Every day is a new adventure! In fact, our main mission at Portfolio is to live life and think outside of the box! We believe that life should be LIVED and we try to maximize on that every chance we get. This summer we were lucky enough to have two great, extremely smart and witty interns join in our fun. (We missed our regular intern, Kate, who was interning in Charleston.) I always love working with these young adults. No matter what age any of us are, we can always learn from each other. None of this could be possible without all of us working together as a team. We are united as one with a common goal of putting together a lifestyle publication that we are ALL proud to have our name on. All this couldn’t be possible without hard work and the respect, dedication, commitment and deep appreciation that we have for one another. I am thankful each and every day to have these wonderful people in my life. Our advertisers are special people too; more like family. Please make sure you visit them and tell them that you saw their business in Portfolio! That is the biggest compliment you can give all of us! This issue, we hope that we inspire you to eat fresh, real food. Start out small. Make small changes and if they work, make another and another! We have so many wonderful choices to buy local, fresh food straight from the farm or fresh markets. If you have a green thumb, try growing a few veggies at home. Take the taste test: eat fresh, real food vs. bagged, processed food. You’ll be amazed at how great food tastes! My new obsession is growing my own lettuce! (I don’t exactly have a green thumb, so I opted for the hydroponic patio garden which only requires me to check the water level!) We hope we have inspired you to eat just a little healthier and support our local farms. Write us or share your garden pictures with us on Facebook or Instagram…we’d love to hear from you! Here’s to eating fresh from the farm goodness! Happy Fall!

Who knew an ear of corn, fresh carrots or a bright red tomato could improve your health, your community and the environment, all at the same time? Buying local food is a simple way to do all three! Local food doesn’t suffer from “jet lag” like produce that is shipped from across the country. Local food supports local farmers. It also puts more money back into our community and saves a whole lot of gas.

hy should you shop the farmer’s market instead of the big grocery chains? Access to fresh, locally grown foods, for starters. That may be one of the best reasons, but there are many more. Farmers markets have fruits and vegetables at the peak of the growing season. This means produce is at its freshest and tastes the best. The food is typically grown near where you live, not thousands of miles away or another country. Shopping at farmers markets also supports your local farmers and keeps the money you spend on food closer to your neighborhood. Most Saturdays, you can shop one of our local Farmer’s Market. You’ll discover each one is much more than just your average farmers market. You can find seasonal fresh produce, meats, fresh local seafood, a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants, artwork, handmade craft items like jewelry, pottery, and soap. Most of our farmer’s markets are dog friendly, so bring your pets and enjoy a perfect family outing to the market! Start a new tradition. Involve the family! Encourage participation in selecting that perfect tomato! Support our local farmers! 14

Eat Seasonally Farmers markets feature what’s at the peak of season in your region, so you can often find your favorites, along with new items that will stretch your culinary imagination. Have you ever tasted figs or rhubarb? Have you seen a Brussels sprout stalk? Slurped a donut peach? These are some things you might find (and be able to sample!) at your local farmers market. Who knows, maybe you will discover some new favorites!

Learn a farmer’s secret Farmers love to share their secrets. First among them are tips on how to prepare fresh offerings. So if you need to know what to do with kohlrabi or are looking for something to give your salsa a kick, just ask.
Follow the rainbow A great way to eat healthy is to put a spectrum of colorful fruits and vegetables on your plate. They are full of great nutrients, including antioxidants and phytonutrients. The more color variety, the better!
Bring the kids! Farmers markets are kid-friendly and usually dog-friendly too! Let your kids pick out something new to try. Then, let them help prepare a meal or choose a snack.

l’s Family Farms is located in the historic “Big Red Barn” on Kings Highway in Fort Pierce. Owner, Jeff Schorner, took over the family business after his father, Al, passed away in 1987. A visit to Al’s Family Farms today is a blast from the past, the way old Florida used to be. Back in Al’s day, Kings Highway was “wall to wall” citrus stands, as winter residents and tourists loaded their trunks with big bags of incredibly sweet, Indian River Fruit. Today nearly all of the fruit stands and packinghouses have disappeared… except for Al’s! Clinging to “old school values,” they still do things the old fashioned way. Al’s hand picks and gift packs the freshest fruit from local groves. Citrus, gift fruit and fresh squeezed juice is their specialty, but Jeff ’s wife, Sharon also makes incredible, homemade fudge. You can also find local honey, and other seasonal produce. Locals know the Red Barn Grill as home to some of the best burgers and Mexican food in town. There is even an old fashioned play area for the kids! Al’s offers free juice and fruit samples, 6 days a week, and every Saturday at the Fort Pierce Farmers Market.

Backyard Gardening and Raised beds
G
rowing food in your own backyard or in a raised-bed garden benefits not only your health, but also your community, especially since food insecurity remains a daily struggle for more than 800 million people worldwide. Throughout cities, urban gardeners are turning to pots, rooftops, raised soil beds, and abandoned lots to grow their own food. With a modest amount of space and some initiative, you can skip the aisle filled with heavily sprayed conventional produce at your neighborhood supermarket. Consider raised-bed gardening: it’s one of the most popular ways to create your own backyard produce section. Raised-bed gardens are spectacularly versatile and can house any number of plants, including vegetables, fruits, perennials, shrubs, trees, and annuals. When it comes to filling your bed, remember to add organic materials and keep your raised bed well-drained, well-fertilized, and well-covered to prevent weeds and bug damage. Here local residents, Michelle Long, loves growing a variety of vegetables in her raised bed garden. Kimberly Millar and her daughter, Kenley, grow pineapples together in their back yard! Not only does gardening and growing your own veggies have great health benefits, you can exchange food with your friends. Grow on, girls! Grow on!

The term “hydroponics” refers to growing plants in a water-based medium without the use of soil. Mediums within this category include water alone, a perlite mixture, or the increasingly popular medium of coconut husks. The most important component of hydroponics is the nutrients used to feed the plant. The nutrients provide the plant with the necessary elements that would typically be available in farm rich soil. Overall, vertical hydroponic gardening saves 85% more water compared to other traditional gardening methods. In addition, the yield from hydroponic gardens is much higher than a traditional backyard garden.
Advantages of Hydroponic Vertical Gardening:
Sustainable Backyard Gardening with Hydroponics
G
rowing your own veggies all year can be fun for the entire family, budget friendly and HEALTHY! Many families understand the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, young children often don’t understand how plants are grown or where they come from. Many people want to garden or grow plants, but don’t believe they can. With the decline of the small farm, children and many adults do not understand or know the joy of gardening. A garden can be indoors in an area with ample light, outdoors, or in a greenhouse or shade house. Gardening can be done in soil or in a soilless growing media. Vertical gardening is a method of growing plants and vegetables that decreases the space needed and also decreases the amounts of fertilizer, water and pesticides used. Vertical growing requires less energy because it utilizes space more efficiently. Vertical gardening is not expensive and can be done virtually anywhere that there is sun and water. www.portfolio-verobeach.com
• More production in less space • Plants grow quicker and have higher yields • Less soil-borne pests and diseases since there is no soil • No weeds • Less water, fertilizer and pesticides • Cleaner, more nutritional product • Reusable growing container • Insulated growing container for better root growth • Easier to plant and harvest • Good for our planet! A simple vertical garden has been developed for the family backyard garden. It can grow 120 plants in a space that is 4’ x 15’, an area less than 50 square feet. This is 8-10 times less space than the normal outdoor garden would require. This type of system is completely automated. It will water and feed itself on a daily basis and up to a week without any attention from you. Weeds are never an issue. Come see these amazing hydroponic growing systems, visit our large hydroponic farm, and take home some of our harvested daily fresh produce. You’ll taste the difference immediately and you’ll love growing your own food and eating it! Florida Veggies & More 6755 37th Street Vero Beach (772) 559-5641 www.flveggies.com September-October 2014

memory lane
still rooted From Humiston to Willis and Now the Lowther’s
T
he land on the corner of Highway 60 and Avalon holds special memories for another Vero Beach family, showing us that these breathtaking trees are more than a piece of Vero Beach; they hold heart warming memories and local family histories in their roots. Katharine B. “Kitty” Willis, moved to Vero Beach as a bride from her hometown of Titusville. She worked with her husband as a bookkeeper in their farming business until his death, and then opened her own clothing store, The Hawaiian Shop, on Ocean Drive. The store was well known for its large selection of authentic “moo-moo’s” and stayed in business for 34 years. Her daughter, Bebe Lowther, had four children: Joe, Gus, Tom and Holly. These siblings hold this property very dear to their hearts, as sweet childhood days were spent under the shade of the banyans. The Lowther family supports our efforts to ensure the preservation of these beautiful, historically significant trees. We asked the family to share some of their fondest memories: Joe: “My fondest memories were coming from Daytona to visit my grandmother and climbing all the trees with our cousins to see who could climb the highest.” Gus: “I’ll always remember trying to climb to the top of the trees and hide from everyone.” Tom: “I remember as a 10-year-old boy running as fast as I could down this one limb that extended out over what is now State Road 60. The limb felt safe to me, it seemed as if it were 10-feet in diameter, but I knew that if I fell it was about 8 feet down.” Holly: “I remember always swinging from the large root systems hanging down from the large trees. It always amazed me that when it rained, we would never get wet under the trees.” We hope that many more memories are yet to be made under these magnificent trees. We’re still continuing our efforts to preserve this piece of Vero’s past. When you see these trees and feel their age-old energy, you know why promoting this special place and ensuring its survival for future generations is so important. Unfortunately, these things take time so we’re learning to have a lot of patience too! If you want to help us get rooted, please contact us at Portfolio-Vero Beach Magazine, P.O. Rugby On!
R
ugby is the precursor to American football and has been played in the United States since about 1870. American football, as well as basketball, owes many of its characteristics to rugby. In fact, basketball was invented by James Naismith as an indoor alternative to rugby when the New England winters required an indoor game. Some of rugby’s characteristics such as quick switches between attack and defense, ball handling and committing defenders to attack space are all found in basketball. Some people equate rugby to tackle basketball on grass. Similarly, American football evolved with many of the same principles, strategies and tactics as rugby. However, there are several obvious differences. Rugby is played at a fast pace, with few stoppages and continuous possession changes. All players on the field, regardless of position, can run, pass, kick and catch the ball. Likewise, all players must also be able to tackle and defend, making each position both offensive and defensive in nature. There is no blocking of the opponents like in football and there are a maximum of seven substitutions allowed per team. A match consists of two 40-minute halves. Considered one of the most violent games on the planet, proper techniques and practice can make it as safe as American football with pads. Come get dirty! If you don’t get dirty, you didn’t play!

Commitment, Dedication and New Treatment Options for Women with Breast Cancer
I Dr. Robert A. Gardner
28
September-October 2014
bet someone you know has or had breast cancer. Over the past 50 years, treatment for breast cancer has greatly improved, thanks to the dedication and commitment of physicians like Dr. Robert A. Gardner. He is an amazing and caring physician who specializes in the treatment of breast cancer for women (and men). I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gardner and his wonderful staff. Immediately, they make you feel like family. His practice is located just a short drive away in West Palm Beach and once you meet him and his staff, you’ll feel right at home. Death from breast cancer can be prevented if you catch it early enough. Get screened. Do your annual mammograms. Do your semi-annual breast ultrasounds. Be pro-active. Eat healthy. Stress-less. As of July 2014, Dr. Gardner is now offering electron intraoperative radiation therapy (e-IORT) for breast cancer treatment. This is a major breakthrough in breast cancer treatment because we are able to offer equally effective yet kinder, gentler and much faster treatment for breast cancer than the traditional 5-6 weeks of radiation after surgery. With today’s new program and electron beam machine, the patient may receive about a two minute dose of high-energy electron intraoperative radiation therapy to the breast tissue near where the breast cancer used to exist. The breast is reformed with onco plastic surgery and then the non-irradiated skin is closed and the patient can go home. In properly selected patients the breast cancer surgery and radiation treatment can be completed in a day. Please note that we use stainless steel protectors behind the breast as we radiate through the surrounding breast tissue to protect the heart, lung and ribs, so these do not get any radiation. This stainless steel disc stops the radiation completely from penetrating the other organs and is removed before we repair the breast. Typically, a sentinel lymph node is sampled at the same time under the same anesthesia. The total operation takes about two hours to do and that includes the set up and
delivery of the radiation therapy at surgery. The dose given is 20 Gray of radiation. Some patients will be candidates for what is called a boost in the operating room. This is a dose of 10 Gray (e-IORT) to the area surrounding where the cancer used to be for the purpose of reducing recurrences. This has been shown to be extremely effective in reducing local recurrence. In such cases, a short course of abbreviated whole breast radiation therapy is typically offered as well and can be done near where the patient lives. One of the benefits of this treatment is that it allows a woman to come into the hospital and be treated in a single day. In many cases her treatment is complete as far as surgery and radiation therapy goes. When we get the final pathology report back, we can discuss if she’ll benefit from hormonal therapy, and in certain very select cases, chemotherapy, which is required less and less as we get into very early detection and diagnosis. The mainstay of early detection and diagnosis is mammography, which in my opinion, should be offered to every woman age 40 through at least 80 on an annual basis. A common question is what are the side effects of electron intraoperative radiation therapy? The common side effect is a 4% incidence of what is called liponecrosis. This is an area of the breast usually small in nature where fatty tissue dies and a thick fluid, about the size of a small marble collects. We resolve this by withdrawal of that fluid with an aspiration under ultrasound guidance and local anesthesia.
Q: Are there side effects to the skin with this technique where single-dose intraoperative radiation therapy was given for breast cancer treatment? A: The skin is actually not radiated so there are no short-term or known long-term problems associated with the skin itself. Other benefits of doing e-IORT, are that it presents kinder, faster, gentler treatment which restores a woman’s health quickly so that she can resume her normal life. Typically, a matter of a few days after surgery.
Q: How many places are currently doing this in the United States? A: There are about 12 centers doing this in the United States. www.portfolio-verobeach.com
Our e-IORT Team
Q: Are there any other forms of intraoperative radiation therapy, and if so, why don’t you use those? A: There are two other systems using low-energy radiation therapy that produce photons that may not be as effective as electrons in achieving the desired treatment results with the fewest number of problems and complications. Those systems cost about half of what the LIAC – intraoperative electron radiation device costs. I have elected not to offer those systems to our patients because after about 10 years of study and asking questions all over the world, it is my conclusion, as a very experienced breast surgeon working with a radiation therapist, that the results are better with electron intraoperative radiation therapy. There are less complications and less time under anesthesia as well.
A: The machine costs about $1.2 million. For training, we sent two breast surgeons, a radiation therapist and a physicist from our hospital to Milan, Italy. We went into the operating room and were trained there as well as through many presentations and lectures. The cost varies at each facility as determined by the radiation oncologist working jointly with his or her administrator to bring the service to the patient. Typically, some or all of the cost is covered by insurance by negotiation in advance of the treatment.
Q: Is this treatment being offered in other places in the world? A: There are at least 80 other treatment centers in the world offering these electron intraoperative radiation therapy treatments now ranging from Belgium to Japan. About 30,000 patients a year who need treatment for breast cancer are being offered this treatment in the U.S. as of this year.
Q:
How many cases have been treated in the United States compared to treatment in other parts of the world? A: Intraoperative therapy has been used to treat between 20,000 and 25,000 patients across Europe, the Middle East and Far East. It has been used to treat approximately 400-450 patients in the U.S. in recent years.
Q: Why is the United States is so slow to adopt this technology if it’s been demonstrated to be effective in all of those other countries? A: Traditional treatment for breast cancer in the U.S. has been to remove a portion of the breast including the tumor and then to treat the patient with 6-7 weeks of radiation therapy to the entire breast. As the surgeon I cannot do SurRad (surgery and radiation therapy same day) alone. This procedure requires the active engagement and participation of radiation therapist who had studied this technique elsewhere and wished to bring it to the community. I can speak from personal experience that it has been difficult to bring this program to Florida. I have been turned down by 5 hospitals when presenting this to t hem because of radiation therapist and hospital administrators declining the program.
Q: Has this technique been verified in Europe?
A: The technique has been extensively studied, verified and validated. The results were published in journals in Europe as recently as December of 2013 with ongoing analysis leading to the conclusion www.portfolio-verobeach.com
Q: Are there any other places in the state
by the United Kingdom to add this system to their list of treatments for breast cancer. To date there have not been any significant recent advanced publications from the U.S. because there are so few cases and they are so widely scattered even though we are collecting the data to publish. It will be sometime before we can collect enough cases in the U.S. to analyze our results and make sure that they compared favorably to what is going on in Europe, which is our expectation.
Q: How did you learn of this technique? A: I have been to Milan, Italy to the
European Institute of Oncology which is the leading breast cancer treatment center in the world. I first heard about this technique 10 years ago when Dr. Veronessi was treating women who got a single-dose radiation therapy in the operating room and no postoperative radiation therapy. I ended up going into the operating room there on multiple different visits.
of Florida, Georgia, or Alabama that are delivering electron beam treatment? A: At the present time, our center here in Palm Beach County is the first in the state to deliver this treatment and make it available to patients with breast cancer. It is the only facility offering electron intraoperative radiation therapy in the state of Florida or the surrounding states so far.
Q: What does SurRad represent?
A: SurRad stands for surgery and radiation for breast cancer in a day and is an evolution from maximum tolerable treatment (mastectomy) to minimal effective treatment (segmental resection and radiation same day).
Q: Why have you spent 10 years bringing this program to Florida? A: Because it is the right thing to do in service of the women of our state and someone had to do it. For more information about this exciting new treatment, call the Palm Beach Breast Institute at (561) 881-9100, or visit breastquestion.com.
Q: What is the cost of that additional team in the operating room and equipment necessary to deliver the treatment? September-October 2014

r. Johnson Hagood is one of fewer than 400 dentists worldwide to receive accreditation from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists. It is an honor that speaks to a high level of achievement and competency. It is for this reason that Dr. Hagood has become a favored lecturer, visiting faculty member, and guest teacher at dental institutions of higher learning throughout the country. The L.D. Pankey Institute in South Florida has been recognized for more than four decades as being in the forefront of dentistry; they improve the skill sets of dentists, technicians, team members and patients through comprehensive advanced education. Dental professionals from across the globe travel to The Pankey Institute to learn the latest techniques. It is there that Dr. Hagood teaches the latest concepts in the use of composites in cosmetic dentistry. Spear Education in Scottsdale, Arizona is another advanced dental education center renowned for their masterful curriculum, gifted instructors, and hands-on training delivering a fully engaged learning experience. Dentists and dental practitioners seeking to elevate their knowledge of the industry will travel to Spear for targeted, immersion continuing education. Dr. Hagood regularly teaches cosmetic and occlusion (bite related) procedures there to other dentists seeking to enhance their skills. Dr. Hagood balances his practice in Vero Beach with lectures across the country, such as a recent invitation by the West Coast Dental Society’s meeting at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, FL, and a visit to another elite study group of restorative dentists and specialists called the Capital Study Club who meet in Baton Rouge, LA for their annual career enrichment seminar. In addition to his cosmetic dentistry practice and educational activities, Dr. Hagood also offers the sub-specialty of non-invasive treatment of patients suffering TMD, also known as TMJ. Although millions of Americans suffer from variations of this disorder, help is difficult to find as treatment is rarely taught in dental or medical schools. Dr. Hagood has trained extensively in several programs including Piper Education (PiperEducation.com). Dr. Hagood and his family live in Vero Beach. When he is not working, he is an accomplished artist and has had several showings of his collection of landscape works in oils at local galleries. Joys of Home Gardening
M
ounting evidence suggests that our food selection makes a huge impact on how we look and feel, as well as our overall longevity. The awareness that a healthy diet is more complex than reducing calorie counts and avoiding fat and/or carbs has resulted in a new demand for more organic products and access to readily available, more wholesome produce. The increased availability of organic foods in supermarkets and specialty stores is a great boom for the health of our population. However, the shift in the items in our grocery baskets toward more fresh produce and organic options is taking a toll on our pocketbooks, making these healthy diet changes a financial burden for some. A wonderful way to obtain the healthiest, most delicious local produce possible would be to consider growing it yourself! Home gardens are much easier than you may think and many find time spent in the garden meditative and a great stress reliever. The long growing season and mild climate here in Vero Beach make it possible to enjoy a bountiful crop year round. Even if you don’t have a yard to work with, you can plant a lovely array of herbs and veggies in pots, earth boxes, or raised/contained beds. This is the ‘greenest’ method of all, as you can control the quality of the soil and reduce the amount of fertilizer required to nourish your crops. Besides the joy of going to your garden to pick fresh herbs, lettuces, tomatoes and kale, perhaps the greatest gift of gardening is the appreciation you develop for your food. Many of us have become disconnected from the important process by which food comes from the farm to our table. From planting to harvest, the time spent in your garden tending your plants creates gratitude and a healthy attitude towards eating. Your homegrown produce will nourish both your body and soul! In my role as an Acupuncturist and Nutritionist, I see firsthand the consequences of people being overfed and undernourished. Our foods of convenience are calorie laden but nutritionally void, and have contributed to the development of the many chronic diseases of our time. Food is simply the best medicine we can give ourselves, and homegrown surpasses the conventional in health benefits. In my practice, I offer nutritional counseling and meal planning to help patients seeking to lose weight, improve diabetes, lower cholesterol, or reduce risk for chronic disease. rowing up with a backyard garden and frequenting farmers markets on a weekly basis was one of the best things my parents ever did for me. It taught me where food comes from, how to cultivate the land and a great deal of patience. Not all of us have a green thumb: however, starting your own garden may be easier than you think. It is important to know that in 1946, over 50% of the produce consumed in America was from our own backyard. Today, more and more of our food is shipped to our grocery stores from thousands of miles away. The worst part is that in order for the food not to spoil it must be picked before it is ripe. A tomato that is picked before it is ripe is missing 400 micronutrients as compared to a vine ripened tomato. This is one reason we are the most overfed and undernourished country in the world. Today, our food is lacking essential nutrition. Start small. Even if you live in an apartment, you can grow some of your own food. Eco the Worm
I
’ve always been an advocate for environmental health. I did the usual...recycled, didn’t litter, and placed the occasional bumper sticker on my car. I talked the talk, but never walked the walk. As a mother of a childhood cancer survivor, a grandmother, and a retired special education teacher, I knew that my minimal efforts weren’t enough. About four years ago, I visited an amazing working green space in downtown Atlanta called “Truly Living Well Urban Agricultural Center” and met the founder/director, Rashid Nuri. He inspired me to spread the word about healthy organic farming, educate local communities and yes, emphasize the importance of worms! The more I volunteered and visited, the more I wanted to share what I was learning. I wanted people, especially children, to start questioning the value of their food! I ceased unhealthy habits, started recycling programs at the school where I taught, and made it my mission to learn as much as I could and teach more…even outside the classroom! Upon retirement, I started my own publishing company, Little Worm Publishing, and wrote/ illustrated Eco in the Garden, about a little worm with a big job in an organic garden. This picture book addresses the importance of composting for healthier food and a cleaner environment. Now, I have the pleasure of traveling and visiting other gardens supported by communities that are actively involved in education. If we educate young children on the importance of a healthier life, they will become informed and productive adults who participate in the community. I have been vacationing in Vero Beach for three years, and am so pleased to see all the wonderful garden activity going on! With organic gardening, aqua cultures, and hydroponics available, this community has some great choices! All it takes is to eat seasonal, local and organic…and the help of a worm named Eco, of course!
Linda Oberlin is the owner of Little Worm Publishing. She is author/ illustrator of children’s books available for individual purchase through amazon.com. Cooking Up a Great Kitchen
F
all means homes buzzing with friends and family. Whether it’s back to school or upcoming holiday dinners, memories and special moments always seem to be made in the warmth of the kitchen. Big or small, your kitchen is the hub of all entertainment. So why not do it in style? Designing your kitchen for function and enhancing it with a dash of elegance is as essential for hosting that perfect holiday dinner or party as it is for fostering a great conversation over coffee or wine. Identifying goals and priorities that are unique to what you want will help start this process. Kitchen cabinetry and layout is always a significant component of measuring a home’s value, and can help create a warm and welcoming kitchen fit for entertaining. A fair amount of space between your prep sink and cook top can be crucial. You don’t want to have to walk too many steps with your veggies, but you also want to have enough space for preparing that fantastic feast. Creating a working flow in your kitchen is key for a happy cook. Large, beautiful countertops give just the right amount of space for cooking and prep, and

double as a place to catch up with old friends, browse the mail, or chat with family while preparing a meal. Leaving proper clearances around your kitchen makes the working area suitable for more than one person. And who wouldn’t love some extra help in the kitchen? To make it truly spectacular, add custom designed glass doors with lighting to accent your ceramics or a hood for an impressive look and a bold statement. Remodeling your kitchen can be fun just like cooking, you just need the right ingredients! At Snow’s, we pride ourselves on using only the finest “ingredients” in designing or remodeling your custom kitchen! “In every job that must be done there is an element of fun.” ~ Mary Poppins Let the fun begin! here are so many reasons to have your wedding outside and so many reasons photographers love it too! It’s a great opportunity to shoot in amazing lighting. We can create some dramatic scenes with that natural backlighting from the sun or feature the details of your wedding in a way that stands out and brings your day to life. We love being able to use the wide variety of scenery. A white wall on one side, pastures on another, and some properly placed trees create amazing photo opportunities with one-of-a-kind shots. After all, we want to capture your wedding day memories and make the day feel and look as incredible as you do when you say “I Do!” We are a husband and wife team based out of West Palm Beach. We travel everywhere and anywhere. We feel blessed to be able to call this our job and love that we get to spend every minute together doing what we love. We are natural light photographers, which means we use the sun to create images from the airy and whimsical to the dramatic and defining to tell your story. Our main focuses in our business are weddings and engagements. We focus on weddings because we love to capture love. The exciting adventure and the emotions on a wedding day are so beautiful to us. The excitement of getting ready, the tears of that long awaited first look, and the pure happiness when exiting the reception with family and friends around to send off the new husband and wife, we capture it all and we love it! All of that being said, we really love being outdoors and decided to showcase that in this shoot. After getting together with a couple of other local talented individuals (namely Lara Andrews at Lara’s Theme, Audrey Mosel at Seahorse Lane Boutique and Jessica Letts from Classy Cupcakes), we came up with a great way to showcase what an outdoor wedding can offer. We all felt this idea of “glamping wedding style” with some Florida flair like Lilly Pulitzer or some good ol’ Florida oranges, could offer some great ideas for that perfect wedding day. We hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we enjoyed taking them! Kailey Faith Photography 772-563-7143 www.kaileyfaith.com www.kaileyfaithblog.com www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Ahoy matey! Walking on Water
The Sky is the Limit
No Limits Academy is a nonprofit Christian school that was established in 2008, by Laura Joslin and Roberta Neves. Joslin, a parent of two children with cerebral palsy, and Neves, a physical therapist, made it their mission to serve children who are physically disabled due to brain injury, spinal call cord injury or a degenerative condition. The individual classrooms structures are designed to advance children with brain injury and other physical disabilities, and the results of the innovative and creative methods of education can be seen in the 36 kids served by the school. Children with physical disabilities need excellent therapy to reduce the effects of a growing body with a brain injury. Ability Plus Therapy provides physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to the children at No Limits Academy. It was established by Laura in 2004 to provide intensive physical therapy and was the second clinic of its kind to open in the United States. Since 2004, the clinic has seen children with physical disabilities from all over the world that come for three weeks of intensive pediatric physical therapy. Laura’s sons are both quadriplegics and through therapy, her oldest went from wheelchair-bound to walking on hand canes and her youngest from not being able to lift his head off of the floor to walking with a walker! Believe in the potential of people with disabilities! When Hans Wagner

with Riding His Waters Paddleboard approached Laura with the idea of putting these kids on paddleboards, she did not hesitate. This year was the first “Walking on Water” event. Though there was a little trepidation with parents who had never thought of putting their physically disabled children on a paddleboard, they trusted the teams of medical experts and paddleboard professionals. The event was amazing! The children had an exciting day and the smiles on their faces spoke volumes. The ability to give them “no limits” that day was as special for them as it was for all the volunteers. All donations from the event went to No Limits Academy. If you would like to know more about next year’s event please email Laura at Laura@ abilityplustherapy.com, call 321-255-6627, visit www.nolimitsacademy.com or contact Hans Wagner at 321-720-1559 or hwangner@sorensenrealestate.com.

The Earth is 75% water.
Earth’s water is a resource, a playground and a home away from land for many. Boaters know the value of a good day on the water; it’s a retreat for the soul, the mind and the body! Some claim the Fountain of Youth is saltwater. We’ll never know for sure but there is no doubt that boating keeps you young. As the love for the lifestyle gets passed down through the generations, a respect for the water becomes second nature, which is essential to ensuring its protection. Here in Vero Beach we have it all. The Indian River Lagoon basin is 156 miles long from Ponce Inlet (Volusia County) to Jupiter Inlet (Palm Beach County). The basin offers 2,284 square miles of boating fun. There is an endless list of things to explore and do! Our location also features easy ocean access and proximity to the Bahamas. We have a twelve-month boating environment and are lucky to call the Treasure Coast our home. As boaters, we get to enjoy our local waters and we should strive to be responsible stewards of our waterfront so it can be enjoyed by generations to come. As today’s boats and engines become more economical and environmentally sound, spending time on the water continues to be a great way to spend quality time with friends and family. Come join us on the water and become a part of a lifestyle that refreshes, reinvigorates and relaxes…

Dog
rom time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent or costs involved for just a dog. Some of my proudest moments have come about with just a dog. Many hours have passed with my only company being just a dog, and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by just a dog and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of just a dog provided comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it’s just a dog, you will probably understand phrases like just a friend, just a sunrise, or just a promise. Just a dog brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. Just a dog brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of just a dog I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. For me and folks like me, it’s not just a dog. It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. Just a dog brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday people can understand it’s not just a dog. It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being just a man or woman. So the next time you hear the phrase just a dog, smile, because they just don’t understand. Feed Your Pet Like You Feed Your Family… After All, Aren’t They?
S
hopping at our local farmer’s market recently caused us to consider how foods affect us, as well as our pets. Organically grown food is a fascinating nutritional subject, but more importantly for us, it opens up the concept of pet food formulation. As pet owners, we want to give our animals the best nutrition possible, but a home prepared meal, even one of sustainable ingredients, may not provide everything our pets need. Homemade pet food formulation is good in concept as the ingredients are usually of good quality, but it should be remembered that what constitutes a perfectly balanced meal for ourselves can be far different for our pets. Care must be made as to the percentage of carbohydrate, protein, and minerals included in our pets’ diet and should be formulated closely under the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist and your pets’ personal veterinarian. The dietary requirements of a pet with chronic illness, such as kidney or liver damage or diabetes, differ greatly from a young growing pet and from a normal, healthy adult pet. Fatty or fried foods that we may find delicious can make our pets sick, predisposing them to pancreatitis or gastroenteritis, which often results in our pets having diarrhea or vomiting episodes requiring help from your veterinarian. Similarly, raw meat diets are risky to your pets for the same reasons we would not eat a raw meat diet. Other ingredients we consider delicious in our diet can be deleterious to our pet. For example, foods such as garlic or onions, if ingested in excess, may result in oxidative damage to your pets’ red blood cells resulting in Heinz body anemia. Raisins or grapes, when ingested in excess, can cause acute kidney disease. And, of course, we all know about chocolate. Chocolate, a greatly loved food by many pet owners can result in toxicity in our dogs and even cats. With some chocolates being more toxic than others, it’s a good rule of thumb to just keep all chocolate away from our pets. Sugar substitutes are another area of concern. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener often found in many sugar free candy and gums and is dangerous to our pets, especially dogs. Xylitol consumption can result in hypoglycemia, seizures and even liver dysfunction. These are just a few examples of foods that are simply best to refrain from sharing with our animals. Of course with any questions or concerns on how to feed your pet, it is always best to ask your veterinarian, who is aware of your pets’ special needs. I hope these tips and guidelines can help you and your pets maintain a healthy lifestyle together. With proper pet food formulation, sustainable living for pets is indeed achievable! Charles B. eat shop play beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming
into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

horoscope
The cooler days are almost here! Other than the Full Moon on September 8th, the Lunar Eclipse on October 8th, and the Solar Eclipse on October 23rd, we should have a pretty calm start to the fall season. Do yourself a favor, and use this time to simplify your life. All of us could stand to clear out whatever no longer serves our highest good. ARIES: Fall is all about relationships for Rams! Other than a possible power struggle on September 8th, you are in for some sweet times. October makes you even more outgoing than usual. You may feel the urge to blow up on October 8th, but stay calm because overall this is a happy time.
SCORPIO: The Full Moon on September 8th has you feeling a lot of emotions regarding romantic partners and children. Then, the Solar Eclipse on October 23rd will make you feel like you are riding a rocket. Lots of changes in your world, and most of them are for the better!
TAURUS: It might be the end of the summer season, but this September you are gearing up for some spontaneous fun. Being a Bull, you don’t really like change or last minute invitations, but say “yes” to any opportunity to meet new people...especially if you are single! Mercury goes retrograde again on October 4. Someone from your past might reappear during the last three weeks of October.
SAGITTARIUS: Around September 21st you should not overlook any suggestions to meet someone who could help you with work or your love life. Listen up! There is an easy and cooperative aspect in early October that favors all Sagittarians. However, just be on the lookout during the Lunar Eclipse on October 8th because it may feel like an unpredictable time. Your mission is to stay focused on all the good that is happening around you.
GEMINI: The entire month of September may make you feel as though you are being pulled in too many directions. Make sure you pay attention to your loved ones at home. You can easily get distracted by all your projects and forget to be an elegant listener! October 15th might bring some fireworks. Use your cheerful disposition to settle any friction. CANCER: On September 24, a New Moon has all Cancers either looking for a new home or fixing up their domestic situation. Start making the steps towards change now. There are two eclipses in October. Don’t let situations that are bothering you stay simmering in the background. Speak your truth and then stand in your truth. LEO: Mid September has all you Lions in the spotlight. Something has you energized, and the good news is that you are really getting noticed. By the end of October, it will be crystal clear that all your hard work was not in vain. Be sure to take time to celebrate and honor what you have accomplished. VIRGO: Your mission in life is to get things organized and make things clear. When Mercury goes in reverse on October 4th, you have to learn to go with the flow. Try not to let every little thing get under your skin. Try to enjoy Venus, the planet of love, being in your sign starting on September 5th. Take heart, and realize more people are finally on the same page as you. LIBRA: The New Moon is in your sign on September 24th. This is a great time to start a diet or work on ending a bad habit. There are clear signs that relationships are taking center stage this fall. With the Mercury retrograde period also being in Libra, you are feeling extra motivated to focus on whatever you would like to change about yourself. 58
September-October 2014
CAPRICORN: All Goats are in their power zone this September and October. Whatever it is that you want, now is the time to put all your efforts into achieving your dreams. During the first week of October, you might be more fiery than usual. People may be surprised by what comes out of your mouth. By Halloween, you will be back to your usual more demure self. AQUARIUS: Mercury will square off with your ruling planet, Uranus, on September 13. Some kind of unusual news could be coming your way. The whole month of September is rather like living inside a pinball machine. Expect lots of good times, weird times and everything in between. Mercury goes direct on October 25th and no one will be happier about that than you! PISCES: All those hard-working planets have been keeping you busy for weeks. Around September 21 you should plan a vacation. In October, fiery Mars will make sure you get credit for something you’ve put your efforts into. Just remember, when Mercury goes retrograde from October 4th- 25th, if something doesn’t feel quite right, wait to make any big decisions until after the 25th.
Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
