After bears eat once from a garbage cart, backyard fruit tree or even a dog dish, they’ll return to these sources again and again, and teach their cubs to do the same. To help keep bears away, the City will be distributing cart locks this spring to homes in areas with high bear activity for no extra cost. Visit the website below to learn more. Don’t be a bear target:
LOCK IT UP: Secure your garbage and green carts in a wildliferesistant enclosure (e.g. garage or shed) or with a lock. SET IT OUT: Set out your carts between 5:30 and 7:30 am on collection day, and re-secure them by 7 pm.

Extra Holiday Collections In response to resident requests, the City is providing additional waste collection before and during the holidays. Make sure to check the schedule for pickups in your zone, as they may differ from your schedule at other times of the year. Get Into the Spirit of the Season Port Coquitlam offers a number of events to help you and your family get into the holiday spirit, including Breakfast with Santa and Skate with Santa. For more information, go to www.portcoquitlam.ca/calendar or call 604.927.PLAY. Be Safe Over the Holidays Extra precautions are needed over the holidays because of combustible materials such as Christmas trees, ornaments and wrapping paper, and heat sources such as lights, extension cords and candles. For tips, go to: www.portcoquitlam.ca/firesafety. Help Keep our Sidewalks Safe Sidewalks covered in snow and ice are hazardous for all pedestrians – and especially those with mobility issues, such as seniors. It is the responsibility of all property owners and occupants to clear ice and snow from bordering sidewalks within 10 hours of a snowfall. Info: www.portcoquitlam.ca/snow. Winter Break Programs Don’t stay at home over the winter break – join in one of the fun day camps offered by Parks & Recreation! Register online at www.experienceit.ca or call 604.927.PLAY.
