It’s a swell life! Ah…I’ve got the summertime blues. As in blue skies and turquoise water! As much as I love routines and checking off items from my daily to-do list, I relish the long, leisurely days of summer. It’s that time of year when beach parties with friends, backyard barbecues and long days of boating from sunrise to sunset occupy our time. We have an endless array of things to do here in the summer. Life in Vero is different. Here, it seems as though we’re always on vacation! We’re lucky enough to live where others vacation. This issue is dedicated to just that: relaxing and playing every day. Get outside! Head on over to the beach—but don’t forget to pack the cooler, grab a hat and wear your sunscreen! Tim Clinton grew up in Vero Beach, enjoying the river and all it had to offer. He manned his first boat at age 10 and has been on the river ever since. “Since we were kids growing up on the river, Timmy was always so talented behind the boat. Whether it was skiing, barefoot skiing, wakeboarding, or wake skating, he could do it all and was awesome at every one of them,” says Ryan Cappelen, Tim’s childhood friend. His love for wakeboarding started in high school. “A buddy took me out and I tried it, and that’s all it took,” Tim says nonchalantly. He’s a humble guy, and very talented, but not someone to throw it in your face. Tim shifted his focus to wakeboarding from 1998-2003 and committed to practicing and competing in contests. This required quite a bit of travel to Texas, California, and even Rhode Island. In 2001, he was at the top of his game and placed second at nationals in Orlando, which qualified him to compete on the world stage, and at the age of 20 he won the world championship. “The saying, ‘actions speak louder than words’ best exemplifies Tim Clinton’s accomplishments as a world champion wakeboarder. Tim’s humility after winning the national and world title is an admirable quality few athletes possess,” explains Ryan Doerr, Tim’s friend and former roommate. In 2003, Tim suffered a knee injury and took a break from competing. He moved to Fort Lauderdale and concentrated his efforts on
professional cooking, graduating from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in culinary arts. In 2006, Tim moved to Orlando and worked at the Grand Floridian at the prestigious Victoria and Albert’s restaurant. He never gave up on his love for the water and wakeboarding, and also took a job at Sea World where he would perform in a wakeboarding show and a barefoot skiing segment. Tim made his home in Orlando on a lake, with a boat in his backyard, ready for a session at a moment’s notice. He moved back to Vero Beach in 2010 and at 28 years old, he completed in the national and world championship and won. He downplays this achievement saying with a chuckle, “It was division two because I was older, so don’t mention that one.” Tim lives and works in Vero as a sous chef, and in his down time, he still loves to get out with friends to enjoy our beautiful river. He’s a true Florida boy at heart and will tell you his favorite time of year is “summertime, when our town gets a little slower and the river gets nice and warm, like bathwater…that’s the best!”

The Life of A Shell One of the greatest beach treasures is a perfectly intact whelk shell. You’ll pick it up, carry it all the way home, and find the perfect place for it. I bet you think that’s where the story of this shell ends, living happily ever after on your bookshelf. But the truth is, the story of this shell ended long before you found it. Depending on the size and type of whelk shell you found, the story could have begun up to 20 years ago. Somewhere in the great expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, a mother whelk laid an egg string containing up to 6,000 of her babies. One year plus one month later, only a few of the mollusks hatched with their shells perfectly formed, including the one that once lived in the shell sitting on your bookshelf. To gain strength, the baby whelk in your shell had to eat many of the unhatched eggs, a gruesome turn of events if you ask me, but who am I to judge something with 5,999 siblings? Your shell spent its days as the home of this one mollusk, protecting it from predators. As the whelk inside began to grow, so did your shell, with the help of the whelk. Through calcium carbonate secretions, the whelk was able to not only make its shell bigger, but it was able to repair it after any sort of damage. Together, the shell and the whelk traveled throughout the sea, living in warm coastal waters but migrating offshore to deeper water during the extremes of winter and summer. Days turned to months and months turned to years, and one day the whelk had to say goodbye to its shell to go to “whelk heaven.” This is where the story of your shell truly ends, as its purpose in nature and the cycle of life had been fulfilled. The shell gave way to the mercy of the sea and the tides pushed onto the Vero Beach shore. Then one fine day, you came along and plucked it off the beach, giving new purpose and life to the old whelk shell with a fascinating past.

TIPS FOR A SAFE & SUCCESSFUL
Lobster Season
Every year, divers from all over the nation come to Florida to try their hand at harvesting Caribbean spiny lobsters, or as the locals call them, “bugs.” The two-day mini season, July 25-26, gives thousands of families a chance to sustainably harvest their allotted amount of lobsters per person. Now here’s where it gets tricky: during the two-day mini season, each diver is allotted a bag limit of 12 lobsters per day, excluding Monroe County and Biscayne National Park. In these two areas, there’s a bag limit of six lobsters. This limit of six lobsters per day, per person corresponds with the eight month regular lobster season, August 6 through March 31. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in hefty fines and possible jail time. Lobster divers will range from first time snorkelers to scuba divers with decades of experience. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, it’s important to keep in mind a few rules to ensure your safety, and the safety of everyone who might be in the water around you. With the abundance of divers, boat traffic will spike. Be mindful of the proximity of other vessels and dive flags to prevent collisions. All vessels must maintain a 100-yard barrier from any erect dive flag, whether flying from a vessel or floating on the surface of the water. Unfortunately, many boaters are unaware of this rule and often times approach divers dangerously close. Your safest bet is to assume not every vessel will respect said boundaries. Having a member of your crew on “boat watch” will allow for smooth sailing. Checking local weather reports for wind, waves, storms and visibility before setting out gives everyone a fair chance at grabbing a few lobsters. The ocean is infamous for changing conditions on a whim; it’s best to keep an eye on your surroundings to prevent accidents.

Slow Down This Summer!
S
ummer has officially arrived on the Treasure Coast, and as the weather heats up, locals and tourists alike are looking to escape to the water. While a day spent cruising the coast is always fun, there are dangers that lurk in the water…more specifically, dangers to sea turtles. More boats on the water often leads to more hazards for our sea turtles, including boat strikes, trash consumption and habitat depletion. With sea turtle nesting season in full swing, several species can be found along the Atlantic coast during the summer months, as well as throughout the Indian River Lagoon year-round, so it’s important to think about the potential impacts that boaters can have on these endangered animals. Boat Strikes Sea turtles must rise to the surface to breathe, and while some species can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour in short bursts, this is no match for an oncoming boat. Sick and injured turtles, as well as older, larger adults are often a little slower diving down to escape. Propellers can easily slice through a turtle’s shell causing death or paralysis, while strikes from the hull can trap air in the body cavity, causing turtles to float, unable to dive down for food or escape predators.
Trash Consumption Unfortunately, boat strikes aren’t the only threats to sea turtles. The majority of sea turtles treated in turtle hospitals throughout Florida have been found with plastic in their digestive tracts. Though plastic bags are typically the main culprit, rescued sea turtles are often found with various kinds of trash inside their stomachs. As a responsible boater, leave no trace. Make sure everything that goes out with you comes back at the end of the day, including chum boxes, ice bags, food wrappers, etc.! Habitat Depletion Seagrass beds in the Indian River Lagoon provide vital nursery habitat for juvenile green sea turtles. While most of our seagrass has been diminished from algae blooms triggered by nutrient-rich runoff, the small patches that remain in the lagoon are imperative for the survival of our young green sea turtles. Boat propellers can slice through the roots that anchor the seagrass beds in place, causing the entire bed to become susceptible to erosion. To protect these valuable habitats, and juvenile green sea turtles in turn, follow channel markers, know your boat’s draft, and avoid cutting through shallow flats whenever possible. Here are a few ways you can be sea turtle-safe when boating this summer: • Keep your eyes on the water and stay alert • When boating, designate a spotter to look out for marine life • Observe and follow all slow speed or no wake signs and zones • Stay in deep-water channels whenever possible • Avoid driving over seagrass beds and shallow areas •Wear polarized sunglasses to reduce glare on the surface of the water, which will enable you to see marine animals more easily If you accidentally hit a turtle with your boat or discover an injured turtle at sea or on the beach, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 1-888-404-FWCC for further instructions.

Beach Vitex Could Be Invading a Beach Near You! Beach vitex sending out runners.
B
each vitex (Vitex rotundifolia) is an invasive plant that is widely established in the Carolinas and has invaded a small number of beaches in Florida. It’s a woody plant that sends out aggressive runners that stretch across the sand dunes. It can form dense monocultures, crowding out any other native dune plants. Its tangle of woody stems and runners can also impede sea turtle and shorebird nesting. After Hurricane Hugo destroyed much of the Carolina coast in 1989, there was a shortage of native plants available for dune restoration projects. Beach vitex was promoted as another dune stabilizing plant, but it was soon realized that it did not stabilize the dunes as well as the native plants. However, the rapid and aggressive growth of this plant made its invasive potential obvious. Beach vitex is a relatively attractive, deciduous woody shrub with silvery-green, round to oval-shaped leaves covered in tiny hairs. It produces purple flowers sprouting from the tips of the stems. It has a woody stem that only gets to about three feet tall, but it can spread horizontally 30 feet or more. It has small round fruits that change color from yellow to pink, to black as they mature. The fruit can be dispersed by floating on the water’s surface, and as a result can be spread over long distances. Recently, Hurricane Irma eroded a dune in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida that had a large population of beach vitex (and a large number of seeds). There’s concern that these seeds have now been spread by the storm and ocean currents. It’s important for people who spend time at the beach to be on the lookout for this invasive species so that any new populations can be controlled before they begin to have negative impacts on the dunes.

Florida Salt Scrubs: Distinctly Floridian
I
t all started after a weekend trip to Key West. In January 2012, Geoffrey Schmidt and his significant other, Laurie Bulman, took a weekend trip to the Florida Keys. Unbeknownst to them at the time, it would forever change the world of products authentically crafted in Florida. It was on that trip that Geoffrey was introduced to salt scrub whilst dining at a popular Key West restaurant. Saltwater is the Cure for Everything! L
ocal boating, indeed! We have a beautiful stretch of the Indian River Lagoon right in our backyard. With the Sebastian Inlet to the North and the Fort Pierce Inlet to the South, as well as scenic beaches all along the Indian River County oceanfront, our location gives us the perfect launching point for so much more. From our little seaside town, we have easy access to just about anything a boater could hope for! From fishing and cruising, to relaxing while anchored up near your own ‘private island,’ we have it all right here in our local waters. There has been much debate as to where the name Vero Beach originated, but my favorite is the Portuguese definition of the word which means warm, summer climate. While we do get a cold snap from time to time during the winter months, as boaters, we can depart from Vero to places with an even warmer, summer-like climate. In the cooler months, our access through the St. Lucie and Okeechobee Waterways get us easily to Florida’s West Coast. A scenic trip down the Intracoastal Waterway brings us to the Florida Keys with plenty of places to find a warm

sunny beach or a place to fish in some of Florida’s most pristine waters. Of course, to the north there are unpopulated stretches of waterway where Florida’s history began. All points around the Sunshine State have their special qualities that are unique and easily reached by water or in many cases by trailer. Our favorite destination is closer than most may think: the Bahamas! In the summer months when the seas are calm, the islands of Abaco are an easy reach and even closer by mileage than the Florida Keys. In Vero Beach, ‘local boating’ means so much more than it may seem. Get out on the water! Relax, refresh, reset and escape from the fast-paced world that we’ve all become accustomed to. Let’s go boating!

A Long, Hot Summer of Fishing

ummer is in its long stretch and the heat is here for a couple more months. Fish in the early morning or late afternoon for best results. Inshore, look for deeper water and shady areas along docks. Offshore, seek out mats of seaweed, floating debris, and diving birds. The snook are still spawning at the inlets. You’ll find tarpon and jacks, along with kingfish on the beaches close to shore. Offshore, there’s plenty of kingfish and Mahi-Mahi. Bonita schools will tug the line and put up a good fight, as always. Night fishing is very good this time of year, just follow the light. The good news is that the fall mullet run is not too far away. This is Capt. Christian Yergens wishing you tight lines and safe boating. Be sure to dispose of your trash and monofilament line responsibly; and please practice catch and release. For many species, this is the spawning season, so be careful.

Plastic Straws Suck The average American uses 1.6 straws per day. Collectively, that’s 500 million straws, enough to wrap around the earth 2.5 times—every day! The Return of An Old Friend
I
was born in 1961 and by 1969, I had my first guitar. I remember watching Don Kershner’s Rock Concerts on TV back in 1973. We didn’t have MTV in those days, we watched Grand Funk Railroad. I figured out Mark Farner was playing a Fender and I had to have one. A friend offered to sell me his 1965 Fender Jaguar for $500— a lot of money in 1973. So, I went to work at 12 years old. I mowed lawns, worked fairs and shoveled snow. It took me a year to save up $500. At 13, I acquired my first Fender. I loved that guitar. Unfortunately, by the time I was 15, I was smoking weed and drinking. When I was 18, my band was practicing in my basement. A friend stopped by and offered me $150 for “that old Fender Jaguar sitting in the corner.” I said, “Sure, go ahead, take it.” I thought I could buy a lot of coke and alcohol and really live it up that weekend. My parents were very loving. My mom was a drug and alcohol counselor and a strong Christian woman. She saved a lot of souls. My father worked for General Motors and was a good provider. He would work his schedule around me and my two brothers. He was our bus driver, scout leader, baseball coach and a great dad. My parents always supported our music endeavors. My drinking and partying became more important than my passion for music, and at 29, I was at the end of my rope. I had a suicide plan, but God had a different plan—He turned it around to become my greatest asset to help others. I got sober August 15, 1990 and my passion became helping others overcome addiction. I started playing music again. In 2016, I came to work for Beachside Rehab as director of community outreach. My friend who bought my 1965 Fender found me on Facebook and we became close friends. For anonymity’s sake, let’s call him “Johnny.” He’s a guitar builder and collector up in Ohio. Last year, tragedy struck and his son, 25, was killed in a car accident. Johnny began to numb himself with pills. His family asked me to do an intervention. I spent the whole day trying to convince him to get help. Finally, I got him in the car, I’m backing out of the driveway and he says, “Stop. You know that 1965 Fender Jaguar?” “Yes, Johnny, I know it well.” He said, “I’m not going to treatment unless that guitar comes home to its rightful owner.” “I can’t accept it,” I said. Johnny replied, “You will or I’m not going.” He ran into the house and grabbed it. A 1965 mint Fender Jag - priceless. We joke that God gave it to him for safe keeping. Salads to Spice Up Your Summer Mango and Strawberry Arugula Salad with Quinoa

Salads are great for a refreshing lunch, easy for entertaining and quick to whip up with whatever is in your refrigerator. Below are some twists on originals and exciting new flavor combinations. Whether you’re in the mood for a pile of crisp greens or a big bowl of pasta, there’s a salad here for you. These recipes are full of fresh farmer’s market ingredients that will keep you full while still feeling light on summer days. They are each accompanied by a dressing that you can make and keep cold in a jar for days to come. Enjoy!
Directions: -Preheat oven to 350 degrees. -Cook quinoa on the stove according to package directions. -Add pine nuts and sliced strawberries to a baking sheet. -Bake for 7-10 minutes until pine nuts are toasted. -Dress with golden raisin vinaigrette and plate.
Directions: -Bring golden raisins, water and vinegar to a simmer, stirring regularly. -Remove from heat and cover. -Add garlic, salt and lemon juice. -Transfer the mixture to a blender. -Blend until smooth while slowly adding in the olive oil. -Keeps in a jar in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.

GOLDEN RAISIN VINAIGRETTE Ingredients: -1 cup golden raisins -4 tbs apple cider vinegar -1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil -1/4 cup water -2 cloves garlic -Juice from half of a lemon -Pinch of Himalayan sea salt
Directions: -Place chicken and a pinch of sea salt into a pot and cover with water. -Bring the water to a simmer for around 15 minutes, or until fully cooked. -Using a fork, remove the chicken from the water and shred it in a bowl. -Add your desired amount of mayonnaise and buffalo sauce starting at one tablespoon each per breast. -Toss in veggies and mix. -Serve in lettuce wraps or on top of greens topped with ranch dressing. RANCH DRESSING Ingredients: -1/2 cup mayonnaise -1/4 cup milk -1/2 tsp garlic powder -1/2 tsp paprika -1 tbs lemon juice
-1/2 cup sour cream -1/2 tsp parsley -1/2 tsp dill -1/2 tsp black pepper -Pinch of Himalayan sea salt

a Caprese Pasta Salad Ingredients: -Rotini pasta -Mozzarella pearls -Genoa salami -Baby spinach -Fresh basil -Cherry tomatoes -Olive oil -Himalayan sea salt Directions: -Preheat oven to 350 degrees. -Toss tomatoes in olive oil and sea salt and place them on a baking sheet. -Bake for 15 minutes until soft. -Boil pasta according to package directions. -Strain and set aside to cool. -Chop basil and spinach and cut salami into strips. -Add all ingredients to a bowl and toss with Italian dressing. ITALIAN DRESSING Ingredients: -1/4 cup balsamic vinegar -3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil -1/2 tsp oregano -1/2 tsp parsley -1/2 tsp basil -1/2 tsp garlic powder -1 tbs grated parmesan -1/4 tsp black pepper -Pinch of Himalayan sea salt Directions: -Add ingredients to a jar and shake to incorporate. -Keeps in a jar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Directions: -Preheat oven to 400 degrees. -Strain and rinse a can of chickpeas before drying with a paper towel. -Toss in olive oil, garlic, paprika, rosemary, salt and pepper. -Spread them on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. -In a pan, heat a small amount of olive oil. -Using tongs, place prosciutto into the pan and flip after 45 seconds until crispy. -Place onto a paper towel. -Chop romaine and tomatoes and add all ingredients to your bowl. -Dress salad with lemony Caesar dressing. çaí bowls (pronounced ah-sah-EE) are the new breakfast craze trending all over the world. Many of us have indulged in the frozen treat, but what exactly is açaí? We sat down with Adri Bordoli of Chelsea’s Gourmet to find out what the hype is all about. Q: What is açaí? AB: Açaí is a fruit found in the South American rainforest. Classified as a superfood, it’s filled with antioxidants, fiber, calcium and omega-3 fats. Q: What are the health benefits specific to açaí? AB: Açaí has many health benefits, including helping to keep blood sugar levels steady, building immune support, improving cholesterol levels and keeping joints and bones healthy. Q: What’s the difference between acai and pitaya? AB: Pitaya or dragon fruit, is also a superfood grown in South America. Pitaya is filled with vitamin C, magnesium, fiber, iron and antioxidants. Its health benefits are similar to açaí, in helping to keep blood sugar levels steady, building immune support and improving cholesterol levels. However, it has also been shown to potentially lower the risk of cancer. Q: What’s the key to the perfect açaí bowl? Healing Strategies for a Happy, Healthy Summer
S
ummer is the season for relaxing and playing, being outdoors and enjoying the water, sun and sand. While typically a time of pleasure, for many, the summer season can exacerbate chronic health issues like migraines and allergies. When the temperature rises, some people find themselves down and out. Dehydration is the leading cause of summer migraines. People sweat more during outdoor summer activities which can cause a loss of the electrolyte sodium. When sodium levels get too low, headaches often develop. To decrease the risk of migraines or even worse, heat exhaustion or heat stroke, ensure adequate hydration relative to time spent in the sun and activity level. Be careful not to overhydrate as this can also cause illness. The change in weather patterns during summer can also cause increased migraines. Many migraine sufferers are sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. Summer storms are a frequent occurrence in Florida, and when the barometric pressure drops, headaches can ensue. Humidity can be a trigger for migraines, too. Interestingly, increased humidity allows for more acute detection of odors, which can indirectly result in headaches. For others, the sun can trigger a migraine. Direct exposure to ultraviolet rays and the glare of the sun hitting the eyes can induce headaches in those who are sensitive. Summer allergens like outdoor mold and weeds like ragweed also cause suffering in the summer months. Both can induce common allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose and frontal headaches. Chinese medicine can help relieve summer migraine and allergy symptoms and keep you healthy during the hottest time of the year. Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for these health issues. In many cases, acupuncture can significantly decrease the frequency, intensity and duration of migraine and allergy episodes. For chronic complaints, allow six to eight visits to evaluate your response. You can still benefit from acupuncture even if your health is good. A seasonal balancing acupuncture treatment is recommended to help align your body with the energy of summer. Chinese food therapy suggests people consume and avoid certain foods during each change of season. During summer, add the following foods
into your diet to help keep the body cool and the qi flowing: watermelon, persimmons, raspberries, dates, figs, grapes, red beets, cucumber, lemons, eggplant, black beans, brussels sprouts, summer squash, tomatoes, celery, lettuce, dandelion, spinach, dill, parsley, peppermint, basil, string beans, asparagus and radish. Try to avoid fatty, greasy, salty or warming foods like dairy, bacon, mayonnaise, potato chips, hot dogs, red meat, lamb, garlic, ginger, cinnamon and chili peppers. Additionally, it’s best to eat smaller, lighter, more frequent meals. Just as food spoils more easily in the summer heat, it may spoil more easily internally when overconsumed. Three years ago we started on a journey together with a goal and vision to open a state of the art facility where our community could come together to practice yoga and barre in a thoughtful space that offered a professional teaching staff and the boundless benefits of yoga and barre. With that shared vision 3 years ago, we opened the doors of Vero Beach Yoga Barre (VBYB) to welcoming arms. We were overwhelmed by the positive response we received and from that day it has been a constant progression. We are truly humbled by the kindness and love we experience with our community every day. Over the years, VBYB has evolved into a full service retail boutique with a dedicated space for private sessions. We have expanded to offer a wide selection of unique classes and we have added special events that provide the opportunity to connect with people worldwide. We are so thankful for where we are today, and we couldn’t have done it without you; our loyal friends and community. Our vision for who and what we are continues to grow and evolve. In that spirit, we decided it was now time to connect with our next vision. As of Monday, June 4th, we began our next chapter and VBYB will be known as LEVEL YOGA. So much of what VBYB was, will carry through to LEVEL YOGA. Ownership remains the same and you will continue to see the same familiar faces in our staff. We will continue to offer a balance of effort and ease. Though yoga will be the overarching focus of our studio, we will continue to offer barre classes frequently on our schedule. The things you love most, like our expansive schedule, clean and pristine studio, and refreshing, cool lavender towels after a hot class, are here to stay. We’ve thought long and hard about why we’re here and consistently come back to our core vision and commitment of offering a professional and welcoming atmosphere, quality classes, and making every effort to ensure you feel welcome and experience kindness the moment you walk through the door. Bringing Beautiful Smiles to Vero Beach
A
beautiful cloudless day full of Florida sunshine, a cool eastern breeze, and the gentle sound of waves breaking on the beach: this is precisely what lured dentists, Dr. Giuliana Diaz Jones and Dr. Adam Jones, to Vero Beach to raise their family. However, the story of how they settled in Vero Beach begins almost 10 years ago in Clearwater, Florida. Every year at one the state’s dental conferences, the residents from University of Florida and Nova Southeastern University present their research to the group of attendees. Adam Jones was one of these attendees who was quite impressed with one of the speakers, Giuliana Diaz. Near the end of the conference, Giuliana was hoping to sneak out of the meeting unnoticed. To her surprise, she was approached by Adam and they exchanged numbers. After dating for three years in Gainesville, they were eager to begin working and helping future patients. The biggest question was where would they establish themselves? The two differed in their backgrounds. Adam was originally from Lake Wales and Giuliana hailed from Fort Lauderdale. After searching the state from coast to coast, the two fell in love with Vero Beach. The cozy town had the best attributes that each loved, the small town feeling for Adam and the beautiful ocean scene for which Giuliana yearned. As if moving and establishing a new life and location was not enough to keep them busy, the two dentists are blessed with two beautiful children who take up most of their time when not at the office. Their eldest daughter Ana is four and their son Samuel is two. The young dentists established Vero Implant and Esthetic Dentistry in 2014. Although technically prosthodontists, a subset in dentistry which specializes in replacing missing teeth, their practice focuses on all aspects of dentistry. ere at Portfolio, we love spotlighting new people, ideas and things to do. For this issue, we had the opportunity to speak with Maxwell Muller, 23-year-old photographer, videographer and marketing specialist. Maxwell’s story begins in Vero Beach where, like most of us, he spent his time in the ocean, lagoon and in the woods. “I grew up spending every second I could outdoors. Whether it was surfing, fishing, hunting, or lobstering, my friends and I were always active,” Maxwell says. During high school, Maxwell picked up a GoPro and started making small video productions of his Vero Beach adventures, sparking a passion that would grow beyond county lines. Today, you can find Maxwell travelling frequently as he directs marketing campaigns and captures surf, culture, music and lifestyle content. “My true passion is elevating a brand image,” Maxwell explains. “Over time, I understood that productions are much larger than ‘getting a great shot’, it’s about developing and improving a brand image that people perceive as your reputation. With today’s platforms, it’s essential to have visuals that portray your brand image correctly, and lucky for me, that’s something I love to do and actually help people achieve.” Before learning his full story, we were blown away by Maxwell’s surf and ocean photography. As a Vero native, he spent his time bouncing between Sebastian and Fort Pierce Inlets, surfing everywhere in between. “Surf and ocean photography is something I’m really excited about. I grew up in the ocean and now get to experience it in a whole new way. The ocean can be very unpredictable, but I anticipate certain movements that result in truly compelling images. Sometimes it’s hard leaving the board on the beach, but I’ve had a lot of fun and success shooting stylish surfers and the beautiful ocean we live by,” Maxwell says. His surf and ocean images stand out with unique angles, artistic style and abstract-like photography. From Maxwell’s creative content to modern marketing campaigns, there’s no doubt this young man is someone you should meet before starting your next project. Stranded Naked
f you travel to Fiddle Cay in the Abacos, chances are you’ll stumble across “Stranded Naked,” a houseboat with quite the history. It all began with one man: long-time Jimmy Buffet fan, Bobb Henderson. After visiting and falling in love with Green Turtle Cay in the early 1980s, he made the decision to fulfill his dreams of living the lifestyle portrayed in Jimmy Buffet’s songs, and search for a boat of his own to take to the Bahamas and use as a place to live. After acquiring a houseboat that he named “Stranded Naked,” the adventure began. Bobb enlisted a new friend, George Cross, a diesel mechanic and Jimmy Buffet look-alike, to help him make the unpredictable journey from Fort Lauderdale to West End. Once they arrived, they met up with Bobb’s roommates, Tommy Grubbs and Andy “MoonDick” Burke. After being relentlessly grilled by the crew aboard President Ronald Reagan’s Blue Thunder “Zero Tolerance” DEA boat, drinking their weight in beer, and clearing Bahamian customs, they were off on their final excursion to Green Turtle Cay. Seven days and several repairs later, they tied up to the vessel’s new home, the Other Shore Club, but the adventure didn’t end there. Bobb and George gave up their bachelor lifestyles and gave in to the married life to start families of their own. After losing loved ones along the way, and almost being killed himself, Bobb remains in good spirits. At Bobb and Patricia’s 20th year anniversary party, the remaining Stranded Naked crew spent their time reminiscing about the good ole days and how thankful they were to be alive. More than two decades later, even after enduring wicked hurricanes and storms, “Stranded Naked” can still be found at the Other Shore Club where boatloads of good times have taken place, and countless memories have been made. It’s the site of the legendary Cheeseburger Beach Party, which provides thousands of people with free burgers and Bahamian rum punch each summer. Although no longer supported by Bobb and the Stranded Naked crew, each year the legendary Fiddle Cay Cheeseburger Beach Party continues to attract countless amounts of people, creating new friendships and unforgettable memories. Art Meets Music at One Zen Place
O
ne Zen Place is a unique concept that offers fine art and piano in a salon setting. The gallery and art/music studios provide an intimate setting for audiences to enjoy live performances of music and art simultaneously. John has been performing piano at private clubs in Vero Beach for more than 35 years and many in our community have discovered the profound depth of his musical repertoire and expertise. John and Amy have developed their respective arts throughout the years into impromptu performances that are meant to be shared with others. They have combined their arts into completely original presentations for each audience and created a distinctive venue for these performances that must be experienced in person to truly appreciate their inimitable style. A Legacy: Surrounded by the Power of Timeless Island Love
M
y family’s love for the Abacos is not a new love story. It began in the late 1950s when my grandparents and newlyweds, “Papa and Grammie,” sailed from New York to Florida to embark on their big adventure to explore the Bahamas. It was just the two of them on their 28-foot sailboat, Pavon. They had 8-10 gallons of water, some non-perishable canned food and adventurous winds billowing in their sails. After days on the open water, they made it safely to the islands. “I don’t know if we were brave or stupid, but I do know I was never once scared. I was so comfortable and confident with Papa at the helm,” Grammie explained. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Their honeymoon had turned into a year trip starting in New York and through the Bahamas, down to the Exumas. They finally found their way to a little settlement named Hope Town. At the time, Hope Town had three or four sailboats in the harbor and one generator to run electricity to the whole town. At exactly 9 p.m. every night, the generator would be turned off leaving only the raw sights and sounds of the island - the moon, stars and a few flickering kerosene lamps. The calm sounds of palms blowing in the breeze, gentle waves lapping the hull and distant ocean breakers filled the harbor. Hope Town still has its magical charm, but just imagine it back then. They weren’t looking for it, but this magical place found them. This is the Bahamas I grew up to know and love with all my heart. A year later, my grandparents made their way back to the states. They called a dock slip in Miami their home, living aboard their beloved sailboat, Pavon. Papa worked in the boatyard and Grammie worked as a secretary. Their closet was in the trunk of their car. A few years passed and they were back in the islands, but this time, Grammie was pregnant with her first child, my mom. They explored an island just south of Hope Town named Tilloo, with no sign of human existence in sight. They decided this would be the place to buy a piece of land. Grammie ended up living in the Bahamas for more than 10 years. Fast-forward to May 20, 2018 and she’s sitting front row at her first-born granddaughter’s wedding at Coconut Grove, Tilloo in the distance. There she is, feeling the same Bahamian breeze that carried her here many years ago, gazing just past the newlywed’s arbor at an ocean view that tells a much bigger story. This is just a glimpse of their adventurous love affair with the islands, and just beginning of ours. Dedicated to my Papa and Grammie. A Legacy.

A Lifelong Commitment to Animal Welfare
I
n the Florida panhandle, one woman stands out for bringing awareness and action to the plight of abused, neglected, and homeless animals in her community, the state of Florida, and the United States. Laurie Hood, founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge, is the epitome of an extraordinary animal advocate and an exceptional leader in the animal welfare community. A passionate animal lover since she was a child, Laurie established Alaqua more than 10 years ago after discovering that countless animals were being euthanized in five nearby counties, including her own, due to the lack of a no-kill shelter or adoption organization in the area. This was not acceptable to Laurie and Alaqua was practically established overnight. Today, Alaqua is northwest Florida’s premier, no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary. It has become a recognized leader in animal rescue, welfare, cruelty prevention and advocacy. A member of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, Alaqua believes that every abused, neglected, and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Committed to providing protection, shelter and care to animals in need, this private, non-profit organization offers a full-service adoption center, educational outreach and community programs that extend far beyond its geographic location. Based on its unique partnership with law enforcement, Alaqua was recently featured in the Nat Geo WILD television series, Animal PD, which followed Laurie and a sheriff ’s office investigator as they worked relentlessly to bring about change in animal cruelty cases. With Laurie at the helm, Alaqua is currently undertaking a bold endeavor to build a one-of-a-kind refuge—the first in the U.S.—on 100 donated acres. Throughout the years of healing thousands of abandoned and abused animals, Alaqua realized it could help people, too. Therefore, the new facility will also be an educational and training center to empower others to help animals and recreate Alaqua’s model worldwide. arm, summer weather is here and trips to the beach or a dip in the pool to cool off are in order. To keep your pet safe in and around the water, here are a few guidelines. Keep a good supply of cool, fresh water nearby. Rinse your dog with fresh water afterward—chlorine and saltwater can dry out his skin— and remember to dry his ears. Be careful of dead fish and fishing equipment that can injure his face and feet. Consider a life vest if your dog is young, getting on in years, or of a breed that doesn’t swim well. If your dog is new to swimming, introduce him to the water in the shallow end of a pool. Keep him on a leash and swim with him. Stay near the steps so he can gradually adjust to floating. Some dogs are not comfortable in the water so be understanding if he doesn’t take to it like a duck. At the beach, swim with your dog and monitor the waves and currents. Be especially careful of saltwater ingestion which can make him ill, and immediately give him fresh water to drink upon getting out of the water. On the boat or in the river, be careful of currents as well. Have a safety plan in case your dog falls in. Pulling a dog out of the water can be tricky, but most doggie life jackets have a handle, which is very helpful when wrangling a wet, wiggly dog. No matter the locale, a source of shade for cooling off is essential. Watch for exhaustion, and don’t overdo it. If you both feel comfortable in and around the water, you’ll be able to enjoy cooling off together all summer long. From the team at Indian River Animal Hospital, have a safe summer! What to Consider When Selecting an Insurance Agent

urn on the TV, scroll through your social media account - you will see advertisements from insurance agents who claim to be able to save you money, name your own price, or represent “all types” of insurance coverages. With so many available options to choose from, how can you make an informed decision regarding the people who will protect your home, life, health, or business?
Experience It’s important to verify an agent’s credentials, including when they were licensed by the state and the types of coverages they can legally represent. Simply having an agent’s license does not equate to qualified experience, so it’s important to identify the agent’s “niche” clientele and determine whether they have the ability to meet your specific needs. Market Access / Carrier Appointments An independent agency should be able to represent more than just a handful of insurance carriers. Open market access to multiple insurers allows the agent to “shop” your policies internally, which provides more cost and coverage options at renewal. Ask your agent to provide a list of active carrier appointments prior to obtaining insurance quotes for your home or business.
Referrals Request local client referrals, and contact each of them directly to discuss the agent’s industry knowledge, responsiveness, and customer service. Does the agent respond quickly to emails and/or voicemails? Do they provide evidence of coverage requests in a timely manner, and are they established in the local community as a reliable industry expert? Were they immediately accessible to file an insurance claim after a fire, auto accident, or hurricane. Personality Your insurance agent should not be selected because of catchy gimmicks, colorful mascots, or corporate bravado. This will be the industry professional that you will rely upon to create a unique insurance program which protects your home or business, so it’s important to maintain a level of comfort and trust at all times. An insurance agent should be more than a vendor that simply forwards premium invoices and reacts “as needed” to service requests. They should perform as your trusted advocate when claims occur, and assist with the navigation through a very complicated industry through proactive and effective communication. Joseph R. BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

VIRGO: July 1 has you in a tricky situation with someone who is getting
under your skin. It’s your mission to ignore anyone who is consuming your time and energy. You have too many big changes coming your way, due to a pair of eclipses on July 12 and 27, that you won’t have time to be worrying about people with small minds and the wrong intentions. Venus, the female love planet, is in your sign until August 6 so expect some ardent admirers. Even if everything seems to be gung ho in your private life, just be careful around August 18 as Mercury goes direct that day and it might take a few days to recalibrate.
LIBRA: Around July 11 and 12, you may get an unexpected windfall.
It could be a raise or something you’ve been waiting for. Or, just go buy a lottery ticket and see what happens! When it comes to your personal life, you may be tempted by someone who is not available. Pretend you live in a glass house, and everything will be just fine. From August 6 until early September, you are getting a double dose of the volume turned up in how you are able to charm people. You can use this time for business success, as everyone will want to work with you. Or, turn your energy to your love life and watch what kind of magic can happen.

SCORPIO: If there is anything you need to get done, do it before July
25 when things can be a little testy. You’ve been very diligent with your work projects, but remember that variety is the spice of life. All work and no play is not good for anyone. Concentrate on making sure you take at least one day off a week when you do absolutely nothing except take care of yourself. August 1 ushers in some unpredictable energy, so don’t expect everything to be smooth. Between August 7-18, you may need to readjust your plans to fit with what is, rather than what you wish things to be. By the end of August, you should be taking some much-needed vacation time. Don’t be tempted to take your work with you. Time to unplug!
SAGITTARIUS: All Sagittarians love to roam. Make sure your passport is
up to date because this summer, your section of long distance travel is highlighted in a very positive way. July 9 may find you dealing with authority figures. This could be your boss, a police officer, or an elder. Just remember that if you say very little, nothing can be held against you. July 25 has everyone on edge. Your intuition is normally spot on, so follow that. Early August continues to feel tense, so just go easy on yourself. If you haven’t taken that long distance trip by August 24, pack your suitcase and go have yourself a wonderful adventure. Seeing new places is always good for your soul.
CAPRICORN: You won’t be bored this July. The solar eclipse on July 12
will turn your focus towards a relationship that has either been fading away or losing its steam. Time for you to figure out if it’s worth hanging in there with this person. By July 27, you should have a better sense of what you need to do. If you need to find a good therapist to help sort things out, just do it. You might just need some outside perspective. August starts off with a bit of a hiccup, but don’t fret as better days ahead. Mercury goes direct on August 18 and you’ll feel like your wheels are back on track. Lovely and hedonistic energies surround you on August 25, so make the most of this time, as you certainly are ready for some relaxation.
AQUARIUS: Early July is when you want to plan a trip or start any new
project. Once Mercury goes retrograde on July 25, things will tend to go a little off kilter. On July 24, avoid getting into any conflicts. Just lay low and wait until the way is clear starting on August 6. You need to remember to play, and the aspects for fun are certainly there for you during the next five weeks. Be a bit financially cautious when the full moon arrives on August 26. If someone has been handling your finances, make sure you keep an eye on what they’re doing. You tend to entrust others with the details of your life, but it’s important you know what is going on with your hard-earned money.
PISCES: For the last few months you’ve been taking stock of what really
matters, and starting in July, you may be ditching anyone who isn’t at least useful or interesting. Right up until July 9, you are so ready for clearing out anyone and anything that no longer serves you and this means your focus will be on enjoying yourself. Don’t feel guilty about taking time off, and even better, splurging on something that brings you a lot of pleasure. This is the season for you to celebrate all that you have accomplished. There is a solar eclipse on August 11 and a full moon on August 26. Between those two dates, you’ll be thinking about making a major announcement. If it is a business decision, your news will be very well received if you do it closer to the full moon. Someone might ask you to take on a leadership role. You may not feel as if you have the time to take on one more thing, but listen to your conscience. You’ll know if you are meant to take on this extra responsibility.
