Dream I t. Do I t.
ife is short. Trust me, I know. I have been diagnosed with breast cancer twice, and now have stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. However, please do not be sad for me. I am the lucky one. I am reminded daily that life is fragile. I have always tried to live my life to its fullest and that will never change. We all take life for granted. We all think we have time. This issue is dedicated to living your best life NOW. What are we waiting for? Tomorrow? When we have more money? When we are old(er)? Pack your bags, let’s do this! I have always dreamed of living aboard a catamaran. I don’t get attached to materialistic things. I love to explore and there is so much of this great big beautiful world that I have yet to see. You don’t have to travel around the world to see great things. We live in paradise. Just pull up the anchor and let’s sail away! My dreams of sailing and living on a catamaran are at the top of my bucket list. This summer, I plan to check it off! This issue we are showcasing this dream through the life and lens of John Garza and Hannah Patten aboard Purely Blu Charters. Sailing to the Bahamas, chartering a beautiful sailboat, and living the dream. John and Hannah offer a sailing experience like no other. Their love for the sea, and the life under it, is their main mission, while providing their guests with a luxurious opportunity at the same time. Their charters offer so many things to see and do above and below the surface and they hope to inspire everyone to fall in love with the sea and those creatures that call it home. If you love something, you’ll take care of it. Let’s all be better stewards of our environment and take care of the places that we love. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as much as I do. It’s a dream today but this summer I hope to make it a reality. Dream it and do it, right? What are we waiting for?! Let’s go!
Daydreaming of sailing away,

Just another day in paradise!
W
e get spring fever this time of year. All we want to do is be outside (we know, we always want to be outside, but now more than ever!) Writing this issue really gave us the travel bug and makes us want to explore even more. What are your vacation plans? This issue will really inspire you to make those travel plans. Our ultimate dream vacation is to sail on a liveaboard catamaran. We can’t think of a better place to visit, doing just that, than the Bahamas that are just a boat ride across to some of the most pristine islands and bluest waters. Ah, take us away please! Don’t forget though, we also live where everyone else vacations. Jump on your boat, grab your surfboard, pack a picnic, or go for a hike, the opportunities are seriously endless. The weather this time of year in Florida is fabulous. We are planning to do a bit of nighttime stargazing in the near future. It’s the perfect time to be outside day or night.
Dreaming of vacationing,
Penny, Reilly, and Alyssa

Meet Your Captain: John Garza
John grew up in the shark bite capital of the world, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Growing up, he fished for the same sharks he now calls his friends. John has a very different view on sharks now. One fact remains, sharks are at the top of the ocean food chain, and the more that can be revealed about the masters of the sea, the more that can be done for their conservation. It wasn’t until years later, after moving to Hawaii, that John was introduced to diving and the world of sharks. This is when he found his deep love for what lies beneath the sea. He went from killing to protecting the sea life he finds solace in. He realized that if he combined his love for sharks, conservation, and photography, he could make a huge impact on our oceans and marine life. John is a self-taught photographer and showcased his images on Instagram where he quickly made a name for himself, and became well-known and respected in the industry. John's photography has graced the covers of many national publications, advertisements, and eco-advocacy campaigns, including the new Fear to Fascination exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium, which features John's favorite tiger shark. As an avid free diver, scuba diver, and professional photographer, he strives to educate people about the environments of our oceans through creative outlets and stunning imagery.
The Crew: Hannah Patten
Hannah originally built her name as an equestrian, competing all over the world. She is now making waves in the fashion industry. A found again love for the ocean pushed her to start an eco-friendly swimwear line with the help of her friends. Hannah started Hülya Swim with the dream of making an impact on the oceans around us. Hülya is Turkish for daydream, so it is safe to say that her determination has helped her dream become a reality. Her innovative company removes massive amounts of harmful pollution from our oceans, while at the same time generating an effective conservation-oriented business model in the often-wasteful world of high fashion. Hannah wanted Hülya Swim to be for people like her: the explorer, the lover, the sophisticated, the confident, and the bold. She will always prefer saltwater, sand, and adventures which guide her through her journey as a young entrepreneur in and out of the ocean. The pair set off to Mexico, fell in love, and ran whale shark expeditions all summer long. They created the ultimate whale shark experience and shared not only their new romance but their combined love for the marine life and the ocean. As time went on, the request for expeditions grew and they were presented with the opportunity to partner in a 50-foot Lagoon Catamaran, which is now Purely Blu Charters. Hannah, as the head stewardess, and John, as the captain. Without hesitation, the pair jumped into this new venture and took off to the Bahamas with their golden retriever, Coral, in tow.

One of our favorite spots to run expeditions that we haven’t been able to get back to due to COVID is Tonga. Tonga is a unique landscape that humpbacks travel to every year to give birth. Here, you have a mum and her young calf. Look closer and you can see a diver at the surface which shows you the size difference between man and being.

K.C. Scott
Local Artist Captures More Than Big Fish
L
ocal resident and artist, K.C. Scott has spent his entire life engulfed in his passions. He’s one of those guys that tells you stories of when he was a kid, winning golf tournaments in Michigan (where he grew up) and then follows up with a story about jumping tarpon under the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys. His father fueled his passion for sports and the outdoors, and his mother pushed his creative side through his art. It was the perfect combination that led him to South Florida and Barry University where he competed on a golf scholarship and graduated with a business degre. With a goal of making a living playing golf, he spent the next five years on multiple professional golf circuits and a quick week on the PGA tour. With the dream of playing on the PGA Tour out of reach, and by sheer luck in 2008, K.C. rekindled his passion for painting. The end of one career fueled the beginning of another. He quickly refined his skills with the paintbrush, pulled images from his memory bank and let the paint fly. Within two years, his art was gracing some of the world’s most famous fishing magazines and the shelves of one of the country’s largest outdoor retailers. 32
March-April 2022
K.C. quickly found that the demand for his art was more than just flat wall art. The apparel business offered another avenue to share his work. He dabbled on a small scale with his own signature line until 2014, when he joined forces with the HUK brand. Fast forward eight years later, and you can find K.C.’s images decorating HUK products from head to toe at most outdoor retailers across the U.S. and Canada. K.C. now resides in Vero Beach where you can find him at his home studio or the KScott Company headquarters in West Palm. If not he’s not there, he's either chasing his young family, in the water trying to capture references for his next art inspiration, or on a surfboard catching some waves. After 14 years, his art resumé achievements are endless, and the demand for his work continues to grow faster than he can paint. To see more of K.C.’s art, visit KScottArt.com or follow him on @kscottart. Written by Trevor Brown Photography by Jon Coudriet

I
t was Christmas morning. My two boys finished tearing open presents, socks cast aside; my oldest was eager to take his new drone for its maiden flight. “Make sure you understand how to fly…” My husband’s wisdom was futile. I sipped my coffee, flipped another snowman pancake, then peeked out the window, savoring the peaceful moment. My two boys marched along the beach flying the drone. I was unaware of the actual drama taking place. The drone was flying but inexperience had flown it out too far over the water. Further and further, it went until it fell, yes… it sank into the waves! I comforted my son wondering how to take away that feeling of loss; no, Amazon couldn’t help today. I caressed his arm and recalled a story we were reading, about a colonial girl growing up in New Zealand during the 1800’s. I gently said, “Remember Florence Young? She was making a grueling trip home from town when the horses pulled her family's wagon into the river. The horses drown and the wagon sank, along with all the newly purchased supplies and her birthday gift, a brand-new slate. That must have been a hard day for Florence. I bet you know a little of how she felt, don’t

you Isaiah?” I’ll never forget the look on his face. He did know. Without a word the “comparison” said it all. That story changed my son's Christmas. Reading living books is an integral part of learning for us. When I was new to homeschooling, I happened upon a book, Read for The Heart, by Sarah Clarkson. Clarkson guided me into the world of classic and modern literature. One favorite is The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Grahame’s charming story of human-like animals is cleverly written; all be it with an advanced vocabulary… even I stumble over words like “infelicitous.” We all belly laugh as the reprehensible Mr. Toad gets into more mischief. “Keep reading Mom,” my boys say. Books like Grahame’s certainly encourage a strong vocabulary. Any unfamiliar words are printed and posted for us to practice throughout the week. The next time my boys get into a fight they can say, “Your actions are reprehensible!” It’s important to note the difference between reading living books. I read an article about the founder of Good and the Beautiful publishing company, Jenny Phillips. She discovered her daughter’s rude behavior was influenced by the books her daughter was reading. Phillips’ discovery encouraged her to publish virtuous classic children’s books, some long since out of print. Thanks to resources like Good and the Beautiful, along with similar publishers such as Lamplighters Publishing and many others, our children can read living books that “inspire something noble in the heart of the reader.” Written and photography by Olivia Assaf

Designing an Outdoor Oasis
E
ven though spring in Florida isn’t quite as exciting as it is in the frozen north, thinking about spring home design projects is still pretty thrilling—at least to an interior designer! We all have home projects that we’ve been aiming to do throughout the year, and now is a great time to get to work! One thing to consider at this time of year is your outdoor spaces! Yes, I am an “interior” designer, but being a designer in Florida means understanding that many of us see our outdoor spaces as a seamless extension of our home’s interior, since we’re fortunate enough to have weather that allows us to spend time outdoors year-round. Examine how your outdoor spaces are working for you. Do you have enough seating to comfortably entertain, if you are inclined to do so? Do you need better storage solutions for outdoor toys or gardening supplies? Is there something else: a cracked patio floor, unappealing landscaping, or anything that might be keeping you from enjoying your outdoor spaces as much as you would like? Consider what your ideal vision of that space would include, and then work backwards, figuring out what you might need to add or subtract to make that a reality. 46

Don’t fret if you’re working with a small space. Even a small balcony that can only fit a few chairs can become a pleasant, relaxing environment with colors, textures, and features you enjoy. If you’re overwhelmed by choices, think about the functionality of your space first. I recommend focusing first on adequate, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing seating so the whole family can enjoy the space at the same time. If you’re ready to go big, there’s two things that keep people inside in Florida: bugs and oppressive heat. There are innumerable solutions to both those quandaries these days at a variety of price points. Overall, think about how you’d like this space to function for you and your unique household. If you’re overwhelmed, an interior designer can help you plan out a space that can be both functional and beautiful! Spring Gardening
It’s in the Details
A
s spring arrives and you undertake spring cleaning, include your garden as one of your projects. Gardens need thorough attention so plants, flowers, and grass are healthy, and the investment of time will have you outside before the heat of summer. To be successful, pay attention to these ten details. First, if you are a do-it-your-self gardener, check your equipment. Sharpen your mower blades, your pruner blades, and tune up your equipment. Get ready for growing season. Second, clean your beds of old mulch and leaf debris. This will allow for fertilizer and new mulch. Clean beds allow air to flow under plants, reducing disease. Third, change out the flowers that are not looking good. Consider putting summer plantings, such as caladiums or pentas, in flower beds. These will survive in the heat and provide color well into the summer. Fourth, introduce new plants. Spring is a great time to plant. Consider a flowering shrub,

such as a gardenia, to add tropical smells and beautiful flowers. Native plants such as firebush will also do well being planted in the spring. Fifth, fertilize turf and shrubs before June 1st, when the Indian River County summer fertilizer ban goes into effect. Spring fertilization will stimulate healthy growth as the warm, wet summer season arrives. Sixth, mulch your beds. This will keep soil moist and reduce weeds. Seventh, develop your pruning and trimming plan. Almost every shrub in the garden needs pruning and trimming to look its best. Make plans to trim and prune after the last flowers bloom and before the hottest days of summer. Eighth, look up! Your trees need attention in the spring. Remove seed pods on ornamental palms or in areas where the seeds will stain patios and decks. Look closely at oak trees and considering trimming deadwood for safety reasons and pruning them for new growth. Leave the trimming of sabal palms for another year; they do not need annual trimming. Ninth, check your bed lines. Each year, planting beds grow wider due to edging. These lines should be crisp, straight, and evenly spaced between the shrubs and sod. Spring is the time to add sod if needed and tighten those bed lines. Tenth, check your irrigation. Even though the summer is the wet season, there are many stretches of no rain and summer temperatures soar, quickly evaporating any moisture. Look at your irrigation timer and do a test run through all your zones, checking for proper coverage and possible breaks. Spring on the Treasure Coast is filled with colorful flowers and brilliant greening, but it is also the last chance to get ready for the long, hot summer months. Take advantage of the milder days and detail your garden so you can enjoy it to its fullest extent. Written by Peter Benedict Photography by Eileen Escarda

The Bahamas
Florida’s Next-Door Neighbor
T
he Bahamas is an amazing archipelago within proximity to the Florida coast. Formerly a British colony, it is a tropical wonderland consisting of 700 islands and 2,400 cays of gin clear waters to throw a cast into. If variety is the spice of life, this photo can serve as reminder to our local contented anglers reminding that a richly rewarding change of pace is nearby and worth the trip. The Bahamas is a natural playground for those who love the sea and sand. There are many activities to do, but one of my favorites is to fish for bonefish in the flats. The Bahamas is synonymous with bonefish; it ranks among one of the top bone fishing destinations in the entire world. It is not at all unusual to walk a flat and encounter hundreds of bonefish schooled up in inches of water, with no one else in sight. The sheer size of the Bahamas can be overwhelming and the opportunity to target bonefish is virtually endless. Fly fishing for bonefish in the Bahamas is entirely unmatched, especially when it comes to accessibility and value.

Pick your destination. People typically travel to Acklins Island, Andros, Crooked Island, Grand Bahama, or Long Island, with the Abacos being a particular local family-favorite choice. If you are a new potential enthusiast, be certain to engage the service of a professional guide, someone familiar with the regions many fishing haunts. The Bahamas is known to be the fly-fishing mecca for decades and for a good reason. Thousands of bonefish call these flats home. Its tropical climate, fun-loving people, and laid-back pace continues to draw traveling anglers from around the globe. Fly fishing for bonefish exemplifies sustainable, environmentally respectful angling at its best and is the most rewarding. Palm Warbler
What Is That Little Brown Bird?
W
hat is that little brown bird you ask yourself as it flits across your lawn, or high into the canopy of a tree, along the golf course fairways, a fence or even lanai screen. Well, with over 150 different ‘Wood-Warbler’ type species that could be identified in North America, we would have to narrow that down a little bit for our southeastern region. It is really amazing to think in North America alone there are respectfully over 950 bird species that would either live year-round or be in migration. Warblers are known for being songbirds as each and every one of them do have a beautiful characteristic song they would sing at different times of the day. Where most the time, a bird might only ‘chirp’ as it forages on insects in trees, gardens, lawns, woodlands and marsh habitats, but never discount them eating mother nature’s fresh fruit as a resource, too. Most of these Warbler's average in size of 10 grams or 0.35 ounces, which would be equal to 2.5 cubes of sugar. Now back to that little brown bird that has hints of yellow along its tail region, where it gets its nickname ‘butterbutt’. I know many of us like to nickname something we find, but this cute little characteristic is true to the species and if said in a crowd of birders ‘what bird is identified as a butterbutt’, well chances are very likely you will be told it is a Palm Warbler, Setophaga palmarum. Yes, this cute little bird is always on the move, hopping or flying around looking for insects to eat, which is its primary diet. It is not very picky of what type of insect, just food that is reasonable in size to 56

consume. Their primary time to visit the southeastern zones is September through April, which is during their winter migration. Some very common identification markers for this bird would be its primary feather colors, which are brown, then the back lower portion where the tail feathers intersect the body is where the yellow feathers are located. Remember, in the birding world, females have more pale colors than the more prolifically colored males. The males will have pronounced yellow feathering at the throat and top section around the eyes. The males also have a very pronounced rust color on the top cap, whereas the females will just have brownish feathering on the top cap. Common on both male and females is a darker brown stripe that runs from the bill to just behind the eyes. One of the easiest identifying traits if it is a Palm Warbler: watch its tail! If the tail is constantly bobbing, you are spot on. You have just found yourself a Palm Warbler, as they are the only one in their family that will have this constant flicking activity. To learn a bit more about these birds, never hesitate in looking them up on Cornell’s website at AllAboutBirds.org, which is a fabulous digital resource. There are many books that can also help guide you to your mystery bird and apps for your mobile devices, too. North Atlantic right whales in Canadian waters during the fall.
Plight of the Right Whale
Volunteer Spotter Program
I
n December of 2019, a female North Atlantic right whale, nicknamed Snow Cone, lost her first calf to not one, but two separate ship strikes while traveling north along the coast from Florida. With fewer than 350 of these whales left on the planet, the loss was devastating. She’s since given birth to a new calf, though her journey hasn’t been easy. Considered one of the most endangered animals on the planet, right whales have been listed on the Endangered Species Act since 1970. Historically, they were threatened due to whaling. In fact, the right whale got its name because it was the right whale to hunt—it moved slowly and would float after being killed. Now, their primary threats come from vessel strikes and entanglement with fishing gear, which is exactly what happened to Snow Cone when pregnant with her second calf. During the winter months, females migrate to give birth in warmer waters off the coast of Georgia and Florida down to about Cape Canaveral. As the only known calving grounds, these waters have been designated as right whale critical habitat by NOAA Fisheries. They travel north starting in the spring to their feeding grounds and mating grounds in waters off New England and further north into Canadian waters. Snow Cone was spotted again in March of 2021 off Plymouth Harbor, Massachusetts—entangled in fishing gear. Entanglement is a problem because the ropes can wrap around their flippers, head and mouth, and cut into their flesh and lead to infection. It can hinder the whales’ ability to swim and eat, leading to starvation or slow death. If they do get free, they could be too exhausted reproduce. 60
March-April 2022
Fortunately, a trained rescue team was able to remove more than 300 feet of line before Snow Cone dove and disappeared. In December, she was spotted by an aerial survey team with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Georgia with a new calf. “The fact that she was able to give birth so soon after losing a calf, and while entangled is amazing news for her and the species,” said Julie Albert, coordinator for the North Atlantic Right Whale Conservation Program of the Marine Resource Council (MRC) based in Palm Bay. If people are interested in helping right whales, the MRC has a volunteer spotter program to report sightings and help track the whales’ movement and behavior patterns, said Julie. However, it’s important to remember these are an endangered species protected under both the Marine Mammal Protect Act and Endangered Species Act. “It’s illegal to approach these whales closer than 500 yards and that includes drones,” she said. For reference, that’s about five football fields. If you see an entangled whale, she added, do not try to approach and remove any line yourself. “You could cause more damage to the whale or get seriously hurt.” As of early 2022, Snow Cone still has some line wrapped around her, but with a new calf, it’s not safe to remove the line. The fate of the mom and calf remains uncertain. If you see (or think you see) a right whale Report Sightings Toll-Free to 1-888-97-WHALE (1-888-979-4253). Across the Pond
Destination: Fuschl, Austria
H
ello again! Greetings from the crystal, clear Lake Fuschl near Salzburg, Austria. This area is world famous for its part in the musical, The Sound of Music. This beautiful area of Austria is a pristine and enchanted Alpine water world and was perfect for my first story about our “Across the Pond” travel destinations. Are you wondering why this was my first place along this journey? It’s because this mesmerizing lake and surrounding area was a favorite place of my late husband when we visited my home country of Austria. The emerald-green Lake Fuschl is located to the east of Salzburg and is part of the Salzkammergut. The region around the lake is picturesque and dotted with century old farmhouses and a castle. In this province of mountain lakes, Lake Fuschl is the clearest and cleanest lakes of them all. In fact, it has drinking water quality! The lake flows via the Fuschler Stream into another nearby crystal, clear glacier lake and then over two smaller streams into the Danube. The history surrounding this area dates back to the 14th century. The castle on one end of the lake was used as a hunting lodge during the reign of the Archbishops of Salzburg. Lake Fuschl was also known as the “court’s kitchen” back then. This meant that the complete catch from the lake landed on the Archbishops table. This impressive castle was built in the 1400s and majestically overlooks the translucent body of water that was carved out of the Alpine mountains millions of years ago. Today, the fortress is a luxury hotel owned by the Marriott hotels. The activities around the lake are endless. In the summer, you can hike extensively and lose yourself in the surrounding forest, rent old wooden boats to cross the lake, jump in the clear lake and swim to the other end if you so desire, race mountain bikes, or just relax and be present in your beautiful surroundings. In the winter, you can take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh through the white winter landscape, go skiing on the nearby mountains, take a cross-country tour, or again just be present and take in the views. To top things off, one can visit numerous cultural events like classic concerts and theater performances in Salzburg. For the foodie travelers, enjoy eating in five-star restaurants or old country pubs that serve homemade specialties from the area. All this is paired with excellent wines from the region. Today, the newest addition to Lake Fuschl is Red Bull World Headquarters, located at one end of this beautiful glacier lake. Old world, combined with the modern buildings, are surrounded by its own lake and decorated with huge bronze bull statues. This impressive complex brings the modern era to this dreamy historical lake. Nevertheless, it does not disrupt or disturb the “enchanted feel” of the cleanest and clearest lake in all of Austria. It is certainly worth a trip! Sea you soon! ~ Nadja Written and photography provided by Nadja Ricci

Researcher Reveals Two Species of Octopus Share Living Space
F
rom land, the Blue Heron Bridge in Riviera Beach, Florida, appears no different than any other bridge. Lurking beneath the surface is a world filled with exotic sea life, like seahorses, sponges, and octopuses. “It’s one of the most renowned spots for scuba diving in South Florida, if not the country,” said marine biologist Chelsea Bennice, Ph.D., who has recently discovered how two species of octopus coexist under this bridge, sometimes within just a few feet on one another. While coexistence has been studied in many species, it’s rarely been studied in cephalopods, a group of animals that includes octopuses, squids and cuttlefishes, said Bennice, an affiliate assistant scientist in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and assistant director of FAU’s ASCEND programs (Advance STEM-Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery), in the FAU Stiles-Nicolson Brain Institute on the John D. MacArthur campus in Jupiter, Florida. Bennice and collaborators conducted the first long-term study to uncover how two species, Octopus vulgaris (common octopus) and Macrotritopus defilippi (Atlantic longarm octopus), occupy the same space by feeding on different prey items and at different times. 62
March-April 2022
For this research, recently published in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, she examined the octopuses' feeding behavior, diet, and when they were active or inactive. Throughout the three-year study, she accrued more than 371 dive hours, sometimes following a single octopus for three hours to watch it eat. She also deployed a remote 24-hour underwater camera. “Before this study, little was known about the Atlantic longarm octopus, a shallow water species that I’ve found in just three feet of water,” Bennice said. Results showed that the common octopus is primarily active at night, and ate shellfish like oysters, clams, and scallops. They also preferred a harder seafloor, like rocks and rubble. The Atlantic longarm octopus is active during the day, preferred a sandy bottom and exclusively ate crustaceans, such as crabs and shrimps. The longarm’s diet surprised Bennice, adding, “I had no idea the Atlantic longarm octopus was such a specialist—eating primarily crabs.” Additionally, eating at different times reduces interference competition for the two species, she said. “Our study also illustrates that both visual and tactile cues play a role during octopus’ foraging and feeding,” said Bennice, adding suckers on their arms touch and taste the environment as they look for food, and then they’ll blindly seize prey with their arms. “The behavioral ecology of octopuses is important for understanding the role these animals play in community structure and biodiversity of an ecosystem.” Written by Bethany Augliere Photography by Harbor Branch

Since the inception of FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, our scientific researchers have dedicated their efforts to intimately understanding the function of fragile ecosystems along the coast and in the ocean. They examine environmental responses to pressures like coastal land development, nutrient and plastics pollution, ocean acidification, warming temperatures and overfishing. Study results are essential for policy makers as they develop sound conservation, management and restoration strategies.

A Treasured Landfall
T
he sun was rising behind us as we entered Fort Pierce Inlet. The flood tide hurling us in past all the outbound boaters on a sparkling December Saturday. Moving fast and checking our bearings with each other as the buoys raced by, we missed the text from Tim’s sister, Monica Jennings: “Look left!” She and her husband, Charlie, were perched on the breakwater watching Billy Pilgrim arrive. Having left their house in the Moorings well before dawn, they’d scrambled out the jetty to greet us. For our part, we had bought our 1988 Passport 40 sloop in Fort Pierce at the end of 2017, and so this landfall represented several different homecomings at once. We’d been underway for one day and two nights out of Cumberland Island, Georgia. More broadly, we’d been underway for three months, having left Gloucester, Massachusetts, in September. We passed through many landscapes on our way down the coast. We rode the peculiarities of tide through the Cape Cod Canal. We sailed past the craggy entrance to Narragansett Bay for a lovely visit to Newport, Rhode Island. We navigated under the many bridges of New York’s East River, bidding Lady Liberty a

sweet bon jour and au revoir. From the waves of the Atlantic, we spied Bruce Springsteen’s celebrated Jersey boardwalks. We sailed up past vast container ships through Delaware Bay to the gentle Chesapeake, where we took a few weeks in Annapolis to tend to boat and work. Life on Billy Pilgrim is a departure in many ways from our life on land. There’s no lawn to mow, but no last-minute calls for takeout dinner, either. There is always something to fix or maintain, but the view is incredible and always changing. Cell service comes and goes—mostly goes—but there is lots of quiet, not the endless chatter of televisions and computers and other things that beep and buzz. After Annapolis we headed to Norfolk, Virginia, and Mile Zero on the Intracoastal Waterway. We found ourselves in the company of many other boats migrating south through the shallow rivers, canals, and sounds that make up this watery version of I-95. Rather than signs for South of the Border and fast-food restaurants, we passed through peoples’ backyards, or quietly traversed swamplands and cypress forests. We saw half a dozen bald eagles. We dodged floating logs. After Beaufort, North Carolina, we rejoined the Atlantic and headed to Charleston, with all of its complicated history and genteel charm. Eventually, we moved on to Savannah, where we picked up a friend for a delightful Thanksgiving exploration of the Georgia Sea Islands—roast chicken in our gimballed oven! We rode bicycles around Saint Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Simons and Jekyll Island. We stumbled on to the grave of Bessie Jones, of the Georgia Sea Islands Singers, who performed at the Newport Folk Festival and a presidential inauguration. We clambered over tree-sized driftwood on the beach of Saint Catherine’s Island and communed with the wild horses and armadillos of Cumberland Island. All those lovely and interesting places behind us, we slipped through the Fort Pierce Inlet and anchored off of South Causeway Park Beach. Monica and Charlie appeared on the shore with warm donuts and coffee from the Fort Pierce farmer’s market. We tidied up the boat, refreshed ourselves with a quick dunk in the crystalline waters before heading off in the dinghy through the mangrove-lined waters to Little Jim for fish dip, shrimp tacos, and cold beers. Our warm reception was only amplified the following day when Monica and Charlie and friends joined us at Fort Pierce City Marina to travel with us; the final leg to the Moorings—ICW Mile 957! —and the Jennings’ backyard dock. They brought Goombay Smash, champagne, and delicious things to eat, but mostly the party they brought with them came in the form of their generous welcome and enthusiasm about our adventure. Comfortable that Billy Pilgrim was snugly tied up behind Monica and Charlie’s house, we flew up north for the holidays with our children. Tim’s niece, Isabel, checked on the boat’s well-being each day and provided photodocumentation so we wouldn’t worry. We returned to Vero after the New Year, Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
to tidy up some unfinished projects (on a boat there are always unfinished projects), before setting off again. Tim and Monica grew up in New Orleans, and Monica honors that heritage enthusiastically celebrating Mardi Gras season by baking a wide variety of King Cakes. So, we spent January upgrading the boat during the day, and in the evening improved our personal “ballast” with Monica’s culinary creations. We enjoyed a great deal of time discussing our next ports of call. Everyone we met in Vero added suggestions to our list of unmissable places to see, things to do, or treats to eat. Monica outfitted us with an extensive kit of her favorite items of snorkeling gear. We have been very well cared for in the peaceful environs of Vero Beach, but now it’s time to cast off our lines. From here, we’ll be heading south to Miami, then crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas, and gently sailing our way southeast along the Lucayan Archipelago to Turks and Caicos. Eventually, we’ll head back to New England to sail those waters when the weather there allows it. In the meantime, among the spares and provisions we store aboard Billy Pilgrim, we’ll now carry warm and sweet memories from our time in Vero Beach, such a restorative place to catch our breath. Seasonal Allergies
Natural Relief for Common Symptoms
A
ll hail to the lovely yellow dust that appears during this time of year coating your car, patio furniture and anything else you leave outside for too long! This golden glow is the hallmark of oak pollen season which is in full force from February thru April, although the oaks have begun pollinating as early as January. Pollen count is measured on a 12 point scale divided into quintiles based on severity. The highest pollen count is the range from 9.7-12 which carries the recommendation to stay indoors if you suffer from allergies. Locally, the only time we reach this high level of pollen is during oak pollen season. Seasonal allergy sufferers often have heightened symptoms during these months and can feel miserable. The most common allergy symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, itchy, watery and/or puffy eyes and throat irritation. Headache, fatigue, cough and exacerbation of underlying conditions like asthma or sinus issues are also possible. While tempting to open the windows during the beautiful weather, pollen will be the tagalong guest of the spring breeze. The western medicine approach to relieving allergy symptoms consists of a broad range of options from mild over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants and corticosteroid nasal sprays to leukotriene inhibitors, allergy shots and biologic medications which suppress the immune system. Although these treatments are effective for many, some may cause unpleasant or even dangerous side effects. For example, the leukotriene inhibitor, Singulair, carries the warning of increased risk of serious mood and behavior changes and has been reported to cause anxiety, depression, nightmares and even suicidal thoughts or action. For those who prefer a natural approach to health care, there are drug-free solutions for seasonal allergies which have proven to be beneficial. • Nasal irrigation: neti pot, bulb syringe, or squeeze bottle with saline rinse to flush out nasal passages has been shown to reduce allergy symptoms when performed three times daily for 3-6 weeks. • Nasal sprays: XClear with xylitol or Similasan • Quercetin: 500-1000mg daily-flavanoid that has anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine and mast-cell stabilizing properties. • Butterbur: 500mg daily- one study demonstrated this herb to be as effective as Zyrtec.
• Stinging nettle: 600mg daily-has been used to treat allergic rhinitis • Rosmarinic acid: supports healthy histamine response • Acupuncture: effective in treating allergy and sinus symptoms. Specialized techniques by qualified practitioners can help reduce or eliminate environmental allergen triggers. Many of our patients who used to feel badly during this time of year now make it through oak pollen season without suffering. Our practitioners have successfully treated the allergies of many children and adults utilizing a multifaceted approach including acupuncture or acupressure, natural allergy desensitization techniques and the most appropriate supplement or herbs to improve the patient’s condition. Please note this article is not intended to give medical advice and you should consult a knowledgeable practitioner before beginning any supplements to ensure they will not interfere with your prescription medications. The Gift of Community
I
recently read an article that spoke so much truth about our need for connection. As humans, we are meant to learn from each other, be with each other, and grow with each other. The past years have been hard with this because it is in the daily communication, the daily encounters, the conversations and so much that we find resonance, we spark new ideas, we share common hurdles and successes, and are able to find our common thread. There has been a spike with us resorting to the screens, the endless scrolling, the isolation in such a “connected” world. The truth is, more than ever, I am observing that real connection is something we are all craving. We are hungry for connectedness, for feeling part of something, for sharing and giving. This is very much being human. We are not meant to live in an alternate world. We are meant to live well and be out, enjoying nature, breathing deeply, finding, and keeping our people. Yes, if the past years have taught us anything, it is that community is at the base of our wellness, of our souls being filled and emptied, of experiencing life at its fullest and that maybe at one point, this was necessary to help us realize how much we were taking that for granted. There are great things to be said of spending time in solitude, no doubt. But community is where we create, we imagine, we exchange, and we thrive. Finding like-minded souls not only ignites our soul but helps us realize that community is also the opportunity to have that other in which we can

rely on when things go left. I was at a yoga class recently and the key was stuck in the studio’s door. Soon the entrance was packed with all of us who were seeking to have that hour of movement, peace, calm or whatever else we were seeking to experience. As a group, we united and everyone took a stab at trying to open the door. We were all determined to make that class happen. Along came a guy who was able to unclench the key and was able to open the door. I know this might sound like another uneventful moment, but for us that were there, that had been looking forward to yoga that afternoon, it meant the world. As we all gathered our stuff and set up for class, the teacher thanked him. He mentioned, “I was not going to not do yoga tonight and neither were you.” We all applauded like this massive thing had happened, and it did. These are the little miracles that happen in community and that we have to watch for. The things that make us come together, connect us and that something that tells us: oh, look we are all human, we’ve got this, and we will be okay. Through My Lens
Capturing the Language of Love
I
have always been creatively inclined. Painting. Drawing. Crafting. So, when Instagram came out in 2010, and as phone cameras evolved, suddenly, photography for a broke college student became possible. Let me tell you, in the beginning, I was not very good. My grid was saturated with Dutch angles and over-edited photos! Since then, though my technique has improved, the inspiration has always been the same. People, environment, light… I am obsessed with how these elements interact with each other. It’s a dance; sometimes practiced, sometimes messy, always beautiful. My job is to see it, capture it, and I love that. So why weddings? Good question. Well, let’s be honest, as far as photography goes, weddings allow me to make a living off doing something I enjoy. With anything in life, there has to be a balance and the work has to be level with the reward. My first wedding was the toughest thing I had ever done. My feet felt like they were going to fall off and juggling families during photos almost brought me to tears. When I got home from that first shoot, I remember seeing my now husband sitting on the stairs waiting for me. I dragged myself out of
the car like a rag doll and when he asked me how it went, I simply replied with a smile, and said “really well.” Despite everything, I still loved it. That was it. In that moment, I knew I wanted to go for it with everything I had and I did. Now, my husband and I capture weddings together, and I am infatuated with it. There’s nothing like constantly capturing love through your lens to help you value the little beats of life. Sometimes, scanning over a sea of people interacting with my lens there's a bride dancing like she is truly free… a cousin letting loose for the first time in a long time… the drunk uncle really getting down… then something familiar… my husband, enjoying all of it just like I am. I think this is it. I am happy and I want every person looking back on their photos to feel the same rhythm of euphoria that we feel… If you would like to reach out to us and join our dance, you can find us on the web at EzerPhoto.com, on @ezer_photos or email us at ezerkenegdo.design@gmail.com. osephine and Nancy believed in each other. Their superpower is surrounding themselves with a like-minded tribe who builds each other up, supports each other, and who truly love their craft of making people feel beautiful. Meet Nancy. She was born and raised in Florida. Nancy comes from a family of hairdressers. Her mom, like Josephine, now own their own businesses after a long career in the industry and have both established their dreams that they always envisioned. Both of these strong women are a tremendous inspiration to Nancy. At an early age, Nancy was her mother’s assistant. Nancy’s mom started her cosmetology career when she was a stay-at-home mom. She would offer her clients services in their home. As a child, Nancy would hand her mom perm rods while she worked. Nancy loved the art of hair for as long as she can remember. Nancy’s cosmetology career started 10 years ago working beachside right here in Vero Beach. When she

first began her career, she interned as an assistant for many successful and talented hairdressers, and one of them happened to be, Josephine. Nancy trained under Jo for many, many years and learned so much from her mentor and close friend. Together, they both had a strong passion for doing hair and making their clients feel beautiful. Throughout the years, they supported each other, built a special bond and a deep friendship. Nancy learned so much on the beauty of hair. She strives to always surround herself with strong, uplifting, dedicated and hard-working women that make their dreams a reality. Today, these two women, still work side by side at the new luxurious beachside salon, Avanti, owned by Josephine. To book your next hair services, call Nancy at (772) 231-3771. Living Your Best Life

njoying life now and in the future depends on what you want to do, when you want to do it, and having the resources to do it with. You can be in control of that. The ability to enjoy all that life has to offer can come from good health, inner peace, but also financial peace. Even if you are years away from let’s say retirement, good decisions today can add multitudes to how you enjoy those years and what you have to work with. Do you feel confident enough today about financial management, to take care of needs now and plan future dreams? Or do you need help from a seasoned expert? Whether you are in the wealth building stage, planning for children’s education, or retiring soon, creating a well-defined plan now often involves receiving expert advice. A financial advisor can provide insights on how to save and invest to meet your goals. Finding a qualified financial advisor doesn’t have to be hard. Referrals from others may be convenient but may not always produce the desired results or the feeling that someone has your best interest at heart. At Client 1st Advisory Group, we believe in partnership to achieve your best life. We strive to understand your background, philosophy, needs, desires, and objectives to work with you and for you. As fiduciaries, our services are always structured to be impartial and always in your best interest.
