Surf's Up Let's Get Away!
W
ho’s ready for summer? I know I sure am. Summer is my favorite time of year. Spending mornings walking the beach, going for an early swim or paddling out, life at the beach just doesn’t get any better. We truly do live in paradise. With the summer months heating up the temps, boating, surfing or just swimming in our cool blue waters is so refreshing! This issue we decided to explore up and down the east coast to check out surfing destinations where the locals hang. Of course, we had to have Adam King, as our cover photographer, especially for this issue to showcase the coolest Florida east coast surf shots. We hope you discover some old and new hot spots for yourself and catch a few waves. Although no one looks forward to hurricane season, the surf scene benefits tremendously when a storm is offshore. If you find yourself cruising up A1A to Jacksonville or beyond, consider staying at little artistic bungalow hotels like Hotel Palms in Jacksonville or the microresort at The Park on St. Simons Island. These quaint refurbished mid-century modern hidden gems are all the rage. Most are familyowned and operated and have suffered huge financial setbacks due to the recent pandemic. Grab a book, slow your roll and wherever the road takes you, consider exploring your new surroundings on a bike once you get to your desired destination. Just be sure to get outside and explore! ow that the summer season has officially begun, hot summer days, along with those sleepy afternoon rain showers have arrived on the Treasure Coast. For this issue, we decided to do a little road trip north to Atlantic Beach where we met our cover photographer, Adam King, and his little family to do some shooting and exploring. Next time you are in Jax, be sure and check out Hotel Palms for a true laid-back old Florida vibe. We love the simplicity of the mid-century architecture and décor of this little hidden gem. It has the best little coffee cafe by Show Pigeon Coffee and the friendliest staff. We loved relaxing around the fire pit for happy hour and sipping our coffee in the morning. You may notice a new face in this issue, as we formally welcome Alyssa to the “girl gang.” She has been working behind the scenes for many years but has now joined the Portfolio team full-time. life When I lived in Illinois, during the long winters I would escape and listen to playlists of songs that reminded me of coastal life, island living, and days out on the water. One song that always made the list was this old Jimmy Buffet song “Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season” in which he talks about living in the tropics, riding out what storms came his way, and enjoying it in a way that seemed more mythical than realistic. At least that’s what it seemed like to a kid from the cornfields of Illinois. Now, after living in Florida for many years and experiencing several hurricanes, I’ve found some similarities with a few moments in those lyrics.

There’s a creeping anxiety that comes with the start of hurricane season each year. I’ll never be the seasoned Floridian that will just “batten down the hatches” in all but the most extreme situations, but in Florida’s surf community, I see those with not just anxiety, but hope. Summer often brings a calm to the waters here that has earned the term “Lake Atlantic.” It can be miserable for the dedicated wave hunter. Surfer, Betsy Harris

Florida has produced many of the world’s best surfers. It’s an impressive achievement for a state that gets overlooked in any conversation on where to find good waves. Hurricane season, however, is another story. While my Midwest roots cause me to take a deep breath and start looking up spaghetti models and escape routes every time a storm earns a name. On the other hand, my seasoned surfing friends are looking up those same models, trying to find those paths that will be just far enough offshore to bring the perfect conditions. It may take a road trip North to the Outer Banks, South to Miami, or over to the Gulf Coast, but waves are coming during a dry spell, and they aren’t just ordinary waves, they’re hurricane waves. Wave forecasting in Florida is taken to a new level by the most dedicated Floridian surfers. Every bit of data is absorbed: depressions off the coast of Africa, tropical disturbances hundreds of miles offshore, religiously checking data from offshore buoys for swell periods, monitoring wind charts, studying tide charts and local weather forecasts. Lastly, constantly exploring the coastline by bike, car, boat, or even small aircraft (yes, really), looking for sandbars, or rock jetties that can pair up with the upcoming swell direction. It’s tribal, dedication on a level that any outdoorsman or athlete would respect. This is one of the reasons I’m never tired of shooting my local surf scene. They are connected to the ocean. When a favorable swell approaches our coastline, a slow trickle of text messages and Instagram direct messages start popping up. “Hey buddy, how ya been,” soon followed by “what are ya doing Thursday morning?” Surfer, Reid Mikalsen

I love my surf community. I proceed with a lot of caution and respect every time I take my camera out into a lineup. There’s a term called “mind surfing” that is usually correlated with that special photo that takes you back to that special wave. While not everyone wants their picture taken, for some surfing is more personal and not to be shared. For many, there’s a second thrill when we get to share the shots we captured. The neighborhood surf kids or “groms,” always get a thrill out of seeing their shots. It’s a fulfilling experience to capture those moments, for today, for their parents and families, and maybe for a fun revelation by grandchildren 50 years from now. You can call me a “surf photographer,” but what I really want to share is our connection with the ocean. From silent moments at the first glimpse of sunrises on the water, to some of the best surfers in the world riding raging hurricane swells, it is all connected. I feel it myself. A
disproportionate amount of my fondest childhood memories come from my family’s spring vacations to Sanibel Island. I grew up in the far suburbs of Chicago, right on the limits of where the city stops, and the endless Midwestern cornfields begin. My father was an air-traffic controller, and my mother a school teacher. Winters in Illinois were harsh. Once the charm of snow during the holiday’s passes, it was a solid four months before warm sunny days would even be a possibility. Every year, my father put together his vacation time, we packed up our pop-top camper, and we spent 2 weeks of the simple life on Sanibel Island. Looking back, it felt like a life raft. My mother would take us shopping for “Florida clothes.” We couldn’t wear them until vacation started. It was the only clothes (besides a new baseball jersey) that I remember ever really being excited to wear. All Spring we looked forward to the trip. For three days we hauled across America. My father would play Willie Nelson tapes and check for “smokies” ahead using the CB radio he always dusted off just for the trek. I’d play road trip games with my brother and sister while my mother paged through the atlas, trying to find a route around the Atlanta traffic. John Hughes couldn’t have written it better. The payoff was Florida. It was glorious every time. When we crossed the state line, we’d pull over at the welcome center, where they always had fresh squeezed orange juice. This orange juice tasted nothing like the stuff I had been drinking out of a box all winter. It was fresh, it was sweet, and it just tasted like vacation. I was sold. This was the life for me. The weeks ahead were filled with beach days, campfires, searching for local wildlife, (and probably getting a little too close for my mother’s comfort). Every day was an adventure. Fast forward 35 years, I have 2 young children, a beautiful wife, and a wonderful life on Amelia Island, Florida. My passion for photography

is showcasing the beauty of Florida, and especially it’s beautiful waters. We live an island life, we raise our children with a love of the ocean, and we spend our days by the water as often as possible. We found a missing essential for our sandy and wet beach days. My wife, a designer, started a splash-proof beach bag company, Marloru. For the last year we’ve been traveling the coastlines visiting boutiques and surf shops to carry our bags. Our little family business allows me to capture life on the coast as our small company grows. We are a new generation of a “mom-and-pop business,” and we couldn’t be happier starting right here in Florida. It’s where we were always meant to be. I took the cover shot of Gramm McCoy back in March in Jacksonville. There was a nice spring swell. The local surf scene flocked to their favorite breaks. Of course, this photograph is my own artistic take, mixing some classic South Florida tones, with North Florida imagery. A phrase that runs in my head is, “the world doesn’t need another surf photographer.” I love seeing new faces out shooting in the water, but with 33 million photos found under the hashtag “#surf” on Instagram, embracing my individuality isn’t just suggested, it’s required. I wanted to create a shot that was unmistakably mine, and unmistakably Florida. Marloru Bags
A Love for Surf and Sea Creates a New Creative Concept
L
ast March we knew things were about to get weird. We are Christina and Adam King, and between the two of us, we have been blessed with education, experience, and resilience. A global pandemic brought infinite unknowns and more questions than answers. I remember being scared but calm; confused but focused. As an artist and as a creator, I felt I was part of this world crisis and very much “non-essential.” We had no control over what was happening outside of our home. However, we knew what we could do, and what we had to do was adapt and get creative. Stuck at home together, we decided to combine our strengths and find a way to lift to people up through art. Looking back, it’s kind of funny how a designer and a photographer took so long to work together—but we’re having so much fun now that we finally did! After many years of working for some of the largest brands in the surf and fashion industries, I’ve often considered building something of my own one day. The year of 2020 provided that opportunity for us. Necessity is the mother of all creation. We live on Amelia Island with our 2 young children, which to us means water is life. It both calms and excites. Yoga on the beach, surfing, swimming, or riding our bikes at low tide is how we spend most days. Everything gets wet and sand is inevitable. With so much of our lives revolving around the water, I decided to re-think the classic beach bag. I wanted a strap that would keep my hands free, a zip closure to secure valuables, and most importantly, I needed a splash friendly material to keep everything dry. In addition to its function, I wanted the look and feel to be laid-back and wearable for everyday use. I simply started with the fun part: the design. After months of trial and error, our boho, beach-chic line of bags was born. Your bag gets wet, but your stuff stays dry! We call it “stash and splash.” Marloru was created as a special tribute and outlet for women to support other women. Our hope is to change perspective on things than cannot be changed. Merging passions: water and art. At the age of four, my parents were pulling me behind a speed boat with my life jacket on and my skis tied together. Grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles all gathered around, cheering me on as I left the shore. I’ve been finding ways to ride on water ever since. I untied my skis, started slaloming, wake boarding, wake surfing, and of course, tubing. About a year ago, I decided to learn to surf. I thought it would be a natural crossover; that my previous water experiences would somehow allow me to skip right to the next level. However, surfing is like trying to jump on a moving train that doesn’t run on schedule or even follow the same tracks. It’s a completely new sport and skill set. I had to really work for it. My victory wasn’t about being great out on the ocean, it was that I was out there trying. The same is true with art. The bags we sell today are not our first drafts. We’ve made several revisions along the way, learned some valuable lessons and realized that things don’t happen overnight… It’s ok to make mistakes and if you want something bad enough, you’re going to have to work really hard for it and we’re lucky enough to be surrounded by family and friends cheering us on. Adam, too, is happiest in the water. He’s always been equal parts creative and tech savvy, which is why photography, specifically water photography, is the perfect fit for him. For years, he’s been able to escape to the water to

T H E L O C A L S L I F E S T Y L E , A R T & FA S H I O N shoot, then re-tell his story by editing his photos on the computer, creating a perfectly balanced analog to digital lifestyle. For a longtime, we’ve been working on creative projects separately, but through Marloru, we’ve been able to fuse our talents and build our brand together. His art is a big piece of the branding puzzle and he’s the business mind behind this operation. Most importantly, he’s a constant voice of encouragement. Through Adam’s photography and a bit of storytelling, social media has given us a strong platform to give Marloru an identity. Our social presence is a great way to build women up and support one another. So, instead of just saying, "Here's a pretty picture of our product,” we want it to read, "Check out this awesome person," and include a photo of their art, hobbies or recent accomplishments. The goal is women supporting and elevating women! Marloru started as a way to escape and be creative, but once it got out into the world, we were surprised how quickly a community of support grew around it. Suddenly, it belongs to everyone, which we love. We currently offer two styles of Marloru bags. The Sun-day bag has a cross body strap that keeps your hands free and fits everything you need for a fun-filled day. The Twofer is our smaller cosmetic bag which has belt loops on the back and can be worn as a hip pack. We felt it was important to introduce Marloru with our vibrant, up-beat print, the Mexi-Flo because after 2020, everyone can use a little extra sunshine. The Coyote print is inspired by the wild sunsets and red earth I encountered on a trip to the mountains, but is actually lovingly named after our son and the Kayla print is named after our daughter who is an artist in every sense of the world. Last summer a friend of ours, a surfboard shaper, needed a new logo. He said he’d make me a board if I made him a logo. Sweet trade, right? He even let me use the Coyote print as the artwork. Check him out at @psurfboardsfernandina. Marloru has given us a unique opportunity to work as a family towards a common goal. It has introduced our kids to many talented athletes, adventurers, and artists. We hope being around these positive and influential people will encourage our kids to believe in their own abilities. It’s important for our kids too, every once in a while, to see us outside of our mom and dad roles. You can’t just tell them things, sometimes, you need to show them. “Follow your dreams,” doesn’t mean much unless they see us actively chasing after ours. Building a Community for Over 100 Years
I
magine Fort Pierce without the inlet. No port, no fishing industry, no lemons from the Bahamas, no gold hunters and no Navy Seal Museum. The six boat manufacturers that call Fort Pierce home would also be missing. Would artist Bean Backus have lived here without the fishing industry in the early 1900’s? Without Bean Backus, would Alfred Hair and the Highwaymen have learned to paint and sell their upson landscapes here, there and everywhere in pre-Disney Florida? The Frogmen, plus 140,000 other military personnel, wouldn't have been here to practice the D-Day invasion of Europe with landing craft in the 1940's. That would have cancelled out the Navy Seal Museum located on A1A in North Hutchinson Island. In 1973, 4th generation citrus grower, Philip “Flip” Gates Jr., President of Kanawha Groves and packer of the famous Florigold brand, saw the first shipment of Indian River citrus leave Fort Pierce and sail for Japan. It would take 25 days to arrive in Yokohama. Japan would then become one of the top international destinations for the Treasure Coast’s citrus exports. John Jetson, founder of Jetson TV and Appliances, moved from Ft. Lauderdale in the early 1970’s, after his tour of duty with the Air Force in Vietnam. As an avid boater and fisherman, Fort Pierce beckoned him. Jetson started his first store in Fort Pierce, which then grew into a 7-store chain that is now ranked in the top 30, nationally. Each spring, Jetson would take family, friends and clients on his boat, named the Huzzy, through the inlet and cruise to the Bahamas searching for fish, fun and adventure. In 2006, they were cruising Grand Bahama and found an old pirate ship in an inlet near Lucaya. It was one of the ghost ships from the movie Pirates of The Caribbean. Matt Samuel is considered a local in Fort Pierce because his grandfather, a fireman in Washington, D.C., decided to attend a 1950’s union convention 30

in Miami. Cruising down U.S. 1, he fell in love with Fort Pierce and the inlet, and his family relocated here. Matt and his wife, Crystal, are past presidents of the Ft. Pierce Lion’s Club. Their incredible Highwaymen collection is on loan and displayed at Fort Pierce City Hall and the Police Department. They spearheaded the cleanup of Old Fort Park and the Ais burial mound there with a $30,000 donation from the Lion’s Club. Their son, Bo, has a charter boat out of Little Jim Bait and Tackle. For some, it’s the gleam of gold, their love of the sea, and the hunt for treasure that lures them to the inlet. Bonnie Schubert and her 87-year-old mother, Jo (a coal miner’s daughter from Kentucky), would take their boat, the Gold Hawg, through the inlet and search passionately for treasure. In 2010, they found it: a 5.5 inch gold statue called “Pelican in her Piety,” worth upwards of $100,000. It had been buried for almost 300 years in the sand off Fort Pierce. John Brandon, of Fort Pierce, knew that he wanted to be a treasure hunter since he was 10 years old. His neighbor, Don Porter, was an avid beachcomber and used a metal detector to find treasure. In 1963, he showed John a silver coin he had just found. In seconds, John was hooked, and he began mowing lawns to get money to buy his own metal detector. Around 12 or 13 years of age, he began asking Mel Fisher for a job and Mel would ignore him. When John turned 18, Mel finally relented and hired him. His passion became his profession and that’s still the case today. Whether it’s the sea, the hunt, or the gold itself, without the inlet and the community that came together to build it 100 years ago, it would all be a dream. I was reading a science lesson to my boys and my nieces the other day. “Do you think the Earth is big? Well, Uranus is four times bigger!” At this point, it was hard to get our lesson back on track the giggles and laughter took over. We all will never forget the size of Uranus! I read about a professor who incorporates humor into his difficult math course. Even students who come to his classes full of anxiety leave with good grades. It’s pretty clear why. Humor and laughter help to pave the way for better learning. I can bear witness to this, along with many moms who often find teaching nearly impossible, once the aggravation and tears begin. I've learned the hard way that productive days included laughter and lightheartedness. “A joyful heart is good medicine…” Proverbs 17:22. Neuroscientists agree. Laughter is linked to boosting the immune system, pain relief, and aids in relaxation and improves overall mood. Anxiety can be a real part of homeschool life (for parents and children). Let’s face it, having littles around you all day, interrupting your every thought, or the many teenage hormones can cause A LOT of stress. It is too easy to slip into our darker emotions. Practice taking a deep breath and focus on what is funny at the moment. This change in

perspective can transform the atmosphere of our homes. My mother gave me a beautiful card on Mother’s Day that had a picture of green plants in a greenhouse. She wrote, “As mothers, we are like a greenhouse where our children can grow.” I see laughter and lightheartedness as the perfect conditions for our children to flourish in. Make it a habit to laugh with your children every day! Our youngsters are like having built-in comedians. My oldest when he was four said to me one day: “Mom, I’m going to start smoking.” Me: “What?! How do you know about smoking?” Zai: “Fred” (the neighbor) Me: “You don’t want to smoke it will turn your lungs black!” Zai: “Black is my favorite color!” Sometimes you have to just laugh it off. Kids say and do so many cute and hilarious things throughout the day. I often just look at their cute faces and giggle. On the days I am preoccupied or set on accomplishing a long agenda, I miss the little moments and opportunities for laughter. I can get way too serious! I’m taking cues from my children… stay in the moment and enjoy the little things. Make it your mission as you go through your day to enjoy the simple pleasures all around you. Fill your home with laughter and reap the benefits of a smoother, calmer, and more productive day. It just might boost your mood and be contagious… it starts with a smile. Those of you who frequent our store already know Matteo, but those of you who do not, you should get to know him. Hotel Palms
A Local Neighborhood Gathering Space with Art & Design
I
nspired by both old Florida and Palms Springs, California, Julie Schwartzenberger is the visionary behind Edge and Line Design Studio. Her designs have a coastal casual feel, with sprinkles of mid-century modern and punk rock elements. Julie treats every client and every project as a new beginning. “Each design is a compilation of the vibes of the site, the client’s wants and needs, and my interpretation of what the space should be,” says Julie. Adept at residential, as well as commercial design, Julie’s expertise crosses over into hospitality design, which she says, “isn’t just for hotels.” As co-owner and principal designer of the Hotel Palms in Atlantic Beach, Florida, Julie brings her passion for West Coast minimalist luxury, to the interiors of the 11-room renovated motor court inn, located three blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. Unique light fixtures, large area rugs, reclaimed wood headboards, bright and beachy throw pillows, and original concrete flooring dotted with coquina shell are just a few of the design elements Julie thoughtfully incorporated into the renovation of the 1947 inn. Following a trip to Austin, Texas in 2014, Julie’s husband, Greg, approached Julie about renovating an old motel just up the street from where the couple lived. The motel had been around since the 1940’s, when motor courts were the most popular roadside lodging option around, and bespoke a mid-century design that Julie was immediately drawn to. Additionally, both Greg and Julie, along with another family member and third partner in the venture, had always possessed a passion for hotels. The three of them felt strongly about bringing the first boutique hotel to the Jacksonville market, so in 2015, the three partners purchased the property, known then as the Palms Retro, but always had the intention to renovate it once they learned more about the hospitality industry. After running the property for nine months, the motel underwent a nine-month renovation, which involved a complete overhaul of the rooms and courtyard with local contractor, Eastern Shores Construction. Since opening the Hotel Palms in October 2016, Julie and Greg have worked together to tap world-renowned artists to curate blank walls on the exterior and interior of the 11-room hotel. The most acclaimed of this group is Jason Woodside, who grew up in St. Augustine, 45 minutes south of Hotel Palms. His geometric shapes and bright colors can be seen throughout the hotel. “My design intent with Hotel Palms was always twofold—design a gathering space with a focus on nature and the local neighborhood, while at the same time, introduce guests to art and design, and leave them to interpret their individual experience.” This October, Hotel Palms will celebrate their five-year anniversary, but Julie’s commitment to keeping the property fresh is ongoing. At Hotel Palms, she is constantly updating small design details and re-upping linens and room amenities. When she’s not at the hotel, she can be found working on one of her many residential projects. “Our goal at Edge and Lines is to make residential interiors feel just as inviting and unexpected as your favorite hotel room with a view.” Julie lives with her husband, kids, and dog in their Neptune Beach home. She loves walking the beach, pilates, and traveling.

ou are probably no stranger to the surge that the building and designing industry has seen this year. It’s reflective of a year spent at home finding all the things right and wrong with your home. We’re grateful for all of the projects we’re currently working on and wanted to share some of our favorite kitchen trends of the year. Kitchen color schemes have been white on white for years and while it is still a fan favorite, the infusion of color is all the rage. We’re selecting a lot of navy, charcoals, light grays, and even muted greens! Whether the look involves color differences in the upper and lower cabinets or a statement island, look for more than just white kitchens this year. While color is arriving, appliances are fading into the design with the resurgence of paneled fronts. Is it a cabinet or is it a refrigerator? You’ll have to get closer to find out! Clients love this look because the kitchen has become an integrated part of the living space and this trend results in a design that looks more like furniture. The options with panel ready appliances are endless. Want a white shaker-style fridge? Want large scale pulls? It’s all about the aesthetics when it comes to renovating your kitchen and this is one way to ensure a uniform appearance. Lastly, stylish options for range hoods are high on everyone’s list. We’re forgoing the stainless-steel look and opting for something colorful or embellished to make the kitchen look less commercial. For the longest time,

Wake Up to Wild Coffee
A
re you looking for a Florida native plant that can add a stately look to your garden? Look no further than wild coffee (Psychotria nervosa). This plant is attractive in any garden, because of its glossy foliage and its ability to thrive in both sun and shade. The wild coffee is sometimes mistaken for a gardenia plant due to its greenery. As a matter of fact, the gardenia and wild coffee both belong to the same family of plant—Rubiaceae. While wild coffee is in the same family as true coffee, coffea spp., they are not the same species. Florida wild coffee does not produce a bean that is edible by humans. The “beans” or fruit that the plant produces, resembles a coffee bean, but does not contain any caffeine. The fruit of the plant ripens during November and December. They are reddish purple in color and grow to about a half inch in length. The fruit of the plant is eaten by a large variety of birds. The species of birds that eat the beans include the Florida state bird, the mockingbird, as well as blue jays, catbirds, and cardinals. Wild coffee also produces a bloom that will show in Spring and Summer. The flowers of the plant are white and attract some varieties of butterflies, such as the rare Atala butterfly, found mostly in Southeast Florida. One of the main reasons this plant could be a great addition to a garden is its durability. Once established, wild coffee requires little to no care. It is moderately salt-tolerant and can be used in oceanfront plantings, if the plant

is somewhat protected from direct salt spray. This shrub can grow to a height of approximately 4-10 feet tall when left untrimmed, or can be trimmed to maintain a more manageable height of 3-4 feet. Wild coffee performs best in a partial to full shade environment. If grown in full sun, it will develop yellowish leaves and its growth will not be as full as when planted in a shadier environment. Some of the best applications for this plant are when it is used as a filler plant for a planting bed or at the base of a tree. Living the Florida Life in Style
W
e’ve all been to that one person’s house who has leaned a bit too far into a certain theme. The biggest offenders for us in Florida are things like shells or nautical themes. I am a huge proponent for making your home a reflection of what you love. If you are an avid beachcomber or a proud sailboat owner, I think you should display that. However, the over-the-top everything has an anchor on it look can come off as a bit juvenile. With a little restraint, you can work in your love for the Florida lifestyle with ease and sophistication. My biggest piece of advice is to try to avoid overdoing things such as fabrics that display obvious nautical symbols. Instead, I encourage you to gain the “Florida feel” through color and texture. Incorporate the colors you might see at the beach such as blue, teal, bright whites, and sandy beiges. Bring in the texture of the beach with woven items to reflect the sand or sheen and iridescent to mimic that of shells. Another great way to give a subtle nod to the nautical lifestyle is through decorative tapes and trims that can be used on pillows and upholstery. There are many options that give a rope-like texture which can allude to boating life. If you just cannot live without that shell fabric, try to use it in small areas. For example, it might make more of an impact on a throw pillow rather than on an entire chair or draperies. In addition, if you have a collection of things, such as sailing memorabilia or collected shells, disperse them in small displays throughout the home rather than displaying them all together. This will allow them to be appreciated while not being overwhelming. Lastly, if you really can’t resist having a truly thematic room, please limit it to just one room. A great room to do this in would be a guest room, as those visiting don’t get to enjoy the nautical style as often as us lucky Floridians. A Purveyor of Memories
W
hen I think of the past year, one word always comes to mind: authentic. It was the year of a pandemic, where the entire world shutdown, but for some, it was an awakening, a rebirth. Opportunity was born from within. Passions were refueled. As you stroll past Authentic Cycles, located next door to one of my favorite places to eat, you’ll slow down... literally. Inside this new shop is a private collection of motorcycles ranging from minibikes to rare Harleys, and maybe even an exotic one. I was in awe of the parade of spectators that stopped to browse, deep in conversations about fond memories this little new shop was revving up for people. As I sat there in observation, you could feel the excitement and positivity emitting from each and every person as they conversed with their friend about a story they remembered from their past, involving some type of motorcycle that this little place had sparked. To some, it may look like just a store full of old bikes. But to others, it is a special place that brings back hope and inspiration in a time where life has stressed the human soul to its limits. Living in the present is all we truly have

and recalling fond memories of the past that sparks joy is as real and authentic as it gets. Stop by and “see” for yourself. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Bob, and getting to know him and his “story.” We all have one, deep within us, that connects us to our next friend by a common thread that may not have anything to do with a motorcycle at all. ith such an incredible place to live being in North America, there are so many beautiful species of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and amphibians who also call it home. Here in the southeastern region, specifically in Florida, there are so many species that have adapted to our area that one may think of it being interesting, cool, and yes, exotic. However, is that species you are observing a non-native (meaning it is not from North America)? Many of these non-native species have now become invasive, labeled by the Florida Wildlife Commission biologists. Identified species can be classified as exotic or invasive, meaning it is not from the region, and it is negatively impacting native species for space, shelter, and food. Invasive species can negatively affect the native wildlife’s ability to reproduce and prevail. More information can be found at MyFWC.com. Keep up to date on what species of our region might be migratory and just passing through, or native species. It might be an introduced species that is considered non-native and worse-case scenario—invasive. Sometimes, these species are often very pretty to look at, but are not desirable to the region, in which they have been introduced to and now cause conflict within nature. 1. The Green Iguana This species is found predominately along coastal or canal systems in the southern parts of Florida. Besides devouring vegetation and flowers on plants, they will burrow behind seawalls and other similar structures causing them to weaken and collapse. Iguanas are also well known for eating bird eggs, specifically the herons and egrets.
2. The Burmese Python Considered top-dog of the Everglades and is disrupting the entire food chain, this snake has been caught and measured in sizes slightly over 18 feet in length! Though non-venomous, this constrictor can capture animals with its stealth moves and illusive ability to blend directly into its surroundings. It prefers areas near water, like our canals where a large number have been found. However, these reptiles are primarily all throughout the Everglades from Miami to Naples. Although they are usually found in or near water, they are also known for being incredible climbers and rest high in trees. 54

The Muscovy Duck This waterfowl has adapted to our southern regions and has become quite popular by individuals who do not realize it is quite aggressive and will take over nesting sites of our native species. In addition, these ducks adapt to human activity of handfeeding, which is highly discouraged.
4. The Egyptian Goose Similar challenges exist with this goose, but equally, these exotic species will challenge other birds. Both the Muscovy Duck and the Egyptian Goose have been known to fight off an Osprey and chase it away from its nesting site. It’s unbelievable that either species would be able to fight a raptor, like an Osprey from its nest, but it does and it’s very unfortunate to observe.

he Sunchill concept was born in August 2020, after years spent brainstorming ideas for more fun in the sun. Growing up, my friends and I spent a lot of time afloat, gazing into the distance, thinking of the best way to enjoy the water with a drink in hand. We were always trying to take our leisure game to the next level. Yes, we had floats. We tried out the all the inflatable party islands from Sam's. They were all great fun… until they weren't. They leaked air, the big ones weighed a ton, they couldn't hold more than a person or two, if you leaned too far to one side the whole thing flipped. You know how it goes. Eventually the idea of an inflatable ring with a supportive net in the middle entered the realm of possibilities and things started ticking along. First, we had the breakthrough of figuring out how to perfectly curve the drop stitch fabric, similar to the material used on your stand-up paddleboard.

Then, we figured out how to heat-weld the seams to prevent air from leaking, forever. Next, we perfected the poly-pro mesh netting that ties the whole concept together while keeping our butts afloat. Finally, designing the first-of-their-kind detachable drink holders, sizing up and selecting materials for the carrying bag, finding a pump supplier, and then on to testing. Fast forward through a couple dozen prototypes and we are excited to present Sunchill to water lovers who are looking for a fun and relaxing way to enjoy the sun while chilling on the water. Just launched in March, sales have taken off and we are already planning to expand Vero Beach production to a facility by the airport. All development, testing and assembly are completed here in Vero with several critical parts imported from suppliers abroad. It is a labor of love and we are excited to continue chasing the dream of launching a new and fun product that we hope all water lovers will enjoy. Gearing Up for Lobster Season
A
s summertime approaches, one looks forward to gearing up and diving for spiny lobster. Here in the Treasure Coast, catching these quick and delectable crustaceans can be a little challenging, but well worth it. Spiny lobsters tend to spend the daylight hours hiding in ledges, under rocks, or in holes. They emerge at night to feed. Harvesting lobster requires certain equipment for the safety and the comfort of both you and the lobsters. It requires one to have a measuring device, gloves, a tickling stick, a saltwater license, a waterproof flashlight, a game bag, a dive flag, a snorkeling set and/or scuba gear. Although free diving can be difficult, it is done frequently in this area because the lobsters can be found in areas as little as five to ten feet of water (due to the water clarity being good). There are two Florida Lobster Seasons, the two-day mini season and the eight-month regular lobster season. The mini lobster seasons always lies on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July. The regular season is always from August 6th through March 31st. There is a bag limit of 12 lobster per person, here in the Treasure Coast and the minimum size limit must measure larger than 3 inches. Another important thing to note is that if a female lobster has eggs, just know she is off limits. Goliath Groupers
Growing in Numbers But Not Out of Danger
O
ff the coast of South Florida, underwater giants lurk in sunken ships and coral reefs. Atlantic goliath groupers are behemoth fish that can reach up to 800 pounds and live nearly 40 years. Though harmless, coming face-to-face with such an impressive predator 100-feet beneath the surface is certainly intimidating. Goliath groupers are among the largest of groupers, reaching more than 8 feet in length. They’re found primarily in shallow tropical waters among coral and artificial reefs on both coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, including in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Keys in the United States. Fished to near-extinction, goliath grouper populations plummeted in the 1970s and 1980s in the Southeastern U.S. They’ve since rebounded due to a ban on killing the fish in state and federal waters off Florida since 1990. “Goliath groupers are a conservation success story. We have successfully managed them and protected them for 30 plus years,” said Chris Malinowski, Ph.D., a research and conservation biologist and grouper specialist. “It’s one of the few species that has come back from the brink of extinction.” Though that doesn’t hold true throughout their entire range, which extends down to Brazil. Now, diving with goliath groupers is now an ecotourism activity in South Florida. Scuba divers flock to deep wrecks to witness and photograph large schools that have come together for spawning, typically between the months of July and October. Yet, these fish still face problems that threaten their recovery, like cold snaps that kill young grouper living in the shallow, coastal mangroves, as well as red tide events, habitat loss due to development, poor water quality, and poaching. According to Malinowski, available data shows that grouper populations in both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic have dropped in the last few years. For this reason, Malinowski and his colleagues strongly disagree with the idea of allowing a harvest on grouper populations in Florida, a controversial topic that has been considered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in the last few years. However, in early May, members of the commission board— appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis—voted in favor of taking steps to lift the ban on catching goliath grouper, based on their data showing increasing populations. The next step includes the commission’s staff drafting a formal proposal on how many fish could be caught, how licenses would be distributed, and any restrictions. “The commission is not making their decision based on the best available science, and it’s disappointing,” Malinowski said, who wrote a letter to the commission along with two colleagues and endorsed by more than 90 prominent scientists, which describes the fish’s vulnerability. “The bottom line is, goliath grouper cannot be fished and sustained.” Written by Bethany Augliere Photography by Nico Ientile

Cures from the Deep
I
n the depths of the ocean, soft-corals sway in the current, while sponges sit immobile and anchored to rocks. These animals may be the key to curing diseases such as Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and triple negative breast cancer, and that’s the mission of Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Marine Biomedical & Biotechnology Research Program. The drug discovery program was founded in 1984, and since then, scientists have amassed 30,000 samples of marine life to find potential disease fighting chemicals. “The sea is this huge resource that is largely untapped, unknown and potentially contains the cure for lots of different types of diseases,” said Peter McCarthy, Ph.D., a microbiologist at FAU’s Harbor Branch who is part of the program. “We need to get out there, we need to find these things.” In an era where antibacterial resistance is becoming an increasing problem, McCarthy’s work focuses on discovering new antibiotics, many times from sponges. “In the not too distant future—if not already—the majority of bacterial diseases will no longer be treated by antibiotics that exist at the moment.” McCarthy’s team has found sponges that show activity against the deadly MRSA, as well as a lesser-known bacterium that causes problems for people with cystic fibrosis and other diseases, known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. More than half of the cancer drugs currently being used for cancer treatment come from nature, said Esther Guzmán, Ph.D., who leads the Cancer Cell Research Lab that focuses on finding marine natural products with the ability to fight cancer. In pancreatic cancer—one of the world’s deadliest cancers—Guzmán found chemicals from a sponge right off Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale that reduces pancreatic tumor size. “The more research we do, the better our understanding of cancer, which increases our chances of finding new treatments” she said. Amy Wright, Ph.D., lead of the Natural Products Chemistry program, is responsible for taking the promising samples that McCarthy and Guzmán find, and further breaking them down to figure out exactly which compounds are responsible for the anti-cancer or antibacterial activity. In the past, scientists used the now retired Johnson Sea Link subs to dive down thousands of feet and scoop up the samples to bring back to the lab. Wright has 171 dives in the subs, calling it a “once in a lifetime experience, many times.” Now, the team collects most of the samples using remotely operated robots sent to the seafloor without ever leaving the deck of the ship. “It’s important to conserve the ocean and its biodiversity,” said Wright. But in order to do the work, “it’s also important for people to encourage their elected officials to support the funding of research aimed at discovering cures from the sea.”

ut health is often only thought about in terms of symptoms like bloating, gas, cramping and constipation or conditions like IBS, IBD, and diverticulitis. However, an unhealthy gut can be the trigger for many chronic health conditions, ranging from skin issues like eczema and acne, to autoimmune diseases like ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis. An abundance of research has now inextricably linked the health of the gut microbiome to neurological health, cognitive function, immune system regulation, respiratory conditions, autoimmune disease and mood disorders, like depression and anxiety. The gut microbiome is defined as the totality of microbes (bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa) and their collective genetic material present in your GI tract. The results are used to individualize a patient’s treatment plan. The Functional Medicine paradigm for gut treatment involves the 5R approach: • Remove: unhealthy bacteria, yeast, parasites and inflammatory foods • Replace: support digestion with enzymes, HCl, bile acids, bitters • Reinoculate: prebiotics and/or probiotics • Repair: gut lining health and gut immune function • Restore: stress management, sleep, exercise Case study: 38-year-old female with complaint of foul-smelling gas, severe bloating and constipation, with abdominal cramping after eating certain foods. Brain fog, irritability, and frequent acne breakouts. Sleep is interrupted with low energy in the afternoons. Occasional migraines. We ordered a GI-MAP, SIBO test (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and food sensitivity panel to ensure comprehensive treatment. Her results
showed overgrowth of many unhealthy microorganisms and impaired digestion. We eliminated foods she was highly sensitive to and advised a low FODMAPS food plan during treatment. Make the Most of Your Day at the Beach
T
he sea offers us an abundance of gifts. Whether you live here or are visiting, you have free access to the restorative powers of the ocean. Life flourishes near the edges, where the forest meets a meadow or a river, and especially at the beach, where the sea greets the land. The ecological concept of edges describes an abundance of biological diversity where two adjacent ecosystems overlap. The next time you visit the beach, take a few moments to be fully present so you can receive all the gifts nature has to offer. Here are a few invitations to consider. Awaken Your Senses Find a comfortable place to sit in the sand, near the water, but safely away from the crashing waves. Begin by closing your eyes, or keep your gaze soft. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Notice how the sun and sea air greet your skin. Dig your toes into the sand. Listen without judgement to the natural and man-made sounds. You might notice the waves crashing, birds calling, or children laughing. It’s all part of the symphony of this place. Tilt your head up to the sky and breathe deeply through your nose, inhaling the scent of the ocean. Does it evoke a memory or an emotion? Inhale through your mouth as if you’re sipping the air through a straw. What flavors are revealed? Can you taste the sea? Take a moment to listen to your heart. What is it saying in this moment?

If your heart could set an intention for this visit to the sea, what might that be? When you’re ready, gently open your eyes and let the world reveal itself to you as if you’ve never seen it before. What are you noticing? Gratitude Before you leave, take a moment to acknowledge and give thanks for the pleasurable experiences you encountered at the beach. Chances are, you’re leaving feeling a little more peaceful than you arrived. Consider how you might give back to the land and sea for holding this space for you. Tying the Knot
H
utchinson Island holds a very special place in my heart, so when thinking about our wedding plans, it seemed like the perfect spot to get married. I’ve been visiting the island since I was born. My grandpa bought a condo here back in the 80s, and it’s been passed down through our family ever since. Matt and I met in early 2017, and have visited North Hutchinson Island many times. It was important to incorporate my parents’ boat in our wedding day, as it is meaningful to me. My brother has put his heart and soul into restoring their 1973 22’ Mako. Since Matt and I love to fish, and the sunsets on the intracoastal are second-to-none, the wedding plans were set. Sunset photos on the boat seemed like a natural, obvious choice. I was so thrilled when our photographer, Emily Clinton, captured these stunning photos of us on our sunset boat cruise after our wedding. My brother captained us out on my parents’ restored boat, we jammed to our favorite music, danced to a setting sun, and had an absolute blast. This area has always been a special place to me, and I’m so glad I’ve gotten to share it with my (now) husband and let it become a special place for us, together. I keep revisiting the photos and reliving our wedding day over and over in my head, and one word comes to mind: pure joy! Our day was filled with so much love, fun, and happiness. We are so thankful to our families and friends for celebrating with us, and we look forward to a lifetime of sunset cruises around Hutchinson Island.
