Words From The Wise
Vernacular or not. Over the last year I have been in conversation with people who used the term "the skinny". Being a product of Gardenvale Central and Glen Waverley High School some idiom is out of my grasp. To my knowledge, the first time I heard the term "the skinny" was in conversation with the globally renowned author Jack Dann over a coffee last year: the term stuck in my subconscious. Then last week a new self-publisher / author, Valerie Morton used the phrase again. So I may consider renaming this monthly outpouring as "the skinny" https:// www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2011/01/ skinny-2.html
A similar story occurs with some short run POD depending on the page extent and the actual POD quantity: once we apply our margin in order to trade with you the end selling price becomes untenable.
I also wanted to say some words about Alison Forbes being inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. Alison designed (among many) the book “John Cotton's Birds of the Port Philip district of New South Wales 1843-1848” which was the winner of the book of the year in the APA awards 1974/75. I remember it well as we had the entire print delivered to our offices at 608 St. Kilda Road Melbourne; together with 850 wet slip cases as there was a deadline and our office was the work shop function. Each slipcase had to be dried by the natural sunlight as well as every blow heater we could muster. (My copy is numbered 619 of 850) Unlike much of publishers output today of fine collectables this book was typeset, printed and bound in Melbourne. Alison worked on many of those prestige Collins publications. A good choice by the selectors. I note too that another colleague Patrick Coyle is also a winner of this award.
Then I want to thank the booksellers who have greeted Lisa Messenger warmly on her current tour as well a series of face to face meetings to set the pitch for her new book Risk & Resilience. It will be our best seller over the next six months and in this August list we have given it the centrefold positioning. Watch for Lisa at your shop over the next six months.
Why don't you have that book? Because the financials don't work. One current case is Retrosuburbia where the publishers have decided they will get their print and sunk costs back quicker by them self-distributing. I can't argue against that. I also saw the very attractive Three Decades on Lake House and Daylesford which I assume is available on consignment direct from the publisher; I presume the same with this book. The Penny Woodward co-authored book on Tomatoes is in the same category. It will be a major release of unheralded proportion to do with the 480 tomatoes cultivars, but will not be commercially distributed until it goes into reprint.. Then again if we dropped our discount to you to 20% they would work: can't see anyone putting their hands up at that price.
What has been selling? This time looking at some franchises. The biggest in May was Hey Warrior, followed by the various Secret Girls book and then Weed Foragers Handbook / Art of Frugal Hedonism titles. When we aggregate our May digital results we will also see how across the versions of eBook/POD & stocked that The Secrets of Hanging Rock has zoomed up the lists of books most desired by consumers.
See you at the booksellers conference in June. As I write this the media is splashing the “Geoblocking” performance by Amazon and the consumers who have shopped that way for so long are angry. I have never purchased from Amazon and have been annoyed by other businesses who “Geo-block” – mainly with streaming. I do suspect this has always going to have been the case and is a principal driver for them to set up in Australia. The consumers who are angry at local “gouging” can find other ways to make their purchases – either with or without GST. As for our business, this potentially offers local businesses further reason to have better content and feed equipped customer service. I do know we are still seeing a very strong rise in our online sales versus bookshop sales and that is good for business, or is it! (Whist doing some research I note that Amazon employ more employees that the population of Tasmania.) Best wishes Dennis Jones PS there was an edit gremlin last month and I apologise to Clinton Walker for this.

The inaugural AFL Women's competition was a huge success. Although there were supporters who anticipated its impact, there were many who were surprised by the significance it had. Forty writers have come together to contribute to The Women's Footy Almanac 2017 which is a game by game account of the season which also includes essays about the what the 2017 AFLW season means to people, and why. This entertaining and insightful book is an account of sport in its social context. It is the story of football but also of football's impact on Australian life.

The Game That Never Happened finishes where many other histories of Australian soccer have barely started. It begins in the mid‐nineteenth century and concludes between the two world wars, when the game suffers from a massive and perhaps crippling collapse. Australian soccer's prehistory and early history are vital but forgoteen stories. If we are ever to domesticate what is still seen as a foreign game by many important historiographical, cultural and media narratives, this story needs to be told. The lie is that soccer is the game that never happened in Australia. The lies need to be demolished.
Author Information Ian Syson lectures in literary studies at Victoria University in Melbourne's west. He has researched the histories of Australian football codes for over a decade and has published many scholarly articles and newspaper reviews on Australian soccer.

Alice McKinley inherits Dunedin, the family's crumbling pastoral estate in Victoria's Western District and soon discovers the sprawling sheep station is on the brink of bankruptcy. A posthumous gift from her grandmother, Cecily reveals a Pandora's box of riddles, clues and cryptic correspondence, including a journal written by her ancestor, Florence. Alice is catapulted into a frantic search for something she's not even sure is real ‐ a missing masterpiece, commissioned by her family in the 1870s. It's an heirloom rumoured to be worth millions and would save Dunedin from financial ruin. As Alice delves deeper into the family archives, she uncovers more than she bargained for ‐ a tangled web of intrigue stretching from the giddy world of colonial squattocracy, the wool boom of the 1950s and the realities facing rural families in the new millennium. Can she save her family's great legacy? Time is running out... Filled with tales of hidden love, dark family secrets, and chance encounters, Canvas is a sharply observed and compelling family drama, interwoven across generations and set in the heart of Australia's iconic grazing country...

It's a harsh peril, living on the ledge. Off islands cliffs. Purest of isolation if you can imagine this. Posts along coasts; where men and women and their children grew up and lived. Lighthouse positions taken, the men did and swore oath and backed by law that any, under their guiding light, their helping hand they'd certainly give. But there's more to heroics isn't there, some acts you just can't forget or forgive. For the first time in over fifty years what can be shown is that one island wasn't at all a home. On it was a family that was rightfully frightened. One day their schemed escape was given secret inside guidance and with a man left behind his entire family alighted. The back of him you think they have sighted but no, this man's search for their return onward goes and throws innocence and death to generations, of sorts that grows in shadows. This is a story in the wording voice of two who ought to know, they lived through. And what they'll tell you is the truth, with the hope it's of some use.
Author Information Melissa Pearson grew up in Victoria, Australia. She is Australian born but feels too she is every part, of the world. A long fascination with all peoples and their cultures has shaped her. She finds pure satisfaction in learning about every aspect of existence. An avid pursuant in all manner and matters of knowledge, she self‐educates everyday. She has degrees in Community and Sport Psychology. Has solace amongst nature, concertos and the creative arts. She would list trust, truth, respect, and unassuming as the categories she sees best in herself and others.

Melbourne Books
New York 1978, London 1988, Melbourne 1998. Twenty years on from the disco revolution and a decade after acid house, Melbourne's warehouse party scene was at its peak. Mixing American dance music with English rave culture, Melbourne's raving pioneers created a thriving underground scene that paid homage to both '70s punk and the '80s gay dance party. As the British rave dream soured and Anna Wood's death turned out the lights in Sydney, Melbourne's raves became world famous. Every weekend in 'Techno City', thousands of ravers expressed their freedom through music, ecstasy and dancing the Melbourne shuffle. And yet for the majority of Melburnians during this time, their only contact with this secret subculture was the occasional scare story in the media or an early morning encounter with a brightly dressed raver trying to find her way home. This book hopes to change that. Informed by the author's interviews with over 40 DJs, promoters, artists and partygoers, including many voices that have never before been heard, Techno Shuffle traces rave's evolution from tiny underground clubs to vast waterfront wonderlands sparkling with creativity. We meet the personalities and places that shaped a subculture and we learn how bitter rivalries, the internet and a city on the move ultimately tore the scene apart. Techno Shuffle unfolds against a backdrop of post-war migration, gay and lesbian rights, the AIDS crisis, Australian drinking culture, the Melbourne gangland killings and the global ascendancy of dance music. During these anxious times in our posttruth age, '90s rave teaches us the value of freedom, community and respect. Let the party begin. Author Information Paul Fleckney is a writer, educator and researcher. He teaches urban planning at the University of Melbourne. Paul grew up in England and became fascinated in rave during 1988’s ‘Second Summer of Love’. Too young to experience the acid house explosion firsthand, he read the hysterical headlines in the press and watched the pantomime of moral panic play out on TV. A keen techno music fan, Paul remembers well the bitter disappointment he felt when he first stepped inside a nightclub. He pronounced rave dead, buried beneath a thousand commercial ‘choons’ and a sticky beerstained carpet. But then a conversation with Melbourne DJ Brewster B. In 2013 renewed his interest in rave. As Paul listened to Brewster’s fascinating and outrageous stories, he realised that through writing about rave he could share in a subculture that had not only eluded him for 25 years but also had transformed the lives of thousands of young Melburnians. Historian Charles Bean described the Leanes as 'the most famous family of soldiers in Australian military history', and they were used as a poster family for recruitment in the First World War. But these Aussie diggers were separated by only one generation from humble Cornish farmers, who sought godliness not glory when they sailed to Australia in 1852. When Wendy Frew opened the genealogy cupboard to learn more about her martial ancestors, out fell a bunch of fiery evangelists and women's suffragists who embraced all the opportunities on offer in the new colony of South Australia. Frew places her family at the crosscurrents of history ‐ mass migration, colonisation and war ‐ and reveals a complex true story that will resonate with the descendants of Australia's early free settlers. 'Leane Times' is a vivid account of personal courage, triumph and tragedy.
Author Information Wendy Frew is an award‐winning journalist with 30 years' experience with major media outlets. She has interviewed captains of industry and the media, pulled back the veil on corrupt developments in New South Wales, and taken a look at the seedier side of the art‐auction market. She has worked in Australia and overseas for a number of media organisations including Fairfax Media, Reuters and the BBC. Wendy has long been fascinated by Australian history and most recently channelled that passion into the search for her Cornish ancestry. 'Leane Times' is her first book.

AVAILABLE NOW A collection of poems redacted from letters written by Victorian soldiers during WWI. These poems were researched and written under a State Library of Victoria Creative Fellowship (2016‐17). The collection is a kind of literary mosaic of individual experiences on the way to, from, or at the Front, with correspondents ranging from the Officer, Chaplain and Flying Ace to the humble (and often semi‐literate) Private, Gunner and Sapper. Each poem is titled for its particular soldier and is based on one or more missives penned by that individual. Albiston's last two collections (Jack & Mollie (& Her) [UQP: 2016] and Euclid's dog [Gloria SMH: 2017]) have been chosen by Geoff Page (poet and critic) in his Books of the Year list for Australian Book Review. He will write a back‐ cover comment.
Author Information Dr Jordie Albiston is one of Australia’s premiere contemporary poets. She has published ten poetry collections and a handbook on poetic form. Albiston possesses an ongoing pre‐occupation with mathematical constructs and constraints, and the possibilities offered in terms of poetic structure. Her work has won many awards, including the Mary Gilmore Award and the 2010 NSW Premier's Prize. She lives in Melbourne.

Its theme is simple: a tale of Miss Susan Brady, a woman with ideas above her station, who is spurned, and whose jealousy corrodes her life and drives her to try and sabotage the happiness of John Iredale, the prosperous South Australian grazier who has broken her heart... Classy stuff, this ‐ the fruit of delighted observation, of a sensuous and irrepressible joie de vivre. You cannot fake this quality, it is remarkable... there lingers in one's mind the rare and special pleasure of the sense‐texture which Wenz has created a poignant gift from a Frenchman to Australia, his adopted country. ‐ Helen Garner, from her Foreword.
Author Information Paul Wenz (1869‐1939) arrived in Australia in 1892 and worked as a grazier in the Forbes district at 'Nanima' from 1898, where he wrote several popular novels and many short stories of Australian bush life that were published in Paris. Close friends with Miles Franklin, Andre Gide and Jack London, this first English translation of a classic French novel was translated by Maurice Blackman.

In the 1950s, Eaglehawk boys had fun. I wanted to get out of the house and play with them like a boy. This meant taking risks: playing on the old mine poppet heads, climbing rooftops and roaming around on my bike. I was aware of the danger of 'men'. As the doctor's daughter I was observed, but that didn't bother me. Nor did I let attendance at a private girls' school and the local church rein me in. My imagination was fired by reading about adventures by competent children. The hot, dry Eaglehawk summers made me long for the pool, and I swam wherever I could. My 'free range' experiences involved a precarious balance between freedom and security.
Author Information Liz Low was born into the post War years. She grew up in the household of the local GP in Eaglehawk, a small, poor, dry, ex‐goldmining town outside Bendigo in central Victoria. She was educated at Girton Girls Grammar School and The University of Melbourne where she earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education. She taught English and Geography in Secondary State schools. On early retirement, she took a Fine Arts (Ceramics) degree at RMIT, leading to a second career as a ceramic artist. On retirement from ceramics, she finally had room in her head to write. Liz has 3 adult children and lives with her husband, Nick, in Port Melbourne.

This is the most comprehensive survey ever published of desert plants and plant use. Pitjantjatjara, Warlpiri, Arrernte, Pintupi and many other Central Australian Aboriginal peoples have shared their knowledge with lifelong Centralian Peter Latz to produce this lively and accessible book. The revised edition contains over 200 genera changes ‐ all validated by the NT Botanist Peter Jobson.
Author Information Peter Latz was born in Alice Springs and raised in the Aboriginal community of Hermannsburg, 120 kilometres west of the Alice. His earliest memories are of forays for bushtucker with his young Arrernte friends. It was these trips that formed the basis of a lifelong interest in plants, and the subsequent research for Bushfires & Bushtucker. He has worked in a variety of occupations and is an accomplished photographer. Peter Latz has recently retired as a Senior Botanist at the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory, Alice Springs.

AVAILABLE NOW The discovery of the body of Beth Barnard in her Phillip Island farmhouse in 1986, began a homicide investigation that rocked a peaceful community. It also created an enduring mystery, for no one was ever brought to trial for her brutal death, and the main suspect disappeared ‐ never to be seen again. Beth Barnard, a popular and attractive 23‐year‐old, had been having an affair with a local married man. On the night of her brutal murder, a car belonging to Vivienne Cameron ‐ wife of Beth's lover ‐ was found abandoned near the bridge that connects the famous tourist island to the mainland. No trace of Vivienne was ever found, and her disappearance has never been adequately explained. Nevertheless, a Coroner's Court found that Vivienne had killed her rival then jumped to her death into the waters of Westernport Bay. The case was closed but not forgotten. Ever since their first edition of The Phillip Island Murder, in 1993, Vikki Petraitis and Paul Daley have been regularly contacted by people wanting to know more; people who, like the authors, let the case get under their skin. More than three decades later the mystery, rumours and arm‐chair solutions continue.
Author Information Vikki Petraitis is the author of 13 true crime books, one football biography and has contributed stories to four true crime anthologies. Those books include: The Phillip Island Murder (with Paul Daley); Victims, Crimes and Investigators, The Frankston Murders/Frankston Serial Killer (two editions); Rockspider; Cops ‐ True stories from Australian Police; Forensics ‐ true stories from Australian Police Files; Crime Scene Investigations; Salvation ‐ the true story of Rod Braybon’s fight for justice; Disgraced? The Cop at the Centre of Melbourne's Gangland War; The Dog Squad; and Once a Copper. She is also full‐time secondary school teacher, a member and past convenor of Sisters in Crime Australia, and a teacher of creative writing. She is currently doing a PhD D because spare time is something she creates out of thin air. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

AVAILABLE NOW Twenty‐five years ago, serial killer Paul Denyer terrorised the bayside suburb of Frankston. Twenty‐five years later, the trauma of his seven‐week killing spree still haunts the community. The spate of murders in 1993 touched many more lives than just the three victims. All of Melbourne was gripped with fear, as Frankston and surrounding suburbs were flooded with police hunting the serial killer of three young women. It began on June 11 when Elizabeth Stevens was murdered on her way home from the library. On July 8, Debbie Fream who'd left her 12‐day‐ old baby with a friend while she dashed out for milk, was abducted and killed. Three weeks later, Year 12 student, Natalie Russell, was brutally murdered on her way home from school. When Paul Denyer, an odd young man, was arrested the day after Natalie's body was found, the police and public were shocked by his lack of emotion. Denyer, who was only 21‐years‐old, spoke of the three young women with contempt as he described their final moments. Their deaths had simply fuelled his bloodlust. Eleven years later, just as the public's memory of the Frankston murders began to fade, convicted serial killer, Paul Denyer, made front‐page news with his quest to become a woman.

Vikki Petraitis took to writing true crime because, unlike crime fiction, it was so raw and it told the story of real people, real grief, real loss, real horror. A school teacher by day, Vikki had no idea that writing one book about one unsolved murder would give her a second career that has run alongside her chosen profession for 25 years. She has researched, investigated and written about real Australian crimes, from the well‐known to the obscure; and interviewed countless police, crime scene professionals, victims, survivors and families. She did ride‐alongs with members of Victoria Police so she could learn about their most memorable cases, and found herself right there with them when a serial killer's third victim was found. Vikki spent time with the dog squad learning how the four‐legged police officers are trained to work with their two‐legged partners. And she's become biographer to two well‐known former cops, and to one of the many victims of institutional child abuse. Her career as a true crime writer has resulted in 13 books and counting, with subjects and titles as diverse as The Frankston Serial Killer, Crime Scene Investigations, Forensics, Cops, Once a Copper: Brian 'the Skull' Murphy, and the one that started it all ‐ The Phillip Island Murder. Inside the Law is Vikki's life in crime; a collection of her favourite, personally influential, most memorable stories with a fresh narrative thread of the why, when and how she came to write them. ASIO maintained a vast library of files on half a million citizens, most of whom were never a threat to Australia's security. Through meticulous research, Michael Komesaroff has been able to sift through a multitude of records which were kept on his family, and discover why. This is not only an account of one family's activities, but more broadly, a history of the widespread fear of the presence and influence of communist sympathisers in Australia in the twentieth century. "A well researched and absorbing record of a respected family highlighting its pursuit by ASIO. A great read." ‐ Bernard Rechter (former director of the Monash University Centre for Jewish Civilization).
Author Information A graduate in electrical engineering, Michael Komesaroff has spent a large part of his adult life living and working in Asia on the region's mineral industries. He is also a freelance journalist and has been a frequent contributor to conferences and journals on Asia and its economic development. He was Executive in Residence to the School of International Affairs at Pennsylvania State University in 2010 and a member of the advisory board of the Centre for Asian Business at the University of South Australia. He now lives in Melbourne.

This book collects this largely unseen Australian comic strip in book form for the very first time, and includes some previously unpublished works. An original essay by Neil, talking of his influences and the creation of the strip, rounds out the book. All ages.

AVAILABLE NOW On the roofs of windowless malls and advertising conglomerates, Kent MacCarter is dancing. Shimmy, bebop, pogo, he's climbing billboards to wall-flip up high over the parking lot, its asphalt vistas, naturalising heaps of disposable packaging, target markets heading to their cars under the power grid. He's making a maelstrom up there, sucking it all in-real maraschinos, Donkey Kong, nuclear reactors, fibromyalgia, quietude, cup-a-soups. It's 'draping sparkle on the troposphere'. It's giving the republic of letters its republic back. '& it's a total fucking gas'. - Lisa Gorton
Kent MacCarter is writing like no other poet. His post SF Renaissance and post-language new lyricism are all tussling with an Australian sense of edges. Transcultural and non-national, these poems rip through assumptions and leave us flabbergasted. A generative tension drives word deployment, with words making meaning, developing that 'genuine strangeness' that shifts poetic discourse into something differentiated, generative, essential. In MacCarter's work, the 'ordinary' becomes strange and a lens through which we might re-see our certainties. There's an accentual and cultural slippage grappling with the 'new' in interrogative ways that are beyond satirical-the poet inside and outside what is being critiqued, culpable and also stunned by what is seen. Inside, because he is a participant in the cultural debates and discussions of the modern, and outside because his language is so self-propelling that the poet follows in its wake, watching on. These critiques of commercial fetishisation and gender stereotyping/exploitation are politically and ethically driven challenges to us all, requiring us to question our own modes of reading. This is a riveting workcompulsive, committed and drop-jawed wondrous. - John Kinsella

It is a vital record, sometimes close to hymn, that gifts to the reader openhearted and open‐ended encounters with the specific. ‐ Lucy Dougan In these poems Kevin Brophy offers us the gift of days in which the ordinary is always surprising ‐ where children arrive in the morning at the school gate "walking as if they have walked all night to get here", and the same word is used for the swelling of a corpse and the rising of a loaf. H. P. Lovecraft pioneered a fusion of terror and science fiction themes, and is widely credited as having invented the sub-genre of 'cosmic horror'. While America's New England was the focus and setting for many of Lovecraft's tales, the Southern Hemisphere held a fascination for him. Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica were featured locations in his Mythosian novellas. In tribute to this, presented here is an assortment of the finest Australian dark fiction, bringing you a second volume of Lovecraftian stories of wonder and dread. Featured are new tales by ROBERT HOOD, LEE MURRAY, KIRSTYN McDERMOTT and SILVIA BROWN. Cthulhu Deep Down Under Volume 2 takes us back below the equator, into the bizarre and headlong towards horror. From mistshrouded peaks and canyons of Melanesian islands, through rainforests and scorching deserts of the island continent of Terra Australis, and across the Tasman Sea to the inhospitable hinterlands of New Zealand. Tales of terror by: Kirstyn McDermott, Robert Hood, Lee Murray, Jason Nahrung, Bill Congreve, J Scherpenhuizen, Silvia Brown, T.S.P. Sweeney, Geoff Brown, David Kuraria. Also an introduction by Mythos fiction guru and horror author, Peter Rawlik.

When Gordeff discovers a wall while hiking in the mountains near his village in far northern Russia and sees the terrifying creatures for himself, he realises the stories about King Dhul‐Qarnayn are all true. When he later witnesses the collapse of the Last Great Barrier, he knows it will not be long before the nations of Gog and Magog (Yajouj wa majouj) pour forth to wreak their brutal vengeance on an unsuspecting world. Set in the not‐too‐distant future after a devastating global war, the author Sam Chehade tells in his novel, The Chasm of Hell, of Gordeff's epic journey to warn humanity of the danger it faces. In a society where most forms of technology ‐ including electricity and explosive weaponry ‐ have been banned, Gordeff and his three companions must find a way to cross the continent and collaborate with both the ruling Candlelight Party and the rebel forces that oppose it. Nothing less than the fate of the human race is at stake.

This book will help you dig deep, stay on purpose, back yourself, be true to your ideas, and ensure that if you're thrown to the wolves, you'll have the strength to come out leading the pack. Do you want to unleash your inner entrepreneur? With prompts, exercises and tons of space to brainstorm your creative process, the Daring & Disruptive Playbook (so called, because hopefully it won't feel like work) will guide you through the process of finding your 'why', identifying your purpose and helping you break free of traditional thinking around what a career should look like. Disclaimer: this isn't like any other business planning template you've ever read. Neither will it spoonfeed you the answers. But, by the final page, you'll have created a manifesto of your dream workday, identified the corner of the world you want to change and how you're going to do it.

But, let's be honest, you need the means to make it all happen. In her latest book, she tackles a topic with a stigma - money! What would you do if money was no object, how can anyone find profit in the impossible and - her personal bugbear - when will "gunnas" stop using lack of money as an excuse for not stepping out of their comfort zone and pursuing their purpose?
Do you have big dreams and plans but lack the resources to pursue them? Do you find yourself saying "If only I had the money..."? Are you too embarrassed to ask others for help? This Playbook (so called, because hopefully it won't feel like work) is designed to be read in tandem with Money & Mindfulness: Living in Abundance by Lisa Messenger - an insightful, authentic account of her own money journey and how this serial entrepreneur learned to embrace it for freedom, choice and a platform for good. DO YOU WANT TO BE DELIRIOUSLY, UNAPOLOGETICALLY HAPPY? IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE CALM, CENTRED AND GROUNDED WHILST LIVING IN A BUSY CITY, RUNNING A BUSINESS AND JUGGLING GROWN-UP RESPONSIBILITIES? In her previous book Daring & Disruptive, serial entrepreneur Lisa Messenger, editor-in-chief of The Collective magazine, shared the business lessons she learned after decades of success in multiple industries, including how to identify your true purpose, pinpoint your passions and visualise the work culture you want to exist in. But, Lisa admits that although her world now seems perfect on paper it hasn't always been this way. In Life & Love, she offers insights into the support system, strategies and relationships, which allow her to cope with the emotional rollercoaster of running a profitable, multi-platform start-up. Blending advice from mentors and role models, with lessons that she's learned the hard way, Lisa's personal journey is proof that no mistake is undoable, no relationship is unfixable and no failure is in vain if you have the right attitude and an abundance of gratitude. How can you find your purpose - and pursue it with dogged determination - whilst still making time for your friends, family, health, community and the simple pleasures that ground you? It is possible and this Playbook will help you discover it. Because... there are enough hours in the week for everything that matters. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a creative, a student, a parent, a friend, or all of the above, consider this your canvas - to help you to design a life you love. This visual memoir (there are almost 800 full colour images in the book) of interwoven stories examines the experiences ‐ both great successes and brilliant failures ‐ that have guided and shaped him along the way. It's a book about work. It's a book about love. It's about him, but also about us. Remo is a fearless changemaker. He inspires us with tales of building community, and the empowerment that comes from joyful engagement and persistence. This is a book for dreamers, thinkers and doers. CHRIS ANDERSON, TED CURATOR The only word for this book is generous. A play by play, a tour of one man's journey, a travelogue of what it is to live an interesting life. SETH GODIN, AUTHOR, THE ICARUS DECEPTION There is no one on earth like Remo. A visionary. A lover of life. A champion of possibility and ideas and design. Humor and humanism hand in hand. Bravo Remo's life. MAIRA KALMAN, AUTHOR, ARTIST & DESIGNER
I am amazed there is a book big enough to capture the thinking and ideas at the essence of Remo Giuffre. He bubbles over with fresh insight and understanding - and is loved and treasured everywhere as a result. MARK SCOTT, MANAGING DIRECTOR, ABC This book makes me feel better. It's about ideas, growth, love, business, Bondi, eternity, self-belief and getting away with it. The world needs more Remos. I shall recommend people take one RemoGram a day, for slow but gradual improvement. JILL DUPLEIX, FOOD WRITER

Abdi from Shining ‐ The Story of a Lucky Man talks about his younger years before civil war broke out in Somalia. This story is full of Abdi's infectious humour and his belief that every person has the right to a productive life, most of all anyone can do it! Through his stories in Never Give Up! Abdi manages to share the normalities of life of a refugee child before war, the harrowing experiences of a refugee child during war and the struggles of a refugee child finding their place in the world after war. Persistence, resilience. determination, using humour in the face of adversity are the underlying theme that make Never Give Up! a must for young readers. ‐ Sam Fleming, Assistant Primary School Principal Author Information Abdi’s world fell apart when he was only fifteen and Somalia’s vicious civil war hit Mogadishu. Unable to find his family and effectively an orphan, he fled with some sixty others, and joined another 300 heading to Kenya. On the way, death squads hunted them and they daily faced violence, danger and starvation. After almost three months, they arrived in at refugee camps in Kenya – of the group he’d set out with, only five had survived. All alone in the world and desperate to find his family, Abdi couldn’t stay in Kenya, so he turned around and undertook the dangerous journey back to Mogadishu. But the search was fruitless, and eventually Abdi made his way – alone, with no money in his pockets – to Romania, then to Germany, completely dependent on the kindness of strangers. He was just sixteen years old when he arrived in Melbourne. He had no English, no family or friends, no money, no home. Yet, against the odds, he not only survived, he thrived. Abdi went on to complete secondary education and later university. He became a youth worker, was acknowledged with the 2007 Victorian Refugee Recognition Award and was featured in the SBS second series of Go Back to Where You Came From. Despite what he has gone through, Abdi is a most inspiring man, who is constantly thankful for his life and what he has. Everything he has endured and achieved is testament to his quiet strength and courage, his resilience and most of all, his warm-hearted, shining and enduring optimism. The Rhodes Must Fall Movement
145
This rich and magisterial work traces Palestine's millennia-old heritage, uncovering cultures and societies of astounding depth and complexity that stretch back to the very beginnings of recorded history. Starting with the earliest references in Egyptian and Assyrian texts, Nur Masalha explores how Palestine and its Palestinian identity have evolved over thousands of years, from the Bronze Age to the present day. Drawing on a rich body of sources and the latest archaeological evidence, Masalha shows how Palestine’s multicultural past has been distorted and mythologised by Biblical lore and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In the process, Masalha reveals that the concept of Palestine, contrary to accepted belief, is not a modern invention or one constructed in opposition to Israel, but rooted firmly in ancient past. Palestine represents the authoritative account of the country's history.

hen students at Oxford University called for a statue of Cecil Rhodes to be removed, following similar calls by students in Cape Town, the significance of these protests was felt across continents. This was not simply about tearing down an outward symbol of British imperialism – a monument glorifying a colonial conqueror – but about confronting the toxic inheritance of the past, and challenging the continued underrepresentation of people of colour at universities. And it went to the very heart of the pernicious influence of colonialism in education today. Written by key members of the movement in Oxford, Rhodes Must Fall is the story of that campaign. Showing the crucial importance of both intersectionality and solidarity with sister movements in South Africa and beyond, this book shows what it means to boldly challenge the racism rooted deeply at the very heart of empire.

'An admirably clear and calm survey of one of the hardest countries in the world to report on.' - The Guardian North Korea continues to make headlines, arousing curiosity and fear in equal measure. The world’s most secretive nuclear power, it still has Gulag-style prison camps, allows no access to the Internet and bans its people from talking to foreigners without official approval. In this remarkable and eye-opening book, internationally best-selling author Paul French examines in forensic detail the history and politics of North Korea, Pyongyang’s complex relations with South Korea, Japan, China and America, and the implications of Kim Jong-un’s increasingly belligerent leadership following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. As an already unstable North Korea grows ever more unpredictable, antagonizing enemies and allies alike, North Korea: State of Paranoia delivers a provocative and frightening account of a potentially explosive nuclear tripwire.
In this remarkable and provocative book, Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister of Greece, explodes the myth that financialisation, ineffectual regulation of banks, greed and globalisation were the root causes of both the Eurozone crisis and the global economic crisis. Rather, they are symptoms of a much deeper malaise which can be traced all the way back to the Great Crash of 1929, then on through to the 1970s: the time when a Global Minotaur was born. Today's deepening crisis in Europe is just one of the inevitable symptoms of the weakening Minotaur; of a global system which is now as unsustainable as it is imbalanced. Going beyond this, Varoufakis reveals how we might reintroduce a modicum of reason into what has become a perniciously irrational economic order. An essential account of the socio-economic events and hidden histories that have shaped the world as we now know it.

The definitive history of Manchester United's rise from being an 'ordinary' side in the 30s to a force in post-war English football. Discover the story of Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy and the birth of the 'Babes' - the players, the games, the Building of the Dynasty. Having had the foresight to appoint an untried manager in Busby, the former Manchester City star overcame the challenge of having no home ground and cobbled together a United side to win the league and FA Cup.
160
A Pugilistic History is not a traditional biography of Lennox Lewis, but instead offers expert insight into every one of his 44 professional contests. Lewis's journey to acclaim as world heavyweight champion was itself never straightforward, as reflected in chapters on events outside the ring in the life of the self-styled 'Pugilistic Specialist'.
A lack of financial power saw the club embark on a youth development scheme under Murphy. Crowned First Division champions again in 1956, Busby took his youngsters to compete against the great sides in the fledgling European Cup; but it was a determination that was to prove fatal in Munich in 1958, on the homeward journey from a quarter-final tie in Belgrade. The unfulfilled dream had become a nightmare.
