Summer 2017 LEISURE GUIDE
Summer has arrived! After an unusually long Canadian winter this year, I am happy that summer is finally here as it brings out the vibrancy of our community. The warmer weather and longer days bring people out and I love seeing our trails, parks, playgrounds and sport fields are buzzing with activity. We also have another great line-up of summer events, festivals and programs for you to take part in. I am excited this year to celebrate 150 years of Confederation with all of you on July 1st this Canada Day in Castle Park. There is a day of fun-filled activities planned that you can read about inside the Leisure Guide or at www.portcoquitlam.ca/canadaday. I also encourage you to gear up and plan to be in town for our second annual PoCo Grand Prix on Friday, July 14 in downtown Port Coquitlam to watch about 200 top international cyclists race along a 1.3-kilometre circuit. You can enjoy a community festival including live entertainment, a Kids Zone, beer garden and other activities. We’re also looking for volunteers and participants in the Kids Race and Corporate Challenge. More information is available at pocograndprix.ca The fun continues with our ‘Summer in the City’ events through July and August, our weekly Farmers’ Market in Leigh Square, ongoing arts and culture activities, on top of all the great summer programs featured in this season’s Leisure Guide. As always, we encourage you to keep updated with what’s going on in your community by following the City on social media or signing up for our E-Updates at www. portcoquitlam.ca/connect. There’s a lot going on, and I look forward to seeing you in our community!

Summer 2017 ACCESSIBLE RECREATION FOR ALL The City of Port Coquitlam makes every effort to make our programs accessible and inclusive for the whole community. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants and staff, we ask everyone to read the following information.
WE ASK EVERYONE TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION LEISURE BUDDY Participants require additional support for a variety of reasons. Examples include however are not limited to: Autism, ADHD, FASD, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental health issues, behavioural issues, and language barriers. It is important to remember our program leaders are responsible for the entire group and are not able to focus extended periods of time on any one participant. Also it is important to remember that what may be routine for you and your family is not routine for our leaders. Therefore it is important to consider the following when choosing a program for a participant: • Our Children Services day camps are fast paced, active programs with many transitions and can be very noisy at times. • All of our recreation day camps consist of a high percentage of active games, walks and often endure all types of weather when out in the community and can often be in busy public settings. • If you are unsure if a program is the right fit, please contact the Program Supervisor to find out more. • To assist participants who require additional support we offer our LEISURE BUDDY PROGRAM. Our Buddies are trained volunteers, who have trained to help participants stay on task, be involved, make positive social connections and build strong communityties. • Our Leisure Buddies do not provide any personal care including changing, toileting, feeding or administering medications.
2
LEISURE BUDDY program: • Participants complete a LEISURE BUDDY REQUEST form – available at all recreation facility front desks. • Access Services requires 2 weeks notice to find an appropriate volunteer. • Participants are matched with a Leisure Buddy on a first come first served basis. • During Summer, Winter and Spring Break programs fill quickly, participants are eligible for 2 weeks of support based on availability and resources. • Support is not guaranteed. If appropriate support cannot be found, the participant will be withdrawn or transferred to a more appropriate program. For more information please contact 604.927.7974 PERSONAL ASSISTANT SUBSIDY The Recreation Department welcomes patrons of all abilities. Adapted Aquatic Opportunities TIDAL WAVE AQUATICS
Tidal Wave Aquatics is an exciting and unique program offered by Kidsfirst Physio. While the positive impact of physical exercise in the buoyancy and resistance of water is well documented, we have added an extra plus to our program. Under the personal supervision of Brenda Horton, B.S.R. P.T. (reg), MCPA, carefully trained youth assistants, who work directly with the children in the water offer one-on-one ratio of assistance to each child. Each specifically prescribed pool therapy program is developed and maintained by Brenda, yet presented with the unsurpassable enthusiasm and energy of the youth. The benefits of this combination to those involved in our pool program are unmistakable. The unique socialization atmosphere provided develops a bond that makes the “therapy” even more fun, appealing, and valuable to the children.

Thanks for keeping the PLAYZONE a safe place to play!
We offer drop-in opportunities in our registered Children Service’s programs if space is available. This allows you to try out a program to see how your children like it, or gives you time to work out or time for yourself on a day that suits your lifestyle. The cost of a drop-in is higher than the registered cost, as we believe children will get much more from the program if they sign up for the whole session.
TIME FOR GYM SUMMER
Run, Jump, Giggle, and Play! This program offers families the opportunity to have a whole lot of fun with a free play sports atmosphere! Stations will be set up for your use including soccer, floor hockey and other active stations, a small ball pit, and fun ride on toys. We end play time off with running races, songs and parachute play. Hyde Creek F Jul 7-Sep 1 9:30-11:30am Drop in $3/each $5/2 children
How does it work? 1.
Choose the program you want your child to try out.
2.
Check availability with our customer service team.
3.
Divide the cost of the program by the number of sessions and add $2. This is your drop-in price for the day.
4.
Pay at the front desk and then give your receipt to the program instructor.
5.
Remember to leave your contact name and number with the instructor for emergencies.
6.

SUPPORT AND ACCESS: Children require additional support for a variety of reasons. Examples include, but are not limited to, Autism, ADHD, physical or mental limitations, behavioral issues, aggression, language barriers and others. Program Camp leaders are responsible for the safety of the entire camp group and strive to provide positive experiences for all children, they cannot spend extended periods of time focusing on the specific needs of one child, therefore, a Leisure Buddy is recommended. Leisure Buddy’s assist in making the recreation camp experience more enjoyable for each child. The volunteer based Leisure Buddy program assist participants in registered recreation programs. When you register your child in a program, the Leisure Buddy form needs to be filled out and returned two weeks prior to the start of the class, to give sufficient time to find an available volunteer. The leisure buddy form can be found at any customer service desk or www.portcoquitlam.ca/access. For more information on program support or Leisure Buddies, please contact Cierra Popove; at popove@portcoquitlam.ca or 604-927-7974.
p Please pack a lunch, snacks, drinks and water daily for our full day camps.
All our camps are PEANUT-FREE. Campers must be minimum age at start of camp; for Jr.Sneakers Camp children that are 5 years old must be entitled to enrol in grade 1. PLEASE NOTE: Schedules and out trip locations are subject to change – Outdoor adventures may move inside due to rain. Programs will not operate on holidays.

Got beetle mania
Learn how to protect your lawn from Chafer beetles A healthy lawn is the best defence against the European Chafer beetle. Reclaim your lawn using these tips: • Prevent infestations: • Dethatch, aerate, overseed and fertilize in the spring. • Keep grass at least 6 cm high and leave clippings on the lawn to act as mulch.
• Monitor your lawn: Look for torn-up grass and turned-over sod caused by birds and animals digging for beetle larvae. • Control infestations: Apply nematodes in summer. For more tips and information, pick up a brochure at City facilities or go to portcoquitlam.ca/chaferbeetle.
Water restrictions begin May 15
Be #waterwise: One hour a week is all you need for a healthy lawn
Avoid fines of up to $450 by following the regional water restrictions from May 15 to October 15 – regardless of weather conditions: Even-numbered homes: 4-9 a.m. Mon, Wed, Sat. During her residency, Afsaneh will work through her appreciation of nature, which is an important part of her inspiration in her recent works since moving to Canada. She believes we are lucky to live in a multicultural country, and through her residency Afsaneh hopes to respect our different cultures by sharing and making a strong connection with the community. Her wish is to teach and guide interested people in different kinds of visual arts, exploring how they affect our lives.

Psychology and visual art share several areas of interest, one of which is visual perception. Within this field, the investigation of abstraction explores the concept of Gestalt. Art is a visual language, an ideal vehicle for encompassing these reference points, while exhibiting similar concepts in pattern, colour, repetition, abstraction and mathematics. P. Thomas Wood is fascinated by colour and the architecture of paint. Wood’s investigation of the “Opstraction” series (optical abstraction) encompasses pattern, colour, repetition and mathematics. The grid system employed to exhibit these ideas is the back drop for rotating patterns and exploring colour combinations within the mathematical confines of the grid. His “Cubestraction” series uses a Dada starting point of torn pieces of paper randomly dropped onto a gesso wet canvas as a compositional starting point, then it is claimed as a colour theory expression with patterns employed for visual continuity.
AUGUST 2 - OCTOBER 2 AFSANEH ROUDGAR
Afsaneh was born in Iran in November 1959, and moved to Canada in 2008. She learned painting from her father who is a master in Watercolour Hyperrealism. She started by working with human portraits using chalk, and since moving to Canada, has found her new passion in watercolour, where she implements her ideas of nature in her paintings. “Nature is a powerful inspiration in my work, it’s all about colour. I love to draw the moments we lose to memory, like the twinkling of the flower in the wind, or the glance of a dog after petting. I believe that nothing is fixed, and so my feeling about life is different from time to time, I just have to go with it. This is the beauty of life.”
