Gone Boating

I

love boating! From cruising at sunset to offshore fishing on the weekends, boating life is my kind of life! I’ve always been drawn to the water. It’s my happy place. There’s something very special about being on or near water. Cruising out of the inlet early on a Saturday morning with the first glimpse of sunshine sparkling like little diamonds on the glistening sea is pure magic. In this issue, we partnered with Pursuit Boats to showcase living like a local! Pursuit Boats is one of many boat manufacturers here on the Treasure Coast. It was a pleasure spending the day on the water, exploring the many adventures to be found here. It is truly a boaters’ paradise. From inshore to offshore fishing, or just anchoring up at a sandbar or spoil island to float the day away, the opportunities are truly endless. You can even take your boat to dinner to many of the local restaurants. Just living our best life, here in paradise. What are you waiting for? Let's go boating!

Cruising into a new year,

this is us

As the chaos of the holiday season approaches, don’t forget to take a step back, breathe, and appreciate the little things in life. We often get so wrapped up in the commotion, that we overlook how fortunate we are to live in this quiet, little beach town! For this issue, we fully embraced the beauty of being on the boat. That refreshing fall breeze is like no other when cruising parallel to the sandy shore! Don’t forget to mark your calendars and join us at American Icon Brewery on November 11th from 5-7PM. Not only will we be celebrating the newest issue, but we will also be showing our gratitude to the veterans who fought for our country. We hope the remainder of your year is filled with love and appreciation. We’ll see you next year! Cheers,

Live like a

local…

just add

water!

Being surrounded by the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, it’s hard not to fall in love with our waterways. Boating is a huge part of the Treasure Coast lifestyle and the opportunities are endless. It’s no wonder boat manufacturing is a big industry in St. Lucie County. Pursuit Boats has been a community partner since 1983 when the plant was first constructed. It’s always fun to see the new Pursuit boats out on our waterways and I feel a sense of pride knowing they were made right here on the Treasure Coast! Recently, we decided to collaborate with Pursuit to showcase local life on our waterways. We tested Pursuit’s new S 358 Sport. It was so much fun to be chased by a helicopter offshore (our cover shot) and to share with them our secret little spots on the lagoon. Whether you’re a weekend boater or a seasoned professional, there is always something to do on the water. Fishing offshore is one of my favorite pastimes. There’s something about going way out into the deep sea, seeing a beautiful blank horizon and barely seeing shore. If the weather cooperates and we make it to the Gulf Stream, it’s even better! There are so many beautiful shades of blue... heaven!

They call our shores the Treasure Coast for a reason! Along our coastline in just 10-15 feet of water is an amazing network of underwater reefs. A favorite pastime of both residents and visitors is snorkeling, diving or spearfishing from the boat. Right now, it’s lobster season, so be careful cruising close to shore. Always be cautious of divers in the water—they could be near a boat or diving along the shore and might not always be near a dive flag.

The Fort Pierce Inlet,

located between the

Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway, offers endless opportunities for boating adventures. The water is turquoise blue and there are little spoil islands everywhere that you can moor up to for a day of fun. On most weekends, the place to be is anchored up at the sandbar or The Cove after a long day of boating or fishing. Little Jim Bait & Tackle offers bait, live music, cold drinks, and the best fish and shrimp tacos. The best part is you can go by boat, kayak or paddleboard.

Spending time on the boat is a great way to reconnect with friends and family after a busy week. Pack a picnic, some ice cold beverages, and discover a new place to watch a sunset. Take a cruise after work and just enjoy being outside in nature, breathing the fresh, salty air. It’s exhilarating!

Our family pets

are a big part of our life, by land and

sea. They love getting outside and taking a ride on the boat, ears flapping in the wind and noses in the air. There are a lot of great sandbars that dogs can run freely and splash in the water, play catch, and just enjoy time with their humans. Disconnecting and being in nature offers so many mental and physical health benefits for us and our pets. Just breathing the salt air, listening to the sound of the waves lapping the shore, and getting a little warm sunshine is so refreshing.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or you just enjoy throwing out a line to see what hits, the Indian River Lagoon offers a variety of species of fish to catch or release. Locals look forward to the great mullet run every year, providing plenty of bait for fishing adventures, if you’re good with a cast net and spotting the schools. The winter months bring snook, tarpon and many other great fishing opportunities, along with stone crab season, too! Be sure to keep your fishing license current, check local regulations, and get the necessary permits if you plan to catch and keep.

Chasing New Levels of High Tech Photography

B

orn and raised on the east coast of South Africa, Marc grew up around the Indian Ocean. The warm sub-tropical waters played a big role in shaping who he would later become. After being certified as a scuba diver at 15, Marc served as a South African Navy clearance diver, then a multi-agency scuba instructor, traveling around the world on and under the water. During the late 80s, while serving at the Navy Diving School as an assistant instructor, Marc found an old Nikonos camera system in the stores. After using Navy time, Navy cameras, Navy film and Navy darkrooms, a camera was never to leave his side, eventually becoming a full-time career choice in 1996. After many years of editorial and commercial stills photography, Marc finally made the shift into moving images and commercial film production. Taking his decades of technical experience, Marc has been able to translate that unique perspective through the stills lens into telling stories for his clients with film. He has embraced the technology around camera movement and image stabilization in the most difficult of situations, on water and in the air. As a camera operator, Marc is at home in a helicopter, driving his dynamic high-speed style, or underwater, managing the complexities that it brings to the set, as well as everywhere in between. "The greatest lesson I learned over time behind the camera is relationships, with film crews and especially with the clients. Being part of their vision team and being able to explain what the gear can do for the look and feel of their product is the biggest asset I can bring to the table. I pride myself in being solution orientated and continually being able to surprise clients with new ideas and looks," says Marc. Marc is also very much at home in the postproduction environment, shepherding the projects through edit, color grading, sound design, to final mix and master delivery, should that be needed by the client. For almost a decade, Marc maintained a downtown gallery in his hometown of Morehead City. Editorial and advertising credits include National Geographic, Marlin, Yachting, Power & Motor Yacht, Boating, Southern Boating, Sea, Yachting Art, Passage Maker, Outboard Magazine, Outside Traveler, Africa Geographic, BlueWater, Alert Diver, Tide, Out There, Guy Harvey Magazine, Voyages de Pêche, and many more. Commercial clients include TUUCI, Ocean Alexander Yachts, Tiara Yachts, Pursuit Boats, Sunbrella, Restoration Hardware, Shearline Boatworks, Mark Willis Customs, Qurich Foods, Tombras Agency, and Basecamp Creative. A Veteran's Perspective

Serving for the Good of a Nation

H

oward Grover has been the head of Service for Jetson TV & Appliances for nine years. Grover was handpicked by John Jetson, a U.S. Air Force Veteran of Vietnam; the former E4 says that he is grateful for every day that he served in the Army. “I learned so much, I grew up in the Army,” Grover tells me. Drafted in 1969, he served through 1971 and thinks more young people should sign up. Rita Evans was born in Portsmouth Naval Hospital and spent most of her life in the Navy, retiring after 21 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer. The Navy was in her blood; her father and grandfathers served, and now her son, not to mention her husband who retired as a Master Chief. Joining the Navy was a way to make Rita’s father proud and to continue the family tradition of providing service to their country. She feels that Veteran’s Day is a day of gratitude for those who have sacrificed so much. Since retiring, Rita has noticed that people are grateful to those who have served. Whether it’s telling a veteran who is wearing a hat ‘thank you for your service’ or giving to veteran’s causes, she feels the gratitude. The former Commander of the Next Generation Vets in Indian River County served in the Marine Corps from 1994-1999. Jason Patzer says that joining the Corps was the best thing he did in his life. He was a confused 30

child, often getting into trouble, but the Marines taught him independence and gave him “a family like you can never imagine,” he states. Each Veteran’s Day, he regards as his Thanksgiving, and with it comes a range of emotions: somber, sobering and the feeling of time passing as we lose the voices, wisdom and stories of WWII, Korean and Vietnam Vets. It doesn’t matter what branch of the military they served in; they are all family. A part of a mission, for the good of a nation. This coming Veteran’s Day, Thursday, November 11th, be a part of the Welcome Back Veterans Celebration at Jetson’s Fort Pierce from 12PM to 3PM. Live music, BBQ, veteran’s displays, and classic cars. All are welcome. Also on Veteran’s Day, from 5PM to 7PM, Vero Beach Portfolio Magazine will be having their November/December Launch Party at American Icon Brewery. Join them to celebrate the latest issue and show appreciation to our veterans. Jetson TV & Appliances and Vero Beach Portfolio Magazine honors our veterans. Homeschooling

Fly a Kite, Drink Tea, and Travel the World

O

ne of the many advantages homeschooling offers parents is the ability to create moments for learning that touch all five senses and are free from busy work or classroom monotony. Learning can be way more fun outside; singing Latin memory songs, while flying a kite or squished together on the couch with a heartwarming story, sipping tea while traipsing the continent through times and places long gone with characters like Gilgamesh, or skip counting 9’s with a sea pen in the sand, accompanied by the ocean spray. How about a scientific invertebrate hunt at the beach, while creating silly sentences using different prepositions? As a homeschool parent, you can take any subject and find a way to make it more absorbing. All homeschool parents can relate to the pressure to get through material and workbooks. It's easy to judge success by the number of worksheets our child has accomplished, but often the conventional method can lack the

32

November-December 2021

adventure in discovering new information. Of course, it is often necessary to teach in a traditional format, but by making it the exception rather than the rule, we give our children a gift: the gift of the joy of learning. By putting our children in the way of the beautiful and wonderful, we stimulate creativity and a desire to learn and understand. Learning away from a desk or worksheet also helps break up the day, get the wiggles out, and easily resets those tear-filled mornings. It’s easy to forget to incorporate beauty and fun in our days and sometimes, let's be honest, it's not as convenient, but the moments together are precious, and the depth of learning is fruitful. So, the next time you go to pull out another workbook, remember you can always go fly a kite, drink tea, and travel the world, too! Written and photography provided by Olivia Assaf

Splash Friendly Bags

W

e love Florida life! We are Christina and Adam King and while there wasn’t much about 2020 we had any control over, we saw last year as the perfect opportunity for a designer and a photographer to work together and start the family business we had always put off for “someday.” Living on a small barrier island means everything gets wet, sand is inevitable, and some of the best days on the water turn into fun nights out on the town. My goal was to design a line of boho-chic, splash friendly bags that take you from the beach to the street. Perfect for Florida living! Our Marloru Sun-day bags have a cross body strap to keep your hands free, a wide-toothed zip top to keep everything in place (especially useful for those boat days), and of course it’s all made from the perfect, splash friendly material. Your bag gets wet, your stuff stays dry! It’s been incredibly rewarding to see a dream realized over the course of one year, but maybe even more exciting is that through Marloru, we’ve been able to sponsor a group of

Gifts of Heritage

W

hat does it mean to have heritage? I come from a long line of beachcombers and oyster slurpers. My mom grew up in the wood shingled house at the end of Beachcomber Lane and I spent a full childhood of long, lazy summers hunting for sharks’ teeth and treasures with cousins and friends on those shores. We gleefully salvaged all sorts of washed-up items that could have been discounted as useless, had they not voyaged the sea and returned home with a story to tell. Sun bleached, sanded, and barnacled, these artifacts were revered by generations of my family, especially my grandparents, Millie, and George Bunnell, who adamantly believed in the value of things that can’t be recreated. It was this belief that led her to champion saving some of the original buildings that line our historic downtown, now providing our community a unique identity and shared sense of place. This same belief led him to create the Environmental Learning Center, in the hopes of inspiring enduring stewardship of the Indian River Lagoon. I left Vero Beach after high school and returned with my husband and daughter nearly 20 years later. Competing work deadlines and travel schedules had wreaked havoc on our little family. We were adrift, worn down, and windblown, and unsure how to salvage the life we had built. Little by little, this place grows around you like mangrove roots, gently folding you in. When I started my business earlier this year with a nod to my salty, windswept

childhood, I was delighted to find a vibrant network of creative small business owners in Vero. Women like Julia Calahan (Calahan & Co.), Brittany Pittman (Color Me Pretty), Robyn Berry (Vero Heritage, Inc.) and so many others welcomed me, sharing their networks, collaborating with me, offering advice, and making those first crucial purchases. These women lifted me out of the sand, dusted me off, and helped me find a new sense of purpose. What does it mean to have heritage? In the beginning, it’s the place and people you come from—the ones who inspire you and send you out into the world. What I have learned this year is that heritage is also the place and people you come home to find. bumruk

For the Beach Bum at Heart

I

t all started in May of 2020, when I first heard that my cousin Will's summer internship, with a non-profit on Nantucket, had been cancelled due to COVID-19. My roommate had just moved out of my extra bedroom in West Palm Beach, so I asked Will if he wanted to leave Virginia and spend the summer in sunny South Florida. It was an easy sell. A few weeks later, Will made the drive down and moved in. Throughout our childhood, we would often spend family vacations together at our grandparent’s place in Rhode Island. Whether we were on our grandfather's sailboat, spending the day on Narragansett Bay, or back at the house shucking corn for the annual clambake, chances are we were brainstorming different crazy business ideas together. Whether it was a fitness app one-year, electric Heelys the next, or a shaved ice stand at the beach, we would spend hours discussing how we’d take this new business idea from 0 to 100. At the time of course, we were both in school full-time in different states. So, these ideas were never brought to fruition, but it was clear we were both interested in starting something of our own one day. The hours I was working for my day job as an airline pilot had taken a drastic cut since airline travel was all but halted, and Will was just starting to look for work. So, we had an unusual amount of free time on our hands. With the world being shut down and social distancing measures in place, bike rides to the beach became part of our daily routine. It wasn't long until we realized our time at the beach would be much more enjoyable if we had a comfortable place to sit and some beach essentials with us once we got there. Not wanting to resort to driving, our bike rides continued and before long, we had an idea. We wanted to combine the convenience of a backpack with the function of a floor chair, which we remembered using on our grandfather's sailboat years ago. The idea for the bumruk was born. From there we ordered a few different floor chairs from amazon, cut them up, tossed out the oversized foam, then brought the remaining frame to a local welder to reshape into the more compact design we needed. After researching and learning about all different types of foam and outdoor fabrics, we eventually rebuilt it and covered it in neoprene from a local wetsuit manufacturer. After adding the straps from a backpack on one side and the actual pack on the other, we had our first home-built prototype. For the last nine months, we’ve been working our bums off daily: sourcing a manufacturer, testing, and improving upon each new revision, and building a loyal following of beach bums that share in our desire for breezier beach days (over 1,000 bumruks have already been sold via pre-order). Manufacturing is finally complete and our first container full of bumruks has just arrived at our fulfillment center in West Palm. We couldn’t be happier with the result. If you’re a beach bum at heart, check us out online. We look forward to seeing you at the beach.

A Little SoulShine

A

Local, Handmade Jewelry

Little SoulShine is a small, local, handmade jewelry business here in beautiful Vero Beach. A Little SoulShine began years ago, as a homeschool lesson with my kids. We made some macramé bracelets and couldn't stop creating. My daughter and I created together for a few years and sold our products at local markets. That's a time in my life that is one of my favorites to look back on. I am now the sole creator and mostly sell on Etsy. My daughter still has a hand in things, as she is beginning to take over the social media and online marketing, and I couldn't be happier about that. We have an unbreakable bond and it's a blessing to put her skills to use in whatever way she excels. I love working with natural elements found along the shorelines, like tumbled sea glass that becomes frosted from the waves and sand, tiny, detailed shells, and rounded soft beach stones. All the treasures I use have been personally found along the shores of east coast Florida. I also have an unstoppable attraction to all things colorful and try to throw a splash of color in whenever I can, or just go full rainbow on some pieces!

I have never believed that material objects buy happiness. I do believe however, that we all like to feel special and like to make others feel special. My creations are just a small way to do that. True soul shine comes from deep within, but I am honored every single time I get to be a part of a gift that has meaning to someone, or simply throws a little sunshine their way. Shine on! Brewmaster, Jesse Robles

Getting the Buzz on With American Icon Brewery

J

esse Robles knows beer. He’s the brewmaster at American Icon Brewery. As if the building itself wasn’t reason enough to check the place out, the unique ever-changing craft beer options, along with great food will keep you coming back. Thirsty for more? Read on! Q: When did you discover you had a passion for creating craft beer? A: At 19, I started homebrewing and quickly developed a passion for it and realized I could make a career out of it. Creating new beers keeps things fresh and exciting, it never gets boring. The craft beer drinker is always looking for something new. Q: Where did you go to school to learn how to brew? A: I first studied at Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, eventually getting my degree at Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany, in a program known as the World Brewing Academy, graduating in 2013. Q: How did you end up at American Icon? A: After moving to Florida, I wanted to get back into being more creative and having creative control over the brewing process. Luckily, AIB was looking for a brewmaster. Q: What has led you to your recent success? A: Technique and attention to detail is the foundation for success in brewing. If you do all the little things right, everything else will fall into place. Great beer needs to be drinkable, not just a crazy concept or a unique label. Drinkability comes from following the science and the technique. Having

a great team surrounding me at AIB has also been a crucial part of our success, it is definitely a team effort. Q: What is your vision for the brewery moving forward? A: Right now, we are just trying to stay consistent with our quality and build a strong customer base that recognizes us for that quality. We are building our brand one area at a time as we increase our distribution footprint and as more people are getting familiar with our great products. The ultimate goal is to get as much of our beer to as many beer lovers as we can! Q: What are you most passionate about when it comes to brewing? A: Definitely the technique and the science behind the process. It was the science of brewing and fermentation that really pulled me into the craft. It is still the foundation for the quality of our products today. Q: What is your favorite beer that you don’t brew yourself? A: I love a good IPA, as I'm a true hophead at heart, but lager beer is the pinnacle of quality brewing. Q: What is your favorite beer that you brew? A: Our Factory Pilsner or Oktoberfest is my favorite. I take a lot of pride in the lagers we brew as a reflection of focusing on little details and technique. You can't hide any mistakes in a lager! Give a Girl the Gift of Education

T

he state of Jammu and Kashmir in India is in the crosshairs of a geographically challenging location. Bordered and claimed by Pakistan and China, the area has been plagued with frequent terrorist attacks, lack of infrastructure, and now the coronavirus pandemic. Hanging in the balance is Tania, a high school junior who enjoys drawing and learning about science in her free time. She has been earning excellent grades and working hard to attend college, where she hopes to study medicine to become a doctor. Tania is a scholar supported by Education: Access, a nonprofit organization that was founded in Vero Beach in 2014. Education: Access grants scholarships to girls at risk of dropping out of school in Jammu and Kashmir, so that instead of being forced into arranged marriages these girls can become doctors, accountants, engineers, and so much more. Our program is currently sponsoring forty-nine girls in high school and college. The girls must undergo a streamlined application process, where they are evaluated on two main criteria: risk of drop out and academic achievement. Once the girls are selected, our program coordinator on the ground is responsible for extensive follow-up and consistent support, ensuring the girls attend classes, maintain high grades, and receive emotional support. All the girls in the program are from families that live below India’s

poverty line, $1,500/year, which comes out to about $4/day in family income. Lack of access to education for females is a leading indicator of generational poverty. The COVID-19 pandemic is only exacerbating the issue, as India has struggled to contain the spread. Schools have been shut down, and millions of children have returned to the workforce to perform hard manual labor. Many have lost one or even both parents, and as a result have virtually no chance of returning to school to finish their education. This cycle of poverty can be broken through smart investments in education. For just $15/month, you can make a massive change to an individual’s life trajectory. Instead of being another forgotten statistic, Tania might invent a future vaccine. A more modest prediction is that as a doctor, Tania will be in a much better position to help others than if she is a high school dropout. Despite all the adversity in her life, Tania is not giving up on our world. She still believes, as does our team at Education: Access, that small acts of kindness add up, and that there is a better future if we are willing to work for it. @chelseasgourmet Written by Luna Rivera Photography by Suntosh Suni

Always Chasing the Sun

very few months, I find myself reflecting on the path my life has taken. It’s unclear if this is some therapeutic subconscious action or a mental exercise that I use to guide future decisions. Either way, there is always one constant theme: family. For generations, my family has been involved in the hospitality business in one form or another. I spent much of my 20s and 30s in the corporate world but found my true passion in the creation of tequila, after my first trip to Jalisco, Mexico in late 2016. Over the next 3 years, my partnership with an incredible Mexican distilling family allowed me the opportunity to develop a truly unique product. Through experimentation and countless samplings, we were able to create the world’s first Hi/Lo blend of tequila. The perfect blend of highlands and lowlands agave created a more balanced and widely appealing flavor profile than any other on the market. It was what I considered the “perfect tequila.” As we began testing the tequila in the market, we found that we could capture the palettes of novice consumers, as well as those of dedicated aficionados. In 2019, we won our first award at the San Francisco World Spirits competition and Costa Tequila was born. Then, COVID-19 struck. Our northeast launch, expansion, and momentum were disrupted as on-premises closures happened at a catastrophic rate. As

an effort to keep the business afloat, my family and I moved to Vero Beach, Florida, where my wife Courtney grew up, to expand our footprint. A chance meeting with Philip Busch and the Southern Eagle Distributing team led to a partnership on the Treasure Coast that would broaden the scope of our company. As partners, we have spent the last year placing Costa Tequila on the shelves of countless locations. Furthermore, our collective success has given us access to markets across the country. I am happy to say that you can find Costa Tequila in 7 different states, including Florida, with four more coming online by early next year. Today, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for the support provided by our partners Southern Eagle Distributing and the Vero Beach/Treasure Coast communities. Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to survive. While we can’t distill our tequila locally and it is impossible for me to call Costa Tequila a “local business,” I can say the Vero Beach/Treasure Coast communities and Southern Eagle Distributing have made us feel like family. To that, I say thank you. @costatequila Written by Stephen Gavula III Photography by Alyssa Tranchilla

Breaking Bread

Butter + Twist

G

rowing up in Indonesia meant our bread had to be homemade. I was always excited when I would come to the table and see it was set with spaghetti and a large loaf of homemade herbed bread my mom would make, accompanied by small plates of oil and vinegar. My family would sit together and tear off a chunk of the bread to dip in the oil. I'm certain we all ended up eating far more bread than we would have if we cut the bread with a knife, but we won't talk about that now. I enjoyed the process then and look back on the experience with just as much fondness. It was these experiences that I believe largely contributed to where I am today. Feeding people is my love language. I do enjoy the extra touches that go into making my creations beautiful, but there’s nothing like the moment when someone takes their first bite of my bread—the look on their face, the sounds they make—it makes all the hard work worth it. As much as I enjoy baking, I enjoy sharing the things I bake with other people even more. On an otherwise ordinary day, not that long ago, I was craving homemade bread. I didn’t have everything the recipe called for, but I improvised and created a loaf that I was pretty proud of. It was, however, massive so I brought it to work to share with my friends. After the first bite one of them said, “I would literally pay you money to make me this bread again!” At that moment, Butter + Twist was born. I started an Instagram account and by the end of the week I realized I had way more orders than I would be able to hand knead. I borrowed a friend's kitchen aid and soon after bought my own with the profit from my first few loaves. As I am still a full-time business student, I bake the bread out of my apartment. I am so appreciative of all the support I have gotten so far in this journey. I cannot wait to see where Butter + Twist goes. @butterandtwist

Trend Forecasters

Predicting the Next "In" Design Trends

M

uch like with fashion, interior design trends can be somewhat ephemeral. What was “in” last year may be very much “out” this year. “Trend Forecasters” work with design companies to help them shape their upcoming product lines. While these kinds of positions might seem frivolous to us members of the proletariat, these individuals help decide what aesthetic choices will be “in” in the future. If you walk into a furniture store or read a home design magazine, you’ll see the real-life applications of their seemingly frivolous daily work. So, how do trendsetters make these choices? Magic 8 ball? Actually, a large portion of what they do is talk to us average schlubs to learn more about our lifestyles and aesthetic preferences. This is evident if you look at the most recent trend forecast for interiors: the ubiquitous shades of grey that dominated interior design as of late are being replaced with warmer, cozier shades. When quarantined in grey homes last year, folks started to feel a little uninspired, and people are feeling the need for some warmer, more uplifting color choices. Not ready to leave grey behind completely? You can split the difference and go with “greige” which is, as the name implies, a grey and beige blend. If you want to kick grey to the curb, start with your walls. My recommendation when changing the color scheme in your home, is to pick a wall where you can let your paint choice colors hang out for a few days. Paint small squares of 3 or 4 color choices on the wall and give yourself time to look at them at various times of the day as the light changes. A color that might look great in morning light could look less so in the evening. As always, your own preferences are most important. If grey gives you the warm fuzzies, keep it! I promise the trend police won’t come for you, and if they do, send them my way. I have a bone to pick with them about all those avocado-colored appliances in the 70s. Shoreline Plantings

Essential for Our Environment

S

horeline living is part of life on the Treasure Coast. The Fall season brings the mullet run, the return of seasonal residents, the end of hurricane season, and king tides. While the return of bait fish and part-time residents contribute to our livelihood, hurricanes and high tides can create havoc to our shorelines. Whether you live on the ocean, Indian River Lagoon, or anywhere in our community, what grows on the shoreline is important to our entire ecosystem, providing habitat and essential erosion protection. The dune is the upland habitat that provides shoreline protection for those who live on or near the ocean. A well-established dune will protect beachfront properties from hurricane storm surges and high tides. The key element to holding a dune in place is the root systems of the vegetation. Since the dune is hot, dry, sandy, and salty, it takes very hardy native plants to establish a dune. Plants that thrive in these conditions include sea oats, sea grapes, cordgrass, muhly grasses, beach sunflower, railroad vine, and saw palmetto. Different plants should be used at different levels of the dune and planted in varieties to create a thriving ecosystem. Flowers, grasses, sea oats and vines should be closer to the ocean, while hardwoods and palms should be planted in more upland locations. Temporary irrigation is often required for new plantings, but once established, dune vegetation does not need to be irrigated and will flourish.

Lagoon shorelines in their natural state are mostly defined with mangroves. On the Indian River Lagoon, the three species of mangrove— red, black, and white—create their own aquatic habitats through an extensive above-ground and below-ground root system. This root system provides shoreline stability and protects the land from storm surges, high tides, and wave action created by boats. Every effort should be made to maintain healthy mangroves along the shoreline. Trimming should only be done by licensed professionals and disturbed areas should be replanted with mangrove seedlings. Red mangroves are those that live closest to the water. Upland from them are black and white mangroves. Plants that thrive near the lagoon are cocoplum, Simpson’s stopper, green buttonwood, and sea oxeye daisy. These will require irrigation during installation, but very little water thereafter. Before you embark on any shoreline project, consult local regulations in your area. Different local, state, and federal agencies manage our shorelines. A knowledgeable engineer can advise on permitting. Proper plantings along our waterways will protect our community, add to the health of our ecosystem, and help preserve our coastal lifestyle. Marking Half a Century

Five Decades of Using Ocean Science to Better the World

F

AU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is celebrating 50 years of groundbreaking research and exploration to address the critical issues facing the oceans and impacting human health and well-being. Founded in 1971, then named as Harbor Branch Foundation (HBF) and later as Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, the 144-acre campus along the Indian River Lagoon became a part of FAU in 2007 to expand its research, education and outreach efforts. Now, FAU Harbor Branch currently conducts about one-third of FAU’s research activity, in five key areas: ocean and human health, aquaculture innovation and food security, technological innovation and national defense and marine ecosystem conservation. The makeup consists of more than 200 scientists, engineers, educators, staff and students. From developing new cancer therapies, to working on cutting edge aquaculture techniques for global food security, to tackling toxic algal blooms, the mission of FAU Harbor Branch is simple: Ocean Science for a Better World®. “We want to help the world,” said Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., executive director of FAU Harbor Branch. “More than 70% of the Earth’s surface is ocean. Our weather, our food, our very lives are dependent on the ocean.” Part of that mission includes outreach and education efforts to foster the next generation of ocean stewards, as well as training future scientists through pre-collegiate, collegiate and graduate programs. “We’re a research institute, but if no one knows what we are doing or why it’s important, we’re spinning our wheels,” Sullivan said. HBF was founded in 1971 by J. Seward Johnson, Sr., heir to the Johnson and Johnson pharmaceuticals fortune, who had a passion for sailing and the ocean. He teamed up with Edwin A. Link, inventor of the flight simulator, whose passion

for sea exploration and engineering complemented Johnson’s vision. This partnership revolutionized deep-sea exploration as Edwin Link invented and built two Johnson-Sea-Link (JSL) submersibles in 1971 and 1975. Their two-meter diameter acrylic spheres allowed scientists a nearly 360-degree view of life down to 900 meters under the sea. FAU Harbor Branch was among three organizations in the nation, and six in the world, that ran manned deep-sea submersible research vehicles at that time. These were also the only submersibles in the world with lockout capabilities, in which divers could make dive excursions out of the subs to depths of 600 feet. Together the JSLs made more than 9,000 dives worldwide, led by more than 3,000 scientists, spanning more than three decades. The JSLs enabled biologists, geologists, archaeologists, engineers, resource managers, educators and students to witness new species and unlock the mysteries of the deep sea. From the earliest days to the institution’s current quests advancing oceanographic exploration, FAU Harbor Branch has remained steadfast in the pursuit of Ocean Science for a Better World®. Over the course of 50 years, program expansion at FAU Harbor Branch has allowed its marine scientists, engineers, educators and students to serve as a valuable community resource, increasing the reach to over 100 miles along Florida’s east coast, and remain a trusted leader for marine and ocean science research, conservation and education worldwide. American Crocodile

Florida’s Comeback Critter

I

n the middle of the night, deep in the backcountry of the Everglades National Park, swarmed by mosquitoes, I sat in a 12-foot jon boat along with two crocodile scientists. As we scanned our flashlights along the edge of the canal, the reddish eyeshine of dozens of baby crocodiles appeared. That’s when the work began. Nowhere else in the world do wild crocodiles and alligators coexist, except in South Florida. While these animals were once endangered and on the brink of extinction, thanks to conservation and monitoring efforts, they’ve been downlisted to threatened. “American crocodiles are a shy and cryptic species, not commonly seen in urbanized areas of Florida like the American alligator is,” said wildlife biologist Nicole Jennings, who is part of the “Croc Docs” research lab based out of the University of Florida. “Crocodiles are extremely important to the ecosystem because we can use them to determine how well the ecosystem they are living in is doing.” While alligators exist throughout the southeastern U.S., the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) has a much narrower range, living along the coastline in South Florida. They live in brackish or saltwater areas, and can be found in ponds, coves, and creeks in mangrove swamps. The American crocodile has always been rare in Florida, Jennings said,

but human population growth and development of coastal areas have depressed crocodile population numbers to even lower levels. Humans have built homes in what was once crocodile habitat. Prior to being listed as an endangered species, their numbers were estimated around 200. Now, that number has grown to around 2,000, said Jennings, mostly due to the creation of new protected nesting habitats, like Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Turkey Point nuclear power plant canals. To put that in perspective, there are currently more than one million alligators living in Florida. Since the 1970s, biologists with the Croc Docs team have monitored the American crocodile to understand trends and patterns of crocodile recovery. In the summer, the goal is to track nests and hatchlings to monitor how many are in the area. From their tiny jon boat, the scientists take weight and length measurements to estimate body condition and clip the tails so they can keep track of individuals. “The American crocodile making a comeback isn’t just about the crocodile,” said Jennings, “but about the success creating a suitable habitat, which also positively affects many other species.” Written and photography by Bethany Augliere

Great Blue Heron

Florida’s Wading Birds

F

or clarification, just like our own names, wading birds is a general name for birds with longer legs who would typically be ‘wading’ either shorelines, lake-edges, or through marsh areas in search of a food resource. Many times, just out of curiosity, you might also find these birds rummaging through yards, landscape, medians, or open fields, once again in search of food. In the displayed picture, this is a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), of the Ardeidae family, which is very common to North America. This large and very elegant heron has bluish-gray primary feather colorations and long, black legs with grayish to white underparts. Its long neck has bluish-gray colors, with a white pattern down the throat. Its large bill, which it uses as a spear to capture its food, is darker on the upper mandible and the lower being more yellow. Hints of brown can be found around the legs (rufous color), where they intersect the body. Quite noticeable, are the black stripes and cap above the yellow piercing eyes, with ordained black plumes that hang off the backside of the head. This heron is one of the largest but can easily be mistaken for a Sandhill Crane. The wingspan of the Great Blue Heron is 6 feet and when in-flight, the neck is typically folded back almost in s-shape. This bird is currently of ‘least concern’ regarding its ecology and conservation status, meaning it is not being watched as a bird of concern, or on the threatened or near-extinction list. These beautiful birds are quite common and could be seen near most bodies of water. Their primary diets consist of fish, some small and some

that just might make you wonder how in the creation will it ever swallow it. They do not have a jaw that detaches, which allows them to swallow these large specimens easier. They also might be found eating snakes, glass lizards, anoles, frogs, and instinctually anything else that just might cross their path as they wade the shallows. These birds, like most other herons and egrets, roost (sleep) in trees or bushes high and away from potential predators, which might be mammals of many sorts. This is also where you might find them with a mate, building a nest during the appropriate time of the year for nesting. They will collect sticks and arrange them, as one would suspect a nest to be built with smaller twigs and leaves, but these nests are very flat and well suspended. Most of their nests are built over water or on a rookery (island with other birds), so they can be protected from predators. These birds will raise one clutch, with two to seven eggs laid, annually. Enjoy their elegance as you see them walk gracefully along the shoreline or marsh area on your next walk! See how they cohabitate with so many others foraging, during their daily rituals. A great resource to learn more about these birds can be found at www.AllAboutBirds.org. For more information, contact Brian@NativeBirdBoxes.com and follow along on @NativeBirdBoxes. Winter is for Wahoo

G

eographically, the state of Florida is the gateway for many people into the Caribbean. Whether someone is choosing a far-flung destination like St. Lucia, Grenada, the U.S.V.I., or a much closer one like the Bahamas, the proximity of Florida allows for a relatively easy commute to any of these islands regardless of departing by airplane or boat. One of the most common times of the year to make this migration across the Gulf Stream by boat is during the summer season. Winds are typically low, and the weather is fair, allowing for an easy commute. However, one of my favorite times of the year to run across is during our winter months. Weather windows can be short lived, but the conditions can be beautiful. The weather is cool and crisp this time of the year which allows for fantastic sunny skies, typically with low humidity. During this time of the year, many fishermen will target wahoo. Wahoo is a species that thrives amongst the steep peaks and valleys that surrounds the Bahamian island chain. During winter months, the wahoo fishing in the islands can be better than anywhere in the world. The best ways to target wahoo tend to be towards the full moons of each month. Most everyone catches wahoo by highspeed trolling. Utilizing big rods and reels have been the most practical for catching wahoo. On average, a size 50 reel will provide anglers with enough power on a bent butt rod to land any wahoo. In areas of high shark populations, electric reels or even a larger size such as the 80 or 130 reels are recommended. Although wahoo are the most targeted species during these months, one also has a chance at catching mahi-mahi, bonefish, snapper, grouper, and more. With comfortable daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s and a high chance of catching some of the tastiest fish, the Bahamas is a booming winter destination, especially when it is only a few hours away from our homeland. Are You Drinking Too Much Alcohol?

The Answer May Surprise You

S

poiler alert: Alcohol is not a health food. During the holiday season, many people’s alcohol consumption increases due to family gatherings and holiday parties or depression and loneliness. Society tends to have a relaxed attitude around drinking, especially social imbibing, as if it is harmless. A general sentiment exists that if someone is not an alcoholic, then drinking is without consequence. Moreover, we’ve observed a lack of knowledge or denial of the health risks of alcohol and what constitutes light, moderate, and heavy drinking. Further evading the issue, doctors do not always ask patients about drinking patterns nor educate them preventively about negative effects, and patients often minimize alcohol intake when questioned. One drink constitutes either 12 ounces of beer, 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor, or a 5 ounce glass of wine. In the publication Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025, moderate drinking is defined as two or less drinks per day for men and one drink or less per day for women. Consumption of alcoholic beverages should be limited to this amount daily and not as an average over several days. Heavy drinking is defined as having four or more drinks on any day or eight or more drinks per week for women, and five or more drinks on any day or 15 or more drinks per week for men. By these definitions, many Americans fall into the category of heavy drinkers, yet they do not label themselves as such. However, the health risks exist regardless of a person’s insight into their alcohol use. Health risks are evident even with moderate drinking and escalate with higher levels of intake.

A recent study from the University of Oxford reported that there is no safe level of alcohol intake for brain health. It’s been known that chronic heavy drinking contributes to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. However, according to one of the researchers, “Even at levels of low-risk drinking, there is evidence that alcohol plays a larger role in damage to the brain than previously thought.” The National Cancer Institute identifies seven types of cancer caused by alcohol which include cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, liver, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer in women. Additionally, alcohol use above safe guidelines is a contributing factor to cardiometabolic disease including the onset and exacerbation of atrial fibrillation, weight gain and pre-diabetes; the latter two conditions associated with the high sugar calories in alcoholic beverages. Women with hot flashes and insomnia often find these symptoms made worse by alcohol. Alcohol also creates unfavorable alterations in the gut microbiome promoting intestinal inflammation and hyperpermeability of the gut mucosa which can drive systemic inflammation and tissue/organ damage. Drinking responsibly is more than choosing not to drink and drive, it’s about the consideration of your health long term. Being honest about your consumption can help you recognize whether your habits are compromising your well-being. Written by Angela King, AP, DOM Photography by Margarita Zueva

To Joy & Inner Peace

Tools for Mindful Emotions and Reactions

N

ever has there been a more relevant time to cultivate a sense of grounding from within. The world is shaky. As opposed to being discouraged by all the chaos that has been ensued by the inner and collective changes that are happening, I have found that this has led a lot of people seeking to learn how to focus on what they can control and engage in a process of self-inquiry like never before, and this, this is everything. 2021 for the win! Probably the most common thing I have heard this year is a mixture of frustration, exhaustion, but most importantly, the desire to learn how to make it stop. Individuals are expressing a desire to become mindful of their emotions and reactions, to learn to let things go and figure out how to live lighter, and practice tools to help them navigate difficulty, stay in the present moment and ultimately, be at peace. The times of venting, but doing nothing about it, seem to be a thing of the past. Often the next question that comes up is, “But, how do you?” I get it, we all have lives, schedules, and live in a material world that can absorb us, if we let it, so we don’t. To embark on the self-care journey, means work. It takes time and devotion, commitment, and accountability, but it really doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t have to become a hermit, leave all your possessions, and move to a monastery, or sit in silence 20 hours per day. In reality, the learning takes place in, well, the material world. Here is where we have a chance to apply and practice the tools, bring upon the desired changes, take notice, and most importantly, embody what we want to see. As the world continues to go ‘round and things inevitably continue to change, as they always have and always will, my hope is that this trend continues. People looking within, sitting with the truth that we cannot control anything, except how we see, react, approach, feel and think about things, and being curious about how we can learn more about ourselves and how to achieve a more peaceful existence. Here's a crash course on the tools available (a list of my favorite things): • Breathing; deeply, often. Whether it be establishing a formal practice or genuinely just stopping throughout your day to check in. This should be obvious, but because it is so automatic, we forget, this is our source of life. • Reading; writing, coloring, painting, drawing. Tapping into your creative energy. • Nature; the ocean does it for me every single time; I have a mermaid complex! You can also try walking barefoot on grass, hugging a tree (literally), listening to the birds chirping, visiting a botanical garden, sunrise, sunset. I mean, we are in Florida, the options are endless! • Watch your diet; meaning what you eat, what you watch, what you listen to, the information you consume, who you interact with. Be mindful and often ask yourself, how does this make me feel? (Remember, where your attention goes, your energy flows.) • Music and movement! Warming Up the Winter

A

s we make our way through fall and into winter, it is the best time to embrace warmer tones. Warmer tones are more reflective and make the hair sparkle. If you’ve been on the fence, this is the time to try something new. Blondes can become more buttery, brunettes can add a warm glow, and reds can become even richer. There are several ways to achieve these looks. The easiest way is by having your stylist formulate the perfect glaze for your hair. Glazes are a demipermanent, low volume, hair color that can be added over any color of hair, whether your hair is natural or already processed. Glazes are a transparent color that enhances what you already have. Think of them more as a sheer topcoat for your hair. The best thing about a glaze is that it is not permanent. Over time, they rinse out and you do not have to commit to any color forever, and the shine they add is so beautiful! Another way is to change your base color with a permanent color. This option is more for those who want to maintain a certain color over time. Whether you are covering grey or just want to change your natural color all together. Copper and red tones are continually becoming more popular this year and we foresee this trend lasting for a while. So, if you’ve been thinking about taking the plunge, this is the perfect time. Next time you see your stylist, talk to them about how you can warm up your hair and what would look best on you. Take a look on the internet and save some inspiration photos. We love to see what inspires you. If you already have an appointment on the books, make sure you reach out to your stylist well before your appointment. Timing might have to be adjusted to make these changes and consultations are always the best way to meet your stylist and make a game plan. Plus, this allows us to book the right amount of time for your appointment. Call us anytime for a consultation. Written and photography provided by Boho House Salon

In addition to being in the wedding industry, my sister Emma and I own Salt Beauty Bar, where we have created a one-stop-shop for all things beauty. I have been doing hair and makeup since I was a little girl, always using my sisters and mom as models. I grew up working in my aunt’s salon and from a very young age and I knew that this would be an industry I’d like to be a part of. I began to dream about owning a salon or being a full-time makeup artist, or both! As I grew older, my first step towards the beauty industry was cosmetology school. Once I graduated, I was behind the chair for a few years, but never let go of my passion for makeup. I started to do so much hair and makeup for so many different events, that brides began to take a serious interest in my work. I have since fallen in love with all things bridal.

What is a Certified Financial Transitionist?

O

ur experience often told us that our 25 years of practicing CFP (Certified Financial Planner) training didn’t fully equip us to skillfully handle clients who were anticipating or experiencing major life events. They sometimes behaved in unexpected and uncharacteristic ways, and we didn’t know why. There were times that we simply didn’t know what to do with them. We knew we needed a different way of doing what we were doing, and perhaps more importantly, we needed a different way of interacting with these clients. We had to look outside of financial planning for research and expertise. We found the answer in the training to achieve the CeFT (Certified Financial Transitionist) certification. We now have a clear understanding of what it takes to much better serve to guild those who are going through a financial transition. There are two sides of money: the technical and the personal. The best financial advisors are highly competent in the technical. However, CFP training often falls short when dealing with the personal side of financial change or transitions. CeFT training includes a full year of behavioral finance to supplement the CFP technical training, to provide the expertise to better serve these very special clients to far superior outcomes. Examples of financial transitions include Divorce, Inheritance, Legal Settlement, Retirement, Sale of a Business, Loss of a Spouse, and Sports and Entertainment Contracts and other Windfalls. Craig Phillips, CFP, AIF, CeFT is one of only four practicing CeFT practitioners in the state of Florida.
