LIFE

WELL SAID

FL AT ON

And we’ll all float on okay…this catchy Modest Mouse song could easily be the anthem for Vero Beach and the Treasure Coast. Easy breezy days, soaking up the sun, floating on the ocean and watching the sun come up at 6am—these are just a few reasons why I love summertime! Summer in Vero is all about the locals. We’re lucky to be able to go fishing, boating, diving, and surfing whenever we want. Getting up before dawn and heading out of the inlet for a day of fishing and diving is a favorite pastime of many year-round residents. Many families cruise over to the Bahamas by boat several times throughout the summer. It’s hard to believe we are only a 3-hour boat ride away! We recently spent the day aboard two new Pursuit boats, cruising the Gulf Stream where we trolled for mahi. The farther away from shore we got, the glassier the ocean became. We left the docks just as the sun kissed the horizon and cruised back into Fort Pierce Inlet near sunset. It was the perfect day! We also had the opportunity to tour the Pursuit factory, where we learned about the manufacturing of these amazing boats. The best part: it’s located right in Fort Pierce! Do you dream of living on the water? Then make sure you check out our story on Grant Island—where you can do just that! This adorable little island located just north of Sebastian is rich in history and your only mode of transportation is by boat! No cars allowed! We’re so excited about south Hutchinson Island! As a boater, it’s exciting to see growth along the waterway. Causeway Cove Marina is a new 198-slip, cutting-edge community marina, with a waterfront RV park, kayak and paddleboard launch, plenty of greenspace, along with a community and event outdoor stage. Future plans will be to host boat shows, outdoor concerts and movies, and so much more. This new venue hopes to be a boating destination with world class resorts and restaurants. As we like to say, life is just better by the sea. Whether you prefer to cruise the Indian River Lagoon or offshore, Vero Beach and the Treasure Coast provide endless opportunities to truly relax and recharge!

ABOUT OUR PHOTOGRAPHERS

JOE SEMKOW believes in capturing a moment so it can be savored for a lifetime. He has the heart of a wanderer and lives life one day at a time. He wants people to feel his work through his eyes and experience it as if they were right there enjoying the view. For Semkow, photography is a way to escape the hard times of life and disappear in to the serenity of Mother Nature. His images are in homes all over the country and belong to people who used to live here, or still do and love waking up to something spectacular. Semkow wants you to remember that life is a gift and that our time here is special. The beauty around us is our happy place and it does not cost us anything, it only asks that we respect and cherish it. @semkow116, InfiniteCaptures.com (407) 242-5117

LYNDSAY CUNNINGHAM is a Vero Beach native that has always had a passion for horses and photography. Throughout her life, she has traveled the country as an upper level 3-Day event rider (similar to a triathlon) with her horses. After high school, she moved to Boston to train with a well-known rider. Her days were spent riding and training, and at night she took classes at Boston University. This is where her passion for photography came to life. She took an evening course with John Robaton, a National Geographic photographer. He taught her the basics of the camera and how to manipulate photos in the development process inside a dark room. With the advent of new digital technology, Lyndsay now uses her Canon Rebel T5i and Sony a6000 to document the outdoors, family, farm life, sea life, and all that Mother Nature has to offer! Lyndsay is thrilled to be a part of our Portfolio family and she’s excited about our readers being a part of her photography journey! @lyndsay_cunningham_photography lyndsaycunninghamphotography.com (772) 538-3772

ABOUT THE COVER

We live where you vacation! Our cover was shot on one of the first calm mornings of spring in front of Costa d’Este Beach Resort. It was a beautiful morning spent out on the ocean paddling out with girlfriends while Joe Semkow was shooting with his drone from the beach. Joe always seems to capture the best candid moments and once I saw the shot I knew it was cover worthy for summer! www.portfolio-verobeach.com

ero Beach summers reward those who rise early and go to the sea. From brilliant orange sunrises that spill over the horizon and into the ocean, to pods of dolphin frolicking and fishing in one of the greatest shows on Earth, Florida nature and wildlife is abundant and breathtaking on an early summer morning. The Portfolio crew rose at 5 a.m. for one such morning. Waking up so early can feel disorienting, but we all agreed that we felt nothing but excitement— we knew it was a boat day! Climbing aboard Pursuit’s newest boats- the S 328 Sport and the S 368 Sport, we headed out of the inlet at 6 a.m. with a cool breeze on our backs, a delicate salt spray in our hair, and the beginnings of a sunrise at our bow. As we sprawled out and snuggled into cozy seats, the boat gently fell into the rhythm of the ocean. This was one of those rare days that reminded us why our ocean sometimes earns the nickname “Lake Atlantic.” We headed offshore aiming for weed lines and the Gulf Stream. The day was spent fishing, cruising, and swimming, exploring places we already knew but enjoying another perspective. We reeled in a beautiful, shimmering Mahi, snorkeled incredible local reefs, counted turtles as they popped their heads up to say ‘hello,’ and squealed as dolphin played in our boat’s wake. A picnic brunch with a spectacular view was the cherry on top of our perfect day on the boat—it was the kind daydreams are made of. Our experience aboard the newest Pursuit Sport models exceeded our expectations. Both boats were spacious and roomy, extremely comfortable in seating and ride, and just a blast to be on. No matter if we were riding at high speed to reach our destination, or trolling for fish, these locally built boats were smooth and relaxing! Pursuit prides itself on quality, craftsmanship and the “pursuit of happiness”—we can see why! After our day on the water, we learned so much about the brand, but more importantly, we gained new friendships and spent the best day doing what we ALL loved—BOATING!

Made in Fort Pierce, USA

Locally built Pursuit Boats stand the test of time for quality, innovative design and style, durability, and performance in Center Console, Dual Console, Offshore, Sport and Sport Coupe configurations on a global basis. The Portfolio crew was invited to tour the factory where Pursuit boats are manufactured. This locallyowned and operated company has had its roots planted in Fort Pierce and Holland, Michigan for decades. Every boat produced in the Fort Pierce operation is created through advanced design, engineering and production processes. This formula delivers a precision quality boat every time, whether its 23 or 40 feet in length. Touring the factory, we witnessed firsthand the quality of the craftsmen’s work. Each boat is handmade by talented engineers, electricians and artists. Every part of the process is meticulously controlled and innovated upon. For example, every mold for the fiberglass is designed and maintained in-house, and their unique grid system allows for an extremely durable structural system

that is created in just one fiberglass part. This process did not appear overnight, rather it has been honed by the company’s 70 years in business and dedication to delivering top-of-the-line boats. Pursuit Boats and its parent company, S2 Yachts, was founded by Leon Slikkers. In the 1940’s Leon got his humble start in the boat business with Chris Craft, working in the joinery department making cabinet tops. After learning everything he could from the factory and working in his garage to build his own boats, Leon went out on his own in 1955 to start Slickcraft in Michigan. With Slickcraft, Leon pushed the envelope of boat-making with his then experimental work building fiberglass hulls. By 1961, all wooden boats were discontinued in the Slickcraft line to make room for the blossoming company to focus on developing some of the best quality fiberglass boats in the world. It was not until the 1970’s that the Pursuit series of fishing boats was born. In the early 70s, Leon resigned from recently-acquired Slickcraft to form S2 Yachts and in 1977, Pursuit was introduced under the new brand. By 1983, Pursuit had a dedicated home and factory in Fort Pierce. Now, Thomas Slikkers, Leon’s son, continues the tradition forged by his father of pouring passion, innovative ideas and quality products into handcrafted, American-made boats. Under Tom’s direction, Pursuit’s timeless design has been translated across 16 current models, ranging from offshore to dual consoles. Today, a third generation is working within the company, shaping the direction of both Pursuit Boats, and sister company Tiara Yachts. The company’s strong partnership with Yamaha Marine has also added to the quality and reliability of their boats’ performance. Early on, Pursuit Boats and Yamaha Marine became partners in research and design to put both companies on the cutting-edge of propulsion science. Pursuit Boats are ideal whether you’re a family making the crossing to the Bahamas, a retired couple enjoying ocean adventures, or a local who wants to spend more time on the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean. If your time spent on a Pursuit boat is anything like ours, you’re in for many magical days and lasting memories. A special thanks to David Glenn, his entire family, Amy Gobel, Captain Chase Cornell, Joe Beale, and James McGuire for inviting us aboard! For more information, visit pursuitboats.com. 20

auseway Cove Marina is a cutting-edge marina, waterfront RV park, community and event center located on the Indian River just minutes from the Fort Pierce Inlet and Atlantic Ocean. From its broad recreational and facility offerings on both land and sea, the marina is an extraordinary center for fun, family, and community users of all ages, making the Fort Pierce revitalization plan a reality. These extensive public docks will be used for recreational and sport boaters including tourists, staycationers and loyal locals. Admission provides guests with the 198-boat slip backdrop. Slips will be rented monthly, along with 13 mooring buoys for transients and locals. The depth is limited to 4-8 feet of water, targeting the 30-40 foot sport fishermen. Boat lifts will be allowed for personal use. This marina is designed to accommodate salt-lifers of every variety and special events such as boat shows, family reunions, car shows, seafood festivals, concerts, craft shows, weekend festivals and fishing tournaments. Causeway Cove Marina will be a destination for travelers and will accommodate locals who appreciate what’s in their own backyard. Guests will have dockmasters and first mates on deck 24/7, 365 days per year. Dockmaster quarters, deck, and bathrooms will complement 10 Class A RV sites and a kayak launch, with plenty of open space. Service and accommodations will exceed expectations. The owner has the vision to establish a waterfront destination resort and marina that will attract visitors to our area so they can enjoy this paradise as we get to enjoy it. Causeway Cove Marina is a product of that desire and passion to create something that will better the community. What’s being built is not the end product. It’s the first step toward a beautiful resort village with shops, entertainment, restaurants and hotels. I love living in Fort Pierce and enjoy the water, the tropical climate, and the people that make our community great. Throughout the years, I have supported every effort to revitalize Fort Pierce. Not change it, just make it better, like it was when I was a kid. I want everyone to see Causeway Cove Marina and Fort Pierce like a native, where Southern hospitality is the rule, not the exception. It’s my dream to hear Palm Beach folks talk about how great Fort Pierce is. I want snowbirds to envy the lifestyle. I’d love to hear someone from Vero Beach say, “I love going to Fort Pierce. What a great place.” To be a part of a project to create a space where visitors can truly relax and feel comfortable is worth the challenge. It’s my passion and desire to make this the best little slice of paradise that I can. For more information, visit causewaycove.com.

T Welcome to Paradise

he little slice of paradise known as Grant Farm Island dates back to the 1880s. Surrounded by water, the 50-acre island, has been home to many islanders ever since. Ron Rathbun, was one of the first developers and built the first permanent home on the island where he raised two of his sons. The early pioneers farmed and fished for their livelihood, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that Grant Farm Island became popular. While some call it “Shangri-La,” others refer to it as “VIP Island” or “Vacation Island Paradise.” Far from highways, crowded shopping malls, and condominiums, this Australian pine-thicketed, half mile-long paradise can only be reached by boat. There are no bridges to this island paradise, but for good reason. Once on the island, the only sounds you hear will be those found in nature, like the whispering of the wind blowing through the tall trees, a dolphin playing out in the lagoon, or the occasional buzz of a passing boat. The island is equipped with septic tanks, ground water, electricity and telephones, but little else. Your only mode of transportation once on the island is a bike or golf cart as no vehicles are allowed. The island provides an exclusive haven that feels a million miles away, yet minutes to shore and daily conveniences. This is a fisherman’s paradise just minutes from Melbourne, and only an hour and a half drive from Orlando. If you’re looking for a perfect spot for fishing, or to make relaxation your permanent residence, this is the place for you. Kick off your shoes, and enjoy island life. At time of printing, these properties were available for sale by Lauren Merrell at Dale Sorensen Real Estate, lmerrell@sorensenrealestate.com.

f paddling while surrounded by clear blue water sounds like paradise to you, add the Crystal Kayak to your summer shopping list. The Crystal Kayak Company™ can trace its roots all the way back to Vero Beach. Co-Founder Andrew Walker spent much of his young adult life in Vero Beach after his family moved here from California. Having spent most of his days on the water; sailing, swimming and fishing, Andrew has always naturally been fascinated by boating. While the connection to the water is simple to make, equally as important was Andrews connection to local entrepreneur AJ Koontz who inspired and mentored Andrew to start his first business. The Vero Beach community holds a strong connection to the Crystal Kayak brand. The Crystal Kayak Company™ is proud to be America’s premier manufacturer and distributor of commercial-grade transparent kayaks with GE brand Lexan™ hulls. Their patent-pending design turns heads while providing excellent performance on the water. The company is headquartered in Deerfield Beach. eekends are made for boating! Especially when you live in a boating paradise! After a day of offshore fishing or diving, locals gather at the Cove located right inside the Fort Pierce Inlet. Friends anchor up and float in the cool blue water as families enjoy the beach. Another great hot spot for boaters is at the north end of Indian River County at the Sebastian Sandbar. Hundreds of boaters flock to this beached destination located right inside the Sebastian Inlet. Surrounded by a big sandbar, boaters beach their boats or raft up together for a day of fun in the sun. If you want to avoid the crowds, just east of Capt. Hiram’s Resort is another great little boating spot. This little island has a long sandbar off the south end that provides deep water to the east as well as protection from wakes in the ICW. It’s a great spot for exploring, camping and just chilling out. It’s not as crowded as the Sebastian Sandbar so it’s a little more laid back and relaxed. You don’t have to go to an inlet to get in on the fun as many of the Spoil Islands along the ICW make for a great spot to “drop the hook” and just enjoy the relaxation of the salt air, a good meal and if you’re lucky, a beautiful Florida sunset! These cool local hot spots for boaters are great places to meet up with your boating friends or make new ones! Gas up the boat, pack the coolers, grab your beach chairs and get salty! Summertime is here…let’s go boating!

LIFE’S

A BEACH

We Dig

Team Turtle

I

t’s the peak of sea turtle nesting season in Indian River County! July and August are the busiest months of the year for the Indian River Sea Turtle Program. Not only are nests being laid every day, nests are also hatching every day. It is up to the program’s coordinator and volunteers to record and evaluate these nests and conduct educational programs to get the local community more involved in sea turtle conservation. This means you may find program volunteers working on the beach up to eight hours a day covered in sand, sweat, and saltwater, or doing public presentations early in the morning. It is the endless hours of hard work put forth by the volunteers of the Indian River Sea Turtle Program that deserves an applause. Many of these individuals are retired, some have full-time jobs and a few are college students gaining experience to help guide their future career choices. Without these volunteers the program would not be as successful as it is today. The month of July also brings with it everyone’s favorite opportunity to see sea turtles! Turtle Digs are an activity which started in 2016 and occur three days after specially marked nests hatch in the heart of Vero Beach (Sexton Plaza). At these Digs, guests are asked to circle around a roped off area and listen to a short presentation given by trained volunteers about sea turtle facts, impacts to sea turtle survival, and the ways everyone can help conserve sea turtles.

While learning new information, people of all ages get to watch the sea turtle team’s college interns evaluate the success of the hatched nest by collecting counts of how many hatched and unhatched eggs were left in the clutch. Hatched and unhatched whole eggs are taken around for guests to see up-close. Then after, any surprise hatchlings rescued from the nest are released to the ocean. To learn more about sea turtles or get to know the friendly volunteers, join us in July and August at a Turtle Dig. Event dates will be announced on Indian River County’s Coastal Division Facebook page @IRCcoastal and will be promoted by the 2017 Turtle Friendly Businesses.

G

ifford is documented as one of the most disadvantaged communities in the United States. The Veterans Council of Indian River County and Gifford’s American Legion Post 181 collaborated to address a community need. Indian River County and Gifford representatives created the Gifford Neighborhood Plan 2014, which outlined issues that needed to be addressed to bring Gifford back. While major housing issues were being tackled by larger organizations, the Gifford Neighborhood Plan 2014 also identified the need for home improvement activities like those performed by the Veterans Council collaboration. The non-profit Veterans Council collaborative met this challenge with the “Veterans Helping Veterans” project. A Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program grant funded the pilot. Veteran homeowners were assisted with home improvements and repairs that were unaffordable or difficult for them to do themselves. This was done without a requirement for repayment of the funds. In addition, the project addressed veterans’ unemployment and poverty issues through coaching and providing stipends for disadvantaged veterans to do the work. The foundation was laid for building neighborhood pride and allowing homeowners and volunteers to regain self-esteem. The project matched unemployed veterans with veteran homeowners who needed help with home improvements. The work included minor repairs, painting, as well as assist with clean-up indoors or outdoors. The GHCOP grant paid for supplies and tools required to do the work. Butch Cappelen helped by donating some paint and materials needed for the jobs and Home Depot of Vero Beach provided deep discounts on paint and materials. Leon Barnwell and Al Davis from American Legion 181 identified and qualified homeowners and volunteer workers. Curtis A. Paulisin, Director of the Veterans Outreach Program and Veterans Council 1st Vice President, prepared material estimates and quoted labor costs if a commercial contractor completed the work. Gifford contractor, Marvin Ross coached the veterans doing the work. The veteran workers volunteered two-thirds of the time required to do the work and the grant paid them one-third the amount a commercial contractor would charge. This not only provided funds for unemployed veterans, but allowed them to get work experience enhancing their chances to qualify for future home improvement jobs. A letter of recommendation accompanied payment upon job completion. The GHCOP grant was awarded in April 2016 and to the delight of eight homeowners, work on their homes was completed by the end of the year. Family Ties M

y passion for fly fishing and tying can be traced back to a single day. It all started when I was 13 years old. It’s a memory that will stay with me forever because it sparked my journey into the world of fly fishing. On a hot summer day, my dad and I were organizing the attic when I found a box full of my grandfather’s fishing equipment. In that box was a jig tying vice that he used to tie his bluefish jigs in Maryland, along with some of the thread he used to wrap the jigs. I was so intrigued and instantly began watching YouTube videos and more to learn what fly tying even was. The very next day, I convinced my mom to take me to the nearest tackle shop so I could try out what would later become one of my greatest passions. We drove to White’s Tackle where I met Geoff Quatraro. He gladly helped me pick out some beginner materials to start tying. At the time, neither of us thought that I would later be working for him and he would become a good friend. I started practicing every day, perfecting my flies and testing my creations in my backyard on various snook and tarpon. I would report 42

July-August 2017

back to White’s to get more advice and more materials to continue my addiction. The summer before ninth grade, my parents sent me on an 18-day backcountry trip in Colorado with Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions. I learned so much on this trip and after we set up camp at night, I would practice tying the small flies used for catching mountain trout. After a year of nonstop tying and fishing my patterns hard, people started to notice that I had the flies that would not only catch your eye because they were a work of art, but they were also proven to catch fish. That’s when I realized I could make a business out of tying flies. After supplying my friends, I decided to take things up a notch and ask White’s Tackle for a job as their local fly provider. They happily took me under their wing and not only improved my fly tying drastically, but mentored me in the business and helped shape me into the person I am today. Through the years, fly tying has taught me numerous lessons and has led me to meet many amazing people. From tying flies for my friends, to shipping my flies all over the country, my company, IR-Flies, has grown from a simple beginning with my grandfather’s 1950s vice, to a more developed talent making saltwater flies that I enjoy and sell. here’s something similar about a woman and the open water. Both are strong, steadfast and a force to be reckoned with. Lady anglers are no different. By weekday their trades consist of corporate offices and carpools. But on the weekends, that’s when the passion for the ocean comes alive. Like magic, it provides an instantaneous feeling that is utterly indescribable— I call it, “Saltwater Happy.” Mornings begin at 6 a.m. sharp, hair is thrown in a hat and with coffee in hand, it’s time to go fishing. Watching the sun peer over the horizon, providing warmth on your cheek, the boat runs toward the start of the day. An optimism overcomes you that puts that extra beat in your heart as you crank up the music and head to the first GPS mark. Today is going to be a good day; you are blessed. Any Florida native will tell you, fishing isn’t for the faint of heart. In the maledominated sport of offshore fishing, you rarely hear about the passions and presence women have for pelagic fishing. Stereotype suggests that women are ‘the caretakers,’ the ones who pack the coolers, assemble sandwiches and slather sunscreen on the entire family. However, I believe there are many women who seek adventure and immerse themselves in the outdoors. There’s just something about the thrill of reeling in your first fish that has you hooked for life—am I right? Opportunities for women anglers are steadily growing thanks to the growing popularity of tournament fishing. Women have proven their performance in local and national tournaments by forming teams and out-fishing men in many instances. These female fish fanatics bring a new passion for the sport and a true appreciation for women who love to fish for generations to come. So, what’s the secret to becoming a lady angler? Patience—I believe patience is the key to a successful day on the water. Not only do you put up with long hours in the hot sun, hands are covered in ballyhoo and in each instance, you are also receiving strict direction from your captain to re-rig your rod, re-tie that line and reel down, REEL DOWN! The action is addictive but with patience comes the prize of life lessons that you can be proud of. Like life, you have good days and bad, but never underestimate what’s on the other end of your line, it may be just the surprise you’ve been waiting for.

TICKS, LYME AND

Summertime!

T

here’s a common myth that Lyme disease is only found in the northeast, and we shouldn’t worry about infection in Florida. This is just one of many misunderstandings that surround this disease. Florida is home to a research expert in tick-borne illness, Kerry Clark, PhD, professor at University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Dr. Clark has studied Lyme and other tick-borne diseases in the southeastern United States for the past 20 years. He proved that two species of ticks in Florida carry Borrelia, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Additionally, his research teams have identified infected ticks on various reptiles and animals besides deer, including certain snakes, lizards, birds, rabbits and the white-footed mouse. Summer is prime time for encountering ticks. The probability of being bitten has grown due to their rapidly expanding numbers. Studies show that warmer-than-normal temperatures can more than quadruple tick reproduction. Moreover, suburban development of agricultural land and forest creates infringement upon surrounding natural habitat which greatly increases human exposure. Should you find a tick embedded in your skin, look online for instructions on how to remove it properly. There is evidence that the bacteria can transmit to humans more rapidly than once assumed, so prompt and precise removal of the tick is essential. Ticks often carry and spread more than one pathogen. In Florida, the most common tick-borne diseases are ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Symptoms of these infections include fever, headache, muscle/joint pain and moderate to severe fatigue which usually start within two weeks of being bitten. The classic bullseye rash appears in some cases, but approximately 40-60 percent of patients who suffer from Lyme never presented with a bullseye rash. If treated immediately with appropriate antibiotics for enough time, many cases of Lyme can be stopped from progressing into persistent Lyme disease. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS)

developed guidelines for treatment that are outside the traditional infectious disease model. Doctors who follow these guidelines are often referred to as Lyme-literate Medical Doctors or LLMDs. For acute infection, most LLMDs give 21-30 days of Doxycycline which is more than the typical 10-14 day regimen usually prescribed. Patients on a longer course of initial treatment seem to fare better over time. The best way to prevent Lyme is to avoid being bitten. If you hike or picnic in grassy, wooded areas, it’s best to take precautions. The Florida Department of Health recommends the following: • Use repellant that contains 20-30 percent DEET • Apply permethrin to clothing and gear, wear long sleeves and pants • Walk in the center of paths and trails • Perform tick checks on yourself, your family, and your pets • Shower soon after being in tick habitat • Use veterinarian recommended products to keep ticks off pets • Keep the grass, shrubs and trees near your residence trimmed In the next edition of Portfolio, we’ll discuss what to do if you suspect Lyme, including current testing methods and treatment. TRIUMPHS IN ART & ALZHEIMER’S

A

t the end of 2015, life threw me a curveball. I hightailed it from L.A., where I had been working for years, to Vero Beach to help my mother care for my father who was declining with Alzheimer’s Disease. One extremely difficult year later, we admitted my Dad into a Memory Care home: HarborChase of Vero Beach. During a visit with my father, I saw the director of HarborChase and mentioned that I was teaching watercolor painting to adults at the nearby Vero Beach Museum of Art. She said, “So when are you going to start teaching art here?” I wasn’t expecting this question. Since 1990, I’ve taught art to thousands across the country, but never people with Alzheimer’s. I thought, why not?! Plus, it had the added bonus of giving me an opportunity to spend more time with my Dad—in a new way. I’ve been teaching art at HarborChase since February. These residents (ages 75–95), many with Alzheimer’s and Dementia have been, hands down, the most challenging students I’ve ever taught. Difficulties include hearing, seeing, understanding what’s going on and even holding a paint brush. For no reason, they may burst into tears or yell at the person next to them. One woman painted on her hand thinking it was the paper. When I say, “Now dip your brush in the cup of water,” they may dip their brush in any number of places. It all requires tremendous patience—and a sense of humor. Someone said to me, “Teaching Alzheimer’s patients is probably like teaching toddlers, right?” Wrong. Teaching toddlers is much easier. However, in every class, there comes a magical moment where the residents’ anxieties, tears and strange outbursts subside, and the room becomes a quiet studio of working artists. This is the miracle of art. It has the power to calm our turbulent selves. The triumphs of working with them come as small things: holding a paintbrush, finding the water cup, painting on the paper on one’s own, and my favorite moment, when the Alzheimer’s residents say, one by one, “this is fun.”

lejandro Davalos’ passion has always been ART. For years, he has worked with every possible medium on all imaginable surfaces, always as a hobby; but five years ago, he discovered the amazing world of digital art and its endless possibilities. He was so impressed by it that he quit everything he was doing and finally decided to work full time on his passion. In 2013, he presented his first solo show. It was an immediate success and he sold 70 percent of the artwork shown. In 2014, he won the People’s Choice Silver Award in the Lumen Prize Exhibition in Cardiff, U.K.; his artwork, “House at the Beach,” was exhibited in Cardiff, London, Amsterdam, Athens and New York. In that same year, he was one of the finalists in an important art contest organized by Aavid Corp. and his artwork, “Entrance to the Sun,” was exhibited in New Hampshire, Bologna, Italy and in Shenzhen, China. In 2016, he was invited to show his work at Galeria de Arte Ileana Viteri, which is the leading art gallery in Quito, Ecuador. In February, he entered the New York Art Expo 2017 Poster Challenge. His artwork, “New York, New York!” finished second among more than 850 artworks from artists all over the world. He visits Vero Beach at least once a year and much of his art can be seen hanging on the walls of prestigious doctors’ offices and in private collections. 50

He describes his art as, “A geometrical abstractionism influenced by op art, with a predominant care in the use of color. I spend more time choosing and blending colors than on the form of the piece. The amazing colors that can be found everywhere in my country, Ecuador, influence my art.” His aim is to transmit color, beauty, precision and self-movement through his art, leaving a sentiment of mystery in whoever is in front of it, making them come back time and again to confront the artwork. Float Florida’s Original

Lazy River

T

Kelly Bruce Beard floats the Ichetucknee River in pure Florida fashion.

ubing the Ichetucknee River is a Florida rite of passage. If you haven’t floated this crystal-clear lazy river in Fort White, add it to your summer bucket list. If you have, make it your mission to introduce an Ichetucknee newbie to this memorable experience. An hour north of Gainesville, the clear blue river meanders six miles through shady oak hammocks and wetlands before it joins the Santa Fe River. Swimming, snorkeling and tubing at Ichetucknee Springs State Park is the quintessential summer activity to beat the heat and enjoy Florida’s natural beauty. The park is a popular destination in the summer. Here are a few tips to ensure an enjoyable experience: • Arrive early to avoid a long line at the North Ranger Station. There’s a daily limit of 750 tubers launching from the North Canoe Launch. If this limit is not reached, the launch closes at 2 p.m. • Plan to picnic before or after your float. NO food, drinks, pets, fishing gear, tobacco, alcohol, glass or disposable items are allowed on the river. Tubers are subject to inspection. • Pets are allowed in the park on a leash, but not on the river or in swimming areas. • Save time by bringing your own tubes, stop by one of the rental vendors outside the park, or rent inside the park. Tubes must be smaller than five feet wide. • A tram service shuttles drivers back to the launch area after they park their vehicles at the take-out. The driver must purchase wristbands ($7 per person) for the group. • While you wait for your driver to return, take a dip in the Ichetucknee headspring, a crystal-clear swimming hole that maintains a brisk 72-degrees year-round. This beautiful spring is located at the north entrance and is open 365 days a year. • Wear sunscreen! I’ve witnessed many one-sided sunburns, even on cloudy days. Enjoy your relaxing float on this pristine river and keep an eye out for wildlife! For more information, including park alerts and instructions, be sure to visit FloridaStateParks.org/park/Ichetucknee-Springs. SENSATIONAL SUNNIES

T

he eyes are the windows to the soul. Shouldn’t we protect them? Established in Jupiter, our story began in 2008 as a boutique retail sunglass shop selling designer sunglasses. The Sunglass Shoppe of Abacoa quickly became popular with locals as well as tourists because our focus wasn’t on selling sunglasses, but providing exceptional customer service. Our goal was to make customers happy at the time of purchase, for the life of their sunglasses, and beyond. Due to the strong ultraviolet rays and the active outdoor environment of South Florida, we encouraged our customers to consider sunglasses with polarized UV400 lenses. However, in many cases they didn’t look as stylish as the sport sunglasses with these qualities. Our customers were spending $200 to $300 or more on designer sunglasses with lenses that weren’t as good as the sport sunglasses. It was then that we realized the overwhelming need for high-quality, polarized sunglasses that look and feel good, and provide superior protection against the sun. Through countless hours of designing, testing, and strategizing, we made it our mission to manufacture great looking, high-quality polarized sunglasses at affordable prices. Add a lifetime warranty, and Abaco Polarized Sunglasses was born. When we design our products, we take into account the comfort of the frame by utilizing premium lightweight materials. Our styles are carefully designed to fit and flatter face shapes of all types. Our objective is to deliver an affordable and fashionable product that far exceeds customer expectations, while providing the highest level of sun protection. Captivating Curacao Written by JESSICA MILTON Photography courtesy of SANTA BARBARA BEACH AND GOLF RESORT

F

ly south this summer to discover a luxury retreat at the four diamondrated Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort in Curacao, located in the southern Caribbean. This 350-room destination hotel is the island’s premier getaway with 27 oceanside acres and a menu of amenities and activities designed to appeal to all travelers. Tucked away on the 2,000-acre Santa Barbara Plantation—a notable area of this low-key island—Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort offers an unexpected perspective of the Caribbean landscape. Here, the region’s hallmark crystal clear waters are met by desert-like scenery that is a product of the island’s dry climate. Yet, it is exactly that that makes Curacao the ideal Caribbean island to visit during the traditionally wet summer months. Its specific location just north of South America keeps Curacao outside of the Hurricane Belt—which means fewer rainy days, more sunshine, and comfortable ocean breezes. A sister property to Costa d’Este Beach Resort and Spa in Vero Beach, under the umbrella of their shared management group and global hospitality company, BENCHMARK, Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort’s amenity lineup is stacked with activities that include wellness classes, the full-service Atabei Spa with indoor/outdoor treatment rooms, snorkeling and diving excursions, guided hiking and mountain biking tours, and the 18-hole Old Quarry championship golf course that borders the Caribbean Sea. Dining options at Santa Barbara include casual, international cuisine at Medi, or upscale dining at the resort’s open-air restaurant, Shore. While the resort’s setting on the expansive Santa Barbara Plantation lends a sense of seclusion, guests can easily access some of Curacao’s trademark sites in downtown Willemstad, the island’s capital city just 10 miles outside the plantation gates. There, sightseers can explore the Floating Market, where fisherman and farmers bring their freshest goods from neighboring countries, or walk the famous Queen Emma Bridge and roam the streets marked by brightly-painted buildings reminiscent of Curacao’s Dutch heritage.

WELL LOVED

Blue Heaven on Earth M

y wife Luanne and I left the corporate world in New Jersey and became Floridians in the fall of 2013. We wanted to be near our three married children and 10 grandchildren. Our dream was to create a new business where we could be together, make people happy, and give back to the community. Our vision was to open a rustic yet elegant outdoor wedding venue: Cielo Blu Barn. God blessed us with a beautiful property in Fellsmere that already had a well-constructed barn Photo by Cherished Reflections Photography and came with animals—chickens, goats, miniature horses and donkeys! Cielo Blu means “blue sky” in Italian and this is definitely our blue heaven here on earth. We spent the next 18 months planning and working on converting the barn and surrounding property into an event venue that would be spacious, peaceful, inviting, yet elegantly rustic. And yes, at the same time we were learning how to take care of all these new farm animals that we have come to love and so do our clients. As a family-owned and operated business, we strive to make Cielo Blu Barn a wedding venue filled with love and exceptional, personalized service. Our two daughters were married outside and it ended up pouring rain both times! We know the stress of wedding set-up, so we intentionally book only one event per weekend to give our clients a relaxed and enjoyable memory. An additional rehearsal and set-up day are included to allow stress-free preparation time for celebrations of up to 150 guests. Our property has many different photo opportunities, including our custom cedar barn doors, live oak swing, curved boardwalk with an oak ceremonial wedding arch, and picturesque fallen lighter knot tree. Situated on the western outskirts of historic Fellsmere, close to the Sebastian River State Park, Blue Cypress Conservation Area and the Stick Marsh, we are easy to locate and welcome you to tour our facility to personally see how your wedding can be uniquely captured on our piece of nature’s panorama.

A Life Well Loved

LIFE

WELL LOVED

enneth Ray Flickinger, age 90, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2017 at home with his wife of 65 years by his side. He was born and raised in Ohio. He served in World War II in the Pacific as a Medium Tank Crewman with the U.S. Army and also served as an MP in Frankfurt, Germany. He received ribbons and decorations as he proudly served his country. While on leave, he met his future wife, Lois Sikes, on a blind date. They were married on March 7, 1952 and raised their family in Ashland, Ohio. After the war, Ken was a farmer and a truck driver. Upon retiring, Ken and Lois purchased a home in Whispering Palms in Sebastian, Florida and lived there for the next 32 years. While living in Sebastian, Ken worked 19 years as a volunteer for the Indian River County Sheriff ’s Office. He also enjoyed the social club, running bingo night, puzzles, fishing, and going for a daily swim. Ken and Lois share a love that we imagine only exists in fairy tales. Their family and friends are blessed to have witnessed this once-in-a-lifetime love. Ken’s children were his pride and joy. His favorite pastime was listening as they told stories of their childhood and hearing them poke fun and laugh with each other. Every third day, Ken had breakfast with his son. Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Lois. His model of love will forever be cherished in the lives of his three children: Kim, Kay, and Ken; his eight grandchildren: Tina, JJ, Zane, Wade, Seth, Shannon, Jamie, and Kassie; as well as eight great grandchildren: Cameron, Mikayla, Isabella, Wren, Ellie, Hanna, Shaw and Tripp. Ken was loved by many and will be missed dearly. Financial Investing Made Simple

W

e recently had the opportunity to sit down with Trent Leyda and Mike Kanner of the Leyda Kanner Group at Morgan Stanley. The business of wealth management seems to be one of those businesses where everyone creates a personal, biased opinion. The Leyda Kanner Group thrives by taking the complicated and making it easy to understand and execute. These two individuals focus on one goal: making the client’s life better. Kanner points out that this can mean many things: reducing debt, protecting cash-flow, and understanding the fees you are paying.

“We’ve built our business on giving sound advice and the feedback from our clients has never been better,” says Trent Leyda. If you ask any financial advisor their philosophy you get similar comments like, “We use a holistic approach, and we put the client first.” However, spend an hour listening to Kanner and Leyda discuss their approach to investing and you get a sense that their primary concern is putting you, the client, in the best possible position. The Leyda Kanner Group at Morgan Stanley is one of those teams you want on your side. These financial advisors are super charged, focused on business, and selfless in making things happen. These busy guys have full schedules, but as that saying goes “You always want to be with the person that is the busiest in their profession.” Call Emily or Sheila at (772) 234-1834 to schedule an appointment.

or more than three decades, the family-run Groomingdales has been serving the Vero Beach community providing quality pet grooming services in a stress-free environment. “I have clients who come in and tell me that we used to groom the dogs of their grandmother,” says owner, Lou Sara. Although he says this makes him feel old, it speaks to the superiority and consistency that Groomingdales offers to people’s beloved pets. Lou and his partner of 40 years, Nancy True, moved to Vero Beach in 1982. Nancy’s entire career has involved dogs, starting with actively participating in dog shows and being the substitute handler of the dog actor playing Toto in the Wizard of Oz Disney on Ice show. It was a natural fit when Nancy decided to open Groomingdales in 1986. Lou, who has been a dog lover his entire life, had a successful career in the insurance business, but after suffering a heart attack, he decided to leave the stressful business environment and help Nancy at Groomingdales. Since Nancy’s retirement, Lou runs the business full time. “Our groomers have been with us for a long time,” says Lou. “Out of the four groomers and one bather, two of them have been with us for more than 74 68

20 years each and one for more than 10. We try to keep each dog with the same groomer each time. They get to know each other, and it creates a less stressful situation for the dog.” About 10 percent of their pet clients are also cats. During the season, about 30 pets come into the shop each day for grooming services including Shih Tzus, Yorkies, Westies, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles, to name a few. Dogs are treated to full service bathing, ear cleaning, nail trimming and haircuts ranging from $48 - $90 depending on the size of the dog. Basic bathing and ear cleaning service starts at $25 for small dogs. “One of our groomers does hand stripping which is a very specialized grooming technique for terriers,” says Lou. “We are the only place in Vero offering this service.” They also specialize in hand scissoring. “We try to make the dog look as close as possible to what the breed is supposed to look like,” says Lou. During each session, groomers inspect each animal thoroughly for anything abnormal. “We spend a lot of time with each dog and notice things because we see the pets more frequently,” says Lou. “There have been several times when we have noticed a lump on an animal and suggested that owner have the vet take a look at it. You don’t know how many times people have thanked us, saying that we helped save their pet’s lives.” Groomingdales has been at the same location, 1973 Old Dixie Hwy., Vero Beach, for 20 years. What a Beautiful, Healthy Litter!

DOG’S LIFE

T

he big day has arrived after waiting patiently for nine weeks. Fifi has successfully whelped her pups! A veterinary examination is in order to be sure all the pups have been delivered. An X-Ray taken toward the end of the pregnancy should alert you as to how many to expect, and what size they are. It’s also important for the dog to be examined immediately after the births to be certain none of the placenta has been retained. See that she has plenty of fluids, a well balanced diet, and a good multi-vitamin prescribed from her veterinarian. Once she begins nursing, the stimulation of hormones will propel her mothering instincts to kick-in and help her feel more comfortable with her new role as mama. The puppies must be examined for birth defects such as umbilical hernia, cleft palate, and heart diseases like patent foramen ovale or persistent right aortic arch. Fifi and her pups should be checked to ensure they’re adjusting to the nursing process and the pups are drawing sufficient nourishment from her. Monitor the pups’ weight and body temperature daily during the first few weeks and maintain a steady climate in the whelping box, as the pups’ health is susceptible to temperatures that are too warm or too cool. As their eyes and ears open at week two, you can begin to hold them in different positions to stimulate them. Be sure Fifi interacts with them outside of the nursing process to encourage their individual development. Introduce them to food by making a mix of milk replacer and water soaked puppy food. Puppies should begin eating solid food at three-and-a-half to four-and-a-half weeks. Vaccines should begin at six weeks. Keep the pups and Fifi together as much as possible while they grow. With proper monitoring of their development and adherence to veterinary schedules, Fifi’s pups will be ready for their new homes between eight and ten weeks. Congratulations on a job well done to both you and Fifi! Visit IRAHinc.com to make appointments, request medications, and view your pet’s history and any upcoming scheduled care. Follow us on Facebook at Indian River Animal Hospital. We wish all our pups and pet parents a playful, happy summer!

BEACH SAFETY

BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities.

beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day.

RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your

LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

Welcome to the dog days of summer! July is a relatively calm month compared to a very unpredictable August. From Aug. 12-31, we will all feel the effects of Mercury retrograde, so mark those days in your calendar as times when things might not go as planned…unless of course you were born during a Mercury retrograde period. There are also two major eclipses on Aug. 7 and 21. No one will get much rest in August with all this celestial activity! ARIES: July is a spectacular month for all rams. Enjoy a fabulous

Fourth of July holiday with friends and family. Money situations improve July 7-19. This is a great time to make a big purchase, like buying a car or a house. On July 24, stay away from getting all worked up over something that really isn’t that important. August is a month when you should prepare for the unexpected—especially around the 7th and 21st.

TAURUS: Everything is about your home during the month of July.

Either you are moving or redecorating—just keep your focus on domestic matters and making things better. July is a working month. There may be a family member who has different political views than yours. Try to avoid confrontations, as you will not be able to change anyone’s mind. August is a month for more play and travel. You’ve been working hard and now is the time to regain your energy for all that is coming your way this fall.

GEMINI: You’ll be the center of attention for most of July, as your

ruling planet, Mercury, will spend three weeks in Leo, which is always a very entertaining placement for a Gemini. Romance is highlighted around July 17, so don’t expect to spend a lot of time alone. August is a great month to clear out the garage and closets. With Mercury Retrograde on August 12, you may need to focus on a project you started a few months ago and never finished. Take the last two weeks of August to attend to even more details, like writing thank you notes that you should have written weeks ago.

CANCER: In July, be careful around the company you keep.

People might be trying to manipulate you, especially around July 20. Don’t allow anyone to take advantage of your gentle nature. August continues to feel quite intense for you, with lots of troubleshooting. You seem to be the only one who can fix certain situations. The month of August is less about work and more about play. You deserve some moments of pure luxury. If you go with the flow around August 27, an important decision you’ve made will turn out very well.

LEO: There is a new moon in your sign on July 23, which is a very

auspicious time for you to make a fresh start. You have been waiting for a door to open, and finally that time has come. The sun is in your sign in August, making your life more expansive than usual. Be careful around August 4, as there could be an intense encounter. With the two eclipses in August, everything is happening really fast, so be prepared for sudden changes on all fronts.

VIRGO: The full moon on July 9 will bring things to a head in the

relationship department. The good news is that you will be really glad because now the path forward is clear. If relatives or friends are in an emergency situation around July 27-28, remember that it is not your job to fix everything. Learn to back off, which is never easy for a Virgo. Mercury, your ruling planet, goes retrograde in your sign from August 12-31, making it hard for you to keep track of everything on your plate. Take it slow in August because your world might feel a bit topsy-turvy.

LIBRA: You won’t be bored in early July, as many parties around the

Fourth of July will keep you hopping. July is a great month to seek out a group of like-minded people, or start taking a class in a topic that has always interested you. You’ve been juggling a lot for a

while now, so it’s time to carve out time for you. July 7 and 18 are important days for making plans for the future. August has you feeling a little down because others seem to be disappointing you. Try not to expect others to always live up to your high standards.

SCORPIO: The weekend of July 7 with the full moon has you putting

romance before work. Just make sure you tie up all loose ends before taking off on a trip with loved ones. The increase in friendly playmates is evident around July 18. This is a fabulous time for feeling inspired and excited about many aspects of your life. Everything is feeling very sparkly, so enjoy! There are two eclipses in August, plus Mercury retrograde, so it is rather an unpredictable month. Someone from the past might reappear, especially around August 27. This person might reopen an old wound, but try not to make a big issue out of something that is really not that relevant to your current situation.

SAGITTARIUS: Pack your bags and hit the road in July! This is a

perfect month for travel. All of July is great, but especially July 7, 14 and 18. Money might be a bit tight, so hold off on buying that new car, or starting that kitchen-remodeling job. August gives you energy galore. You are sassy and full of impish energy. Just remember not everyone can handle all your firepower, so slow down just a bit, especially during Mercury retrograde which begins August 12. Money is still an issue at the end of August, so be smart and think before spending on anything lavish.

CAPRICORN: You’ve been very hard on yourself lately, and working a bit too much. If you feel as if you’ve been pushing a rock up a hill, it’s time to stop and take a rest. The full moon on July 9 will help you draw someone dependable into your life who can help you. This is an excellent time to allow people to give to you. Learning to receive may be difficult, but try to enjoy the assistance being offered. Stay away from hot heads on July 20. You don’t need the stress. August is a month to find solutions. August 27 brings a really nice treat. Accept it graciously. AQUARIUS: Someone with a lot of personal mojo will appear on the

scene in early July. It could be someone at work, or if single, a possible new romantic partner. You are in a playful mood, so enjoy this person’s positive energy. It’s high time for a vacation by the end of July, so hopefully you’ve already made your plans. On July 20, there is a tense aspect. Things might not go as planned, but try to roll with it. August has you surrounded by a lot of people, so by the end of the month, you may be craving alone time, especially on August 21. There are two eclipses in August. The first is on the 7th and the second is on the 21st. Take your time around these dates.

PISCES: Don’t be surprised if everyone ends up at your house over

the Fourth of July weekend, as you will be picked to be the instigator for the fun. If you have children, make sure you spend time with them between July 2-9. You are relieved that money issues are finally more relaxed. The new moon of July 23 is significant for romance, so be on the lookout if single. August brings Mercury retrograde into the picture, which starts on the 12th. Put your projects into motion before that date. On August 24, if you need to back off on some issue, please do so. This situation is not worth fighting over.
