SEPTEMBER 2018
Words from the Wise
September 2018 I am at 31,003 feet and on my way across the Pacific on annual leave. I also know I have left behind a strong group of co-workers struggling with issues that are really beyond my ken. In case you have not heard we have been stricken by the Dharma Crypto virus for a couple of weeks, and as I know it today we are still subsumed by it. My colleagues have strategic plans in place to get us back online, however this is a big one in terms of cost and downstream effects. Costs cannot be measured until we get over the devastation effect it has wrought. Historically I had written to our local member maybe 24 months ago about the problems associated with malware and ransom viruses: however they are the Government and basically you are told to play in the traffic. I had the time to speak to Peter Strong from COSBOA recently and does he have a plate full for us small business owners. I am going to refresh him on our recent experiences and ask if anyone in Canberra has this on their radar. Big end of town is either well organised or just because of dimension of business can escape these issues. The ABA was worthwhile for us although the crowds do head for the majors. We (Joscelyn Kevan, David Tenenbaum from Melbourne Books and DJ) on our exquisite double booth had a very strong showing of interest from the booksellers. I have to be frank and wonder about the long term value in pitching in for these events. For the ABA & LE shows our costs are about $20,000 (we put sponsorship money into these events) and we actually write no business at them. Most SME book businesses don't exhibit, even the government funded ones don’t bother. As an industry we have managed to slim down to the following conferences; Online conferences (plenty of these), Dymocks, Collins, Leading Edge Books and Entertainment, ABC, ABA. Probably more. It goes back to my reasoning as to how many car rental businesses you need on King Island. If sanity prevails we should merge some of the conferences and toss the mantra to one side.

Books Lots of great meetings and some valuable content to come and some of them will disappear. For the past three months we have been consorting with Gary (Tex) Houston about his book “The Other Simpson’’. I have seen the photographic library and it is of meritorious status. We sent him to have all the scans done impeccably, however on a 2000 copy print we would have to retail at $100! So back to the challenge table to have it for Anzac Day 2019. The task is to now put together a publishing team to enable a retail price of $69.99 - can we do it? After the ABA I drove to Goulburn for a meeting / catch up with Peter Whitfield from New Frontier. We are very pleased to have been appointed distributors of “Catch a Star” and its inaugural series “The Day Henry met ....”. We will have four new titles between October and November. Hugely popular via ABC TV and Nick Junior. On Sunday we went to Oinofilia and caught up with Kathy Tsaples and her Sweet Greek food offering impeccable! The books were on show as well. Great occasion and lots of wine tasting later. Lucky fella. https://oinofilia.wine/ In closing I wanted to note the passing of two people; first Jean Wilder - Jean was the wife of my first Managing Director Ken Wilder and they were married for 70 years. All those years ago when the parties were held at the Wilders’ home in Balmoral are firmly in my memory. Also someone I had never been previously made aware of; Diana Hanbury King - she spent almost 70 years in the field of dyslexia and her “”Diana Hanbury King Academy” recently opened in Australia. There is a good obituary on her in the New York Times. Have a good month and best wishes! DJ

Daddy Who? is the story of a phenomenon, a band that in eighteen short months changed the course of Australian rock history. Author and musician Craig Horne was with Daddy Cool every inch of the way. With an insider's view, he tracks the journey from when they burst onto the scene in October 1970, with their infectious doo-wop mayhem, and follows their rapid rise to the top-when they were on the front cover of every newspaper and rock magazine in the country, and when radio churned out hits like 'Eagle Rock', 'Come Back Again' and 'Hi Honey Ho!' virtually nonstop. The book reveals the madness of Daddy Cool's three US tours, from their showcase performance at LA's Whisky A Go Go, to New York's famed Madison Square Garden, and supporting the likes of Alvin Bishop, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Little Feat and Captain Beefheart. Daddy Who? is the first book to tell the complete story of the enduring legacy of one of the most unique and much loved bands Australia has ever produced. 'Daddy Cool are the most impressive band I've ever heard... And 'Eagle Rock' is one of my favourite tracks of all time.'- Sir Elton John
Most general histories of post‐war Australian popular music tell the story of a sound, whether pub rock, the inner‐city sound of indy rock, or whatever. This book uniquely tells the story of the songs and the songwriting, filling an egregious gap in the bibliography. Drawing on the author's forty years' experience writing about Australian music and on many previously‐unpublished interviews from his archive, it takes a roughly narrative shape, working along with the chronology as the tradition develops through time, and it concludes with the great coming of age of the early 70s just before the birth of Countdown (and not extending beyond that time because the post‐Countdown era has been so well documented).
Brod is renowned for his work with The Dingoes, Carson, Adderley Smith Blues Band, Broderick Smith's Big Combo and more. Brod has also appeared on TV with roles on Blue Heelers, The McGregor Saga and State Coroner.

Martin Flanagan, journalist at the Age, has often written of the great Wonders of Australian Sport, his love of the AFL, of the importance of Aboriginal players in the highest echelons of Australian sport. A few years ago he threw himself at the mysterious and distressed figure of Tom Wills - our early Colonial cricket celebrity, who put together the Aboriginal Cricket Team set for Great Britain in 1868 - and helped write the original Code for Australian Rules. A hero for several original clubs - Melbourne, Collingwood and Richmond for example. Yet things fall apart, as things have often done for our sporting stars... So Flanagan went deeper: "I dared myself to actually picture Tom Wills in the various situations I knew him to have been in during his life and backed my fancy. It was like entering a creative delirium. Pictures appeared before me which I wrote down in scenes. If I do the same thing in ten years' time, I may come up with a different story but I doubt that will happen. I doubt the energy that accompanied the writing of this treatment will ever return."

James Moody of the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion found an Egyptian dog in 1940, who became Horrie, the Battalion's mascot. He wrote it first as a simple tale, augmented by his own photographs of Horrie and his mates in action in Greece, Crete and Palestine. This was sent to Ion Idriess, who developed the book with a series of questions, to finally develop the classic tale of man's best friend: Horrie the Wog Dog (ETT Imprint 2017). Published here for the first time is Moody's original tale, and extended.response to Idriess' questions, which gives a much stronger picture of members of the Battalion itself, the Rebels, written and lived in than Australian larrikin manner. Introduced by Tom Thompson, it also includes many pictures of Horrie in action, never before published.

Like breaking waves lapping the shore, sweeping away grains of sand and fragments of shell, Ocean Hearts is both tender and devastating. N Dumindi uses words as a painter uses colour. Her book of prose quivers with passion, pain and sweetness, and claws its way into the softness of your heart. This is a rare book of beauty and strength. Let yourself be washed over by its words and emerge renewed and inspired and in awe of what it is to be a human being.

Darwin, the unique and vibrant city in Australia's tropical north, was almost stillborn. The Northern Territory had its beginnings under the governance of South Australia. Land was sold to investors, unseen and unsurveyed and in an unknown location. The sales raised the funds needed to found the new colony of Palmerston, the future capital of the Northern Territory of South Australia. The First Northern Territory Expedition was sent north to make it a reality. But it failed miserably and the government faced huge losses and insufficient reserves to refund its investors. To mitigate the loss, a new venture was envisaged-The Second Northern Territory Expedition-and there was only one man thought capable of ensuring a successful survey of the north: the Surveyor General, George Woodroffe Goyder. Goyder was an extraordinary man, full of frenetic energy and with a phenomenal work ethic. The survey took him and his expert teams of surveyors and bushmen only eight months. It resulted in the laying out of the city of Palmerston (now called Darwin), three rural towns and hundreds of rural blocks spreading over almost 270,000 hectares, all pegged out in the bush and mapped. The blocks were carved out of Larrakia and Wulna lands-without permission or compensation-and conflict with the Aborigines was an ever-present danger. Two men were speared-one fatally. Darwin grew from these somewhat humble but tumultuous beginnings. It was the only pre-Federation Australian capital established late enough to be photographed from its first settlement, and it is a survivor of challenges and privations unheard of in more temperate climes. Darwin's story is written on its maps. Street names such as Knuckey, McLachlan, Daly, Woods, Bennett, Harvey and Smith Streets, recall the surveyors and their teams. Suburbs such as Millner, Larrakeyah, Bellamack and Stuart Park remind us of the city's earliest days. It is the story of how the courage and diligence of a few led to the founding of the city we know today.

This is a true story of greed, courage, exploration, murder, wasted efforts, life and death struggles, insubordination, incredible seamanship, and extraordinary bushmanship, amid government bungling and Aboriginal resistance, during South Australia's first attempt at colonising their Northern Territory in 1864. The South Australians wanted their state to be the premier state of Australia. The new settlement was expected to open up a trading route across the country to Asia and beyond, and exploit the agricultural and mining opportunities of the interior. It was to be at no cost to the state, as the land was sold, unseen and unsurveyed, to investors in Adelaide and London, prior to the First Northern Territory Expedition even setting out. The investors were already calculating their returns, but then, as the saying goes, the fight really started...
Fort Dundas was the first outpost of Europeans in Australia's north. It was a British fortification manned by soldiers, marines and convicts, and built by them on remote Melville Island in 1824. It lasted until February, 1829, when it was abandoned and left to the termites. The fort's purpose was twofold. Firstly, it was a physical demonstration of Britain's claim to the New Holland continent as far as longitude 129°E, which excluded the Dutch and the French from starting similar colonies, and it was the first of a series of fortified locations around the coast. Secondly, it was promoted as the start of a British trading post that would become a second Singapore and compete with Batavia. The settlement was named in a ceremony on 21 October 1824, but it was not a success. In its short existence we have tales of great privation, survival, greed, piracy, slavery, murder, kidnapping, scurvy, and battles with the Indigenous inhabitants of the islands, the Tiwi. It was also the site of the first European wedding and the birth of the first European children in northern Australia.

Sharing more than 50 stories from around the world, Mike draws on his diverse international sales career to teach and demonstrate the power of storytelling from first hello to signed contract. You’ll learn stories to help you: • establish rapport and trust • share your company values • present challenging insights • unstick negotiation stand-offs • and create better business. • differentiate your solution This book will change the way you think about selling. Rather than seeing your role as that of a transactional deal closer, you’ll become a story master, creating new stories for your clients.
A Deeper Truth explains why 9 out of 10 new products fail, the neuroscience behind human choice, and how disruptive successes leverage the fundamental nature of human decision-making. Backed by research across a dozen disciplines, A Deeper Truth explains how genetics and neurology impact perception, behavior, and choice. It also succeeds in providing a comprehensive explanation for disruption even in the arenas where Clayton Christensen himself acknowledges Disruption Theory fails. Filled with stories and anecdotes, this book succeeds at being entertaining while defining the neurological, social, and evolutionary forces that influence our choices to adopt or reject new things. From products to social norms, these forces are reduced to rules that can be readily applied to de-risk innovation, predict how groups will respond, and ensure the success of your next change initiative, new product, startup, or innovation.

Be Beyond Borders
We know how to make Australia a better place, and it's not that hard. Once, Australia was a world leader, resilient, bold, socially progressive. We set about giving everyone a fair go - the vote for women, a living wage, support for battlers. Governments worked for us, built things and made our lives better. Then we dropped the ball. We thought like colonials. We cringed. Lately we have descended to farce. Our politics is corrupt and broken. We are divided and fearful. Our economy stumbles along, hollowed out and enriching the rich. Governments abdicate their job and attack the battlers. None of this has to be. We know how to live well without squabbling and without ruining the land and the planet. But don't look to the political mainstream for the answers. "This is an immensely positive book... a potential ignition point for the revolution we must have if our descendants are to survive the twenty first century" Emeritus Prof Bob Douglas, AO

Grave Tales: Bruce Highway visits cemeteries and features people who willingly or unwilling, were participants in events that made local and national headlines. Stories like how two nurses in Maryborough in 1905 who gave their lives to save a town from an outbreak of pneumonic plague; the migrant who created his dream and shared it with generations; the mother and her five children who lost their lives in the Mackay cyclone; how gold fever changed life in the north; and the 13 RAAF members who came to rest permanently in Townsville, to name but a few.

Grave Tales: Sydney Vol.1 visits Sydney cemeteries to feature people who willingly or unwillingly were participants in events that made local and national headlines. They may have lived in the same suburbs, streets, and even the same houses as exist now, or unexpectantly came to rest in Sydney. In this third volume in the 'Grave Tales' series, we meet Juanita Nielsen who 40 years ago fought to save areas for working class locals and lost her life as a result; thespian Maggie Oliver ‐ a much‐loved stage performer and victim of domestic abuse in the 1860s; Henry O’Farrell ‐ our first would‐ be assassin ‐ he tried to kill Queen Victoria’s son but failed; Arthur Stace ‐ Mr Eternity; Eliza Emily Donnithorne ‐ was she the role model for Miss Havisham in Dickens’ novel? History colliding with the now; these are just some of the stories featured in the Sydney volume of the 'Grave Tales' series.

In cemeteries throughout Australia, gravestones hint at our history ‐ tales of early settlement, heroes and villains, love lost, mystery, tragedy, health epidemics, scandal and sacrifice. Grave Tales reveals more than the headstone can ever convey by tracing the tumultuous journeys that lead to these final resting places. In Grave Tales: Great Ocean Road Country ‐ Geelong to Port Fairy meet the ladies of the lighthouse who led an isolated life; the unionist shot in an affray; the stage actor whose career ended too soon; the men who sighted the fabled Mahogany ship; the two survivors of a shipwreck that everyone wanted to see married, but it wasn't to be; the inventor of the Ute and what inspired his unusual design; and the lady who rests in a 'donated' isolated beach grave. They have come to rest in Geelong, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Cape Otway, Loch Ard Gorge, Warrnambool, Tower Hill or Port Fairy.

In cemeteries throughout Australia, gravestones hint at our history ‐ tales of early settlement, unsolved murders, love lost, mystery, tragedy, health epidemics, scandal and sacrifice. Grave Tales reveals more than the headstone can ever convey by tracing the tumultuous journeys that lead to these final resting places. Grave Tales Brisbane Vol. 1 visits five Brisbane cemeteries and features people who willingly or unwilling, were participants in events that made local and national headlines. They may have lived in the same suburbs, streets, and even the same houses as exist now, or unexpectantly came to rest in a Brisbane cemetery. Meet the train driver who died on the Samford Range with 14 of his passengers; the working girl who caught the Pearl ferry and perished in the river; the Jack the Ripper suspect who had 20 wives, mostly all at once; the only woman ever hanged in Queensland; a boxer who should have been world champ but was a victim of the race card; a soldier who wanted to die with Harry 'Breaker' Morant; and more.

This is a story of a family saga in an historical setting. It starts with the arrival of white men that came from England and settled on the shores of a new land. The story centres on the Parramatta Region of New South Wales, Australia. Each epoch takes you on a journey through different cultures, customs and people. It unfolds through the years and ends in 1957. In judging history, one can only do it by placing the events in its proper slot of 'time and place'.

David's two teenage sons won't do their homework and don't like the bolognaise sauce he has cooked, his bicycle tyre is flat, the current subject of romantic interest hasn't phoned back and a school pullover has been lost. This is on top of his demanding boss, the nagging apparition of his children's late mother, and a counsellor who wants to challenge his negative emotions. Sometimes, David is too down to bother being depressed. Bloke Raising Boys is a telling look at fatherhood and the difficulties faced in juggling home, family, work and the ghosts in our lives, whilst trying to find our own sense of contentment.
The O'Grady family and their lives spin on for four generations. Each era is portrayed with details of human interest, personal insights as some characters' intimate lives are revealed. 'A generation which ignores history has no past or future.' - Robert Heinlein

Voss takes in every detail as he picks through the crime scene, but this isn't just any crime scene, he knows the victims. The killers have taken their time. Queen's Counsel Luke Peters is covered in hundreds of small incisions. Voss moves behind the second victim and studies her position. There has to be a reason why whoever did this made Estelle witness her husband's torture. The small tattoo on her right shoulder rushes back a memory and he wants to smile. Estelle had insisted he pay for it during the first week of their honeymoon. He pictured her smiling and twisting, almost dancing. Looking back over her shoulder and trying to catch the reflection of it in a shop window. His name and hers joined by a heart. It was the happiest he'd seen her and Estelle had never removed it, a fact that must have galled the high-flying defence lawyer. Voss steps away and allows his smile to show.

Although we want to be happy all the time, even during sleep, we do not know how to do this. If someone were to ask us how to do this, we would have no clear answer. Do you have a clear answer? Some people may say, "I will be happy all the time if I become wealthy, enjoy a good reputation and have the opportunity of a relationship with the person I desire." This is not true. We can see that people who have all these things also experience great unhappiness and many problems. Many wealthy people and those in high positions experience great suffering and many dangers. We see and hear news about such things all the time. In this book, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso addresses questions like: Why do we need to practice Buddha's teachings? Why do I need to be concerned for my future lives? Why do we need permanent liberation from suffering? Buddha's teachings, or Dharma. are the practical method to find the real meaning of human life. Because Dharma is very profound, when we are reading Dharma books we should contemplate their meaning again and again until it touches our heart. This is very important for everyone.

Based on teachings from the Kadampa Buddhist Tradition, Modern Buddhism is a special presentation that communicates the essence of the entire path to liberation and enlightenment in a way that is easy to understand and put into practice. The emphasis throughout is on the practical application of methods for improving our human nature and qualities, and not on a merely intellectual understanding. By developing and maintaining compassion and wisdom in our daily lives, we can gain profound realizations that transform our lives, improve our relationships with others and enable us to look behind appearances to see the way things actually exist. In this way we can solve all our daily problems and accomplish the real meaning of our human life. With compassion and wisdom, like the two wings of a bird, we can quickly reach the enlightened world of a Buddha.

Wild Colonial Boys is the 'bible' on Cold Chisel! The first edition of Wild Colonial Boys, published in 2012 was used as a resource by both Cold Chisel and their management (who dubbed it 'the bible'). The first edition has been out of print for over two years, and with the launch of Jimmy Barnes' new autobiography, and five more years of Chisel activity, it is time to release the totally revised and updated second edition. With new, never before published photos covering their entire career, updates to all chapters from 1975, an extensive new chapter detailing Chisel's career post 2012, this is a must have book for all Cold Chisel fans! This is the most extensive book published on an Australian band. Drum Media's Mike Smith described the book thus: "...text enhanced considerably by interviews with the various members he's undertaken as well as with various managers and former managers, radio DJs and so on. Lawrence has also been given access to the band's business records and diaries. His obvious obsessive

As one of the earliest properties pioneered north of the twenty-sixth parallel in the Roebourne District of the Pilbara, Karratha Station harbours a fascinating history. The 120,000 hectares, with its sixty-five kilometres of coastal boundary, was utopia to the Leslie family - who lived there from 1929-1966 - and the Aboriginal community with whom they shared their lives. Cyclones brought elimination, drought and fire brought devastation, WWII brought deprivation, an atomic explosion nearby brought anxiety. But in a physically challenging climate the joy of rain, music, laughter and working the land they loved brought reward. Adults formed Tish's world, Aboriginal children were her companions, animals her soulmates.

In 1961, and one month following the disappearance of Michael C. Rockefeller off the southern coast of what was then known as Dutch Western New Guinea, Indonesia invaded and annexed the territory and commenced the systematic slaughter of indigenous Papuans, to pave the way for a massive wave of transmigrated Javanese. With the meteoric rise of the new powerhouses, China and India, Indonesianoccupied West Papua's wealth of oil, gas and minerals precipitates an international power-play for control over the vast natural resources. Decades have passed since the twenty-three year old Rockefeller disappeared long presumed dead, when sightings of the heir are widely reported. Demands for West Papuan independence gain momentum and Australia is again drawn into military conflict with the Indonesian Motherland, Ibu Pertiwi.
In Lonely for My Land, Tish Lees captivating narrative brings to life an era and area of the outback prior to industrialisation.

Ever wanted something so badly you'd do anything? Sally and Nat are desperate to play netball, but without breaking every rule in the book, that's never going to happen. Why? Sport is totally banned at Sally's place and Nat comes from a basketball family. When Nat is given Netball Basics, a netball training manual, the girls plan to teach themselves how to play and make the grade six netball team. With surprising allies along the way, mean girls who'll do anything to stop them and parents who should know better, this is one dream that doesn't come easy. "Great read, inspiring for young netballers" - Norma Plummer, Australian Netball Team Coach
Do you love netball? Sally and Nat do. But they hate arch rival school, Highfield Primary. They win everything and now have a star new recruit. You'll never guess who! With the netball season about to start, Highfield thrash Central Park Primary in a practice match. The challenge is on... get better and get even. Sally gets help from her great new book, Playing Netball, but nothing is going right for Nat. Trying to help her best friend, Sally comes up with a plan. It's a total disaster. Central Park and Highfield's next clash is in the last round. Can Sally and Nat learn the most important thing about playing netball before it's too late? Join Sally, Nat, Maddie, Patrick and all your favourite characters, as Central Park strive to reach their goal - making finals. "Awesome book; great story with exciting new skills. Drawing is not just Judd's biggest passion; it's how he escapes when his parents are fighting. In high school, his artistic talents get him praise, but at home they're his means of survival. When he sketches, Judd enters a world of his own, a place where he can follow his dreams - and change the course of his life. Perhaps even find love. Then one day, it happens. Love, exactly like in the movies. But just when his dreams are about to come true, reality catches up with him. Barely settled in her new high school, Kate is pulled into a strange, disorienting world. Inexplicable events are occurring around her and even in her sleep. Soon, her entire reality blends with her dream world. And in that blurry space, she crosses Judd's path and makes an unlikely connection.

The book reads like a recipe, each 'method' using natural resources which need to be nurtured and sustained. Using cooking terms, it's a fun way to look at solutions to 'greening' the planet. Educational information on each page, listed as a 'Helpful Hint', looks directly at the conservation measures which can be implemented i.e. reforestation, wise water usage, ocean management, solar and wind power. Additional info in the back looks at each resource more closely.

A beautifully illustrated story of hope and personal transformation from the life of Buddha that addresses many of the issues confronting both children and adults today. Themes include: How to stop being angry and harmful How to be calm and peaceful How to be loving and kind towards each other.
The story of Buddha's life is timeless and is as relevant today as it was 2,500 years ago when Buddha was alive. It shows how we can learn to maintain a peaceful mind all the time so that we can be happy all the time, and in this way fulfil our own wishes as well as the wishes of all our friends. Few can fail to be inspired by this powerful story. The Buddhism for Children series invites children to make a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement to help them realize their full potential. The purpose is not to convert them to Buddhism but simply to show how everyone, Buddhist or non-Buddhist, can learn something from the teachings of Buddha. These books address the reader in a mature fashion, using the life and teachings of Buddha as a basis for exploring many of the issues and concerns that confront children today. And although these books are written principally for children, anyone who wants a clear explanation of the essence of Buddhism and how it applies to modern living will benefit greatly from reading them.

This book introduces the mind, as distinct from the brain, and invites the reader to explore and develop their mind using scientific methods taught by Buddha. Geshe Kelsang explains how the problems we encounter in life do not exist outside of ourself, but are part of our mind that experiences unpleasant feelings. Learning to control our mind, especially our desire, is the only way to bring all our problems to an end.

We know from our own experience that when our mind is peaceful we are happy all the time, even if our external conditions are poor, but when our mind is not peaceful we are not happy, even if our external conditions are excellent. The method to make our mind peaceful is training in meditation. This book explains a simple breathing meditation suitable for all ages and briefly introduces more advanced forms of meditation.

To the colonized, the term 'research' is conflated with European colonialism; the ways in which academic research has been implicated in the throes of imperialism remains a painful memory. This essential volume explores intersections of imperialism and research - specifically, the ways in which imperialism is embedded in disciplines of knowledge and tradition as 'regimes of truth.' Concepts such as 'discovery' and 'claiming' are discussed and an argument presented that the decolonization of research methods will help to reclaim control over indigenous ways of knowing and being. Now in its eagerly awaited second edition, this bestselling book has been substantially revised, with new case-studies and examples and important additions on new indigenous literature, the role of research in indigenous struggles for social justice, which brings this essential volume urgently up-to-date.

Smuggling has been a way of life in Galicia for millennia. The Romans considered its windswept coast the edge of the world. To the Greeks it was from where Charon ferried souls to the Underworld. Since the Middle Ages, its shoreline has scuppered thousands of pirate ships. But the history of Cape Finisterre is no fiction and by the late twentieth century a new and exotic cargo flooded the cape’s ports and fishing villages. In Snow on the Atlantic, the book the Spanish national court tried to ban, intrepid investigative journalist Nacho Carretero tells the incredible story of how a sleepy, unassuming corner of Spain became the cocaine gateway into Europe, which leads to the exposing of a new generation of criminals, cartels and corrupt statesmen, more efficient and ruthless than any who came before.

In 2016, the world looked on as thousands set up camp within Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to protest the re-routing of the Dakota Access oil pipeline close to the Reservation's northern border. People from many Native American tribes were joined by non-tribal environmentalists, including US army veterans, all of them standing in solidarity with the Lakota. Then, in early 2017, the protest was disbanded using brutal force. And that is when the real struggle began. From the decline of the East coast tribes to the dispossession of the native people along the Missouri basin, from the Battle of Little Bighorn to Wounded Knee, America’s indigenous peoples have been subject to horrendous persecution, land grabs and the steady erosion of their way of life. Frontline journalist Ekberzade Bikem recounts the epic story of this centuries’ old struggle as told to her by the guardians of the oral history of the Great Plains, the grandson of chief Sitting Bull's nephew and many of the other activists pledged to continue the fight in the aftermath of Standing Rock.
For the last three decades, Uganda has been one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Globally praised as an ‘African success story’ and heavily backed by international financial institutions, development agencies and bilateral donors, the country has become an exemplar of economic and political reform for those who espouse a neoliberal model of development. The neoliberal policies and the resulting restructuring of the country have been accompanied by narratives of progress, prosperity, and modernisation and justified in the name of development. Harnessing a wealth of empirical materials, the contributors offer a critical, multi-disciplinary analysis of the unprecedented political, socio-economic, cultural and ecological transformations brought about by neoliberal capitalist restructuring since the 1980s. The result is the most comprehensive collective study to date of a neoliberal market society in contemporary Africa, offering crucial insights for other countries in the Global South.

In 1967 Patience Bickersleigh is a teenager who discovers a talent for telling people what they want to hear. Fifty years later she is Patrice Leigh, a nationally celebrated medium. But cracks are forming in the carefully constructed barriers that keep her real history at bay. Leo is the journalist hired to write Patrice’s biography. Struggling to reconcile the demands of his family, his grief for his lost son, and his need to understand his own background, Leo becomes more and more frustrated at Patrice's refusal to open up. Because behind closed doors, Patrice is hiding more than one secret. And it seems that now, her past is finally catching up with her. May thrills in this English familial mystery, adding enticing plot layers as intricate and divisive as the themes she introduces.
When Uma discovers her husband’s infidelity just hours before his untimely death, the carefully woven threads of her life begin to unravel. Struggling to manage the grief of those around her, she escapes to a remote cottage by the coast where she swims in the winter sea, cooks the forgotten Keralan dishes of her childhood and begins the search for her husband’s lover. It isn’t long before Uma realises what she must do to pick up the tattered threads of her life. But will her choices jeopardise the only family she has left? Burn delights in this piece of contemporary fiction, merging the smells of Keralan cooking with the grey environment of rainy Derby, Burn poses the question: what drives us after the death of a loved one?
