Splash into Summer! Wake up your inner child again! It’s time to relax and PLAY! Unplug from your day-to-day routines and live a little! Enjoy this beautiful paradise we call home. This issue, we are diving into summer! We live in one of the most amazing places in Florida. People visit Vero Beach to soak up the sunshine, play in the surf, go fishing, paddling, or just chill out at the beach. Try something new this summer. What are you waiting for? We are so fortunate to be able to walk right off the beach and go snorkeling or diving to the many underwater reefs we have offshore. This summer, why not wake up early and watch a sunrise? And, have you checked out one of our amazing sunsets? Wow! I wish it could be summertime forever. Don’t forget to grab your sunblock when you head outdoors (we love Sun Bum!) You’ll love reading about Anita Prentice; she’s determined to paint the town! We also loved exploring areas with her that we had never been before. Summertime is a great time to eat outdoors. Grab some gourmet to go from Chelsea’s Market, or fresh shrimp, fish, or a local favorite is the crab dip from Rhonda’s Seafood, now open on Royal Palm. It’s exciting to see new businesses opening all the time! At Portfolio, we love being on or near the water. There is something about the sound of the ebb and flow rhythm of the waves, or how staring out into a blank horizon clears your mind. Being near or around water always seems to make me feel relaxed, healthy and invigorated. Luckily, we are surrounded by beautiful water. I hope we take care of it and preserve it. Early morning “board” meetings are the BEST (wink, wink)! See you at the beach!

Surfing at Sixty...Yes, You Can! I am a very happy, healthy, active sixty-one year old, full-time pediatrician. I love yoga, surfing my Magic nine-foot Walden Wahine surfboard, here in Vero Beach, and also in our home in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. I started surfing at the age of forty-four, as I didn’t want to just sit on the beach while our kids surfed! My husband, Chuck Evans, is the Assistant Principal at Oslo Middle School. We married on March 29, 2007, and have a wonderful blended family who truly love one another. Our kids surf and travel with us as often as they can. Our son, Christopher O’Toole, lives in Miami, our daughter, Melissa, and her husband, Tarik, live in Jacksonville, and our son, Connor, lives in St. Petersburg. We are all about family. This summer, my brother and one of his daughters, will join us in our rustic cabins in the rainforest of Costa Rica for surfing, yoga, and Pura Vida! I still love the practice of pediatrics and work with wonderful partners, Genevieve Mallon and Jessica D’Elia at Island Pediatrics. We are affiliated with Nemours Children’s Hospital. Every day I spend with my patients’ brings me great joy! I just performed in Dancing With Vero’s Stars for Healthy Start Coalition where we raised over $329,000 for the moms and babies of Indian River County. I was supported by my family, staff, and friends! I dressed in early 60’s East Coast Swing outfits to support Team Susie, which raised over $30,000! Life is very, very good! I went skydiving... I jumped from a plane at 13,500 feet. Check mark added to my summer bucket list. The reservation was confirmed the night before, and the excitement was like that of a kid anticipating Christmas! Waking up the next morning, I felt completely calm, with no expectations of fear or nervousness, just an adrenaline rush of anticipation! I arrived at Skydiving Sebastian simply happy. After signing my life away, I met my tandem buddy, Tim. The man whom I would put my life in his hands, literally, as he controlled my parachute. He rigged me up in straps that he would later connect to himself, and briefed me on a few simple things to remember. Twelve of us boarded the small aircraft and lined the floor in two orderly lines. I sat toward the back of the plane with my tandem buddy now firmly attached to my back, and my cameraman, Craig, seated in a V-formation in front of me. At what point do I get nervous? We’d be jumping in less than 5 minutes! Within a matter of seconds, I was on the edge of the doorway of the plane staring at the Earth below. Remembering my directions, I did exactly as instructed. This was it! My arms spread open wide. I was completely aware of the beauty surrounding me. I was surrounded by the color blue. Instantly, everything slowed down and we began to gently float through the sky. Calm, quiet, joy engulfed me. A reminder of the cannonball position landing was spoken into my ear and with the most gentle steps, my feet touched the ground. Pure happiness. I went skydiving! I jumped from a plane! It was a life-changing experience, and I could do it again and again. Skydive Sebastian May 14, 2015 Jill Douglas

? n u S e h t Love Trust Sun Bum with all your sun and hair care needs this summer!

Whether you’re a pro surfer or a bona fide beach bum, chances are, you’re not one to sit out a hot, sunny day. But in a world where one in five of us will get skin cancer due to sun exposure, you can’t afford to be as lazy about sun protection as you are about getting out of that beach chair. When you live and love in the sun, you need the protection trusted by the premier sun bums of our time: surfers, lifeguards, swimmers—the guys (and girls) who are out there every day braving waves and UV rays. That’s where Sun Bum comes in—a sun care collection specifically formulated for people who have banned “indoors” from their vocabulary.

Sun Bum® Beach Formula Hair Care Collection If you’re like us, you love to live and play in the sun, but sometimes the combination of hitting the salty waves and being outdoors can make for some knotty, not-so-nice strands. Designed to protect and perfect, and maybe even fake that magical beachy surf hair, Sun Bum® has created a new line of Beach Formula Hair Care products infused with a blend of beneficial botanicals. Each product helps to provide UV protection and is infused with Coconut Oil, Banana Leaf pulp and peel, Quinoa Protein, and Sesame Seed Oil. Oh, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, each product smells like an endless summer featuring Sun Bum’s signature Coconut, Vanilla, and Banana blended fragrance. www.trustthebum.com

Surf’s Up for Bethany Hamilton She’s Diving into the Next Chapter of Life as a New Mom

I

t has been 12 years since news was released of a thirteen-year-old girl who lost her left arm to a fourteen-foot tiger shark on the island of Kauai. Since that day, Bethany Hamilton’s story of hope and resilience has spread worldwide as inspiration to anyone looking to overcome their trials. The life-changing event was immortalized in the 2011 film “Soul Surfer,” and will continue with Bethany’s upcoming biographical documentary, “Surfs Like A Girl.” At the time of writing this, Bethany and her husband, married August 2013, welcomed a little baby boy into their family. Bethany partnered with Buckle for a meet-and-greet in The Mall at Millenia in Orlando. The crowd had the opportunity to hear the Soul Surfer’s amazing story and a few lucky Cobian Sandal customers got to meet her one-on-one. Cobian Sandals are Bethany’s new line, which 26

directs a portion of its profits to the shark attack survivor non-profit, “Friends of Bethany.” When asked why sharing her experience is so important to her, Bethany is quoted saying, “I’ve found that in my life I’ve been able to overcome so much through my passions- my passion to surf and my faith in God, which are the two things I’m most passionate about. So I’m encouraging girls to chase after their passions so they can overcome, too.” Bethany has a huge fan base, especially among young women. Having just turned twenty-five, the surfer role model dives into the next chapter of her life as a mother, and we wish her all the luck in the world. By Chloe Johnson Photos by Dwayne Fleming

Fired Up! Hot Summer Days are Here at Last. Remember to Hydrate!

S

ummer is here! Days are longer and hotter. Vacations are on the horizon. You may notice yourself becoming more energetic and having a little more pep in your step. You may feel more sociable, joyous, lively, open, and active during the summer months. According to Chinese medicine, the vibrancy of summer is due to a peak in Yang energy, and the expression of the Fire Element through the heart organ. When the Fire element expresses itself in a person, they will be great communicators, alert, charismatic, and enjoy intimacy and a connection with others. Fire types have high energy, even when it’s hot outside. If you are predominantly a Fire type, you should remember to appreciate these characteristics that come naturally to you and make the most of your heart energy. Others who are not constitutional Fire types can still benefit from the increased Yang energy of summer. Use the extra Yang energy to awaken earlier in the morning, when the sun rises, and go to bed when it gets dark. Enjoy the longer days. Be active, but do not over-exercise. When you exercise, stay hydrated and watch for signs of facial flushing and excessive sweating. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Electrolytes and oils are lost through sweat, and their loss can cause weakness and even serious life-threatening conditions if not replaced by fluids and a proper diet. During the summer, consume foods that can cool summer heat. Examples of foods that keep you cool are salads, sprouts, cucumbers, watermelon, apples, coconut water, and chrysanthemum and chamomile tea. Make sure to avoid heavy fried foods that can cause sluggishness. Also, certain spices can bring interior body heat to the surface. Use these foods sporadically in the summer: red and green hot peppers, fresh ginger, and horseradish. In Chinese Medicine, the five elements keep each other in balance. From this philosophy, the Water Element keeps the Fire Element in balance. Since summer can bring out exaggerated elements of the Fire personality, being near water during the summer can be a grounding experience. In addition to the above, acupuncture can help keep us in good balance during the summer season. Select acupuncture points help to maintain balanced energy in the heart and its complementary organ, kidney. Plan a visit to our office to explore how we can help you feel your best! Luxury Beach Service Comes to Costa d’Este Come to stay or just play for the day!

I

n 1987, Steven Boucher was hired as the pool manager at the Newport Beach Resort in Sunny Isles Beach, FL. It was soon after that he and his brothers, Jim, Michael, and Perry saw an opportunity to start a business working in an atmosphere that they had loved growing up. All four brothers were raised in Miami, and spent almost every weekend at the beach and sneaking onto pool decks when they could. It was through Steven’s position that they saw a niche that they could grow into a business. They decided they would offer local hotels fantastic service for their guests on their pool and beach. They knew that the way to get into these hotels would be to service their guests to a level that made them feel special, regardless of the hotel they were staying at. Over the past twenty-eight years, we have grown from this one property in Sunny Isles to sixty properties in metropolitan Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Naples, St Petersburg, Clearwater, Vero Beach, Virginia Beach (VA) and San Diego (CA). Our properties include notable hotels such as, The Ritz-Carlton, W, Delano and Del Coronado, just to name a few. In addition, we operate municipal beach concession contracts for Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County, Fort Lauderdale, Virginia Beach (VA) and Chicago (IL). We also offer watersports, including WaveRunner rentals, parasailing, and group team-building events. We coordinate beach activities for groups as few as ten and up to as many as one-thousand. To this day, the one word that describes Boucher Brothers is “service.” Over the past twenty-eight years, we have worked with vendors to offer the most aesthetically pleasing, comfortable equipment. Equipment is 30

July-August 2015

arranged in a precise manner to give it a feeling of tranquility and relaxation. Employees are trained to answer the guests every whim. The pool and beach areas are kept clean throughout the day. In essence we ensure that a guest’s stay at the pool and/or beach is as good as it can possibly be. In March of 2014, we started beach services at Costa d’Este Beach Resort in Vero Beach. We offer lounges, umbrellas, cabanas, beach beds, and floating lounge areas to the hotel guests and to the public. Each lounge comes with a two-inch cushion, and each bed comes with a four-inch cushion to make it the most comfortable beach experience. Gone are the days of the uncomfortable steamer or fold-out beach chairs. Richie, our manager, ensures that everyone (guest or local) feels as though they are at a five-star resort. The hotel also offers food and beverage services. It is the perfect way to spend a relaxing day at the beach! If you want a little more activity during your beach stay, we have recently begun offering watersports rentals. These include stand-up paddleboards, single and tandem kayaks, a four-person sea cycle, snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, and skim boards. Richie leads sunrise paddleboard and kayak tours daily. We are very excited to have expanded into the City of Vero Beach, and we look forward to offering hotel guests and locals our superior brand of service for many years to come! The entire family has grown up in Vero Beach, graduating from Vero Beach High School, and returning here after college. Christian, who is the middle brother out of five, will mostly handle the day-to-day operations of running Chelsea’s. He is also an adventurer at heart. He loves traveling and eating great food. His siblings have always talked about operating an Italian deli with light fare to compliment his parents’ fine dining establishment, Trattoria Dario, on South Beach. Having worked with his family since he was old enough to do so, he takes great pride in making sure to provide the absolute best customer service possible, in addition to serving the freshest, healthiest-tasting food. Meals should be savored, and enjoyed while sitting around the table with great friends, great wine, and great food! Expect the same greatness that Chelsea’s has built its reputation on and that you have known from the previous owner, David Busch. “I am excited to watch Chelsea’s move into a new era with such a bright and talented young man as Christian. With their family having great roots in the culinary industry, I know Chelsea’s will continue to be one of the greatest places for friends and family to meet for a great dining experience.” Christian hopes to bring breakfast to Chelsea’s along with introducing a few new menu items as well. They also plan to extend their hours to Sundays. It’s the perfect place to stop and grab all that you need to take to the beach or on your boat for a day of fun outdoors. Chelsea’s offers so many choices from gourmet sandwiches to ready-made salads, desserts, drinks, and so much more! Stop by and say “hello.” It’s business as usual for Chelsea’s Market on Cardinal. Fishy Business Rhonda’s Seafood is Now Open on Royal Palm

C

ommercial fishing was a way of life for Rhonda, who recently opened Rhonda’s Seafood on Royal Palm. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Thompson, originated from Ohio, and were commercial fishermen in Port Salerno since 1963. Rhonda’s grandma once said that “sunshine made us come to Florida. We came to get away from those snowballs up there.” Having grown up with four brothers, Rhonda’s parents had plenty of help when it came to fishing. She grew up surrounded by fish and lobster. At the early age of seven years-old, Rhonda’s family lived in Stuart, where she often helped her mom clean and scale fish. She also helped her dad with fishing! To this day, Rhonda is very knowledgeable about seafood, and getting the freshest fish available from the local fishing market and her suppliers. She often makes a daily run to Port Salerno where her family owns a fish market and local restaurant. Over the years, Rhonda lived in the Panhandle where her family owned and operated Carabelle Seafood, an oyster and shrimp house. She has also lived in Louisiana, where they also had a fish house. Upon meeting Rhonda, you’ll at once realize she can cook, clean and answer pretty much any question about any seafood. Rhonda started out with a produce stand on Highway 60 in Vero Beach, and continued that for over eight years. Then, on Saturdays at the Farmer’s Market on Ocean Drive, and in season, at the original Village Shoppes. Now, you can find her most days at her new store, Rhonda’s Seafood Market located on Royal Palm. Rhonda offers only the freshest seafood for her customers. She takes great pride in her product—she’ll even steam your shrimp for you if you ask her nicely! While you wait, sample her homemade Mahi smoked fish dip. It’s delicious! Rhonda frequently has fresh field tomatoes and other local

produce from nearby farms. She also stocks locally made chips and salsa. Did I mention pie? If you love homemade pies, Rhonda has a sweet side too! She specializes in making over twenty-three different varieties of pie! Her favorite sellers are key lime (of course!), coconut crème, chocolate mousse, and peanut butter. The pineapple orange pie is so refreshing and perfect on a hot summer day! Stop in and say “hello” to Rhonda and her daughter. Grab some fresh fish, shrimp, produce or even pie. They’ll take care of all your seafood needs! She’s Painting the Town!

M

y first mosaic was a six-foot long Sailfish mount. People would always bring me things, wonderful crazy things, and this fish was one of them. They found it in a dumpster outside of a closed restaurant, and brought it to me, broken and messed up. I wanted to cover the fish with more than just paint. That’s how I became a mosaic artist. I started with gluing mirror to this fish— you don’t have bad luck breaking the mirror if you do it on purpose! In fact, the next piece was a Snook, also mosaic with mirror, but I needed the black line that runs from tip to tip on a Snook. I called a stained glass artist for the black glass, and this was my intro into stained glass. I use the glass like paint... little strokes of color. Stained glass or church glass comes in so many colors and blends of colors. I love saturated color. What is “too much?” I also wanted to use color in the grout. Since I am self- taught, I tried many different ways to color the grout but it always seemed dull. Then, one day I realized I should let the grout dry. It needed to get “thirsty” again so as to accept the paint. It’s really a wax on wax off. I paint the areas whatever color I want. Once I have grouted the piece, I truly think of my work as a painted mosaic. Nature inspires me. I know that sounds all odd, but it’s true. I love to research wildlife and the land around us. I am a history buff and I am inspired by the people that made it happen. Since I studied music and theater, music is very visual to me. The way a song writer turns a certain phrase can open up many images in my head. I am looking forward to doing some abstract in glass, and another that uses these images in my head from music, in an upcoming show. I study certain songs while I work. Sometimes, being a singer keeps my hands free. Awhile back, I was in a show with fellow artist, Ginny Piech Street, at the Greyhound Bus Station in Clarksdale, MS, Home of the Blues. The show was in conjunction with the Delta Blues Museum. That was a show I always wanted to do! So I guess life inspires me, so many elements, so much beauty. I am so thankful to be doing this art form. Speaking of history, this is a very old art form and it has made a comeback. Plus I don’t have a Plan B! This is the ABC’s down to the XYZ. And YES! I do intend to paint the town! By Anita Prentice www.anitaprenticeart.com Photo by Tracey Floyd

The Story of Franny Flinn As Cute as the Clothes She Makes

S

ummer is upon us and as the heat index soars, it’s nice to find cute and stylish outfits for our little beach babes that are also cool and comfortable too! If you love to support products made in the U.S.A., you’ll really love that these adorable clothes are handmade right here in Vero Beach! So whether you live here year-round or just vacation here, make sure your little ones take home a few of Franny Flinn’s handmade cuteness to wherever you call home. Shortly after her granddaughter, Charlie, was born in 2009, Franny made up her mind that she was going to make her a dress. Franny never had a daughter of her own, so she was not about to let the opportunity pass her by. Without telling anyone what she was up to, she dusted off her old sewing machine and created the “flip” dress. After it was made, it didn’t take long for the trend-setting style to catch on. It seemed like overnight Franny had orders from people everywhere; she knew that her fun little “project” for her granddaughter was turning into a thriving and demanding business. Cute, comfy kids clothes for boys and girls from age six months and up was her specialty. All handmade in Vero Beach. The line currently includes tunics, tunic dresses, shorts for boys, as well as reversible dresses and reversible overalls. They are all made from 100% cotton fabrics and are machine washable. Franny draws from her own casual, yet sophisticated style, and translates it into everyday children’s fashions. Franny and her husband, Rusty, have lived in Vero Beach for generations. They have three adult sons: Rusty, Ryan and Stevie, and two beautiful grandchildren, Charlie and Cash. With the help of her sons Stevie, who has a degree in Fashion Design, and Rusty, who works in Finance, they have joined forces to make what is sure to be the next big name in children’s fashion.

How did you get the name Franny Flinn? My maiden name is Flinn, so it just kind of fit. Did living by the sea inspire you at all in your designs, especially the first design of the flip dress? Absolutely! It’s all about light, cool, and comfy clothing. My designs are simple, yet fashionable children’s clothing. They are so easy to put on and easy to take off! What makes your clothes different? Every piece of Franny Flinn clothing is handmade by me. Every stitch. The line is not mass-produced in some factory in some other country. Each design is created and stitched by hand…mine. I love making clothes for my granddaughter and grandson— they inspire me. Where can we find Franny Flinn clothes? Locally, you can shop at Lily Pad or the boutique at Vero Beach Hotel & Spa. Of course, we have a website as well so you can order them online too!

Gather Around It’s Summertime

W

onderful things happen when we gather around the table. Summertime is the perfect time to eat dinner outside. It’s a time for families to sit together without rushing around to school activities. With all the rage of farm tables, Snow’s can make yours one-of-a-kind. Whether it is a big farm-style or a small delicate table, some of the best memories are made gathered around a table. Summer is a time for BBQ’s and outdoor fun. Your outdoor living space can be just as important as your indoor space. Living in sunny Vero Beach gives us the opportunity to gather outside almost everyday. At Snow’s Custom Cabinetry, we can construct tables of many varieties We can also make traditional tables with four turned posts for legs. A Drive to Help Others Leads to the Blossoming of a New Business

“I

n order to be happy and succeed, you have to have faith in yourself and never stop doing what you believe in,” Beverly McCormick was often told as a child. True to her mother’s guidance, she has done just that. Recently hatched Lifestyle Concierge of Vero Beach is the culmination of her many years of professional experience caring for others, and her personal journey as a single mother and breast cancer survivor. Beverly relocated to Vero Beach from South Carolina in 1989 along with her young son Daniel. As a single mother, and in an attempt to provide every opportunity to her child, she often found herself needing to be in three places at once. A difficult feat for anyone without support from friends and family. She took a job as Surgery Coordinator at the 46

July-August 2015

Vero Eye Center where she worked for over twenty years. “What I really loved about my job was the personal connections I made with our patients. Most of these remarkable people required surgery planning or referral, but many had other issues to contend with as well. I would begin with counseling and scheduling the patient to ensure they received the best of care and then was often asked to help them out in a variety of other ways as well,” Beverly explains. “They became like family to me. I was honored when they asked me for help,” she continues. Her experience exposed the need for someone trustworthy and caring in the community to assist people with everyday tasks. In 2013, Beverly began her battle with breast cancer. She reports receiving the best possible treatment and recovered fully. The ordeal made her acutely aware of how precious each day is.

Her conviction to follow her mother’s advice, to always do what she believes in, fueled her decision to start a business dedicated to helping others. Operating with the highest integrity and complete discretion, Lifestyle Concierge of Vero Beach is a full service concierge company. Services offered include: property management, home care, personal assistant services, travel planning, special event planning, pet care services and much more. Lifestyle Concierge of Vero Beach aspires to help people manage their lives and live more fully while enjoying the lifestyle Vero Beach has to offer. “Life is too short not to enjoy every sunrise and to make the most of every day. It is my hope that I can take some of the burden away and help my clients (my friends) do just that,” Beverly concludes. Wedding Planning It’s a Love Affair

I

have a love affair with beauty. As a little girl, I would run into the grocery store and go straight to the magazines, specifically bridal magazines. I loved seeing the dreamy bouquets and the gorgeous wedding details. That’s when I developed my passion for weddings. Fast forward to present day, and I am living my dream as a successful wedding planner and florist. My name is Lara Andrews, and I own Lara’s Theme Event and Floral Planning. I feel so blessed to be located in such a gorgeous area with so much to offer our clients. I am so grateful to work with my husband, best friend and business partner, Richard Andrews. “We both have a love for weddings and our motto is “Make it Pretty.” At Lara’s Theme Event and Floral Planning, we do everything from full wedding planning to making beautiful bouquets and arrangements, including officiating the ceremony. In many ways, we are a one-stop shop. This makes it stress-free for the bride, groom and their parents. We specialize in custom flowers for each bride, from lush organic flowers for centerpieces to bouquets with a modern twist. We are blessed to have an exclusive planning studio located at 1416 Old Dixie Highway, just north of Christie’s Fitness. It has many props, glassware and rental items to ensure your day is as perfect as you have always imagined. We work by appointment only. We are often in meetings with photographers, and other wedding vendors to plan the exclusive weddings we style. My husband and I pride ourselves in creating dream weddings whether it is an Italian Tuscan Garden look or a crystal fairytale ballroom dream. We believe each wedding should be unique in its design and elements. We are always looking to create a one-of- a-kind wedding for our clients. We specialize in working with many brides for destination weddings at the local hotels, our exclusive, private clubs and estates. Every wedding we do brings us so much joy, especially when we observe our brides’ faces light up when they see their flowers on their wedding day! We love helping each bride make their wedding dream become a reality. Our latest venture is Magnolia Acres. Magnolia Acres is an outdoor wedding venue located west of Vero Beach. The property sits on 10 acres of old Florida which features a beautiful carriage house and a pond, along with an island that is perfect for bridal ceremonies. Magnolia Acres is the perfect backdrop for any event, large or small. We hope you enjoy the beautiful pictures taken of our work and feel free to contact us to start planning for a Lara’s Theme Wedding. it’s a boater’s life

The Evolution of Bonefish Hippies While paddling the shallow flats of the Turks and Caicos Islands with a fly rod in hand, bonefishing guide, Bibo Jayne, quickly realized the limitations of the standard surfboard fin typically sold for paddleboards. Chasing after bonefish on a SUP (standup paddleboard) meant cutting across shallow, grassy flats, dragging his board over sandbars and pushing into rocky creeks, and this became almost impossible with the stock fin that came with his board. With his knowledge of boat and surfboard design, Bibo engineered a dynamic flatwater fin that fits on any paddleboard with a standard longboard fin box, allowing the paddler access to anywhere. The aluminum V-shaped fin design offers 3-5 times more surface area than a regular fin, allowing the board to maintain stability while keeping it level when hitting bumps. Bibo often loads a fleet of paddleboards onto airboats for extremely remote bonefishing and never has to remove the fin to

stack, haul or store his boards. After three years of testing his design in their fishing charter business, Bibo and his wife, Marian, recently launched Bonefish Hippies, an online store where they not only sell these 4x4 SUP fins, but also a stripping mat used for fly fishing, designed especially for paddleboards. Bonefish Hippies SUP fin is priced the same as entry level paddles and comes in several sizes and colors, upgrading your paddleboard’s looks, as well as performance. By Marian Jayne Bibo and Marian live between Melbourne Beach and Turks and Caicos Islands, where they own and operate a fishing charter service. Visit www.bonefishhippies.com and www.beyondtheblue.com to find out more. You can also pick up your SUP fin at Paddleboard House in Melbourne.

t was sweltering outside, a steamy 98 degrees. The summer sun was unrelenting. Inside the shelter, there was no relief. No air conditioning, and not even one fan. It was a cheerless place; too many dogs crammed into one hot cage. All these innocent dogs were facing death today. On this particular day, there was a small black dog that caught their eye- one who was curled up in a ball in the back, lying in her own feces. It was a sight almost too hard to bear. Big Dog Ranch Rescue selected that dog and nineteen others to take back to the ranch in Wellington. When they told the shelter workers they wanted that small black dog, the workers said that she was sick and scheduled to be euthanized later that day. There was no way Big Dog Ranch Rescue was leaving that sad, sick, black dog behind. They took her, knowing the cost to treat her could be thousands of dollars. Big Dog Ranch Rescue, President , Lauree Simmons, says, “We took a chance that her life was worth saving.” This is nothing new at Big Dog Ranch. “BDRR“ is the largest no-kill animal shelter in the southeast, and ninety percent of their dogs come from local shelters; the rest are owner surrenders. Big Dog Ranch Rescue is located in Wellington, Florida, and sits on twenty-eight acres. Upon arrival, dogs are promised a safe life. Most get adopted out and find homes within six months, but for some it can take much longer. Their adoptable dogs range from purebreds to mutts, in all shapes and sizes. “We will always take the sick dogs that need care no matter what the cost. It’s what separates us and makes us different from other animal shelters,” said Simmons. Saving dogs is what Big Dog Ranch Rescue does. As you can probably guess, it costs a lot of money to run a facility like this. “We are constantly in need of donations. We ask, because every dollar we get, goes to saving an innocent life,” says Emily Pantelides, a board member at BDRR. “Even a simple five dollars can be the difference between a dog getting their medicine or not.” Each year, Big Dog Ranch Rescue holds three major fundraising events. A winter social, a private golf tournament (where they pair pro golfers with amateur players), and a March luncheon at Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach named Wine, Women and Shoes. Each of these events bring in enough money to save little black dogs like Maple. Who, by the way, not only now has a name, but also has a wonderful home. Maple was sick because she had two dead puppies inside her. Maple was one of the lucky ones. Other dogs are not so lucky. With your help, Big Dog Ranch Rescue hopes that one day they can save them all. To learn more about Big Dog Ranch Rescue or to get involved and volunteer, just head to their website at: www.bdrr.org

Summer… And The Living Is Easy!

S

ummer is a fun and carefree time of year but for our pets certain issues can quickly arise that should be addressed as soon as possible. High heat and humid conditions predispose our pets to the influx of pests. Thirst, dehydration and heatstroke are also a concern for pets that spend any amount of time outdoors. Fleas can be a source of aggravation for both owners and pets. Prevention is the key to control, and includes, both inside the house or kennel, and outside in the yard. There are several monthly canine and feline flea preventatives prescribed specifically from your veterinarian that are highly effective in the prevention of flea infestation. Currently, there are flea products that can be treated both, orally or topically. Treating the environment is just as important in preventing flea outbreaks and are best controlled by talking to your local pest control company. Summertime showers also bring the arrival of mosquitoes. Mosquitos are the carriers of heart worms, and unfortunately, are a year-round problem, especially, in the southeast. Prevention of heartworms are a must. It is much easier and safer for our pets to stay on a heartworm preventative versus treating the actual disease. If infected, the heartworm treatment can be quite difficult on the patient, and if left untreated, can result in heart disease. Several heartworm products are on the market and finding the appropriate product for your pet is best discussed with your veterinarian. Annual heartworm checks are recommended to ensure your pets stay healthy. Ticks are a little more difficult to control, as not all types of ticks respond to the same product. They can transmit blood diseases too. Fortunately, a vaccine exists which protects against Lyme’s Disease. Diligent examination and appropriate use of a tick preventative recommended by your veterinarian helps minimize the problem. During recreation, our pets need shelter from the sun and heat just as we do. If shade and water are not made available, heat stroke and dehydration can occur. Pets will experience rapid panting, lethargy, rapid heart rate, dry skin and elevated body temperature. When thirsty, pets will often seek any nearby water source. When enjoying the river or beach, this may mean drinking brackish or salt water which can result in disastrous stomach disorders. If any of the above occur, seek immediate veterinary care. Not all pets swim. Make sure you invest in a proper lifejacket for your pet. Take care to ensure the safety and health of your pets as they play with you outdoors. Warm weather activities are so much more fun when shared with our pets! Charles B. Johnson, DVM is owner and director of Indian River Animal Hospital, Inc. He and Marjorie J. BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life

in the stars

Happy Fourth of July! For the majority of July and August, we can feast on mostly easygoing aspects. Juggling work and pleasure will be the issue for everyone. During the summer, we should be able to relax and take some time off. The last few years have been very heightened, so it’s finally time for a downturn in the stress department. Make sure you hit the beach, and enjoy your summer! ARIES: For much of this month, Aries will feel torn between career issues and family matters. Take time on the New Moon on July 15th to make some new beginnings in the area of home, family, and domestic matters. Another New Moon on August 14th brings happiness in the love department, including soaking up love from your children too! You should be smiling during the last two weeks of August. TAURUS: Expect some drama in your personal life around July 15th. By the time we get to the Full Moon on July 31st, you should be getting a boost in your work life. You are the ultimate multi-tasker for much of July. You have been waiting for a long time to travel and meet interesting new people, and August is the time to get out. Especially around August 26th, you could be surrounded with an array of admirers. GEMINI: If something has been bugging you, the Full Moon on July 1st will give you the chance to speak your mind and clear the air. July 25th has you in a bit of a feisty mood, so keep yourself grounded and safe. August brings rewards for things you have been working on for months. You should be delighted with events around August 6th. CANCER: Everything is about personal relationships for Cancers this July. The two Full Moons of July could have you swept away in a new romance. Just make sure you’ve known this person for at least six months before making any big decisions. Money issues seem to be getting better, especially after August 11th. LEO: July has some promising Full Moons that will highlight your relationship department. On July 15th, just make sure you are on the lookout for people who might be trying to take advantage of your good nature. August has you feeling luckier than you have felt in a long time. You couldn’t ask for a better combination of planets helping to make your dreams come true. VIRGO: Try to avoid getting into a confrontation with a loved one around July 14th. You are such an action-oriented person that dealing with lazy people can make you nuts, so have patience. By the time we get to the second Full Moon on July 31st, you are simmering with new possibilities. August 4th is a wonderful day for anything romantic. By the end of the month, you should be feeling pretty grateful. LIBRA: You might be thinking of trying something new in July. Perhaps a new home, or a new job? You’ve been wanting to make changes. By the time we get to August, you should be off and running in a new direction. The New Moon on August 14th will put you in the spotlight. You will attract people. Take advantage of this time to solidify your new friendships and new pathways. 66

July-August 2015

SCORPIO: Between now and September 17th, when Saturn finally leaves your sign, you should be finishing up any loose ends. July is a month to complete any projects that have been occupying your mind for the last two years. It is time to really clear out the closets and let go of what no longer serves you. Early August is the perfect time to discuss anything that you’ve been putting off saying. By mid August, you are seen as an authority figure, so stick to your beliefs and people will back you. SAGITTARIUS: You love intellectual conversations, and the Fourth of July holiday is an excellent party time with fascinating new friends. Around July 15th, you will be able to handle any difficult conversations that you need to have with a loved one. In August, you will be all about fun. Just be a little cautious around August 3rd, when you might find yourself irritated with an authority figure. CAPRICORN: You are prone to keeping things for longer than you need to. During the month of July, but especially around the New Moon on July 15th, the planets are urging you to see everything in a new light. If you have too much clutter, you can’t see anything! Time to clear the decks and make way for the new. August brings good news around a personal issue that has been troubling you. AQUARIUS: July has you feeling a little bit antsy. It’s as though you want to drastically change your home, or your appearance. Not a bad idea, as long as you thoroughly go over the possible consequences for your actions. August is the month for adventure and romance. You should have a five star month, with the high point being around August 26th. PISCES: You come from the world of water, and you will be “swimming” in your element in July, as the sky is full of positive water energy. July brings in new and interesting people. You have plenty of reasons to be grateful, especially when August rolls around. Your enthusiasm is contagious, especially around August 4th. If you need to convince someone to do something, try stating your case around that day. You will be hard to resist.
