Until now,Vero Beach has been a special place of arrivals and departures for my family. Once you have experienced life here however, other places start to seem secondary. No visit was ever long enough and I am happy to say we are now here to stay. Our goodbyes have officially ended and we are now part of the scenery we couldn’t bear to live without.

I still pinch myself daily to make sure it’s“real”and I’m not just dreaming. This town has captured my heart and my soul… I love everything about it.The people that call Vero home are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. From all walks of life, each person has a uniqueness all their own, like taking a walk on the beach and finding the most amazing shell, it’s a collection; all a beauty to behold. I am still learning my way around town, and I am still exploring the unknown. As I embark on my journey of truly discovering the BEST of Vero Beach, I hope you will join me as well.Together, we can discover the Treasure Coast, a rare gem in the sea of life!

Ride a horse.Watch a polo match.Take a walk on the beach. Go shopping. Buy a house. Play golf. Catch a fish. Surf. Dive for a lobster. Paddle with a manatee.Take in a show.Visit the museum. Browse the farmers’markets. Rent a bike. Charter a boat. Read a book. Sip a drink. Do nothing…the choices are endless…

Welcome to Portfolio Vero Beach!

Count your blessings, as I do daily, that if you’re here, even for a brief moment, a few weeks, or forever, for business or for pleasure, you’re lucky enough! See you at the beach,

Penny

It’s p l season in vero beach

P

olo season is in full swing (literally!) Pack a picnic, and bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Grab the kids (including the family dog as long as he is on a leash), along with a cooler full of your favorites and come out to enjoy an afternoon of tailgating polo-style. The polo matches take place at The Polo Grounds at Pointe West every Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., from now until April 1st where excitement reigns as ponies and players compete among the thunder of hoofs and swinging mallets in this fast-paced “Sport of Kings”dating back to 5th century B.C. Persia. But, there is little pomp and circumstance at the Polo Grounds during half time when the kids can stomp the divots on the polo field and run like wild ponies themselves. Come out and see for yourself; it’s a great time had by all! How it’s played: • Polo fields comprise of 10 acres – approximately 300 yds by 160 yds (think 10 football fields) • Mallets are made of a bamboo shaft with a hardwood head. The polo ball which used to be wooden, is now made of plastic. • Most polo horses are thoroughbreds. They use this breed because they have the stamina needed to run up and down the polo field. The horses are trained for several years to develop the quick stopping, turning and game savvy skills. The lower legs are wrapped for their protection along with their tails. These horses are highly trained and conditioned. • All players are registered with the United States Polo Association and have been given a handicap based on their playing ability and expertise. Handicaps range from -2 to +10. If the handicaps for each team differ, goals are awarded at the start of the match to even it out. Each team is comprised of 4 players that play specific positions: Number 1 – plays offense & moves forward to take a pass to goal Number 2 – plays offense Number 3 – is the Quarterback Number 4 – plays defense • Any player may make a goal no matter what position they play. Players are matched against the other team whom they seek to “bump”(with shoulder & horse) or“hook”(intertwine mallets) to keep the opponent from taking the ball. When the ball is hit, it creates an imaginary line. If another player crosses the line, it’s a foul. Goals are

scored when the team hits the ball between the goal posts.Teams change direction after every goal. •M ost matches have 7 minutes chukkers (similar to periods). Players switch horses between each chukker.A horn will sound when 30 seconds remain in the chukker and twice to announce the end of the chukker. Tune your radio to 96.7fm to hear a live broadcast of the match. For more information, call 772.778.2224 or visit www.verobeachpolo.com. Admission: $10 for car and driver, $5 for each additional person (12 & under are free). $50 reserves your tailgate spot for each game day (which includes up to 6 people).

Mark your Sunday calendars!

Sometimes, when we read a great novel or story, hear a particularly moving piece of music, view a painting or sculpture or watch a play, we are transported to another place and time. Whenever this happens, our lives are forever enriched.

MATTER

The Cultural Council is the designated arts agency for Indian River County. We are the voice of the arts, and work to improve the lives of citizens and the work of artists and arts organizations in the county. Our mission is clear… we are advocates, promoters and partners of literary, performing and visual artists. Making art is the essence of being human; culture is the secret of survival. The Cultural Council helps people see how our collective well-being depends on recognizing the public interest in supporting the arts.

Art Educates Us

• The arts have positive impacts on the lives of children and young people. They do better educationally, have greater tolerance for diversity, volunteer more, and are more employable. • Arts education is critical to student learning and future citizenship. • “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Pablo Picasso • Arts education is about being better at what we do: career, family, life–because it allows us to consider the potential and possibly make it reality. • Education in the arts creates whole people who in turn make communities whole.

why Arts

Art Inspires Us

• Creativity is the currency of the future; the success of theAmerican society in coming generations will depend on thec reativity and innovation of our workforce. • People place a higher priority on where they live, rather than for whom they work. They prefer to live in creative communities, with the cultural and recreational amenities that complement their creative lifestyles. • Culture and the arts are unique in that they operate at the intersection of quality of life and economic development. • Investment in local cultural and artistic development results in economic well-being provides a competitive edge based on our uniqueness and local human capital, and is a natural part of the growth of a community. • Arts and culture are assets with the intrinsic ability to generate community value, including economic value. Rather than, “The arts deserve support”, we now say, “Arts and culture build community value.”

Matter

Art Engages Us

• Involvement in arts and culture benefits the community beyond the economic sphere. • Adults who actively participate in their cultural interests are more likely to vote, volunteer their time, contribute to charity and be active in their communities. • In a diverse society arts and culture provide an essential common ground. They foster improved cultural understanding, tolerance, and civic engagement among all ages. • Arts and culture are not a luxury, but a necessity. • Valuing, acknowledging and fostering creative expression for all residents is key to a vibrant and productive culture.

Remember your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day. For February, we are featuring the birthstone Amethyst (stone of piece), most valued member of the quartz family and adorned by Bishops and British Royalty.

For March, we are featuring the Aquamarine (latin for sea water), they are blessed with excellent clarity. These crystals can grow rather large and more intense in color – a green-blue.” Many confuse the Aquamarine with a Blue Topaz because of their color.

An

Afternoon

IN POLO SCHOOL at ASHWOOD “The pure joy I get from playing this sport is more than I could ever imagine.”

“It’s the second set of horses going out on the polo field, with these four children, my first class in every sense of the term. Our initial set was hit –or-miss-literally and I am filled with a determination to make this one a moment that will last a lifetime. We play a game –“take the ball to town”- we go in team formation, carrying the ball and passing the ball, lapping the polo field . It’s meant to establish a rhythm, a dance with four partners, but requires an ability to connect oneself during that dance with three extra partners, three other horses and a ball-the gossamer thread holding the group together. At first every effort ends at each child’s own horse, the end of each child’s mallet, and the inner voice that says my ball, my horse, my, my, me. But oh my darlings it gets much better than that …Lap after lap, the rhythm lightens, and everyone appears to be listening to a private yet imperceptible soundtrack.Ten minutes of a steady three-beat canter and now the group floats; the ball floats between the four children and at last they are finally there. The setting sun is gold on the green carpet of grass and I watch them ride, I am behind them on an ancient pony who knows that feeling so well, and she trembles in the company of it. I am fairly bursting with happiness-now they know; now they will always know what it feels like to have that perfect communion: four people and four horses floating in harmony as one. Never in their lifetimes will the world-man and Nature- have hearts that beat as one, but here, today, they will experience that perfect peace in life. In a word…polo.

here is an old adage that the more things change the more they stay the same. Perhaps this remains true because basic human needs never really change. One inherent need is to communicate our ideas and feelings with one another. We have even invented reasons and traditions around this specific need: the Christmas and Hanukah card,Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, newspapers and magazines, and even sign language. Perhaps we will never know who or when someone decided to pick up an instrument and create the first symbol that was meant to convey a human thought, but it is obvious from recent developments such as Facebook and Twitter, that people want to somehow connect with others. We want to say: Here I am.This is what I think. This is how I feel.We need to recognize others and have others acknowledge our existence. Our own magazine, Portfolio, reaches out to connect to its community and those who come to visit us, so we provide you here with a graphic representation of how the need to communicate has historically appeared to come full cycle in the face of technology. Enjoy the joke and have a February filled with hearts full of love!
