Yachts to Talk About!
T
his issue is loaded with yachts! Yachts of beautiful images, yachts of great stories, and yachts of fun! We are thrilled to showcase our cover photographer, Connor Jenkins, with his amazing drone and lifestyle images. Connor’s family has been in the business of selling boats his entire life – and it’s truly a family affair. Boating is a lifestyle here on the east coast of Florida and this issue really makes us want to spend more time on the water doing the things we love. We were fortunate to shoot our cover image, a few others like the one featured on this page, and our “This is Us” image aboard a super mega yacht the day before the Palm Beach Boat Show. We couldn’t have done it without the assistance of Kathi and Andrew Doole. They are the perfect team to orchestrate the big boat shows in Florida and have done so for many years. We can’t thank them enough and the crew of the “Quantum”—we felt like we were on the set of a James Bond 007 movie! It was such a fun day on the water! Be sure and read all about Andrew on page 55. I love boating on the weekends with my family. One day I hope to live on a catamaran, setting sail wherever the wind blows. For now, I can’t wait to snorkel and dive our beautiful reefs just offshore. As we get ready to spend more time outside, be safe out there and be sure to wear your sunscreen. Summer is almost here!

Yachts of Fun! Our work at Portfolio can be long hot days in the sun to get that perfect shot, but we always try to make it fun. Our cover model, Reilly Koontz, has worked with me for more than two years now as a full-time employee. Prior to that, she interned with me before graduating from the University of North Florida. She runs our social media, models, keeps me organized and is my right-hand girl. Working alongside her is always a blast! We work hard but try to play hard, too! Being on board the "Quatum" mega yacht for our cover shot was probably the coolest photo shoot we’ve ever done. The super yacht is 220+ feet and has a helicopter pad on the bow! Pretty cool, right?!

Uncharted water is a family affair. T
he thickness of the summer heat had nothing
but our silence to stick to. Our bodies stood
shoulder to shoulder, motionless. Eyes fixed, as if in a trance, on what lay before us, the sight reminiscent of a landscape setting out of an apocalyptic fantasy. My father was first to walk to the waterline for a full visual survey of what was once the dockyard. The remains of boats ripped in half exposed, once beautiful interiors, now flooded with brackish water. Dock debris and fiberglass shards rested evenly across the water’s surface, ominously spread as if icing on a cake. On that day in 2004, I saw something that taught me one of the greatest lessons I have ever learned. It wasn’t about the powerful destructive force of the hurricanes or the ravished shipyard and docks. What I saw and recognized was in my family; an unwillingness to stop, a refusal to let the elements of nature dictate their drive for success, an uncomfortableness with giving up.

Ever since I was a child, I loved
going into my father’s place of work. He had the street view corner office of Allied Marine and would bring me along some weekends. He sat dominant at a teak desk with old diver’s coins shellacked into the frame. Salesman of the year awards hung proudly around the brim of his office, while numerous photos of my two older brothers, me and our mother hung prominently at eye level. As I sat and drew 2-dimensional outlines of sportfishing vessels, my father would simultaneously test the lean of his office chair and the decibels of his voice while jovially taking sales calls. When he was finished, he would lock up and we would head home to play pick-up basketball with my brothers, followed by dinner as a family. The yacht industry was different back then. He would sometimes be gone for weeks, sent overseas to countries, like Italy for introduction on the newly created vessels, or be put up in fancy hotels along with my mother, just for corporate meetings. My father even received a brand-new Mercedes one year for being the top yacht broker. From my perspective, everything changed in a flash. The economy crashed, the hurricanes hit, record lows across the country were being recorded, and something had to change. My family, beginning in my father, found no solace in giving up. He could have ended his career in yacht sales right then, and no one would be able to blame him. Instead, my father looked for ways to reach more clients, to be more easily accessible than a phone call, and to provide for his wife and children. Together, he and our mother started a monthly newsletter, highlighting every listing and available vessel they could feature. While our father wrote the specifications and info for each yacht, it was my mother who became the powerhouse behind the feature. She spearheaded the design and editing, and wrote special articles monthly, offering a range of nautical related pieces to clients and owners, even monthly food recipes. 96’ MAIORA / Joe Williams 14

It was during this time
my father spotted the trend in social
platforms, like YouTube and Facebook, and saw the need to have more and more photos and videos of his listings. He encouraged me, his youngest, to pick up a camera and press record, thus launching me into what would become my full time career. My father passed on his knowledge, honest ethics and drive in the industry to the oldest of us boys and most adept at sales, my brother Brett, who has found much success in brokering luxury yachts.

That leaves our middle brother, Sky. He’s not in the yachting industry like the rest of us, having been gifted with superior intellectual abilities, he is well on his way to becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Though, I have a feeling that in a few years, he might just receive a newsletter highlighting the best yacht deals of the month, thus changing my prior statement. Hopefully he’ll want some photos and videos. 58E MARLOW / Bill Cook

life captured
T
hirteen-year-old me didn't know the difference between aperture and a record button, but that didn't stop my father from handing me a Sony DCR mini DVD camcorder after requesting I put my creativity to work. At the time, my father Tom Jenkins, had been a yacht broker for more than 30 years and spotted the current social trend of YouTube and its importance in yacht sales. Unaware of my own ability and creativity, I was driven by his consistent and gentle encouragement to pick up that camera and start recording his listings. The learning curve was definitely steep. I used what was at my disposal in order to get better: feature learning management systems and YouTube. I studied directors like Scorsese and Lynch to learn the importance of edit timing and the immersive properties of sound design, as well as angles, focal lengths and camera techniques. Time passed, equipment got better, and encouragement from my father only grew. However, yacht videography was at best a supplemental income while I went through high school and college. It didn’t become a full-time career until after meeting the love of my life. I was caught completely off guard by her smile and fell immediately in love with a woman who is so incredibly beautiful on the inside that her outward appearance can't help but to be gorgeous. My wife saw that same creative passion in me that my father had seen, and just as he did, she encouraged me relentlessly to pursue a full-time career in media. She'll never boast of her own work, but her talent and eye for photography has been the premiere source of my drive for perfection when I shoot. In fact, I may have never started shooting still photography if it weren't for her. Yacht photography and videography is an absolute passion of mine. I love every aspect of it. I love the ocean and traveling. I love piloting drones at top speed and capturing the craftsmanship and linework that goes into each individual vessel to make them unique. I love editing down hours of video footage into specialized marketing material that uses very specific audio and visual pacing to help sell these multi-million-dollar vessels. I enjoy overcoming the difficulties of lighting, photographing in tight spaces, and ever changing interiors. Because each vessel differs from one another so drastically, I have the perfect platform to really push my own creative style in the industry. Reviewing older work is what drives me to produce the absolute best material for my clients. Material that is unique, that flows, and that ultimately sells. I love pretty much every single aspect of what I do and I'm beyond thankful I get to call it a career. Even more so, I deeply love and am thankful to those who have encouraged me to be what I am today. To all the brokers and owners who have trusted me with capturing their vessels, and to those who view my work. Wheels, Wings and Magic
Private Fly-in Community is a Beacon for Pilots
F
rom wheels and keels to wings, that magical blue of the sky and sea captures hearts and souls, enthralling them for a lifetime. After years of soaring thermals, shooting approaches and exploring this earth, aviators must eventually return home. What better place to savor and share your passion than with your own private hangar? Especially when it’s part of your home, which happens to be on a 4,000-foot runway in western St. Lucie County. This private fly-in community is a beacon for pilots, perfectly situated in the heart of the Treasure Coast. Surrounded by oaks, pines and wetlands, with opera music wafting through the air, this hangar becomes the gathering spot for flyers, veterans, novices and students. It’s a place where stories and adventures of mentoring and love are shared. It’s a place to teach the next generation about ailerons, altitude and attitudes, of checklists and check rides. Fellow aviators feel free to stop by in helicopters and airplanes to chat or work on a mechanical issue. After all, by air, Indiantown, Okeechobee, Stuart or Vero Beach are only 10 minutes away—the proverbial hop, skip and jump— or should we say hop, skip and land? Whether it's a touchstone to heaven or the fountain of youth, when you’re doing something you love, you are a beacon of happiness. You shine, beckoning other like-minded people to gather ‘round and ride with you through your portal to the sky.

Summer "Camp" at Home
Create a Summer Filled with Fun
W
hile there have been many downsides to this awful pandemic, I have found a silver lining. Last summer when we were cooped up at home and summer camps were closed, I decided to throw my own summer camp for my boys (then ages 3 and 7). Our theme was “Knights in Training” and every day we learned the Knight's Code of Chivalry (a sneaky way of getting some character training in), did a simple craft, read lots of inspiring stories of knights and their heroic exploits, and then we would head outside for an engaging activity—archery, water sword fighting, or joisting with pool noodles and stick horses to name a few! “This is the best summer ever! Can we have Knights in Training again?” My boys were delighted and all I could think of was how wonderful it was that we got to spend this time playing together. It was a summer we will never forget! I’m kind of a sentimental person and I started thinking that we only get about 18 summers with our children before they are out on their own, or at least old enough to do as they please for summer breaks. Why not make a summer camp every year? This year it’s all about camping. I showed my husband a few pictures on Pinterest and after a little daddy and son project, he and our boys had built a simple tent with some wood and painter's canvas. We added a couple of child-size chairs, a comfy rug and a few wood crates for table and storage, some “official” camp signs, and of course, hammocks. The boys now have a “campsite” in our backyard. From the moment we set up the tent they have been playing “camp." I reward them with badge stickers for keeping their campsite clean or for doing other special activities. They feel so grown up and I get to relax and watch them play for hours outside. This summer will be unforgettable; full of outdoor exploring, marshmallow roasting, fishing, boating, hammock lounging, and everything else kids get up to outdoors! 30
May-June 2021
Here are a few ideas to help you create a summer filled with fun for the whole family, right in your backyard. Set Up Camp - Build a tent with sheets, tarps or painter’s canvas and wood (be sure to make it open enough for a little breeze to blow through!) Provide gear like small furniture, pillows, rug, crates for storage and/or table, a broom, and waste bin. Nature Craft - Paint or color canvas backpacks with homemade paint brushes. Purchase simple canvas backpacks. Send your child out to find leaves, grass, flowers and sticks. Tie the leaves, etc. onto the sticks. Give your child some paints to dip their homemade paint brushes in and see what beautiful textures they produce! Snacks - Stock up on locally grown fruits and veggies; anything plant based to encourage the outdoor theme (baby cucumbers, baby snap peas, mangos, bananas, kiwis…the list is endless!) Give every child their own water canteen or water bottle, or a pitcher of water with their own camping mug to encourage staying hydrated. Bonus: have a lesson on opening coconuts and let them enjoy fresh coconut water! Outdoor Activity - Host a native Florida scavenger hunt. Give your child a book or printout about some of the wildlife of Florida, i.e. birds, fish, animals, and plants. Send them on a scavenger hunt to find as much native flora and fauna as they can. You can even provide them with a nature journal to draw or write about their wild discoveries. Read Nature Books - Read stories together like “Secrets of the Woods” by William J. Long, one of a series of nature books that take the reader on a journey into the life and habits of wild animals and birds. Encourage them to write a story of their observations of the habits of wildlife that live in their backyard. Whatever your summer looks like, I hope you create many wonderful memories together as a family. Our children need us to engage them much more than they need a special program or well-planned camp. I hope you enjoy the moments together no matter what activities you do! Written and photography by Olivia Assaf Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

“Literary readers seeking writings replete with wake-up calls for change will find The Butterfly Bruises to be reflective, visionary, and hard to put down.” - Diane Donovan of The Midwest Book Review
Palmer Smith
"The Butterfly Bruises"
P
almer Smith grew up in New York City, but each summer her mother would load up their car and drive south with Palmer and her brother, starting with North Carolina and working their way down to Florida, where most of Palmer's extended family resides. Along the journey and over the years, Palmer fell in love with both New York City and the southeast and constantly analyzed the cultural differences and similarities of both regions. Her new poetry and short story collection, The Butterfly Bruises, published by Press Dionysus, is a collection of approximately 80 poems and four short stories. It is a general meditation on animals, the ocean, miscommunication, childhood, a northeastern vs. southern American culture, family, nature vs. technology, and the imagination of the introvert. Palmer hopes that The Butterfly Bruises will make the reader question what it means to be living and communicating in the world today, while also giving the reader space to answer these questions for themselves. Palmer's poems have been praised by the CFO of Garden and Gun Magazine, amongst many others. You can find her book at the Vero Beach Book Center and in bookstores across the U.S. and U.K. Written by Joanelle Mulrain | Portrait by Jasper Soloff | Cover by Evi Antoniou

A conversation with Cindy and Lily O’Dare
L
ily: I am always so inspired by you, Mom. We are sitting here in your beautiful house, on your comfy white couches, there are lilies, roses, hydrangeas, and orchids surrounding us, and some Brazilian jazz is playing—our favorite. It smells like jasmine and citrus, and you look stunning. Cindy: Well I just love it when you’re here Lil. I can’t believe you finally left the nest. Lily: Believe me, you didn’t make it easy! That’s why I’m always over, and now sharing the same career path—it’s just a way for me to hang out with you more. Cindy: Haha, I was always hoping you would get into real estate— and of course, you are a natural. Lily: OK, so now I’m going to ask you some questions. I love to write and preserve our precious memories. I thought this would be a great way to remember Mother’s Day this year. Cindy: I love you. Lily: I love you too!
What are you most proud of? Cindy: I am most proud of you and Katie. You two are the most incredible individuals and I can’t help but cry and beam with pride thinking about all that you both have overcome. Your love for life is amazing. Lily: OK, now I’m crying! So travel has been on pause for quite some time now. Do you have a favorite travel memory? Cindy: My favorite travel memory is traveling cross country on a motorcycle when I was 24 years old. Of course my trips to Barbados, and also Cabo with you! I was so impressed that you had been to Mexico so many times on your own for work and I finally got to experience your world during that trip. Lily: That’s one of my favorite memories too. Remember when we sat down for that sunset dinner at Flora Farms and both started crying? We were surrounded by beautiful flowers, gardens, organic produce and herbs growing all around our table—it was heaven. I miss Mexico! Let’s go one day soon. Cindy: Yes, please. Lily: So a year and more without big travel, what would you say your takeaway is from 2020/COVID-19? Cindy: I learned that the world is a beautiful place if you can slow down and take time to smell the roses. Life is precious and can be gone in an instant. Lily: Isn’t that the truth. Speaking of roses, we both have such a love for flowers. I know that I got that from you. I’m so happy it’s spring time and everything is blooming again. Do you have a favorite flower? Cindy: Gardenias, for so many reasons. Lily: Can I copy you and say Gardenias too? Cindy: Yes. Lily: Do you have a favorite scent? Cindy: That’s impossible for me to say. I love candles, perfume, Molton Brown bubble bath, lilies, peonies, roses, gardenias, fresh bread Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
baking, coffee, popcorn popping, chicken roasting in the oven, I could go on and on. Lily: Wow, ditto.
How do you make a house a home? Cindy: Every home has an energy. I’d say equal parts love, cooking, music, cleaning, candles, and flowers. Nice windows and sunshine help too. Lily: What is your favorite house you ever lived in? Cindy: My favorite house I ever lived in was a tiny street called Atlantic Way in Miami Beach with only 8 houses on it, built in 1926. It had Dade County pine floors, a big claw foot bathtub, two fireplaces, and sat directly on the ocean. Hardly anyone ever knew it existed. Lily: What are you most excited for this summer? Cindy: You already know the answer, but North Carolina cabin life! Our happy place. Lily: I am already mentally there. Cindy: Me too. Lily: What is your secret to aging gracefully? You are the most lovely, stylish, and pretty woman I know. Cindy: Thank you Lily. I try to stay relevant and curious, and interested in other people’s stories. Lily: I love that about you. Share a favorite memory that comes to mind. Cindy: Dinner at my grandmother’s house every Sunday. Meeting my best friend on the playground at age 9. Going on tour with the Eagles. When you and Katie were born. Sitting on David Busch’s porch watching his chickens. Lily: If you could, what would you tell your 30-year-old self? Cindy: You are beautiful. Lily: What do you see for yourself for the next 30 years? Cindy: A very curated, thoughtful, and joyful life. Lily: OK, so I have to ask about real estate. What do you think about the current market in our town? Cindy: The market in Vero has changed forever. We are in a new phase. I’m not sure if it’s good, bad, or both! Lily: Amen to that. I’m really enjoying it, I have to say. Cindy: Well, you are on fire! Lily: I am lucky to be learning from the very best. So how do you want to celebrate your birthday this year? Cindy: A luncheon in my garden with lots of friends. Lily: Speaking of your garden, I must bring up the owls. Ivy and Fox, our owls that came last spring, are back again and more in love than ever! What do you think about them? Cindy: Our natural world is pure magic and I am thankful they feel safe and happy in my garden. I think they will always return. Lily: OK, last question: do you love your French bulldog Clarabell more than me? Cindy: Hmmm, now you’re throwing out the hard questions! Photography by Bronwyn Knight May-June 2021

Christina Bruce Interiors:
Which Blue is For You?
T
here are infinite shades of blue. Navy, robin’s egg, sky, cobalt, azure, slate, indigo, cerulean… you get the point. While any of these shades can be beautiful in a room, there are a few dos and don’ts I typically like to follow when selecting the perfect blue. Most importantly, the specific blue you choose should depend on where it is being used. When it comes to blue interior paint, it’s easy to go wrong. A sophisticated dining room can end up looking like a boy’s nursery if you aren’t careful. The two things I consider when selecting blue paint is tone and saturation. If you want a deep color with a fair amount of saturation, look for a tone that contains some gray. A color like Sherwin Williams Samovar Silver will give you enough color but because it’s more of a gray blue, it won’t appear juvenile. If blue grays aren’t right for you, I recommend avoiding a very saturated color. Icicle, also from Sherwin Williams, is essentially a true blue but is a
46

very diluted version. This very subtle light blue will give you the blue color without being overwhelming. I recommend that brighter blues be used as accents unless you truly are going for a bold look. Brighter cobalt, teal and aqua make beautiful pops of color both inside and out of the home. These colors can be great in accent pillows or small accent tiles in a bath. They also can give a fun beachy look to an exterior when used on shutters. The one blue that has no rules or restrictions is navy. Navy, to me, is always right. Need a striking wall color for a dining room? Navy. You want a strong accent color in any palette? Navy. What coordinates beautifully with fuchsia, emerald green or canary yellow? Navy, navy, navy. It can also look amazing on furniture. A navy piece can enhance any room, such as this beautiful lattice bed shown in my Midshipman Midnight from the Christina Bruce Collection for David Francis Furniture, pictured here. If you follow these simple guidelines, I’m confident that you’ll be able to find the right shade of blue for you! Living Walls
D
on’t limit your garden planting to ground shrubs when you can grow plants on a garden wall, or even the exterior of your home! Many people shy away from doing this for maintenance reasons. However, if you choose a few prime locations and calculate the benefits over time, you will find that there are applications that are worth the investment for the beauty they create. Espalier is “the horticultural and ancient agricultural practice of controlling plant growth by pruning or tying branches to a frame.” On the Treasure Coast, the most common plants to espalier are Bougainvillea— trellis form, and Confederate Jasmine. Bougainvillea is best espaliered to a trellis or garden archway. The plant can be trained to stay within a column, flow across a trellis, or fill a wall in one mass of color. Bougainvillea love sunny locations and can grow three feet per year. Confederate Jasmine, which produce white flowers in the spring, can be trained into a variety of patterns. Jasmine can grow in full or partial sun, but flower more in the sun. After selecting a location, we recommend measuring and marking a pattern of equally spaced locations for wall anchors. These spots should be drilled and filled with small eyelets. If you are working with Bougainvillea, the next step is to plant the vine and place the branches in the desired location and then strap them in place using monofilament fishing line. With Confederate Jasmine, you can lay out the fishing line in a square or diamond pattern first and then wind the plant around the desired pattern. When it is time to repaint the wall, snip the fishing line and lay the plant down flat. After maintenance is finished, re-attach with new line. Another approach for living walls is to plant Ficus repens—Creeping Fig. Ficus repens is a fast-growing plant that will quickly take over a wall and can be planted in most conditions. The benefit of using Ficus repens is you can hide a wall that would otherwise be too stark and stand out too much. The downside comes when it’s time for maintenance and you have to remove the plant entirely. For some applications, this is an acceptable compromise as some walls aren’t painted very often and replacement Ficus repens grows so quickly. As you look for additional ways to enhance your environs, consider adding vines on a wall to add to your garden’s beauty. Learn more at AielloLandscape.com. Dee’s Doormats
An Entrepreneurial Journey
F
or as long as I can remember, my mind has been brainstorming to start a business I can call my own; my pride and joy. It hasn’t been easy. It has led to many sleepless nights and even more anxiety. My entrepreneurial journey started back in 2012. I remember seeing an ad in the newspaper for the grand opening of a craft store. It was a three-day event that offered a $20 gift card per day to the first 10 customers. The store opened at 8 a.m., I was there at 7:30 a.m. every day, waiting for my gift card. After all, the sewing machine I wanted was $50. My first shop was called OnlyDeeDee’s, and while it started off with hairbows, it quickly changed into flower crowns to adjust to the latest fad. After my sales started to plummet, I knew I had to find something that wasn’t short lived and in constant demand. A couple of years later, the shop switched to marbled clay coasters and decals. At this time, I was completing my bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida. While at UF, I prioritized utilizing my resources. I joined the entrepreneurship club and became a member of the Gator Hatchery, an on-campus shop where students are able to sell their products to the public. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
While the coasters and decals did seemingly better than the previous products, they still weren’t taking off like I had hoped. Once I graduated, I took some time off from my entrepreneurial adventures and found a “real” job. During that period, my mind continued searching for a better product. When the pandemic hit, things got tough for everyone. I lost my job just like many others and sitting around doing nothing was not cutting it for me. My best friends’ birthday was coming up and she had just bought a house, so I thought, “What’s a more fitting present than a custom doormat?” I had an idea for the perfect design but was having trouble finding something similar. If I wanted a doormat with my design, I was going to have to do it myself. After my initial doormat got the attention and support of my friends and family, I decided to make them available to the public. Now, here I am 92 doormats later. Sometimes you just have to keep on keeping on. Follow us @deesdoormats or visit DeesDoormats.com to learn more. Written by Daniella Diminich | Photography by Ryan Miller May-June 2021

y name is Forest Johnson. I’m a photographer and cinematographer based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and my quality imagery and footage has earned worldwide recognition. Born in Miami, I’ve been a resident of South Florida my entire life and my familiarity with the area has been advantageous to my career. Being around boats since birth has also helped, as well as my passion for aviation. The east coast of South Florida is well known as the boating capitol of the world. Our climate and close proximity to the Bahamas and Caribbean add to the reputation of being a year-round playground. It’s the perfect place for a family whose livelihood revolves around the marine industry. My father, Forest E. Johnson, is a famous boat-builder who designed and built Prowler Boats. After his passing, I became involved in the family business with my mother, Heidi. Prior to that, photography was only a hobby. My real interest was flying, especially helicopters. As far back as 8 years old, if I received an “A” on my report card, my parents rewarded me with a 15-minute helicopter ride. Armed with a small camera and the thrill of flying, my passion was ignited. Almost overnight I found myself running a boat-building business. Dwindling build requests and an impending energy crisis made saving money a priority. Without the finances to hire professional photographers for our ads and brochures, I had to do it myself. Using a hand-me-down

Nikon F-2 Photomic camera, I harassed all the local operators of photo labs about the best ways to shoot a boat… and received a completely different answer from each one! As a result, l learned using the trial-and-error method. I had no formal training in photography, so I kept trying different techniques until I found one that worked. After a while, I became really good and efficient. In 1976, the family business was sold. A year later, I joined the staff at Bertram Yacht, where I truly began to hone my skills as a boat photographer. I spent eight years as the advertising and sales promotion manager, photographing all the products. In 1986, I began a full-time career as a location and aerial photographer specializing in the marine industry. This profession has since taken me to various corners of the world, all the while meeting and working with many great people. I’ve been fortunate to have won many awards, including International Photographer of the Year for the Bahamas. I was also named by Popular Photo magazine as a true “specialist” in my field. However, one of my favorite accomplishments is photographing more than 1,600 magazine covers… and still counting! Learn more at ForestJohnson.com. Native Bird Boxes
Song Birds Over Water
D
o you recall your grandparents having these ornate condominium type birdhouses out in the middle of the yard or out near an edge of a lake? Why were the birds not there all the time? Well, these beautiful singing birds that fly so fast over water and are known for being voracious insect eaters are called purple martins, or Progne subis. They are the largest of the swallow family that migrate from Brazil to North America living in colonies. They typically begin to arrive around January 1, along the Gulf Coast states. Months later, the other parts of the colonies that stay in flight over land make their way over Central America, through Mexico, then disperse all across the North American region after passing Texas. Why, you ask, do they migrate so far? To raise young and have better foraging opportunities to potentially raise a healthier clutch than the opportunities they have in South America. Yes, crazy and confusing, but scientists have provided the research and the diagnosis that during the purple martins’ evolution and migration times, they had longer days to forage to successfully raise young.
56
May-June 2021
In the southeastern North American regions, where these purple martins arrive first during migration after flying all the way over the Gulf of Mexico, where do they go? Well, they head back south to Brazil once again, not further north to be with the greater colonies. Yes, some have a round trip of over 5,000 miles! Why the name ‘purple martin’ if the bird is black in color? When the sun shines on their upper feathers around their backs leading to the wings, the black color is iridescent and appears dark bluish to purple. Males are completely dark, whereas the females and immature birds are duller in primary color with whitish chest to bellies. Next time you see that apartment birdhouse on a pole, just think, that small little bird might have flown all the way across the Gulf of Mexico and made it to its nesting ground! Down Sea Charters
Fishing with Live Bait
F
ishing with live bait is the most popular way to land trophy fish on the Treasure Coast, especially saltwater fishing. Some days catching bait is actually far more challenging than catching the actual targeted species. Dedicating precious time during the day to catch bait can be mentally and physically exhausting, but one would say the benefits outweigh the hardships. There are several advantages to catching live bait. One is just that it’s lively! This bait has not been swimming in a pen or in a tank inside a bait store for who knows how long. Very infrequently can one actually buy the bait we prefer to use during a day on the water. However, in South Florida during sailfish season when live bait is for sale, it can cost upwards of $10 per bait! Catching bait allows anglers to be independent as well as hold value on any boat they step foot on. Finally, one of the last benefits from bait fishing is that it allows one to create a proper understanding of patterns and seasonality of baitfish. Through figuring out when and where baitfish reside, what they feed on, and how they interact in nature, it can allow an angler to better understand the actual gamefish he or she is targeting. There are many different species of baitfish in this area. The most common are mullet, pinfish, threadfin herring, and scaled sardines (also known as pilchards). Our main baitfish year-round is mullet. Within the mullet family,
60
May-June 2021
there is the silver mullet and the black mullet. Both of these are on average the most consistent prey items for predators nearshore as well as in our lagoon. In order to catch mullet, it is crucial to throw a cast net. Good vison and quick reflexes are required. Pinfish can be caught in a pinfish trap, baiting the trap with shrimp and soaking it for a couple days will yield a good number. Threadfin and pilchards are simply the “Snickers bar of the sea.” Everything eats them. You can use them as bait inshore and offshore and have much success. Target these species using a Sabiki rig off the beach, as well as throwing a cast net. A good foundation for a successful day always starts with bait. Success is earned not given. It requires skill, knowledge and patience. If you’re not already proficient in obtaining your own live bait, it’s time to start. You’ll save money, certainly catch more, and achieve a level of gratification that only comes with enticing quality fish on bait that you invested your own time and energy to catch. For inshore and offshore charter inquiries, please contact Captain Sam Atwell at sam@downseacharters.com, or call (772) 532-9347. You can also find him on @captsamatwell. Saving Wildlife
One Animal at a Time
F
rom the age of eight, Annie Page-Karjian knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. Yet, it was an experience with a leatherback sea turtle on a Central American beach that ultimately steered her career—and life. Now, she’s landed her dream job as a research professor and clinical veterinarian at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. After graduating from the College of Charleston with a degree in biology, Annie moved to Costa Rica and worked as a biologist at Las Baulas National Marine Park. One night, a leatherback sea turtle crawled onto the beach with fishing line wrapped around her shoulder and digging into her flipper, nearly cutting it in half. “I wanted to help but the park guards did not share my concerns,” she said. Determined to help, Annie ran a mile down the beach to get a knife, returned and cut the line. That season, the turtle nested 10 more times. “I knew this was what I wanted to do with my whole life,” she said. In 2007, she applied to the veterinary program at the University of Georgia—and got in. Now, Annie is busy as a professor and veterinarian at FAU Harbor Branch, which requires many different responsibilities. As a researcher, she studies the health and diseases of wildlife, like toxins from harmful algal blooms in sea turtles and plastics in marine mammals. She’s the lead veterinarian for the marine mammal stranding program, which requires everything from banking tissues of dead animals for future research projects Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
and determining the cause of death to helping rescue and transport live animals who can receive treatment. She also advises graduate students and teaches classes. As a veterinarian on the stranding team, one of the hardest cases she’s faced in her career was when a newborn sperm whale stranded alive on a beach in South Florida. Likely, something happened to the mother and it was too young to survive without her, she said, and so there was nothing to be done for the calf. It was Annie’s job to euthanize the baby whale. “As a mother, that was tough and a very hard day,” she said. “But it’s also a really important service that we provide to the animal—to alleviate suffering.” Annie has a deep compassion for animals. However, because of that compassion, working with sick and dying animals can be emotionally taxing, which is why she also spends a lot of her time as a researcher who specializes in aquatic animal health. One of her research specialties is studying a tumor disease in sea turtles called fibropapillomatosis, which has been associated with polluted waters. Annie credits a lot of her success to collaborations and working with other scientists. “It’s very rewarding to me because each collaborator has unique expertise that they can contribute.” Written and photography by Bethany Augliere May-June 2021

Iconic Marine Mammal
The Florida Manatee
I
t’s been a tough 2021 for the Sunshine State’s iconic marine mammal, the Florida manatee. In the first two months, 403 manatees have died, which is more than triple the normal amount of fatalities seen during the same period over the last five years, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. These gentle sea cows face threats from habitat loss, collision with boats, entanglement in fishing gear, human harassment and exposure to red tide and other harmful algal blooms. In recent decades, however, their populations have improved. Currently, the population is estimated to be about 7,000, and they are key to the health of Florida’s marine and freshwater ecosystems. They live in the rivers, bays, canals, estuaries and coastal areas, moving between fresh and salt waters. “Manatees are important environmental “engineers” in that they eat sea grass and help maintain the balance of seagrass beds, and are therefore important animals to have in our environment,” says Beth Brady, PhD, a manatee biologist with Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. Scientists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission suspect that starvation is one reason these manatees are dying. Since 2009, 58 percent of the seagrass has disappeared, mostly because of an increase in nutrients in the water resulting from runoff into the lagoon, according to FWC. Yet, starvation isn’t their only threat. As the warm weather approaches, manatees will share the waterways with hundreds of thousands of watercrafts and people. In a 10-year study by FWC published in 2020, scientists found that one in every four manatee carcasses had evidence of boat strikes, which account for about 20 to 25 percent of all manatee deaths. “Manatees spend a lot of time at or just under the surface of the water. They need to come up to breathe, and they will nap just below the surface of the water, which puts them in harm’s way from a boat prop,” Beth says. To protect manatees, FWC has the following tips for vessel operators: • Observe and follow all boating regulatory zone signs. • Wear polarized sunglasses so you can see where manatees are located underwater. • Slow down. Reducing speed gives you a greater chance to avoid manatees and for them to avoid your vessel. • Use marked channels when boating. Channel depth reduces the likelihood of crushing or hitting manatees in shallow waters. “To continue to have manatees for centuries to come, we can all help by keeping an eye out for manatees (and other wildlife) out on the water, by not feeding or providing water to manatees, and keeping our waterways clean of trash and pollution,” says Beth. To report manatee deaths, injuries, harassment, accidents, or ones orphaned or distressed, call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline. 888-404-FWCC (3922), #FWC on cell phones, or text Tip@MyFWC.com. Luxury Electric Surfboard
Ride Waves No Matter What the Surf Report Says
W
ater whips around Chad Knopp as he glides around the bay at the Palm Beach International Boat Show. Sharing the water with a fly board and electric foil, Knopp is almost hard to track as he cuts around the bay at top speed on his YuJet electric surfboard. Jeremy Schneiderman co-founded YuJet back in 2019, and soon put together a team of pro surfers, engineers, investors and business executives to make his goal of designing stylish but eco-friendly water sports accessories. “We’ve worked for years to create a product that can propel powered water sports forward,” says Jeremy. “Our first product to market, the YuJet Surfer, is the culmination of our passion, our experience, and our vision for the future. We wanted to make a product that was easy to ride for every skill level and could deliver the thrill of surfing in just minutes.” The YuJet Surfer is a 100 percent electric, carbon fiber, jet-powered surfboard with no exposed motor, that brings the fun of surfing to anywhere there’s water. No waves required. Learning to ride takes about five minutes and each battery charge provides up to a 40-minute ride time. Riders typically travel at around 16 MPH, but the board can reach top speeds of 24 MPH for an even more thrilling experience. While Chad and the rest of the YuJet sales and marketing team look like they just stepped off the beach, Jeremy is more subdued. His background is in technology and drones, but being based in South Florida and seeing the damage other water toys do to the environment, Jeremy decided to develop a fully-electric toy that anyone could use. “There weren’t many electric options out there, and the future is going electric. We had experience in the drone world before this, so we wanted to take that knowledge of tech a step further and bring it to the water,” he said. YuJet is a relatively large operation for such a small team, but their smaller numbers allow them to put more emphasis on customer service and support. When people have questions about their products, they’ll get an actual person to help them out, not an automated response bot. Watching Chad finish up his time on the water, it was easy to see how thrilling a ride could truly be as he carved around on his knees at top speeds. It’s the “thrill of riding a surfboard without a wave!” boasts Jeremy. With Florida’s notoriously inconsistent surf and mayhem from tourists tearing around on jet skis, it’s easy to see the appeal of gliding through the waters on a YuJet board. Around the World We Go!
W
hen I told people I was going to leave my successful corporate career to buy a sailing catamaran (named Sail La Vie) and sail to the Bahamas, they called me crazy. What I thought was crazy was the number of people who tell you, “You can’t do it” the moment you make the leap of faith to chase after your lifelong dream! What’s crazy is how many people talk about their dreams but never commit to them. What’s crazy is also probably me! With minimal sailing experience, and no previous boat ownership experience, I set sail and didn’t look back. A year later, I’ve lived the best year of my life aboard my sailboat in the beautiful Bahamas. I’ve made a life living off the ocean, teaching freediving, shark education, sustainable spearfishing and connecting with locals throughout the islands. The Bahamas have been an amazing location to dip my toes in this sailboating lifestyle. I’ve made many mistakes, learned many lessons and feel ready for many new adventures! As the new year rolled in, I sailed home with my boyfriend Matt to visit family and do work on my boat. When we got home, we announced our plan for 2021 was to start sailing around the world. Without surprise, the unanimous response I got was, “You’re crazy!” I’d rather be crazy with memories than normal with regrets. Matt and I spent hours looking at wind directions, seasonality, and potential sailing routes. Based on where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see, we decided to sail from Florida to the Bahamas, down the chain of the Bahamian islands, through the Cuba and Haiti pass to Panama, cross the Panama Canal, then over to the Galapagos, French Polynesia and end the year in Tonga. Our goal is to travel to untouched places, off the beaten path, experience the wildlife and learn from the locals. We will be freediving, sustainably spearfishing our protein, diving with marine wildlife, hiking, making bonfires and fully immersing ourselves in every place we go. We also plan to offer the opportunity for guests to join us along the way and take part in the adventure! With the plan in place, it was time to prep the boat. The idea of sailing around the world may sound exciting and sexy, but the prep work that goes

into it, I promise, is not! It takes a lot of time, money and effort. In two weeks time, we had replaced two engines, two sail drives, got a new autopilot, rebonded the boat, got all new rigging and sails, more batteries, a new water maker and stocked the boat with extra jerry cans for fuel, emergency water jugs and food. And don’t forget about safety! We got jacklines, harnesses with 3-point tethers, life vests, man overboard bracelets, emergency position indicating radio beacons, flashlights, foul weather gear, updated the ditch bag and the first aid kit. Sail La Vie is ready for a world tour and so are we. The journey from Florida to the Bahamas started at the end of March and I am excited to share the adventures, lessons and stories along the way. When I tell people we prepped my boat to sail around the world in two weeks time and are leaving for a world tour, they tell me I’m crazy. So what if I am crazy? Ticks, Lyme and Summertime
The Best Defense is Prevention
T
here’s a common myth that Lyme disease is only found in the northeast, and we shouldn’t worry about infection in Florida. This is just one of many misunderstandings that surround this disease. Florida is home to a research expert in tick-borne illness, Kerry Clark, PhD, professor at University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Dr. Clark has studied Lyme and other tick-borne diseases in the southeastern United States for the past 20 years. He proved that two species of ticks in Florida carry Borrelia, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Additionally, his research teams have identified infected ticks on various reptiles and animals besides deer, including certain snakes, lizards, birds, rabbits and the white-footed mouse. Summer is prime time for encountering ticks. The probability of being bitten has grown due to their rapidly expanding numbers. Studies show that warmer-than-normal temperatures can more than quadruple tick reproduction. Moreover, suburban development of agricultural land and forest creates infringement upon surrounding natural habitat which greatly increases human exposure. Should you find a tick embedded in your skin, look online for instructions on how to remove it properly. There is evidence that the bacteria can transmit to humans more rapidly than once assumed, so prompt and precise removal of the tick is essential. Ticks often carry and spread more than one pathogen. In Florida, the most common tick-borne diseases are ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Symptoms of these infections include fever, headache, muscle/joint pain and moderate to severe fatigue which usually start within two weeks of being bitten. The classic bullseye rash appears in some cases, but approximately 40-60 percent of patients who suffer from Lyme never presented with a bullseye rash. If treated immediately with appropriate antibiotics for enough time, many cases of Lyme can be stopped from progressing into persistent Lyme disease. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) developed guidelines for treatment that are outside the traditional infectious disease model. Doctors who follow these guidelines are often referred to as
Lyme-literate Medical Doctors or LLMDs. For acute infection, most LLMDs give 21-30 days of Doxycycline which is more than the typical 10-14 day regimen usually prescribed. Patients on a longer course of initial treatment seem to fare better over time. The best way to prevent Lyme is to avoid being bitten. If you hike or picnic in grassy, wooded areas, it’s best to take precautions. The Florida Department of Health recommends the following: • Use repellant that contains 20-30 percent DEET • Apply permethrin to clothing and gear, wear long sleeves and pants • Walk in the center of paths and trails • Perform tick checks on yourself, your family, and your pets • Shower soon after being in tick habitat • Use veterinarian recommended products to keep ticks off pets • Keep the grass, shrubs and trees near your residence trimmed Call (772) 564-8383 or visit IndianRiverAcupuncture.com for more information. Level Yoga
Feel Better in Your Body
H
ave you ever asked or answered the question, “Why yoga?” Many people new to the practice consider this when taking a class for the first time. While there is a wealth of scientifically-backed data confirming a myriad of benefits, some people may have preconceived notions of what yoga is. Yoga is many things to many different people. Some students practice to flow through a rigorous hot class, while others like to deeply stretch their bodies. Some might not have a physical practice; they focus on meditation or breathing. No matter how broad or specific your practice is, there’s a place for you in yoga. One common reason people take up yoga is to simply feel better in their bodies. Personal testimonies from students about yoga’s impact on their lives is incredibly powerful and often the most effective way to convince someone to try yoga. Meet Paul, a 43-year-old student who embarked on his yoga journey in January 2020. Paul underwent cervical spinal surgery on C3, 4, 5 and 6, known as anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. His inspiration to start yoga was to gain flexibility and strength in his neck and core. His family inspired and eagerly supported his goals. Paul discussed his flexibility and strength concerns with several personal trainers, who all directed him towards yoga. Since Paul’s post-surgical goals were specific and unique, his yoga journey began with private one-on-one instruction with Level Yoga’s owner, Amanda Steadman. Working privately with a yoga teacher can be a great option for students with injuries, post-operation limitations, or specific goals. A private

teacher and student setting allows for conversation, personalized attention and tailoring to the student’s desires and needs. Private sessions can be a great introduction to yoga, supplement to attending group classes, or your primary yoga practice. It did not take long for Paul to experience the benefits of his newfound yoga practice. He attests to yoga’s positive impact. “Since I have been practicing yoga, I have noticed more flexibility and mobility in my body along with more focus and full body awareness,” Paul says. He continues to reap the practice’s benefits every time he unrolls his yoga mat. As an active man, Paul wishes more people, especially men his age could experience the life-changing benefits of yoga. “My advice to anyone on the fence of trying a yoga class would be to start out with a private session,” Paul shares. “Yoga is one of the toughest workouts I’ve ever done. Amanda took the intimidation out of the yoga and worked with me so that I have a comprehensive understanding of each position and what group of muscles I am stretching and working on by adjusting my body to be in the most effective alignment for the pose.” Paul’s inspirational journey is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to try yoga. Whether it’s strength, flexibility, or peace you seek, there’s a place for you to practice at Level Yoga. We offer a variety of yoga modalities and truly have something for everyone. The Anchored Soul
T
he storms it takes to reach that place where you are able to internally tap into a sense of inner peace and come to the realization that it all happens within… Navigating life. Deep stuff. The experience is very much an exploration requiring a curious mind, a tad of resilience, and marked by a whole lot of becoming. In the journey, we come across rough seas and epic waves. These waters, after all, are not for the faint of heart. Possibly, at times, we feel lost in the vastness of it all or confused by the swells taking us in different directions. And still, we do not sink. We manage to keep our ship afloat and our heads above water 100 percent of the time, because we all have what it takes or else we would not be here. We acknowledge the beauty encountered along the way. The crews we meet in our travels. The vibrant and varying colors of where we land and sail to next. The glorious sunrises, sublime sunsets and wondrous horizons. The touch of the breeze and where the wind takes us. Those islands where we have loved and where we feel alive. This journey… and its depth. We learn the ropes and adjust the sails. Once more, we succumb to the urge that calls us to those depths, to seek adventure and the treasures to be found. As captains of our ship, we learn to read the signs, follow the omens and lead with our own compass. We tell our tales only to recount what has brought us all the way here in aims to pass on some wisdom to those less seasoned in the tricks of the trade. We share how those storms transformed us. When we were in it, we thought we’d sink, but then we didn’t. We recount how we became one with ourselves. As we reflect on our travels, we realize maybe the whole purpose of the journey is to return to ourselves, to be in tune with it all, and learn how to be an anchored soul navigating the uncertain, sometimes stormy, but beautiful and bountiful waters of life. Round Island Riverside Park
A Self-Guided Nature Therapy Experience
R
ound Island Riverside Park is a Vero Beach gem. Located at 2200 S. A1A, this park is teeming with wildlife. Be on the lookout for a variety of birds, including roseate spoonbills, herons, pelicans, osprey, cormorants; you might even spot manatees and dolphins! For peak wildlife conditions, go at sunrise or at dusk. For a boost of “Vitamin Sea,” right across the street is Round Island Oceanside Park. Both parks have restrooms and picnic tables if you’d like to bring a picnic and make a day of it. Between the two, you could watch the sun rise on the beach or watch it set on the Indian River Lagoon. Round Island Riverside has a .4 mile out-and-back trail that stretches across the island from the canoe/kayak launch and through the Australian pine and mangrove forest to a dock on the lagoon. A side trail takes you to the observation tower. This is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the healing powers of nature. If you’d like to deepen your nature and forest therapy practice, here are some invitations for a self-guided experience. Be sure to put your phone on “forest bathing mode” a.k.a. airplane mode for a distraction-free walk. Sometimes you have to disconnect to reconnect. Starting from the main boat ramp on the southwest side of the parking lot, take a stroll on the boardwalk that hugs the mangroves. Find a spot to sit or stand along the boardwalk and spend 15 minutes or more quietly reflecting. Pause to acknowledge what senses are awakened. When you’re done, continue to the opposite end of the boardwalk where it comes out at the trail that leads to the canoe/kayak launch. Proceed left to the bridge. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths at the top of the bridge. Spend some time enjoying the view, then begin a gentle wander down the trail towards the lagoon, exploring very slowly, quietly noticing what’s in motion in the natural world around you. Your mind will probably drift, and that’s completely natural. When it does, gently bring your attention back to what’s in motion. Feel free to stop and tune into anything that captures your attention. How slow should you go? See if you can spend 15 minutes or more on the journey from the bridge to the lagoon dock (staying straight on the trail). When you get to the dock, find a spot to sit quietly for 20 minutes, gazing out at the lagoon. What are you noticing? Share with a friend or journal your thoughts about your nature therapy experience. For a more in-depth experience, sign up for a remotely guided forest bathing and nature therapy experience and join me live via Zoom. Participate from Round Island Riverside Park if you have adequate cell service, or from your very own yard. The Good Times, They’re the Gold
Reflecting on the Silver Linings of 2020

hen one imagines their wedding day they wouldn’t typically think of all guests covering their smiles with masks, sitting six feet apart, and having to “un-invite” your favorite people due to safe capacity limitations. However, what you do learn is that all of those things are not the memories that stick with you. When Andrew and I were put between a rock and a hard place on whether or not to continue on with our wedding during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, things were immediately put into perspective. The inevitable wedding stress was heightened beyond belief, and like many other brides and grooms who were right there with us, we really did not have much choice but to move forward. This “non-traditional” era that we are all in brought the unknown not only to us, but also to our vendors, planners, even the venue itself all the way until the very day of the wedding. It certainly wasn’t an easy decision to make, but we decided to focus on the things that really mattered most. Charleston, South Carolina has always had a special place in my heart. and I always knew it’s where I wanted to get married. We forged on with planning our wedding outside at Lowndes Grove overlooking the beautiful Ashley River. We were blessed with a once in a lifetime sunset and simultaneous moonrise that took everyone’s breath away! It was in that moment when the champagne started flowing and the sunset captured everyone’s eyes that every ounce of pre-wedding stress faded away and allowed us to be so grateful for this day. Although our wedding wasn’t what we initially imagined and planned for, it ended up being exactly what was meant to be. So many memories were illuminated after realizing how lucky we were to even have a wedding in October of 2020. This unusual time has certainly taught many of us to cherish what truly matters most. Although we endured many changes and roadblocks along the way, in the end it was better than it could have ever been. Understanding your biases may help you avoid questionable calls in the heat of the financial moment.
Navigating Market Volatility
Understand How Biases Can Affect Investment Decisions
W
hen it comes to your finances, "go with your gut" might not be the wisest adage to follow. In fact, it may work against you, particularly in periods of market turbulence. Before jumping to conclusions about your finances, consider what biases may be at work beneath your conscious radar. Recency bias refers to the tendency for recent events to have a stronger influence on your decisions than more distant events. For example, when the market was in the midst of an 11-year bull run, you may have increased your investments in equities, hoping to take advantage of any further gains. By contrast, if you were severely burned by market performance during the past several weeks, you may be hesitant about continuing or increasing your investments once the market settles down. Consider that neither of these perspectives may be entirely rational given that investment decisions should be based on your individual goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. Loss-aversion bias describes the tendency to fear losses more than celebrate equivalent gains. For example, you may experience joy at the thought of finding yourself $5,000 richer, but the thought of losing $5,000 might provoke a far greater fear. Loss aversion could cause you to hold on to a losing investment too long, with the fear of turning a paper loss into a real loss. In a down market, of course, most of your investments may show paper losses, so you might consider whether you are holding on to an investment that would be wise to sell within the context of your overall strategy. It's only natural to be concerned when the market drops. But expecting volatility and having a sound financial strategy in place may be the best
defense when events roil the markets. This might also help prevent you from making investment decisions influenced by biases. If you think you might be basing your decisions on biases rather than facts, contact us. We can offer an important third-party perspective. All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and there is no guarantee that any investment strategy will be successful. Although there is no assurance that working with a financial professional will improve investment results, a professional can evaluate your objectives and available resources and help you consider appropriate long-term financial strategies.

heels & Keels of Vero Beach Foundation provides funding to selected organizations whose activities strive to improve the lives of children and adults within the Treasure Coast community, including organizations less able to secure funding from other organizations. Wheels & Keels was an idea, started back in 2009, by Gavin Ruotolo, George O’Malley and Vince DeTurris. After viewing world class Antique Car and Boat Shows in south Florida, they worked to bring the concept to the Vero Beach area. With the support of The Moorings Yacht & Country Club and Craig Lopes and his staff, they found a place to try out the idea. In 2009 with less than 50 classic cars in the Club’s parking lot, along with four trailered boats and a few yachts at the docks, we held our first SHOW. In 2015, we incorporated as Wheels & Keels Foundation Inc., 501(c) (3) charitable corporations. That year, the cocktail party, the dinner, and the auction generated record revenue that we again divided among our charities. Since our beginning in 2009, through 2020, The Wheels & Keels Foundation has generated and donated to our charities a total of $360,000.00! With the support of the community, the volunteers, and our sponsors, we trust WHEELS & KEELS 2021 will be a banner year with the combined help of all that make it happen.

Since the inception of FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, our scientific researchers have dedicated their efforts to intimately understanding the function of fragile ecosystems along the coast and in the ocean. They examine environmental responses to pressures like coastal land development, nutrient and plastics pollution, ocean acidification, warming temperatures and overfishing. Study results are essential for policy makers as they develop sound conservation, management and restoration strategies.
