H Sometimes cowboys look like they are dancing in mid-air. The horse’s hooves are digging into the dirt to stop abruptly while the cowboy takes advantage of every second to start tying the steer with the piggin' string that is held in his mount while riding.

H Feeling Very Nostalgic H

Lately, I’ve been feeling very old-fashioned! This summer, we visited old Florida in various cities throughout the state. It was like stepping back in time. Most eateries were family owned, didn’t take credit cards at all, and gave you change in $2 bills— wait… what?! The food was fresh right off the boat and we always ended up stopping at a homemade ice cream place. As most of you know, I have been dealing with breast cancer since 2014. We recently had a massive reoccurrence, now Stage 4, metastatic, so it limited our travel plans for this summer. Always craving adventure and a new horizon, we set out to explore places that are lost in time. We recharged our solar batteries, rested, and rediscovered places that seemed forgotten and… had a blast. This picture is from a few years ago when Alyssa was in her teen years and was at one of our favorite barns, Ashwood. We were attempting to do a photo shoot with Henry (Alyssa’s horse) and the end shot was and forever will be my favorite. Tracey Floyd captured us in such a sweet moment that we weren’t even planning with Henry, me and barn kitty who I adored! Henry was pretty fond of barn kitty too. (I told you I was feeling very nostalgic!)

This issue is dedicated to all the cowgirls and cowboys… whether you ride in the rodeo circuit and compete, or you just work cows, horses, or the land. You all are my heroes. You are dedicated, strong, passionate, and believe in staying rooted. Thank you for reminding us that you can continue to build family legacies on the backs of horses.

I’ve been to a few rodeos and I’ve seen my share of true cowboys. These men and women seem fearless to me. Their bond with the animals that they interact with and trust is like no other. It’s a fast-paced, rewarding and disappointing at times, life. It’s regained its popularity in recent years, thanks to more televised rodeo publicity and western shows like Justified, Deadwood,

Longmire, Yellowstone, and 1923, to name a few. Seeing a rodeo in person is thrilling! You feel like you’ve stepped back in time, along with feeling proud to be an American. It makes you feel nostalgic, thinking of the wild west days.

Our featured photographic artist, Melanie Maganias, loves capturing the Wild West. Her rodeo images captivated me and inspired me to put together this issue. I’ve known Melanie for many years as an amazing photographer, specializing in beautiful Montana and destination weddings. Her rodeo images moved me so much I had to showcase her work! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! There are several local places that you can see real life rodeo. To the west in Arcadia, known as the “granddaddy of them all” is the Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo located in DeSoto County. This rodeo draws top athletes in PRCA Rodeo to compete for a chance to make it to the national finals in Las Vegas. Events include bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding, and more. South, in Davie, is the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds that was founded in the 1940s and is located in a western-themed downtown district (and is the town’s largest tourist attraction). North of us in Ocala, you can find the Southeastern Pro Rodeo which hosts the 30th Annual Pro Rodeo in March 2024. Be sure and check with each facility for dates and times of their events.

H Stampeding to the Rodeo H

Rodeos are a time-honored tradition. It’s about celebrating western culture, values, and cowboy heritage. Attending a rodeo is quite an experience. Rodeo preserves the spirit and excitement of being in the Wild West by gathering people from all walks of life to share some good old fashioned fun!

This issue is dedicated to the cowboys of yesteryear. It’s our way of honoring and remembering them and keeping the tradition alive for future generations. It’s a gentle reminder that it’s important to support events like these to celebrate Western and American heritage that still lives on today.

Dust off your cowboy boots and we’ll see you at the rodeo!

Capturing the True Grit of American Cowboys in the West

For over 30 years, I have focused on capturing the essence of rodeo life through my camera lens. Steeped in tradition and inspired by the real-life cowboys who worked tirelessly in adverse conditions on ranches, rodeos have evolved into a unique sport that encapsulates the spirit of the American West. It is one of the most dangerous sports athletes compete in, many of the events include unpredictable and incredibly dangerous animals. Rodeo has experienced exponential growth over the last five years, partly because of the popularity of the Yellowstone series and with the advent of The Cowboy Channel, which started airing live rodeos in 2019.

It is an honor to see the western way of life in front of my eyes; photographing rodeos is my way of preserving the historical significance of the sport and lifestyle. While living in Montana, I’ve run my own cows and have helped gather and brand more cows than I can count. It’s a way of life that was once foreign to me, but now is in my soul and moves me back in time.

These cowboys and cowgirls frequently come from families who have run cows on ranches or ridden the rodeo circuit for generations. They often start riding horses before they can walk and talk; it is a way of life and part of their genetic makeup. Being able to capture and bear witness to the tenacity, bravery, and joy that riders experience is one of the most important ways for me to preserve the history that I revere.

The roots of rodeos can be traced back to cowboys who tamed the wild frontiers of the American West, Mexico, and Spain. These skilled horsemen spent their days herding cattle, breaking untamed wild horses, and demonstrating their prowess in various ranch-related tasks. It emerged as a way to break the boredom of ranch life, showcase their talents, compete and celebrate their skills, and foster community. Rodeo spectators are invited to participate in this mythical lifestyle for a few hours, and it is always a wild and unpredictable ride.

Rodeos open with a prayer and our National Anthem. Watching every cowboy and spectator place their hat or hand over their heart is a communal ritual that once was common, and now is a rarity at sporting events. Being surrounded by hundreds of people saying a prayer and singing our National Anthem is moving and it transports you to a simpler place and time; it sets the tone for the rodeo. The moment the last word is sung, the crowd cheers, hats are placed back on heads, and the focus of the crowd moves to the chutes under the announcer’s box.

H The Rodeo Queen carries the American flag around the arena at the start of every rodeo, just before the National Anthem is sung. Women compete for the coveted title throughout the year and act as an ambassador for the sport until the next Queen is crowned.

H A steer wrestler is bursting out of the roping chute just moments before the rope barrier is ‘broken’ by the horse. Riders receive a “Cowboy Speeding Ticket” in the form of a 10-second penalty if they break the barrier before the calves' neck rope is released when it is released from its chute.

“Roughies,” are cowboys who make their living 8-seconds at a time, are rustling behind the chutes. The bronc riders travel light with their custom-made chaps and supplies all organized in a carry-on rolling bag, along with a one-of-a-kind saddle hoisted over their shoulder as they walk into the arena. The riders are focused, busily fastening their chaps, pouring baby powder in their boots, wrapping old injuries, and mentally preparing for the opportunity to ride 8-seconds atop a wild bucking bronc. The horses are carefully arranged in each chute as the cowboy readies himself for his ride. His friends and the chute boss make certain that he is safe before his ride begins. The tension is palpable. Everyone is keenly aware that no matter how well prepared you are, once the gate opens there is no guarantee that he will walk out.

With the nod of his head, the gate opens, and the horse explodes into the arena. During the following few seconds, his skill, mental focus, and physical aptitude are tested. Although he may know the personalities of the bronc he drew, no ride is ever the same. With nothing but a saddle and a rope to hold onto, the rider must stay centered and balanced, anticipating every move of the bronc. The dangers are real; a mistimed dismount or a moment of hesitation can lead to severe injuries. It is unlike any other sport; it isn’t played with a ball, instead it has a rider pitted against specially bred horses that buck a lot. It is this adrenaline-charged dance with danger that makes bronc riding both exhilarating and awe-inspiring. The story is similar for cowboys who ride bulls, but as a National Cutting Horse Champion friend of mine once told me, “Broncs are dangerous, bulls want to kill you.”

H Pickup men are the most experienced and respected riders at a rodeo and their horses are the most well-trained. At the rodeo in Wilsall, Montana, this pickup man is riding side by side a bucking bronc and reaching over to release his flank strap.

Rodeo is a competition of athletes that ride on the backs of animals that weigh between 900 and 2,200 pounds. Some are bred to be wild, and others have bloodlines that make them fast, but all of them can be very unpredictable. The ropers, wrestlers, and barrel racers ride quick and agile horses that can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Steer wrestlers and ropers sit on the backs of their incredibly trained horses inside the roping box, preparing to race against the clock. The anticipation is intense: adrenaline is racing through the veins of both horse and rider. The horse literally jumps at the start, hoping not to break the barrier. The cowboy or cowgirl can’t have the neck of the horse hit the rope that closes the box before the chute door opens for the steer. It takes countless hours of training for a horse and rider to compete well together. Roping and wrestling are timed events. Barrel racers ride horses that almost fly through the arena and turn on a dime around barrels. It’s like racing a Bugatti. Running into the arena at a full gallop and racing around three barrels always makes the crowds cheer!

H Pickup men most often ride in pairs of two, one first grabs the bronc rein while the other cowboy rides on the other side of the horse to get ready to release the flank strap. When the rough stock run by the edges of the arena you can hear and see the power and speed of the horses.

H In rough stock events, both the cowboy and horse receive up to 50 points each scored by two judges. The horse is rated on the rhythm of his ride and his front end drop and how high he kicks.

Cowboys ride in rodeos not merely for fame and fortune, but for the love of the sport, the history of their families, and the unyielding passion for horsemanship. It's a calling that runs deep in their veins, as they strive to test their skill, strength, agility, and mental fortitude against the untamed spirit of broncs, steers, and bulls. The adrenaline rush and the sense of accomplishment they experience while riding these magnificent beasts drives them to push the boundaries of their abilities. When cowboys get hurt, they often ignore the doctor’s advice to take time off from the circuit, often riding with severe injuries.

H Barrel racers ride horses that can reach high speeds. These cowgirls and their horses take screeching turns around each of the three barrels in the course and then ‘run’ home. The winner is often determined by thousandths of a second.

The western way of life is far from glamorous. It's a rugged and demanding lifestyle that requires resilience, discipline, and unwavering determination. On the rodeo circuit, competitors form a close-knit community, bonded by their shared passion and the challenges they face. Often competitors will ride in a rodeo, pack their rolling bags or horses immediately after their ride, and head on down the road to the next rodeo with two or three of their friends in the same pickup. Driving sixteen hours through the night to the next competition is common, sleeping isn’t. Despite being rivals in the arena, there is a powerful camaraderie among them, where the spirit of sportsmanship prevails, and lifelong friendships are forged.

H If a cowboy rides the full 8-seconds, a buzzer sounds and he is legally allowed to grab onto the horn to hold on.

Each and every time a crowd hears the announcer say, “All this cowboy is going home with tonight is your applause!” the people cheer and the fallen cowboy walks through the dirt in the arena towards the chutes, knowing that he will have another go at it at the next rodeo.

H The tension behind the chutes before a rider sits on his drawn bull is ominous. Some cowboys pace excitedly while others bow their head in prayer before they put on their protective gear to ride.

Melanie is innately curious, and photography is her lifelong passion.  She loves capturing the essence of her subject matter, at rodeos, in editorial assignments, at weddings and in portraits, by following her intuition and using her camera as a tool to depict her vision. Melanie lived in Dunedin, Florida, between the ages of 13 and 21, where her family moved from Jersey City, New Jersey. Her parents built their first roller skating rink in Tarpon Springs, “Astro Skating Center,” when Melanie was 16, where she worked until graduating high school and leaving for college. Her brother took over running the family business and now owns eight roller rinks across the state, the newest one is located in Palm Beach.

Melanie moved to Montana in 1991 and has been there ever since. During that time, she ran a small heard of cows for over a decade and has been doing branding and cattle gatherings for friends for over 25 years. She has lived up a dirt road that winds through a ranch where she first started riding horses and was welcomed to brandings. She’s shot a few stories on ranching life and has written one. From ranching to weddings, and everything in between, Melanie’s passion for capturing life through her lens, is in her soul.

Painting in the Shadows

TWO ARTISTS, TWO DIFFERENT STORIES, CLAIM THEIR PLACE IN THE SUN

Tt all started when Paul Barattini, owner of Manor Auctions in Vero Beach, asked me if I had heard of an artist named Tutti in Gifford who had painted with the Highwaymen. I was hooked when he added that the artist had possibly painted with the Buckners and had perhaps been related to them. The Highwaymen have become something of an obsession within the Florida art scene and the discovery of a forgotten or lost artist is big news.

But where do you start looking for an artist that might have painted in the 1960s?

All things being equal, I started calling dealers, collectors, Highwaymen artists and their siblings, widows, and friends. Getting bits and pieces I finally saw a picture of a Tutti painting and was given his phone number. Tutti Jenkins did paint on Upson, with Highwaymen Ellis Buckner starting in the 1960s and is related to them through their mutual grandmothers

and grandfathers. Two brothers married two sisters. Coach Tutti is 79 years young, still painting and coaching football at VBHS.

When the hubbub started in the late 1990s that a writer was looking for Highwaymen artists to interview for a book, Tutti didn’t answer the call, as he felt he wasn’t one—he had never sold a painting from his car and he worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker to support his family. Tutti intentionally stayed in the shadows with his Florida art.

Norman Wright is from the Ft. Pierce Highwaymen group. His late Uncle Isaac Knight was a state of Florida Hall of Fame Highwaymen artist, as is his other uncle, Al “Blood” Black. He apprenticed with his Uncle Isaac in the early 1970s, when Isaac and he were both working at Grumman Aviation in Stuart. Isaac taught him to paint, make frames, and sell to tourists at the Ft. Pierce Jetty in the 1970s. There are Upson paintings

signed by Norman Wright. He attended Lincoln Park Academy and his teacher was the revered Zenobia Jefferson who brought Alfred Hair to study with artist Bean Backus.

Norman decided to move to Atlanta in the 1980s and pursue different career options. He returned to find out that he had missed being included in the book about the Highwaymen. When he asked his uncles what happened, Isaac told him that he had forgotten. Norman styles himself the “Forgotten Highwaymen.” His Uncle Al calls his nephew Norman: “The Legendary Highwaymen.” Two artists, two different stories, emerging from the shadows and about to claim their place in the sun. Historical Fiction for Animal Lovers

West With Giraffes was recommended to me last year by a friend who knows how much I love giraffes. I just love it when my friends know me well enough to know what I like. Although, I really don’t know how anyone could not love this novel.

In this historical fiction novel, Lynda Rutledge tells the story of a pair of African giraffes who have survived a shipwreck in a hurricane off the coast of New

York, and a teenage boy, “Woody,” who comes across them as they are being loaded onto a truck for a drive across the United States to the San Diego Zoo. The setting is

1938 depression-riddled America and Woody has just fled his home after the devastating Dust Bowl. He becomes mesmerized by the giraffes whom he later refers to as “God’s creatures straight from Eden” and he talks his way into helping drive the precious cargo in a rickety wooden truck (see photo), far too top heavy for the treacherous roads he must travel, to their new home in California.

As Woody commands the rig with two giant giraffes along roads through America’s Midwest, he encounters many struggles along the way, meets new people, and forges new relationships—with both man, woman, and beast. The book is full of dramatic encounters, seemingly insurmountable odds, great struggles, and incredible triumphs. Woody is forced to face his past, forgive himself and learn to move forward. Woody’s relationship with “Riley,” the man in charge of the giraffes, begins in conflict but morphs into something as meaningful as a father and son. His unlikely relationship with a troubled female and self-proclaimed journalist, “Red,” who follows the rig on its long journey is both sweet and heartbreaking. Lastly, his relationship with the giant, gentle beasts with the soulful brown eyes is one that will leave an indelible mark on the heart of any animal-lover.

This incredible story, based on true events, is one that will stay with me forever. If you love a good story, read it. If you love animals, read it twice.

Homeschool: Take the Outside Challenge

“NEVER BE WITHIN DOORS WHEN YOU CAN RIGHTLY BE WITHOUT.” ~ CHARLOTTE MASON

“When do you ride your scooter?” My two boys whizzed by me on their scooters. Leisurely, I reclined on a lounge chair by the pool and called out questions to my 10-year-old. He sailed by me, “When the air is hot, and the deck is dry!” I recorded his answer and continued asking the inventive writing “W” questions (who, what, when, where, and why). Smoothly,

he slid to a stop next to me ready for a break. “Ok, now let’s put these into an interesting order.” My youngest continued to glide around us on his scooter. Presently, my eldest finished a four-paragraph essay on his favorite things. It was impressive, not just the descriptive “ly” adverb usage, but that we had accomplished it all while enjoying the outdoors. The 19th-century educator, Charlotte Mason, was

right; “Never be within doors when you can rightly be without.”

How many subjects can we cover while outside in the fresh air? Our family’s ‘Outside Homeschool Challenge’ began after being inspired by Ginny Yurich, who started the global movement, 1000 Hours Outside. The purpose is to encourage children to “match screen time with nature time.”

According to Kaiser Family Foundation, the sad statistics reveal that children spend upwards of seven hours on screens (not including education-related screen time) a day. Given the abundant research that children benefit from fresh air, vitamin D, and the joys of nature, why don’t we all take the challenge? How many hours a day can be spent learning outside?

Here are some fun ways to incorporate homeschooling outside:

• Swing in a hammock and read history or classic literature.

• Toes in the sand, walk the beach with your child, and begin a discussion on any topic using the Classic 5 Common Topics (Definition, Comparison, Circumstance, Relationship, Authority). To learn more about the art of asking critical thinking questions, read “The Question” by Leigh A. Bortins, and be sure to read it outside!

• Bring measuring cups into the pool and memorize liquid measurements, or exercise in the grass shouting out math facts.

• Keep a nature journal on hand. Track animals and draw them like the famous William J. Long or draw closeups of beautiful flowers like Georgia O’Keefe. Bonus: have a bag ready equipped with a portable paint set and drawing pencils. Find a comfortable place to sit and paint the scenes around you like Monet.

• Send your kiddos outside with a picnic blanket, snacks, along with “independent” work.

• Keep a record of your nature time: go to www.1000hoursoutside. com/trackers and download a creative coloring hour tracker.

Our little stretch of paradise doesn’t offer much in terms of cooler breezes and raked leaves to usher in the start of a new school year. While we steam ahead, our rituals are signaled by migrating mullet, the frisson brought by swirling tropical activity in the Atlantic, and lots of speculative chit-chat about whether we’ll finally break the back of summer’s heat by Halloween. There is something comforting about rituals. The start of a school

year is a new beginning. It is really unique if you think about it; how many of us actually get to start fresh every ten months or so? The start of a new school year is a milestone, and the rituals of back-to-school gatherings provide a sense of structure, continuity, and familiarity in our lives. This transition from summer to the start of school also creates a sense of connection to others who are sharing the same experiences; who doesn’t immediately appreciate

the smell of a freshly cracked box of perfectly pointed crayons?

“Back to School” is a uniquely American event – just look at any social media channel starting in early August. Every student has an opportunity to set new goals, make new friends, and approach their academic, artistic, and athletic endeavors with renewed enthusiasm. The regularity of this ritual, occurring every ten months, allows for a cyclic rejuvenation and an opportunity to reflect on personal growth and development, whether you’re a five-year-old starting an academic journey, or a seasoned teacher and coach.

At Saint Edward’s School, a culture of constant improvement guides each day. Every adult and student knows that even a 1% change every day yields a better result that eventually buoys the

entire community. From the maintenance crews who work day and night to make this campus even more beautiful, to the lower school volunteer students who tend to our chickens, to the faculty who embody our vision statement of “we shape the future,” we are a community that strives to do better, from the first to the last day of school.

There is no doubt that we will all experience challenges, failures, successes, highs, and lows at some point during the 2023-2024 academic year. Life has a way of keeping us honest and grounded, and knowing that sharing of these ups and downs over time is what makes this community so unique and special.

RECONNECTING WITH NATURE AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING

This holistic approach to farming recognized the interdependence between

the farmer, the land, and the ecosystem. We believe in being interconnected to our food. Organic farmers hold a sacred duty to produce food that will benefit health to consumers. We emphasize our practices should be passed on to future generations as the wisdom of indigenous cultures and their sustainable practices have shaped for us. At Osceola Organic Family Farm, organic farming is not just an occupation but a calling, a life's mission, and a sacred trust to our consumers. Our belief in learning from nature, rather than just about nature, resonates with the principles of organic farming taking us back to our roots.

Amidst the industrialization of organics, there is a growing movement to reclaim the authenticity of organic farming. Custom and floating shelves are seeing a resurgence in design these days. Styling these areas is one of our team’s favorite tasks, and it’s also one of the trickiest.

Whether you are contemplating updating your current shelving or creating one for the first time, we have a few tips to share with you:

Less is more. Begin the process by editing down your collection, a frequent mistake we see is styling with too many objects.

Draw the eye to the back of the shelf. Embellishing a built-in with wallpaper or paint is a favorite trick of ours. (We love helping clients source wallpaper!)

Have a healthy mix. Showcase your best collections on your shelves; found objects, sculptures, vessels, flowers, pictures frames, and other favorite treasures.

Group similar items together. When it comes to books, we group like-colored books together and

stack them horizontally or vertically. Small sculptural items should be grouped together or placed on top of books for height, while large items should stand alone.

Get to styling. Once you have all of your essentials and groupings, the fun begins! Mix textures and sizes while sticking to a singular color palette. Experiment with the placement until you’ve got it right.

The east coast of Florida is home to one of the most exciting and sought-after events for fishing enthusiast—the mullet run. Each year, between September and November, countless schools of mullet make their way down the coast, drawing in schools of large predatory fish, such as snook, tarpon, and redfish, creating some of the year's best fishing opportunities. The beaches along the east coast of Florida are already known for their beauty, but the mullet run adds an extra level of excitement. Watching schools of mullet leaping out of the water while tarpon

explode from beneath them is a sight to behold.

It is around the three-year mark that the mullet reach maturity, marking the start of their adult lives. From there, they can grow at an impressive rate of up to 2.5 inches per year. As they make their way down the coast, a myriad of species follows in their wake. The most prized of these predators are the tarpon and snook. Fishing for these species during migration can be heavily influenced by weather patterns. It's not unusual for these fish to take refuge in the ICW through various inlets, which presents a perfect opportunity for anglers to fish from the beach, jetties, piers, or the backwater lagoon.

As snook spawning season nears its end, many anglers eagerly anticipate the start of a new season.

Pressure changes trigger heightened activity and aggression among the snook population, increasing the likelihood of successful catches. For seasoned fishermen, this season presents a thrilling challenge to reel in some of the biggest and most elusive fish of the year.

The mullet run is more than just a seasonal migration. It's a natural phenomenon that draws in a diverse range of species and creates unforgettable fishing experiences. It's a time of excitement, anticipation, and challenge for fishermen; and it's all set against the backdrop of Florida's stunning coastline. The mullet run is a reminder of the beauty and power of nature, and the joy that can be found in a successful catch.

other birders have been recording. Often times these birds will be high in trees, either it be conifers, hardwoods, or deciduous. Sometimes these locations are real neck breakers and one might get what is termed ‘Warblers-neck’ for looking high into the canopies. Other great areas are mangroves! Once again, look earlier in the morning hours, and in the dense canopies that mangroves provide, and you might find a flash of bright yellow. Some other preferred habitats are marshes and swamps, along with streams, farmlands, and forested edges.

For the southern portions of the North American continent, you should be seeing many species of birds beginning their fall migration from their far north summer grounds that they have enjoyed. Many of the easier birds to see will be the raptors, maybe some herons or egrets, even the large American White Pelicans, but the most colorful will be the Warblers. One that always captures my eye is the Yellow Warbler, Setophaga petechia. As its name states, yes, it is bright yellow, sometimes having faint brownish to black stripes down the front breast plate if it

is a male and by age, whereas the female is void the added striping. These added colors in warbler males are quite common, as it is in other species, so the female does not stand out while tending to a nest that might have eggs or hatchlings. So, ladies of the Homo sapien world, thank you for your beauty.

This bird, like most Warblers, is quite small, weighing in at an average of 9 grams (0.3 ounces), which would be equivalent to two sheets of copy paper, a smaller pair of cufflinks, or a tablespoon of butter. As this bird would tend to not be seen due to its size, here are some tricks to seeing them. Your best attempt to see them is during morning hours, but most importantly, make sure it is the right time of the year and correct region. A great app called eBird can help guide you in regions where specific birds are being seen that

Typically, these birds do not nest in the southern region of North America. They ‘winter’ in the southern regions and all throughout different habitats in Florida. Some will stay in these southern regions, but most will make their way through to Cuba or Puerto Rico, and they even make a great journey to the tropics. During migration, they are seen in these southern areas keeping away from the cold North American winters. Then, in the spring when they begin to head back north; this is where their breeding grounds are to raise young once again. They do not use nest boxes nor birdhouses, but use the native vegetation being a ‘plate nester’ in their desired habitat.

The Real Cowboy

A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

His cowboy hat is stained from years of wear and his boots haven’t been oiled in so long that the leather looks as though it might give out at any time. His knuckles are scraped and bruised from turning wrenches for a living and being on the losing end of barbed wire more than once. There is a scar above his eyebrow from a gate that was kicked by a cow and bruises on his body from his way of life.

He’s been blessed to spend much of his life outdoors, where he’s borne witness to things most people couldn’t even imagine. His skin is weathered and worn and he can tell the time just by looking up at the sky. He still remembers

the first time he heard an elk bugle on a cold November morning and the eerie feeling of being stalked by a coyote. He’s had close calls with rattlesnakes and badger holes, somehow managing to avoid certain death from either one.

He’s seen a lot out on the range, from the birth of new calves to the death of a good friend. He’s seen the sun rise from behind a mountain range and has watched the sun set behind a smoky horizon. He’s ridden some good horses and spent a lot of hours on a horse that wasn’t worth a plug nickel, but he’d always be the first to tell you he’d rather spend a rough day in the saddle than an easy day in his recliner.

While he spends much of his time alone, he’s not immune to the happenings of the world. He’s seen cattle markets rise and grain markets crash. He listens to the weather forecast like it’s his day job and keeps a close eye on the news. He prays for the world he and his wife are raising their children in.

He’s come to know that it’s not the hat that makes the cowboy, nor the scars or the stories. It’s not the size of the herd that matters, so much as the size of a man’s heart. He follows a code of ethics and honors his faith. The true measure of a cowboy isn’t how much land he owns or who knows his name, but rather the love he passes on to his family, and the legacy he builds for future generations. He is what it means to be a cowboy.

ROAD TRIPPING ACROSS THE COUNTRY

On May 29th, we left our house in South Florida at 5a.m. with two kids in tow (including one who was just 13 months) and a 75-pound dog. What ensued next was an incredible, wild adventure.

We traveled more than 10,000 miles in our SUV from Southeast Florida to the Pacific Northwest and returned mid-August. Along the way, we hiked to glacial lakes and waterfalls, photographed herds of mountain goats, bison and elk, walked through lava tubes, sand

boarded, searched tidepools for sea stars and other critters, and saw lots of friends and family.

When people learned of our journey, many said we were crazy. But, as my dad taught me from a young age—everything is manageable—and we would handle any issues, as long as we were prepared.

If you’re considering taking an adventure with your kids, but a little intimated, just go for it. Things will go wrong, it won’t be perfect, but you’ll adapt along the

way. And remember, not everyone has to start with a 10,000-mile road trip either.

The kids might not remember it, but you will, and you’ll have the photos, stories, and experiences that shaped their core.

Here are a few tips from my experience:

• Prepare lots of healthy snacks and treats, like fruit, sliced cucumbers, and carrots (you’ll feel better). We always traveled with emergency bread, peanut butter and jelly, and the kids had some treats like gummy snacks and lollipops, too.

• Minimalism is key. We set out the trip with just a couple books and toys, and added special items along the way.

• We saved screen time for really long driving days (more than 10 hours) and they were given after naps and food. It was never

expected and the kids found other creative ways to pass the time.

• Clean out the car every day, and reorganize as best as possible.

• Have a plan for travel days, but also keep a flexible attitude if things pop-up and change (because they will).

• Be prepared. We carried an easily accessible first aid kit, car kit, extra water, and nonperishable food, as well as flashlights and wipes.

If you’re taking a long drive with your dog, place a therapeutic bed in the back that absorbs shock. It will keep them more comfortable as it’s better for their bones and joints.

Species Spotlight: Nurse Shark

COUCH POTATOES OF THE SEA

Tiger sharks, bull sharks, great hammerheads,—  these large predators get most of the attention in the media. But, Florida is home to another species of shark, the nurse shark, and they are impressive animals in their own right.

Generally slow-moving and sluggish, earning them the nickname couch-potatoes-of-the-sea, nurse sharks spend much of their time resting on the seafloor as bottom-dwellers. They are found

in the warm, shallow waters in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Unlike most sharks, which require constant motion to move water over their gills, the nurse shark can remain motionless along the bottom. They actively pump water over their gills through the continual opening and closing of the mouth. More social than most sharks, they’ll also rest in groups of up to 40 individuals.

Nurse sharks hunt at night, scouring the seafloor for small fish,

crabs, snails, and lobsters, using their two barbels to sense prey. It’s the only shark in the Atlantic Ocean with barbels around its mouth, which makes identifying them easy. They can also be identified by their light yellowish-brown to dark brown color, flattened body, very large tail and a broad, rounded head.

Their scientific name, Ginglymostoma cirratum, is a mix of Greek and Latin and means curled, hinged mouth to describe this shark's somewhat puckered appearance, according to National Geographic

But where does their name come from? I had always heard that it was because the sucking sound they make when hunting for prey in the sand resembles that of a heartbeat in a stethoscope.

The most likely theory though, according to experts, is that the name comes from the Old English word for sea-floor shark: hurse.

When I was growing up, we had a joke in my family that spotting a nurse shark during a dive didn’t count as a “real shark” sighting. Yet, when I was at the beach with my then three-year-old son and a little nurse shark swam past us, he was stoked and so was I. Maybe nurse sharks are the “everyday animals” of the ocean, like squirrels or raccoons on land. Yet, if there’s anything I’ve realized as a mom, it’s that those animals deserve our appreciation and allow us to connect with nature on a daily basis.

HOW A LITTLE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE FUTURE OF HOLISTIC HEALTH

These brilliant minds were hinting at a future we are walking into now. Before we wrap our minds around frequency and this miraculous technology called Healy, let’s define the nature of health and more specifically bio energetic health.

In the Western model, the optimal state of health is to simply have no malfunctioning parts. If there is something problematic with the heart, we treat the heart. If there is something malfunctioning in the liver, you treat the liver.

Eastern medicine views the body as a garden. This analogy is so beautiful. Think of a garden, or a house plant even. When a plant is unhealthy, the gardener looks at the environment. Is there enough sunlight, water, or shade? Are there insects invading? Does the soil rich have the optimal

nutrients? Are there other supportive plants nearby?

The optimal state of health is to have the correct environmental conditions to allow the natural flourishing of vitality to emerge effortlessly. This is bioenergetic health and something that can be available to all of us! The human organism requires energy to function and thrive. With proper energetic fuel, the body can transform that to usable energy or ATP. Healy increases the ATP of the cells in the body enabling this transformation to occur efficiently. If this isn’t happening there is a loss of vitality and the conditions for illness and disease.

How does Healy do this? Healy frequencies work directly with the bodies energetic and magnetic fields to create coherence. When you have coherence, that is when you’re in high performance, that is when you are making powerful decisions, and that is when you are walking with the wisdom of your heart anchored in purpose.

What is a magnetic field? Every moving electron creates a magnetic field, and we are FULL of moving electrons. Every organ, tissue, and gland contains electrons. Physics tells us that every moving electron creates a magnetic field, so we are a walking magnetic field. The Healy is programmed with frequencies that are carried with a current. Changing Behaviors

LIFESTYLE CHOICES CAN POSITIVELY INFLUENCE OUR BREAST HEALTH

All the ladies in the house know the routine of getting an annual mammogram to screen for breast cancer. We’re also familiar with the feeling of anxiously awaiting the results, and for good reason. Breast cancer accounts for approximately 29% of all new cancers in women in the U.S. and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. But does the common occurrence of this malignancy mean we are powerless against developing breast cancer? Although there are risk factors that are not within our control such as genetics, dense breast tissue, race and age, only 13% of breast cancers are attributed to genetic factors. This means we can leverage in our favor the modifiable risk factors listed below to reduce our risk for developing breast cancer. By changing certain behaviors and lifestyle choices, we can influence our breast health in a positive way.

Alcohol intake - The American Cancer Society states that drinking any amount of alcohol increases risk for breast cancer. One drink

daily can increase risk by about 7-10% over non-drinkers. Two-three drinks daily results in about a 20% higher risk. Alcohol raises estrogen levels, impairs the absorption of essential nutrients like folate, and also adds extra calories to the diet contributing to weight gain.

Being overweight or obese, especially after menopause - After menopause, most of the production of estrogen comes from fat tissue instead of the ovaries. Having excess fat can then raise estrogen levels and cause hormonal imbalance. Additionally, being overweight is often associated with higher insulin levels which has been linked to stimulating the growth of cancer.

Environmental toxinsXenoestrogens are a type of EDC, or endocrine disrupting chemical, that mimics estradiol. These chemicals can impact estrogen levels by binding to estrogen receptors and exerting effects on tissues, interfering with its production, transport and also impairing its clearance. The result is exposure to too much estrogen and disputed hormone balance. The most familiar xenoestrogen in

our environment is BPA. BPA is commonly found in plastics, but also in our water supply, different foods, and in thermal paper used to print receipts. Buy products with labels that say BPA free and avoid plastic water bottles.

Diet - risk for cancer is increased by eating highly processed meats and ultra processed foods which are high in sodium, fat, and sugar. Highly processed meats have been labeled a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization and include bacon, sausage, ham, salami, and hot dogs. Beef, lamb, and pork are classified as red meat and Group 2 carcinogens by the WHO.

Physical activity - exercise is protective against breast cancer. It helps regulate IGF-1 which is a potent stimulator of cell growth.

Smoking - cancer causing chemicals in tobacco are transported to the breast tissue which increases mutations that both cause cancer and stop cancer from forming. This risk is seen in both active and passive smoking.

Insufficient vitamins - Studies show that vitamin D regulates cell growth and is important in reducing cancer risk, along with B vitamins, vitamin C, folate, and vitamin E which appears to have greater anti-cancer effects in the tocotrienol form versus the tocopherol form.

Artificial light exposureArtificial light at night has been associated with increased breast cancer risk likely due to a disrupted melatonin cycle.

In the client-coach relationship, a coach usually asks questions with the intention of digging into what the goal is, what are some possible strategies or solutions, and what steps does the person feel capable and willing to take. However, the process is often reversed and the question that often comes up is, “How do I calm my mind?” While I would love to have the perfect answer and I do share tools and resources, things are a little more complicated than this.

In my work, I have observed that laying out the options are

simple. Talking about approaches, methods, and practices that can help with overall relaxation and stress management is the easy part. What sometimes becomes complicated is embracing the concept that this must be “worked” towards or that one has to change to see a change. Rewiring the brain is a tricky endeavor. One that brings up a lot of resistance, existential questions, and it can be deep work. Change can bring us face to face with pain. The pain of realizing we’ve been selling ourselves short, the pain of knowing we can do better, maybe even the pain that we have to push ourselves harder or even accept some things for what they are. If there is anything I’ve learned, change, even when we seek it, can be the hardest thing.

For me, it’s coming back to myself. What do I need? It might

be deep breathing, journaling, a nap, often a positive affirmation, or moment of inspiration. I also have a routine that includes simple, yet basic elements that works if I stick to it. It includes not snoozing, making my bed, a healthy diet, daily movement, mindful moments, and practices that bring me joy, like writing, reading, and listening to music. Also, I make sure I know my boundaries and honor them; staying within my bandwidth is crucial. The dance between effort and surrender is ever present, but when I have what I need, I flow so well that I remember why I do it and that is what keeps the spirit going. So, my question for you… how do you calm your mind?

When I was a child, my grandmother would tell me that if you live in a community, you owe it something. I still hear her voice: “No one gets to live anywhere for free.” Over the years, I have tried to fulfill that obligation through various outlets like working with my church, organizing a community tutoring program, operating hurricane shelters, and providing food and lodging for the homeless during extreme weather events. After 30 years of community service, my life changed drastically when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I had no frame of reference but knew I had to figure it out.

I met with her primary care doctor, oncologist, and the multiple myeloma specialists who took on her case. I understood her diagnosis was dire, but they would do their best to devise a plan by working together. Her job was to focus every fiber of her being on getting better; mine was to figure out everything else. I started with the obvious, researching and understanding the disease, then worked on figuring out her insurance and how I would get all the bills paid. It was a daunting task, and I was fortunate that my experience in social services provided a thread that unraveled access to resources that helped her when she needed it most. I learned so much about cancer during those first six months after my mom’s cancer diagnosis but also discovered something else. Cancer care is extremely costly, and the patient resources are limited, both nationally and locally.

About 18 months after my mother’s diagnosis, I was interviewed for Friends After Diagnosis. I admit, it was not a resource I knew about

need. Over the last three years, we have expanded our services and programming, yet remained true to our core initiative: ensuring that every woman in our local community who is diagnosed with cancer has access to support, wellness programming, direct and personal services, financial navigation assistance, and opportunities to celebrate life—all at no cost.

Cancer is a universal disease, experienced by every demographic in America, even worldwide. There is no ethnic group, gender, or race that has not been affected by this disease. I have learned that fighting cancer, like raising a child, mandates the help and cooperation of the entire village. The cancer journey involves attention to detail from an engaged primary care practitioner, the expertise of oncologists and hematologists, and the ongoing dedication of radiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other oncology team members. Recovery is most effective when neighbors, friends, and family members are committed to offering support and handholding from diagnosis and throughout the recovery process. A cancer diagnosis can also require the help of local organizations like Friends After Diagnosis and partnerships with ‘friends’ like you—those who understand that charity begins at home, right in your own community, even before it touches the rest of the world.
