TRITON SUBMARINES
DEEP SEA OCEAN EXPLORATION INTO THE UNKNOWN
Patrick Lahey was seven years old when his family moved from Ottawa, Canada to Barbados, and he set eyes on the ocean for the first time. It was like he knew he was meant to be there. When he was thirteen, he began scuba diving, and by the age of nineteen, Lahey was an avid scuba diver and began his commercial diving career doing underwater construction on oil rigs in the ocean. The company he worked for owned several submersibles and when Lahey dived in one for the first time, it left such an indelible impression on him that he devoted the rest of his life to working with them. He was piloting the company’s submersibles two years later and spent the next forty years working on and operating submersibles all over the world.
Lahey’s passion for the ocean is still as strong as it was at age thirteen. Now, CEO and co-founder of Triton Submarines, Lahey and his team build their own submersibles for deep sea exploration, right here on the Treasure Coast. The Sebastian, Florida—based company designs, engineers, and manufactures the most advanced submersibles in the world, capable of diving to even the deepest points in our oceans. These aren’t just for commercial use, though. In fact, many of the previous decade’s great oceanic discoveries were made not by governments, navies, or institutions, but by a new breed of explorer—the private submersible owner.
Written by Hannah Shellenback Photography by Allison MarkovaThe personal submersible is gaining popularity among yacht owners all over the world. It is being used for everything from scientific research, documentary filming, archaeology, and record-breaking exploration to unique, wonderful adventures shared with friends and family. With each dive likely to show you something nobody else has ever laid eyes on before, it is an experience that is hard to describe, and even harder to beat.
Your adventure begins as you climb inside the acrylic dome through the large hatch. A fully trained pilot at the helm has just given the safety briefing, and as a passenger you simply sit back in your comfortable chair, relax, choose your music to play through the Bluetooth speakers, sip a glass of something cold, and enjoy the dive.
Triton’s dedication to building the most advanced submersibles in the world has afforded them and their clients many world-firsts. They’ve been critical tools in advanced marine research and scientific endeavors, and in filming many well-known shows and documentaries, including David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef, Blue Planet II, Will Smith’s Welcome to Earth, and Legends of the Deep: Deep Sea Sharks, just to name a few. Another popular documentary, Giant Squid, was filmed in Japan. In 2012, Triton made the first dives in a submersible in Antarctica since Cousteau, which occurred about 50 years earlier.
The most successful series-built acrylic-hulled submersible in the world is the three-person, 1,000m rated TRITON 3300/3, built by the same company, Triton Submarines, that created the TRITON 36000/2 “Limiting Factor” - the world’s first submersible certified to full ocean depth, the 200m rated TRITON 660/9 AVA - the world’s first submersible with a non-spherical pressure hull offering panoramic views for up to nine guests, and lastly the 2,300m rated TRITON 7500/3 - the world’s deepest diving acrylic three-person submersible.
These technological wonders, and their shallower rated, sometimes larger capacity “siblings,” have opened the oceans to humanity. Electrically powered with rechargeable batteries, these subs are non-polluting and virtually silent, allowing close observation of marine life without disturbing it. The Triton 36000/2 “LF,” piloted by Lahey, made two dives to full ocean depth (FOD) in 2019, three more dives to FOD in 2021 with Larry Connor, and even conducted the deepest ever salvage at 10,932 meters, or 35,867 feet, during the certification dive in 2019 with Jonathan Struwe of DNV.
For the first time in our history, we can reach every part of the deep sea, experience the wonders below the surface with our own eyes, learn about them, and figure out how to protect them.

Have a cherished piece of heirloom furniture to ship to a family member across the country? Maybe multiple pieces, but not enough for a moving company? That’s where we step in, handling everything with white glove care! We often manage estates after the passing of a loved one, with meaningful pieces being shipped to multiple destinations. Our goal is to make this event as smooth a transition as possible, taking off needless stress on you.
Most often, furniture is shipped with our preferred freight carriers. This process typically take between 10 and 14 business days from the time of pick up to delivery. Pricing is based off of total dimensions and weight of your shipment, as well as the distance to your destination. This is a process we take care of in house, and can even work up a rough estimate prior to deciding if freight shipping is the right option for you.
This service is a great opportunity if you’ve got a piece of furniture that just doesn’t match the interior of your Florida home anymore, but maybe it would fit well the decor of your home up north! Grandfather clocks are also a speciality of ours. Ready to pass it on to the next generation? Give us a call with the details, and we’ll work up a quote with the best options to get your larger household pieces on their way.

How delightful is your homeschool day? My youngest is a busy boy.
I often feel as though I’m living in the storybook, If You Give a Mouse A Cookie, by Laura Numeroff. We go from one activity or mess to another, and our study times are interrupted so frequently that I often send the kids out to play before I lose my calm. How
well we parents enjoy our days with our children is correlated to how well we manage our time, the many emotions, and various needs. Turning on the TV or iPad doesn’t have to be our only solution to stopping the next tantrum. Indeed, I have discovered if children are having trouble controlling themselves, a device may make it worse in the long run! It’s hard to consider this reality because it takes more energy on our part to employ them in something worthwhile. We all want to spend our golden hours well. I have found one solution that has made our days truly delightful— HANDICRAFTS.
Charlotte Mason, in her writings, encouraged educators and caregivers to not fill up the day
with meaningless activities but to teach children to create something useful and delightful. Handicrafts are a perfect solution. Tying macramé knots, weaving with a simple loom or board, sewing, woodworking, sloyd (which undergirds math principles), and basket weaving, are just a few handicrafts that create something useful and delightful. These skills also teach children the good virtues of craftsmanship, finishing something you start, listening to instructions, solving problems after mistakes, and so on. My boys are discovering the many delights in creating something serviceable that they and others can enjoy. Recently they created macramé ornaments and woven mug rugs to sell at a children’s makers market and to gift to loved ones or to friends who need encouragement. The beauty of some of these quiet activities is that they are mobile— my children take their weaving boards with them in the car and to appointments. Handicrafts employ their hands and minds towards something gratifying. And for my youngest, it has helped him focus. He ties macramé knots while I read aloud or while I work with my oldest son on more advanced subjects. With the help of handicrafts, our golden hours are being filled with useful activities that are a delight to us all.
Handicraft Tips: Select quality materials for your child to work with. Consider the final product in use or on display in your home. What colors do you enjoy? Children love to see their work proudly displayed.

The Trouble with Technology
THE AUDIOHOUSE DELIVERS PEACE OF MIND WITH TECHNICAL CONCIERGE SOLUTIONS
We are at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution, where the boundaries blur between the physical and digital world. This includes the promise of the Smart Home, when technology gets so simple for homeowners that the user interface knows who you are, and then can start doing things for you. This is an enticing glimpse of the future but a few problems prevent that vision from becoming a reality for now.
shades and pool controller need updates to perform well. Every device has a different app, so you end up with multiple apps on phones. Control systems such as Savant, Crestron and Control4 do a good job but are not perfect yet.
The smart home is creating frustrated consumers.
We don’t need a complicated study to understand this. Just go to anybody’s house and see them fiddling with everything. Technology is becoming antihuman. 22% of people who buy do-it-yourself (DIY) technology give up and just return the product.

The pattern will soon repeat itself in the Smart Home industry. Standards will soon be adopted to streamline performance.

Sustainability in building design and home renovation casts a broad net of considerations for impacts on the environment. When considering long term impacts to the earth as well as creating healthy interior environments, the use of natural materials on interior surfaces makes a compelling argument as the sustainable choice.
Natural materials use in architecture are living a second life in civilization and bring with them visual and tactile remembrance of their first life - in nature. Bringing the visual evidence of this life and growth in the earth into our spaces provides a deep and visceral connection to the natural world and to layers of time long past. When selected thoughtfully and sourced responsibly, wood and stone surfaces stand the test of time in durability and graceful weathering. Through their own embedded history as well as use throughout human history, they defy trends. This aesthetic timelessness offers the most impactful advantage toward an architecture of sustainability.
The core principle of sustainability in architecture is building longevity, and sourcing materials that endure and inspire connects us to the world around us while reducing the impact that building construction will have on the environment in the future. Technology offers many replications of wood and stone, but we see these materials fall victim to quick trends, and their embodied energy of production and disposal must be weighed against their renewability, particularly when replaced with the frequency of design currents and renovation fads.
Stone and wood in interior spaces offer the ultimate luxury through organic variation, derived from years of development. This natural variation eases maintenance through an intrinsic ability to wear and weather on both a daily and a long-term basis. Natural materials preserve indoor air quality, minimizing the negative effects from chemicals used in manufacturing materials and applied coatings. The aesthetic value that natural materials bring to spaces and the lives they envelope requires no explanation. As Frank Lloyd Wright explained, "Wood is universally beautiful to man. It is the most humanly intimate of all materials."

Atlantic sailfish can be found from the Gulf of Maine to Brazil and tend to stay nearshore, unlike marlin and swordfish. These fast-moving, surface-dwelling fish can be found near the surface where water temperatures range between 70 and 83 degrees. They tend to travel in large schools and are known for corralling baitfish schools, like ballyhoo, by using their fins and bills to injure the prey to come back for the bite. These speedy fish are arguably one of the fastest
SEASON
fish in the ocean, reaching speeds up to 68mph.
Sailfish are highly prized by sport fishermen, who enjoy catching these majestic fish on light tackle. Sailfish tournaments are popular throughout the winter season. It can best be described as organized chaos in the pit of a sport-fishing boat when you get into a school of fish in the spread. It’s common to hook multiple fish at a time when moving through large schools. Tons of rigging is involved, as boats run dredges full of both artificial and
real mullet, along with squid chains and teaser baits.
To ensure a healthy and stable population of fish to target for many generations to come, it is recommended to practice catchand-release methods. Sailfish are known for their fast run, acrobatic leaps, and fierce fighting abilities. They tend to tire easily making it imperative to revive them after a long fight to ensure their survival.

Birding by Ear
LISTEN OUT FOR THE ELUSIVE BELTED KINGFISHER
Birding by ear is so much fun… as long as the birds are communicating!
There is one that has a very distinctive chatter. Can you guess which bird I’m thinking about?
It has a long black bill and dives into the water catching fish for its meals. This bird is also migratory to the Southeastern United States. You are correct if you guessed a Belted Kingfisher, Megaceryle alcyon.
immediately take off! With great disappointment, I go off to find yet another location to sneak up on this elusive feathered friend to capture the shot.
mohawk. Someone once told me that their way of remembering the Belted Kingfisher was that it was the bird with Rod Stewart hair, only black in color.
To learn a bit more about these birds, never hesitate in looking them up on Cornell’s website at AllAboutBirds.org. For more information, contact BrianNativeBirdBoxes.com. Follow along on @NativeBirdBoxes.
The Kingfisher is always great fun for me to observe, and I know I better have my ‘A-game’ on when I find one cooperative enough to take a picture of! It never fails, when this bird is down here during the winter migration cycle and I pull out my lens, they
Regardless, the challenge when they arrive during their migration to South Florida, they are always great birds to see and hear! There are a few species, along with this unique bird, that I like to follow each season when they too, arrive for winter migration. These are the American Kestrels, the smallest falcons of North America, and Pied-billed Grebe, which is a small, duck-like bird in appearance. It is rarely seen in flight and to escape predators or if it gets scared, it will dive underwater and swim great lengths to get away.
This bird has a long, black colored bill. When it’s not being disturbed, it has a head piece of hair like structure that lays flat to its head. When the Belted Kingfisher is alerted, you will see its hair stand up similar to a spiked
The Belted Kingfisher is a medium-sized bird in the Kingfisher family. It has very distinct bluish to black feather colorations along the backside of its body and wings. It’s whitish colored breast also provides unique color patters to determine if it’s a male or female. If you see only white and a bluish collar, you know that it is a male. If the white breast has the bluish collar, but also a brown to rust colored swag of feathers across the breast, this would be the female. From underneath, the tail feathers are a bluish color with white stripes. Next time you encounter a Belted Kingfisher, let me know if you heard it first or saw it first!

EXPLORE THE SEA AND MAKE MEMORIES AT LOCAL, KID-FRIENDLY LOCATIONS
In my twenties, I was always on the go—snorkeling, freediving, hiking and road-tripping. I was a carefree, marine biologist. Then, I had kids and everyone told me my adventures would stop. But, it hasn’t and it doesn’t have to. It’s just different.
My family especially loves the water. My first son hit the beach at two-weeks-old and my second son was at the beach at just one-week-old. Now, they are almost 7-months and 4-years-old.
The beach with babies and toddlers can be tricky, though. We always need an umbrella for shade and if it’s rough, no one can swim, the umbrella flies away in strong wind, and the sand stings. Then, we started going to Blue Heron Bridge in Riviera Beach.
The bridge is a world-renowned diving location and prior to kids, I used to spend hours beneath the surface searching for seahorses, octopuses, and eels.
With kids, it’s also an ideal spot. There’s always shade if you are under the bridge, it’s a short walk from the parking lot to the water, and the water is calm and shallow, since it’s in the protected intracoastal waterway. You also don’t have to worry about sand getting too hot in the summer and burning your feet! When we first started taking my son there, he’d find shells, hermit crabs, sea stars, and fish. I could even freedive and take photographs while my toddler played with his dad or grandma.
Now that my first son is older, we can have even more fun
exploring together because he can swim and dive. With my mask and snorkel, I’ll often tow him around on a boogie board so we can cover more ground. If I find something cool, he’ll slip into the water to take a look. I’ll never forget when he dove down to the seafloor and glimpsed his first seahorse at just 3-years-old! He was so proud of himself and so was I.
Since then, we’ve explored other areas on the intracoastal. Another good location is Dubois Park in Jupiter (just check bacteria levels before going).
Know before you go:
• Blue Heron Bridge is accessed at Phil Foster State Park, 900 East Blue Heron Boulevard, Riviera Beach, FL 33404.
• The bridge has strong tidal flow, if you want to snorkel with the least amount of current and clearest water, plan to be in the water around an hour to half hour before the slack high tide.
• Because it’s a popular dive spot, it’s important to arrive at Phil Foster Park early to find parking.
If you arrive when all the divers are also arriving, especially on weekends, it will be difficult to find a space.
• The park has lifeguards and a large roped off swim area with lots of rocks to explore and marine life, without the worry of boats.
• In any place in the intracoastal, such as Dubois, bacteria levels can get high due to rain or wildlife. It’s best to call and see what the levels are and check for any advisories.
My best hacks for water
adventures with kids:
• Start with locations that you are comfortable with where you know you can find calm, safe water.
• Be prepared with snacks, extra clothes, and towels (I always carry spare clothes, towels, and a beach umbrella in my car).
• Let the kids explore at their comfort level and don’t push them.
• Bring a mask, fins, and a snorkel if you plan to snorkel. For little kids, just playing in shallow water, you can just use goggles as they look for fish and sea stars. It’s a great way to slowly start introducing the concept of snorkel gear.
• To avoid getting overwhelmed with too much stuff, leave the beach toys at home there’s plenty of stuff to find at the beach for entertainment, like sticks, sea beans, and shells. If you want something, a shovel and a bucket work great.
As a parting thought, being an outdoorsy family just means being outdoors. It doesn’t always have to be a big adventure. Sometimes, adventures are small—like a walk on a pier, picnic by the water, or just playing in the backyard.

Personal Transformations
BEGIN NOW, WITH WHAT YOU HAVE, WHERE YOU ARE
In my years of working with people, as well as in my personal experience, I always find the concept of time and the energy of “waiting” very interesting. As a provider, it seems like at times we get stuck “waiting” for the right moment… and this can last hours, days, months, and even years. I understand the concept of patience, however,
I’ve also become growingly aware of how the “waiting” can be the perfect excuse. Yes, I said it, excuse, to not act.
For more information and to inquire about 1:1 offerings and workshops, contact Vicky Dominguez by email at bymeditacionesdeunaloca @gmail.com. Follow Soulfully: Inner Work & Meditation on @bymeditacionesdeunaloca.
It’s hard for me to even get there because in acknowledging it, it forces me (in the coaching process, the client) to contemplate the fact that maybe, just maybe, whatever the goal may be, it’s not wanted bad enough. It peeks into the lack of decision, discipline, commitment, unhealed beliefs, and begs questioning things… I mean, I could go on with this list but you get the point. The gist of it is that the energy we expend postponing is often far more than what we would spend if we just began.
In my observations about time and the perception of it, I notice two significant things come up, as well. One is, we think we have
time, until we don’t… this is why we leave things for later and when later comes, we are haunted by the “what if I had started before?” The second is regret, one of the most consuming things.
Also, and in the spirit of beginning 2023, beginnings of years are always one of the “times” where intentions peak. We seem to feel driven, motivated, ignited, with an unwavering will, and a vision for what we want to create. This is the time, after all. Intentions are crucial, believe me, if there is someone out there who believes in them, it’s me. I also find myself, more and more, needing to emphasize on the importance of embodiment. Meaning, that while having the idea is the beginning, “walking the talk” is what really makes things happen.
Obviously, transformations do not happen overnight, and, if they do, usually, they are castles built on sand, shaky sand. Sustainability of the changes we want to make in our lives is something to consider when establishing our vision. Small actionable steps are necessary to accomplish anything. After all, we have to practice who we want to be, that’s the secret sauce.
So, if you are seeking to make changes and genuinely want to begin, but don’t know where, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
• How does my concept of time and the energy of “waiting” impact my vision and goals in general? For the next year? For tomorrow?
• Do I have a vision?
• Where am I now? What do I want moving forward?
• How can I make that happen? What are some small actionable steps that I am willing and able to make, right here, right now?
Food for thought in this new year: remember, for some of us the most epic thing we can imagine doing is taking time for ourselves on the daily basis, others want to run marathons, some seek promotions or career changes, others want to be at peace with things on the daily… everything is valid. This is your reminder… Begin now, with what you have, where you are. Every step counts. You’ll thank yourself later. Cheers to 2023!

PARTNERSHIP - To help you achieve your best life, we strive to understand your background, philosophy, needs, and objectives to work with you and for you. As fiduciaries, we take pride in our transparency around our own costs and compensation. Most importantly, you need to feel comfortable with your Advisor. If you are not working with a fiduciary advisor or would like a second opinion, set up a confidential complementary appointment. Our planning and investment services are structured to always to be in your best interest.
