I've Got the Summertime Blues

As I write this, I am suffering from spring fever. It happens every year at this time, like clockwork. Being an adventurous soul, I start daydreaming of summer adventures and start looking for new places to explore. I hope there is no cure for these summertime blues!

There’s just something magical about the beginning of summer. I don’t know if it’s the longer days where daylight seems never-ending or the humid summer nights. Whatever it is, it captivates me. I can’t wait to spend every moment outside. The summer months allow us to slow our roll, recharge our batteries, be less scheduled, and hopefully, spend more time doing the things we love. As a child, we had a summer lake house on the Clermont chain of lakes, and we looked forward to spending as much time there as possible. We would travel there in my grandparents Dodge van, eating Keebler Fudge Striped cookies (my Gran-Gran’s favorite),

and we’d stop along the way to pick up worms from a bait shop that was a tiny spot in the middle of massive orange groves. My Grammie and I were the sunrise seekers and we’d fish off our long dock every morning together! The summers were spent with our cousins and grandparents (and both our parents) exploring, waterskiing, fishing, catching fireflies, and riding in the orange groves that surrounded our 20 acres on Lake Louise. Those early summers of my childhood will forever be in my heart. These days, I wish we could go back in time to a simpler way of life, where we spent more time outside playing than inside or on electronic devices.

This issue is a special one in that it shares the memories of two local families that have been spending their summers (and lots of other occasions) in the Bahamas for generations. It’s told from the heart of the young women in the families that are now married, and starting their own families, with hopes to continue the legacy of their ancestors for generations to come.

As for my own family, we love traveling together to new and exciting places. This summer we hope to head over to the Bahamas as well, to start our own new family traditions.

Happy summertime!

Summer days, driftin' away…

The early months of summer are always our favorite. School ends, vacay begins. Of course, living in paradise is like living on summer-mode 24/7 to us. Get outside, take a walk or a nap on the beach, go for a swim, or travel. You’ll find us recharging our solar batteries!

Sea you at the beach!

14 May-June 2023 Portfolio-VeroBeach.com Summer Traditions Make for Lasting Memories

Growing up in Vero Beach, I spent every summer in the Bahamas. My family, along with many other residents, have called these islands their second home. People often wonder “why go to the Bahamas if you already live in paradise?” Well, let me tell you why. It’s the perfect place to relax, slow down, and recharge. Things don’t happen fast over there, which is why many people reference the saying “you’re living on island time.” It also has some of the most beautiful crystal clear, blue water and white sandy beaches with hardly anyone on them. It's a perfect destination for an avid boater, diver, or fisherman!

My family has been going to the Bahamas for over 30 years, along with me and my brothers since we were really little. We have many fond childhood memories of our summer adventures there. Days were spent snorkeling, fishing, exploring, treasure hunting, and even having a few intense hermit crab races. Since then, every summer, if we are lucky, my family tries to spend several weeks relaxing on island time. Although we’ve experienced many other islands, our favorite is Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos.

Both of these stories inspired me to share them with you, our readers, in hopes that they inspire you to create magical moments with your family and friends. Whether summer vacations are spent at home or away, it is a time to relax, reconnect with loved ones, and disconnect from the stresses of daily life. ~ Penny

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com May-June 2023 15

Green Turtle is one of the barrier islands or “out islands” off the mainland, Great Abaco. The only way to arrive is by boat, and the closest airport is Treasure Cay. Green Turtle, is a small island, only about 3 miles long, with about 450 local residents. Most businesses are family owned and operated, and have been that way for decades. One of our favorite things about Green Turtle is how small it is. It’s a wonderful community where you know almost everyone on the island, and we have built many friendships throughout all these years! On the island is a cute, little historic town called New Plymouth, with a few places to stop and shop around. There's a couple grocery stores, along with a few restaurants and bars to stop in and grab their signature rum drink and a bite to eat. Like any island, water and electricity outages are very common, but that never stops us from having a great time. When the power is out, we take that as an opportunity to get out on the water from sun-up to sun-down.

In 2014, I invited my now husband, Jeremy, to come with us on our family vacation to Green Turtle. It was a very memorable trip, which entailed my dad almost losing a finger to a moray eel, and ended with a 12-hour tow-boat ride back to Vero Beach (that’s a story for another time!) Even after all of that, Jeremy was hooked and he came with us every summer after that. After having so many amazing memories on the island together, it only felt right to have our wedding there surrounded by the beautiful blue Bahamian waters and all our friends and family.

In the days leading up to our departure to prepare for our wedding, Hurricane Nicole hit the Bahamas. We were very worried about the island and the locals as they were devastated 3 years prior by Hurricane Dorian and are still recovering. In planning our wedding, who would have thought we would have to worry about a hurricane in November? Although I grew up coming to the island, it was still a little overwhelming planning a full-blown wedding there. We knew we were in good hands with the Green Turtle Club, however, in the Bahamas you must always be able to ebb and flow like the sea, and you need to be very flexible with lots of Plan Bs!

Our wedding ceremony took place in the beautiful back yard of our rental home and the reception was held at the epic Green Turtle Club. As our guests arrived, they were greeted with a signature Tipsy Turtle cocktail and classic Bahamian hors d’oeuvres, such as lobster bites and cracked conch. Our grand entrance into the reception was a traditional Junkanoo parade! Junkanoo is a celebratory parade where locals dress in traditional colorful costumes and dance around while playing drums, whistles, and other percussion instruments. It was one of the highlights of the weekend!  We really wanted our guests to have the full Bahamian experience, therefore, we made the decision to have a long wedding weekend. With so many places we love, it was important to us to have our guests experience each one of them. Our weekend itinerary included: a welcome party at the well-known, Dollar Bar, with live music from our favorite one-man band, Island Spice, and freshly made conch salad. The following day, we took our guests to Munjack Cay to feed and swim around with stingrays and sharks. After that, we ended the day at the Bluff House Beach Bar with a traditional Bahamian barbeque. To end the weekend, we couldn’t possibly let our guests leave the Bahamas without experiencing a classic Sunday Funday at Nippers, on Guana Cay!

The weekend was everything we imagined and more! We are so grateful to our friends on Green Turtle for helping make our wedding dreams come true. We will treasure these magical moments forever and look forward to making even more wonderful family memories there.

A Legacy: Surrounded by the Power of Timeless Island Love

20 May-June 2023 Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

A legacy is something special that is passed down for generations. For our family, that special something is our love for the Abacos. I wrote a small piece for Portfolio about five years ago with this same title and it still holds true to this day— Timeless Island Love. Five years ago, I picked up the phone to call my Grammie, Midge Shaw, to dive into her memory bank of how this love story began. This story of generational love for the Abacos all began in the late 1950s when my grandparents, Bob Fehlhaber and Marjorie Shaw, were newlyweds.

“Papa and Grammie” sailed from New York to Florida to embark on their big adventure to explore the Bahamas, with just the two of them on their 28-foot sailboat, Pavon. They had 8-10 gallons of water, some non-perishable canned food, and adventurous winds billowing their sails. After days in the open ocean, they made it safely to the islands.

“I don’t know if we were brave or stupid, but I do know I was never once scared. I was so comfortable and confident with Papa at the helm,” Grammie explained. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Their honeymoon had turned into a year-long trip starting in New York sailing through the Bahamas, and down to the Exumas. They finally found their way to a little settlement named Hopetown. Grammie explained that at the time, Hopetown had three or four sailboats in the harbor, and one generator to run electricity for the entire town. At exactly 9 p.m. every night, the generator would be turned off leaving only the raw sights and sounds of the island—the moon, stars, and a few flickering kerosene lamps. The calm sounds of the palms blowing in the breeze, gentle waves lapping the hull, and distant ocean breakers filled the harbor. Hopetown still holds this magical charm, but just imagine the untouched beauty back then. This is the Bahamas I grew up to know and love, with all my heart.

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com May-June 2023 21

Ayear later, my grandparents made their way back to the states. They called a dock slip in Miami their home, living aboard their beloved sailboat, Pavon. Papa worked in the boatyard and Grammie worked as a secretary. Their closet lived in the trunk of their car. A few years passed and they were back in the islands, but this time, Grammie was pregnant with her first child, my mom. They explored an island just south of Hopetown named Tilloo, with no sign of human existence in sight. They decided this would be the place to buy a piece of land. Grammie ended up living in the Bahamas for more than 10 years. Fast forward to May 20, 2018, and she was sitting in the front row at her first-born granddaughter’s wedding at Coconut Grove, with Tilloo in the distance. There she was, feeling the same Bahamian breeze that carried her many years ago, gazing just past the newlywed’s arbor at an ocean view that tells a much bigger story. This is just a glimpse of their adventurous love affair with the islands, and just the beginning of ours.

A lot has changed in the five years since interviewing my Grammie. The beginning of February 2023, I began my journey into motherhood and my Grammie passed away. Now, it is my turn to continue to share this love story for Hopetown with the next generation. I had the privilege of traveling to Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos this past November for a very special wedding of Reilly and Jeremy… while being 7 months pregnant. The little mystery baby in my belly got to experience blissful swims in the Bahama blues, eat conch fritters, dance to a Junkanoo, hear the hum of a boat engine as we island hopped, and even try a few sips of a Goombay Smash. I feel my daughter’s love for these islands has already begun, it’s within her. This upcoming summer our trip to Hopetown will be much different, but our love for this island remains strong. We will remember my Grammie in her most peaceful and beloved place, while at the same time, get to see Hopetown for the first time again through my daughter’s eyes…

It is quiet in the old building today. There are no events planned, no caterers buzzing around, no tables being set up, and no wine being chilled. No one is draping silk runners through the big timber trusses, hanging chandeliers from the cathedral ceiling or lighting candles on the stone fireplace. There is no band, no bar. No buzz of anticipation. The building is silent except for the birds across the thick green yard singing in the ancient oaks that line the street. The lights are off, and sunlight streams through the wood framed windows and sprays across the building’s original quarter-sawn heart pine floor. If these walls could talk, they would have nearly 90 years of stories to tell.

As Robyn Berry, Vero Heritage Acting Executive Director, walks

across the main room toward a smaller private room on the south side adjacent to the patio, she’s deep in thought about the design for the new bridal suite she has planned for that space. Along with the Bridal Suite remodel, the entire interior painting project began Monday, April 3, 2023. Soon thereafter, the paver patio facing the open lawn scape will be upgraded with new pavers. While there will be many changes in the next couple of months, the Heritage Center will be preserving the old, while planning for new modern amenities.

Built as a community center by the young City of Vero Beach using New Deal era federal funds in 1935, it was transformed less than 10 years later during the height of WWII when the north wing was added to provide a lounge and servicemen center for the local Navy Base.

For over 88 years, the Heritage Center has hosted hundreds of parties and weddings and continues to be a sought after venue.

“Beyond the beauty of its historic architecture,” remarks Robyn, “this incredible place allows us to borrow its history, even if just for an evening, to inspire in our guests a reverence and sense of profoundness. And in turn, it invites us to add our own fingerprints to its heritage with some of the best moments of our own lives shared within these walls.”

Please join us as we celebrate the past and future brides at the Heritage Center on Sunday, September, 17, 2023 for The Vero Beach Bridal and Groom Show.

Homeschool: Tools of Learning

“EDUCATION IS NOT THE FILLING OF A PAIL, BUT THE LIGHTING OF A FIRE.” ~ WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

“What does your day look like?” I asked a friend. She listed all the wonderful things her children accomplished by noon each day. Something inside me sank. Our days never seem so organized. That pesky thought crept forward, “What if I am failing my children?” I quickly rehearsed my own advice: Don’t compare. Learning is a process; not everything has to be accomplished all in one day.

I thought back on the week; the days were scattered and not very organized, but learning was definitely taking place.

My perspective changed as I considered the goals of a Classical Education (which I am working hard to implement). Every day, my boys learn the “tools” to learn. What are these “tools?” If you are familiar with Classical Education, you will recognize the term trivium, if not, I'll explain. In Dorothy

Sayers address to Oxford University in 1947 entitled, “The Lost Tools of Learning” she defines the “tools” as the three phases of the trivium: grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric. The term, grammar, is not a  subject but rather the vocabulary or language of any subject. It is defining words, memorizing definitions, events, places, poems… anything! A learner in the grammar phase plays with terms without the added weight of understanding. My six-year-old is wonderful at this because memorization and repetition comes easy. We sing songs and play with big words all day long. He does not have to understand why the second law of thermodynamics explains that heat flows from an area of higher temperature to an area of lower

temperature, just singing the definition and watching a popsicle melt on the counter is enough. The “why” is reserved for the next tool—dialectic. This is the logic phase of learning. Discussions and debates are frequent. The final tool of the trivium is rhetoric. Equipped with the instruments from grammar and dialectic, a student in the rhetoric phase goes deeper into any topic and is able to communicate clearly and form logical arguments.  Thinking through this process gives me peace. No, my day hadn’t looked like my friends, but we had played with many new definitions. Specifically, the formula for calculating the circumference of a circle. I made up a song to the tune of “What does the fox say?” (By comedians Ylvis). My six-year-old sang, “What’s the Circumference of a circle? The circumference of a circle equals 2 times pie (3.14) times the radius!” Later while eating at local restaurant, Costa d’Este, my ten-year-old, (or dialectic phase learner), wanted to know the size of a decorative circle surrounding a table. He calculated its circumference using the memorized formula, then we discussed the difference between rational and irrational numbers. I may not have had the most organized day but wow! He will never forget how fun math can be. Children love to learn. As long as we teach them the tools to learn, they will be able to learn anything. William Butler Yeats puts it this way, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

Heading North?

MAKE YOUR FINAL WEEKS IN PARADISE STRESS FREE WITH TOP-NOTCH SHIPPING SERVICES

Preparing to head north to cooler temperatures? Vero Beach will miss you, and we at Pakmail Beachside are here to help your transition until you return to us again. You’ve got plenty to do in preparation for your travels, so let us lighten the load by shipping your belongings so they’ll be waiting for you when you arrive.

We’re stocked with lay-down or standing wardrobe boxes for the easiest way to ship your clothing wrinkle free. Our biggest piece of advice when it comes to shipping clothes is you don’t necessarily want to fit all your clothes in the largest box possible. The weight will add up quickly and make it

harder to handle. It may be best to divide them into smaller, more manageable packages.

Your journey north is not complete without your favorite set of golf clubs! All you need to do is bring them in our store and we’ll measure them for one of our multiple sizes of golf club boxes. We typically stretch wrap the clubs

together at the top to prevent any scratches or damage against each other during transit. If you’ve got your own shipping label, we can take care of the packaging, affix your label, and ship it out right from our store.

Will you be needing your mail sent to you while you’re gone?

For our non-mailbox customers, streamline the process by giving us a call with a little information including the mailing address, how you’d like it mailed (Priority Mail, Fedex Ground, etc.), and who we should be expecting to drop it off to us, and we’ll take care of the rest. We’ll set up a credit card on file and email you the receipt each time it’s brought in. For our mailbox customers, we’ll await your call with when you’d like us to start the mail forwarding process.

Make your last few weeks in our little slice of paradise free of stress with our shipping services! If you’ve got just a little too much than your car can fit, call us to schedule a free local pick up! We look forward to seeing you before you go, and welcoming you back in the fall!

2. Develops resiliency and confidence: Toss off the bubble wrap! In a camp environment, children are safe to take risks and go outside of their comfort zones through a variety of activities. The right summer experience will teach campers tangible skills such as paddling a kayak or playing a team sport, and soft skills, including perseverance, creativity, responsibility, and courage.

Attention Campers

SUMMERTIME IS ADVENTURE TIME AT JOLLY ROGER ADVENTURES

It’s a place where they grow and develop skills that become a part 3edof who they are into adulthood. So, why go to camp?

Summer is calling… are you ready? As parents, our children are our most important priority, and we are constantly striving to ensure their safety, happiness, and encourage their natural curiosity for their world. When each of these priorities coexist, magical moments happen.

What is it that makes summer such a magical time? Summer is synonymous with adventure; it symbolizes youth and a passion to explore. Finding the right summer camp is much like mapping out a memorable road trip. It can feel overwhelming and exciting as you and your children plan their adventures. The American Camp Association encapsulates summer camps best, "Camp provides children with a community of caring adults who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. All of the outcomes— self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect—build personal competencies."

Camp is a place where your child will do more than just learn to bake or learn how to wakeboard.

1. Build friendships and social skills: Camp provides a safe environment for children to take measured risks. This crash course in meeting new people provides campers with opportunities to

3. Embrace physical challenges: Camp is certainly not a place for getting lost within phones. Even a camp that incorporates the use of electronics, such as coding or game design, should have a team-centric vibe and allow for time outdoors in the sunshine. At camp, your children should have a sense of peer engagement and the right amount of unstructured play time to allow children to grow their imagination and sense of wonder.

4. Learn the values of leadership: Campers may not see that camp provides a place for them to become more self-aware or

develop skills that will harness the qualities of a leader. Whether it is helping a fellow camper in a game, cleaning up a space or contributing their talents, campers are expected to take initiative. Emotional intelligence and self-confidence are characteristics directly attributed to the definition of a good leader, and campers practice leadership daily without fear of failure because these skills are wrapped into days of fun.

You Will Dig This Groovy Read

Who doesn’t love the 1970s? Bell bottoms, crocheted tops, big sunglasses, polyester button downs, peace, love and most of all, ROCK AND ROLL. The ‘70s was arguably the most influential and revolutionary decade for politics, fashion, and most of all music. Being a child of the ‘70s, I grew up with all the best vinyl my parents would buy for me, and Fleetwood Mac was my favorite band. So, when I saw the book

“Daisy Jones & The Six” by the latest

“it” author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, I knew I had to read it.

“Daisy Jones” is a fiction novel loosely based on the iconic ‘70s band Fleetwood Mac, and Daisy’s character is representative of the lead singer and my all-time favorite female rock star, Stevie Nicks. While the book is not meant to be an actual portrayal of Fleetwood Mac, the vibe of the band and its sudden and intense rise to fame and complicated interpersonal relationship provided the inspiration Ms. Reid needed to create her own far-out story of a young group of musicians making it big in the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

The story is written in interview format, which I found extremely effective in providing different perspectives from the various characters as they take the reader through their rise-to-and-fall-fromfame story. The reader doesn’t hear the interviewer’s voice until the very end when the interviewer’s identity is revealed. This allows for excellent character development and a sense that the characters are speaking to the reader directly. Then, you get an emotional surprise at the end. You will come to love/hate Billy and Daisy both, each as conflicted and seriously flawed as the other. You will dig the ever-patient and sweet Camila and Graham and will root for the others as the band goes through its ups and downs. The only complaint I had about the book was that I was so invested in the band by the end that I was disappointed that I couldn’t hear their songs. I mean, a book about and iconic band from the best decade in music but I had to imagine the music! I was dying to hear them play!

Amazon Studios solved that problem by coming out with the miniseries. Daisy is played by Elvis Presley’s granddaughter (Lisa Marie’s daughter), Riley Keough, who brings Daisy to life almost exactly the way I pictured her. The rest of the cast is great and the series is worth a watch. One piece of advice though - keep your expectations of the music a little on the lower end (they are NO Fleetwood Mac!). But, as long as you go into it realizing that of course nobody could recreate music like Fleetwood Mac’s, you will enjoy the series. As always, make sure you read the book first—nothing beats your own imaginative interpretation of this groovy story!

South German Hefeweizen is a classic German wheat ale brewed in a traditional way with 60% wheat malt, noble German hops, and a Bavarian-strain top-fermenting yeast. Named for the year our historic location was built, this old South German style has plenty history of its own. This brew has a medium-light body with subtle hints of banana and clove, and a smooth finish with a pillowy mouthfeel.

Starting May 1st, American Icon will donate $1.00 of every pint sold of our 1926 Hef to Stache Strong. This effort is in support of

brain cancer awareness month and the money is used to fund research.

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM)

An estimated 13,000 new cases of GBM will be diagnosed in the United States in 2020. It is estimated that more than 15,000 people in the United States die from GBM every year. GBM is the most common, and deadliest, primary malignant brain tumor in adults.

It also affects 3% of pediatric brain tumor patients.

The five-year survival rate for GBM patients is only 5.6%. Mean survival for GBM patients is estimated to be only 12-18 months. Sadly, survival rates and mortality statistics for GBM have been virtually unchanged for decades.

Prominent Americans who have been lost to GBM include U.S. Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy; U.S. Senator John McCain; Beau Biden; Hall of Fame Major League Baseball player Gary Carter; and Major League Baseball player Edward “Tug” McGraw (father of country music star Tim McGraw).

LOCAL GROWERS PROVIDE TRUSTED SOURCES FOR FARM FRESH PRODUCTS

In west Vero Beach, there are hidden surprises down almost every dirt road. These range from farm fresh eggs, homegrown produce, dreamy goat milk soap, beautiful cut flowers, grass-fed beef, natural skincare products, sweet

honey, and more. All are made or grown by local, hardworking residents or farmers of Indian River County. The country lifestyle is very much alive out here. These days, we are frequently hearing how important it is to get to know your

farmers and growers, so you can gain an understanding of where your food or products are coming from, how they are raised, etc. The importance of trusting the source of what you put in or on your body is vital.

You can find some of these locally crafted goods at the Beachside Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning. Peterson Groves carries produce they have grown themselves and many other local grower’s products. Osceola Organic

Farm has a retail shop you can visit anytime or you can join their membership program to have amazing greens. Treasure Coast Harvest is a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) that brings together these small farms and offers a variety of products that you order online weekly and pick up yourself or can get delivered to your residence. We are blessed in this town to have these options.

I am a small-scale grower that typically tries to grow just enough organic herbs and veggies for my family, as well as some cut-flowers. As I’ve gained experience and knowledge over the years, my harvests have begun to increase. Building a community of people who embrace the natural life is of high importance to me. I also passionately want others to learn to grow anything and feel the benefits and joy. I just added a micro farm stand out of our workshop where I always have fresh eggs. All produce is “take what you want, leave what you want.” There will be specialty jarred items and skincare products, like calendula salves and lip balms, that have been crafted with love using what we grow when we have abundant harvests.

As we wind down our growing season, we take this time to plan, prepare, and dream about the glorious fall months ahead. This is also the perfect time to create that garden space you’ve imagined. You will never regret learning to grow food and the magic that reveals itself in every sprouted seed never gets dull. Grow outside!

Destination Home

DESIGNING A CUSTOM HOME IS AN INVESTMENT THAT WILL CREATE INVALUABLE MEMORIES

Florida’s precedent setting architecture, as well as the state’s economy, have been built under the appeal of vacation. Henry Flagler’s hotels gave many people their first acquaintance with the Florida sunshine, and offered a respite from it under generous covered walkways. Paul Rudolph’s clients gave him freedom to build innovative houses in Sarasota with an experimental spirit emboldened for their second homes. Addison Misner established a vision for Palm Beach solely through the design of holiday homes. New urbanist developments of Seaside on the panhandle and Windsor in Vero Beach are also largely seasonal destinations.

Vacation is all about “getting away” and going “somewhere.”

The most memorable locations offer an immersive experience where the character of “somewhere” is fully developed. Walt Disney harnessed the power of the immersive experience, delighting generations with theme parks that have become almost synonymous with the word vacation itself.

The character of the experience you envision for a beach get-away need not be themed in order to be immersive, and your experience will undoubtedly benefit from accommodations that are thoughtfully designed to connect you with the best qualities of the

place, from climate to culture. Owning a vacation or seasonal home offers the opportunity to make this connection in a way that incorporates your own interests and preferences. From design character to maintenance concerns, a design process that focuses on the unique attributes of a second home offers immediate and long-term value.

The ideal layout of your vacation home will most likely differ from the ideal layout of your permanent home. Design features, materials, and technologies should also be considered through a new lens.

Key Vacation Home Considerations:

• Site composition to funnel breezes or block wind

• Patterns of use

• Sun exposure and areas of shade in outdoor spaces

• Storage needs

• Indoor/Outdoor connection

• Entertaining preferences

• Daylighting

• Smart Home features and remote access

• Material selections

• Day-to-day and long-term maintenance

Owning a vacation home allows you to create more profound memories because vacation experiences diverge from daily life and are often associated with positive emotions. Making the most of your time and creating the most positive memories starts with the design of the place that facilitates these experiences. Designing a custom home is an investment that will bring invaluable memories.

As Vero Beach grows as a destination, preserving our culture and resources directly relates to constructing a built environment custom designed to be authentically connected to the characteristics of our unique landscape, climate, and culture.

Custom Upholstery, Fast and Faster

LEAD TIMES FOR CUSTOM FURNITURE ARE RETURNING TO NORMAL

If you've found yourself in a new home that needs furniture or you're ready to update your current space, look no further than Hazel House for everything from decorative accessories to case goods and custom upholstery pieces. With so many options available, we've made it easy to purchase quality custom upholstery. Lead times have finally regulated, so now you can get it faster than ever!

When selecting furniture pieces, there is a lot to consider in terms of internal components, performance, and comfort. You can begin this process anywhere in the home as our options extend from

headboards in the bedroom, sofas and sectionals in the living room, and even barstools for the kitchen.

Construction, comfort, and fabric are top of mind when shopping for custom upholstered furniture pieces. We ask our clients many questions during the selection process to ensure they’re making the right choice for their lifestyle.

The construction of our custom upholstered furniture pieces is something we are really proud of. Our manufacturers build furniture with kiln dried hardwood that is doweled, screwed and glued, ensuring the longevity of the piece.

We frequently visit the factories of our partners and are always learning about how they are improving their process. We know our customers can enjoy their pieces for a long time. Comfort, which is surprisingly subjective, is the next most important factor when selecting your furniture pieces. Manufacturers offer different cushion options such as poly, down, or a blend fill. Husbands really enjoy this part of the shopping experience!

Lastly, we assist with the selection of fabric. There are dozens of options in solids and prints, which can be overwhelming. Our staff of designers and stylists at Hazel House are there to help narrow it down. We believe that it comes down to color, content, and texture. Synthetic fibers have improved significantly making for many options that are stain resistant, incredibly durable, and very beautiful. If you have small children

or pets, these performance fabrics are always the best route.

Now, for the best news we’ve heard in a while: lead times for custom furniture are returning to normal. While some manufacturers are still catching up, most of our custom upholstery lines will ship in 6-8 weeks or as little as 10 days.

Stop in to learn more about our custom upholstery partners that are made in the USA, are committed to eco-friendly manufacturing, and use the best in fabric technology. With over 1,000 silhouettes and fabric options, the possibilities are endless. Our designers are committed to helping you every step of the way.

Vero Beach Real Estate

MORE VALUABLE FOR OUR INCREDIBLE QUALITY OF LIFE

Prevailing activity in the high-end one million dollar plus, Vero Beach luxury real estate market, continues to support what we experienced in the first quarter. The market has indubitably shifted from a strong seller’s market

to a buyer’s market. Nevertheless, our traditional “selling season” paradigm has also matured into a more year-round market creating an ideal climate for sellers to list their properties, with buyers from Miami, the Northeast, California,

Canada, Europe, and South America still flocking to Florida in general, and more specifically to our barrier island. They seek luxury property acquisition that will realize a great future return on investment.

As a third-generation barrier island resident and estate agent, I have experienced the long-term ebb and flow of this market. One factor, among many others, causes me to maintain a bullish outlook on investing in Vero Beach. The more uncertain the outside world,

the more valuable our incredible quality of life.

High net worth individuals with an appreciation for safety and security, understated elegance, low population density, sound local government, as well as a stunning natural environment will always feel confident investing in Vero Beach. It is easy to live well on this island. That does not change.

Orcas in Florida

KILLER WHALE SIGHTINGS IN WARMER REGIONS HELP SCIENTISTS LEARN MORE

On January 11th, a female orca more than 20-feet-long died after washing ashore on a beach in Flagler County. While the incident was rare, as this was the first orca whale to beach itself in the southeast U.S. in nearly 70 years, it’s not entirely shocking, according to marine mammal biologist, Jeremy Kiska, Ph.D. “I am actually surprised that more strandings have not been recorded along the east coast of Florida,” he said.

Orcas inhabit every ocean on the planet, from the Caribbean to

the Arctic and Antarctic. Older females lead small groups as the matriarch and a male orca stays with his mother for the entirety of its life, while females branch off into their own family units. Different pods even have unique dialects, like the difference between a New York accent or Southern drawl.

Orcas, or killer whales, are social mammals with complex culture, which shapes what and how they eat and other behaviors. Technically the largest member of the dolphin family, orcas are

apex predators that eat everything from seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, stingrays and sharks, depending on where they live. In South Africa, for instance, a pod of orcas hunt great white sharks. In Punta Norte of Argentina, orcas strand themselves on the beaches to eat Southern sea lion pups. In the Bahamas, they hunt the small spotted dolphins.

Most of what biologists know about orcas is in the colder regions. However, Jeremy recently co-authored a study documenting orca sightings in the Caribbean and gathered 25 sightings off Florida’s East Coast and in the Bahamian region. “So, what do we know about killer whales in our backyard? Very little,” Jeremy said. “We know that their presence is unpredictable, they form small groups—up to 10 individuals at

most—and they have a broad diet, feeding on other cetaceans, sharks, tuna, and occasionally on sea turtles. That's basically all we know.”

Any sighting is important to scientists to learn more. If you are on the water and encounter orcas, record their position and collect videos. “However, make sure that you do not get too close to the animals, as these animals are protected and disturbing them is illegal,” he said. Any sightings can be reported to the Marine Conservation Ecology Laboratory at Florida International University by emailing jkiszka@fiu.edu.

PRIDGEON AND HIS PASSION FOR AVIATION

Rodger Pridgeon hit Vero Beach in 1981 while working for Chautauqua Airlines, which serviced Lakeland, Ocala, and Vero Beach. He hasn’t slowed down in the intervening years and his passion for aviation and the fantastic people of Vero Beach hasn’t wavered.

He’s the President of Corporate Air, Inc., a family run FBO (fixed base operator) at 3450B Airport West Drive, just east of 43rd Avenue. Their services include fuel, hangars, charters and maintenance for private jets and general aviation planes at Vero Beach Regional Airport. They just held the groundbreaking event for the new U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, which will be built by Bill

Bryant & Associates and sponsored by Roger Pridgeon. It’s a user fee facility which means that the people using it are paying for it and not taxpayers. It’s the first in the country that is privately funded.

An amazing jewel in the aviation crown at the airport and it’s at no cost. It will be the furthest north Customs facility, which you can clear without an overflight permit. When Boca Raton and Stuart added their Customs facilities, there was a 30% increase in usage at the airport. Another benefit is that departing aircraft will be able to clear Bahamian customs as they leave Vero Beach. Making that trip to

the Bahama’s less time consuming and much easier. Rodger describes the new facility: “It’s an above and beyond spectacular 4,000 square foot building.” They are targeting early 2024 for completion.

Six 20,000 square foot hangars are also planned at Corporate Air. Each hangar will able to house five medium-sized jets. Two hangars are expected to be completed by 4th quarter of 2023, and the remaining four by the end of 2024.

Roger’s family are a big part of the Corporate Air team with his son, Justin, running the line, daughter, Krystle, at the customer service desk, and his wife, Diana, in charge of finance. Former Indian River County Commissioner, Tim Zorc, former Vero Beach Mayor Harry Howle, and Philip Vitello round out this local hardworking, successful team.

Ocean Adventures on a Windy Day

SEARCHING FOR SHARK TEETH AND OTHER BEACH TREASURES

With two young boys, the beach is the best place to get them outside and burn some energy—even on a windy or colder winter day. When the water is too rough, we still head to the shore to play in the sand and search for shark teeth, since it doesn’t require swimming.

Sharks have been around for 450 million years and lived through the mass extinction of the dinosaurs.

They produce new teeth throughout their lives, rather than just two sets like humans. That means a single shark can produce between 30,000 and 50,000 teeth in a lifetime!

While Florida’s West Coast is most notable for shark teeth, it is possible to find them regularly in South Florida, too. One of my favorite spots is around Juno Beach, particularly just north of the pier. In fact, this beach is where my

4-year-old son found a great white shark tooth, all on his own. When I heard him yell, “Mom, come here!” my first thought was that he hurt himself. I was utterly shocked when I saw he found a tooth and then the realization of what species it was.

How to Find Shark Teeth

First, it’s important to know you are not looking for white teeth, which are fresh teeth. Most of the shark teeth in Florida are fossilized, either black or brown.

Walk the shoreline and scan for triangle shapes in the shell beds and seaweed. You can also go in the wave break and scoop up some sand and shells using your hands.

If you find yourself traveling around the state, other toothy beaches include:

• Venice Beach

• Caspersen Beach

• Casey Key in Nokomis

• Fort Clinch State Park, located on Amelia Island

• St. Augustine Beach

One of the best parts of searching for shark teeth is that it is free and you don’t need any special equipment. In addition to teeth, there are so many other kinds of treasures to find, like sea glass, seashells, and even the internal shell of the elusive ram's horn squid (I’ve found two my entire life).

to Minnesota and Canadian regions, like Manitoba and Alberta.

The Avocet is typically all white and black feathers, with greyish-blue legs that are about 8” long and their feet are slightly webbed. These birds walk, wade and forage in wide open areas versus deep inside a tree habitat. If you happen to find one with a rust to auburn coloring from the head to the chest, that indicates it is in breeding season. If you are lucky enough to find one of their nest sites on the ground, meticulously built out of a few sticks and grasses, they typically raise a brood of 3-5 eggs. Incubation duration is 23-25 days in which both parents participate, with an exception to nighttime when only the female sits on the eggs. It’s amazing to think that the young are eligible for flight around 4 to 5 weeks after hatching!

The American Avocet

For more information, contact BrianNativeBirdBoxes.com. Follow along on @NativeBirdBoxes.

The American Avocet is such a beautiful and exquisite bird, one of the largest in the stilt or avocet families, Recurvirostridea. When you look at their family name, you will note the ‘recurv’ in the name coming from Latin meaning ‘bent’ or ‘curved backwards.’ Take a closer look at their bill, which is distinguishingly different than others. It curves upward versus straight or downward like in the

Ibis family. With this hint, it should help to guide you in finding them in shallow, muddy, or marly areas sweeping its bill from side to side, just like a Roseate Spoonbill. It would be looking for insects or small crustaceans for food in these shallow areas. These birds are a migratory species traveling from Florida and the Gulf Coast states to Mexico during the winter non-breeding time of the year. Then, they fly all the way mid-west

This bird is of least concern on the conservation status list, but because they are ground nesters this makes them susceptible to attacks. Even though one would suspect they are not the smartest of birds for nesting on the ground, an Avocet is quite meticulous about where they nest, as they know the risk they pose. Finding a nest site might be tricky out in an open wetland making it difficult for predatory mammals getting to them. Enjoy finding them as they are quite the treat to observe!

To learn a bit more about these birds, never hesitate to look them up on Cornell’s website at AllAboutBirds.org, which is a fabulous digital resource. There are many books that can help guide you to your mystery bird, as well as apps for your mobile devices, too.

big leap; she sold her house and used that money to invest in her first big batch of inventory.

Within months, Bug Bite Thing caught its second big break. A social media post caught the attention of a producer of ABC’s hit show, “Shark Tank,” who reached out to Kelley and encouraged her to audition for the show. In October 2019, the episode aired featuring Kelley and her mother, Ellen McAlister. All the sharks were biting with offers to invest in the business, but it was Lori Greiner’s ‘golden ticket’ offer that secured the partnership.

In April 2021, Kelley and her mother returned to “Shark Tank.” They shared the details on the company's transformation into a multi-million dollar enterprise following their appearance on the show. The award-winning product is Amazon’s #1 selling product for insect bite relief with more than 78,000 reviews.

In 2013, third-generation female entrepreneur, Kelley Higney, and her family relocated from San Diego, California to South Florida. There was one thing they were not prepared for—the mosquitoes. Kelley’s six-month-old daughter was constantly suffering from severe reactions to the bites.

Determined to find a natural alternative to the available remedies on the market, Kelley began researching. She ordered an unfamiliar product that used suction to remove the irritant— and it worked. It transformed the quality of life for her family—they could finally spend time outdoors!

In 2017, Kelley secured distribution rights to the product and branded it Bug Bite Thing. She became a “mom on a mission”

to educate the world that there is an effective, chemical-free solution for insect bites and stings and began selling the product at bake sales and farmers’ markets.

One year later, CBS12’s reporter, Luli Ortiz, read a Facebook post in a local moms group about Bug Bite Thing. Kelley was interviewed on the local news. That segment was syndicated to other television stations and the product sold out. She then took a

What to source: Choose a vast array. Basically, if it looks good alone, it’s going to look even better surrounded by beautiful friends.

When it comes to foraging, the south is a magical place.  Florida. The very word means ‘festival of flowers’ and when you think about it, the name couldn’t be more fitting. In Florida, a never-ending lush array of green foliage and bold blooms await 365 days a year! Where?

Your very own backyard.   Perception really is everything… and with a fresh set of eyes, your backyard can become a flower market that is open for the taking. As local flower farmers, growing

Select a variety of color or make a statement by using your favorite tone. When it comes to the green things, simply choosing different leaf shapes is a great place to start! Don’t you dare overthink this. We are just having some fun!

Make the cut: Oh cutting. This part can stir up some thoughts. How much should I cut? What do I cut with? A straight cut? A slanted cut? For us, there’s only one rule: you’re the boss. Clip the stem the

length you need to fit the vessel or properly arrange. We tend to take as much length as possible because you can always make it shorter. Remember, you can’t cause damage to a plant by pruning it. If anything, you’ll spur new growth!

Pull it together: Arranging is an art, which only means anyone can do it. Greens first, add the blooms, and then tuck in a few

more greens. The photos we've included demonstrate this best.  Tips to making it last? You guessed it…water. We love to soak oasis floral foam in water and pressing the stems into the sturdy brick to create a professional looking masterpiece that won’t shift.

Now, who’s ready to celebrate the abundance from Mother Nature?

Taking Small Steps Forward

CHANGE THE WORLD BY CHANGING YOURSELF

If you find yourself over extended, stressed, and overwhelmed, just know you are not alone. If there is a craving, almost desperate yearning of wanting to be at peace, trust me, everyone is feeling the same vibes. Lately, more than ever, this has been a common theme in my practice. On one hand, I see this as an excellent sign; a sort of awakening. People are being faced with the fact that maybe there is more to life than a vicious cycle of always trying to keep up. On the other hand, there is a real sense of feeling overwhelmed when it

comes to even thinking about making changes and a need to really look into their lives to prioritize a sustainable lifestyle.

You see, if we’ve been living a certain way and doing things in a particular manner, these things, a.k.a. patterns, are installed in our brains. We are creatures of habit even when we fundamentally decide that we will go in, unknot, and fully rewire ourselves. This process takes time, discipline, small doses, advancing and going backwards often, rinsing, and repeating. There really is no other way to do it. I always feel like I deliver bad news when I tell my clients that there are no shortcuts. In my mind, this is actually a great opportunity. In the beginning, it’s a lot of reshaping and work! However, today’s “sacrifice” is an investment into what will be second nature in years to come.

Unfortunately, this is a hard sell in today’s world of immediate satisfaction and short-lasting

dopamine hits that scrolling on social media and the 20 second video bits grant us. The world is being conditioned to cheap thrills more than ever. So, how do we reconcile living in a world that functions under the brief, unfocused, and over stimulating hits to our brain and our yearning for more, whether it be deeper connections or moments of calm during the day? We are certainly not going to change the world all at once, but we can change ourselves, and take small steps forward. By doing that, we can change our world.

From a philosophical standpoint:

• Be who you say you are/want to be. If you say you do it, do it, one step at a time. If you say you want to let things go, then next time you observe yourself losing it, take a pause and breathe. Rinse and repeat.

• Allow yourself the grace to go 2 steps forward and one step backward. We are not seeking

perfection, we are seeking consistency. When your goals derail, just immediately get back on track… start over.

• Hold yourself accountable. A process of change and discipline requires extreme honesty, especially with yourself. Dr. Kristen Neff calls this fierce self-compassion and it basically includes some of that tough love that we sometimes need to help us stay consistent.

Some practical ways to feel a little more joy and peace:

• First and foremost, the basics: Make sure you are sleeping enough. Move your body. Go outside and breathe fresh air, soak up sunlight, and try to eat nourishing meals so that you are “regular.”

• Make your bed, shower, brush your teeth, get dressed.

• Connect with the earth, take your shoes off and stand on the grass for 5 minutes.

• Look up at the sky, the sun, the stars, dance under the rain.

• Smile, at yourself and others. Have a random conversation with a stranger at the grocery store, let someone pass on the car line, call a friend.

• Take a walk, a run, or whatever floats your boat… but spend time with yourself.

• Do things old school. Turn your phone off for an hour a day, or a week (the world is not going to end, I promise).

• Write it down: make lists, journal, write affirmations.

• Breathe… deeply and often.

Beat the Heat

SUNSCREEN 101

Summer’s here, which means endless hours of fun in the sun. As you prepare your boat and beach bags, make sure you’re stocked up on plenty of sunscreen to beat the heat. When was the last time you read the ingredients on the back of a sunscreen bottle? Do you know what to look for and avoid? Here’s some tips to keep your skin and body happy and healthy:

• Avoid sunscreens with added fragrance. Fragrance is a known endocrine disruptor and can lead to unbalanced hormones.

• Stay away from oxybenzone and avobenzone! Both endocrine disruptors, these chemicals have been shown to affect the estrogen levels in women and testosterone levels in men. Oxybenzone is potentially more harmful to children, too.

• Beware of titanium dioxide, a known carcinogen found in most cosmetic and food products. Titanium dioxide is most harmful through inhalation, which is a huge concern

with spray sunscreens. Zinc oxide, in the form of nanoparticles, is also a concern when used in spray formulations. My personal favorite that is easily accessible is Thinkbaby SPF 50+ Sunscreen. You can find it in Target stores or online. Not only is this sunscreen free of harmful chemicals, PABA, parabens, phthalates, BPA, oxybenzone, avobenzone, and petroleum, but the zinc oxide that is used in this formula is non-nano. So, toss out the old sunscreen, read your labels carefully, and enjoy the summer knowing you’re protecting your skin with only the best ingredients!
