editor’s note

O THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. I used to plan our next vacation destination before we ever got home from the one we were on… that was before we moved to paradise. My friends that truly know me know that every day I pinch myself to make sure I haven’t already died and gone to heaven. Life is sooooooooo good in Vero. I stopped planning vacations the day we moved here. Why would I go somewhere else to sit on another beach when I can enjoy the beauty that surrounds us all? Snorkeling? Got it. Diving? Yep, that too. Boating? Check. Deep-sea fishing? Um, yes, that too. Beautiful beach resorts? Absolutely! In this issue, there is inspiration for you to take local day trips or to be adventurous and try “glamping” (yes, glamour + camping). Make sure you visit Sebastian Inlet State Park and Long Point Park; both are great local places to visit (or go glamping)! We stalked a few vintage Airstream campers for our photo shoots. Airstreams are appropriately dubbed “the Land Yacht” (and now I am crushing on owning one for myself!) Think of the fun you can have! It’s fun for the entire family! We take a look at townhome life – where the living is stunning. Whether you’re looking for ideas for entertaining the family, a romantic “staycation” island getaway without getting on a plane, or where to get a portable picnic, you’ll find the answers in our latest edition of Portfolio. Long live summertime,

When it comes to vacations, families have always loved the great outdoors.

Fishing, camping, surfing, diving and boating are great things to do right here in Vero Beach. Glamorous camping lets you visit the outdoors, but in an updated and upscale way. While glamping is sometimes caricatured as over-the-top luxury (think butlers with bug spray), its real potential is in making “roughing it” a little less rough but still affordable. It’s outdoorsy, but has a good mix of the comforts of home. Glampers get a feeling of being close to nature and most parks have plenty of activities for the whole family. It isn’t so cushy that you feel insulated from nature; it’s a nice alternative to being “in” nature. The glamping experience is as varied as the landscapes they inhabit. Florida State Parks offer such a variety of camp settings.

Do you “dig” fossils and the great outdoors?

!

Be urous ent v d A

To schedule your dig, call Fred Mazza at (772) 539-7005 or check them out online at www.paleodiscoveries.com.

18 July-August 2013

If so, take a trip back in time and try fossil hunting! You can use a screen sifter or snorkel in one of Florida’s shallow rivers or streams and find remains of ancient sharks, whales, dolphins, fish, saber-tooth cats, jaguars, mammoths, mastodons, camels, tapirs, horses, sloths, giant armadillos and so much more. We joined Fred Mazza, owner of Paleo Discoveries on a day trip to dig for fossils. We left town around 7:45am and arrived at the Peace River near a town called Wauchula. After launching our canoes into the cool, clear, sandy bottom river, we paddled a short distance through what looked like a Jurassic Park movie set. We would have been happy just paddling along the river all day, it was so interesting and beautiful. We then beached our canoes and hopped into the water with our shovels and screen sifters to begin our first dig. After just one scoop of the shovel, score! We found prehistoric shark teeth! We dug for hours in various spots where Fred has had some amazing finds. His tour was perfect for us, especially considering that we had some newbies to fossil-hunting in the group. Fred has a huge passion for what he does and extensive knowledge about these fossils. He encouraged our questions, which helped make it an incredibly educational experience. The tour meandered back up-stream and we eventually ended up back where we had launched. It was such a great day, and we were able to literally take our memories home with us, as you get to keep everything you dig up (bring a bag because it’s a lot)! Who says history lessons are boring?! Be sure and pack a picnic, plenty of water and sunscreen. Fred offers walk-in or canoe fossil tours. These tours generally take place on the Peace River in the towns of Zolfo Springs, Wauchula and Arcadia. It’s about a 2 hour ride from Vero. Discover your own piece of history– one that you can actually hold in your hand! Unlike a fishing trip, you’ll always come home with something- these day trips are safe, fun and educational. Experience genuine Florida eco-tourism. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Squash

Growing in Popularity

t got its name from the ball’s “squishiness” as it hit the wall. The primary objective of this sport, both in the singles and the doubles form of the game, is to strike this soft, small ball with a racquet, off the walled court. The shot must be played in such a way that the ball bounces off the floor exactly once before it reaches the other player for a shot or can be volleyed in the air. Not enough time in your life to regularly play a sport? Think again. Playing squash develops speed, endurance, agility, coordination and court savvy, yet the average recreational match lasts less than 40 minutes. It is one of the fastest and most athletic sports. The popularity of the sport is due to the intensely competitive workout it generates in such a short time. Squash is the perfect sport for busy people! Squash is relatively simple to learn to play, yet very difficult to actually master. Basically, you hit a small ball against the front wall of a room so it is out of reach of your opponent. The challenge is achieving this goal against the more skilled opponents as your game improves. It’s physically and mentally draining but in the end, you’ll be pleased, enthusiastic and probably just a little tired! John’s Island Club has the only North American Doubles Court in the entire state of Florida along with one international singles court. The club has hosted an invitational doubles tournament for its members for the last seven years. This past April, the club hosted the first professional prize money doubles event in the state of Florida. The tournament was the $25,000.00 John’s Island WDSA Open. This tournament featured the top ladies from North America and Europe. The squash facility has added another dimension to the offerings here at John’s Island and it has attracted many people to the club over the last few years. The sport’s popularity has been steadily rising over the last twenty years and it is currently in the running to be selected as an Olympic sport. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

O

nce again, Dr. Paul V. Minotty and Dr. Stephen M. Tate, board certified ophthalmologists and cataract surgeons, have brought another innovation to New Vision Eye Center. The Cataract Institute at New Vision Eye Center is the first and only practice on the Treasure Coast to offer the newest and most exacting procedure, Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery. This team of fellowship trained, board certified physicians continue to dedicate themselves to offering the latest technology to our community. Dr. Minotty commented, “This is truly a milestone; the most exciting thing to happen in the last 40 years in the realm of cataract surgery. The laser for cataract surgery offers more predictable outcomes while affording more comfort to the patient.” The LenSx laser is an advanced, precision based technology that operates with unmatched precision to further customize the individualized procedure. Dr. Stephen Tate stated, “by adding computer aided preciseness to the key steps of cataract surgery, the LenSx laser ensures the highest level of precision for surgical incisions.” Dr. Minotty further explains, “the laser provides a more precise circular incision around the cataract, improving the accuracy during placement of the intraocular lens implant and leads to a greater predictability for patient outcomes. The laser pre-softens the cataract, allowing surgeons to minimize the use of ultrasound energy to remove the cataract from the eye. This allows for faster recovery. Also, astigmatism correction can be done simultaneously during cataract surgery using the LenSx laser system.” Dr. Minotty conducted extensive investigation into the various lasers available and selected the LenSx for its performance and precision. The professional staff at the Cataract Institute at New Vision Eye Center attended extensive training for this new technology. Together with Dr. Roger J. Meyer, Dr. David J. O’Brien, and Dr. Paul L. Winslow, Drs. Minotty and Tate provide a wide range of comprehensive eye care in a new, state-of-the-art facility, just across from Indian River Medical Center.

eeling exhausted? Run down? Sluggish? Does the thought of planning a long weekend vacation seem like too much of an effort? Do you sometimes come back from a vacation feeling more tired, stressed and unhealthy from overindulging than when you left? This summer, consider a long weekend ‘staycation’ where you focus all of your energy and effort on rejuvenating your mind, body and spirit. You may return with a renewed energy and sunnier outlook on life! There are many benefits of skipping the hassle of travel and discovering a complete retreat where you live. Create a break from the daily grind and embrace the opportunity to un-plug, de-stress, and invigorate your body. Moms, grandmas, working ladies, caregivers…find a way to snag two to four days to yourself and invite a positive companion. Plan just as if you were planning a long weekend away. Send the kids to a camp, take a few days off work and turn off your cell phone and laptop. Plan a way to nourish yourself from head to toe. Abolish cravings by doing a brief juice detox; many different options exist to match your objectives. Schedule a manicure, pedicure, massage or whatever makes you feel pampered. Book an acupuncture session to restore balance to your body. In addition to relieving pain and other health concerns, acupuncture calms the mind, body, and spirit. It also increases energy, improves sleep, and helps your body be resilient to stress. Skip the television and rent funny movies or find a spiritual book to inspire you and open new horizons. Try that new yoga or Pilates class. Write all your worries and tasks down in a notebook and close the cover prior to your ‘staycation.’ Promise yourself that you will deal with them when you ‘return’. Here at Indian River Acupuncture we can help you make the most of your ‘staycation’ with nutritional detox consultations, emotional release work to ‘let go of all your baggage’ and acupuncture to help you unwind. Chill Out!

N

othing beats an ice cold popsicle on a hot summer day no matter how old you are! If you are concerned that your taste buds have outgrown the big stick, think again! We have good news! Popsicles are cooler and healthier than ever, thanks to an innovative vendor, Michael Haggerty, founder of Hero Pops. He’s pushing the proverbial wrapper and has just launched a new product called Pond Yum! It is made with spirulina which has been called a “miracle” plant. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids, antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage. It contains nutrients, including B complex vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E, manganese, zinc, copper, iron, selenium, and essential fatty acids. By just adding one frozen bar of Pond Yum a day to your fresh juice, smoothie or to 8 ounces of water will kill any sugar/carb cravings you have and will keep you full for hours. There are many health benefits to consuming spirulina daily. Pond Yum is also available in frozen popsicles with assorted natural flavors too! Why not fill it with cherished memories and unique, handmade pieces of art that will make you want to be there? That is the philosophy behind Coulter Designs’ new line of concrete outdoor accessories, which includes: custom fire pits, benches, tables, flowerpots, birdbaths, and more. Showcased daily at the Coulter Designs studio on 14th Avenue in the historic arts district of Downtown Vero, the fire pits add warmth and charm to the exterior of this unique gallery. Each fire pit, distinctly different from the next, is a functional piece of art. To help customize these fire pits, clients often use their own collections; what better way to showcase one’s treasures! Beyond selecting what accents will adorn their new fire pit, customers are encouraged to choose their own colors, and shapes that will best compliment their outdoor living space. “We’ve done fire pits that are filled with couple’s collections of shells and sea glass from their travels; even coins,” boasts the innovative artisan Richard Coulter. Aside from personal collections, Coulter Designs has recently started to accent these fire basins, both large and small, with various colors of glow stones Coulter Designs that illuminate for hours into the night; adding allure even when they are not in use. 1865 14th Ave. Whether you plan to roast marshmallows or simply sit back and sip your favorite wine, the Vero Beach, FL 32960 comfort and serenity these fire pits can add to your home is unmatched. The only place you’ll (772) 569-7099 want to beon a breezy summer’s night is by your fire; admiring all you have to be thankful for. www.coulterdesigns.com

Paradise Found

Condo living has its perks; especially a penthouse condo at The Moorings with an expansive and spectacular view. This is what my clients bought when they settled into their Florida condo. Walls were taken out and replaced with triple pane windows from floor to ceiling to capture breathtaking sunsets. On those breezy Florida days when the sea breeze from the Atlantic makes you want to leave the windows open, it creates a tropical ambiance as well. The interior design needed to reflect the stunning view of The Moorings marina and have a casual/easy feeling. Florida condo living should have that feeling of when you walk in the front door; you know you are in paradise. All upholstery should be slip covered for easy maintenance and flexibility. The owners acquired two fabulous hand carved birds from James Seamen that needed to be in the spotlight. We created a special mirrored space for “Lily,” the white heron who makes a great greeter for when you enter the condo. The owners wanted everything to revolve around the view that captures you at once. They are from Ithaca, NY, where the winter weather can be difficult; so when they come to Vero they simply want to relax and enjoy our sunny climate and breathtaking views. Isn’t that what condo living is all about? No maintenance, put on your sandals and t-shirts and just slow down! While you are away, leave me with a design “to-do” list to be completed. When you return it’s a wonderful surprise to find everything refreshed, just the way you want it. Now that’s what I call “condo living” at its best! Once upon a time, a girl met a boy. They fell deeply in love; he proposed and their fairytale began in the midst of bustling wedding vendor selection. However, when it came to invitations, the girl – a graphic design studio owner by trade – could not find any suite that could be uniquely their own. There was nothing that really gave a hint about their lives that they were about to unite and celebrate. So she made her own… She enjoyed it so sincerely; she continued creating for other brides, rapidly garnering a reputation for innovative design and a knack for realizing her client’s vision. Thus, Peach Leaf Paperie was born - from Mandy Robinson’s deep passion for paper and desire to weave the sweet stories of each client into a tapestry of stationery. Over the past five years, the award-winning studio has worked with clients on custom suites, both local and nationwide, as well as dreaming up collections to be launched this fall. Balancing cutting-edge techniques with traditional flair, Peach Leaf Paperie fashions everything from simple save the dates and birth announcements to custom logos and intricate laser-cut wedding invitations nestled into boxes. Mandy’s goal is to translate ideas to paper with a wow factor and to set the tone for the special soirees. The studio has printed on wood, sent invitations with shells, wrapped foiled pieces with custom-printed ribbon,

“Life itself is the most wonderful fairytale of all.” ~ Hans Christian Andersen presented luxurious letterpressed pieces, used lottery-ticket cuteness to add pizzazz to a Vegas wedding and created unique monograms that now embellish the towels of clients. If you can dream it, Peach Leaf Paperie can make it a reality. Mandy and the company have grown with their clients, forming strong friendships and assisting in life’s momentous milestones – marriage, showers, and children. “It is a true privilege to design these keepsakes,” Mandy says. “And to be invited on a person’s life journey time and time again – watching families blossom - is unbelievably rewarding.” It was once said, “a blank page represents endless opportunity.” Peach Leaf Paperie takes this to heart, hand-crafting each element, infusing it with a unique design that tells the story of the event for which it is carefully created. Whether for the union of two lovebirds, a print to adorn the walls of a home, the birth of a child, or simply social stationery that leaves an impression, Peach Leaf Paperie joyfully grows invitations for life’s celebrations. ne of the greatest shell finds is a perfectly intact whelk shell. You’ll pick it up, carry it all the way home, and find that perfect little place for it. I bet you think that’s where the story of this shell finally ends, living happily ever after on your bookshelf. But the truth is, the story of this shell ended long before you found it. Depending on the size and type of whelk shell you found, the story of your shell could have begun up to twenty years ago. Somewhere in the great expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, a mother whelk laid an egg string containing up to 6,000 of her babies. Thirteen months later, only a few of the mollusks hatched with their shells perfectly formed, including the one that once lived in the shell on your bookshelf. To gain strength, the baby whelk in your shell had to eat many of the un-hatched eggs, a gruesome turn of events if you ask me, but who I am to judge something with 5,999 siblings. Your shell spent its days as the home of this one mollusk protecting it from predators. As the whelk inside of it began to grow, so did your shell, with the help of the whelk. Through calcium carbonate secretions, the whelk was able to not only make its shell bigger, but it was able to repair it after any sort of damage. Together, the shell and the whelk traveled all throughout the sea, living in warm coastal waters but migrating offshore to deeper water during the extremes of winter and summer. Days turned to months and months turned to years and one day the whelk had to say goodbye to its shell to go to “whelk heaven”. This is where the story of your shell truly ends, as its purpose in nature and the cycle of life had been fulfilled. The shell gave way to the mercy of the sea and it was pushed onto the Vero Beach shore. Then one fine day, you came along and plucked it off of the beach, giving new purpose and life to the old whelk shell with an unknown past.

GUARDIANS OF THE SEA

T

here is a misconception that lifeguards sit in the tower all day, watch girls and get a tan. Did you know that Jaycee Park, Humiston and South Beach Parks have almost 800,000 visitors each year? In fact, in 2012, our lifeguards made 30 rescues, was the first to respond in 14 major and 402 minor medical incidents. Oh yeah, there were also 1,500 “Preventative Actions” performed last year too. In the summer of 2011 when the City of Vero Beach recommended to eliminate lifeguards at some of its three beach parks and reduce the guarded hours at others, city lifeguards Jordan Farrow, Tim Capra and Erik Toomsoo decided that something needed to be done. They formed the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association, a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization with a mission to promote lifeguarding and water safety in Vero Beach and the surrounding area. Its 25 members are made up of lifeguards, concerned citizens and community activists. Membership is free and anyone is welcome to join. Being proactive, the VBLA started holding fundraisers to raise money for equipment that lifeguards needed in order to do their jobs more effectively. The group has hosted numerous events such as concerts, beach runs, bodysurfing contests, produced lifeguard swimsuit calendars, paintings of each beach park tower and soon, the 1st Annual VBLA ocean swim race. To date, the organization has raised over $10,000. The Rotary Club of Vero Beach, 4-H Club of Indian River County and various other businesses and individuals have showed a great deal of support. The association also conducts free water safety classes for local organizations within the community such as Beachland Elementary School, Indian River Homeschool Association and the Environmental Learning Center among others.

For more information on the organization, visit www.vbla.org or email them at VeroBeachLA@yahoo.com.

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach and find a trash can. Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.
