Fall 2017 LEISURE GUIDE
Mayor’s Update Well, it’s hard to believe that another great summer hiatus is behind us and we are getting ready for another busy fall season filled with school, recreation and community activities. I hope that you had a chance to enjoy some of the fun events that took place in our community over the summer months, such as the PoCo Grand Prix, our Canada 150 celebrations, Downtown Car Show and ‘Summer in the City’ festivities. I’m excited to share our Fall Leisure Guide featuring a variety of opportunities for you and your family to take part in – from learning a new skill to trying out a new fitness challenge. I encourage you to come out to the annual Terry Fox on September 17 at Hyde Creek Rec Centre to honour the legacy of our hometown hero. Run, walk, wheel, roll or ride up to 10km to support cancer research. We are fortunate to have so many trails and parks that provide a great opportunity to bike or walk, especially while the weather is still nice, to get ready for the run. You can also check out the variety of events planned at Leigh Square Community Arts Village, Terry Fox Library and Heritage Museum over the fall season. There are also spooky activities planned for Halloween at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre and the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex, which remains open during construction of our new vibrant community hub. Our Recreation team continues to offer a great variety of programs to keep you active, engaged and entertained as we get ready for the upcoming holiday season. We encourage you to stay informed on these and many other exciting initiatives taking place in your community by visiting the City’s website at www.portcoquitlam.ca and following us on social media.
Sincerely,
Greg Moore Mayor

ACCESSIBLE RECREATION FOR ALL The City of Port Coquitlam makes every effort to make our programs accessible and inclusive for the whole community. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants and staff, we ask everyone to read the following information.
WE ASK EVERYONE TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION LEISURE BUDDY Participants require additional support for a variety of reasons. Examples include however are not limited to: Autism, ADHD, FASD, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental health issues, behavioural issues, and language barriers. It is important to remember our program leaders are responsible for the entire group and are not able to focus extended periods of time on any one participant. Also it is important to remember that what may be routine for you and your family is not routine for our leaders. Therefore it is important to consider the following when choosing a program for a participant: • Our Children Services day camps are fast paced, active programs with many transitions and can be very noisy at times. • All of our recreation day camps consist of a high percentage of active games, walks and often endure all types of weather when out in the community and can often be in busy public settings. • If you are unsure if a program is the right fit, please contact the Program Supervisor to find out more. • To assist participants who require additional support we offer our LEISURE BUDDY PROGRAM. Our Buddies are trained volunteers, who have trained to help participants stay on task, be involved, make positive social connections and build strong communities. • Our Leisure Buddies do not provide any personal care including changing, toileting, feeding or administering medications.
2
LEISURE BUDDY program: • Participants complete a LEISURE BUDDY REQUEST form – available at all recreation facility front desks. • Access Services requires 2 weeks notice to find an appropriate volunteer. • Participants are matched with a Leisure Buddy on a first come first served basis. • During Summer, Winter and Spring Break programs fill quickly, participants are eligible for 2 weeks of support based on availability and resources. • Support is not guaranteed. If appropriate support cannot be found, the participant will be withdrawn or transferred to a more appropriate program. For more information please contact 604.927.7974 PERSONAL ASSISTANT SUBSIDY The Recreation Department welcomes patrons of all abilities. Should you require assistance to participate our Personal Assistant Subsidy program we allow your assistant or support person into our programs and drop in activities for FREE. Experience It! Please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to register children in the correct level of our swim program. Instructors assess all students on the first day of lessons to ensure that they have been placed correctly. In the event that a child has not been placed correctly, s(he) may be permitted to transfer to an alternate level, based on program availability, at the discretion of the aquatic staff. If no spots are available in an appropriate level, the child may be withdrawn from the program at the discretion of the aquatic staff for safety reasons.
What you should know about Swim Lesson Registration: NOT SURE WHICH LEVEL TO REGISTER IN? If you’re unsure what level your child should be registered in or it has been over a year since their last session, drop by for a FREE evaluation. One of our qualified instructors will assess your child and recommend the appropriate Red Cross level for enrollment. NOT PROGRESSING? If your child has been in the same Red Cross level for 3 lesson sets, within a 6 month period, and has not progressed to the next level, we will provide the child with one private lesson. Alternatively, you may choose to retake the level for the fourth time at 50% the regular cost of the program. We also offer other programs that may be more suited to the needs of the child, including Performance Enhancers, Front Crawl Workshop and Whip Kick Workshop. CANCELLED CLASSES: A minimum of 48 hours before a class starts, lessons may be cancelled where there is insufficient registration. We will attempt to find space in the next available class or issue a full refund. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF REGISTRATIONS: Program participants can only be registered for 1 swimming lesson set at a time. You may register your child for the next lesson set only after the completion of the lesson set they are currently registered in. Your child may be withdrawn from a program(s) if registered in more than one lesson set per session, or if registered in future lesson sets prior to the completion of the lesson they are currently registered in. There is an administration fee of $5 for each individual activity withdrawal. WAITLISTS: If the class you want is full, get on the waitlist! Classes with waitlists may replace any classes that have been cancelled. COMBINED CLASSES: Combined classes are being offered in an effort to provide a greater variety of class time options to families. In order to avoid cancelling a class, we may be required to move your child to another time in order to combine 2 classes with low enrolment. PROGRAM FEES: Program fees cover access to Hyde Creek for participation in Swimming Lessons only on the dates and time listed. Program fees no longer allow participants to use the facility before, or after their lesson. Parents/guardians are welcome to watch their children participate in their lesson; however, program fees do not include parental/guardian use of the facility before during or after their lesson. As space is limited in the pool area during swimming lesson times, all individuals wishing to use the leisure pool, and hot areas may do so for a fee of $2 per visit between the following hours: Mon-Fri 4-7pm; Sat & Sun 9am-12pm

Tidal Wave Aquatics is an exciting and unique program offered by Kidsfirst Physio. While the positive impact of physical exercise in the buoyancy and resistance of water is well documented, we have added an extra plus to our program. Under the personal supervision of Brenda Horton, B.S.R. P.T. (reg), MCPA, carefully trained youth assistants, who work directly with the children in the water offer one-on-one ratio of assistance to each child. Each specifically prescribed pool therapy program is developed and maintained by Brenda, yet presented with the unsurpassable enthusiasm and energy of the youth. The benefits of this combination to those involved in our pool program are unmistakable. The unique socialization atmosphere provided develops a bond that makes the “therapy” even more fun, appealing, and valuable to the children.

This allows you to try out a program to see how your children like it, or gives you time to work out or time for yourself on a day that suits your lifestyle. The cost of a drop-in is higher than the registered cost, as we believe children will get much more from the program if they sign up for the whole session.
How does it work? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Choose the program you want your child to try out. Check availability with our customer service team. Divide the cost of the program by the number of sessions and add $2. This is your drop-in price for the day. Pay at the front desk and then give your receipt to the program instructor. Remember to leave your contact name and number with the instructor for emergencies. Community Art Exhibitions
ARTS & CULTURE
Come visit The Outlet and The Gathering Place at Leigh Square for new exhibitions this season. The Exhibition Program at Leigh Square facilitates community cultural development through the coordination of multi-disciplinary, temporary exhibits created by artists in Port Coquitlam and across Metro Vancouver.
Julia will be creating “old school pottery” similar to forms used in India during her Grandmother and Mother’s youth. This rustic yet functional pottery was replaced by metal dishes, manufactured goods and technology (such as refrigeration) brought on by the industrial era. Seeing such pottery in India in modern times is rare.
A simple IDEA can INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, and produce CHANGE
Exhibitions promote inclusive community access and interaction with exhibitions that cultivate the imagination.
AUG 3 - OCT 3 MOTION BY ZHANNA SHOMAKHOVA
This series of artworks are inspired by the continuous and infinite process of movement in nature. Everything we see, everything that surrounds us, is in constant motion. We cannot influence it, stop it, or change it; it is out of our control. Without a beginning or an end, this process is outside of notions of time and space, it is all around and universal. Random or predictable, orderly or chaotic, the process of motion is an integral part of nature’s beauty.
