab and then as a graduate student. Her doctorate on malaria drug resistance (as Rina P. M. Wong) included various field trips to PNG, and earned her the prestigious JFA-Sprent Medal from the Australian Society of Parasitology. After a break to start a family, Rina returned to earn accolades as a teaching academic for her innovations as an instructor - testament to her enthusiastic and engaging style of science communication. Audiences regularly find themselves enthralled by Rina’s musical talents as she seeks to inspire and ‘edutain’, be they little ones, undergraduates, or grownups. Rina currently balances the thrills of teaching with the spills of mothering two young children, all the while cultivating her inner artist and veggie patch in sun-soaked Perth. Beginning with her first picture storybook My Mad Scientist Mummy, Rina hopes to use any medium to bring the fascinating world of the microscopic into the imaginations of children and adults everywhere. You can visit her website www.rinafu.com for more information.

Author Information Jacqueline is an Australian author who adores exploring all the world has to offer! Her love of travel started at age three when moving from Sri Lanka to Australia with her parents. Having family sprinkled around the world, she has lived, worked and been on many adventures overseas. Her infatuation with the vibrancy found in each culture led her to complete a degree in the social sciences, undertake a Masters in International Development and work in international affairs. She currently resides in Canberra with her Irish South African husband (who she met on an escapade in America), her three year old daughter and beagle puppy. Her appreciation of travel and uniqueness of culture has inspired her first book. Charlie’s Adventures in Hawaii is her first book. She hopes that Charlie’s Adventures will encourage children to learn more about the world, and journey far and wide in discovering, appreciating and understanding. Sophie’s artistic talents were soon discovered by New Frontier Publishing, as a work experience student there. She has written and illustrated her own book, Lisa Absolutely Loves Art, and her illustrated work for Yellow Dress Day put her on the shortlist for the 2013 CBCA Crichton Award. Her other illustrated works include Matilda Saves Santa Claus, Emilia Mouse, Elephant Kitten and Where Do Teachers Go at Night?. Sophie enjoys playing across styles and mediums of illustration.

Join Flossie the fairy on an exciting adventure! Flossie the fairy is enjoying a lovely afternoon visiting her friend when they discover a lost girl in the woods. Eager to help, they soon find that she's not lost at all - she's been entranced by Elvira the evil fairy! Can brave Flossie save the day? Author Information Nancy Watson was raised on the land in the Yass and Young districts of NSW, her father being a grazier of wool and wheat. In Young, she was school captain in 1959, and then worked in the banking industry until she married in 1965. Raised with a love of music, she played piano for a number of years and loved singing in local musicals in her early life. After raising two children, she re-entered the workforce and worked for a coal mining company in the Lake Macquarie area for 17 years. Her interest in writing remained constant throughout her early career, but did not take off until she had a travel article published in 2013. Then an unexpected inspiration to write about Flossie the Fairy… perhaps influenced by the memory of a little moss fairy garden she had as a child. In the past 30 years, Nancy has lived on the western edge of Lake Macquarie; the many moods of the lake never disappoint. Grace Chen is a young illustrator and student residing in Sydney. Her days are spent working at If U Like ART studio in Brookvale, studying Media Arts at UNSW Art and Design, and spending time with her friends. She favours using colourful mediums such as acrylics, watercolours, digital media and colour pencils, to create soft, yet lively illustrations. She hopes to continue improving her art, and own a cat or two in the future.

Sound Stories: Anna Ant's Antics is the third in a series of four books to help children learn phonemic awareness. Through stunningly detailed illustrations from Sarah Hardy, and clever and engaging stories from teacher and wordsmith, Barbara Murray, children will have a joyful introduction to phonemic awareness and synthetic phonics. Author Information Barbara Murray was a primary school teacher for many years before she began writing Sound Waves, a Whole School Phonemic Approach to Reading and Spelling in 2000. The program is now widely used across Australia and in some schools overseas. Teaching was her passion, and a phonemic approach featured daily in all her classes across the whole primary school. She loved developing a curiosity about language in her students. Today, the third edition of Sound Waves includes an amazing, interactive website set up by her publisher, Firefly Education, that provides schools with a huge range of games, activities, teaching ideas and support, as well as the original student activity books and teacher resource books. A phonemic approach to literacy is based on the 43 sounds we use in Australian spoken English. The very first step is to introduce the 43 sounds to beginning readers and writers. Barbara is now publishing 43 stories illustrated by Sarah Hardy and compiled by Little Steps, for teachers and parents to introduce the 43 sounds to young children. These stories will be spread across a set of four beautifully illustrated books, Sound Stories.

Author Information
Bianca. C. Ross is a writer, a small-time farmer and a friend of Herbert Peabody. One day when she was sitting in the garden at her farm, which is very much like Herbert Peabody’s farm, she had an idea. She decided she would write about her friend Herbert Peabody, the farmer who is helping kids to: Grow, Cook & Love Food! She’d always enjoyed being read to when she was little, especially books with pictures. And she’d grown up in a house that had a big vegetable patch in the backyard. It was the tomato her dad had picked straight from the vine and handed to her that made such a strong impression. Confused, she’d asked him how she should eat it, and she was sceptical when her dad had told her to chomp straight into it. But she did, and the sweetness of that homegrown tomato had her hooked at first bite. Bianca and Herbie are committed to helping children connect with where food comes from in a fun and inspiring way. They have appeared on ABC TV and Radio, and been featured in The Age, The Daily Telegraph, Disney Princess Magazine and news.com.au Bianca and Herbie have held planting sessions at Westfield Shopping Towns and school lunchbox workshops at local gourmet markets. They also visit schools for readings and activities to help spread the magic of growing, cooking and loving food. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

A fascinating investigation into a very strange episode of scientific history. P.W. Barber tells the story of the invention, practice and downfall of psychedelic psychiatry, revealing how it shaped twentieth century understanding of mental health.
Back to Black traces the long and eminent history of Black radical politics. Born out of resistance to slavery and colonialism, its rich past encompasses figures such as Marcus Garvey, Angela Davis, the Black Panthers and the Black Lives Matter activists of today. At its core it argues that racism is inexorably embedded in the fabric of society, and that it can never be overcome unless by enacting change outside of this suffocating system. Yet this Black radical tradition has been diluted and moderated over time; wilfully misrepresented and caricatured by others; divested of its legacy, potency, inclusivity and force for global change. Kehinde Andrews explores the true roots of this tradition, and connects the dots to today’s struggles by showing what a renewed politics of Black radicalism might look like in the 21st century.

In 2014, a 28-year old British doctor, found himself running the Ebola isolation unit in Sierra Leone’s largest hospital after the doctor in charge had been killed by the virus. Completely overwhelmed and wrapped in stifling protective suits, he and his colleagues took it in turns to provide basic care to patients whilst removing dead bodies from the ward. Against all odds he battled to keep the hospital open, as the queue of sick and dying patients grew every day. Only a few miles down the road the Irish Ambassador and head of Irish Aid worked relentlessly to rapidly scale up the international response. At a time when entire districts had been quarantined, she travelled around the country to meet with UN agencies, the President and senior ministers so as to be better placed in alerting the wider world to the catastrophe unfolding in front of her.

Taxation has been seen as the domain of charisma-free accountants, lawyers and number crunchers – an unlikely place to encounter big societal questions about democracy, equity or good governance. Yet it is exactly these issues that pervade conversations about taxation among policymakers, tax collectors, civil society activists, journalists and foreign aid donors in Africa today. Tax has become viewed as central to African development. Written by leading international experts, Taxing Africa offers a cutting-edge analysis on all aspects of the continent’s tax regime, displaying the crucial role such arrangements have on attempts to create social justice and push economic advancement. From tax evasion by multinational corporations and African elites to how ordinary people navigate complex webs of ‘informal’ local taxation, the book examines the potential for reform, and how space might be created for enabling locally led strategies.

Standing in Line is a humorous memoir, based on a variety of experiences in The Queue, one of sport’s most fascinating traditions. Told through the eyes of a ten-year-old boy becoming a 39year-old man, it is a love letter both to Wimbledon and to the wonder of British summertime. Watching The Championships is a national pastime, and this book is full of the ups and downs out on court, as well as the memorable pop-cultural moments off it. It is set against the desperate wait for a British Gentlemen’s champion, viewed against the global reality show Wimbledon has become – transcending sport and class, yet still embracing tradition. Illustrated with drawings from renowned artist and author, Zebedee Helm, we observe both the changing world around us and the behaviour of the half-million fans who cram themselves into this leafy corner of London for two weeks every year. Standing in Line is a joyful, gently nostalgic read for anyone who has found themselves gazing for hours on end at coverage of Wimbledon.
At 34 years of age, Gregory Howe quit teaching in London to chase his childhood dream of becoming a world-ranked tennis professional. After initially struggling against younger, fitter aspiring pros in minor leagues across four continents, Gregory made it on to the ATP tour, encountering some of the stars of the modern game.

The Joshua Files traces the story of Britain’s latest heavyweight hero from the building site to the top of the boxing world and beyond. Anthony Joshua’s fight with Wladimir Klitschko, in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, transformed the fighter not only into a national hero but also a global star. Having worked as a boxing journalist for almost 30 years for Boxing News, Boxing Monthly and Sky Sports, Matt Bozeat was perfectly placed to follow Joshua from a ringside seat from the very start of his professional career. Joshua turned pro soon after winning gold at the London Olympics in 2012, and has since surpassed all expectations, going on to dominate the division with a 100 per cent KO record. The Joshua Files tells exactly how he fought his way to the top, through revealing and insightful interviews with the fighter himself, as well as with the boxing experts, trainers, sparring partners and opponents who have the closest insider knowledge of Anthony’s incredible rise.

From the present day back to the bareknuckle era and the 18th-century prize ring, boxing has always had its wacky warriors and masters of menace. All these larger-than-life characters had one thing in common – talent in abundance. Some used it, others wasted it. Many bigdraw fighters were born on the wrong side of the tracks, while others seemingly made a beeline for oblivion. Eight-times married conman Kid McCoy took his own life. The fearless Stanley Ketchel was shot dead by a jealous farm worker. The enigmatic Battling Siki used to parade a lioness down the boulevards of Paris, while the unpredictable Chris Eubank enraged the establishment with his eccentric lifestyle. Mean and moody Sonny Liston died in mysterious circumstances. The brilliant Aaron Pryor fell victim of America’s drug culture. Roberto Duran once knocked over a horse in anger, while beerguzzling Tony Galento threatened to ‘moider da bums’. Here, Thomas Myler brilliantly brings to life all these and many more unforgettable fighters.

Redemption:
Redemption: From Iron Bars to Ironman is the fascinating, frightening and inpirational autobiogaphy of former career ciminal, now world-record holder and endurance athlete John McAvoy. Born into a notorious London crime family, his uncle Micky was one of the key players in the legendary Brinks-Mat gold bullion caper. John bought his first gun at 16 and carved out a lucrative career in armed robbery. At one point he was one of Britain's most-wanted men, and it took two spells in prison and the death of a close friend during a heist to change his path. During his second stint in prison he discovered a miraculous natural talent while serving life on Belmarsh high security wing - where fellow inmates included Abu Hamza, the hook-handed extremist cleric, and the 7/7 bombers. John broke three world rowing records while still in jail, and since his release he has become one of the UK's leading ironman competitors and hopes to turn pro later this year. Ride lays bare the harrowing beginnings and the tough life lessons learned by superstar John Buultjens on his rise to BMX Glory, Against All the Odds. Raised by his poor family on Glasgow's Drumchapel estate, he slept rough to escape his violent father's beatings. Placed in a children's home by his mother, he was then adopted by a bi-racial couple. After conquering his own racism, his life turned around, and the blockbuster movie E.T. inspired a love of BMX. Although spurred by bitterness, John's emigration to Australia saw him take his sporting enthusiasm to new levels, becoming one of BMX's biggest names. Then came the call from California to lead the most famous BMX brand of them all, Haro. As their global brand manager, he now backs and sponsors riders across the globe. Hollywood has since turned his unbelievable journey into a movie, set for release in November 2017. Here, John reveals inner secrets including family murders, hatred, sexual abuse - and how his white-knuckle ride has taken him to the top against all the odds.

The starlings dance in mesmerising patterns. In and out they fold. Up and down. Below them a Victorian pier has stood the test of time, carrying each generation over a cold and relentless sea. As the birds dance they watch the lives of those who pass beneath. Two scandalous comedians born a century apart; a seemingly ageless deckchair attendant; the fortune-teller who believes no one can see the future. And in this seaside town one man knows the only way to stop history repeating itself is to solve a mystery as old as the pier.
