This issue is dedicated to amazing women. You know who you are. You’re crazy passionate. You dream in color. You work hard, VERY hard. You juggle and multi-task, and sleep is something you can do when you’re dead. I get your vibe. You’re my tribe. Women are very determined. They can move mountains. I am always in awe of my mother. She raised three children with little help from my father. She never earned more than $25,000 per year. She was the first strong woman that I looked up to. She has held my hand every step of the way. I cannot imagine my life without her. Dream big. My husband jokes that I live in “la-la land.” I never take life too seriously. (Stressing over things won’t change the outcome, it just makes you sick.) I’ve always had a very strong work ethic. Most of my career was spent in law firms as a paralegal. I’ve always been crazy about crisp linen paper, creative writing, and fonts. Never in a million years did I think I would own my own magazine. It has been four years now. Connecting and helping others is the best part of my job. Life is not a competition. Discover what fuels your inner fire and just DO IT, no matter what your age! In this issue, we’ve spotlighted a few young women entrepreneurs that are following their passion. They decided to be their own #girlboss. We’ve also showcased some amazingly strong and brave women in our community. Women can inspire other women. We’re fierce, when we need to be. Women have this sisterhood, and together, we can do incredible things. We should always try to empower each other. Surround yourself with positive women that see your greatness, even when you don’t see it yourself.

ABOUT OUR PHOTOGRAPHERS Our cover photo was shot by Lyndsay Cunningham. This issue is dedicated to all the amazing women out there. The cover model is my beautiful daughter, Alyssa, who will be a senior this coming year. The little clown fish model was unharmed and was provided to us by Nancy Pham, marine lab manager, who ensured to his safety and care. Shot on location at the Marine Laboratory Tracking Station in Vero.

Lyndsay Cunningham is a Vero Beach native that has always had a passion for horses and photography. Throughout her life, she has traveled the country as an upper level 3-Day event rider (similar to a triathlon) with her horses. After high school, she moved to Boston to train with a well-known rider. Her days were spent riding and training, and at night she took classes at Boston University. This is where her passion for photography came to life. She took an evening course with John Robaton, a National Geographic photographer. He taught her the basics of the camera and how to manipulate photos in the development process inside a dark room. With the advent of new digital technology, Lyndsay now uses her Canon to document the outdoors, family, farm life, sea life, and all that Mother Nature has to offer! You can follow her daily adventures on Instagram @Lyndsay_ Cunningham or visit her horse farm here in Vero Beach. Lyndsay teaches riding lessons, travels to horse shows, and always has quality sport horses for sale. Visit www.highhopeseventing.com for more information. Lyndsay is thrilled to be a part of our Portfolio family and she’s excited about our readers being a part of her photography journey! @Lyndsay_Cunningham lyndsaycunninghamphotography.com Brandee Anthony is a professional photographer, new to the Vero Beach scene. There’s a New Barre in Town: Vero Beach Yoga Barre

T

here’s a new fitness studio in town, inspired by the friendship of two ambitious young women. Carly Barnes moved back to her hometown with the dream of starting a business. After spending four years in Charleston and a summer in New York City, she took the best practices and intricacies from the yoga studios she encountered along the way and decided to open a unique studio in Vero Beach. Barnes reached out to her first yoga teacher, Amanda Steadman, with the hope that she would join her in this endeavor. “Amanda’s unique teaching style, compassion for her students, and kind heart inspired me to continue to pursue yoga throughout high school and college,” Barnes explains. Without much hesitation, the two were signing a lease at 29 Royal Palm Pointe, Suite 2. Soon after, Vero Beach Yoga Barre was born. “I never thought my dream of opening a studio would come to fruition at the age of 23,” says Barnes. Barnes has taken on the role of manager and handles studio business, and teaches one class per week. Steadman focuses primarily on teaching and is a frequent fixture on the class schedule. 16

May-June 2016

Vero Beach Yoga Barre offers a variety of yoga and barre classes to complement one another. Barre has been around for years, and has recently become a popular fitness class throughout the United States and abroad. It’s a low-impact, aerobic workout that incorporates ballet positions to target the muscles of the legs, core and upper body, with targeted stretching after every technique. There are a variety of yoga classes at the Vero Beach Yoga Barre, including vinyasa, heated power flow, yin and ashtanga. Barre offerings include classes for all levels, such as barre basic, barre body, and barre shape. The 1,500 square foot space boasts two separate rooms furnished with props and equipment made by Manduka. In the retail boutique, you can find Liquido Leggings, Manduka Mats, Volcano Candles, Spiritual Gangster Loungewear, and more. Barnes, Steadman and the instructors at the studio encourage anyone who is new to the practice to come experience the positive energy and welcoming community at Vero Beach Yoga Barre. Hard Work, Sweet Rewards

shlee Wykoff, 26, became a business owner at just 19 years old. In 2009, she opened Frosting, the beachside pink-ified cupcake and specialty cake shop on Cardinal Drive in Vero Beach. Always an artist, Wykoff also loved to bake, and decided to combine her love of buttercream with her love of art. “I’ve always been artistic, so I thought cake could be a new medium,” she says. “And it just came naturally.” And natural it was. Wykoff is completely self-taught in both baking and decorating. From simple birthday cakes to 10-foot-tall wedding cakes and life-sized sculpted cakes, there’s nothing she can’t create. Open seven years, Frosting was chosen as “South Florida’s Best Wedding Cakes” by The Knot magazine’s “Best of Weddings” for 2014, 2015, and 2016. Wykoff has made sweet treats for celebrities like Rachael Ray, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

In 2015, Wykoff and her family opened their latest creative venture, a coffee and wine bar, Grind + Grape. Located on Bougainvillea Lane, G+G features Italian espresso, brewed coffee drinks, and pastries by Frosting. By evenings it becomes a nightlife venue with beer and wine, small plates, desserts by Frosting, and live music. “We transform from day to night and it’s exciting to pair food and my desserts with wine,” Wykoff says. “I like to think of Grind + Grape as the grown up version of Frosting.” Since discovering a new passion for food and wine, Wykoff studies wine and pairings in her spare time (if she has any) and has received her Level 2 Award from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. “I’d love to study to be a certified sommelier, if I can find the time,” she laughs. But Wykoff is no stranger to hard work and attributes her success at a young age to her dedication and work ethic. “I have pulled many all-nighters working. I think my record is from our first year at Frosting, working 72 hours straight.” This month, Grind + Grape is celebrating its one year anniversary. “We are excited for the future and things to come, including a craft cocktail menu,” says Wykoff. “We want to keep evolving.”

#grace The Evolution of Seahorse Lane Boutique

S

eahorse Lane Boutique was born from a time of intense soul-searching. Audrey Mosel was fresh out of college and eager to pursue her passions. With a nudge from her fiancé (now husband) she created a Facebook page in 2012 and called it Seahorse Lane Boutique, affectionately named after the street she was living on at the time. In the beginning, it wasn’t fancy or professional. It was simply a girl with a knack for fashion and a passion to help people find cute, trendy clothing and jewelry. With the lack of fun and affordable boutiques, Audrey knew there was a market to tap into and she was ready to dig in. Audrey worked a 9 to 5 job in the insurance field while she expanded her business with social media. She would set up at a local beach market on Thursday nights to sell her jewelry and accessories. She handmade some of the items and the others she would buy from wholesale markets, ultimately curating the boutique look she desired, but couldn’t find in town. Fast-forward to 2015, Audrey was downtown and discovered a lovely space for rent. Without hesitation, she and her husband decided it was time to take a leap of faith. The boutique opened in May 2015 with three racks of clothing and jewelry. Renovations were completed soon after and she began to see her business come to life. Audrey is celebrating her first year in business— a wonderful success! Her talent for styling outfits and love for connecting with people is evident in the attention she and her employees give to each customer. It’s her goal to bring stylish and affordable clothes to her customers in an inviting, fun, and trendy atmosphere. Audrey credits God for opening up the doors to her business and placing this desire in her heart. It’s her passion to care for her customers and create a space of grace where they can be themselves and feel at home. She hopes Seahorse Lane Boutique will become an iconic Vero store for locals and visitors alike. Seahorse Lane Boutique is located at 1981 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach. I

A Passion for Fashion

chose the name Shotguns and Seashells for my blog because I wanted to express the different facets of my life. “Shotguns” is a tribute to my southern side, where I enjoy horseback riding, being out at the farm, and hunting. “Seashells” describes my coastal lifestyle of relaxing at the beach and shopping on Ocean Drive. I also wanted a name that embodies the Alabama/Florida lifestyle when I was going to school in Tuscaloosa. It’s where the country meets the beach…and living in Vero Beach, you get the best of both worlds. Shotguns and Seashells is a way for me to express my personal style. I love fashion and I’m always excited to see the new trends. I have a very coastal sense of style and love to be in bright colors. Dresses are my favorite… second to cowboy boots and jeans. Having a blog is a hobby and a very large commitment, but it’s something I truly enjoy. I love getting feedback from my followers, especially those in the Vero Beach community. How did you get started in fashion blogging? I started Shotguns and Seashells about two years ago when I was still in college. I took a fashion merchandising class where my professor encouraged me to start a blog. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Did you always know you were interested in fashion? Yes, my mom has worked at Sassy Boutique since I was born and has instilled a love of fashion in me from day one! What inspired you to become a fashion blogger? I’ve always admired other bloggers. I have a shopping obsession and I figured it was a great way to express my favorite styles and trends via social media. How would you describe your personal style? My style is a direct reflection of me. I grew up on the beach and out at the barn riding horses. I love soft, breathable fabrics that reflect a laid-back side of me. My favorite shoes are my cowboy boots and I’m not afraid to throw them on with just about any look. Another inspiration outlet for my style is our South Florida surroundings, filled with color and fun in the sun! At the end of the day, whether the look is classic, trendy or edgy, it is representing me and feels just right! Who is your biggest fashion inspiration? My two favorite bloggers are Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies, and Emily Ann Gemma from The Sweetest Thing. Both have a great, trendy sense of style. What would you say is the greatest satisfaction of being a fashion blogger? I love being able to help others stay on top of the trends and feel stylish! I also love to get compliments and comments on my blog, and from people in-person. It makes me feel good to know that people are paying attention to my content and what I’m expressing. I get so shy when someone mentions my blog because it’s not something I talk about with people… aside from my family and a few good friends. What is the most difficult thing about fashion blogging? The most difficult thing about fashion blogging is consistency and coordination. There are many steps involved before the “submit” button gets pushed, and a new post goes up. From outfit to photoshoot planning, and web design to marketing campaigns, I am forever coordinating Shotguns and Seashells, and trying to meet deadlines. Finding the time is certainly a challenge. Where do you find the inspiration for your blog posts? After graduating from The University of Alabama and moving home in December, I’ve viewed my surroundings a little differently. There are so many things about Vero that I never paid attention to until I started my blog. Now, I’m forever hunting for cool photo shoot locations, or new trends to bring to town that others might be afraid to try. What are your current fashion must-haves? My current must-haves are statement earrings, off the shoulder anything, lace up sandals, bold bags and little white dresses. However, my go-to look is jeans and a T-shirt. Do you have any advice for the other young, up-and-coming fashion bloggers? My advice for young bloggers would be to participate in everything and seize every opportunity. Do whatever you can to help spread the word and get your name out there. Building your following is a marathon, not a sprint. If you are truly passionate about what you do and let it grow organically, then it will be a truly successful and rewarding experience. Also, be ready to commit yourself to your blog 100 percent. And don’t be afraid to say “No” if something isn’t for you. By Chandler MacWilliam

I

A Dream Deferred, Then Realized

’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. My parents own their own business, and like a lot of kids, I grew up wanting to be like them. I liked the idea of being your own boss and taking pride in your work. My dad grew up in Dallas, Texas, but my mom and I were both raised in Vero. We’ve always loved how small and beautiful Vero is, but we’d often talk about the limited options for entertainment. We wished someone would open a place that stood apart from the bar and restaurant scene, but was still fun and open to any age. We looked forward to the day that someone would fill that void. In early 2013, we discovered a little paint-and-sip studio while visiting Texas. My parents and I discussed opening one in our hometown, thinking about how exciting it would be to have something fun for everyone. In the end, we filed the dream away and simply hoped that someone else would open one. One year later, my dad had a series of strokes. When he was out of danger and we stepped back to assess the damage, my mom and I knew that we had to help alleviate some of his physical and mental stress. A lot of those stresses came from his business. We wanted him to retire and stop working so hard, but we knew he couldn’t do that without some means of financial support for the family—and waiting for someone else wasn’t an option anymore. 22

Paint on the Vine opened its doors five months later. We host painting classes that aren’t like traditional painting classes. We employ local artists who break a painting down into easy-to-follow steps, so even the most uncreative person can follow along and create a work of art. Classes are typically two hours and all of our guests leave with their paintings, which they often hang on their walls at home and marvel at their unrealized artistic ability. On the business side of things, my mom and I are well suited to work side-by-side. We complement each other: she makes sure the business is running smoothly and I tackle the creative aspects of the studio. This arrangement plays to our strengths and divides the work almost perfectly in half. As for something to do in Vero that’s fun for everyone? Paint on the Vine exists because we made it happen ourselves…and that’s what being an entrepreneur is all about. We’re expanding our space. We are so thankful to our community for supporting us. Stop by and see it! Paint on the Vine is located at 1904 14th Avenue in Vero Beach. For more information, call (772) 562-3005 or visit PaintOnTheVine.com.

Miss Hibiscus

More than just a pretty face.

I

n 2004, 51 years since its original inception, the Hibiscus Festival and Miss Hibiscus pageant were once again hosted to celebrate this beautiful place in which we live. One year prior in the “Look Back in Time” section of the Press-Journal, appeared my MUCH younger self in a swimsuit with a “crown” of flowers perched on my head, and a caption reading, “Elizabeth Graves crowned Miss Hibiscus.” And if that isn’t bad enough, I was featured in the “50 years ago” section. Talk about wanting to hide! With that photograph however, interest was generated to reestablish the Hibiscus Festival. This time, Main Street Vero Beach was the organizer and a festival committee was formed in 2004. I was asked to be on this committee and to chair the pageant. I was reluctant, but Alma Lee Loy persuaded me to take the chairmanship by promising to help—and she did! When I told the festival committee my vision for the pageant, some insisted that a swimsuit competition be included. I told them that was fine, but I would not chair the committee. I believed young women had moved beyond the “bathing beauty” mindset, and my vision was to showcase their achievements, service to others, and their inner beauty. Apparently, they wanted me more than swimsuits. The 2004 pageant had 14 contestants and took place on a flatbed truck parked at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Highway 60. If that wasn’t bad enough, there was a band playing at the other 26

end of the block—a loud band. Only those very close to the “stage” could hear a word the contestants said! The judges did a great job however, and Rikki Klaus was crowned Miss Hibiscus 2004. In 2005, we moved to the Heritage Center and have remained there ever since. I continued to chair the committee for 11 years, passing the baton to Cindy Goetz in 2015. Goetz and I have worked together on the committee for several years, and she shares the vision for Miss Hibiscus. I’ve had many wonderful committee members, and together we have established a strong core emphasizing our vision and values. We always take time with those who serve as judges to make certain they understand that this is not a beauty contest. Since we began 13 years ago, more than 200 young women have participated in the Miss Hibiscus pageant. Our goal is to showcase the best this community has to offer. We must be doing something right, because the young women

who have won and participated have gone on to be productive citizens. We tell the girls each year that they are all winners, and these are not just “feel good” words. By entering, they have stepped outside their comfort zone, gained self-confidence, and made some wonderful new friends. Beyond that, they have shown this community the depth of character there is in our young people. My personal contact with these wonderful young women has blessed me far beyond what I have given. I still keep up with many of them, and I am proud to call them friends. The Miss Hibiscus pageant recognizes and promotes academic excellence, community and school service, high ethical standards, leadership qualities, and self-confidence. Man’s Best Friend Digs the Beach Beach etiquette during sea turtle nesting season.

S

ea turtles undergo a lot of stress during their lifetime. Some of that stress is due to the environment, like temperature or rainfall; human activity, coastal development, commercial fishing, and pollution; as well as predators, natural or introduced. Pet owners love bringing their dogs to the beach. It gives their best friend(s) more space to run, new smells to explore, and new environments to play in. Although it’s wonderful to let our pups explore our beautiful sandy beaches, they can sometimes do more harm than good. Indian River County is home to an average of almost 7,000 sea turtle nests per year. Only a small portion of those nests are marked with stakes, ribbon, and signs. That means the majority of nests go unmarked, and naturally are camouflaged in the sand. Our dogs are known for having great noses. When on the beach, they will dig and dig until they find that interesting new smell, which many times ends up being a turtle nest. Introduced pet dog predation is a growing concern in Indian River County. Our area is one of the most productive sea turtle nesting beaches in Florida and we want to keep our nests safe to conserve protected species. A great way to do that is to prevent our pets from digging in the sand, potentially impacting the success of turtles.

Turtle conservation best practices: Do:

• During sea turtle nesting season (March 1 through Oct. 1) turn off your beachfront white lights at night • Use reusable shopping bags – plastic bags can end up on the beach or in the ocean, where sea turtles might ingest them • Pick up trash on the beach and recycle it • Pick up dog waste and dispose of it properly • Knock down sandcastles and fill in holes that might impede a turtle’s path to/from its nesting site • Leave the beach better than you found it • Call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s 24-hour Wildlife Alert Number, 1-888-404-FWCC if you find a dead, injured or sick sea turtle

Do NOT: • Let your dog dig on the beach • Leave chairs, tents, and umbrellas on beach overnight • Approach a nesting turtle if walking the beach at night • Pick up a hatchling • Use white flashlights on beach at night (red filter recommended)

Staying Fit

C

Beyond 60

lean eating is just as important as maintaining a healthy physique. Believe it or not, Lori Long is beyond 60. She is a mother, grandmother, personal trainer, and lifestyle educator. From Long Island, New York, she spends most of her free time outdoors, loves boating, fishing, gardening, biking, surfing, and is always in search of those endless summer days. Her family’s health and wellness was always her first priority. Unfortunately, many of her family members were diagnosed with various forms of cancer. That wasn’t the only malady; heart disease, diabetes, and obesity also topped the list. “This hit me hard and I became passionate about trying to understand the “how” and “why.” This quest became the foundation that fueled my passion for my career. I found that lifestyle played a huge role in someone’s health. It wasn’t just about the environment, but what people ate, their exercise habits, job and family related stresses. These factors are largely in our control and have an impact on our longevity and quality of our life,” states Long. The new trend of the baby-boomers and younger generations are into preventative health options and cleaner eating. Long states that, “It’s largely up to us to create better daily habits to ensure a healthy and quality long life.” So, more than 31 years ago, Long packed up the winter coats for good and relocated her family to Vero Beach so she could spend more time with them outdoors, surrounded by plenty of fresh air and Florida sunshine. They started growing a garden as a year-round hobby. “Growing our own fruits and vegetables made good sense,” Long explains. “Society is always juggling schedules, eating on the run, and it is frustrating to find time for the proper physical fitness goals, too.” With age, weight loss can be impossible and difficult. Investing in a lifestyle educator, like Long, can help lead to lifestyle changes to optimize time and overall health. “If you want to add years to your life and life to your years, some habits may need to be adapted. With support, guidance and education, some simple changes will give a person amazing results,” Long says. “Having a healthy attitude along with emotional support creates a new healthy lifestyle. Let’s face it, in a very busy world, sometimes we need some balance in our life!”

According to Long, there is nothing more rewarding than for her clients to achieve balance in their lives through healthy choices and proper exercise. Her clients develop confidence and self-esteem along with an overall glow that shines through. “How we feel about ourselves in the world around us plays an important role in our health and wellness.” That is Long’s true passion and her gift is to create the BEST you can be, inside and out! Lori Long is a personal fitness instructor and a lifestyle educator. She works at various locations throughout Indian River County. To schedule a consultation, call (772) 538-4179.

Start Preparing for College Now, Sans Stress Set your child up for success with these tips.

I

t’s that time of year. As students prepare for summer break, the focus turns to the future. And while most parents hope for their kids to go to college, they don’t necessarily have a plan to make that happen. Here’s my [fresh] take on the things you need to do to set your child up for success. • Make a timeline. It’s obvious but it’s important. You need to know when you should take certain actions, and you need milestones. It’s the only way you’ll avoid completing everything at the last minute. • Be strategic about standardized tests. As much as we [should] debate the role of these tests, they’re crucial. Students should take the SAT and ACT early in their junior year. Determine which one fits your child, and focus on weak areas. For those thinking about top universities, take two to three SAT Subject Tests after finishing the subject in school. • Explore college options. Too often these are predefined, either by parents, peer pressure, etc. Kids end up at schools that don’t fit their personalities or objectives. The world is full of opportunity. Your child can attend a large state school, a small liberal arts college, a university in an urban area or in the middle of nowhere, or maybe even a university in Europe. Do your research. • Seek academic challenges. The jump from high school to college won’t be easy. The best way to prepare is to create challenges. Students should start taking AP classes in their sophomore or freshman year. They will be surprised at their ability to step up. Remember that honors and AP courses count more towards a weighted GPA, and colleges will always judge GPA in the context of how many AP classes were taken. Don’t take easy classes for easy grades. • Try different activities. Students shouldn’t do activities just because they look good on a resume. It won’t be authentic. On the other hand, www.portfolio-verobeach.com

don’t just play video games either. The more students explore, the better they’ll understand what they like. Getting involved in those activities looks much better than the kid that shows up to one meeting for 25 organizations. • Do something awesome during summers. Have we mentioned the word “opportunity?” Take advantage. I’m not talking about the summer course that costs $5,000 or that leadership conference your child was invited to (hint: we all were). Students should do substantial volunteer work, travel to new places, or start a project. They need to get out of their comfort zones. By placing your child in new situations, it will challenge his or her ideas and perspectives. From experience, we can say that those students write the best application essays. But it’s not even about that. It’s about discovering what’s out there. Alessandro Bordoli is a graduate of Vero Beach High School, where he finished second in his class. He studied Political Science and Economics at Georgetown University and the University of Florida, and just finished a dual master’s of science degree in economics from the Sorbonne in Paris, France and Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Last year, he launched his own business at the age of 26, Brand: U, to provide individualized college application planning and counselling, and help students realize the unprecedented opportunities out there today. He also spends his spare time running a non-profit he founded, education: access, based in rural India. To learn more about Brand: U, visit YourCollegeBrand.com, or call (772) 360-4618.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Meet the dream team at Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery Elite Physiques.

C

hristopher Gurny (Ocean Drive Elite Physiques) and Dr. Alan Durkin (Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery) had one goal in mind when they decided to bring a completely new concept to Vero Beach: improve quality of life. The two have combined aesthetic medicine, cosmetic surgery, customized fitness programs, and individualized nutrition to enhance and fulfill the lives of their clients and patients. “I felt like we needed to tap into the next level of wellness,” says Gurny. “I believe Dr. Durkin and I have found the most effective results driven method to achieve the goals of our clients. It’s exciting, after so many years in our respected industries and now everything feels brand new.” Progress isn’t just going down a dress size, it’s feeling and looking healthy inside and out. Finding the balance between the beautiful life and a healthy life is now more possible than ever. With more than 25 years of experience, Gurny is no rookie when it comes to health and fitness. He developed his passion for fitness as a collegiate baseball player and then bodybuilder. Gurny opened his first private center, Elite Physiques, in 2000 and has been blessed to work with a wide range of clients including famous actors, local enthusiasts, fitness pros, and professional athletes. For clients to achieve the best possible results, Elite now offers personal fitness training, mixed martial arts training, performance and competition, weight loss, beachside bootcamps, and nutrition. Nutrition is an imperative part of making these programs work. The Ocean Drive Elite team offers physician-supervised nutritional programs monitored by regular consultations, real-time virtual consultations throughout the week, quarterly laboratory exams, and body mass composition. There are no cookie cutter workouts at Elite; every session is carefully structured for each individual client. “Chris amazes me with how he effortlessly builds rapport with everyone he meets. He has the ability to relate to clients of any age, and it is truly a gift that sets him apart,” says his wife, Kristin Dobson. “I strive to be the best role model and inspire my younger clients as well as my kids. I teach them to work hard and always try their best, if they do that, they can do anything in life,” says Gurny. With seven expert trainers and two registered dieticians who put clients first, you’re guaranteed to leave every workout with a smile at Ocean Drive Elite. Dr. Alan Durkin is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, CEO, and owner of Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery. “My job is to get you the best possible result in the safest possible fashion with the least amount of surgery,” says Dr. Durkin.

36

May-June 2016

Continuing to make investments in his patients, Dr. Durkin sees the importance of combining his practice with the fitness programs offered by Ocean Drive Elite. “Our patients can benefit from a combination of cosmetic surgery, physical fitness, and nutrition programs because these lifestyle choices go hand-in-hand to optimize surgical outcomes, patient safety, and to help our patients to maintain their aesthetic results,” says Dr. Durkin. The dream team is focused on packaging fitness and nutrition into the mix for patients to understand the best ways to maintain their results. Vitamin fusion therapy is now offered and original fusion cocktails are prepared and administered on an as needed basis. “Fitness competitors are especially tough on their skin when getting ready for the big stage. Our vitamin fusion therapy can help restore that damaged skin,” says Dr. Roxanne Durkin. When choosing Dr. Alan Durkin, patients will enjoy a newly remodeled and fully renovated state-of-the-art surgical facility in a warm and welcoming environment. Patients have the privacy of overnight suites, VIP entrances, personalized medical attention, house calls, and private duty nursing. Snook go out of season May 15th until September 1st. Please release them carefully as this is their spawning time.

Summer Heat Changes the Game

Bring on summer and the return of adult tarpon to the Treasure Coast.

• May and June are very warm months with water temperatures almost as high as the air temperature. For this reason, early morning and late afternoon will be the best times to fish. The fish react to the heat just like we do, except they don’t have air conditioning. Look for deeper water that stays cooler and shady areas along docks. These will be your best bets for summer fishing. • The beach will be calm and clear, so if you decide to walk the beach, bring a rod. Tarpon, snook, and large jacks will be the main target inshore. Offshore, the dolphin (mahi-mahi) will be in full swing, along with great king mackerel close to the beach. Look for birds diving and you’ll be sure to hook up. • This is Capt. Christian Yergens wishing you all tight lines and safe boating. Please practice catch and release so future generations can enjoy our local waters for years to come. To book a charter, call (772) 643-2735 or visit CNYOnTheFly.com. 38

Woman Owned

Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company

I

’m in awe of my mother, Marygrace Sexton, and her establishment of the company that bears my name, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company. Wife to a citrus grove owner, she fulfilled the family’s dream of creating its own specialty brand while carrying my sister and me in tow! Now, she leads an award-winning company. Born into this business, I have a solid foundation already in place. I won’t have the thrill of building something from the ground-up. Studies suggest that missing out on this key component of the entrepreneurial journey can spell trouble for the next generation, especially when it’s time for them to take the reins. Children destined to take over a family business are often coddled and protected by their parents, sheltered from taking risks and suffering failures. When it’s time to take over, experts say they are often missing necessary life experience and skill sets to run the business successfully. Their level of commitment and passion are also called into question, which may explain why many multi-generational businesses fail. Only 30 percent make it. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. While I recognize my mother has offered me the opportunity of a lifetime, there are still incredible challenges facing my sister and me as we work to expand the brand. Below are five reasons we’re confident Natalie’s will continue for generations to come. These tips will help any entrepreneur judge the viability of letting the family continue with the business. 1) Don’t be afraid to let your kids fail. My mother will tell you this is the toughest challenge of all. It’s natural that maternal instinct will have entrepreneurial parents saving their children from the pitfalls of life. She understands the importance of trial and error, success and failure. She let my sister and I stumble through tough business lessons – giving us much-needed experience. 2) Stay committed to a core set of values. At Natalie’s, we’re committed to the Florida farmer and dedicated to providing the best product available. We stick by this credo and weigh the value of every business decision against it. Live your company’s mission statement. Make sure your children understand, honor and live it, too. 3) Know your next generation’s passions. If I wanted to become an actress and follow a path I was passionate about, I hope my mother would let me roll with it. Often, entrepreneurs trap their children in a career for which they have no interest. My acting chops aren’t so great. It was clear my love for our state’s wonderful bounty of citrus was my destiny. I’ve used my passion for communicating and marketing its benefits to carve out a satisfying career. 4) Let go, when you choose to let go. Parents have trouble letting their “babies” go, whether that baby is biological or commercial. Just as parents need to give their children a chance to fail, they must also adopt a hands-off policy when the next generation takes over. 42

May-June 2016

5) Succeed and repeat. Remember the things that made you successfu—and repeat them with your children if they choose to embrace the challenge of taking over the business. I

was 14 when I got my first job. I was paid $1 per hour to work as a counter girl at a pizzeria run by an “old school” Italian family. The pizza makers were Italian men who spoke broken English. I wanted to be a pizza girl so badly, but they ranted that “Only men make pizza! Little girls like you could never throw a pizza!” So, I taught myself how to throw a pizza pie by practicing with dish towels. One day, I came to work and defiantly told those old men that girls can do anything they put their minds to! I proceeded to put on a beautiful show, throwing the dough higher and higher, making the perfect thin crust pizza. They cheered and clapped! Soon, I was promoted to the first pizza girl at Figaro’s Restaurant in North Miami Beach! The moral of the story is “Never give up.” You can do anything if you work hard. If you don’t know what you’re doing, act as if you do, then figure it out! That’s how I got my real estate license. The Bee Gees were clients of mine and one day, they asked me to find a realtor. I immediately took the Bert Rogers School of Real Estate crash course and became a licensed real Frazier at within work and home at the beach. estate agent twoatweeks.

44

May-June 2016

I sold the Bee Gees three mansions on Miami Beach. Did I know what I was doing? Heck no, but I hung my license with the best broker in town. She held my hand and taught me everything she knew. I’m so grateful to work and live in our beautiful community selling luxury homes. However, life wasn’t always good. When my daughter Lily was in tenth grade, she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. The support we received from our friends in Vero was beyond anything we could have hope for. We felt so loved and protected. Lily’s doctors were there for us 24 hours a day, especially Dr. Susie O’ Toole and her staff. There are no words to describe how indebted I am to the amazing people that touched our lives at such a challenging time. That’s why I’m doing Dancing with Vero Stars. I want to give back. I was so inspired by Dr O’ Toole. She always gives back, in addition to working full time at her pediatric practice. If she can devote her time to this, I can, too. After Lily recovered, the world started to look brighter. Then, I got cancer. I fought the hard fight and decided after my five-year checkup that if I was “cured” I would be a part of this great fundraiser. It’s a way of showing my thanks to my wonderful doctors. Dr. Ted Perry, Dr. Greg MacKay, Dr. Fred Weeks, Dr. Stuart Buyer, and Dr. Michael Wein, these amazing physicians helped me more than they know. Growing Up in the Kitchen

The kitchen is where we get closer to the people we love.

E

very Sunday, my brothers and I woke to the sounds of mom in the kitchen: the blender roaring and the sizzle of the frying pan; the smell of fresh garlic, onions, and basil. It meant mom was making meatballs and sauce. However, it didn’t stop here. It was like this every day. It seemed mom was always whipping up a fantastic meal, and we all sat together and enjoyed it as a family. Holidays were no different. My childhood memories are of family and friends sitting together at a table with an aroma in the house that could never be forgotten. Grandma cooked all week for this special day. The house was filled with loud voices, laughter and tons of love, while we passed around delicious food. And after dinner, out came the freshly baked desserts and coffee as we gathered around the table. The kitchen wasn’t just for dinner. It’s where you found mom and dad to help with homework and have a snack. It’s where you always had a place

46

May-June 2016

to sit, share stories, and enjoy one another. We gather around food, but the kitchen is where we get closer to the people we love. That’s why my favorite place is in the kitchen with my kids. I love to show them the way I was taught to cook. I love to hear their questions and see the enjoyment they get from eating something that they made. Growing up Italian meant cooking, eating, and being with my family. Every day revolved around the kitchen and it’s where memories were made. estled between two canals off the Indian River Lagoon, on Royal Palm Pointe, I am constantly reminded of the ancient traditions we continue at A Bead Above. “Wampam” beads were the coin of the Native American Indians. These beads were white, fashioned from the North Atlantic whelk oyster. The violet hue comes from the growth rings of the Western Atlantic hard-shell clam. Eagles Feather in Glass The traditional producers of the with Black Spinel beads came from Little Oyster Island, now known as the isle of Manhattan. In 1626, beads were a universal currency. Of course, you probably recall that the isle was sold to the Dutch for 60 guilders worth of beads, buttons, and trinkets. These were no ordinary beads. They were Venetian glass beads in an array of bright jewel colors not seen on this continent before, considered very rare. The part of the story often untold in history class is that later, (1664) the Dutch exchanged New Amsterdam to the English for nutmeg. Yes, you read that right…nutmeg and war for Run Island. 48

Pearls & Gold Fan Tassel Earrings

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, Venice was ushering in the European Pearl Age. Once the greatest trading center in the world, pearls were at the height of desirability. So much so that officials considered pearls as a reckless extravagance and passed laws in an attempt to eradicate them. Husbands were fined a “pearl tax” and families faced possible banishment should their wives appear in public with excess pearls. Fortunately, times have changed. The Cherokee Tribe has its first female chief, her last name is “Mankiller.” Now, everyday is an opportunity to wear your pearls or shells. At A Bead Above, the selection of available colors is excellent. We will hand-knot them right here to any length you desire. We have glass and shell beads, as well as jewelry, and we also teach basic beading skills to beginners. Please, call us for an appointment or visit online at www.abeadabove.us. s a 6-year-old, my favorite subject in school was handwriting. Fast-forward 20 years later to girl’s night at a friend’s house. There’s a modern calligraphy class streaming on the TV, and that’s where dreams of making this a business began. I immediately fell in love all over again with practicing pretty writing, and I haven’t put the calligraphy pen down since! With lots of encouragement, I decided to post some pictures of my work and open an online Etsy shop, “Swirls and Sunshine.” The name came from my hope of bringing sunshine and light to people’s lives, homes, and events through the swirls of my lettering. I love working with clients to create home decor, gifts and custom designs; however, wedding commissions are always my favorite. Hearing

brides’ visions and ideas for their big day is so much fun, and I love collaborating with each client to incorporate calligraphy and hand lettered details into their event. It is such a privilege to be entrusted with so many fine details that have so much meaning behind them, and I love hearing stories that inspired custom pieces. Some services I provide include envelope addressing, handwritten invitation design, table numbers, escort cards, seating charts, and wood signage. No job or idea is too big or too small, and practically any surface can be embellished with handwritten details! I am so thankful for the opportunity to pursue this passion, and am especially grateful for the support I have received from my hometown of Vero Beach. I look forward to bringing ideas to life for many more clients and watching my business flourish. Meet Captain Ron The Sea Turtle Egg Sniffing Conservation Dog

W

hen it comes to finding and protecting sea turtle nests, the nose knows. That is, if the nose belongs to a spunky, two-year-old little pocket beagle named Captain Ron. For several days a week during the height of sea turtle nesting season (mid-June through mid-August), Captain Ron and his trainer, Pepe Peruyero, join Disney’s Conservation Team at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort in the early hours of the morning to help locate sea turtle nests eggs laid left the night before. But this dog is much more than just a talented sniffer; he is an ambassador for conservation! The 5-mile stretch of beach surrounding Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is a hotspot for turtle nesting activity, and three species regularly nest there, including loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles. Despite the different challenges associated with locating nests of each species, Captain Ron is always up to the task. So how did a dog learn to locate freshly laid sea turtle eggs in the sand? Captain Ron was trained to smell for the fluid that coats the eggs during

the laying process. He spent months in training with Pepe prior to last year’s nesting season, and when the moment came for Captain Ron’s first field test (and first trip to the beach), he alerted in perfect form to each nest he was shown! The Disney Conservation Team is looking forward to another fun and productive sea turtle season with Captain Ron’s help this year. Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Cast Members generate greater awareness and support for sea turtle conservation in many other ways. In addition to surveying for sea turtle nests daily, the team conducts conservation research, offers educational programs for guests, and partners with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to host the annual Tour de Turtles, which follows the marathon migration of sea turtles, at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. Since 1986, Disney veterinarians and animal care professionals have rehabilitated more than 300 sea turtles and successfully returned them back to the ocean. The Disney Conservation Fund has also directed more than $2 million to sea turtle conservation efforts worldwide. To learn more about Disney’s sea turtles efforts visit DisneyAnimals.com

Spring Is In the Air! Be wary of toxic plants.

F

lowers are blooming. Nature is a kaleidoscope of color and fragrance this time of year. Warm weather beckons you and your pet to enjoy a walk amidst the beauty and splendor so enjoyably unique to the Treasure Coast. What is there to be concerned with? Plenty! Just look around. Those attractive colors and inviting scents could be harmful to your four-legged loved ones. Before spending time with your furry friends outside, know which flora and fauna are toxic to them. Below is a list of some of the most common species found in our area. For a full list, visit ASPCA. com — you’ll find a comprehensive list of indoor and outdoor plants worth posting. Some might be from the florist rather than a gift from nature, but they require your consideration just the same. Enjoy the outdoors with your pet, but familiarize yourself with the local shrubs, flowering plants and trees that pose harm. Happy trails!

Toxic Plants:

Aloe Vera Amaryllis Apple Leaf Croton Asparagus Fern Azalea Baby’s Breath Bird of Paradise Caladium Calla Lily Chaming Dieffenbachia Clematis Croton Cuban Laurel (Ficus) Cutleaf Philodendron Cyclamen Daffodil Dieffenbachia Dracaena Palm

Easter Lily Elephant Ears English Ivy Kalanchoe Lily of the Valley Miniature Croton Mistletoe’ Morning Glory Narcissus Nightshade Oleander Onion Oriental Lily Poinsettia Poison Ivy Poison Oak Rhodendron Sago Palm Schefflera

G

reetings Eastsiders! Summer in Los Angeles and In-N-Out adding Sriracha to its secret sauce isn’t the only thing heating up out here. This beautiful weather has given me full authority to break out my white jeans and add fun pops of color to my traditional neutral look. The gorgeous blue jacaranda trees are making the short drive to my new favorite paddleboard spot at Seal Beach worth every extra mile. Californians fully embraced the short break after awards season, but each day, traffic significantly increases as music fest patrons arrive for Stagecoach and Coachella. Surprisingly, the festival headlines this year are more fashion- and food-focused than music. As an added bonus of festival season, if you take the time to check out the website or social media of your favorite fashion designers, you’ll often find sweet discount codes to apply when checking out. Make sure to follow “Infatuation” on Snapchat for live food reviews by the people, for the people in every city, especially their YUMtastic coverage of L.A. and Coachella. With temperatures rising, cool refreshing beverages are key and “Boba,” or Bubble Tea is all the rage. A personal favorite of mine is Boba 7, a combination of the highest quality tea with alcohol. Enjoy one-of-a-kind drinks such as the Bobagasm or the BuildaBoba… It’s the most delightful refreshment. Another local treat is “Cali’ Creamin’.” Mother Earth Brew Co. in downtown Vista has created a beer close to perfection. It’s a light, cream

64

ale with a malty backbone, and it has become quite the cult classic among cream soda lovers. If you’re looking for the perfect summer getaway, Terranea Resort is the place to be. It’s a luxury oceanfront vacation experience in L.A. on 102 acres, with unparalleled views of the Pacific. I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend at Terranea and instantly fell in love. Whether you’re solo, on a romantic retreat, or looking for a family vacation, it’s a fabulous destination. Learn more at Terranea.com. Reality TV fans: if there was ever a perfect opportunity to catch your favorite shows being filmed, summer is the time. Pilot season is coming to an end and filming has begun. So, if your L.A. goal is to run into a Real Housewife of Beverly Hills at happy hour or rub elbows with your favorite sitcom stars, tis’ the season y’all. Growing up in Vero Beach, you can imagine my excitement for the L.A. Dodgers opening day! If you grew up watching spring training at Dodgertown, then put on your blue and come support your team in LA LA Land. Speaking of sports, what a beautiful thing it is to see spring football practice in full bloom. The sweet sound of helmets smacking has got everybody counting down for football season. GO BRUINS!! I’m off to the Netflix headquarters for another classified meeting. Don’t forget your sunscreen this summer and I’ll see you on the West Side.

WHAT’S MORE THRILLING THAN VICTORY? HELPING SOMEONE ELSE ACHIEVE IT. There’s nothing quite like watching someone win a game or ascend a podium, knowing you helped make it possible. It’s the same feeling that drives Raymond James to put our clients – and our communities – first. Since our founding in 1962, giving back has been part of the fabric of our firm. And today, we’re proud to continue building on that legacy by standing alongside people and organizations who share our dedication to putting the goals of others first. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life

in the stars

As the temperatures climb, and the snowbirds head north, we begin the month of May with kinder aspect. Even though Mercury is retrograde from April 28May 22 this is a good time to reflect and redirect one’s energies to more internal pursuits. Goodwill prevails until we hit the end of June, when there is an astrological bump in the road. If you found May a little too quiet for your taste, just know that June will be a lot more lively, with more ups and downs.

LIBRA: During the last few months, you have had to juggle all your responsibilities, to the point of exhaustion. Fortunately, the month of May brings a much lighter load, and plenty of good times. Towards the end of May, look out for someone who might try to rush you into making a quick decision. Don’t allow anyone to pressure you, without taking the time you need to feel peaceful about the direction you want to head into. During the month of June, you might be pulled in many directions by friends who have lots of ideas for you to consider. You can afford to be picky. Just take your time, especially around the full moon on June 20.

ARIES: Most of the time, you like to go full speed ahead, but during the month of May, and especially during the full moon on May 21, it is a good time for you to slow down. Things get more intense on May 27 when you move back into high gear. Just make sure you trust your gut, especially regarding a person who you never really trusted in the past. June may bring an admirer. Make certain you put yourself out in the world around the new moon on June 4.

SCORPIO: Mercury will be moving retrograde until May 22, so this would not be the best time to make big decisions. Wait until May 30 when Mercury makes a spectacular aspect with powerful Pluto. Mars spends the month of June in your sign. It is time to find an athletic way to use all this extra energy. You will be oozing sexual energy, and you will be hard to not notice. Note the full moon on June 20 in your calendar, as you may need to keep a close eye on your personal finances.

TAURUS: There are a whole slew of planets in your sign this May, making for some delicious fun. You are attracting all sorts of positive offers, both on the work front and on the romantic side. Mercury turned retrograde in Taurus on April 28. Just realize you may need to spend some time meditating and not pushing, until Mercury goes direct on May 22. You have been pulled in a million directions for months, but finally during the month of June your new direction seems to be getting clearer.

SAGITTARIUS: All Sagittarius people tend to be energetic, however during the first half of May, you might find yourself enjoying a bit of restful solitude. Everything in the heavens in May is about being grounded in earth energies. Expect to be channeling all your firepower into useful projects that move you forward in life. Things might be heated up with a loved one on May 24. Try not to bicker, which you are known for. June brings romance and impulsivity. You love taking risks, but just make sure you ground your actions with words of comfort, so your partner is not too caught off guard.

GEMINI: You are one of the most sociable and charming signs of the Zodiac, and during the month of May your magnetic personality will spice up any social gathering. Between May 24-26 things get a little testy. Try not to let a small irritation turn into a big fiasco. Venus, the planet of love, is in your sign in June. You might be in a romantic relationship with someone who is trying to control you. Geminis love freedom, so you won’t tolerate that! CANCER: After the last two hectic months, you are more than ready for a mellow May. Friends will be there to support you, however around May 24, you may need to go into hibernation mode and rely less on what others say, and pay more attention to what you feel. The end of June is your time to shine, as the sun enters your sign. Also Venus, the planet of love will be in Cancer starting on June 17, so expect more happiness in the romance department. The full moon of June 20 is in the very last degree of Sagittarius, so you might feel like slamming a door on someone who has not been telling you the truth. LEO: Financial matters look like they are improving during the month of May. When Mercury turns direct on May 2, expect some positive increases to your bank account. Whatever you started to put into motion during March and April is now starting to pay off. June doesn’t allow for much rest, as a bunch of planets are in the restless sign of Gemini. Making money will be your priority. The full moon of June 20 has you wanting to vent some steam with someone who has been a thorn in your side. Just make sure you don’t say anything you will later regret. VIRGO: You won’t get much rest in May. Virgos do not like disorder, but there are some awkward aspects, especially around May 26. Don’t feel guilty if you need to back off and take some time for yourself. Everyone is so used to having you do the majority of what needs to be done, and it is OK to once in awhile say, “I need some space!” June brings some powerful support. If you’ve been trying to figure out how to make things easier in your life, you will probably get some great insights around June 26.

May-June 2016

CAPRICORN: The sky is bursting with good fortune for all Capricorn goats in May. You can count on feeling happily connected to friends and family who will enjoy spending time in your company. May 26 could be a difficult day, so lay low. The month of June has you dashing here and there for either work, or other commitments. You won’t have much time to relax, especially around June 22. If you’re thinking of taking some time off, wait until July. AQUARIUS: Aquarians tend to spend too much time on the computer, but during the month of May, the earthy sign of Taurus is packed with planets reminding you to get away from work and spend more time in nature. Domestic matters are calm for May, but after May 30 everything changes. It looks like you have a bevy of activity on the home front for all of June. You might need to help out family members who need either your money or your time. On June 29, lookout for a power struggle on the work front. PISCES: Prepare for all sorts of nice opportunities in early May as a whole parade of gentle and fun loving planets are stimulating your ruling planet, Neptune. The only tricky transit in May occurs on May 26, when you might have to deal with a stressful situation regarding an authority figure. June is a light-hearted month for Pisces people. Take time off to play. June 17 brings a testy aspect, which might force you to take a step backwards. Reconsider your relationship with someone who has been getting under your skin. Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
