h! Summertime! One of my favorite times of the year. Remember when summer vacation meant slowing down, immersing yourself in the beauty of nature, and finding joy in the simple pleasures? Well, who needs to go on vacation when you live in Vero Beach? I hope this issue will inspire you to plan your dream wedding or

to buy a house (my family just did). In our Summer Fun Guide, we’ve included the “coolest” Guy Goods & Gadgets (yes, I’ve seen you guys reading Portfolio too), some beautiful Girlie Garb, the hottest Summer Camps for the kids, plus a few things for the “big kid” in all of us! Scuba diving, surfing, stand up paddleboarding (my fav), or skim-boarding, are just a few of the things you can do this summer to have fun. Celebrate your independence this summer; learn something new! To launch our summer issue, we’ve redesigned Portfolio with a whole new look

If you’d like to join us as a distribution location, please send me an email or drop me a note; we’d love to add you to the list. Several people have asked me if Portfolio is a franchise, it is not. It is an entity of Sandbox Magazine-FL, LLC, and it is not affiliated with any other publication. For me, Portfolio is a dream come true. I want to thank my advertisers who have stood by me while I get my feet planted in the sand. Let them know that you read about them here. Let’s all help Vero thrive as a community. Shop local. You have but one chance to make your day as perfect as possible. Be sure to have a great coordinator to insure this happens! Make sure you hire a local, reputable event/wedding planner, especially for a destination wedding.

Hottest Trends Cinematography videos are the latest craze. Classic weddings are always in demand. Vintage/eclectic mixes are what’s in now. It’s no longer a superstition to see the bride before the wedding. Pre-wedding photos are so cool! Hire a make-up artist. Cindy Goetz comes highly recommended. Delicious Trends by Ashlee Wykoff, Owner and Cake Artist, Frosting Cupcakes & Confections

T

oday’s wedding cake trends are far from the traditional white cake of years past. Couples are becoming more creative than ever and they want the design to reflect who they are as a couple. Color is the biggest trend we see at Frosting; more and more brides ask for bright, tropical colors for a summer wedding. Couples are also choosing cake design based on the design elements planned for their wedding. “Bling” cakes have become overwhelmingly popular, with requests for diamond ribbons and brooches that add lots of sparkle and a big “wow” factor to many of our cakes. Brooches offer additional sentiment since they can be saved and worn, and can eventually be passed on as family heirlooms. Living in such a beautiful beach side town, Frosting sees many destination weddings come to Vero Beach. Beach theme weddings are always popular – starfish, sand dollars, coral, and seashells adorn many of our wedding cakes and cupcakes. Tropical flavors such as key lime, coconut, and passion fruit are among the popular choices.

The “cupcake” wedding is another trend. Cupcakes are easy and couples like that a cake doesn’t need to be cut. It also provides a nice variety of choices for guests. Cupcakes can also be decorated according to a wedding’s colors or theme. Many brides still ask for a small cake as a crowning piece to their cupcake tower. The most exciting new trend for weddings is the “Groom’s Cake.” A bride often loves to surprise her groom with something special just for him! These spectacular creations can feature a groom’s favorite flavor and reflect what is most significant to him – football helmets, game fish, cigar boxes, and automobiles are often selected. The groom’s cake will hold a special place of honor at either the rehearsal dinner or the wedding. Trends continue to change, and the traditional, white wedding cake will always be a mainstay; but for now, couples enjoy the opportunity to request cakes that reflect their individuality. Nothing makes Frosting happier than to translate each couple’s style and vision into a gorgeous cake that tastes as good as it looks!

Beautiful Day, Beautiful Faces by Ralph M. Rosato, MD, FACS

A

wedding day is...filled with all those details we so carefully plan: the perfect hairstyle, gifts, flowers, jewelry, and dress. You are confident you have created the perfect palette and you want to feel fantastic about how you look as well. We all know the cliché that beauty is only skin deep, but on one of the most important days in life, your confidence should soar to reflect your beauty – inside and out. Not only the bride aspires to feel this way, but the mother of the bride, the mother-in-law, maid of honor, bridesmaids, and even guests of the wedding enjoy contributing to this special day by feeling beautiful too. Although you have diligently planned for the big event, complete confidence might come with a little help from your plastic surgeon. Most brides, and indeed many of us, are not ready for surgical facelift, but there are several options now available without surgery. Injectable fillers can help fatigue lines or soften unwanted wrinkles (e.g. Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane). Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are used to temporarily block muscle function resulting in softer lines and a lifting of your brow. Latisse can gradually thicken your eye lashes. Lite chemical peels, Obagi skin products, and lasers can improve skin tone and minimize discolored skin. Most of these treatments need to be done a few months before the big day since minor bruising and redness can result for a week or so. Also, because there can be side effects, treatments should be done by a physician trained in the use of these products. Side effects can include droopy facial muscles and lumps that may be felt or seen, so be careful to ask for only FDA approved treatments. Choose your physician wisely; your face depends upon it. Plastic surgery involves many choices; the first and most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. Choosing an American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) member surgeon ensures that you have selected a physician who: • Has completed an approved plastic surgery residency. • Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face, and reconstruction. • Operates only in accredited medical facilities. • Adheres to a strict code of ethics. • Fulfills continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety. • Is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or in Canada by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. So this summer, whether it is your wedding day, an anniversary, a reunion, or the vacation you have always wanted to take, enjoy all your beautiful days with a beautiful face! www.portfolio-verobeach.com

D ream of Living Here In Vero, life is different. We go with the current. Plan our day around the tides and follow the sun. Everywhere, life jumps all around us. It’s a simple life, rich with beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

It leaves a wake of longing to never want to leave‌

F

rom the beachside to the beautiful horse farms on the west side, Vero offers many options when considering the

purchase of a home. Choosing a home for you and your family is a big decision. Your choice depends

on you and your lifestyle and becoming acquainted with all the different areas in town will make your decision a little easier. Whether you dream of living here full time or just occasionally, you’ll be glad to call Vero home.

South Beach This area of the barrier island is known for its many gated waterfront communities with winding lanes, ancient oak trees, and lush tropical landscaping. Some of the amenities offered in these communities include deeded beach access, boat docks, golf, and tennis and, of course, some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the world.

Central Vero Beach Mainland Royal Palm Pointe, located on the waterfront of mainland Vero Beach, is a hotspot for locals and visitors alike. Here, everything from riverfront condominiums to shops and restaurants can be found, and most are accessible by water. It includes the Vero Beach Country Club golf course and the desirable area of charming homes that surround it. This central area is also home to the Vero Beach Airport that services private and charter flights to and from Indian River County. In addition, new city offices and the Indian River Memorial Medical Center are conveniently located here. The City of Vero Beach is growing and includes quaint family living, commerce, and waterfront entertainment.

real estate Central Beach Central Beach refers to a neighborhood on Vero’s barrier island which is centrally located near the city marina and Barber Bridge. Running from Iris Lane north to Live Oak, it is comprised of a grid of streets, many named after indigenous trees and flowers. Positioned between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean, Central Beach includes Riverside Park with its USTA tennis facilities and boat ramp, Memorial Island, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, and the Riverside Theatre complex. It is also the location of Beachland Elementary School. The central business district is home to a collection of posh boutiques, hotels, restaurants, and offices. Central Beach frequently hosts art shows, parades, and festivals that make it the hub for activity on the barrier island and reinforces its welcoming village feel. The beach itself can be accessed through the lovely oceanfront Humiston Park, Sexton Plaza, and the boardwalk at the north end of Ocean Drive. Coveted for its quiet residential streets, proximity to river and ocean, and the casually elegant style of Ocean Drive, Central Beach succeeds in retaining its small town character while charming residents and visitors alike.

North Beach The North Beach area of the barrier island includes Indian River Shores, a prestigious, five-mile long town within Vero Beach bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Indian River Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway to the west. Residents of Indian River Shores and Vero’s North Beach area share a quality of life that ranks among the best Florida has to offer.

North Island Luxurious Florida living can be found in Vero’s north island area, renowned for its prestigious waterfront communities and exclusive golf and beach clubs. North Island communities offer gracious estate homes, villas and oceanfront condominiums, as well as beach clubs, golf clubs, tennis, and fitness centers. Breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway can be enjoyed from riverfront homes and condominiums, and everyone can take pleasure in brilliant sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean. The Jungle Trail, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, meanders through Vero’s north beach area for bikers, joggers, and walking fans. Sebastian Inlet State Park, at the north end of Indian River County’s barrier island, offers world-class surfing, boating, fishing, and kayaking. Miles of sandy beaches and picnic areas that flank the gorgeous turquoise waters can be enjoyed year round. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

South Vero Beach Mainland Natural beauty and privacy are privileges enjoyed in Vero’s south mainland region. The historical McKee Botanical Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historical Places and awarded the 2002 Outstanding Achievement in Landscape Architecture, is home to an 18-acre subtropical jungle hammock. Upscale neighborhoods, such as Indian River Club, combine casual living with old-style Florida charm and thriving residential neighborhoods to appeal to a wide range of lifestyle tastes.

North Vero Beach Mainland This part of mainland Vero Beach is known for its variety of golf courses and golf communities. It is home to several award winning public and private courses frequented by locals and visitors. Numerous horse farms that buy, sell, breed, and show many types of horses for a variety of riders are also located in this desirable area. Open spaces and green fields offer an ideal topography for farms of all kinds. The Indian River County Fairgrounds is host to an array of events throughout the year, including concerts, dog and horse shows, and the annual Indian River County Firefighters Fair, much loved by all.

West Vero Beach Mainland Sprawling agricultural areas, polo fields, premiere shopping, tennis, and golf are all found in the western portion of Vero Beach. Outdoor living here is at its best, whether it is on horseback, on the golf course, or on the tennis court. The outlet mall provides ample shopping opportunity, with everything from J. Crew to Reebok. One unique aspect of the western mainland is Vero Beach’s aerodrome surrounded by homes, each equipped with its own airplane hangar. Features like the aerodrome help make the western part of Vero Beach not only a pleasant place to live, but one that accommodates a variety of lifestyles. 24 Summer 2012

It all starts out innocently enough. You take a surf lesson. You rent a board just to try it out. Surfing is about you and your board becoming one; it’s just you and the ocean. It’s also about how much fun you have riding the wave. It’s about the rush you get the first time you stand up and ride the “big one.” Once you’re hooked, all you’ll want to do is ride waves. And then you can’t imagine what life was like before you surfed. If you want to build strength, flexibility, and endurance – and have a great time, too – learn how to surf. Surfing is not only an excellent way to get outdoors and experience the wonders of the sea, it is a superb way to keep your whole body fit and healthy. The best way to learn how to surf is by taking a surf lesson from someone who knows what they are doing. Learning this activity at a surf school will provide you with the correct technique and allow you to try out different equipment. So what are you waiting for? Jump on board! Epic Sessions of Vero Beach provides paddle boarding, surfing and skim boarding lessons for the novice or amateur. A special thanks to Chris Ellison, owner of Epic Sessions, in Vero Beach, for assisting us with our Summer Fun Guide cover shoot and to Oliva Assaf, at Coreban Paddle Boards, for allowing us to use their awesome boards. Check out www.epic-sessions.com and www.coreban.com.

redefine rush So, you wanna walk on water? Well, almost. The fast-growing sport of standup paddleboarding (SUP) is a fun, easy way to go play on the water. Paddle the ocean surf as well as lakes and rivers —no waves required! Paddleboarding offers an amazing full-body workout, and since you stand at your full height, you will enjoy amazing views of everything from sea creatures to what’s on the horizon. The skills you will learn are paddling technique, water safety, stance, and body positioning. It’s almost like walking on water! 34 Summer 2012

If you think the Atlantic is beautiful from the beach, just wait until you view it from 20-50 feet underwater! Rock reefs, colorful fish, sea turtles – it all happens just below the surface. To take full advantage of that scenery, you’ll have to get SCUBA certified first. The good news? It’s just a weekend away! A typical class involves a night of introduction, followed by a weekend of further instruction and practice in a pool. Afterward, it’s into the deep blue sea for your check-out dives with an instructor, and then you’re CERTIFIED! Next stop is a few atmospheres below. Learning to dive is fun for the entire family!

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe.

Photo by TPIX Theresa Reynolds Photography

TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach and find a trash can. Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities.

LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.
