life well said

this is us

Good Vibrations Vero is home to many different kinds of car owners and CARS. At any moment, while cruising A1A or down Ocean Drive, you might pass a Rolls, Bentley, Ferrari or...even a really cool old car like this 1940s Woody Wagon owned by Gavin and Marcia Ruotolo. Gavin and I met a few years back when I started volunteering and helping out with the Moorings Wheels & Keels Exotic Car and Boat Show. Gavin is always wonderful when we need to shoot something and offers us the use of one of his many (MANY) cars. Marcia, his beautiful wife, should get the “Wife of the Universe” award, as she also supports Gavin’s love of cars. Read on, and you’ll learn more about Anthony D’Elia’s obsession with sleek and fast cars or Tom Lockwood’s warehouse eclectic collection, which includes a 1950s Jeep Willy. If I had to pick new vs. old, hands down I would choose old any day. I really love original, classic cars. There’s something about an old car that you just can’t get in a brand new car. Vintage cars have personality, charm and character. New cars just lack the extras—like a clutch, uber cool hood ornaments, wooden steering wheels or chrome. I grew up driving a five-speed manual transmission. Today, even if you request a “stick” it definitely is not like the original clutch from back in the day. As for my ultimate favorite classic car? Without a doubt, it would be an old Porsche. Maybe one day, I’ll actually get one (a girl can dream right?) From the 914s to the 356s, the 60s and early 70s models still make me stop and drool. It was so fun shooting this issue. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about our local grown-up “boys” and their exotic, fast and classic toys. Cruise on my friends,

Cruisin’ into summer in this 1940 Ford Deluxe Station Wagon owned by Gavin and Marcia Ruotolo. This rare beauty has all original woodwork, interior and vinyl. Under the hood is an 85-horsepower original Ford flathead. Cruising through town on the way to the shoot was so fun and this old Woody attracted many admirers. Special thanks to Gavin and Marcia for allowing us to use their toys in this issue of Portfolio!

Good Old Boys & Classic Toys Written by QUINN HIAASEN Photography by EMILY CLINTON

Since their genesis, cars have not only been a symbol of human industry, but also timeless relics that preserve some of the most memorable moments in our country’s history. From antique to contemporary, every car claims its own place in the evolution and success of our most sophisticated technologies. Many have taken the matter of preservation into their own hands, by seeking out some of the rarest and most sought-after automobiles, as they slowly go extinct. Others prefer to be on the forefront of the technological revolution, investing in top-of-the-line vehicles that push the boundaries of what is capable on the racetrack. Whichever it might be, this issue explores the various sides of car collecting, unearthing the different perspectives of people who are searching for their perfect next ride, whether it be from the 1920s or the 2000s.

Gavin Ruotolo: The Car Curator

An Affinity for Automobiles

G

avin Ruotolo is the type who, on any gorgeous Florida day, may drive as many as three different cars before the sun begins to set. You see, Gavin doesn’t collect cars to simply own them. He prefers to actively go out and enjoy them. The former real estate developer and general contractor has called Vero Beach home for more than 30 years. However, car collecting has been in his heart since he was a teenager. Luckily Marcia, his wife of 53 years, enjoys collecting cars as much as he does. A side bonus to their journey happens to be the incredible people they’ve met along the way. “Our friends talk about cars the same way young people talk about their kids. It’s an instant bond!” Gavin says. “Marcia and I love that we have met so many great people through our passion for cars.” That affection towards automobiles has resulted in a collection of more than 30 cars. At 79 years young, Gavin still attends car auctions about four to five times a year, but mainly for the entertainment. “At this point, I have to really love a car to buy a new one.” What significance do your cars have to you? Do they hold deep meaning or is it just for fun?

GR: I am passionate about cars. I love presenting vehicles. To me, they are rolling works of art. It’s also about the people you meet in this industry. I’d like to pay tribute to my dear 22

friend Robert Carnevele who passed away recently. Robert’s favorite car was a 1955 T Bird and he is greatly missed by his wife Judy and all of their friends. What traits do you look for when purchasing a car to add to your collection?

GR: I prefer the low production, one-of-a-kind type of car. About three or four years ago, I bought a Westland 1958. I was pretty proud of that one. I also have a 2013 Viper. There are only 150 of those built in the U.S. I tend to go after the rare and special cars. Tell us how you began collecting cars? Was it a childhood passion or something that developed as you grew older?

GR: Well, I fell in love with cars at the age of 14. I started out racing stock cars. Back then, the 50s were a great time because people were creative and you could really customize a car. I had this 1949 Mercury that I turned into a four-door hard top. It was great! What was the first car that you bought as part of your collection?

GR: A 1932 Ford Roadster. It was quite the car. I remember bringing it home to show my dad, he thought it was fantastic. I was only 16 but I took that car and fixed it up. Then went drag racing with it. Would you say that collecting cars is a hobby for you or more of a lifestyle?

GR: You know, there was a time when collecting cars was pushed to the side. I was working five to six days a week and just didn’t have the time for it. However, once I retired, I picked it back up again. It’s always been a fun aspect of my life. As I’ve gotten older and more successful, I’ve been able to add to my collection. What is your dream car as a collector?

GR: I always like to say, “Whichever one I am driving at the moment.” How many cars do you own and where do you store them?

GR: I own 30+ cars. Half of them are kept in Maine and the other half are here in Florida. Have you ever been pulled over in one of your cars?

GR: Yes! Most recently, my wife and I were out driving a yellow 1937 Cord convertible. Our friends were behind us driving in a 1950 Studebaker convertible. All of a sudden, a sheriff ’s deputy is next to us, pulling me over. It’s only 8:30 in the morning. He comes out and starts asking me all kinds of questions about my car. Then he asks about my friend’s car! Quite the show stoppers! Do you plan on continuing to collect cars? Will you keep the cars in the long term?

GR: I’ll tell you what, it has been such an important part of our life. We have truly enjoyed it. It’s a phenomenal hobby. Anthony D’Elia: The Horseman Work Hard, Play Hard

A

nthony D’Elia’s fascination with cars goes beyond that of a particular era or look. For him, the allure is deeply rooted into the how and why. How have cars improved over time? Why does a certain engine work the way it does? One aspect he marvels at is how technology has turbocharged the industry. “I am particularly fond of fluid shapes and burbling gasoline powered engines” Anthony explains. “I can envision a Tron like NASCAR future where electric cars are propelled silently in a blur around an oval track.” Cars for Anthony are the ultimate favorite pastime. He loves European cars for their precision, fit and finish. He loves American cars for their brutish muscle and rawness. “In any shape or form, I love cars and look forward to the next one I buy like a little boy on Christmas Eve.”

What significance do your cars have to you? Do they hold deep meaning or is it just for fun?

AD: For me, my cars have been my reward for hard work. They are a mechanical metaphor for work hard, play hard. 28

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Were cars a childhood passion of yours?

AD: Growing up, I read Road and Track, Motor Trend, all of the car magazines. I especially loved the stats pages in the back. 0-60, 0-100, 0-100-0 (the famous Cobra benchmark). I wondered how they could continue to improve the performance. Would cars continue to be quicker, faster? I was always intrigued by the physics behind the mechanics. So in a way, it wasn’t just the exterior form but rather the way in which the cars were constructed that fascinated you?

AD: Yes. For example, more horsepower usually came with more weight due to a larger and heavier motor. What were the mathematical principals that applied to overcome the weight? I wished my grammar school math classes were taught in horsepower and quarter mile times vs. fractions and metrics. And did your interest in cars continue to grow as you got older?

AD: Definitely. Interestingly, during my career as a designer in New York and Los May-June 2019

29

Angeles, my firm redesigned, designed and/or launched nearly every major car magazine in the country. It’s very cool when you can make a career out of your passion. What is your dream car as a collector?

AD: I love cars and I love my cars, but have never really fallen in love with a particular car. I have never found my rosebud. Maybe I’m still searching for her. What is your favorite car you already own?

AD: I’m not in love with any particular car. I didn’t grow up dreaming of owning a specific car (Corvette, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari). However, I have owned all of them. Like Plato’s Theory of Forms, I love the essence of the car, in all its shapes and brands. As a collector living in Florida, has your location changed your tendency to prefer one style of car over another?

AD: Having moved to Florida full-time 10 years ago, I found myself drawn more to the trackoriented cars (Ferrari Scuderia, Porsche GT3RS, and my new addition, a Shelby GT350). They’re purposeful and I can exploit their unique and powerful characteristics on a number of great racetracks in our backyard. Where do you like to race?

AD: From Homestead to historic Sebring, Sundays are fun days. We wake up early, grab our coffee and caravan across the state to the track. It’s fast and fun, and it beats fishing!

Tom Lockwood: The Machinist

A Patient Buyer and Collector

W

hen considering a new purchase to add to his car collection, Tom Lockwood tends to favor one particular factor over the rest: condition. “I used to restore cars myself. And I liked that process. But now, as I have gotten older, I’m in the camp of purchasing a car that is done. I simply want to enjoy it.” Tom owns a wide range of cars from a variety of eras. He has cars from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. A self-described patient buyer, he feels grateful that so many opportunities come to him. “People know I’m a collector, so the offers tend to come my way.” Over time, that patience has paid off as he has grown and upgraded his collection. What significance do your cars have to you? Do they hold deep meaning or is it just for fun?

34

May-June 2019

TL: Really, it is all of the above. In a way, cars are a lot like people. They have individual characteristics. I don’t find myself dedicated to one particular style or type. How did you begin collecting? Was it a childhood passion or something that developed as you grew older?

TL: As a youngster, I started out in stock car racing, followed by drag racing. I could either go pro or divest myself of the activity. So I started collecting. What was the first car that you bought as part of your collection?

TL: I bought my first car when I was in my 20s. It was a 1944 black convertible with a white top and black and white interior. It was a street rod, which means the outside had the look of the 40s but a modified engine.

TL: For me, certainly a major motivator in collecting cars is the enjoyment.

Has collecting cars become a lifestyle? Is it more than just a hobby?

What do you look for in your next car? Speed, style, historical significance?

TL: For the most part it has been a side hobby. I spent my career working in real estate and was fortunate to know enough about cars that Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

I could make educated purchases on the side and grow my collection. What is your dream car as a collector?

TL: I don’t really have a dream car per say. I like to think cars are like your own children, no favorites. I like them all equally! How many cars do you own and where do you store them?

TL: I currently own 19 cars. I keep them in different warehouses around town. In the future, I may have to reduce my inventory a bit. It’s a lot of maintenance and they don’t like to be idle. Have you ever been pulled over in one of your cars?

TL: Yes, in fact several times! Thankfully it was because the officer was either a collector himself or wanted to learn more about whichever car I happened to be driving. But upon being pulled over, my initial thought is always, “Did I do something wrong?” Do you ever plan on stopping?

TL: Collecting cars has brought an incredible amount of joy to my life. I’ve been able to show cars at shows, travel all over the country and meet a wide variety of interesting people.

Emily Clinton’s Passion for Photography Runs Deep

A

lways an artist at heart, Emily Clinton discovered her true passion of photography in a high school darkroom class. She was born and raised in Florida and grew up in Vero Beach, then went on to major in creative photography at the University of Florida with a minor in art history. Emily loves to let her subjects speak to her and allow the image to form from this connection. She believes in capturing pure human moments that people want to look at time and time again. Emily is extremely excited to be a part of Portfolio and expanding her photographic experiences! As a Florida native, Emily thrives in the stunning beauty of our tiny slice of heaven. She specializes in weddings, maternity, family, and styled photography. “For me, photography is all about capturing a moment that speaks to us as humans. I love to connect in the moment, find a pleasurable and unique way to utilize light or angles in order to bring interest in my photographs,” Emily says. “Often times, I find myself laying on the ground, getting up on a step (I’m 5’1” after all), or framing in a distinct way to capture the image I visualize in my head. In the end, I will be covered in sand, grass and sweat, but it’s all worth it.” It has been one year since Emily left a steady paycheck and immersed herself in photography full time. “It has truly been the best decision of my life. My passion for photography runs deep. This passion continues today in my small business, Ella J Photography, LLC, and has grown through my work with Portfolio Magazine,” Emily explains. “I thrive in environments where I can be creative with others, especially those who can bring me up as an artist, and give a new perspective.” EllaJPhoto.com,

or many fisherman in our area, the only water they’ve known is the brackish flats of the Indian River Lagoon, or the pounding waves of the summer Tarpon run that occurs off of our beaches. While both of these provide some of the most beautiful fishing opportunities that Florida has to offer, the freshwater domain can often be completely overlooked by saltwater enthusiasts. The larger Vero area is not only home to the Indian River, but also countless stick marshes, Everglades-esque freshwater sanctuaries home to some of the biggest largemouth bass in our state. Only accessible by airboat, these marshes extend for miles; seemingly endless rivers of grass that remain pristine and silent year-round - a vastly different experience than casting through umbrellas on the beach or dodging massive yacht wakes in the lagoon. The most trusted professional fishing charter in these marshes is Haulin Bass, a company run by Captain Mike Arnoldy. He began guiding in Texas, before moving to Melbourne in 2010 and continuing his guiding career locally. In addition to being an excellent guide (already pulling in several bass over 10 lbs this season), Arnoldy is a Coast Guard Master, ensuring not only a fun, but safe trip on the water. His company is fully insured and promises an exciting day of fishing in some of the most beautiful backcountry the Sunshine State offers. Learn more at HaulinBassGuide.com.

life explored

onfusion runs rampant at age 19. If you meet one of us who appears to have it together, they are a spectacular liar. I can tell you from several months of being in this condition that it is, actually, really, insane. All of us are soul-searching, trying to find ourselves, life’s purpose, a career, happiness; it’s truly a disorienting time to be alive. Several months ago, I found myself in a very strange spot. After being spoon-fed an identity for years in high school, I went to college and quickly discovered that everything I knew about myself was largely false. I had been blissfully lying to myself for a very long time about who I was and what made me happy, and it showed. And after leaving school, I ended up back home, but this time with a clean slate, and an open mind. As weird as it was to leave the person I used to be behind, it created the space necessary to start making true headway in the direction of what I actually wanted to do with my life. It was a blessing in disguise; the time away from academics has given me the chance to explore my true passions like music and visual art, and more importantly, a chance to do things that I never imagined I would have done before. One of these adventures that seemed rather far-fetched was a road trip across the entire country. At first, the idea seemed just like an amazing adventure with my girlfriend (and that, it was), but I didn’t anticipate learning so much about myself, and life as a whole, from two weeks on the road. At first, the planning seemed overwhelming: camping destinations, food supplies, fuel, and weather seemed impossible to keep track of. Slowly, however, the pieces came together, and that crazy idea that we had was quickly becoming a reality. It became clear as the planning went on, that we were going to have to relinquish control of virtually everything. Every aspect of this trip was unpredictable, and after a certain period of time, that thought stopped making me anxious, and only brought me peace and excitement. Maybe this feeling was what the gypsy lifestyle was all about, and maybe, it was exactly what was missing in my life. What followed was the most incredible experience of my life, with an incredible person. Tossing expectations to the wind, we left Florida and began the two-week trip to San Francisco, letting life lead the way. Follow us on this great adventure, and let the journey begin.

Florida’s Incredible Freshwater Springs

T

o many, Florida is known for its theme parks and sandy beaches. Yet, tucked away in secluded woods and wetlands, the sunshine state is home to another treasure—crystal clear freshwater springs. These springs supply Floridians with 90 percent of their drinking water, support healthy ecosystems for wildlife, and provide recreational opportunities like snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving. Unfortunately, they face numerous challenges because of human activity. About 900 freshwater springs are scattered throughout state, including the world’s largest and deepest, Wakulla Springs. Most are found in the north and north-central regions. It’s possible Florida has the highest concentration of springs in the world due to the state’s unique geology and climate. Florida’s ground sits atop a porous limestone rock layer. When rain falls to the ground, it is slightly acidic and seeps into the underground limestone, and over the course millions of years it dissolves into the limestone to create water-filled caverns and tunnels. Pressure causes the water to bubble up from the aquifer to the Earth’s surface, resulting in a spring. North Florida has more springs because the aquifer is closer to the surface. One of the most iconic visitors of the springs is the sea cow, or manatee. The springs vary from 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, so these marine mammals venture into the springs during the winter months to rest, warm up, and take a break from the colder ocean temperatures. It’s not uncommon for swimmers to encounter these gentle giants. During the winter months, however, it’s particularly important that manatees get the undisturbed rest they need, especially nursing mothers with calves. Some notable places, like Three Sisters Spring in Crystal River and Blue Springs State Park, shut down their swimming areas to the public to protect the resting mammals. This past January, 558 manatees took refuge in the state park during a cold day. Despite their pristine appearance, the springs face threats. Pollution from fertilizers, pesticides, septic tank leakages and agricultural waste lead to algal blooms that choke out native vegetation. Withdrawals from the aquifer for human consumption impact how much water flows from the spring. Protecting the health of Florida’s springs is necessary to support thriving ecosystems, but also to ensure a clean supply of drinking water for Floridians.

Help Us Turn the Tide Become a Vero Hero

A

ll around the world, people are waking up to the fact that plastic is a problem. The land cannot absorb it, our seas cannot swallow it and we cannot digest it. The detritus that is washed up on our beaches every day is a visual testament. The good news is that awareness of the problem is growing. And awareness leads to action. Here in Vero Beach, Coastal Connections will be launching the Vero goes Zero campaign in July to encourage reduction of the use of plastic straws and plastic bags. Whether you are a business or an individual, you can join us by saying “no thanks” to disposable plastic items. Every time you do, you will be helping spread the message that our planet will be a better place with less plastic. Saying “no thank you” to plastic is vital, because recycling is not the answer. Unlike glass and paper, plastic is difficult to recycle, and Indian River County asks that plastic bags and plastic straws are not put into recycling bins as they harm recycling equipment. We will provide more details of this campaign in the next edition of Portfolio. In the meantime, if you would like to know more about how you could help us turn the plastic tide, email laurahazell@btinternet. com or visit Coastal-Connections.org.

Save Our Indian River Lagoon

T

he fishing this spring was pretty darn good! The warmer temperature allowed for some great days on the river and the beaches. I’d like to take this time before the rainy summer season is upon us to bring awareness to the excess water that is dumped into our river during these months. As many of us know, and for those of you who don’t, there’s an extreme amount of freshwater that is poured into our river from inland areas that causes the water to turn very tannic and uninviting. There needs to be discussion about allowing more saltwater to flow from the ocean via a natural inlet, or some kind of irrigation to connect the two bodies of water. With the Bethel Creek raw sewage spill that went highly unpublicized, future accidents like this would not be so alarming because there would be proper flushing of this stagnant body of water. We should be more involved as a community in an effort to keep this wonderful and majestic body of water in better condition before it’s too late. Please read, learn, and get informed about the health of our estuary—it’s one of the primary reasons many of us live, work and play in Vero Beach.

kids who share a huge passion for the game. This summer, members of the club will travel to Europe to take in FIFA Women’s World Cup. The most difficult aspect Foster faced when trying to fulfill his vision came down to selling the philosophy he knows in his heart to be true. “Convincing people that winning isn’t everything wasn’t easy. But I stuck to this sentiment. I believe in it. We want to create great people, produce college-type players, and develop outstanding individuals. All of this could not have been possible without the generous contribution and support of Anthony and Megan D’Elia.” It’s worth noting, Massive Premier just graduated 13 athletes who will play college soccer this fall. It sure does seem like the crew in Palm City are doing something pretty darn special.

ports, by definition, are very simple. There’s a winner and a loser. Sure, the margin in which one team beats another may be slim. And yes, occasionally a game may end in a tie. However, the goal is always the same, beat the opponent and emerge a victor. What if winning was as equally important as the character of the individual player? Can an athlete still have success when they value the journey as much as the result? About eight years ago, Fraser Foster came to America on a mission. After spending his entire youth training and playing soccer, he was hired by the British Premier League to come to Florida. “I originally came here to do some research with the hopes of helping to build an overseas program. Instead, I saw so many opportunities.” Fraser’s vision resulted in Massive Premier Academy, a soccer program with a dual emphasis. “We use soccer as a vehicle to teach lessons for life. We believe that through the sport of soccer, we can engage kids to grow to become great people.” Currently, there are 200+ kids, consisting of boys and girls, from ages 4 to seniors in high school, enrolled in the program. The innovative curriculum, backed by a staff of 12, is curated to all ages and various levels. With more than 20 years of coaching expertise, respectively, the private training facility also features both a strength and leadership coach as well as a personal chef. “The life span of a pro is so short. We want both the kids and the parents to buy into the mentality that this process isn’t just about the sport. Winning is important of course, but so too is the development as a person,” says Foster. One way in which they emphasize this belief is through overseas travel. Students recently took a trip to Panama to give back and help less fortunate

Garden. Yard. What’s In a Name?

A

t Aiello Landscape, we see every yard and landscape project as a garden. Gardens are one of the oldest embodiments of beauty in nature. They express a form of civility and an individual’s taste. They are places of pride, providing a serene oasis from noise and commotion. The plants, lawns, and flowers that surround our homes and businesses break up the rough edges of sidewalks and streets. They cool the air around them, provide shade, and give us a place to be barefoot or let the dog play. For 25 years, Aiello Landscape has focused on creating and maintaining beautiful garden surroundings for homes and businesses. Our mission is to provide exceptional service and the highest quality garden experience. Founder Tommy Aiello, who received a lawnmower for Easter when he was 6, and partner, Dan Crisafulli, who brought the gardening concept to Vero, have created an unapparelled model of service, quality, and professionalism. Aiello’s trained and uniformed crews spend hours attending to detail at clients’ homes, hand pulling weeds, hand pruning bushes, and pushing, not riding, mowers. The result is an impeccable, carefree landscape that draws one outdoors. The concept has been a success. Aiello Landscape maintains nearly 200 gardens, installs new landscaping, hardscaping, artificial turf and relocates trees. We have a department to design and maintain potted plants and flowers in containers. Recently, we opened the Aiello Garden Boutique at The Hazel House where you can purchase containers, orchids, succulents, and other plants while getting ideas on how plants can enhance your interior and outdoor living spaces. We welcome the opportunity to create a stress-free landscape for your home, where you can spend your time focused on enjoying yourself and entertaining family, friends, and of course, your pets.

Make Fitness a Lifestyle Change, Not a Punishment

Neuro-Emotional Technique

I

A Stress Management Tool That Really Works

’ve got a personal question for you: How is that New Year’s resolution going? Remember a few months ago when you promised to renew your vow to fitness? Still at it? If the answer is no, listen up, because I’m guessing that while you did try, you went about it the wrong way. You dove in head first. You attacked the newest workout fad and diet plan. And then came the fast burnout. That wasn’t part of the plan. See, this is where everyone goes wrong, where the resolution fails. Stop following the latest gimmick to lose weight. Being healthy and getting into good shape is as realistic as the plan you start. However, it sure doesn’t have to be life or death. With the easy access of the Internet, we can find ourselves overwhelmed with an abundance of health and workout knowledge. Stop and think if that approach really dials you in? How can you figure out what works for you? Here’s a plan of attack to start a fitness lifestyle change, not a lifestyle punishment. • Set monthly goals. Month-to-month goals are attainable. We can all be disciplined for at least a month.

A

s a family medicine physician, I’ve always known about the intricate connections between stress in the mind and in the body. I have seen firsthand how stress affects the health of my patients. Many of us have specific vulnerable areas where we hold stress: tightness in neck and shoulders, a sensitive stomach, a tendency towards headaches or an injury that persists or is associated with more pain or dysfunction than expected. Normally the body can process stress and heal itself, but when we are especially vulnerable, recovering from illness, or experiencing loss or trauma, the body can get overwhelmed. A technique used in our office called Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) uses muscle response testing to quickly identify where in the body stress is being held, what the source of stress is and what emotion is correlated using tenets of neuroscience and Chinese medicine. During this process, the patient visualizes a stressful event and connects with the associated unpleasant feelings from that situation. While doing so, the patient contacts acupressure points on the wrist and forehead and takes slow deep breaths. Patients report a shift in their body when the stress is released, resulting in a decrease of both physical and emotional symptoms. A February 2017 study published in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship described the effects of NET on brain physiology in cancer patients with traumatic stress symptoms. The study demonstrated that NET can significantly reduce a patient’s subjective experience of emotional distress, but more interestingly, reactivity in the areas of the brain associated with fear and stress were significantly decreased on functional MRI scans following NET treatment. This shows not only that stress has a physical presence in our body, but that it can be effectively resolved with this relatively simple technique using acupressure, posture, breath and visualization. Neuro-Emotional Technique can be used to treat emotional responses to past trauma or negative life events so memories no longer evoke strong or painful physical reactions. NET is not a type of psychotherapy, rather, it is a physiological technique. NET changes the physiology of the body, removing

obstacles to healing as if they were stuck emotional thorns. It is used to treat a variety of physical ailments as well as help in cases where stress is stopping someone from making a positive life change. NET was recently featured on the April 18th episode of the Prime Time television show Grey’s Anatomy on ABC. A character used this technique to quickly discover that the reason he runs away from experiencing joy is because of a trauma he went through decades prior. It is truly amazing to see the effects of stress reversed in my patients. I recommend utilizing techniques like NET, meditation, qi gong and acupuncture to maximize your health and quality of life so stress doesn’t hinder your body’s natural ability to heal.

Common Myths About Mouth Maintenance

W

ith spring coming to an end and summer fast approaching, many of us have plans to enjoy a vacation. Many will be driving for those summer vacations. We’ll go through the common maintenance required for our vehicles: oil change, transmission fluid exchange, break pad wear, etc. What about the maintenance of our mouth? For this installment, I hope to clarify some of the most common myths I hear in our office from patients.

Myth #1: Sugar will rot your teeth. Although we’ve all heard this common tale, its simply not true that sugar rots your teeth. However, all mouths have bacteria which live on our teeth. When we eat sugar and carbohydrates, the bacteria feeds on these sugars. Finally, the byproduct of the bacteria eating those sugars is acid. It’s acid that ultimately breaks down tooth structure and forms cavities. Myth #2: Brushing harder will get your teeth cleaner. This is definitely not true. As strong as tooth enamel is, it can still be damaged by overly vigorous brushing or being brushed with a hard-bristled toothbrush.

Your teeth aren’t the only things at risk when you brush too hard—your gum line is also affected and may start to recede. When you’re brushing your teeth, instead of “scrubbing,” think “massaging.” It may also help if you switch to a toothbrush with soft or extra-soft bristles. Myth #3: I just need to have my teeth cleaned every six months. While technically this is true for the most of the population, there is still a large amount of the population who may need to visit the hygienist every three or four months. What determines this is the condition of their gum tissue and bone that supports their teeth. Of course, they should follow the recommendations of their oral health provider.

Soaring with the Eagles

D

id you know that Vero Beach is the home of the fastest growing Soaring Club in the nation? The Treasure Coast Soaring Club Inc. (a 501C3) is located in a large hangar at the New Hibiscus Field on 98th Avenue just west of the Vero Beach Outlets. The club was conceived in December 2016 by two Vero Beach residents: Bob Gaerttner, a retired GE executive and jet engine designer, and Bob Youngblood, an accomplished glider pilot, who started flying in Miami in 1975. The two Bob’s sent out emails to other soaring enthusiasts and 18 people showed up for the first meeting. This brought Randy Opat into the fold: a commercial aviation Captain who is licensed to fly Gulfstream jets, jet helicopters, sea planes and perhaps most importantly (along with Bob Youngblood) fly the tow plane that gets the gliders up in the air where they can either glide and come down to earth or ride the thermals and soar. And soar they do, attracting enthusiasts from all over Florida as well as internationally. A Swedish family that searched the internet found the gliderport and decided Vero Beach would be their vacation destination. It attracted Al Ricks, 89, of Grand Harbor, a former naval aviator who was looking for something different to do. He heard about the club and has chalked up 117 hours flying every Saturday and Sunday for the past year. He has been told that he is the oldest Navy Aviator still flying with a commercial license. One of the club’s missions is the youth program. Kids have a chance to solo while learning about aviation, discipline, camaraderie and good decision making: training that will last a lifetime. American icons Neil Armstrong and Captain “Sully” Sullenberger are pilots who benefited from their early glider training. On any given day there are at least 16 sailplanes tied down on the field, plus the Yellow Gorilla tow plane ready to roll down the 3,200’ strip and up into the wild blue yonder. There’s action in the hangar as club members study their charts and others buff and fix their sailplanes and equipment. Another important part of the club is the camaraderie. There are fellow members ready to help you with that wing that isn’t quite right. Or to assist you in loading your sailplane in the 30 foot custom trailer that allows you to take it on the road.

Eileen Youngblood (nickname Skyleen) is said to be the most intuitive at finding thermals soaring effortlessly for hours longer than anyone else in the club. Visitors are welcome and there always seems to be someone with a warm smile ready to give a tour and tell you why soaring is the best; it’s raw flying without all the noise and vibrations. Jewelry Inspired by Life

LABELS Designer Resale

G

abrielle Egan’s aesthetic was informed by her childhood experiences and her love of the natural world. As an only child, Gabrielle went everywhere with her parents. Both artists, they shared their love of art, music, history and architecture with her. Gabrielle attended more gallery openings and museums than she can remember. Along with that wonderful cultural education, she was also inspired by her idyllic childhood growing up on Cape Cod. Summers were spent exploring Martha’s Vineyard and being moved by the natural landscape. To this day, Gabrielle is happiest when walking on the beach with her family and looking for seaglass and other treasures that wash up on the shore. From an early age, Gabrielle knew she wanted to do something that would allow her to channel all of her talents and creativity into something she could share with others. When she was pregnant with her first son, she started making jewelry. Her first foray into seeing if it would be a viable business opportunity was the annual Hibiscus Festival in Vero Beach. She procured a table and hoped people liked her creations. She soon realized that she was on to something. She sold almost everything she made and the positive feedback was overwhelming. Gabrielle started selling her jewelry designs locally and had the occasional trunk show, all which were very well received. However, it wasn’t until Gabrielle and her family moved to Asheville, North Carolina, that her hobby became an actual business. When she and her family moved to Charleston, South Carolina, she opened her flagship Peyton William store downtown on the famed King Street shopping district in 2013. Then in 2015, she was approached to expand her business and asked to join the boutiques at Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island. With this amazing success came more opportunities. In 2016, Gabrielle opened a pop-up boutique in the newly renovated Village Shops in Indian River Shores. This was also very well received and Gabrielle’s following and loyal fans continued to grow. Then in 2017, she and her family decided to move to Vero Beach and relocate the pop-up store to Vero’s main shopping district. She opened her third Peyton William store on the corner of Ocean Drive and Beachland Boulevard. She opened her fourth store in the fall of 2018 in Sewall’s Point and is looking to open more stores in Tampa and Naples in late 2019 and early 2020. With all of this success, Gabrielle’s quiet time is very precious. With two active teenage boys, she tries to balance her career with family time. On her days off, she loves to be at the beach or on the boat surrounded by her family and making memories that she truly cherishes. Anyone who has met Gabrielle knows that not only does she have unbridled energy, but is also extremely curious. Gabrielle loves food and cooking and in her spare time dreams of opening a restaurant and sharing her love of delicious meals with all of her friends and family. For now, she’s committed to designing beautiful jewelry for her loyal clients who are always in search of that new piece that Gabrielle designed from all of her many life experiences and the inspiration that surrounds her. here’s something romantic than soft brush strokes and hazy color washes. Watercolor captures the feeling of its subject in a dreamy, imperfect way. It lends itself to a certain unique, one-of-a-kind quality that’s hard to find with other mediums. It’s showing up everywhere, from logo design and product packaging to wallpaper patterns and textiles for the home. Lucky for us, it is also taking over the wedding stationery scene in a big way. The handmade vibe that’s inherent of watercolor with it’s beautiful sheer color gradients are prettying up all sorts of paper goods from party invites to thank you cards. One of the reasons the trend is so popular is because it’s incredibly versatile. You can use a subtle watercolor effect as an accent in a design or create a more elaborate pattern for a background that has a real “wow” factor. After all, an invitation is the first glimpse guests will get of what you have planned for them at your special event. At Watercolor Design Studio, we design beautiful hand-painted special event stationery. Our custom wedding invitation suites can be anything you dream up. Have a beloved pet you want to feature on a details card? Done. How about a unique monogram crest filled with all of your favorite things? Absolutely. Notecards and art prints for the home are available on our website as well. The work in our studio is not mass produced, we design, hand-paint and personally handle every detail of your order from the first conversation to the final product. High-quality paper, packaging, and printing methods are used to ensure that your invitations and paper goods have that luxurious custom look and feel.

Why Hire an Interior Designer?

I

Written by CHRISTINA BRUCE

66

May-June 2019

’m finding it more and more difficult for clients to understand the value of hiring an interior designer. I’d like to give you some insight into some of the benefits of hiring, as well as what to look for when selecting a designer. In order to not have this be the world’s most self-promoting article, I’m also going to provide insight into our pricing strategies. Let’s break down the mystery behind pricing strategy of designers. Each designer has their own way of pricing their services and goods. When it comes to their design services, which typically covers the selection of all design items such as furnishings, lighting, interior finishes, space planning and cabinetry design, designers will either charge an hourly fee or an overall design fee. An hourly fee will cover their time to select and present the selections they’ve made for your project. A design fee will be a lump sum, typically based on a dollar amount per square foot, that will cover all of their time to make their selections. I know it can be confusing for a consumer to decide which type of pricing is more advantageous. Here’s a little secret: it typically doesn’t matter. When I first started my company back in 2009, I’d painstakingly analyze which type of pricing strategy to use. I’d keep track of all my design hours when charging a design fee and at the end of the project analyze which was more profitable. It almost always came out nearly even. The choice of hourly vs. design fee typically comes down to one of two things for the designer; the scope of the project and the designer’s own overhead costs. For example, when working on a smaller residential project, a designer would likely select an hourly rate. This gives them the ability to cover the expense of their time on a less profitable project. Designers that have a larger overhead with more employees or a furniture showroom will often prefer a design fee because it’s an easier way for them to forecast the income for their company, as the amount is set during the beginning phase of the project. In the end, the most import thing is that the cost for design services is a fair amount given the designer’s level of expertise. When it comes to the dollar amount a designer charges, this should be solely based on their credentials. In this world of HGTV, Pinterest and Houzz, it seems everyone with good taste believes they’re a designer. While there are lots of different roads one can take to become a designer, it ultimately comes down to education.

Many designers obtain a degree from a school with an accredited interior design program. I have a bachelor’s of fine arts from Savannah College of Art and Design. The other option is to be schooled in the general ways of the design world. This mean acquiring expertise from years of experience in working as a designer. People with one, or preferably both, of these credentials will rightfully charge more for their designs than someone who just woke up one day with a paint deck and a dream. The most important thing is to do your research prior to hiring. While hiring a designer can be expensive, and we’re often looked at as a luxury service, what people frequently don’t realize is that we can often save you money. When it comes to selling goods, whether it’s spelled out in terms of disclosing a type of “procurement fee” or not, designers typically charge a 20-40 percent markup on the products they select. While that might sound like a large amount, remember that designers typically get a 20-50 percent discount on these goods. In the end, you are actually receiving a discount and access to products you can’t get as a regular consumer. In addition, the designer is handling all of the hassle of purchasing these items, which involves a lot of really unglamorous things like quotes, purchase orders, acknowledgements and inspections. Ultimately, the most important thing to remember when hiring an interior designer is your personal comfort. In order to have a successful and enjoyable experience, one must not only be comfortable with their pricing and expertise, but their general personality. The design process, especially in residential projects, can be a very intimate one. The designer is helping you select the items you will look at every day and often things as personal as toilets. Make sure the person is someone who’s aesthetic you admire and someone you wouldn’t mind having a glass of wine with. ou may have noticed a cute new shop that just opened on Ocean Drive and Flamevine in the Portales de Vero building. Brooke Steinkamp, a Vero Beach native, and her husband, Nick, opened their boutique just a few weeks ago. It will house a carefully curated selection of goods that do good. Brooke was 15 years old when her parents decided to leave Vero Beach and return to their Illinois home. “My roots are right here, though,” she told me. “I always wanted to come back home.” Opening a boutique has been a longtime dream for Brooke. When she and Nick moved back with four of their five children (the oldest stayed behind to finish high school in Springfield, Illinois), they were inspired and motivated by all of the new businesses that have opened in recent years. Feeling confident that Vero would embrace the idea of a boutique that was committed to giving back, they opened “The Store” by Royal Palm Society. Every brand stocked at The Store is doing its part to make our world a better, more beautiful place. Some brands give back to social causes and charities, while others, like OuterKnown (founded by Kelly Slater and John Moore of the Kering Group) are doing it all by saving the planet through practicing sustainability, recycling plastic for new garments, and committing to Fair Trade practices. Shoppers will also find market totes and handbags by FEED projects, which reduce dependence on grocery bags while providing meals for children. The sunglass company SLYK Shades is partnered with One Tree Planted, and every pair of sunglasses sold plants a tree. They also donate to Calmer Choice, which helps equip children with a suite of skills to increase inner resilience as well as a multitude of organizations working toward suicide prevention and mental health awareness. The Store’s purpose and vision is to seek out superior quality brands and alternatives to fast fashion, toxic products like sunscreens, plastic disposables, and other daily purchases that often plague our consciences. We all know some of our everyday items are not good for us and/or are not produced ethically, and The Store exists to provide options for a guiltfree shopping experience. Brooke and Nick are dedicated to supporting brands that are doing the right thing. Their passion for sustainability and a plastic-free beach is evident immediately upon entering their boutique. Ask them for details on any brand in the store, and they are thrilled to tell you all about the good those products are doing. You’re going to shop, so why not give your money to a good cause at the same time? The Store is a truly refreshing and inspiring place, and Brooke and Nick are committed to helping Vero shop with a purpose.

life balanced

Alignment. Positive Momentum. Level Yoga.

T

he partnership between Level Yoga owners, Carly and Amanda, aligned from a place of intuition. Ten years ago, Carly’s mom said, “You have to meet my yoga teacher!” Carly was in high school at the time and Amanda was teaching locally in Vero Beach. Carly began a yoga practice with Amanda and quickly felt connected. Amanda will never forget the day Carly came to class. “She was so sweet and quiet, and couldn’t touch her toes.” As the years went on, they built a teacher/student relationship but most importantly, a friendship. They were both instantly connected and decided they would partner together to open a yoga studio. Following their instincts, Carly and Amanda created Level Yoga. The alignment of their partnership is one that was built on natural abilities and has allowed them to diversify their roles within Level Yoga. They have settled into a groove and play off each other’s strengths. Carly primarily focuses on the entrepreneurial side of things while Amanda leads the teaching and educational aspects of the studio. “When it comes to working with a partner, it’s just the same as in life: you need to trust one another, respect one another, and ultimately always feel supported and that you’re on the same team. Together, it’s perfect synergy, where we still bounce ideas off one another. This is what has propelled us forward with such positive momentum,” Carly says. In 2018, the duo opened a second studio on Cardinal Drive. This decision had been in the making for a while and came to fruition when the right space came along. “We work so well together and we both know if an idea is feeling forced, we need more time to meditate on it. We knew the second location was necessary for the future of our studio and the needs of our community. The Cardinal location felt just perfect!” Amanda says.

Varietals and More

Both Carly and Amanda are Vero Beach locals who give back to the community that has provided such beautiful lives for them both. You’ll feel their love for their community, their students and their compassion the moment you arrive.

Living the Sweet Life Sweet Society Bakeshop

T

he concept for Sweet Society Bakeshop began in 2017 in Denver, Colorado. VooDoo Donuts was at the top of my list of places to go in the city and boy did I find inspiration in their wacky decorated doughnuts. After returning home, I stewed on the idea of creating some on my own, with my creative twist, of course. Two years later, I baked my first batch of 15 craft doughnuts for a class of three-year-olds as a Valentine’s Day gift. After posting a photo of the marbled shark doughnuts on the internet, I was overwhelmed with the amount of positive feedback and excitement I received. I decided to make more and bring them to work at Walking Tree Brewery for my coworkers and friends (guinea pigs) to try out. The doughnuts disappeared within minutes! The brewery had recently started a small farmers market on Sundays and it seemed like a nice place for me to give a shot at selling my little baked creations. I remember asking my friend and event coordinator, Amanda, if that was something they’d be interested in and I remember her responding, “Do you think you can make enough to fill a booth?” And as the wildly determined gal that I am, I said, “For sure!” knowing good and well I had no idea what I was doing. I hit the ground running researching and obsessing over yeast risen doughnuts and the process of making them. I even took a doughnut making class in Delray. I’ve now been baking a minimum of 200 doughnuts a week and struggling to keep up with the demand. I typically sell out within an hour at the market every Sunday after waking up at 3:45 a.m. to make as many as 15 different flavors ranging from glazed to maple bacon, mango toasted coconut and everything in between. My imagination runs wild with doughnuts and I live for the reactions I get when I explain all of the different flavor combinations. As a Vero Beach native, I dream of opening a small bakery in town to make my treats daily and to be a part of the incredible growth of our sandy little town. Chelsea’s Gourmet Leading the Health Trend with Cold-Pressed Juice

T

hroughout the last decade, the United States has seen a growing health trend in the food industry, but it has taken longer for these trends to develop in less urban areas like Vero Beach. Since taking over ownership of Chelsea’s Gourmet, we’ve made strides in delivering unique foods and healthy alternatives into our community. Chelsea’s Gourmet Juice Bar has been around for nearly two years, inspired by some of the most health-conscious establishments on the west coast. We offer a myriad of natural and organic products: cold-pressed, bottled juice (100 percent organic coming this month), cold-pressed health shots, superfood smoothies, superfood acaí bowls, as well as a full-service coffee bar that concentrates on classic Italian-style coffee drinks. It’s with great excitement that we officially announce that we’ve started to bottle our cold-pressed juices! Why coldpressed? Cold-pressed juice machines extract the most nutrients without heating or oxidizing the produce. First, through a very slow process, the produce is shredded. Next,

a hydraulic system presses and extracts all of the juice and nutrients from the shredded produce. The vitamins and minerals from cold-pressed juice will benefit your body in countless ways, by boosting your immune system, removing toxins from your body, providing hydration, increasing cardiovascular health, lowering blood pressure, acting as a natural energizer, and giving your digestive system a much-needed break! While all of our items are very tasty, flavor was not our sole objective in creating this venture, unlike many smoothie and juice shops in the country. Our motto says it all, “We provide health and happiness,” and true happiness cannot last without health. Check our social media channels for some major upcoming changes and improvements in our products!

Luke Oliver recently bought a 1965 Ford, just for the fun of it. He loves old trucks because they have so much character, especially this one in particular. I asked Luke if he wanted to use it in our wedding so that we could capture its rustic style, and our photographer Martina did just that! We wanted something different and unique as our “getaway” car for our wedding. Its simplicity is what we love most about it and we’re keeping it in its original, classic form. And our dog Scout loves riding in the back, too! We’re so thankful to have had it as a part of our special day; we wouldn’t have wanted anything more. I like to think our relationship is unique, precious and timeless, just like our Ford!

ust like you, your canine companion needs to have healthy teeth and gums. Unlike their people, however, dogs can’t do much to take care of their dental health. When there’s a problem, they may hide the evidence by not showing any pain. There are things you can do to keep your puppy happy and pain-free. Regular vet visits, at-home brushings and chew toys are some of the ways you can ensure those chompers stay strong and healthy for years to come. Why Take Care of Your Dog’s Teeth? Without attention to dental health, your dog may suffer some major health problems. Some you would expect, like build up of plaque and cavities. According to the AVMA, cavities are less common in pets than their people, but some serious canine-specific tooth problems include: • Infected, abscessed, or broken teeth • Periodontal (gum) disease • Broken roots • Mouth cysts or tumors • Teeth misalignment, fractured jaw, palate defects Obviously, these can be quite uncomfortable for your dog. Some problems also affect your dog’s overall health, like periodontal disease. This condition not only causes problems in the mouth but may increase risk for diseases of the heart, kidney and liver. This happens because bacteria on the gums enters the bloodstream. Dental health is important for all dogs, but small breeds like Yorkies and Pomeranians are at greater risk for gum disease. Even as young pups small dogs may have the first signs of periodontal issues. Teeth problems can start early, well before your pooch enters his senior years, so good preventive care is essential. How Can You Spot Dental Problems? Dogs unfortunately can’t tell you when their mouth is starting to feel uncomfortable. You can know it’s time for a vet check up with certain signs, like bad breath, visible buildup on the teeth, problems eating, pawing at the mouth, or lumps around the mouth. 78

May-June 2019

What Can You Do? The good news is that you can take control of your dog’s dental health, and you can start at home. It is easiest to start the routines early, but even if you have a pooch who’s getting on in years you can work with him to support dental health. Brush your dog’s teeth. This may seem like a tall order and it does require some patience. Organizations like the California SPCA have step-by-step guides on how to do it right. Use toothpaste made specifically for dogs (never use human toothpaste), and start slowly with just a bit of paste on a piece of gauze. Try to pick a time when your dog is at ease and speak soothingly to him to keep him relaxed. Feed dry food. Your vet may have specific recommendations for your dog’s diet that you should follow. But if you can, try feeding dry food for dental health. Wet food is more likely to sit on the teeth for longer, eventually leading to decay. Offer chew toys. Your pet store may have toys that are designed to enhance canine teeth health. Give these a try and watch your dog to see if he’s enjoying them. See your vet. Regular checkups help you and your vet to monitor your dog’s dental health and spot any early signs of problems. Your vet may recommend a professional dental cleaning, which typically involves putting your dog under anesthesia. The vet will take x-rays and clean thoroughly under the gum line. Your Dog Will Thank You! Most guardians relish the opportunity to spend more time with their dogs. You can make regular brushings a happy experience for you both, and keep him healthier over the long run. Often, preventive care is the best route to good health.

t’s no surprise that most dogs love a car ride once they discover the joy of putting their head out the window. Feeling the fresh air on their face, they get a thrill from air rushing through their teeth and their lips flapping. For most, that smile on their face brings back joyful memories of our childhood, remembering how we did just the same (often falling asleep out of exhaustion to the hum of the engine). The anticipation builds, and a surprise location or familiar place will appear, with new discoveries awaiting. A good car ride makes any trip fun, even if the destination is the groomer or veterinarian. If your dog is scared, make it a fun and comforting experience. Bring a special toy, stuffed animal or blanket along and maybe their favorite water bowl. Trips and adventures are better when your furry friend is happy and comfortable. A pet safety harness and belt attachment is a great way to stay safe, and a secured cushion with traction helps with balance for those unexpected turns. Driving slow and carefully, especially for pups and seniors, makes it easier on their joints and tummies. Ask your veterinarian for help if your pet gets nauseous, anxious or dizzy from car rides or needs help getting in and out of the car safely. Cats enjoy the view as well, however, they tend to want to move around more, so it’s best to keep them contained in their carrier. Spraying the carrier with natural feline pheromone before the trip has a relaxing effect on your cat, and the trip will be more pleasant. There are lots of ways to help pets enjoy and feel happy during car rides. Remember, keep your eyes on the road, and when you arrive, grab your pet and continue your great experience!

In Memoriam

A. ROBERT CARNEVALE, known to most as just “Bob”, to many as “Mr. C” and as “Bob-Bob” to his grandchildren, passed peacefully March 26 with his family by his side. Born premature and not expected to survive, Bob's life was truly a miracle. After graduating from high school in Philadelphia, Bob joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17. Bob served two years active duty in Germany and several years in the reserves upon his return. In 1961 Bob met the love of his life, Judith Lawrence and they had their first date in Bob’s 1955 T-Bird which began a life-long love affair not only with Judy, but with the hobby of collecting classic cars. Today, Bob’s same T-Bird is still part of his car collection. Bob and Judy married shortly after meeting and had a daughter, Robyn, and a son, Bruce. Family and friends were a big part of their lives. In 2009, Bob and Judy moved to Vero Beach and to everyone’s surprise, the relaxing Vero Beach lifestyle suited Bob well. He cherished his time here and his many new friends in Vero. Bob leaves behind his wife Judy, his daughter, Robyn, his son, Bruce, and his nine beloved grandchildren. Bob will be missed very much.

Financial Essentials Checklist for Your College-Bound Children Adjusting to college life can be stressful. Managing finances shouldn’t be. Consider the following tips, which can help your children manage their finances when leaving for college. Create a Budget - List monthly income sources such as savings, wages, scholarships, stipends, parental allowances and expenses to help your children keep track of their everyday cash flow.

Access to Cash - Consider adding your children as authorized users on your debit card or set up a joint account to help manage their spending. Encourage your children to use ATMs within your bank’s network to avoid ATM fees.

Establishing Credit & Begin Saving - If your children receive income, encourage them to deposit a small amount directly into their savings account. Consider adding your children as authorized cardholders on your account and set monthly spending limits. • Take advantage of online and mobile capabilities to manage their finances on the go, including person-to-person payments to transfer funds easily and quickly via the internet or a mobile phone. • Be financially organized by keeping all financial records, bills, and bank statements in one location. • Be aware of identity theft on college campuses – your children should keep their personal and financial information safe, be cautious about social media postings and password protect their electronic devices.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their

territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day.

Life is a highway, get in your car and drive! No need to stress about gas money, save with GasBuddy. Road trip ready but don’t want a basic car? No problem! With TURO you can rent a unique or luxury car anywhere, anytime!

life in the stars

Happy Spring! Mercury in Aries is very active in the first days of May, so you’ll be more spontaneous, making things unpredictable, but also fun! Then, with Mercury (May 6) and Venus (May 15) joining sun in Taurus, you’ll become more practical and effective. After May 16, with Mars entering Cancer, you’ll need to feel secure before acting. June starts with the new moon in Gemini, on June 3—a good day for new projects implying study and intellectual work. Saturn in Capricorn, for the second time this year on June 18, will show you how to make dreams come true, with hard work and a realistic approach…there’ll be a lot going on, so enjoy it! The month starts with the new moon in your second house of finances— you’ll be budgeting wisely and perhaps looking at starting a new creative project that could be lucrative! Both Mercury and Venus enter your second house…so your talents and creativity will be at the forefront and you’ll be inspired to expand your hobbies and gifts. Venus brings in luxury and you might feel you want to treat yourself this month. Mars coming into your fourth house will give you the drive you need to succeed and push forward with anything you’ve been putting on the back burner. In June, career growth and outward success will be your main priority. Finally, Jupiter is in your ninth house until the end of the year and you’ll be thinking BIG, so hang on to your hat! Happy Birthday, Taurus! New opportunities will open up for you in May (and into June). The new moon will be in your first house, enabling you to shed your old skin and you might revamp your wardrobe, start a new hobby or redecorate your home! Venus coming in will enable you to resolve any conflicts. Your natural charm and grounded nature will be appreciated by those who might need extra support. Your confidence will be at an all-time high. The full moon will be in your house of relationships, which might bring new love into your life, whilst those who are already coupled up will feel the desire for romance. June foretells that you’ll be more focused on your professional development. It’s your birthday month! May begins with the new moon in your twelfth house – you’ll need to balance work and play, and also feel the need for some solitude to review your past and consider what you want to achieve in the future. You’ll be drawn to finding the space and peace to reflect and to realign your personal life and to see the wood for the trees. With Venus also in your twelfth house, the past comes into play. Expect old lovers and past friends to suddenly get in touch. The full moon on May 18 is in your sixth house of health and work—are there changes you need to make? What are your ambitions? New horizons beckon in June, so embrace your passions—this is the time! We start with the new moon in your eleventh house of relationships—so you’ll enjoy time at home with family, reconnect with friends, and your natural, warm nature will be on show. You’ll be collaborating with people in your community and perhaps looking at new ways to protect the planet, from recycling to deciding to gather a group of like-minded souls to combine a picnic with some litter picking. You might feel more creative and playful, so enjoy time with your children, perhaps booking tickets for the theatre, festival, or combine both fun and exercise. In June, your social life will be important and extremely successful! Your tenth house of new opportunities will bring you some excitement! You’ll be reviewing your day-to-day life and injecting some fun or creative pursuits into your daily routine. Venus may bring some good news about your career. You might feel creative and want to start a blog or begin a novel that’s been on the back-burner for a while—it’s a time for magic! The sun comes into your eleventh house and asks, “What are your dreams and wishes?” You might want to reconnect with your ‘inner self ’ and feel the need to learn more about spirituality, religion or psychology. Towards the end of June, your endurance could be tested, but you can do it, you have the strength of a lion! Your ninth house will be accented as there’s a lot of planetary activity going on. You’ll be doing some deep thinking, feel the need to expand your view on life—some will be looking to step out of day-to-day life and see things with a new perspective. On May 7, Mercury and Venus boost your energy. It’s a wonderful time to connect with others overseas or take on new study, inspiring you to reach beyond your comfort zone to find new pursuits and a chance to bring fresh energy into your life. You might feel some frustration with friends and colleagues – take a step back and think before you speak. June will allow you to sit down and relax as things calm down on their own with the help of friends and family members. There are many planets lining up in your eighth house—this is the house of the hidden, your subconscious. This is an opportunity to remove any blockages and release the old. You’ll feel lighter with a new sense of optimism. It’s a month of anything ‘new’—jobs, new ways of thinking, maybe a new romance. You might be feeling lucky at this time, too, so take a chance on the lottery or perhaps you’ll be winning a prize! Mars in your ninth house will make you feel like packing your bags. Perhaps this is the time for a yoga retreat or to spend a weekend by the sea. June will be all about family and personal relationships. You might find yourself in new circle of friends!

May-June 2019

This is a powerful time for relationships. Perhaps you’re hoping to pep up your partnership, expand your social life, or join a new online society. You’ll be thinking about connections in all forms—anything that brings emotional harmony and peace. Now is the time to see old friends and bring new people into your life. The full moon is in your first house—this is all about you! What do you need to bring change into your life? A time for personal growth and considering the metaphysical—numerology, philosophy and Tarot may be of interest at this time. In mid-June, you’ll exhibit a whole lot of independence in the things that you indulge in, there will be no stopping you! Your main desire at this time is for expansion in all forms. Think about the bigger picture and embrace anything that you’ve always wanted to do to refresh your day-to-day life. You’ll also feel you need to look at how you’re taking care of your physical self. Take the time to look at your nutrition, maybe you’ll be join a gym or consider acupuncture for any aches or pains. You’ll be super-confident this spring and you won’t be shy in expressing what you want to bring into your life. Communication is KEY! Now is the time to clear up any misunderstandings and begin this period with a clean slate. By the end of June, you’ll realise there have been many much-needed changes that have taken place. We start off with emphasis on your fifth house of enjoyment! Yay! This is the house of play and excitement. When is the last time you did something impulsive or out of the norm? Bring out your inner child! You’re ruled by Saturn, which can make you feel a little ‘serious,’ so this will bring in some happy, light-hearted energy into your life. When you do what you love, you blossom, and that happiness and youthful energy is contagious. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to salsa dance or paint watercolours? Career and worldly ambitions will be your priority in June. The planet Mars will allow you to focus on your family, and support from your nearest and dearest will be vital in achieving your dreams. ‘Home is where the heart is’ will be the phrase on your mind at this time as we enjoy springtime. Perhaps you’re planning on selling your home, relocating, or deciding to liven up your surroundings. Have you considered buying new furnishings or to embrace Feng Shui?! You might also feel the desire to research your ancestry and find out more about your family tree. Mars in your fifth house may bring out your inner entrepreneur, whether it’s writing, cooking, gardening, or perhaps working on creating a new online business. What makes you happy? In mid-June, you’ll be focusing on past creative ideas or developing your career prospects to further achieve your ambitions! There will be a lot of planetary action in your third house as we move firmly into spring—communication, learning, sharing your knowledge and short travel are all indicated! This is a good time to get out and about to connect with others. If you’ve been in ‘hermit mode’ the past few months, if you make the effort to reach out, you might be surprised at who you meet and what you discover. You might want to plan an adventure as you could feel the desire to take off and relieve some restlessness. Towards the end of May, you might be feeling more grounded than usual, and want to really come out of your shell to make yourself known to the world around you. Be brave, be your true self, and you’ll sail through June with renewed self-esteem and confidence!
