ith all festivities and seasonal joy now historical, you probably feel like crawling back to bed and hibernating throughout the rest of the winter. Join the club. Perhaps that’s why it’s National Festival of Sleep Day on 3rd January, meticulously timed to coincide with our return to work. So, our celebration of that particular awareness day may be confined to having an early night and trying to capture those elusive eight hours.

Sleep actually plays an important role in your physical health, so our beds, and bedrooms, are vital to our well-being. On page 80 we peek into the bedroom and look at how to ramp up the “hygge factor.”

In a special travel section in this issue on page 88 we review the beautiful Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel in Madeira, which cleverly created an atmosphere of intimate, relaxed luxury, offering fabulous food and a wonderful golf course. All this, combined with their temperate climate, makes it the perfect winter holiday destination.

So, it’s back to reality, and perhaps back on the march for a new home this year? W

asn’t it Margaret Thatcher who claimed there was no such thing as community? Most definitions of community include things like shared geographic location, attitudes and interests; networks and connections; some shared interests and reciprocity. In fairness, residing in Downing Street and Whitehall, she probably was (and still is) right.

For the rest of us, despite the social, demographic and economic changes of the twenty-first century, community is alive and well in the nooks and crannies around high streets, stations, schools and pubs.

It steps in and helps when a school is threatened with closure, when your husband has a terrible accident, or when old Mr Smith down the road can’t get out to Tesco. Community buys dilapidated church halls and turns them into thriving centres. It collects coats and food for the homeless, lends you a cup of sugar and makes sure you get home safely at night. It is the co-dependent, shiny, life-filled sum of shared space and the people that inhabit it.

I was oblivious to ours until I got made redundant in 2015. I’d spent 15 years flying between station, school and home, and suddenly I stopped and landed smack in the middle of it. By the time I’d worked out what to do next, I was thoroughly ensnared. No more school run in my pyjamas - I couldn’t leave the house (even at 6am) without bumping into someone I knew. No more public swearing at Dave (the dog), no matter what atrocity had been committed, since one son or another would invariably hear it verbatim later at school. Or worse, half way through a tirade, from the corner of my eye I’ll spot staff

And anyway, the floor is the least of your worries. If you want to talk dirt, germs and even fungi, there are much, much grubbier places in the house.

No-one drops their toast in the toilet.

You’d be surprised at the number of people who drop their phone in the loo - but the WC isn’t the worst offender. One of the first places not to drop your toast is in bed: We produce on average 26 gallons of sweat each year when we sleep, and what doesn’t get absorbed into our clothes is taken up by bedding and mattress. This creates a hot, humid environment that scientists at the New York University School of Medicine call a ‘hotspot for microscopic life – and an ideal fungal culture medium’. A 2015 study from the University of Manchester found that the average pillow contains between 4-16

and children from my daughter’s nursery on their way to the swings, blinking at the second-hand verbal assault. On the plus side, I had a lot of new friends, from the park, the school, from the charity I volunteered at, and from our local pub.

So if you stop along the way to smell the flowers, take a moment to appreciate the park that they grow in, the shop around the corner, the pub over the road. Never mind location, location, location – a trip to the local pub or park and an hour spent people watching there will tell you everything you need to know about the place in which you live.

different types of fungi after only 18 months of use. In order to stop the fungus, bacterial and other nasties (including the outputs of millions of dust mites – dust mite poop) building up, we should thoroughly wash our bedding every 1-2 weeks.

Ok, so I wont eat in bed anymore. Or sleep, probably.

Well, the rest of the house is pretty ripe, too. A 2011 study carried out by US public health company NSF international swabbed 30 different household locations for bacteria, yeast and mould. The areas with the highest contamination rates were (worst offender first): Kitchen sink dish sponge, kitchen sink, toothbrush holder, pet bowl, coffee machine reservoir, bathroom tap handle, pet toy and worktop. Frequency of use, contact with pets, environmental conditions and contact with our mouths (which are pretty germy) all contribute to making these the dirtiest spots in the house.

I’ll get some bleach and my Marigolds It’s a good idea to know where germs linger, and to keep these areas clean, but we need contact with some microbes to keep our immune systems healthy. So if you don’t mind, I’ll just take my toast back and eat it.

Tate Modern’s comprehensive retrospective of Modigliani’s work. During his brief and turbulent life Modigliani developed a unique and instantly recognisable pictorial style. With 12 nudes on display, this is the largest group ever reunited in the UK. These works proved so controversial when they were first shown in 1917 that police censored his solo exhibition on the grounds of indecency.

Also featured are his lesser-known, radical and thought-provoking sculptures, as well as his portraits of his friends, lovers and supporters, including Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi and partner Jeanne Hébuterne.

OPEN UP ARCH-angels Architects improve the flow of a ground-floor flat in the West Hill Conservation Area THE BRIEF: The client came to us looking to refurbish their bathroom and change the only access to the large rear garden. Their property is a groundfloor flat situated on Alexandra Villas, which is within the West Hill Conservation Area.

Alexandra Villas were built in the 1860s, situated in the West Hill Conservation Area of Brighton. The building itself has a beautiful exterior design. However, during conversion into flats this historic building became chopped up into a labyrinth of rooms which simply do not flow. In our client’s case, the only access to their garden was through the bathroom – a far from ideal situation. But with the high ceilings, central location and large garden, the clients were hesitant to leave. Therefore, the brief was to create a new access route to the garden from the existing flat and refurbish the bathroom completely.

should be through the bedroom. We worked with the clients to create a design which would fit their needs and a home they felt comfortable in, enabling them to remain in the home they loved. A new, contemporary access platform and steps to the garden from the ground floor flat were proposed. We also proposed a replacement of the existing bedroom sash window with charming French doors, to open up the room, allow light to flood in and ,of course, give access to the new platform. This addition also provided the clients with the choice to retain the room as the bedroom or later convert it into the living room.

Although the building is not listed, discussions with the conservation officer at the local authority took place. Careful consideration was given to the design of the platform; a new, light-weight walkway and stairs in glass and steel was designed in order to have minimal impact on the existing building, and in particular the lower ground-floor flat. Due to the fact that the villa is located within a conservation area, we had to make sure that the exterior matched the rest of the building. Therefore, to block up the existing back door and replace it with a new window, we had to seal both the windows and put in opaque glass for privacy.

ARCHITECTURE

The alterations to the property included a complete refurbishment of the bathroom. Before the clients came to us, their bathroom provided them with the only entrance to their garden. They saw the opportunity to not only rid themselves of this awkward connection from inside to outside, but to also design and create a bathroom that reflects their style and needs. The outcome was a bespoke, contemporary room, comprised of sleek black tiling and the bold use of vibrant green. The contrast of the two colours against light coming in from the three windows provides a breath of fresh air into the once disappointing space.

roud Country House in Stanmer Park opened their new restaurant ‘Source’ last month with a seasonal ‘farm to fork’ menu.

Meats, fish and fresh produce are sourced from within 20 miles.

The food is complemented by the sumptuous surroundings of this Grade II-listed Georgian country manor, which has been sensitively renovated, juxtaposing antiques and reclamation yard finds with '70s glamour and modern patterns.

Lunch is served seven days a week, dinner is served on Friday and Saturday. There is also an informal Grazing Source menu, glorious Afternoon Tea and a traditional Sunday Carvery.

The man behind the operation is new Head Chef James Mitchell, who joins Proud Country House after 25 years' working in some of the best restaurants in the country. His career started at The Savoy Hotel in London, after which he went on to revamp and reinvigorate the kitchens of several high-end West End venues, including The Strand Palace and Hilton Park Lane. He says: “All our meat and vegetable produce is sourced from farms surrounding Stanmer House. Our fish is landed daily at Shoreham and Newhaven from our suppliers’ own

boats. All farms and suppliers are met and inspected by me personally to make sure they hold up the highest standards of naturally grown produce and well-kept and healthy animals.”

t never occurred to Tom Petty that gathering a group of friends to play music wouldn’t make them big stars. After meeting Elvis at the age of 10 and, later, watching the Beatles, he knew he was meant to be a musician and approached it with laser focus. In the late '60s, at age 17, Tom put his theory into practice: gathering several buddies, he took guitar lessons, added a few more instruments to the mix and was soon on his way to stardom. Nothing deterred him or slowed him down, even the disapproval of his father, who was disappointed that his son would take the artistic route rather than what he considered a more masculine sports-oriented road into adulthood. >

“It’s a California house with a European mountain lake-chalet vibe geared to inspire creativity, from its barrel-tiled roof to its enchanting terrace” Tom’s first band, the Epics, started out in his hometown, Gainesville, Florida, where he played locally between odd jobs to keep them financially afloat until they hit the big time, which he knew in his heart was just a matter of time. The Epics evolved into Mudcrutch, a popular band at the Gainesville University of Florida area bars, but failed to get outside attention. His next band, the Heartbreakers, quickly turned things around, making it to the top in 1976 with their hit song Breakdown. Tom and the Heartbreakers never looked back, producing classics such as American Girl, Free Falling, and I Won’t Back Down and forging a career that lasted over 45 years.

Music poured out of Tom Petty like a fast-moving river, as he produced hit after hit, many used for movie theme songs and sound tracks. Just as he imagined as a young boy, Tom and the Heartbreakers became one of the most popular American bands in history, garnering virtually every important award in the music industry and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Petty died in October at the age of 66, and now his much-loved Lake Sherwood getaway near Malibu and nine miles from the Pacific Ocean is for sale. The taiko: a traditional Japanese drum with limitless rhythmic possibilities. Kodo’s mission is to explore these possibilities, and in the process forge new directions for a vibrant living art-form.

In Japanese, the word Kodo holds a double meaning. It can be translated as 'heartbeat,' the primal source of all rhythm. Indeed, the great taiko is thought to be reminiscent of a mother’s heartbeat as felt from the womb, and babies are often lulled to sleep by its thunderous vibrations. If read in a different context, however, Kodo can also mean 'children of the drum,' which reflects the group’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. Since the group’s debut at Berliner Festspiele in 1981, Kodo has given over 5,800 performances in 49 countries on five continents.

The National Theatre’s acclaimed production of War Horse is on a major tour of the UK, which coincides with the Centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War. War Horse has won 25 awards, including the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway. Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s remarkable story of courage, loyalty, and friendship, about a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War, is the most successful play in the National Theatre’s history. It features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage.

Guy is the successful businessman with a nagging jealousy; Charles is the cold, calculating chancer with a dark secret. A daring and dangerous plan develops from this casual conversation, setting in motion a chain of events that will change the two men’s lives forever.

Until 28 January, Paula Rego: The Sketchbooks A rare opportunity to see Dame Paula Rego’s preparatory sketches, providing an insight into her remarkable draughtsmanship and the development of her ideas. Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1935, Rego has a career that spans over half a century and, since her studies at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, has travelled consistently between the two countries. Using folklore and fairy tales, both personally constructed and widely known, Rego’s work builds narratives of both trouble and fantasy, often leaving reality behind in favour of a religious fervour.

The exhibition draws largely from sketchbooks from the 1980s and '90s, including studies for some of her most famous works, and provides a new understanding of the work of one of Britain's and Portugal’s most-loved figurative artists. It coincides with an exhibition of Rego’s recent paintings at the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings. Paula Rego is supported by Marlborough and Kirker Pallant House, Chichester. 6 January - 29 April, Elizabeth Friedlander Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft presents the story of outstanding artist, designer and typographer Elizabeth Friedlander. The work of Friedlander (1903-1984) is instantly recognisable as mid-20th century design at its best, but few will know the name behind the art. Best known for her Penguin book covers and Bauer Type Foundry typeface ‘Elizabeth’, the exhibition touches on her escape to London from 1930s Nazi Germany, friendship with her sponsor – poet and printer Francis Meynell – and her work with a wartime British black propaganda unit. The show includes rarely-seen works from the artist’s compelling career, including type design, wood engravings, decorative book papers, maps and commercial work.

The exhibition is co-curated by video artist and author Katharine Meynell, granddaughter of Francis Meynell, who recently shone a light on Friedlander’s little-known story by writing and producing ‘Elizabeth’, a film about the artist.

FASTER AUTOMATED CONVEYANCING The HM Land Registry has revealed more details of long-term plans to improve and speed up conveyancing processes in a five-year business strategy. The Registry says that the increasing availability of online property information services and digital changes to how estate agencies operate has prompted it to respond with “a consistently high-quality multi-channel experience” - in other words, providing faster and better information to help speed up and simplify residential transactions.

“Over the five years of strategy execution we will find more ways to make it straightforward for conveyancers to submit applications to HM Land Registry and will explore with the industry how we might reduce the need to delay applications as we seek further information, known as requisitions,” the organisation says in its new strategy document. We will also look at how we can better support conveyancers through customer training and education programmes and also simplify the registration process.”

The Registry says it plans to digitise and automate 95 per cent of its daily transactions by 2022 - up from 81 per cent, according to the latest figures, dating from 2016. www.gov.uk/government/organisations/land-registry

ith 2017 almost at its end, property specialist Leaders has looked ahead to the new year and revealed its belief that the next 12 months will prove to be positive, albeit challenging, for the sector.

Andrew Hovey, Area Sales Manager for Sussex at Leaders, says there are plenty of reasons to be confident, whether you are planning to sell, let, buy or rent in 2018.

“Despite some experts predicting the property market would suffer in the wake of the Brexit vote and the uncertainty caused by a general election, quite the opposite has been true. 2017 has actually seen growth in house prices across the country and a renewed sense of positivity. We expect this to carry on through 2018 and for a variety of factors to combine to make the new year an extremely successful one.

Prices will continue to rise, making it a great time to sell, while recent changes to stamp duty payments will encourage more people across

the country to get moving.” Andrew has made three predictions of key trends he believes will come to define the property market in 2018: 1) House prices will continue to rise While there has been a softening in house price increases in recent months, the outlook for the market remains positive. A lack of supply will ensure properties remain in high demand and prices continue to rise. Leaders anticipates growth of between five and six per cent nationally in 2018, with some hotspots – such as areas that are commutable from London – likely to experience even greater increases.

2) More people will get moving The government’s recent announcement that it is scrapping stamp duty for first-time buyers will have a huge impact on the market in 2018. By making it more affordable for first-time buyers to get on the ladder, Leaders

expects the entire market to get moving as a result. First-time buyers will save thousands by not paying stamp duty, allowing them to build bigger deposit funds and buy sooner, which will allow even more second-steppers to make their next move.

3) Brexit negotiations will determine market confidence The great unknown in 2018 is the Brexit negotiations between the UK and the EU, with nobody yet sure how these will play out. The housing market can be sensitive to confidence levels, which are likely to be either positively or negatively affected by progress in talks between the two parties. While Brexit is unlikely to have a major impact on the UK property market, progress could lead to more people being willing to move while problems may result in reduced affordability that encourages people to stay in their homes.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE… It’s time to consider your property’s carbon monoxide safety during government consultation

andlords are advised to take measures to ensure their tenanted properties are adequately protected against the threat of carbon monoxide, as a new government consultation on the issue takes place.

The Department of Communities and Local Government is carrying out a review of safety regulations in the private rental sector, which currently require landlords to have a smoke alarm on every storey of a rental property and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room that contains a solid fuel burning appliance.

However, many tenants do not realise it is their responsibility to fit carbon monoxide alarms in any rooms that do not meet this criteria, with the Carbon Monoxide Be Alarmed campaign revealing almost a third of renters do not have an alarm anywhere in their property.

Although there is currently no indication

the existing legislation is set to change, it is worth acting to install alarms and prevent a disaster.

“Carbon monoxide detectors do not break the bank but can save lives, so we always advise landlords and tenants to have them installed” Joanne Darroch, Senior Branch Manager for Brighton and Hove at Leaders, says: “Carbon monoxide is something with which no landlord or tenant should ever take a risk. Landlords must meet their obligations to install an alarm in any room with a solid

fuel-burning appliance, while tenants should consider other areas of their homes that could benefit from an alarm.

“It is not only solid fuel burning appliances that pose a threat, as the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning extends to all types of combustion, including natural gas.

“Carbon monoxide detectors do not break the bank but can save lives, so we always advise landlords and tenants to have them installed in any property with either solid fuel, oil or gas installations.”

Earlier this month, a study by Certas Energy found four people in the UK are treated for carbon monoxide poisoning every day. Despite this, 58 per cent of people have no idea how to spot a leak.

Tell trusted Neighbours and Friends Let them know you will be away so that they can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity while you’re gone. Leave them your contact details, a spare set of keys and the code for any alarm so that they can drop by to close curtains, switch lights on and off, water plants and the lawn if needed and make sure there is no post poking out of the letterbox or parcels left on the doorstep.

DIY Keep a secret from social media Don’t post travel plans or photos while you’re away as this will publicly notify people that you have an empty home. Be sure that your kids also understand that they should wait until after you have returned home safely to share those holiday selfies. Recently the footballer John Terry was burgled after he posted holiday photos on his social media feeds.

Cancel Services Cancel any regular grocery, newspaper, milk and other deliveries while on holiday. If you forget to do this, these could be left on your driveway or by your front door, making your home an obvious target for a break-in.

Wireless Home Security and Video Monitoring System A home security monitoring system will provide an enhanced level of security and peace of mind while you’re away. Security Lighting Thanks to automatic switches, you can make it appear as if you’re home when you’re not. Set up some internal and outdoor lights on automatic switches, and be sure to pay special attention to entry points. These lights are generally inexpensive and easy to install, but double-check that they are working properly before you go.

Check Insurance and Banking Services Ensure that your policies are paid up for homeowners, car, and medical insurance. If necessary, advise your bank and credit card companies that you will be away so that they can alert you to any unusual account activity.

Contact Your Alarm Company If you have the more formal home surveillance service, be sure that they have the current key holder details in order to prevent any false alarms interrupting your holiday. Has the alarm been serviced? Update the local authorities if you’ve registered your alarm with them.

Doors and windows In most burglaries, the criminals broke into the house or flat through the door, either by forcing the lock or kicking it in. So make sure your doors are strong and secure. Consider fitting a bar for extra strength; a locksmith can advise you on how best to do it.

Glass panels on doors are particularly vulnerable. If you have one on your door you could replace it with laminated glass, which is stronger.

You can also buy a film in a DIY store that you can stick over the glass to make it harder to break.

Home security and DIY shops sell inexpensive, key-operated locks to fit most kinds of windows. Fit window locks with keys to all downstairs windows and those upstairs that are easy to reach.

LANSDOWNE PLACE HOTEL The proposed conversion of the former Lansdowne Place Hotel has gained approval. Morgan Carn architects have proposed to change the use of the building from a hotel into 47 residential units. The design for this conversion includes the removal of some of the incongruous elements, the addition of a sleek penthouse floor, creating car parking and secure cycle parking at lower ground-floor level, and substantial landscaping.

The Lansdowne Place Hotel closed five years ago in January 2013 with debts of more than £1 million on top of its mortgage of almost £7 million. Previously known as the renowned Dudley Hotel, the building at the heart of the Brunswick Estate has enjoyed a colourful history. This historical research revealed clues that led to the design for a new green rear courtyard wrapped by mews houses. Whilst the main façade will remain, the rear areas and upper floors have been exploited for a variety of unit types and pockets of external space.

The proposal underwent several complications whilst in planning due to the challenges that came with including affordable housing within the scheme. After the initial proposal failed to gain permission, the applicants appealed against the need for affordable housing. Their appeal argued that if the development is considered to be not viable, then the application should be dealt with so that it becomes viable. There is no doubt that the city has a very great need for affordable housing, so a compromise was found in the form of a commuted sum of £2.4 million, which the developer would pay Brighton & Hove to enable the council to provide affordable housing elsewhere.

MILE OAK HOUSING SITE Mile Oak housing site Domain Architects are the third firm to be appointed on a difficult housing site in Mile Oak. Despite a previous approval at planning, the client wanted a financially sustainable scheme, and Domain have spent the year negotiating on the transport, arbori-cultural, heritage and planning issues with the planning department, client and consultants.

A planning application is being submitted for a mix of seven new and converted flats and houses, retaining the majority of the locally listed flint boundary wall which is such a positive feature of the local townscape. A re-thinking of the difficult access issues has resulted in resolution of the traffic management issues.

A contemporary interpretation of the historic Sussex palette of blackstained timber, flint, brick and self-finished render compliments the retained brick buildings, which, although not listed or in a conservation area, add to the established sense of place and have been accepted as appropriate by the LPA in the pre-application process.

BRIGHTON’S CENTRAL PARK The Valley Gardens project aims to reduce the impact of traffic between St Peter’s Church and the Royal Pavilion, to better link the green spaces to the city centre. This will improve the environment and transport links through the central valley leading to Brighton seafront and city centre.

Features will include an improved network of paths for cyclists and pedestrians. On the east side of the valley general traffic will flow, and on the west side there will be a quieter route exclusive to buses, taxis and other local traffic headed for the North Laine area.

This project has proposed to cost £10m, which will mostly be funded by government money coming in via the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership. This money is only permitted to be spent on the Valley Gardens project.

A planning application covering re-landscaping of the area was submitted during the summer, and will hopefully reach a committee

by Christmas. Subject to approval, work is expected to start next spring.

It makes scents: Your sense of smell plays a part in your mood.

Different smells can evoke memories, create a sense of comfort, security or peace, and can impact our mood tremendously. Vanilla is good for putting you at ease, lavender induces calm and citrus scents can perk you up. Popular feel-good winter scents include sandalwood, cinnamon, musk, vanilla, orange and clove.

Declutter, declutter declutter: Believe it or not, a mere 20 minutes a week of cleaning can alleviate symptoms of depression. In 2011, Princeton University found that clutter makes it more difficult to focus on a task. A clear living space really does make for clear mind, meaning you can get on with more pleasurable pursuits without being caught up with the chaos. Move over, spring-clean and come on in, autumn clear-out.

Chocolate is not always bad: Stock up on quality chocolate (and hot chocolate for those colder nights). Dark chocolate boosts the production of feel-good endorphins and improves blood flow to the brain. Make sure to treat yourself to purer forms, which offer the greater health benefits.

Baking Therapy: In Scandinavia, baking is a standard winter ritual.

Mental health and culinary experts are now supporting the idea that baking can work to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression by

combining aspects of traditional occupational therapies. There is a multitude of reasons why baking can make us happier, including the simple fact that it provides a nice treat to enjoy, brings the family together, makes the home cosy and inviting and makes it smell good too.

As winter draws in, it is important to remember to take five regularly and make the most of the warmth and the health benefits that a lowcalorie, cleansing tea can offer.

e spend over a third of our lives in bed, making the bedroom the most occupied room in the house.

Bedrooms are intimate spaces where design has a real impact: colour, style and form all affect our mood and our ability to sleep. Whether your bedroom is small and cosy or large and luxurious, style and design matter.

Neutral colours Neutral palettes and pastels are key for bedrooms, a departure from the brights and bold monochromes of the last few years.

The trend for wallpaper is still strong, although more muted in bedroom than living spaces – feature walls rather than wall-towall, in metallic and earth tones.

Alternatively, soft, dark colours can feel welcoming and soothing in a bedroom. Keep to one colour or tone, but add interest with different textures, using wallpaper or paint effects. Don’t be afraid to add a little highlight of colour here and there: layering bed linen with runners or beautiful throws and cushions will make your bed sumptuous and inviting. Art works beautifully in bedrooms, but try to keep to one large piece, ideally of a neutral subject or abstract. >

Eclectic style A bedroom should be about what makes you tick.

Don’t worry about being faithful to one style or trend: pick pieces that make you feel good, but don’t overdo it. If you have one or two ‘loud’ pieces in the room, for example, a statement bed and huge chandelier, keep everything else toned-down or ‘quiet’ to allow you to really appreciate the beauty of those two special pieces.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up, so long as you love what you see.

Mood lighting As with any room, having enough of the right sort of lighting will help you to make the most of your bedroom. A central statement light, supplemented by ambient (soft, peripheral light) and focused task light (a reading light) will give you options for a range of moods and activities. The statement light can be something that fits your personal taste and style: an oversized glass chandelier, a contemporary feather globe or something more industrial.

Multifunctional design Bedrooms can be multi-tasking spaces: although most interior designers will advise against using a bedroom as work space, the reality is that many of us will use bedroom space for working, surfing the net or simply watching TV. Good storage will mean you can use your room for work, sleep and entertainment without any problem – a TV that rises from the foot of the bed (and can be put back when you’ve finished watching) will have much less impact on a room than one that’s simply stuck on the wall.

Bedroom storage is often neglected – yet there’s nothing

worse than tripping over piles of shoes or books. Clever under-bed storage will help you put bedding and shoes away out of sight, and the space around beds – alcoves and walls – can be used effectively for built-in floor to ceiling shelves or a foldaway desk. Well-designed clothes storage is worth its weight in gold, adding more space than you thought possible, so if you’re going to splash out on one aspect of the bedroom, storage is likely to have the biggest impact.

And relax Styling your bedroom for a good night’s sleep is vital.

Warm white lighting (turn off any screens well before bed, as the blue light from devices can interfere with sleep patterns) and soothing colours (soft blue, green or neutral tones are best). If natural light bothers you on early summer mornings, blackout blinds will keep it dark. Pair them with soft, sumptuous curtains in winter to keep the heat in. Get rid of any unnecessary clutter and paperwork to keep your head clear. Scent can help soothe you to sleep: treatment candles featuring lavender, chamomile and other herbs help to produce a relaxing atmosphere. If you’re still having trouble nodding off, it might be time to change your mattress for something more comfortable: everyone varies in their mattress preference, so try out a few different types (memory foam, sprung, or the new hybrids) before you decide.

One final tip for a good night’s sleep: routine is the key to getting little ones off to sleep, and it’s the same for us grown-ups, too. INTO THE GARDEN Evergreens and early bulbs will keep the garden alive in January.

anuary is the start of a whole new, exciting year in the garden. Days are shorter, the nights longer, and still very cold outside.

The garden, however, is anything but dull. A few early bulbs will soon be appearing to lighten the garden and bring some colour to the winter landscape. The wonderful drifts of crocus, dwarf iris, snowdrops and mini daffodils will grace our gardens and woodlands once more. The evergreens - ivy, holly and laurels, for instance - will provide the backbone to a bare landscape until spring properly takes hold.

Frost will still be a regular visitor, so keep off the lawn to avoid damaging the grass. As shoots and bulbs begin pushing upwards, try not to walk on the areas where they are planted. If the weather worsens, it is a good idea to brush off snow on conifers and evergreens where possible as the extra weight can cause damage. Check all containers are standing on feet for improved drainage and to stop pots from cracking. Move

pots to a sheltered position.

Winter months can be a good time to move shrubs, providing the ground is not frozen.

Make sure you pack the soil firmly around the transplanted plant. Water well and mulch with bark to keep the plant snug.

This is a good time to prepare for the coming months in the garden by checking your gardening tools are clean and in good order. If it is dry, any wooden furniture or fencing could be treated about now. Now is also a time when you should rake fallen leaves, paying attention to those under hedges and shrubs. Remember to take care when doing this in case of hedgehogs hibernating.

Perennials can be cut back now; remove any old or damaged growth to make way for new shoots.

Use this month for sitting and relaxing whilst planning your gardening year. Look at gardening books and magazines and get inspiration for your own garden. Finally, enjoy the beauty of your winter garden.

COMING HOME TO CASA VELHA Craving a respite from the soggy south-coast English weather that can't seem to decide whether it wants to be winter or spring, Daniel Frickelton and companion head for Madeira in search of warmth, sun and golfing fun...

Y

ou know the feeling. The calendar is lurching towards the final weeks of its yearly cycle, you tumble out of bed, gaze listlessly at a leaden sky with clouds hurtling past at a furious pace and wonder how many layers of clothing you will need today. Will it be wet and breezy or wet, breezy and cold? At times like this, it's good to have a Madeira card in your hand. With its year-round stable climate, world-class golf courses and resorts and easy accessibility from Britain, it is the perfect tonic for your winter blues. And Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro, from its lofty vantage point high above Funchal town and harbour is, in every sense of the term, “a cut above.”

Variously described by celebrated visitors throughout the centuries as an English country house and a West Indiesstyle colonial plantation, Casa Velha do Palheiro began its life around the turn of the 18th century, when the current hotel was purchased by the 1st Count of Carvalhal, João Esmeraldo, for use as a summer residence and hunting lodge.

The Portuguese nobleman enlisted the services of a French landscape gardener in laying out the “quinta” (farm) and the grounds were set in the beautiful surrounding parkland. The now famous gardens were established and populated with trees and plants from all over the world. The rest, as they say, is history, and the estate is rich in the trappings of history, including royal liaisons and mysterious ghosts in the chapel.

The Palheiro Estate's current incarnation dates from 1972, when the new owners established the golf course in existing woodland and farmland, restored the dilapidated Casa Velha, turned it into the hotel and built the Palheiro Village apartments and houses on the hillside overlooking Funchal harbour and town. Since then, Palheiro Estates have been able to provide holiday accommodation to suit every taste and privacy requirement, either in self-catering apartments of the highest standard or, as in our case, in the intimate, relaxed luxury of the Casa Velha hotel, nestled among the ancient trees on the northern edge of the golf course and adjacent to the famous botanical gardens.

The hotel had arranged for taxi transport from Funchal airport to Casa Velha, a nice touch, especially when you have golf equipment for two in tow. We were welcomed, first by the enormous, sprawling Metrosideros, or Christmas Day tree, from New Zealand that guards the entrance to the hotel, and then by the reception staff. I shall never forget the inexplicable feeling I had of “coming home.” We were shown to our suite at the far end of the hotel extension and a few steps away from

the golf course. This spacious accommodation was populated with proper furniture, a skilful blend of the old and the new, to create an overall impression of comfort, familiarity and homely relaxation. Having arrived too late to be interested in a restaurant meal, we put Casa Velha's room services to the test. Our supper arrived without undue delay, hot things were hot and the rest was not. The wine was superb, the food of high quality and the service impeccable. Five stars.

Besides the cornucopia of fresh fruit, yoghurts and juices, there was a veritable feast of Continental options, with a vast array of cold meats, several sliced cheeses, German breads, French ones, croissants, pains au chocolate and local Madeiran bakery specialities. Try these. They are wonderful. You may, of course, order eggs done in any fashion, and there is a hot table of bacon, sausages, hash-browned potatoes, baked beans and the like. So you can construct your English breakfast if you can't wait until your holiday is a fait accompli. We went native, had a bit of fresh fruit to start, slid into a freshly prepared omelette (any way you like it) and finished with a modest selection of local pastries. Marvellous.

Coffee or tea in proper china pots, tablecloths and cutlery fit for a gentleman and his lady. I couldn't help noticing how often the waiting staff greeted the breakfast guests by name, complete with hugs and personal remarks, which indicated a long, cordial relationship. We were among a large number of guests who had been returning to this place for years. They clearly also felt like they were “coming home.” >

Thus fortified, we sallied forth to the other end of the golf course, shuttle service happily provided by the hotel as part of the package, to enjoy our first round of golf. Having played the Palheiro course several years before, we were familiar with this challenging Cabell Robinson layout, and our knees were knocking slightly in anticipation of having to negotiate the demanding tee shot on the first hole, made tricky by the severely sloping fairway and absence of any bail-out area to the right. To our surprise, a number of the large trees bordering the fairway on the right had been removed to create more space, thus making this first hole a good deal friendlier. As we progressed around this wonderful track, breathtaking views in all directions, it was apparent that a number of plane and oak trees were being thinned out to create a feeling of space and light, welcome improvements to a course with often very tight lies.

Those who have had the privilege of playing at Palheiro will no doubt smile in recognition when I say that no two holes here are the same, all have their challenges, some have their quirks, but common to them all are the unforgettable views of Funchal and the Atlantic all around, the beautiful ancient parkland setting high up in the hills and a course design incorporating a sense of fun and drama.

The wind had been up on the golf course, so we turned up in Casa Velha's bar and lounge with sharpened appetites and a hankering for a nice gin and tonic. These last were served up in very large stemmed glasses with plenty of ice and generous amounts of gin. When the head waiter came over with the dinner menus we were feeling like the first Count and Countess of Carvalhal, right at home in this gracious, international environment of elegant relaxation. There were groups of old friends who obviously had been coming here for years. There were other first-timers like us who found it very easy and natural to connect with one another and agree outings or rounds of golf together. Casa Velha is that kind of place.

Although the hotel's a la carte menu is superb, we wanted to try the three-course daily menu, which, by the way, changes daily. We enjoyed several superb meals in Casa Velha's restaurant and a dazzling selection of delicious and superbly prepared dishes spanning the culinary horizon. Chicken or guinea fowl, several varieties of fish, beef tournedos and more graced our palates during our week. Stand-out dishes were starters of white bean soup, at once hearty and creamy, with chunks of spicy chorizo sausage, and the elegant beef carpaccio, which melted on the tongue like a Holy Communion wafer. Best mains were grilled sea bream fillets perched on a bed of stir-fried vegetables, laced with lemongrass and sweet/sour sauce and graced with crunchy “rice lace” (which we have subsequently dubbed “filligreedy rice”) and veal noisette, a memorable dish made so tender – probably in a sous vide – that I struggled to cut it with a knife, served with Madeiran spinach in a creamy sauce containing old “vintage” vinegar for a hint of sharpness. It doesn't really matter, though, what you choose in this restaurant; everything will be cooked with great skill, using fresh local ingredients, served with panache and friendly competence by the staff and enjoyed in an atmosphere of candle-lit elegance with proper cutlery and tablecloths.

Lunches were taken at the other end of the golf course, on the terrace of Palheiro Golf Club, which besides boasting perhaps the most beautiful open-plan clubhouse you will ever see, commands an enviable, breathtaking view of Funchal city and harbour from its 500m clifftop perch. The menu is simple, unfussy and desirable.

Inspired by southern European tastes and informed by the awardwinning cuisine of Casa Velha's kitchen, it embraces classics such as club (and many other) sandwiches, burgers and lasagne as well as more substantial items, such as grilled beef entrecote with either Béarnaise or pepper sauce. The evening dinner menu is of similar high quality, well prepared and served with the same friendly professionalism we came to expect everywhere at Palheiro Estates.

We feel like members of the family now, so we will be back soon.

FINDING STRENGTH IN NATURE Innovative ethno-botanist James Wong gives us an all-natural chicken soup recipe that is perfect for staving off winter colds

“I

’m a scientist, not a gardener. Most of what we consider very conventional British crops like potatoes and cabbages come from places like Peru and Afghanistan – and they have nothing like the climate we have. Things like kiwi berries come from climates that are almost identical to ours, and Siberia. So things like kiwis are so much easier to grow than things like cabbages.

What I have found is that people in the UK, if they’re British and a gardener, end up growing things just because their grandparents did – they didn’t test them, you know; there was no scientific trial to find out what would grow and what isn’t worth growing. They just grew stuff their grandparents grew. If we were like that with food or medicine or any other aspects of our lives then we were basically living in Victorian Britain, where people were malnourished and there was child labour.

Civilisation has moved on, so gardening must move on.

We have less time to garden now, we have smaller gardens, and we don’t have all of the resources that big Victorian gardens did, so we have to think about gardening in a more logical way. And I like to look at stuff that is evidence-based.

Everyone expects there to be one big moment where you suddenly realise you are interested and want to work in plants. I think everyone expects that, but it didn’t happen for me. I think there are some people who are born with a geeky gene. I’ve always been interested in plants, since I can remember. I’m going to blame genetics – there’s no other explanation!

It just must be that. There are some people who describe themselves as working as a botanist, but it think it’s like having brown eyes. It’s not that I work as one, it’s that I am one. Even if I was working in a bank, I would be plantobsessed.

I would say soil is the basis of plant growing. Once you’ve got that sorted, the plants have evolved over billions of years to grow themselves – it’s in their own interest to grow. In terms of what you need for a home garden – all soil will be improved when you add large amounts of compost, and when you’ve done it once you never have to do it again.

If you recycle anything in my local council, they give you free compost. I go maybe once a month or every couple of months to pick up some big old bags and just stick them on.

GOJI BERRY AND CHICKEN SOUP FOR COMBATING COLD AND FLU There's no cure for the common cold but that doesn't stop us from splashing the cash on cold and flu remedies. Eating fruit and specifically consuming goji berries is a great way to boost your body's defenses. Surprisingly, they have been spotted in Britain growing naturally along the south coast. When you are coming down with a cold or flu, goji berries are great dietary supplements to get you through as they are full of nutrients to help support your immune system.

This soup not only tastes great but is packed full of ingredients that could help you fight off the first signs of a cold.

SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tbsp dried echinacea root 200ml water, freshly boiled 5 tbsp goji berries, fresh or dried 2l chicken stock (homemade or from stock cubes) 3 chicken thighs or drumsticks 2 large onions, peeled and sliced 12 shiitake mushrooms, thinly sliced 10cm root ginger, peeled and shredded 2 fresh medium-sized chillies, finely sliced 8 garlic cloves, chopped extra sliced ginger and chillies to serve Add noodles if desired.

METHOD Combine the dried echinacea root with the water in a bowl. In a separate bowl, pour just enough cold water over the goji berries to cover them and then leave to rehydrate. Set both the echinacea and goji berries aside and leave them to stand.

Place the stock and chicken pieces in a large pan or slow cooker. Add the sliced onions, mushrooms, ginger and chillies, placing them around the chicken. Simmer gently for one-and-a-half to two hours on a very low heat, or until the chicken is tender and falls apart. Take off the heat.

Five minutes before serving, add the goji berries and chopped garlic. Finally, strain the echinacea infusion and add this to the soup, reheating the whole thing if necessary.

Garnish with the extra sliced ginger and chillies for an extra kick, and serve.

ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY This month we take a look at a beautiful walk through the countryside near Steyning, Chanctonbury and Washington

S

teyning town is rich in history, with scores of timberframed buildings in and around the ancient high street. It was once a port on the River Adur and was prized by the Normans; their legacy today includes the magnificent parish church and the ruins of the castle in nearby Bramber. Visit some of the many shops, restaurants, pubs and tea rooms, or pop by for the monthly farmers’ market.

The route of this circular walk takes you out of Steyning and then steeply up to join the South Downs Way. You’ll see views of Cissbury Ring, which covers 60 acres and is one of the largest Middle IronAge hill forts in Europe. The earthworks date back to 250 BC. The trail also takes you past Chanctonbury Ring, another Iron Age hill fort. The Ring’s current fame stems from a crown of Beech trees planted in 1750 by Charles Goring of Wiston House. Although not well received initially, the trees later became a wellknown landmark. The trees in the centre of the ring didn’t grow too well, and it was later discovered that they had been planted on an old Roman temple. Many of the trees were destroyed in the great storm of 1987, and the Goring family, who still own Wiston House, are working to restore the ring to its former glory.

On leaving the Ring, the route descends to Washington, where an optional extension allows for a lunch break in the village. You can then return past Wiston House to Steyning.

My Grandad Was Innocent

A

fascinating look at historical real-life murder convictions. Two top criminal barristers, Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein, investigate historical murders where the convicts went to the gallows pleading their innocence. They join forces with a living member of the convicted criminal’s family to re-examine the crime and evidence, employing modern forensic techniques to ask whether the original conviction was safe.

Between 1900 and 1964, 845 men and 18 women were hanged in the British Isles and a further 5,960 people were found guilty of murder and given life sentences. Of these cases, 2,738 were referred to the Court of Appeal. Going back over original police files and trial documentation, the barrister-presenters of My Grandad Was Innocent identify crimes that bear the hallmarks of miscarriages of justice. The pair examine every detail of the case, piecing together the evidence to create a complete picture of the crime and a profile of personalities involved. They then draw on the knowledge of medical and forensic experts, the police, local history experts and crime writers to interpret their findings and prepare a final submission for the courts.

THOUSANDS CLASSED AS HOMELESS IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE A national homeless charity has identified Brighton and Hove as the area with the highest levels of homelessness in the South East. Brighton & Hove topped Shelter’s list, and the charity said one in every 69 people in the city is classed as homeless.

The number of people living in temporary accommodation was 4,074, and there were 144 rough sleepers recorded, making a total of 4,218 people classed as homeless. Shelter has revealed the number of people recorded as homeless in the South East has reached 27,600. The report combined official rough-sleeping, temporary accommodation and social services figures, which showed the number of homeless people in the region has increased by 20 per cent in a year. However, as government records are not definitive, Shelter says that the true figure of homelessness is likely to be even higher. www.shelter.org.uk

STEPH FULLER APPOINTED AS NEW DIRECTOR Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft have announced their new director will be Steph Fuller. Steph will take up her new role on 3 January 2018, bringing with her a wealth of arts and cultural leadership experience. Since 2013 she has headed up Ideas Test, an action research programme aimed at increasing cultural engagement in an area of Kent, currently in the bottom 20%. Over the last four and a half years Steph has driven forward the vision and realisation of this £2m project, winning a grant from Arts Council England to see the project through to its second phase. Prior to that she held senior management roles at Arts Council England. Steph has responded to her appointment, saying: “I am delighted to be taking up the post of Director at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft. SOHO HOUSE DEVELOPMENT TO START The long-awaited redevelopment of Brighton Seafront’s Aquarium Terraces is now due to start early this year after being delayed by structural works at the Sea Life Centre. Planning permission for the ambitious revamp, which involves knocking down much of the existing buildings on Madeira Drive and building new pavilions, was first approved in April 2016.

Developers, Brighton Seafront Regeneration Limited (BSRL), say that difficulties with co-ordinating work with the Sea Life Centre repairs caused a delay, and work is now due to start early next year. BSRL also donated £50,000 to the Madeira Terraces crowdfunding campaign, helping to smash the £421,000 target so work can also start on the other terraces on Madeira Drive in the summer.

Council leader Warren Morgan said: “BSRL and Soho House remain committed to the project. They aim to start work on the lower west end of the building early in 2018, and the eastern end will follow.”

He is described by The Guardian as “Approaching the status of national treasure,” while The Times affirms that he is “At the top of his game.” The New York Times enthuses that “Bailey is an unalloyed pleasure, a treat for the funny bone, the brain and the ear.” The Daily Telegraph, meanwhile, calls him “The brainiest comic of his generation.”

An hour in his company at his local pub in West London simply whizzes by. Over orange juice and cheese and onion crisps – rock ‘n’ roll, eh? – we touch on everything from Indonesia to stone masonry. It is like being treated to a Royal command performance – to an audience of one.

The comedian, who over the past 20 years has enjoyed a dozen immensely successful international stand-up tours, begins by underlining how much he is looking forward to touring with “Larks in Transit.”

He asserts that nothing beats the heady feeling that comes from live comedy. “There’s nothing quite like it. It’s a singular experience. I don’t think there is anything that quite matches up to it in all of performance art. When you’re in a play or a band, it’s still a collaborative thing.

“When everything comes together and you think of an idea, a joke or routine that connects with people, it’s incredible. It’s the most amazingly satisfying experience hearing an arena full of people laughing at something you’ve thought up. It’s a tremendous buzz.”

Bill, who won the Best Live Stand-Up gong at the British Comedy Awards in 1999, adds that “the best of those times come when you’re laughing along with them. It’s like you’ve hit on a bit of funny.

It’s a bit of funny that was out there, a bit of universal funny that you’re just lucky enough to have plucked and shared with everyone. Those moments are rare, but they are wonderful.

“There’s a great folk singer who said that the tunes are out there. You just have to tap into them or capture them before someone else gets them.”

“Larks in Transit” features long-form stories about the weird and wondrous places that Bill has visited. He recounts to me one particularly amusing traveller’s tale. “We were on a birding trip in the jungles of Indonesia. I cannot tell you how remote this place was. It was like some sort of Eden. I was just standing there naked in this river. I was the only person there, and I was thinking, ‘This is one place where I won’t meet anyone.’

“Then out of the blue, a couple of Aussies just came out of the bush and shouted, ‘Oh, look at that - it’s Bill Bailey! What the bloody hell are you doing here?' That just suddenly brought me back down to earth.” The comic, who has starred in such widely-adored TV comedies as Black Books, Spaced and Is It Bill Bailey?, adds that “the two elements of what I’m talking about in this show come together in that story. The show is about being lucky enough to have those kinds of experiences, where you get to think about the world and our relationship with Nature. But it’s also about how my life has led me to the point where people do recognise me in those same places.”

Bill, who for 11 highly popular series was a team captain on BBC2’s hit comedy pop quiz show, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, reflects: “My grandfather was a great influence on me.

He was a stone mason, and he had a very strong work ethic. Somehow, through all the chats I had with him, I get the feeling that’s rubbed off on me. He used to tell me about the dignity of work and really developing a craft. He taught me that you shouldn’t give up too easily.

You continue, you endure, you keep moving forward and somehow work gains its own meaning. You don’t have to think too much about it. You just keep going. I hope I have been true to the spirit of what my grandfather said.”

The comedian considers the importance of music in his show: “It’s another dynamic, really, it’s a bit of light and shade. I always think it’s a tremendous art and a tremendous skill to keep people’s attention with the spoken word for a couple of hours. I’m always aware of that. So when I was starting out in stand-up, I was looking for ways to break it up.

“I think music works on a different level to language. Some of the words create a picture and can feed people’s imaginations. Often slow-burn, great, long routines can build up to great crescendos. But music gets you on the gut level. It gets you straight away. It’s a more instantaneous kind of reaction.”

Another standout characteristic of Bill’s comedy is his captivating use of language. That is once again evident in “Larks in Transit.” “I think we’re very lucky to have English as our language,” muses the stand-up.

“It’s just so expressive and so endlessly supple, and it has myriad ways of telling the same story. You can tell the same story, embroider it, put in new language, and it becomes something completely different. It’s a treat and a wonder.”

So, as you can see, those of you fortunate enough to secure tickets for “Larks in Transit” have a terrific night out in prospect. Bill’s shows remain so entertaining because, after more than three decades in comedy, Bill is still as passionate about it as ever.

In fact, he observes: “I appreciate it even more now because I realise that I’m lucky to have this career. I’m lucky to still be doing this and to do something I love. I’m lucky that after all these years, people still want to come and see me.

“My priority is always funny first. Then if you have the time and the experience to refine it to the level where maybe the odd phrase does get through to people – well, that’s as good as it can get really.”
