OPENING IN AUGUST! Details inside
LEISURE GUIDE FALL 2019
Registration begins July 27 www.portcoquitlam.ca/register
MAYOR’S UPDATE From May Days to the PoCo Grand Prix cycling race, Canada Day and everything in between, it was another eventful and fun summer in Port Coquitlam. And the fall is shaping up to be just as busy and enjoyable! We are excited to present to you the 2019 Fall Leisure Guide. The programs and services in this guide are a reflection of our commitment to promoting and enabling healthy lifestyles and community belonging. In addition to programs and activities in this guide we continue to keep our focus on getting the basics right and the core responsibilities of a city. We’re improving our roads and walkways to make it safer for you to get around and our parks so you have places to enjoy and be active. On that note, we’re excited to be opening our amazing new 205,000-square-foot Community Centre in late August. Two of the three arenas will open in time for the fall ice season, along with the new home of the Terry Fox Library. Next, watch for the new games room, lounge, kitchen, multi-purpose rooms, leisure pool, weight room and fitness studios. Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/pccc for details about the grand opening in late August.
I also ask that as the days get darker, you slow down and watch for pedestrians and children as they make their way to and from school and work. I hope to see you out and about in our wonderful community this fall. For more information flip through this guide or check it out online at www.portcoquitlam.ca/leisureguide.
From the programs and events in the guide to enjoying the crisp fall air on our outdoor trails – there is so much to enjoy and experience in Port Coquitlam!

Leisure Buddy Program OUR COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBLE RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES The Leisure Buddy program provides one-on-one support to help individuals with disabilities participate in City of Port Coquitlam recreation programs. We support those living with physical, cognitive, behavioural, developmental and other challenges. Our goal is to create an inclusive recreation environment.
WHERE TO START: To ensure the best experience for your child, carefully read www.portcoquitlam.ca/leisurebuddy. Application forms are available online and at the front desk of all recreation facilities.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW • Participants are matched with a Leisure Buddy on a firstcome, first-served basis, and access to a Leisure Buddy is not guaranteed. If a Leisure Buddy cannot be found, we will contact you to discuss further options, which may include withdrawal from the program. • To help ensure your child’s success, consider the nature of the program activities. If you aren’t sure if a program is the right fit, contact a program supervisor.
• We are keen to learn the best approaches to help your child be successful. When describing your child’s needs, remember that what is routine for your family may not be so for our staff. • Leisure Buddies support those with one-to-one needs to participate in program activities. They do not provide any personal care, including changing, toileting, feeding or giving medications.
For more information, visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/leisurebuddy or call 604.927.7975.

SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2019 WOMXN: AN EXPLORATION OF HOW WOMXN FIND THEIR WAY IN SOCIETY | JESSICA ANNE NELSON
Jessica Anne Nelson is an award-winning theatre director, creator, and producer in BC, with a BA Honours in Theatre and an MFA in Directing from the University of British Columbia. During her residency, Nelson will be writing and assembling a script focused on ‘what it means to be WOMXN: an exploration of how womxn find their way in society, and discover in life what it means to be a womxn for them.’ This theme of Womxnhood will be explored in two ways. First is an in-depth examination of Nelson’s grandmother’s life growing up in East Vancouver during the 1940s and 50s with only her mother and sister. Second is more expansive, encompassing many stories and perspectives, open to all individuals who identify as a womxn (not limited to cis-gendered ‘women’). Her hope is for the project to be as inclusive as possible, providing space for gender variant individuals to participate, especially those who may have been pushed out of conversations around womxnhood before. Nelson will provide an opportunity for all womxn to speak and share with her how they have learnt to be womxn, as well as some of their formative experiences growing up as womxn.
WORKSHOPS WITH JESSICA ANNE NELSON SITE-SPECIFIC THEATRE CREATION (17YRS+)
INTRODUCTION TO STAGE ACTING (13-18YRS)
37487 Oct 5 & 6, 11am–4pm Site-Specific Theatre Creation is the process of choosing a spot – a site – that speaks a story to the artist, and creating that story for that specific space. It is a form of theatre creation where the found physical space we are in has a chance to whisper to us as creators and inform the kind of story that the specific place wants to be told. Jessica will guide participants through the process of choosing a site and ‘listening’ to the story that wants to be told. Participants will then get the chance to create a story for that specific spot with the help of an outside guiding eye. The process takes participants from conception, to carving out a narrative story line with a plot, theme and message for the story. The workshop ends with a chance for participants to show each other the stories they have created. Participants are encouraged to register with other artists they’d like to work with, or are welcome to register as a solo artist. Please bring water bottle, lunch and snacks.
37488 Oct 26, 10am – 5pm Have you always wanted to step onto the stage and into the spotlight? In this introductory class to acting for theatre and the stage, participants will be shown how to break down a scene or monologue, breathing and body movement exercises, how to warm up, and how to present a story on stage.

INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL THEATRE USING VIEWPOINTS (18YRS+) 37486 Nov 30 & Dec 1, 11am–4pm In this workshop, participants will be introduced to Anne Bogart’s theatre creation technique VIEWPOINTS. This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about how theatre can be created using our bodies rather than just words. Participants will explore each of the 9 Viewpoints of theatre creation and will have the opportunity to create a short theatre scene or performance sequence together. Come prepared to move. Please wear comfortable and flexible clothing, layers, and bring water, lunch and snacks.

OCTOBER 30 – JANUARY 7, 2020 MICHAEL WRIGHT ART GALLERY BACK TO THE LAND: IN CONVERSATION WITH THE LANDSCAPE | DAVID JACOB HARDER
David Jacob Harder is focused primarily on a heightened awareness of the raw nature and the malleability of the natural and social landscape. With a first-hand interaction with materials and illustrated perceptions, he tries to further understand our relationship to the fundamentals of time, erosion, and decay. By amalgamating industrialized and organic materials, he works towards creating a new language to decipher these interactions and symbolize the theories of transcendentalism. By unearthing such theories, equilibrium presents itself in the patterns. Harder’s work is part of a larger conversation about postindustrial culture and our future within the ecological domain. David Jacob Harder is a Canadian interdisciplinary visual artist. Born in Quesnel, British Columbia, he earned a BFA in Visual Arts, as well as BA in Social History, from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. David has shown in numerous public exhibitions across Western Canada and the US and continues to develop his work in his home in Wells, BC.

Children & Adult | Group & Private Lessons | Workshops LESSON REGISTRATION: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW It is the parent’s responsibility to register children in the correct level of swim program. Instructors assess all students on the first day of lessons to ensure they have been placed correctly. Children placed incorrectly may be permitted to transfer, if space is available, at the discretion of staff. If no spots are available at the appropriate level, the child may be withdrawn at the discretion of staff for safety reasons. Not Sure What Level to Register In? Drop by for a FREE evaluation if you’re not sure of your child’s swimming level or if it has been over a year since the last lesson. Child Not Progressing? If your child has not progressed after completing the same level for three lesson sets within 6 months, we will provide one private lesson. Alternatively, you may choose to retake the level a fourth time at half price, or talk to us about other programs that might better meet your child’s needs. 18 | FALL 2019
Cancelled/Combined Classes Lessons with low enrolment may be cancelled a minimum of 48 hours before a class starts. We will attempt to find space in another class or issue a full refund. Alternately, we may combine classes and/or move children to a new class to avoid cancelling a class. Waitlists We encourage you to join the waitlist for full classes, as that may prevent a class from being cancelled (one waitlist per child).
Maximum Number of Registrations Children may only be registered for one lesson set at a time, and may only register for the next set AFTER they complete their current set. Registrations not following these rules may be revoked and a $5 administrative fee charged. What Program Fees Cover Fees only cover participant pool access at their lesson time (not before/after). Parents/guardians may use the pool and hot areas for $2 per visit during lesson-only time: M-F, 4-7pm and Sat-Sun, 9am-noon.

TIDAL WAVE AQUATICS
Tidal Wave Aquatics is an exciting and unique program offered by Kidsfirst Physio. While the positive impact of physical exercise in the buoyancy and resistance of water is well documented, we have added an extra plus to our program. Under the personal supervision of Brenda Horton, B.S.R. P.T. (reg), MCPA, carefully trained youth assistants, who work directly with the children in the water offer one-on-one ratio of assistance to each child. Each specifically prescribed pool therapy program is developed and maintained by Brenda, yet presented with the unsurpassable enthusiasm and energy of the youth. The benefits of this combination to those involved in our pool program are unmistakable. The unique socialization atmosphere provided develops a bond that makes the “therapy” even more fun, appealing, and valuable to the children. Participants must undergo a physical assessment to determine need and appropriate physiotherapy plan prior to approval for the program. For more information or to book an initial assessment visit, contact Kidsfirst Physio at 604.463.7537 info@kidsfirstphysio.ca.
