Winter 2017 LEISURE GUIDE
Mayor’s Update Season’s Greetings! It’s hard to believe we’re close to wrapping up 2016, but it gives me great pleasure to know that 2016 has been another great year in Port Coquitlam! We continued to engage our community on a number of important initiatives, such as our housing options review in single-family neighbourhoods - thank you to the over 850 people that responded to our survey! We also had another year of fun events, including two new ones. The inaugural PoCo Grand Prix in July was a huge success and showcased our community to over 5000 people, many visiting us for the first time. Downtown was livened over the summer with the sound of pianos with the Pianos on the Street project. I’m happy to share that the piano has been moved to the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex for people to continue to enjoy. We were also thrilled to have Nicola Avenue completed this year as it was a priority for Council and has been a long time coming. This new road will benefit the entire community and improve access for everyone who shops, works, lives and does business in Dominion Triangle. We still have lots of fun planned and hope that you will be able to join us for ‘Christmas in Leigh Square’ on Saturday, December 3rd -- a fun-filled family day that will kick start the holiday season when we light up City Hall. We’re also looking forward to having the CP Rail Holiday Train roll into Port Coquitlam’s West Coast Express Station on Saturday, December 17 at 6:15pm. The holiday season is always a busy one, so the programs offered in this season’s leisure guide are a welcome addition to your activities. As always, to find out more about all City events and information, we encourage you to visit our website at www.portcoquitlam.ca. On behalf of City Council and staff, we hope to see you during this wonderful season and wish you all the best in the year ahead!

Winter 2017 ACCESSIBLE RECREATION FOR ALL The City of Port Coquitlam makes every effort to make our programs accessible and inclusive for the whole community. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants and staff, we ask everyone to read the following information.
WE ASK EVERYONE TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION Leisure Buddy Participants require additional support for a variety of reasons. Examples include however are not limited to: Autism, ADHD, FASD, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental health issues, behavioural issues, and language barriers. It is important to remember our program leaders are responsible for the entire group and are not able to focus extended periods of time on any one participant. Also it is important to remember that what may be routine for you and your family is not routine for our leaders. Therefore it is important to consider the following when choosing a program for a participant: • Our Children Services day camps are fast paced, active programs with many transitions and can be very noisy at times. • All of our recreation day camps consist of a high percentage of active games, walks and often endure all types of weather when out in the community and can often be in busy public settings. • If you are unsure if a program is the right fit, please contact the Program Supervisor to find out more. • To assist participants who require additional support we offer our LEISURE BUDDY PROGRAM. Our Buddies are trained volunteers who trained to help participants stay on task, be involved, make positive social connections and build strong community ties. • Our Leisure Buddies do not provide any personal care including changing, toileting, feeding or administering medications.
2
LEISURE BUDDY program: • Participants complete a LEISURE BUDDY REQUEST form – available at all recreation facility front desks. • Access Services requires 2 weeks notice to find an appropriate volunteer. • Participants are matched with a Leisure Buddy on a first come first served basis. • During Summer, Winter and Spring Break programs fill quickly, participants are eligible for 2 weeks of support based on availability and resources. • Support is not guaranteed. If appropriate support cannot be found, the participant will be withdrawn or transferred to a more appropriate program. For more information please contact 604.927.7974 Personal Assistant Subsidy The Recreation Department welcomes patrons of all abilities. Should you require assistance to participate our Personal Assistant Subsidy program we allow your assistant or support person into our programs and drop in activities for FREE. Not sure which level to register in? If you’re unsure what level your child should be registered in or it has been over a year since their last session, drop by for a FREE evaluation. One of our qualified instructors will assess your child and recommend the appropriate Red Cross level for enrollment. Not Progressing? If your child has been in the same Red Cross level for 3 lesson sets, within a 6 month period, and has not progressed to the next level, we will provide the child with one private lesson. Alternatively, you may choose to retake the level for the fourth time at 50% the regular cost of the program. We also offer other programs that may be more suited to the needs of the child, including Performance Enhancers, Front Crawl Workshop and Whip Kick Workshop. Cancelled Classes: A minimum of 48 hours before a class starts, lessons may be cancelled where there is insufficient registration. We will attempt to find space in the next available class or issue a full refund. Maximum Number of Registrations: Program participants can only be registered for 1 swimming lesson set at a time. You may register your child for the next lesson set only after the completion of the lesson set they are currently registered in. Your child may be withdrawn from a program(s) if registered in more than one lesson set per session, or if registered in future lesson sets prior to the completion of the lesson they are currently registered in. There is an administration fee of $5 for each individual activity withdrawal.
Hyde Creek offers Red Cross swimming lessons for school aged children during the day!
Waitlists: If the class you want is full, get on the waitlist! Classes with waitlists may replace any classes that have been cancelled.

Tidal Wave Aquatics is an exciting and unique program offered by Kidsfirst Physio. While the positive impact of physical exercise in the buoyancy and resistance of water is well documented, we have added an extra plus to our program. Under the personal supervision of Brenda Horton, B.S.R. P.T. (reg), MCPA, carefully trained youth assistants who work directly with the children in the water offer one-on-one ratio of assistance to each child. Each specifically prescribed pool therapy program is developed and maintained by Brenda, yet presented with the unsurpassable enthusiasm and energy of the youth. The benefits of this combination to those involved in our pool program are unmistakable. The unique socialization atmosphere provided develops a bond that makes the “therapy” even more fun, appealing, and valuable to the children.

ARTIST: Laura Giesbrecht
The potter’s wheel has fascinated people throughout history. It is Laura’s plan to share her experience at the wheel with the community, and enrich the public’s knowledge of all things pottery. She is looking forward to continuing to share her pottery skills with the residents that had become regular visitors during her residency at Leigh Square (with Ninna Snider – January to June 2016 – as The Muck Sisters) and forging new relationships through the world of pottery.

ARTS & CULTURE
Laura’s intention for this exhibit is to create altered forms – wheel thrown pieces that are altered and transformed once they leave the wheel. This method not only opens up a vast field of possibilities for the artist but expands the viewing public’s perception of wheel thrown pots. These works will be completed in the Leigh Square Outlet building, bisc fired in the Outlet Workroom kiln and finally glaze fired in her personal kiln. The pieces will be on display during her residency to allow the public to see the entire process from start to finish.
March 30– May 2 Claire Sarfeld
Claire Sarfeld is an artist living and working in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. Sarfeld grew up in small town southern Ontario, and moved out to B.C. after completing her degree in Fine Arts; Drawing and Painting from OCAD University in Toronto. The primary source of inspiration for Sarfeld’s work has been an exploration of her travels between Canada and the States and the affective experience of camping and exploring nature. This, combined with her time spent living in Toronto has developed her characteristic style that merges influences of the city and nature. Borrowing aspects of both her traditional training and the more intuitive expressions of abstract style Sarfeld manipulates colours and textures inspired by her travels in nature, and the geometric lines of the city – her focus has been creating a balance of order and chaos.
