Bears will return again and again to a known source of food. Residents and businesses on both the north and south sides of Port Coquitlam are urged to lock up their garbage and green carts and other food sources to avoid attracting bears into their neighbourhoods. Sadly, bears who become habituated to human food sources can become aggressive and may have to be killed.

5

4

IN AREA

Zone 1

Don’t be a bear target! • Only put carts on the street from 5:30-7:30 am. • Secure your garbage and green waste.

Zone 2

Protect your family, neighbours and bears LOCK IT UP: Secure your garbage and green carts in a wildlife-resistant enclosure (e.g. garage or shed) or with a wildlife-resistant lock. SET IT OUT: Set out your carts between 5:30 and 7:30 am on collection day, and re-secure them by 7 pm.

What attracts bears to your property Potential food sources include garbage, food scraps and food-soiled papers, unpicked or fallen fruit and berries, beverage containers, barbecue grills, compost piles, pet food, bird feed, diapers, grease barrels, petroleum products and chemical products.

Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/bears for more details. If you see a bear, report it to 1.877.952.7277 (RAPP)

CAUTION

5

Be bear smart Hundreds of bear sightings and encounters take place in Port Coquitlam every year. Bears are increasingly being seen on our streets, in our yards and parks, and in areas of the City they never ventured before – drawn by unsecured garbage and green carts, unpicked or fallen fruit from trees, and carts set out at the curb the night before collection day.

Rivers & Trails Festival: Sept 28 Help celebrate Port Coquitlam’s rivers and trails at events at Lions and Peace Parks. Both feature children’s activities, entertainment, displays and more. Info: www.portcoquitlam.ca/events.

Be Safe on the Roads As the days grow shorter, watch for children along our roadways. If you are walking or cycling, make sure you can be seen by drivers. More road safety tips: www.icbc.com/road-safety.

Staying Safe in the Kitchen The kitchen can be a busy place as kids and parents return to school and work. Never leave hot liquids or food unattended or at the edge of a table or counter where they could be knocked down, turn pot handles to the back of the stove, and always take care when handling hot items. More tips: www.portcoquitlam.ca/fire.

Is Your Child Getting 60 a Day? Children need 60 minutes of physical activity every day to be healthy and focused. The City’s after-school programs are an easy way for children to get the daily activity they need. For details, visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/leisureguide.

The Spirit of the Season Port Coquitlam offers a number of events to help you and your family get into the holiday spirit, including Breakfast with Santa and Skate with Santa. For info, go to www.portcoquitlam.ca/events or call 604.927.PLAY.

Be Safe Over the Holidays Extra precautions are needed over the holidays because of combustible materials such as Christmas trees, ornaments and wrapping paper and heat sources such as lights, extension cords and candles. Tips: www.portcoquitlam.ca/fire.

Extra Holiday Collections In response to resident requests, the City is providing additional waste collection before and during the holidays. Make sure to check the schedule for pickups in your zone, as they may differ from your schedule at other times of the year.

Help Keep our Sidewalks Safe Sidewalks covered in snow and ice are hazardous for all pedestrians – and especially those with mobility issues, such as seniors. It is the responsibility of all property owners and occupants to clear ice and snow from bordering sidewalks within 10 hours of a snowfall. Info: www.portcoquitlam.ca/snow.
