pring is here; one of my favorite times of year. I love the bright green color of the old oak trees on Ladybug or Sandfly Lane. I love all the spring flowers and colorful blooms. This issue we are showcasing families that work together and play together. It’s also about being a community family and supporting our animals within our community. We are so fortunate to have the National Elephant Center in Fellsmere, the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary that takes care of our injured wildlife, and also Save the Chimps, where one woman, Dr. Carole Noon, was so determined to make a difference in the life of a chimp. It’s hard to believe that the world can be so cruel to mistreat animals and humans alike. We all should try to remember to practice random acts of kindness without any reason whatsoever, except to make the world a better place. Vero is a very special place to call home, whether you have lived here forever or if you’re relatively new. If you don’t have “family” in town, it’s nice to make new friends that also make great family. It’s about spending time together with people that you love being around. In our search for the perfect cover to go with our “rooted” theme, we came across a piece of property that has two amazing trees on it. They are banyan trees, which aren’t native to Florida but originally came as a gift to Thomas Edison. In doing our research, we found that not only are these trees sacred in some parts of the world, but these trees are believed to have been brought to Vero by Waldo Sexton, in fact, we think he planted 25 of them throughout our city! In addition to that little tidbit, we also found that the land our banyans call home also was “home” to a very special person in Vero Beach: Dr. William H. Humiston. Although his home no longer remains, we’re pushing to designate his “homestead” as a new park—we’d like to call it Humiston Park West. I loved reading about the Beautification Society in our Memory Lane this issue. I think we all could be a little more neighborly, care more about our city and most of all, be kind. Although we sometimes forget it, we are all a part of nature, and not apart from it. We need to stay true to our roots. As a community, we are all family - the people, our animals, and even our trees… Happy Spring!

busch wildlife sanctuary Wildlife Rescue and Rehab in a Natural Setting

T

he Busch Wildlife Sanctuary offers its visitors a one-ofa-kind opportunity to learn about Florida’s wildlife and natural environments. The Sanctuary’s natural setting is a unique refuge that combines a community nature center with a wildlife rehab hospital. With an abundance of trails that lead visitors through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and cypress wetlands, you will see wildlife habitats exhibiting a variety of native animals. The wildlife rescue and rehab program at the sanctuary provides comprehensive medical care to thousands of sick, injured, or orphaned wild animals each year with their ultimate goal of returning recovered patients to their natural habitats. Approximately 90% of the animals treated at the sanctuary have suffered from humans in some way or another. Bring the whole family for a day of fun and an educational enrichment of Florida’s natural wildlife. The sanctuary is operated solely on memberships and donations, please become a member or donate today! Visit www.buschwildlife.org for hours of operation, directions and more. 14 May-June 2014

he National Elephant Center is a 225-acre home for elephants with the potential for future expansion. The facility provides short-term and long-term care for elephants throughout North America in support of the accredited zoo population and for the welfare of elephants in need. Located in Fellsmere, the Center provides flexible habitats for both African and Asian bull (male) elephants, herds and social groupings. The Center is currently home to three African elephants, two females and one male. Since the group arrived in May 2013, this family of elephants has been spending their days foraging, swimming and interacting together. Although the Center is not open to the public, it offers educational programs to raise awareness. There are also limited opportunities to visit in support of these goals. save the chimps

“All they need is a chance.” ~ Dr. Carole Noon

S

ave the Chimps is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, located in Ft. Pierce. It was established in 1997, by Carole Noon, who strongly believed that, “all they need is a chance.” Save the Chimps is home to almost 300 chimps and is made up of 12, three-acre islands with family groups of up to 26 members. Dr. Noon’s mission was to provide and build support for a permanent sanctuary for the lifelong care of chimpanzees that were rescued from research labs, entertainment and the pet trade. Today, her legacy lives on. Save the Chimps is the world’s largest sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees and it is located right here on the Treasure Coast. You can help support this wonderful cause through adoption sponsorships, through a gift wish list or by becoming a member. One of our local eateries, the Patisserie Vero Beach, located at 1910 Old Dixie Highway, provides bread once a week to the Save the Chimps organization. Every day the staff and volunteers of Save the Chimps provide care to nearly 300 chimpanzees. Like us in so many ways, these creatures have personalities that make each of them very special. May 2nd marks the 5th Anniversary of Dr. Noon. The staff and volunteers of Save the Chimps will honor Dr. Noon in a celebration of her life and her legacy. They will declare it as Founders Day. ALL IN THE FAMILY Two Generations of Pet Care, More Than Just Love

Y

ou love your dog or cat so much that it just might be your favorite family member. Whether your pet only requires an annual check up or you suspect your pet may have a serious condition, you want the absolute best care available. While the veterinary community in Vero Beach has some well qualified veterinarians, the level of expertise that Marjorie Johnson Williams, DVM, MS, DACVP, offers her patients is exceptionally high. A board certified Clinical Pathologist, she has undergraduate and DVM degrees from Auburn University as well as a Master’s of Science in Microbiology from Colorado State University where she completed her residency. Publications of her studies include “The Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Veterinary Clinical Pathology.” Dr. Williams’ professional experience includes a licensed practice in Florida, as well as previously practicing in Alabama and Colorado. But if you ask her where she enjoys practicing the most, the answer is easy. That would be with her Dad, Charles “Bob” Johnson DVM, right here in Vero Beach. Being a veterinarian was a life-long ambition that originated in Dr. Johnson’s youth. His childhood was spent on a ranch where he fell in

love with a variety of animals. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and went on to be a medic in the U.S. Navy. From there, he went to Auburn University where he obtained his veterinary degree. In the mid-sixties, Dr. Johnson founded Indian River Animal Hospital with his wife Sandra, who has assisted him nearly every day. Having Dr. Williams join the practice full time is something Dr. Johnson has hoped would happen for some time. For him, it is “a dream come true.” What is the best part of their professional arrangement? They both say that it’s learning from each other. This exceptionally qualified family duo provides professional care that is unequalled in Vero Beach. A devoted father-daughter team, they love your pet just as much as you do. A passion for people and animals is a hallmark of their practice.

Both veterinarians provide medical, surgical and diagnostic care to small animals at Indian River Animal Hospital located at 801 US Hwy 1 in Vero Beach. They can be reached by calling (772) 567-4324 or on the web at www.irahinc.com.

Sugar and spice and everything nice… That’s what Frosting is made of.

T

here are many fun aspects of sharing a business with your mother. Late night runs for cupcakes and candy, working into the night while watching movies, out of town deliveries turning into exploring cities, going for much needed pedicures after work and simply goofing around and laughing with each other are just a few of them. When working late nights and long hours, we often do silly things just to make each other laugh. Like our relationship, we keep our business lighthearted and full of love, laughter and of course, lots of frosting! We never have to worry about trust in our partnership. We know we each have one another’s best interest at heart. We feel comfortable voicing every concern and we never have to worry about our partner losing interest. We each want our business to succeed just as much, for each other. We are willing to put in the extra hours out of love for our work and love for each other. We have worked all through the night and into the next day, and have even taken turns taking naps on the floor of our bakery. There is truly a dedication that can only be shared by family. Although we are business partners, at the end of the day, we are mother and daughter. We share more than just a store. We share our DNA, our family and our heritage. We have shared many great experiences together as mother and daughter, and have many more to come. Our business has been a wonderful part of our lives and has brought us closer than ever. One of the best parts of working together is sharing joy when we receive recognition for our work. Frosting was recently chosen as the 2014 pick for The Knot magazine’s Best of Weddings. We are so thrilled to have been chosen by The Knot for such a prestigious recognition and we are excited for the future of Frosting. We love bringing joy to our customers with cakes and cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and more. Our creations are part of the happiest events in people’s lives and we love being part of them. or the past 30 years, Southern Eagle Distributing, the local Anheuser-Busch distributor, has given back to the Treasure Coast in multiple facets. Increasing community employment through business expansions, donating to various local philanthropic organizations, providing benchmarks in regard to customer service compared to their competitors are just a few steps that Southern Eagle has taken to ensure a prosperous past and forward thinking future. The deep roots of the Busch family will continue to make footprints in and around the Treasure Coast with newly appointed President, Philip A. Busch, who plans to ensure that innovation and growth are first priority. Like his father, Peter W. I love being able to spend time with both my mom and dad all day, every day. Like any business, there are the usual stresses and disagreements but we have learned that it is just work and nothing personal, which is one of the most important things to remember when working with family. y mom and dad bought the Ocean Grill business in 1965. The Grill itself has been here since 1941 when it was constructed by Waldo Sexton on a sand dune only 200 yards from the Atlantic Ocean. Not only did he build the Grill, Sexton and his team of strong mules also cleared the way for A1A from the south county line to the Sebastian Inlet. The first meal served at the Ocean Grill was a romantic New Year’s Eve dinner. It has survived many storms and now a second generation of Replogle’s run the restaurant, and a third generation is greeting you at the front door and bringing your beverage orders. John is my brother and he has been working in the kitchen for 20 years. My son, Joey, worked at the Grill when he was in high school and he started working here again after graduating from the University of Florida, and after completing one year at the Culinary Institute in St. Helena, California. He has been working at the Grill for six years now. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

My wife, Mary, grew up working in the restaurant business. She has bartended, ran the lunch front of the house, prepared the wine list and now manages the gift shop. Working together as a family can have its challenging moments but at the end of the day we don’t take it personally. Ultimately, the best part is the trust. We know that each of us will do the

boating life: Friends Are Family

veryone remembers their first boating experience. Whether it was with the family or with friends, that first trip away from land becomes an unforgettable memory. The sound of the water and the smell of the air stays with us…an indelible watermark! From then on, you’re hooked. Welcome to the boating family! Boating is a lifestyle that strengthens the family bond, makes lifelong friendships and helps make friends feel like family. The family of boaters at Vero Marine Center is truly a family. Two generations of MacIntyres and Cunninghams continue to keep “The Busy Marina” lively on a daily basis. Both the MacIntyre and the Cunningham families ended up in Vero Beach after migrating from their respective waterfront towns “up North.” The small town, family-oriented feel of Vero Beach caused them to stay put and grow roots. The local waterfront was reminiscent of the towns they grew up in but with outstanding Florida weather. The days of shoveling snow were finally over! Within a few short years of meeting each other a friendship grew into a business partnership that remains at Vero Marine Center to this day. For 27 years, these two families have kept Vero Beach boating! There is an old saying that says, “when you love what you do for a living, you’ll never work a day in your life,” and this is the case with the family at Vero Marine Center. This society of local citizens and winter visitors not only brought people together and fostered friendships but provided an annual Beautification Day celebration for over 30 years! It also won national recognition as a novel idea in town improvement. Each year the Beautification Society would choose one location that could use improvement. Membership was open to the public and members could contribute by working on Beautification Day, or money with which to buy trees, shrubs and other supplies. Members contributing to work were expected to present themselves ready to work in the early morning, along with garden tools. Lunch was a hot meal provided by the Women’s Club. Sometimes even the high school band was invited to play during the lunch hour! Work ended when the day’s project was completely finished. The Beautification Society began in 1928 and was suspended in 1942 on account of the war. Dr. Humiston died the following year at the age of 89. It resumed again in 1950 under the leadership of Herschel Auxier. Beautification Day was devoted to the home and civic life of our community.

“I hope the Beautification Society will continue to be active until Vero Beach is known as the most beautiful city in the United States.” ~ W. H. Humiston www.portfolio-verobeach.com

lthough Dr. Humiston’s house no longer remains, what does remain are two beautiful giant Banyan trees. It is our mission to raise funds to purchase this property and make it a park in honor of Dr. Humiston, and for all the beautification he brought to our city. Just like back then, as a community, we all need to work together toward this common goal. We’d like to call it Humiston Park West. We hope that you will be encouraged and inspired by the photographs that you see here and that you’ll want to be a part of this amazing project. We all need to keep Vero Beach beautiful! After attending a council meeting recently, we hope we inspired the Tree & Beautification Committee to consider bringing back Beautification Day! Together, we can all come together as a community, young and old, visitors and residents, and help support this worthy cause.

Beautification Day Editorial, 1930 Beautification Day has come to be an institution in Vero Beach. It is generally observed and as greatly enjoyed as any of the regular holidays. Why shouldn’t it be? It is a day devoted to the home and civic life of our community. Physical beautification of the city lends beauty and charm to the environment of the home and business institutions of this community. Physical beautification begets mental and moral beautification. Combined together, these make the ideal community. The spirit of neighborliness is promoted by observance of this annual event. As people come to know each other better they have a keener sense of appreciation of each other and they get a higher value on community life.

The very spirit of this day promotes good will, respect and wholesome regard for our city in all aspects and departments. Cooperation is a much used word; and it is a wonderful word when put into practice. Particularly in community life, cooperation is a great factor in promoting progress and development. This spirit of cooperation, so evident on Beautification Day, is the same spirit that has carried Vero Beach steadily forward in the face of discouragement and handicaps. Every resident should have a part in the coming beautification event. It can be a glorious day in the history of the city and the lives of individuals. Let us make this an outstanding event of this year – so outstanding that it will once more bring commendable distinction to our beautiful city. — December 2, 1930, Vero Beach Press Journal

A Clean Car is a Happy Car

AT Classic Car Wash

A

s a young man, I always dreamed of owning a car wash. After having my own collection of sports cars and helping a friend get into the car wash business, it is no surprise that I ended up buying Classic Car Wash and Detail Center in 2006. To my family and I, Vero Beach was the perfect location to begin our new venture. I had been coming to Vero Beach for 25 years as I was in the wholesale produce business in New York. I always thought of this town as a great place to raise a family. We are going on our eighth year of business and we are growing just like Vero Beach. As the owner, I am always on the premises, 7 days a week. I feel you cannot properly run any business if you are not there. I treat every car as if it were my own. Quality is my top priority. At Classic Car Wash, we offer our customers many discounts and specials. Our best deal is the VIP card where you pay for 6 washes and get 3 free! A 33% savings! In addition, we discount all of our Detail Packages and we always have a 48-hour rain guarantee. Two other special services we offer are our “Paintless Dent Removal” and our “Ozone Treatment” for those nasty odors. Two times a year, love bugs are a big part of our business as we are considered the experts in removing those pesky little bugs. We know how acidic they are and how important it is to scrub them off before they chip away at your car’s paint. It’s no surprise that when folks arrive in Vero Beach, their first stop is usually our car wash. We make it a nice and pleasant experience. We have a great gift shop with the best cards and of course, a very friendly and helpful staff. Classic Car Wash, simply the best!

Mark Heyer is a “hands-on” owner at Classic Carwash & Detail Center. He offers exceptional customer service and top quality care of your car at Classic Car Wash! Stop in today and experience the difference!

Sunny resides in West Palm Beach and is widely recognized as the most accomplished and well-respected female polo player in the world. Sunny is the first woman in U.S. History to win the prestigious U.S. Open Polo Championships. In 2005, Sunny founded the Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT), an international women’s polo league. Her vision was to network with women she met who shared the same passion for polo and that wanted to compete at the top levels of the sport. Today, women’s polo is one of the fastest growing sectors in polo and the WCT is the largest women’s polo league in the world with recognized tournaments across the U.S. and internationally. life well lived

S

ummer time…hair gets lighter, skin gets darker, water gets warmer, drinks get colder, and the nights get longer. One of the best parts of summer is family vacation time! Whether it’s a weekend getaway or family road trip, escaping the day-to-day stress is essential for relaxation. As you prepare for your travels, there are a few important tips to remember to help maintain health and wellness for the whole family. A healthy gut is a happy gut. Traveling tends to result in a change from our normal dining routines. We tend to indulge in rich foods or resort to fast food for convenience. Introducing new foods to our gastrointestinal tract can sometimes trigger unwelcomed symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, bloating, or constipation. Taking a quality probiotic can help strengthen the intestinal lining and prepare the body for new exposures. If your child is not able to swallow a capsule, probiotics can also be found in foods like yogurt, kefir and kombucha. The nose is a point of entry through which external pathogens travel. Using a Neti pot or a kid friendly saline spray will help wash away most foreign invaders. Applying a small amount of Vaseline around the opening of the nostrils when traveling in confined areas will also help create a barrier to stop germs from entering the body. Preserve your skin. The skin is the body’s largest organ and first line of defense. If the skin is injured, it will directly affect how the immune system functions. Wearing sunscreen and keeping the skin hydrated is essential! Coconut oil is effective in quenching dry or burned skin. Calendula and aloe help repair damaged skin cells and stimulate new tissue growth. Do not underestimate sleep. On vacation, we often stay up way past our usual bedtime, the children especially. Despite the good times, adequate sleep is necessary for restoring major organ systems and vital nutrients needed for healthy body function. The energy that is being depleted during the day needs to be replenished at night. No one wants to be trapped in a car or plane with a cranky, sleep deprived child or adult! Vacations are designed to break away from the daily stressors while reconnecting with what matters most—family. Jessica Donnelly, AP, DOM Indian River Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine

n the spring of 2013, David W. Busch purchased Chelsea’s Market on Cardinal. David’s vision of melding the best of Chelsea’s with a new chic, urban and organic focus has inspired many great new entrées at Chelsea’s, while still continuing to feature the great menu items Chelsea’s is known for. In addition to dining in, meals to-go or grabbing fresh, David carries some of the best wines from around the globe. Chelsea’s also offers catering from small, intimate parties to 500 guest events with lavish dining. Recently, David along with his brother, Philip, President of Southern Eagle Distributing, collaborated to combine a 5-course meal, infusing recipes with a variety of Southern Eagle’s beers. What culminated was not only an amazing evening of dishes prepared by Chelsea’s Executive Chef, Michael Chandler, but a community gathering of local businesses supporting local businesses. These two brothers come from generations of the Busch family that are working together to better our community. August A. Busch, Jr.’s motto was, “Making Friends is our Business,” a legacy that the brothers continue today. The entire family comes together to attend events and put on events to help raise funds for the Peter W. Busch Family Foundation, which in turns helps our community.

mimmo amelio From Pasta to Paint

M

ost of you may know Mimmo from the Scampi Grill for his amazing talent in the kitchen. Did you also know he has a passion for paint? When you meet Mimmo, you know immediately he’s one of those guys that absolutely loves life. He’s like a firefly, all a-glow and full of sparkle. Mimmo believes that most great paintings don’t originate in the mind but in the expression of a soul’s inner essence, perhaps at the quantum level during the painting’s creation. To test this, he’s trying out a new technique that he likes to call “Fusionism of Color.” He believes this is a random occurrence where the colors blend in a non-traditional way on the canvas while still maintaining a sense of balance. From canvas paintings to fashionable men’s ties, Mimmo has a passion for painting. Stop in and have a great Italian meal, and while you’re there, browse the art gracing the walls. You can also purchase a one-of-a kind hand painted tie for Dad while you’re there! Mimmo was born in Naples, Italy and moved to the U.S. in 1966. He was educated in the culinary and visual arts, and has been involved in the hospitality industry for over 40 years while continually pursuing and exploring his art. He is the owner of Mimmo’s Scampi Grill located at 2054 11th Avenue, Vero Beach, (772) 563-9766. He spends his winters in Vero Beach and his summers in Waynesville, North Carolina.

‘‘ By Luisa Piano, Proprietor, LUBA Luba Gift Shop & Art Studio 933 7th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL (203) 428-1882, lubagiftshop.com 40 May-June 2014

My goal is to give exceptional customer service every single time to every one of my customers. I am so thankful. I value not only their business but their relationship with me. I want my clients to know that when they come to my shop, not only are they going to enjoy the experience but more importantly, whatever they buy at LUBA they will find beauty, care, quality, and a uniqueness in every single product.”

~ Luisa Piano, Proprietor, LUBA

s I approached my mid-forties, I decided it was time to make my long time dream come true, and finally open my own shop. My dream began as a child. I remember getting so thrilled to go to the small paper store in my neighborhood in Portugal, where the owner always greeted me and made me feel special. The whole experience was so enjoyable and that feeling has stayed with me forever. Back then, I used to save all of the unused stationary, pens and pencils I bought in a special drawer. These simple little items were secret cherished treasures to me. When I moved to Brazil with my family at the age of 8, there too I found “my small paper store,” which still exists today with the same owner that I knew when I was 8 years old. The owner is growing very old now, but still happily working. As I grew up my passions expanded and I started to paint. I love and appreciate all aspects of art and handmade quality work. My artistic little seed was always there. It wasn’t until I realized that those one-of-a-kind small shops where you find unique, quality products and have a personal connection with the owner were becoming harder and harder to find. For me, that’s how LUBA became a reality. It is my mission to bring back that kind of personal customer service while supporting artisans and artists, who are committed to their art. Each product is made with special attention to quality and shows the artist’s passion and love for their creations. For me, a greeting card, a handmade bar of soap or a candle that is carefully produced has an equivalent value as any piece of fine art. There is beauty in every little piece and LUBA values that. At LUBA, we strive to carry a wide variety of handmade, high quality gifts from the U.S., Portugal and Brazil. We also have accessories for the home including linens, pillows, candles, ceramics and art, as well as handcrafted paper products, t-shirts, jewelry, books and gifts for children. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Collaborative Community Effort Makes Downtown Vero Beach Blossom

M

ain Street Vero Beach’s annual Adopt-A-Pot and Banners2Baskets programs encourage great sponsorship opportunities for people to invest in a brighter Downtown. The “Season of Color” is designed to bring individuals, businesses and organizations together to beautify Downtown and engage in programs that increase civic responsibility and community pride. Main Street Vero Beach (MSVB) in a collaborative effort with nine local landscape professionals, the City of Vero Beach, and dozens of committed community businesses and volunteers, have completed a number of colorful streetscape improvements that are making Historic Downtown blossom. The newly planted garden container pots, hanging flower baskets and bright banners have people slowing down to take notice of the lush and colorful scenery of Downtown that incorporates Vero Beach’s unique history while simultaneously celebrates the fact that the ‘Hibiscus’ City’ is vibrant and alive thanks to a caring community. Of the vibrant banners that now hang from traditional decorative street poles; a teal one depicts local artist Conrad Pickel’s familiar Downtown Vero Hibiscus mosaic, and a coral one serves as Main Street’s graphic representation of the Pocahontas and Theatre buildings, two of Downtown Vero Beach’s original buildings. During the summer months, the hanging baskets will be home to hot-weather flowers and ferns, while the street banners will be on display through next October. From now until the end of June, a bountiful botanical display of palms, gardenias, crotons, begonias, geraniums and other flora will spill from 20 large pots and seven hanging baskets located along 14th Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets. The recent Downtown beautification efforts began when MSVB’s Design Committee, chaired by Robin Pelensky, ASLA, issued an Xtreme Garden Pots & Baskets Challenge to local landscape professionals and nurseries. They were invited to fill and maintain irrigated planter pots and hanging baskets with blooming flowers and fresh greenery right in the heart of Vero Beach. Artfully Designed

W

hat do you want your home to say about you and your lifestyle? Many homeowners don’t think about those things when buying a new home or remodeling an existing home. One of the easiest ways to instill your lifestyle vibe in a home is by what you hang on the walls. Art is a great way to express yourself! Your final selection should always be something that has meaning to you. Do not be swayed into something that fits or complements something else in the room. It’s usually the designer who starts the discussion so that you can have a finished product that reflects your style and taste in furnishings. Remember what I said before; taste, vision and passion are the key elements to design. If your designer does not exhibit these qualities, it’s time to move on. If you can shock, dismay and challenge the viewer, then you’ve done a great job. If you have a choice, go for the bigger piece. A dominant large wall just screams for a huge statement of art. Consider stretched canvas without a frame for your big statement piece. They look great and are more flexible. Groupings of art in various sizes can be fun, but are more challenging. Don’t worry about the frames matching (so boring). Just don’t overdo it and please no collection of dinner plates that make you dizzy looking at them. In famous design magazines today, you can see COWS on a living room wall or dead birds, or whatever; I don’t get it! That’s beyond shock and dismay. Make sure your choice is something you will enjoy today and for many tomorrows. It’s time for that glass of fine wine... See you in the next issue of PORTFOLIO, when we do a major interior design makeover.

Diary of Jaybee

J

aybee’s record indicates that he was born in 1973. He is castrated, knows how to use utensils and has been known to put on clothes; evidence that he spent his first years in the entertainment industry or as someone’s pet. However, all we know for certain is that from 1985 to 1995, Jaybee lived at the now defunct Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP) in New York. While at LEMSIP, Jaybee lived alone in a small barren cage where he was anesthetized with Ketamine over 150 times, had at least 19 liver biopsies and had a lymph node removed. In 1996, when LEMSIP closed, Jaybee was sent to the Coulston Foundation in Alamogordo, New Mexico; a biomedical laboratory with the worst record of primate care in the history of the Animal Welfare Act. Upon taking over the property previously owned by the Coulston Foundation and the 266 chimpanzees kept there in September 2002, Save the Chimps’ founder Carole Noon, Ph.D., discovered Jaybee alone in a small cage making a “nest” out of leftover monkey chow. He was arranging the small biscuits in a circle around himself before lying down. Dr. Noon’s heart broke and she immediately gave Jaybee a bed sheet. He was thrilled; it seemed that he had stopped expecting both kindness from humans and the most basic physical comforts. Jaybee made a nest with the sheet and having no reason to expect he would receive another one, kept his sheet clean and dry, refusing to give it up for three days. Since Save the Chimps arrived in Alamogordo, Jaybee has not spent a single night without a cozy nest of blankets or a day without fresh fruit, access to quality on site veterinarians and loving and respectful care. It is now common to see Jaybee atop a pile of blankets, completely draped with only his face peeking out. In July 2008, Jaybee and his group made a cross-country journey from Alamogordo to Save the Chimps’ Fort Pierce. In Florida, Jaybee is free to run in the sunshine or cozy up under a tree with blankets close at hand.

To adopt a chimp like Jaybee, please visit www.savethechimps.org and get involved. They need our help.

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

horoscope

Never a dull moment, as the planets continue to spin above our heads, making for very interesting times for all of us. For the next two months, we have some good times for all the water signs (Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio). The rest of us are still on a bit of a roller coaster. ARIES: All Aries people are still in a high voltage period of enormous, and often uncomfortable, change. The end of June is a particularly intense time. Try to know that “this too shall pass”, and that change can be good! TAURUS: Early May could put you into a funk with someone cramping your style. Early June is fantastic for Taurus as a golden aspect graces you with good fortune. GEMINI: Things that need to get done will finally get done. Gemini’s do not like to be pinned down, but it seems you are getting very focused on closing one door so you can open another. When the planet of love visits Gemini at the end of June, you will be smiling. CANCER: May is awesome. A wonderful grand aspect for the watery crab means that you are finally getting to reap rewards for all your hard efforts over the last several years. The end of June is also very auspicious. LEO: When the Moon is in Leo in early June, you may be in the spotlight for something you have achieved. Remember you are the most regal sign in the Zodiac, and you are supposed to strut your “stuff.” VIRGO: If you are in battle, whether it is a legal battle or any other fight, know that in early May someone may be hiding the truth from you. If you double check everything and keep your eyes open, these next two months will be smooth for you.

62 May-June 2014

LIBRA: This period may test you. Especially around June 25th when there are aspects that are a bit fierce for all Libras. You are good at keeping things in balance, so if anyone can handle stress, it’s you. SCORPIO: Even though you’ve seen a lot of changes in the last year with the basic structure of your life, you are finally seeing the rewards for all your hard work. The lessons you have learned and the progress you have made will finally pay off. SAGITTARIUS: You are normally a pretty easygoing sign, but the end of June sees you in rather a feisty mood. You are the archer with a bow and arrow, so just make sure you don’t pierce anyone during this time. CAPRICORN: During May, it looks like you’re trotting along at a decent velocity and then KABAM! mid June seems to test you at the very core of your being. Just learn the lesson and keep moving on. AQUARIUS: As everyone around you seems to be in high turmoil, you are in the eye of the storm. Keep sharing your wisdom. Your humanitarian nature is much appreciated by others. PISCES: Like all the other water signs, the fish are happily swimming with nice aspects in May and June. The end of June is particularly nice and romantic too.

Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
