editor’s note

Okay, time to play! Summertime is finally here!

Splash into the pool, fire up

the barbeque, dine outside under the stars, go sailing, buy a boat and just get outside! We’ve got

great outdoor dining venues where you can start your day at sunrise with breakfast by the sea or

end your day kicking up your heels dancing the night away. The choices are endless. I have been feeling a little nostalgic lately. I love vintage photos, especially old family photos

and beach scenes. Whether its today or 1960, nothing says summer like a beach picnic with family and friends (and hopefully someone brought the cold beer!) I hope you enjoy our pictorial on

Vero’s Dolphinettes, a synchronized swimming team from the 1950’s and 60’s. Make sure you check out the North County Aquatic Center – it’s cool! With school ending and summer fun just beginning, our lives have become less chaotic and

F

or over 80 years, girls from all over Vero and many other places have packed their trunks and headed to the mountains of Hendersonville, NC, for an amazingly unchanging and delightful experience known as Camp Ton-A-Wandah. The camp has been owned by the Haynes family for three generations. Many campers’ families have also had generation-to-generation experiences there; scenic and temperate summers enhance the picturesque campus to create memories that are passed down from mother to daughter. Supervisor of Elections, Leslie Swan, is one of many local moms that sent her daughters packing. “Every summer my girls could not wait to spend several weeks at Camp Ton-A-Wandah. The wonderful friendships they developed have carried through their college years and into their adult life. Not only did my girls have fun at camp, they learned life lessons.” Ton-A-Wandah’s ties to nature and deep respect for the Native Americans who originally inhabited the mountains are the inspiration behind the camp’s “three tribes” approach to camaraderie and sports competition. Each camper is inducted into a tribe of either: Cherokee, Navajo or Mohawk. The three tribes are among Ton-A-Wandah’s oldest and most revered traditions. Back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, Sansi Smalley and her five sisters boarded a train in Miami bound for Ton-A-Wandah. The train made stops in cities throughout Florida, including Vero Beach. “I loved the train’s upper berth,” said Patty Smalley Bingham, whose granddaughter and niece will attend this summer. “The bathroom was scary with the open tracks right below the seat.” Her sister Marilyn chimed in, “I once pulled the emergency stop thinking it was a bathroom light!” Sally DiLucente is also sending her granddaughter, a third generation camper. “Lily will stay in the very same cabin I occupied 50 years ago. It’s so fabulous that the property has been impeccably maintained all these years. It’s like a wonderful chance to step back in time. We’ll share experiences across the decades.” Campers become accomplished in activities like horseback riding, rock climbing, tennis, swimming, kayaking and more, all alongside a spring fed lake. Right on the campus is a breathtaking waterfall, listed as one of the most beautiful in all of North Carolina. “Our name, Ton-A-Wandah, means “by the fall of water” and pays homage to this lovely spot where our tribal ceremonies are held,” said Garrett Graham, Camp Director. Boys also had the opportunity to enjoy a similar experience. Carl and Mark Fetzer boarded the train from Vero Beach in 1962 for “Camp Carolina.” Vero’s old timers will remember Jon Martindale; the area’s beloved and somewhat famous Red Cross swim instructor. In the summer, Jon boarded the train with the Vero kids and served as a boy’s counselor. “My favorite story was when we took a canoe trip but forgot the cooking water. It was Jon’s idea to cook our chicken in pink lemonade. That was the best chicken I ever tasted,” reminisced Carl Fetzer.

Pictured above, 2nd from right and gazing up, is Sansi Smalley. She went on to be an Orange Bowl Queen.

memory lane The Dolphinettes learned how to work together as a team and had to maintain “B” averages in school. Competition was fierce. The girls would compete for every vacancy. Millie started a junior team, known as the Ripplets. These young seventh and eighth graders would later become the next generation of Dolphinettes.

I

In 1951, the Dolphinettes were young ladies in high school that started out performing water ballet at the Windswept Hotel, which is now the Holiday Inn on Ocean Drive. Through the efforts of Mrs. Mildred Frasier, but more fondly known as Millie Bunnell, the Dolphinettes were one of Vero’s first claims to fame. Much as it was back then, Vero is still our year-round vacationland!

26 May-June 2013

www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Vero’s Dolphinettes were used in many marketing and publicity opportunities. Here, they are promoting our Indian River fruit! They traveled all over to perform their aquatic ballets which were once referred to as “the only one of its kind in the world!” From movies to major appearances, the Dolphinettes were a major influence in helping to promote Vero Beach as the vacation wonderland that it is today!

Vero Beach’s Dolphinettes came by to pose with Waldo Sexton on the “Santa Scala” or Holy Stairs in this 1961 photograph. The “mountain” is no longer here.

The Dolphinettes wore red signature Janzen swimsuits when they performed their swimming displays that were synchronized to music.

Massage The Healing Power of Hands

life well lived

With the day to day stresses of life, don’t you wish you could melt away your troubles with a relaxing massage? Is getting a massage on the beach at the top of your bucket list? How about in your own private home, cabana or courtyard? What about on your dock while the sun paints a breathtaking mural in the night sky? Getting a massage is a real treat, and in reality, we should all get massages more frequently than we do. Some people get massages when they have sore muscles or injuries; however, in a world of rushing from one appointment to the next, we should all treat ourselves better and get a massage. Unwind. Relax. Turn off your cell phone. Take care of YOU! Stop feeling guilty! Massages are so beneficial to our health. If done correctly, they help promote a healthier person on the inside by clearing out our brains and allowing us to “turnoff ” the world. So…what are you waiting for? Vitamin D

The sunshine vitamin

I

s the Florida summer sun sufficient enough for a healthy Vitamin D level? Current estimates suggest that 80% of Americans have a Vitamin D insufficiency no matter their geography, so let’s learn the facts about this essential nutrient.

How do we get Vitamin D?

We produce Vitamin D when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin. D is also added to dairy and cereals because natural sources are scarce. Salmon, tuna and mackerel provide the most Vitamin D when the fish is not farm raised. Vitamin D is sold as a stand-alone supplement and is included in calcium supplements and multi-vitamins.

What does Vitamin D do? Vitamin D helps our gut absorb calcium to strengthen and rebuild bones helping to prevent osteoporosis. Additionally, research shows an adequate Vitamin D level may reduce risk for cancer, especially of the colon, prostate and breast. Vitamin D is necessary for optimal immune function and helps reduce inflammation.

Sun exposure is limited due to the season, time of day, cloud cover and sunscreen. Sunscreens with SPF 8 or more appear to block the rays that make Vitamin D. Approximately 5–30 minutes of sun between 10am and 3pm twice weekly to the face, arms, legs or back without sunscreen is needed for sufficient Vitamin D. Additionally, inadequate intake of Vitamin D rich foods and poor absorption of the nutrient from the digestive tract lead to deficiency. As people age, skin cannot synthesize Vitamin D as efficiently. Also, the more melanin (dark pigment) in the top layer of skin, the lower the ability to produce Vitamin D from sunlight.

What should my level be? <30 - Considered Vitamin D deficiency 30–50 - Considered inadequate for bone and overall health ≥50 - Considered adequate for bone and overall health >125 - Potential toxicity

How do I test my Vitamin D level? Ask your Doctor or Acupuncture Physician to order a lab test for Vitamin D. It is best to check the Vit D3-25, OH form.

How should I supplement? Dosage recommendations vary. 4000 IU daily is considered the safe upper limit, however, short-term doses may be significantly higher to correct a deficiency. Most individuals do well with 2000 IU daily. Check your level routinely to ensure supplementation is effective as too low levels and too high levels adversely affect health. the dish There are some new veggies on the scene in Vero Beach! Florida Veggies & More recently opened on 37th Street. It is a non-profit organization, growing vegetables to donate to The Treasure Coast Food Bank, The Homeless Family Center and The Source. Lisa Anne and Dano Brenneman have long been volunteers at homeless and shelter facilities through their church, St. Mark’s Anglican outreach programs, and saw the need to provide fresh produce to supplement a diet of a majority of canned goods. Lisa’s sister, Meg Miller, has joined them in operating the farm. In addition, to the farm’s bounty, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice and local Indian River citrus is also available. They wanted the farm to highlight not only the farm produce but the best Vero Beach has to offer. The farm is unique in that it is hydroponic and utilizes organic farming processes. This allows more plants to be grown in a smaller space, without the use of chemicals. Vegetables available now include kale, swiss chard, beets, broccoli, collards, red cabbage, spinach, and a variety of herbs. Soon there will be a harvest of tomatoes, peppers, squash and zucchini. Florida Veggies & More is honored to assist guests at the farm in learning more about hydroponic growing and teach others how to have their own backyard hydroponic system. These systems can produce enough for a family or even a small produce market. Florida Veggies & More also has home and office delivery for everyone’s convenience!

The future of gardening is here! Water is one of our most precious resources. And another of our precious resources: acreage to farm, is becoming more expensive to maintain in gardens rather than developments. Hydroponic gardening is the answer to preserving and maintaining both our water and soil. The term hydroponic means growing plants in a water-based medium without the use of soil. Mediums within this category include water alone, a perlite mixture, or the increasingly popular medium of coconut husks. An important component of hydroponics is the nutrients used to feed the plant. The nutrients provide the plant with the necessary elements that would typically be available when planted in the soil. When hydroponic farming is in place, the nutrients are pumped to the plants in a drip system, which is a very efficient watering and feeding technique. Hydroponics makes this even more efficient by watering plants only 3 times a day for 3-4 minutes versus soil gardening which uses a much greater amount of water. Overall, hydroponics saves 85% more water compared to other gardening methods. This is especially good for conserving our water here in Florida! The yield from hydroponic gardens is impressive. Growers typically harvest 10x the yield of soil farming, meaning that in a space of 1 acre, 10 acres worth of products could be produced. Growing plants above the ground, vertically, also helps reduce exposure to insects and diseases. Most crops can be grown using hydroponics, including citrus! Hydroponics is here and makes a more efficient garden! www.portfolio-verobeach.com May-June 2013 33

local palette

In 1959, New York portrait artist, Joyce Ballantyne, painted the final rendition of the Coppertone “girl and dog” using her own daughter, Cheri, as her model. Although there were many hands involved in the creation and development of the famous logo, Joyce’s artwork as seen today has become an international symbol of Americana. She was a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago; and because of her excellence in oil portraiture, was commissioned by many notable celebrities. In addition to commercial and portrait artwork, she was also recognized for her hundreds of wildlife illustrations for Sports Afield magazine, as well as her famous Pin-up art of the 1940’s and many billboard advertisements. Joyce was married to Jack Brand for thirty-three years, who was a show host and television personality. Joyce’s older daughter, Coby, also modeled for many of her projects. Joyce passed away in 2006 in her home in Ocala at age 88. Cheri, the model, currently resides in Ocala managing a local health club and continues to make appearances sharing the Coppertone Story. She thoroughly enjoys the memories and countless “billboard by the beach” stories shared with her by all. “Mom and I truly enjoyed working on this print together as a mother-daughter project. She was able to hand sign 1000 copies before she passed and we welcome new members to the Coppertone Limited Edition Print owner family.” The Coppertone Baby will be making an appearance on May 18th at Chelsea’s on Cardinal Drive from 10:00-1:00 and 2:00-5:00pm. 36 May-June 2013

Treasures at the Beach There are so many beautiful treasures to be found on the beach... A huge variety of shells, gold and silver trinkets, ships and the occasional turtle shell. The beach is a plethora of beautiful things, that the sea has sought fit to grace our lives with… for our pleasure and amusement. Let us treasure those gifts from the sea and respect the sea for those gifts. Let us praise God for the gift of beauty He has given us. ClayGardening Pot C

lay pot gardens or “terrace gardens” are an easy way to take landscaping to a smaller scale. These container gardens can easily be rotated on a frequent basis by physically moving them to a new spot on your patio or changing the plantings based on the season. As for containers, the sky’s the limit for shapes, sizes and colors. Choices range from natural terra cotta to ceramic glazes in a myriad of hues. How then to decide which one? The simple answer that will guide you in the process is your clay pot garden needs to mirror... YOU! One fair warning, try to avoid shapes where the top of the pot is too narrow which will make removing last season’s planting difficult. Next, what to plant once you have selected your clay pots? As the “designer,” you must decide whether you want a formal look, or one that lends towards a lush and tropical appearance. Don’t be afraid to densely plant your new clay pot garden. Clay pot gardens look best with no soil showing. We suggest using three different layers of plants: a tall specimen plant in the middle, some mid-level colorful growth surrounding that and then plants that will trail over the edges of the clay pot garden. One of the beauties of clay pot gardening is the ability to change your palette of plants so they never tend to become overgrown. Once completed, the care and maintenance of your clay pot garden is king…or queen. For food/fertilizer, we recommend the use of Osmocote® per the labeled directions. For water, there is no need for fancy meters or gadgets. The best testing device is your finger! If the soil is cool to the touch, no water is required. If your plantings are wilting over and crying out to you… water away, just make sure not to over water! So now, off you go to enjoy the beauty and ease of your clay pot gardens. Vintage Cakes Revisited Large or small, elaborately detailed or as simple as a 1940’s war bride cake, today’s wedding cakes are taking a nod from yesteryear. Trending now are fondant masterpieces featuring a new take on “old-school” piping and 4, 5 and 6 tier buttercream “dreams,” a 1950’s norm. Adorned with fondant accoutrements — bows, banding, monograms and custom handmade, hand-painted flowers, seashells and the like — there is no right or wrong. beach safety Saige: age 2 Proud moms: Crystie Lupo and Andrea Woodson

BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach and find a trash can. Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.
