Leaders Auction of children’s art raises £2,200 for Macmillan A special auction of children’s artwork took place in Brighton last month in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, raising £2,200 for the charity. Leaders hosted the auction as part of its popular annual art competition in which school children of all ages are invited to ‘Create a Masterpiece for Macmillan’. The best pictures were put on display at Leaders’ Western Road branch for attendees to enjoy and place bids on. Auctioneer Nick Muston from Austin Gray, encouraged everyone to dig deep for Macmillan and they did not disappoint. A number of the pictures attracted keen interest, in particular a striking painting of colourful beach huts by Izzy Willet, age 13. After numerous bids were placed, the painting was sold for £310, the highest bid of the evening. Leaders have chosen Macmillan as their charity partner for 2014 and have pledged to raise £25,000 for them this year. Macmillan needs to raise £3.7million to fund the Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in Brighton, set to open in the summer/autumn of 2014 www.leaders.co.uk, www.macmillan.org,uk

Mill Lane, Shoreham-by-Sea
Guide Price £1,200,000 Freehold EPC TBC
Down a pretty winding lane and a stone’s throw from the wonderful café’s and independent stores on Shoreham High Street and even closer to Shoreham’s mainline station lies number seven Mill Lane. Surrounded by charming, mature gardens and partial flint-stone and pretty red brick walling, this 1930’s period home is nestled away from the rest of the street and has a feeling of seclusion and perhaps just a little art nouveau grandeur. A splendidly detailed and rustic wooden gate leads down a paved path to the front door in the centre of the house. This, in turn, leads through a vestibule into the main entrance hallway, where glazed leaded-light double doors lead onto a super walled garden, offering security and relative seclusion. Off the hallway on the ground floor are living room, dining room, guest cloakroom and serving area leading to the kitchen. The generous living room runs from the front to the back of the house and opens out, through another set of delightful glazed leaded-light double doors, onto a stone paved terrace and glorious garden beyond. The striking wood-panelled dining room across the hallway also overlooks the back garden through a pretty bow window and features a superb panelled fireplace surround and mantel. Adjacent to this is the erstwhile serving area which opens into a good-size family kitchen, which benefits from a walk-in larder, ample space for a dining table and a separate utility/boiler room. Here, past a small cupboard and outside cloakroom, there is access to the garden at the side and to the pathway over to the garage and shed.
Period details abound throughout this lovely home; pretty wooden doors and door furniture, wall panelling, fire-surrounds and skirtings, together with beautiful, leaded-light bow windows and high ceilings. Back in the main hallway, the handsome stairway, again in early 20th century design, leads up to the first and second floors. The first floor benefits from four double bedrooms, including a master with en-suite, a family bathroom, box room and storage cupboard. Two of the bedrooms overlook the pretty front garden and the other two the back garden and over the rooftops to Shorehams 11th century, grade I listed village church. On the second floor are two further smaller bedrooms, two attic spaces and a small bathroom. These rooms would make excellent children’s or guest rooms and there may be scope, subject to planning to make the attic spaces en-suites or walk-in wardrobes. This is undoubtedly a jewel in Shoreham’s crown as it is one of the loveliest houses in one of the most convenient locations in the village. Anyone who loves early 20th century, arts and crafts or art deco architecture will fall in love with number seven, and with some considered and careful renovation this could be the modern family home of your dreams.

Clayton Priory, London Road, Hassocks Clayton Priory is Listed Grade II*, being of particularly important ‘historic and architectural interest’, and is a superb example of a classic Regency Country House. The property is understood to date from 1820, designed by John Biagio Rebecca for a Brighton merchant called Robert Podmore. The house, originally named New Priory, instantly gained recognition in the area for its fine architectural design and was mentioned in the 1835 Horsfield edition of History and Antiquities of the County of Sussex as “... and elegant and commodious mansion on an elevated situation...” Externally, the main double-fronted eastern facade is typical of the Regency style, with symmetrical sash windows, a classical pediment and a fine entrance portico with fluted ionic columns. To the southern side of the house is a colonnade of Doric columns extending along the whole of the ground floor, over which is the Latin inscription ‘Sola in Deo Salvs’, which translates as ‘Only in God is our Salvation. There is also a swimming pool and an orangery. The interiors of Clayton Priory are of similar elegance, the centrepiece being the magnificent oval reception hall, with its Imperial staircase and glass dome skylight. The doors are of fine mahogany, four of which are carved and follow the lines of the walls. Further points of note are the plaster panelling and the elegant cornicing and plasterwork to the principal reception rooms.

UP my street
UP MY STREET: THIS MONTH WE SPEAK TO RICHARD ZINZAN ABOUT WHERE HE LIVES AND WHY HE LOVES IT. Richard Zinzan is Co-owner and Director at award-winning architects ARCH-angels WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I live in Queen’s Park... not on the park but just on the other side of the houses that face it. Our house - a 4 bedroom end of terrace - was built in 1929. The park is seconds away, Kemp Town and the beach a 5/10mins stroll down the hill. Walking into town is so simple too... We have gardens front and back and can park outside the house... It’s a great area with nice people and good pubs. HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN BRIGHTON? I came to Brighton in 1996 to study. After a brief spell back in London for a year I came back in 2000. My partner already lived here but I don’t think I would have chosen anywhere else significantly different; although I had been toying with the idea of Sydney, Australia! WHERE DO YOU SHOP LOCALLY? We use the shops in Kemp Town... Brampton’s butchers, Proto Green Grocers, The Real Patisserie, The Cherry Tree Deli and Butlers Wine on Queens Park Road. TELL US ABOUT YOUR GARDEN? We have a small garden but it feels much bigger than it actually is as we benefit from the houses that back on to us having very big gardens! Our garden is low maintenance and full of architectural plants. In July we were part of an open garden trail to raise money for the Sussex Macmillan cancer centre. In the past we have opened to raise money for the Sussex Beacon. WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED ABOUT YOUR PROPERTY SINCE LIVING THERE? The whole house has been renovated from top to bottom in the last 10 years. First with a loft conversion to form the 4th bedroom. The ground floor was remodelled 5yrs ago to form an open plan living space. More recently the main bathroom was redesigned. You can see more on our website... www.aaarchitects.co.uk/ gallery/407/ WHICH OTHER AREAS OF THE CITY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN? I quite like the area of Clifton Hill and Seven Dials. We’d love to live in a new build that we designed ourselves but sites in the city are few and far between and we are not yet ready to move out to the countryside.
IF YOU WERE MAYOR WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO IMPROVE THE CITY? Like any other city the usual things could be improved...cleaning, refuse collections etc. There are many potential sites in Brighton and Hove that need developing to provide a different range of services from community use, leisure, to residential. Within our practice we are always looking at sites and suggesting ways to improve them. In desperate need of attention is the upgrade of the seafront between the Pier and the Marina! WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO EAT AND DRINK IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD? For drinks and easy food the pubs in Hanover are great. Kemp Town has good coffee shops and places to eat: The Red Roaster, The Wooden Belly, The Ginger Dog, Busby and Wilds, Paval, Brighton Rocks, Black Dove… WHAT SPORT OR LEISURE ACTIVITY DO YOU PURSUE LOCALLY? Running to the Marina and back with my personal trainer Ty Paul. Twice a week you can see me running up and down the steps on the sea front. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO EAT AND DRINK IN TOWN? 64 Degrees, Cote, Coal Shed, Myhotel, Chilli Pickle, Yum Yum Ninja, Riddle and Finns. WHERE DO YOU GO FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION? The Pass at South Lodge Hotel, Horsham. Or the Coal Shed. WHERE DO YOU ALWAYS TAKE VISITORS? Brighton Pier, The Royal Pavilion, the Museum, the North Laine, the flea markets/antique shops. IF YOU ARE HEADING OUT OF TOWN WHERE DO YOU GO? Lewes, pubs and plant nurseries in the surrounding villages. Once in a while we go to Glyndebourne to the opera. IF NOT BRIGHTON, WHERE WOULD YOU LIVE? I wouldn’t mind a pied-à-terre in central London but not to live there full time... Barcelona would be my first choice if I had to live outside of Brighton!

LEGAL matters
MAKE SURE YOUR WILL REPRESENTS YOUR RELATIONSHIP “Many of us who don’t have a Will are in danger of leaving our loved one in the lurch”
Portfolio have teamed up with Brighton’s oldest law firm to bring you a monthly insight into the latest legal issues, with top tips and advice.
I
f you are not married or in a civil partnership, the benefits of making a Will are manifold and especially important where you and your partner share property and/or children. You will want to ensure your partner is looked after if you die. A Will gives you peace of mind that your assets, such as your share of your home, will be passed to your partner if that is what you intend. If you don’t make a Will your surviving partner has no status under the Intestacy Rules – which would then apply - so your assets could end up with relatives instead. It is estimated that one in six couples living together are not married or in a civil partnership, so many of us who don’t have a Will are in danger of leaving our loved one in the lurch.
The advantages of making a Will in those circumstances are obvious. But it is a lesser-known fact that your Will may end up not being worth the paper it is printed on if you later decide to tie the knot legally. It may be the ultimate show of love and affection, but getting married or entering into a civil partnership is likely to invalidate any Wills made by a couple before they got hitched. In my own experience, there are a number of couples out there who do not realise this, and who, post marriage/civil partnership, will have actually been intestate for some time. One couple thought their Will would surely stand if they were giving everything to each other anyway and would not want to change that. Not so – you need to make a new Will. The Intestacy Rules are not good for married couples either.
Luckily, there is a solution – if you employ a smidgeon of foresight when making the Will and include these words: ‘This Will shall not be revoked by my marriage/civil partnership with ………’ it will remain valid a er the nuptial day. A note of warning for the more fickle among us, however: this method won’t apply if you have a change of heart and decide to get hitched to someone else!

HOME AND AWAY PROPERTY IS BOOMING IN UK COASTAL AREAS AND HOLIDAY HOTSPOTS AS THE GROWING TREND OF SECOND HOME OWNERSHIP CONTINUES … WE LOOK AT THIS TREND, AND HAVE SOME EXPERT ADVICE FROM PROPERTY PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING FINANCIAL, LEGAL, ESTATE AGENTS AND ACCOUNTANTS ABOUT HOW TO MAKE A SECOND PROPERTY WORK FOR YOU.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION One of the first factors to consider when you’re looking to purchase a second home or a holiday home is the location. Whether your second home or holiday home is for business or pleasure, location is a hugely important factor. Transport links, particularly to London are increasingly essential. As more and more people are choosing to holiday in the UK, many seaside coastal areas are becoming popular hotspots. SECOND HOME HOTSPOTS There will always be hotspots for second homes, and with very good reason. A lovely home in a beautiful location appeals to us all. Always do your research about hotspots and remember that the areas close to today’s hotspots may well be tomorrow’s even hotter spots. Local Estate Agents will be the first people to notice trends in the
popularity of areas so use them and take their advice. The south west has traditionally been the most popular UK location for second homes with Cornwall topping the league. But the south east now has over a quarter of the country’s second homes, with locations within commuting distance to London (and London itself) being especially popular. Sussex really does tick all the boxes with an almost perfect combination of coast, areas of outstanding natural beauty, an impressive range of property, and exceptional transport links. INVESTMENT The trend in second homes as investment properties has been accelerated by the recent changes in pension legislation allowing people to manage their own pension fund. Clearly property appeals as a safe investment, which can be realised when required. But there are other factors at play.
HOLIDAY IN THE UK The combination of increased costs of travel and improvements in average temperatures in the UK has tempted people who may previously have considered buying abroad, to opt to buy a holiday home or second home in the south of England instead. The convenience of travelling to their home is one of the primary reasons given by second home owners buying in the UK. In addition there is no language barriers to confuse the buying process, or indeed any eventual sale. All in all, it seems that second homes are holding up as the perfect combination of an investment that also yields pleasure and that good quality holiday lets in the right locations may potentially achieve higher yields than properties let on short hold tenancies.

SECOND home We talk to four property professionals about what to do when considering a second property Accountant Comment
Jo White, Tax Consultant, Spofforths on the tax implications on owning a second property When you buy a property you may not be thinking about the tax. However, when you come to sell the property, or indeed decide to let it out, there could be some tax costs involved. When you dispose of your main home, there is often no Capital Gains Tax liability (CGT) as you are able to claim main residence relief against any increase in value. For a second property that is not your home, any profit you make will not benefit from this relief. In some circumstances it is possible to elect for a property to be considered as your main home for tax purposes. With careful planning this could mean a
Estate Agent Comment
Richard James, Estate Agent on investment properties An investment property enhances your life as well as your lifestyle. Second homes and holiday homes are an emotional as well as an economic investment, with first timers looking for a weekend or holiday bolt-hole to escape work stress; while institutional buyers base decisions predominantly on yield – and in both cases there’s a great return. Changes to pension policy, allowing savers to take their whole pot at 55, makes a nest-egg property a really attractive proposition and the ‘holiday homer’ always has the opportunity to sell or rent out to release short term money. Demand for second homes in Hove in on the increase. The trend set by royalty in the 1800s coming to Brighton to ‘take the sea air’ continues. The therapeutic nature of

seaside living, in a vibrant community that offers grand Regency apartments, smart Victorian terraces, impressive detached homes, surrounded by beautiful countryside, is still one of the biggest pulls for property investors as there’s something for everyone. We have a consistent yet increasing demand for property in central Hove and Hove Park. Central Hove more so for the views of the sea and the walking distance to all the amenities people come to expect from a seaside resort. Claire Cook, Talk Money on making mortgage choices Many people consider buying a second property as an alternative to traditional investments. This can be either to let the property out, or to use as a second home. Lenders consider both of these very differently. Not all lenders offer these types of mortgages and those that do will have very specific criteria. It is essential to take independent advice not only to ensure you get the best deal, but also to make sure you are approaching the right lender for your circumstances. Sometimes these transactions can involve two

property which has a larger inherent gain could be sold with minimal tax costs, even if you haven’t lived there for the whole period you owned it. An election can only be made where there is a change in combination of residences and it has to be made to HM Revenue & Customs in writing within two years. Once the initial election is made it is possible to change your main residence for tax purposes any number of times. mortgages, one to raise the deposit and one on the property you are purchasing. Each lender has to be happy with the lending on the other property. By taking professional advice you can avoid any pitfalls. Insurance requirements will also be different to your primary residence as your property may have vacant periods. All of these things can be dealt with straightforwardly if you take professional advice. www.talkmoney.co.uk
Sally Peake, Partner - Property team, Rix & Kay on taking professional advice Buying a holiday home near the sea can be a dream come true, but it can also be a good investment. While the call of the seagulls and the fresh salty air is fresh in your mind remember that you need to take proper advice. You are buying property so you need to take proper advice from lawyers and surveyors to see if the investment is a sound one. Lawyers perform all of the relevant checks for you (and your mortgage lender) to make sure that the property is
good security for a mortgage and can be sold in the future. They also help you to decide if you need any extra permits eg planning or landlord’s consent for any works the property needs. You should bear in mind that just because the property is a holiday home does not mean that the usual rules don’t apply - and remember not to get seduced by the idea. NEW HOMES in Brighton & Hove
BRAND NEW HOMES A DIVERSE CHOICE OF NEW-BUILD HOMES TO TEMPT HOUSE-HUNTERS IN BRIGHTON & HOVE
T
hough dominated by period property, Brighton & Hove currently offers a great selection of new-build homes for house-hunters who have set their heart on moving into somewhere brand new. The ‘blank canvas’ appeal of being the first person ever to live in a property is a major reason that some people choose to purchase a new-build property, but it’s not the only one by any means. For some, it is contemporary design that draws them to a new home while for others it is the benefit of a DIY-free, low-maintenance property covered by warranties and guarantees. In an eco-aware city such as Brighton & Hove, the energy efficiency of a new-build home is an important consideration for many, with low To find out further information please visit us at the Telegraph sponsored What House? consumption bringing benefits to the environment as well as buyers’ pockets. The nature of the city of Brighton & Hove, bounded by the sea and the protected area of the South Downs National Park, means that these days, large-scale new development is a rarity. Old homes are sometimes demolished or converted to accommodate new development and in other cases, developers often utilise ‘brownfield’ sites that were previously used for commercial or industrial purposes. With such short supply of new homes in Brighton & Hove, if you are considering buying a new-build home in the city, you’re advised to act quickly to secure one that meets your needs.

DOES A FIXED RATE MORTGAGE
SUIT YOU?
Claire Cook from Independent Financial Advisors Talk Money, guides us through some of her top tips on finding the right mortgage product for your circumstances point soon, or you may receive bonuses and wish to use these to reduce your mortgage. Flexibility is one thing most fixed rates do not offer. They are literally set for a fixed period of time, and if you repay over a certain amount before the end of the fixed rate period, you could be charged a penalty. If you need flexibility, tracker rate mortgages are often a better option. These rates are variable and charged at a certain percentage above the Bank of England base rate for a set period of time, some track for the whole term of the mortgage.
C
urrently most new borrowers are taking fixed rate mortgages. The reason being that the fixed and variable tracker pays rates are very similar, but the tracker rates will probably be increasing at some point in the near future. Taking a fixed rate will secure your position for 2,3,5 years or maybe longer. Also, unusually, in the current market you may not be paying more for the privilege of a fixed rate. This is fine for many, but other people have a changing situation and need more flexibility. For example you may want to sell your house at some
Flexibility is one thing most fixed rates do not offer The rates are competitive and many have no early repayment charges (or penalties). This allows you to overpay on your mortgage or totally repay it at anytime. If you overpay, some offer the facility to withdraw the overpayment at a later time or take payment holidays. Some have offset accounts linked to them. This is an investment account linked to your mortgage. It is a place where you can put your savings and rather than earning interest, the
lender reduces the amount they charge on your mortgage. This is very efficient for higher or additional rate taxpayers who pay a higher tax rate on any interest they earn. Many people use these accounts to save tax money, or to effectively pay off their mortgage but without totally committing their funds, they can still withdraw the money at any point. Every person’s needs are different, so the trick is to find the right mortgage to suit your own situation. Fixed rates mortgages are really competitive right now, however, in the right circumstances flexible mortgages can not only make life easier, they can save a substantial amount of money over the mortgage term. To find out what type of mortgage would suit you, to discuss remortgaging your current property or purchasing a new one, please call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help. VINTAGE REVIVAL
VINTAGE STYLE IS AN ECLECTIC STYLE, WHICH IS NEITHER PREDICTABLE OR TRADITIONAL AND THERE ARE NO SET RULES ABOUT HOW TO CREATE THIS VERY RELAXED LOOK. THIS IS A LOOK THAT IS EASY TO LIVE WITH AND DOESN’T HAVE TO COST A FORTUNE.
V

intage furniture can actually represent excellent value, while offering quality workmanship. Buying this kind of furniture means there is no self-assembly, not a trace of MDF and the pieces you find will be utterly individual. Vintage style offers you opportunities to demonstrate an exclusive look that cannot be had from brand-new pieces and of course no one else will have the same things or the same combination of things as you. Creating vintage style involves choosing the best elements of previous decades and mixing them with new, to
create a look that is both beautiful and quirky. The furniture can be a mixture of styles while china and glass can be mismatched. The great thing about vintage furniture is that there is something to be found to appeal to everyone. A house will feel timeless, pleasing and harmonious. Tracking down pieces of vintage furniture does require patience and effort, but time spent browsing is great fun. There are some good shops locally which specialise in all things vintage. When looking for vintage pieces it is good to remember that periods and styles do not matter nearly as much as what you like. So aim to buy things you love, rather than
ones with intrinsic antique ‘value’. Old furniture will have flaws, blemishes and imperfections but these signs should be seen as qualities - proof of time and individuality. By buying vintage furniture, you are helping the environment by recycling. Chances are the vintage furniture you buy would have been around for generations and they will continue to do so again, this time with you. Try buying pieces that are not too damaged, especially if you don’t have a lot of time and money for restoration. Equally it is important to avoid overly perfect or ‘faux’ old pieces, like furniture that has been painted or repainted, then intentionally scratched to

INTERIORS
look old and worn. With the increasing popularity of vintage painted furniture, there seem to be a large amount of ‘faux’ old pieces and truly authentic vintage pieces are becoming more scarce. To distinguish between real old and fake old, look for pieces that are substantial and have some weight to them - pieces that are not too fragile but possess real craftsmanship. Vintage furniture with a real history and a defect or two are more appealing as the beauty is in the imperfection and the charm is in the flaw. Be choosy when visiting vintage furniture stores and don’t fill your home with too many things, as it can become cluttered quickly. Recycled treasures need space in order to fully show off their beautiful imperfections. The answer is to keep things simple. REPAINT, REPURPOSE AND REIMAGINE Repaint, repurpose and reimagine your vintage buys - an application of paint can often transform a piece of furniture and something old can easily be turned into something new, sometimes for very little money. A coat of paint can cover up dents, scratches and veneer problems. However, if you are buying antique furniture be careful
not to paint a nice piece of mahogany, oak or walnut as these usually have a lovely grain and colour. A good polish will keep your antique pieces looking fresh. Buying vintage furniture is not just about value but about obtaining a unique piece that adds character to a room. Re-purpose pieces - for example an old bookshelf can be used not only to house books, instead filled with pretty china can look very attractive whilst being practical. If you are buying sofas and chairs they may well need to be upholstered. Make sure the seating you buy is both comfortable as it is good-looking. If you like the piece don’t worry too much about minor repairs as quick and easy alterations such as adding a new cover or a fabric throw will hide any minor flaws. If you can’t find a set of dining chairs then consider buying an assortment of single chairs and for a quirky look upholster them in different fabrics. The most important thing to remember when buying chairs is to inspect them with care and weigh up potential repairs. There is little point in buying a piece that cost as much again to be restored. Using vintage furniture in your home is the ultimate form of recycling and it also offers a greener, more creative solution.
VINTAGE FURNITURE WITH A REAL HISTORY AND A DEFECT OR TWO IS MORE APPEALING AS THE BEAUTY IS IN THE IMPERFECTION AND THE CHARM IS IN THE FLAW

SEPTEMBER gardening
Into the Garden September sees the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. More often than not the days can sometimes still remain warm. This is a time to grab the pleasures of the last days left before autumn descends fully upon us. There is still plenty to be done in our gardens.
Things to do in the garden this month
I
f you have been looking after your hanging baskets and containers by watering and feeding them regularly then you may still have an autumn show of blooms. This is a good time to pay a visit to your local garden centre to select your spring bulbs and plants. Erysimum and forget-me-knots mixed with tulip bulbs will provide your spring border with contrasting height and colour. The beautiful Japanese anemones are one of the treats of the September garden. Japanese anemones come in several pinks and beautiful pure white. They are easy to grow in most garden soil and will add grace and charm to end of season borders. These can quickly spread but you can remove any excess plants by regularly digging them up. The late September border draws on other striking plants like ‘Verbena bonariensis’ - a
beautiful tall elegant plant and if you leave the heads of the verbena over winter to self seed, you will be rewarded with many more plants next year. Another autumn perennial is ‘Rudbeckia fulgida’ ‘Goldstrum’ - a wonderful plant with black-eyed daisy like flowers which will continue to flower right through autumn and even into winter if the weather is mild. Plant these in blocks for maximum impact. This is a plant that will tolerate light shade and is one of gardens top ten perennials. There are a great many plants that will continue to flower well into autumn, providing our gardens with colour and fragrance. Attention to detail will keep your garden vibrant and interesting in the weeks ahead By Tara de la Motte Editor of Sussex Homes & Gardens www.sussex-homes.co.uk
n Continue dead heading. n Cut back summer perennials which have finished flowering. n Move geraniums indoors before first frosts. n Plant spring bulbs. n Establish a new lawn. n Sow hardy annuals for spring. n Put a coat of preservative on decks and other wooden furniture to protect against winter rain and bad weather. This is a time to enjoy autumn planting as warm soil and more certain rainfall will make the ground more workable for planting both perennials and biennials. Plants that are planted now will have time to establish before the close of year. So take pleasure in your September garden and extend the summer before the days get shorter, as October approaches.

ernie Ecclestone is a force of nature. Even at the age of 82, he strides up and down the Formula 1 pit lane and the paddock area, with the same boundless energy that has marked his reign over F1 racing for the past three decades and counting. Sitting down inside his small, unguarded private tent in the paddock area behind pit lane, it was fascinating to watch Ecclestone at work. Shortly before noon, various celebrity guests - British actors Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, billionaire Cirque de Soleil founder Guy Laliberté and a gaggle of movie stars, billionaires and the odd Prince - arrived to pay tribute to him in much the same manner as foreign dignitaries might come to greet a world leader or royal head of state. This is a fitting comparison, however, as Ecclestone has ruled over the sport in a benevolent, iron-fisted way that has seen him transform a formerly rag-tag operation composed of factional racing tribes into a multi-billion dollar global business empire. Unlike national potentates, however, Ecclestone has little need for ceremony. There is no excess baggage or artifice to his world or manner. He speaks in plain terms using an economy of words to state precisely what he thinks and feels. He has long sealed deals with a single handshake and adheres to an old-world expectation that one’s word is one’s bond. Bernie, as he has been known for years to people within F1, likes to come to the point and has never seen the need to embellish anything. It’s that kind of brutal efficiency that has marked his time as ringmaster of the Formula One circus that has become the greatest sporting show on earth. He was the first to identify the ultimate potential of television to turn F1 racing into a world-wide spectacle, and in the process has made billions from his management and ownership of the sport’s commercial activities. Bernie and his partners sold 63.4% and effective control of the business to the British private equity giant, CVC Capital Partners in 2006, a deal that was bankrolled by the Royal Bank Of Scotland, despite CVC sitting on assets of £46 billion. To date, CVC have made an estimated $4 billion from its foray into the pit lane, from dividends and by selling stock in the privately owned F1 business to companies such as BlackRock, the American investment giant, and Norges, PORTFOLIO 59

a Norwegian state-owned fund. In 2011, Murdoch’s News Corporation tried to take control of F1 but was rebuffed by Ecclestone. Now the US giant is eyeing one last payday from F1 and its remaining 36% stake has been placed on the auction block and several media companies are itching to get involved. In pole position sits Liberty Global, the American conglomerate controlled by billionaire John Malone, which last year scooped up Britain’s Virgin Media for $15 billion. A 15.3% stake owned by the rump of the collapsed Lehman Brothers Wall Street bank is also up for grabs. This global brand generates over £1 billion a year from television and merchandise rights and all this was started by a former used car salesman who has been pulling the strings of F1 for over three decades. Ecclestone’s business philosophy is essentially one of challenging you to make a deal with him and see how you fare. After all, when in 2000 he (via his family trust) sold off a 75% stake in F1’s marketing company, his family trust earned $3.37 billion yet still owned 25 percent of the operation while still retaining effective management control of the sport. It’s the kind of deal that any business school ought to use as a master case study in the art of outmanoeuvring your opponent. The German newsmagazine Der
Spiegel recently described this deal as a “brilliant coup.” But today the master dealmaker is under assault on several fronts. In November 2011, Ecclestone was called upon to testify in a Munich courtroom in the trial of Gerhard Gribkowsky, the former BayernLB banker in Germany who oversaw the 2006 sale of F1 to CVC, which netted the Ecclestone family trust Bambino Holdings, a reported $478 million profit. Gribkowsky, the BayernLB’s chief risk officer, was accused of accepting a bribe of $44m (£27m) to deliberately undervalue the shares of F1 so that the bank sold the shares for $800 million rather than the more plausible value of $2.8 billion, as has been charged in court documents. Gribkowsky was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to an 8 and a half year prison sentence.
Ecclestone has ruled over the sport in a benevolent, iron-fisted way
Ecclestone admits that his family trust Bambino Holdings paid the sum to Gribkowsky but denies it was a bribe, testifying in court that it was the result of a subtle “shakedown” on him by Mr Gribkowsky, who was effectively blackmailing the billionaire Briton by threatening to present “false evidence” about him to British tax authorities. In May, the influential Munich daily Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that Munich prosecutors had decided to file charges against Ecclestone relating to the Gribkowsky bribery case and that the indictment would be handed down sometime in August as soon as the complicated legal documents could be translated into English. Despite this, Ecclestone appeared as cool as could be in the face of any possible criminal proceedings against him in Germany. He was looking forward to attending his daughter Tamara’s wedding in southern France and absolutely serene in his self-belief that he had done nothing wrong. Given his unparalleled success in defeating virtually every adversary he has ever faced, why should anyone doubt the man now? I got the opportunity to sit down with the enigma known as Bernie and posed a few searching questions, always with one foot near the door in case a rapid exit was required.

CELEBRITY interview
MR. ECCLESTONE, MANY OF YOUR ADMIRERS AS WELL AS DETRACTORS WOULD TEND TO AGREE ON ONE POINT THAT YOU ARE GENERALLY A MAN WITHOUT FEAR. DO YOU HAVE ANY FEARS? No. It could well be one of my greatest assets...or strengths. I won’t be threatened or intimidated by anyone and I’ve always been prepared to do what is necessary to defend my interests.
Amongst the team owners, nobody cared or wanted to take responsibility for organising the sport - they just wanted to race their cars and try to win races
WAS THERE A POINT WHEN YOU ARRIVED IN FORMULA ONE THAT YOU FELT IF NO ONE ELSE WAS GOING TO BRING ORGANIZATION AND BETTER MANAGEMENT TO THE SPORT, THAT YOU WERE GOING TO DO IT? When I arrived in the sport it was a very amateurish show. Amongst the team owners, nobody cared or wanted to take responsibility for organising the sport - they just wanted to race their cars and try to win races. It wasn’t good for the drivers, the teams, or the fans the way things were going. But you need to have proper management if you’re going to move forward. I tried to do what I thought was good for the sport and also what seemed necessary.
PURSUIT OF HIGH PROFILE INDIVIDUALS RANGING FROM GERMANY’S FORMER PRESIDENT CHRISTIAN WULFF TO ULI HOENESS, PRESIDENT OF THE BAYERN MUNICH FOOTBALL CLUB? I haven’t followed the news concerning this “hostile climate” so I can’t really speculate. But I have a lot of faith in justice systems around the world even though there were cases in the past where that faith wasn’t justified in some countries. I think in the end officials in each country’s judicial system will do what they believe is right because if they do something bad to somebody it’s on their conscience for the rest of their lives. I don’t think people go out of their way to pursue people without cause. Sometimes it’s reported that way but I don’t believe that’s the case. I’m old school. It’s the way people have to run businesses today compared to how they used to. I never knew about corporate ¬governance back then, different committees, ethics committees and God knows what else boards to report to. I never reported to any. I didn’t know about any of these things back then. Probably, if I had of done, I wouldn’t have lasted as long as I lasted. And we will be more restricted as time goes on. That’s how the world is. It’s coming that way. I don’t agree with it. What we are slowly but surely managing to do is get rid of entrepreneurs. Getting rid of people who think outside the box.”
I have 100% confidence in the German judicial system
MAX MOSLEY’S REPUTATION HAS SUFFERED IN RECENT YEARS WITH THE SCANDAL INVOLVING THE NEWS OF THE WORLD REPORT (INVOLVING CALL GIRLS)? DO YOU FEEL MOSLEY’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SPORT HAS BEEN UNFAIRLY TAINTED BY ALL THIS? Absolutely. That’s why he was so determined to defend himself against the reports and pursued matters in the courts. He felt his personal rights and privacy had been violated and it was nobody else’s business. Max and I have always been very close. We were more friends than partners. He brought a legal background to the business and many other things which helped the sport evolve. With the warm up questions out of the way, l girded my loins as l wanted to know about the court case. This case is not just vital to Bernie’s personal freedom but to the entire CVC plan to suck one last payday out of F1, plans that are now on hold until after the trial. DOES IT TROUBLE YOU THAT YOU MAY BE FACING CHARGES IN GERMANY, A COUNTRY WHOSE STATE PROSECUTORS MAY BE ENGAGED IN OVERZEALOUS
SO YOU HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT YOU WILL BE TREATED FAIRLY WHATEVER COMES TO PASS IN GERMANY? Yes. Absolutely. I have 100% confidence in the German judicial system. I am not worried in the least because I have told the truth. DO YOU FEEL IN RETROSPECT THAT YOUR DECISION TO TESTIFY IN THE GRIBKOWSKY TRIAL IN GERMANY IN 2011, MIGHT HAVE BEEN A STRATEGIC MISTAKE IN THAT YOUR TESTIMONY MAY AT SOME POINT BE USED AGAINST YOU? I was asked to appear and I appeared...Anything I said at the trial was the truth so I have no reason to believe or expect that anything could be turned against me. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE GERMAN LEGAL SYSTEM WAS TILTED AGAINST GRIBOWSKY? PORTFOLIO 61

CELEBRITY interview
No. I don’t think so but I’m not really familiar with the German system. I do know that Gribkowsky changed his defence several times. WHAT HAVE YOUR GERMAN LAWYERS TOLD YOU ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT SHOULD YOU BE CHARGED IN THIS MATTER? Nothing. They haven’t briefed me because you can’t make decisions if there are no charges or issues to deal with. So it’s quite normal to wait until there is some reason to react. But I am not in any way ashamed of anything I have done in this case. I am not at all troubled or worried and we will have to wait until matters develop further. DO YOU NOT THINK IN RETROSPECT THAT YOU WOULD OF HANDLED THINGS DIFFERENTLY GIVEN YOUR TESTIMONY THAT GRIBKOWSKY WAS IN EFFECT SHAKING YOU DOWN FOR A PAYMENT, AND THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE GONE TO THE AUTHORITIES YOURSELF THE FIRST TIME YOU FELT HE WAS TRYING TO BLACKMAIL YOU? What happens in life - I don’t know whether it’s happened to you - but it’s happened to me quite a few times - it’s this wonderful thing called hindsight. But how useful is it?
posed for Playboy, and announced she was pregnant. Ecclestone paid his statuesque ex-wife Slavica, a reported $1.2 billion in a landmark divorce settlement in 2009. YOU HAVE LONG BEEN KNOWN FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO THE SPORT OF FORMULA ONE - SOME MIGHT EVEN DESCRIBE YOU AS A WORKAHOLIC. BUT YOU’RE ALSO A FAMILY MAN WHOSE DAUGHTERS TAMARA AND PETRA ARE NOW BOTH ADULTS. HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON YOUR DAYS WHEN YOU WERE RAISING YOUR DAUGHTERS? I didn’t devote as much time to them as I would have liked. I never neglected my daughters - quite the opposite - but I suppose I could have and should have spent more time with them. I have no regrets though about the amount of work I put into the sport. This is what I needed to do with my life. But when they’re no longer there for you to look after you always think how you could have done things a bit differently.
it’s this wonderful thing called hindsight. But how useful is it?
As you see from his responses, Bernie is a seasoned professional at this interviewing game and gives you just enough to shut you up but never enough to draw any solid conclusions. His calm outer shell is totally impenetrable and he has a steely front that is a marvel to behold. I lost interest in the questions to be honest and was just overawed with his method of controlling every word that comes out of his mouth – which of course, matches his business style of total control. One can only presume that delegation is not a word in his lexicon. Bernie, who dropped out of school at 16 and, after organizing complex broadcasting deals for Formula One, took over most rights in 1997. The 83-year-old, who lives in a penthouse above his office, was forced to step down from the board of Delta Tepco, which manages the Formula One Group of companies, amid the different legal cases against him. His family life is no less complicated - his second daughter Petra gave birth to a baby girl in 2013, while Tamara got married in Southern France after a failed union with a man who then stole her Lamborghini,
WERE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT TAMARA POSED FOR PLAYBOY MAGAZINE? No. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with that. It didn’t bother me at all.
YOU STARTED OUT IN BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH AND DEVELOPED A KNACK FOR MAKING MONEY. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO IMPART YOUR BUSINESS SENSE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS? No. I never felt it was necessary. It’s in their genes! They are both very intelligent and capable. Petra started a very good clothing business that was too good in terms of quality in a difficult market and it unfortunately didn’t work out. Now she’s into producing these clutch bags (Stark handbags) and doing very well with that. And Tamara is doing an incredible (hair-care products) line that is being sold in major stores all over the world. They’re both doing very well. They also do a lot of charity work, a lot of which you don’t hear about.
Bernie is a seasoned professional at this interviewing game and gives you just enough to shut you up but never enough to draw any solid conclusions
DO THEY EVER COME TO YOU FOR BUSINESS ADVICE? No. I let them do their own thing. Overall they’ve made some very good investments and I don’t worry that they can’t manage on their own. They don’t make decisions casually.

CELEBRITY interview
YOUR DAUGHTERS HAVE BECOME CELEBRITIES OVER THE YEARS. DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO BE PROTECTIVE OF THEM? When it’s necessary I will defend them. They’re in the public eye and because of their name and so on they are going to pay a price for that. Doing television also exposes one to that. But they’re both old enough and bright enough to be able to handle things. They have strong personalities. As a father, I’m close to them but they don’t really need me to advise them on how to manage their lives and they don’t ask me to do that. (Smiles) HOW LONG CAN YOU GO ON WITH THIS IRON GRIP ON ONE OF THE MOST LUCRATIVE SPORTS IN THE WORLD? I’m going to be 84 at the end of this year so I am probably going to have to start to think, ‘Do I want to go into the 85th year doing what I’ve been doing for goddamn how many years. It’s something I’ll have to give some very serious thought to. The important thing is to know when you should hang the boxing gloves up. So you are not going to end up going into the ring and getting a good hiding. If I’m not here there will always be someone capable to do what I’m doing.
HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR LEGACY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FORMULA ONE INTO A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR OPERATION? All sports have developed and I took charge of things because they needed to be done and if it hadn’t been me, someone else would probably have brought Formula One forward. What we did was to make the necessary changes and I’m happy to have been part of that process. DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A LONG-TERM STRATEGY OR WAS IT MORE OF AN INCREMENTAL APPROACH TO YOUR MANAGEMENT OF FORMULA ONE? It was more a case of looking at things which needed to be improved. When I was running Brabham, I didn’t have any strategy for expanding the sport but I knew what had to be changed for the sake of the sport and making it a better product. That kind of thinking probably helped me when I began managing things and was able to make the changes we all knew had to be made. Later on I knew we had to expand beyond Europe and go to Asia and places like Singapore. YOU’VE LONG BEEN DESCRIBED AS A FEARSOME NEGOTIATOR AND MASTER DEALMAKER. WHEN DID YOU REALISE IN
LIFE THAT YOU HAD A PARTICULAR TALENT IN THIS AREA? It’s like being a singer or an artist. You’re born with certain gifts and you use them as best you can in life. You begin to learn and recognise that you have certain skills and aptitudes that you apply and use them to carry you forward. I don’t have any talent as an artist but I do have an awareness for business and what you need to bring to that world. It helps to know what you’re good at. WAS THERE ANY ONE PARTICULAR MOMENT WHERE IT STRUCK YOU THAT DEAL MAKING WAS SOMETHING IN WHICH YOU EXCELLED? No, no, no... Not really. Gradually I became better at it and then each new deal is another opportunity. But you should really ask the other people I’ve made deals with about what they think! Those that are still alive of course”. (Smiles) Since we interviewed Ecclestone, the German court case has been resolved. Not with a trial, not with an acquittal and not with a jail term but with a 60 million pound fine. The banker Ecclestone was accused of bribing, Gerhard Gribkowsky, is serving an 8 year jail term for that offence. PORTFOLIO 63

CITY NEWS Please note these are the personal views of our City Editor
New development uproar Yet another planning row has been fired up with the announcement of plans to build a 100 home housing estate just outside Ovingdean. Bristol based Lightwood Strategic have put forward plans for the development that will contain 40% affordable housing along with a playing field. MP for Brighton Kemptown, Simon Kirby, has spoken out against the plans saying: “The application will ruin the feel of Rottingdean, Woodingdean and Ovingdean as well as placing a huge strain on local services and infrastructure, such as local roads which are already under great pressure. I have been clear that the city council needs to look at brownfield sites, increasing the density at city centre locations where the existing infrastructure is already in place and looking again at sites like Shoreham Harbour before considering precious green spaces like Meadow Vale”. The only access road will be from Ovingdean Road along with paths linking to Falmer Road. James Sorrentino of Lightwood stated: “We genuinely want to create a fantastic scheme that will create a legacy
of somewhere really nice to live and if the council accept the plans, we could start work on the site by mid-2015, with the first residents moving in by the end of 2016.” The plans face quite a battle. Not only from vocal locals but the Campaign to Protect Rural England have filed an objection as it is too close to the National Park, stating that the only reason this area was not included in the original park was due to the schools playing field. Georgia Wrighton, Sussex CPR Director said: “While the land may not actually be in the National Park it starts just over the road. The only reason the land was not made part of the Park was because it was considered part of the school’s playing field. We think the development would ruin the surroundings which back on to the National Park and we will be registering our objections.” This will be the second attempt by the developer to get this consent through after withdrawing the original plan for 122 homes. Let battle commence.

Brighton TV Brighton is about to boast its own TV station, courtesy of Latest TV. Launching on August 28th, our great City will have a dedicated television channel that will be found on Freeview channel 8 and Virgin channel 159 as well as online. Latest TV will be accessible to over 400,000 people across Greater Brighton with a policy of ‘You make it, we show it’ where the viewers can be the stars.
Bill Smith, founder of the channel said: ‘Latest TV will have the right ingredients to make Brighton Rock! We have been fighting for Brighton to have its own TV station for years and it is so exciting to see this dream become a reality. I believe that TV should be democratic so as well as the Latest team producing top-class television, we will also be proud to shows films and videos made by the viewers, from Brighton & Hove to Adur and Worthing’
Latest TV will be on air 24 hours a day, seven days a week with news and sport at the heart of the channel. Broadcasting from the Latest Studios in Manchester Street, here is an opportunity for all residents to get involved and local businesses to sponsor programmes. Business Director Angi Mariani said: “Local TV has the potential to reach audiences like no other form of media. For years television has been out of reach for many companies but that is now changing. Whether the business is large or small, local TV has to package to suit.” For further sponsorship opportunities, contact angi@thelatest.co.uk
The council are at it again Good idea – protect the bridge at Wilbury Villas from the increasing damage caused by HGV’s crossing. Bad idea – spend a fortune on a width restriction scheme that is so tight that most cars larger than a Mini cannot pass through it. The gap is 2 metres wide meaning that the UK’s most popular cars, such as the BMW 3-seies and the Nissan Quashqai cannot get through but your standard Transit van can. It would appear that the Greens are determined to waste as much money as possible to ensure the next council are skint from day 1.

Will the pier reappear? The West Pier Trust is becoming rather bullish now that work has started on the i360, or the doughnut on a stick, as it has become known. Members have until September 12th to respond and the consultation will be opened up to the wider public after that. The Trust has floated three possible options: 1: Do nothing and allow the structure to deteriorate and eventually fall into the sea. 2: Seek a ‘promenade pier’ allowing people to walk over the water but with little commercial activity.
3: Seek a fully commercial solution with a full pier with commercial and leisure activities. Such a bullish approach to the possible salvation of this historic pier, that was disgracefully allowed to fall apart, is based on the projected income the Trust will make from the doughnut. Before they count their chickens let us not forget that our illustrious council borrowed £36 million from central government to build this monstrosity on the basis that they would earn more back than they have to pay in interest for the loan. What could possibly go wrong?
New office space Developers have submitted plans for desperately needed new office space in Davigdor Road in Hove. Hyde Housing wants to demolish all the existing buildings and construct 700 sqm of office space in addition to 76 new residential units. Following the ruling that office spaces can now be converted into residential units, Brighton is in urgent need of office space as it is companies that are the backbone of the City. Little point in developing mass housing unless the people have jobs to go to.

Politics really is a drag Cabaret performer and Producer of the Alternative Pantomime, Brian Ralphe, is to stand as an independent candidate for Central Hove at the next election. Ralphe said: “I am doing it as l am anti-Europe and currently disagree with a lot of what Cameron is doing. I think the time has come when we need politicians who do not toe the line”. If elected, he would remove the cycle lanes which he claims have destroyed the environment and have led to more traffic. He would also never have backed the i360, which he claims is a white elephant. He said: “I picked Central Hove and l don’t want the Greens to take both seats and start making a mess of the place as they have done in Brighton”.
From bottom to top A refreshingly delightful story emerged last week of 23 year old Sophie Egeler who, as a fifteen year old, took a work experience job at a model agency in Hove called Fresh Agents. She has just bought out the company and now owns it! Sophie admits that choosing to work after her A-levels rather than attend university was a risk but one that proved to be a very wise decision. She said: ‘There was a lot of pressure to go to Uni but l was so passionate about the industry and working, l decided to skip it – and it’s paid off”
London road ‘oasis’ Work has started on much needed improvements to the public space in front of St Bartholomew’s Church in Brighton. Work will include opening up Providence Place Gardens for people to sit and relax, a new street frontage along Providence Place and the creation of a small square at the bottom of Ann Street with public seating. Councillor Lizzie Deane stated: “Improving the areas in front of Bart’s Church is part of a the wider regeneration of the London Road area which includes the newly restored Open Market, the Level, the redevelopment of the former Co-op departments store and the Brighton station area development”.
Newhaven ferry in doubt The Newhaven ferry service to Dieppe has been running since 1847 but its future looks to be in doubt. The service is underwritten by the French to the tune of £20 million a year but with losses continuing to climb, the future looks bleak. Competition from the channel tunnel and the stormy seas that often make the crossing unpleasant have added to its troubles. This would be yet another blow to Newhaven itself, as it is one of the main employers in the town and hundreds of jobs rely on the service and it could spell the end of the railway line between Lewes and Seaford. It seems safe for another year but there are grave doubts about it after that.

HOW TO RETAIN STAFF
With the recovery building up a head of steam, employees may start to feel more confident about changing jobs. The key to any successful business is to retain the key staff and maintain morale. Amanda Menahem. HR Director of Hastings Direct, gives her tips on avoiding the nightmare of losing valuable members of the team.
T
he news on employment, released in mid-July, was certainly welcome. In the three months to May 2014, the proportion of people aged 16 to 64 in work reached 73.1 per cent, up 0.5 points on the previous quarter, matching the UK’s highest recorded employment rate. It is fantastic news for the economy, the Government and job-seekers, but the trend also throws up some challenges for employers. When people feel confident about their chances of getting a better job, it becomes harder to keep the staff who are so vital to the business. So how can you ensure you keep the turnover of staff to a minimum? We’ve all the heard the line that people leave bosses not companies and in my experience this is absolutely true. Of course its easy to think its all about money, but providing you pay people at a fair market rate, increasing pay further is rarely a solution to keeping people if other factors in the workplace aren’t right. Here are my top tips for all you bosses out there…. 1. Make your people feel important. As human beings we all like to feel important and valued. The way you do this as a boss is by showing genuine interest. You should know the names of your team members children, partners, know what they did at the weekend etc and show genuine care for their well-being. This also means being flexible and showing trust. Assume the best of your people.
2. Say thank you. One of the most valuable rewards costs nothing at all. A simple ‘thank you’ or ‘well done’ can work wonders. Of course, it isn’t quite as straightforward as plying your employees with endless platitudes. Words of appreciation have to be sincere and specific. Telling someone they are doing a great job can sound patronising and trite. They will probably assume you actually know very little about what it is they actually do. A compliment has to be relevant and precise. You should offer praise for a task performed well, and explain what it is that you have been impressed by. The praise then becomes constructive, making it more likely they’ll repeat the great performance. 3. Learning and progression. It isn’t always possible to have a clear path for promotion but we all need to know that we are improving and growing. There should always be the opportunity to learn, whether it be on-the job or through training and gaining qualifications. A dead-end job may quickly become the end of the job, as the ambitious member of staff finds another challenge elsewhere. Find ways of providing extra responsibility, give projects, create shadowing opportunities etc – be creative! Your people should also come up with some ideas, after all its their development 4. Autonomy. One of the biggest complaints I hear about bosses is micromanagement. If you have good people – get out of their way and let
them surprise you. People are usually capabale of more than you think they are. Just make sure you are very clear about what outcomes you want, how you should be kept updated, what support or help they need from you, what they think the risks are and what their plans are should those risks materialize – then there should be no need for you to meddle! If your team member then asks for help, that’s great and make sure you coach them by asking them questions rather than telling them the answer. Otherwise they won’t learn for the next time. 5. Community - Many of us spend most of our waking hours at our place of work. If it is boring drudgery, then why would anyone want to stay. Having shared goals and working toward them is very uniting. Make sure you share your vision and get your people behind it. Creating a sense of community among the workforce is vital. It is quite rare to see team-building days now, and they do conjure up the image of David Brent strumming his guitar. But team-building is important, and social activities, even if it is just going to the pub on a Friday, can help create a vibrant atmosphere at work.

Golden Mallorca T Like all of the Balearics, Mallorca combines a peaceful rural charm with hedonistic glamour. We experienced both at Hotel Illa d’Or
he situation of Hotel Illa d´Or couldn’t be more picturesque: set 1.5 km from the centre of Puerto de Pollensa, the hotel is framed by the blue of the Mediterranean on one side and by the majestic mountains of the Tramuntana range on the other. Only 45 minutes from Palma, this is an oasis of calm.
As you walk down the front steps of the hotel, you are afforded a spectacular view – right through the stunning marble reception area, across the pine walk and down the jetty to a picture-perfect panoramic framing of the Mediterranean sea beyond. Founded in 1929, the four star Illa d‘Or is the epitome of timeless glamour and traditional values. With expansive terraces looking out

THE DETAILS
Founded in 1929, the four star Illa d’Or is the epitome of timeless glamour and traditional values onto the bay, attentive staff, two pools, expansive reception areas and a waterside restaurant, this is classic Mallorcan sophistication. A gentle stroll along the Pine walk by the side of the sea, shaded by one hundred year old pine and tamarind trees, will take you to the centre of Puerto Pollensa, where you will find plenty of restaurants and bars. 10km inland is the town of Pollensa, with its medieval centre and distinctive 365-step stairway leading up to the Calvari chapel.
The unique coastal geography of the area offers some 10 amazing beaches to enjoy nearby, some of which can only be reached on foot. However, you will have to work hard to tear yourself away from your lounger on your balcony, or on the hotel’s terrace; it is hard to imagine more beautiful or tranquil surroundings than those you are already in. Food is a strong feature here and the restaurant specialises in the inventive use of local produce with the lunch and dinner menu reflecting a simply-cooked Mediterranean theme. Eating by the water’s edge at La Terrassa, the hotel’s waterside, outdoor restaurant is perfection. This is the ultimate restaurant with a view. The spectacular position affords a panoramic view of the bay in relaxed and beautiful surroundings.
WHEN TO GO Visit Mallorca from June to September for hot days and balmy evenings by the turquoise Mediterranean. However, outside of the hottest months, Mallorca has much to offer for activity holidays, and plenty to do and see if you are interested in walking, plants or birds. If you want to do more than lie on a beach, take advantage of the low rates in winter and go early in the year to see the
Almond blossom and enjoy a walking holiday - temperatures will still be pleasantly sunny. Visit in Spring when the Cherry blossom is out, or in Autumn for the grape and olive harvests. Although many resorts close down in the winter months, Majjorca’s capital – and the capital city of all of the Balearics - Palma - is perfect for a weekend break all year round.

BUSINESS Lunch
HOTEL DU VIN City Editor Maarten Hoffmann samples the delights of an al fresco lunch at Brighton’s Hotel du Vin
I
really like the Hotel du Vin building – it has a slight gothic look to it and on the very rare day in this country that one is actually able to use their very pretty courtyard, it is a perfect location for lunch. The day we were invited to sample their menu, the sun was boiling in an azure blue sky and all was right with the world. Joined by Fiona, the extremely able Portfolio Production Editor and MD and Portfolio founder, Lynne Edwards, we eagerly sat down in the sunshine and perused the substantial menu whilst trying to pretend we were having an important meeting. The first thing to note is the impeccable service – not overbearing and annoying but there when you need them without the need to ask you every ten seconds if everything is OK. Smiling, professional and polite – not much more one can expect from your waiting staff. The first thing l had to try were the Nibbles as l was famished and one look at the Pancetta wrapped Grissini and Dijon dip, Cheese straws with Pesto dip and Anchovy twists with Tomato fondue ((£4.95 for the selection), l was hooked. A great start to fire up the taste buds and l am still wondering how on earth they managed to wrap the Pancetta around the Grissini? To start, we ordered Watermelon, Feta & Red Onion Salad (£7.00), which came in artistically arranged cubes on which we were slightly tempted to pay noughts and crosses, Crab Toasts with sliced radishes and black pepper mayonnaise (£7.50) and l could not resist my favourite, French Onion soup (£5.95). Now, this is a bold choice in England as it is rarely done well and if you have eaten as much of it as l have in

France, you become quite a snob. It was very good indeed with the perfect onion tang and superb floating sliced baguette with exactly the right cheese on-board. I could have eaten that all day but then it would not make much of a review now would it? My dining partners were delighted with their choices although Lynne did mention that the Crab Toasts, although excellent, were just a tad too large for a starter but the Black Pepper Mayo was a wonderful addition. To follow, we ordered the Goats Cheese, Spinach & Sun Blushed Tomato Roulade (£14.00), Poached Scottish Salmon with Hot Buttered Heritage Potatoes, Watercress and Hollandaise Sauce (£14.95) and the Beef Bourguignon on the Bone with Portobello Mushrooms, Shallots and Smoked Pancetta (£19.50). The Roulade was a triumph with the look of an old fashioned Swiss Roll and the taste of Heaven, the Salmon just flaked apart as soon as you looked at it and the Bourguignon was literally falling of the bone and afloat in a jus to die for with flavour packed pancetta. My trouble was that l had eyes bigger then my stomach and the Bourguignon with Pommes Puree and Petits Pois a’ la Francaise (mash and peas to you) was just too much for lunch and l had trouble getting through even half of it which was infuriating as it was fabulous. Again, the superb staff appeared from nowhere
at just the right time and whisked it away without interrupting our conversation for a moment. It is difficult to overstate the importance of good service. Not just the ability to serve well and have knowledge of the menu but to appear invisible when needed and there for questions when not. To step in at the right time to remove debris without disrupting the flow of the diners conversation – definitely an art and one that has been perfected here. Thoughts turned to pudding and we were stuffed but duty calls and we ordered Scottish Strawberries with Crème Chantilly (£6.95) and baked Vanilla Cheesecake with Blueberry compote (£6.95). Desperate to find something to criticize, l scoffed at Scottish Strawberries but then ate them – yum and yes, Scotland do have good Strawberries and the Blueberry compote was a delight with a very light Cheesecake. The Hotel also offers a sumptuous Sunday brunch, a shortened lunch menu, a grill producing 28 day aged beef and a wine cellar that is the envy of many a Sommelier. In all, the Hotel Du Vin has an excellent venue in an excellent location with excellent service and excellent food and excuse me whilst l review my thesaurus to expand my vocabulary beyond the word excellent.

BUSINESS Vote
THE BUSINESS VOTE WELCOME TO OUR NEW POLITICS FEATURE. EACH MONTH WE WILL BE ASKING LOCAL CANDIDATES FROM ALL PARTIES AND ALL REGIONS ONE VITAL QUESTION: IF YOU ARE ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR BUSINESSES IN SUSSEX?
I
have lived and worked in Crawley my entire life, running various small businesses over the last 25 years, and as a councillor and parliamentary candidate I have spent considerable time talking with local businesses about the issues they face and the changes we now need to move things forward. Labour regained control of Crawley Borough Council in May aand, as a member of the Cabinet, I am already working towards improving the local business conditions. Many companies struggle with red tape surrounding issues such as planning and apprenticeships and we are working to both streamline services and improve the support available in these areas to get things moving. In addition, we are running a campaign to encourage people to ‘Buy Local’ and adopting it as a principle of our procurement process, helping to keep money in the local economy. If elected I will continue to work to improve local business conditions alongside
councils and help provide national support for their efforts. Crawley’s economy is changing. Increasing automation over coming years is going to result in a drastic reduction of unskilled and low skilled jobs and yet over the last ten years the intermediary skills base has declined. This isn’t good for residents and it makes for a difficult labour market for local businesses. Many organisations have a role to play in dealing with the skills gap and various strategies do exist but up until now there has been a drastic lack of co-ordination between actors. As MP I would work to bring the many groups together and help focus attention on the changes we now need. It seems obvious that if you want a strong economy, one which is good for business, you need to listen to what the private sector has to say. As a parliamentary candidate I have helped to provide local businesses with the opportunities they need to inform future decision-makers, from Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls MP and Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP, to Shadow Transport Secretary Mary Creagh MP. If elected I will continue to work to provide local businesses with a national voice. If elected I will continue to work to improve local business conditions alongside councils and help provide national support for their efforts. The regional shortage in housing is bad for residents and, much as with the skills gap, bad for businesses. Housing shortages restrict the movement of skilled labour, impact upon wage demands and add to the demands on local transport infrastructure. Housing is a huge issue for Labour locally and
nationally and as an MP I would continue to lobby for the national changes we now need to ensure that we can meet local demand. I can also say that if I am elected under a new Labour government, local businesses would benefit from rates being frozen for 1.5 million businesses, Corporation Tax would be maintained as the lowest in the G7, over £30 billion would be taken out of Whitehall and handed over to LEPs to invest in local economies, and a quarter of all government contracts would go to small businesses. I
am the strongest supporter of Brighton’s SMEs and the vital role each and every one of them plays in restoring prosperity, economic security, pride and a sense of sheer commercial drive to both the city and to Sussex every day. However, given that Brighton’s business community has had to endure the entirely ideologically-driven, but administratively naive Green experiment of the last few years, - a failed political experiment often sustained by Labour’s direct or tacit support on the City Council - Brighton is still far from fulfilling its fantastic potential once again as the South East’s preeminent economic driving force outside London. From next May, therefore, Brighton’s businesses will have the chance, once more, to operate in an entirely supportive Conservative-controlled political environment, both locally and in Parliament, one that will value, empower and back wholeheartedly the restoration of Sussex enterprise once again; one that will actively assist job creation in Brighton; one that will proactively and assertively enable the region’s business leaders to deliver the investment and growth that will establish Sussex once more as the beating heart of the South East’s burgeoning economic recovery. To that end, I am already working closely with Brighton’s small businesses and independent retailers, via my own Brighton Pavilion Business Forum, to ensure I understand their key issues and concerns so that, once elected, I will be properly equipped with the personal insights into
their daily pressures and priorities, that will enable me to begin immediately helping them deliver the prosperity locally that the Conservative’s successful handling of the economy is now delivering nationally. So what are my local priorities for business should I succeed in my campaign to become Pavilion’s next MP? The Conservatives are on the side of small business and we will help them in Brighton by: • Cutting the jobs tax - saving businesses up to £2,000 in national insurance, enabling them to provide more jobs for the city’s hardworking people • Scrapping the jobs tax altogether for under 21s - so it’s easier for Brighton’s businesses to give young people a start in life • Offering a £1000 discount on business rates for local shops, pubs and restaurants •Supporting the provision of more city apprenticeships, both vocational and at graduate level • Investing in better infrastructure, including roads, rail and broadband - so it’s easier to reach customers. • Working with Network Rail to introduce greater capacity on the BrightonLondon main line, including my supporting the establishment of BML2, a second mainline to London heading north-east out of Brighton. • Getting rid of unnecessary red tape - freeing up Brighton businesses to concentrate on expansion – not least ending the hugely bureaucratic delays in the city’s planning application processes. • Supporting the construction sector to enable more affordable homes to be built in Brighton for the city’s young professionals and families. • Cutting corporation tax - helping Sussex companies to invest and grow • Ending Brighton’s “rip off” parking charges and making it easier for city centre businesses to make deliveries. Nationally, too, the Conservatives are continuing to deliver the wider economic recovery that is so fundamental to Britain’s future well-being. We are cutting income tax and freezing fuel duty, helping people and businesses to become more financially secure By being fiscally responsible, and taking tough decisions, we are reducing the deficit to secure a stronger economy and a
better future for Britain. By backing small businesses and enterprise, we have already helped create 1.8 million new jobs - that’s more people taking home a pay packet each month and being able to provide for their families. Our plan to reduce Labour’s deficit and to support businesses back onto their feet is working. Only the Conservatives have a credible plan to help small businesses and enterprise and create jobs. Nothing less than the future economic well-being of Brighton and Sussex depends on it. Over the next few months we will be asking people for more time to finish the job we have begun in Government. Businesses in Brighton – and across Sussex – can rely on the Conservatives to empower them to achieve greater and greater success should we be given that chance next May. THE BUSINESS
NETWORK
EMMA PEARCE’S GUIDE TO ‘MEMORABLE MINUTE PRESENTATIONS’ AT NETWORKING EVENTS FOUR: INCLUDE A CALL TO ACTION SUCH AS: • Requesting an introduction to a particular company (this is very successful for many people) • Details of an offer and how to take it up • How/where to buy/view a new product • Asking people to note down a date and give details of how to book onto your event • Connecting on LinkedIn or Liking your Facebook page
HOW TO MAKE YOUR 1 MINUTE COUNT What makes you look up and really listen to someone doing their one-minute round at a networking event? Be honest… are you someone that bores people or do you educate, amuse or inspire your audience into taking action? Don’t fall into the trap of being on auto-repeat at every networking event. You should always plan the content of your minute and change it every time – particularly for groups that you attend very regularly. Here are some tips on how to create great one minute presentations. ONE: BE MEMORABLE AND GRAB ATTENTION • Try asking a question to get attention and engage with people • Try an unusual start and description of what you do… here are a couple of examples I have seen quoted before: “I’m a time lord. I help people get more from their working day” and “I help people get dressed. I’m an image consultant.” • Always succinctly describe what you offer – make it benefit-led • Always say your name and company name at the start or immediately a er your ‘unusual start’
TWO: FOCUS YOUR MESSAGE Don’t cover too many different things in each minute. Vary what you say each time by: • Using a prop that links to what you offer • Quoting a testimonial and who gave it to you • Providing a great or shocking statistic • Relaying a funny and relevant story • Giving real examples of how you solved a problem, got a great result or averted a disaster for a client in the last week/month • Being topical (by mentioning a news story) and linking this back to your offering • Give advice on how to solve a common issue or provide the answer to a question you are o en asked • Give tips on how to do something THREE: YOU AND YOUR NOT ME, ME, ME Remember to talk to your audience using ‘you’ and ‘your’ language. That’s phrases such as ‘Are you looking for…’ or ‘Is your business suffering with….’ Don’t waste your minute saying things like ‘We have been established since 1981 and have 5 warehouses in Sussex. Our lead time for producing widgets is 14 days….’ Yawn. So what? This tip applies to all the copy on your website and literature too!
FIVE: DELIVER IT WELL You may be nervous and hate presenting, but networking works for many businesses. Practise, Practise, Practise. It will get better! Look up, smile, look around, and make eye contact. Speak clearly and loud enough to be heard. Don’t speak too fast. Have your script on cards or paper if you need it. Look presentable and feel comfortable. Finish with your name, company name and catchphrase or strapline if you have one.

VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE cabriolet 50s
RETRO CHIC
Motoring review by Maarten Hoffmann, City Motoring Editor
The Beetle Cabriolet 50s: a successful update of a classic into a stylish turbocharged convertible? Maarten Hoffmann finds out.
T
he Beetle Cabriolet 50s: a successful update of a classic into a stylish turbo-charged convertible? What a cracking challenge. I endlessly drone on about why a manufacturer doesn’t bring back an updated version of some of the classics? People forever moan about why the cars of today are not as good/cool/stylish as the cars of yesteryear. Why not an E-Type body plonked onto a current Jaguar XK frame or a Bentley blower onto a Mulsanne frame? They own the company therefore surely
they own the templates to the old shapes? Well it looks like someone was listening. I wasn’t alive at the time of the 1950s cool California surfer dude period but with movies and endless great music from the period, l know what the scene was all about and the Beetle was a staple of that period, due to its low price and the fact that you could customise it to the point that it was unrecognisable. And yet, this is only the third ever production Beetle convertible since 1949. Volkswagen has had a go at recreating this stylish Beetle and it is the best fun you can have
with your trousers on. My test car was black with a red leather interior and for a moment, l dreaded spending a week with it and receiving the endless sarcastic insults from friends who spotted me driving it around Brighton. No worries – it is great fun to drive and l couldn’t give a monkey’s who saw me in it as it was cool, funky and fast. Fast enough to make me get the spec sheet out and double check what was under the bonnet as it was surely at least a 2 litre. But no. It’s powered by a 1.4 litre engine which makes no sense until l spotted the old fashioned turbo

boost gauge on the dash. You remember the one – the turbo boost that did nothing until you hit a certain speed and then without warning, cut in and shot you through the window of Woolworths (yes, it did happen to me many moons ago in a 911 Turbo) This one is a tad more civilised and has a gradual boost seepage but ye gods, how on earth do they get a 1.4 to go that quick? I don’t know nor do l care to be frank as it just does, and it is such a laugh that l dreamt up places to go. It will even wheel spin away from the lights which cars with sensitive traction control just don’t do anymore. It’s not only harks back to the old days in style but also in performance and driving style. And it is so easy to drive – get in switch on and go – any fool could drive this car within a second of getting in it. Its road manners are also superb as it sticks to the tarmac like an insect possessed but can get a tad choppy on inferior roads, and it reminds me of the classic old Porsche 356 that James Dean topped himself in. And just for good measure, they give you a huge turbo boost gauge and a digital stopwatch so that you can time your runs – i’m sure no one would ever use it but fun anyway. And that’s the key to this car – fun! When was the last time l said that about a sub £50,000 car? I am so tired of bland euro boxes that turn up on my driveway that to actually get hold of something that makes me smile
and goes like a bat out of hell, is such a relief that l nearly bought a round! The roof is electric but doesn’t totally disappear and just sits there looking like a Silver Cross pram but it drops in 9 seconds and is very well insulated when up. I also quite like the little nods to the original with net pockets in the doors, a glove compartment that opens upwards and retro echoes in the big shiny hub caps. I guess it’s fair to say that previous Beetles have been targeted at women and with the plethora of daisy’s sticking out of dashboard pots, they succeeded, but these new retro models are aimed at the boys although l doubt they will be a big hit with your average scaffolder! The three models are 50s, 60s & 70s and they make a fair fist of it but the 50’s version is the only one that really stands out. It’s not the cheapest thing in its class but at £24,895.00 it’s a lot of car for the money and it’s actually got some character. And you will be in good company. Ever since a chap called Mr Hitler had the canny idea to make a peoples car, they have produced over 21 million of them between 1938 and 2003, when they stopped churning them out in Mexico. In all, a great fun car that goes like stink, looks cool and will never date. And now to the most important little titbit – it is the first car this year that l have tested that does not have a bloody annoying stop/start system. Job done – buy it!

SCHOOL insight
EDUCATION OPEN YOUR EYES AT OPEN DAYS Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent. Open Days can help, if you know what to look for...
T
he holidays are over and it is back to school for a new year, and time to think about education choices for next September. The schools know that decisions will be made over the next few months, so they are keen to show off their school in the very best light. In other words, it is the season of the school Open Day. Open Days are a wonderful opportunity to explore potential schools and meet the headmaster, teachers and pupils. But how accurate a picture can you get from an organised tour? Inevitably, the event will be set up to make each school look as attractive as possible, but you can still get a good feel for a school. So how can you make the most of an Open Day? Here are our tips: • Always remember that the school is set up to sell a vision to potential parents. So how well have they done? Have they impressed you? A er all, if they can’t organise a successful Open Day, do you want them to organise your child’s education • Take your child with you. Don’t forget it is him/ her that will be going to the school every day. Ask their opinion? Has the school inspired them? They will pick up on things you may not notice. • Speak to the pupils. How do they fell about the school. Are they happy? Do they look confident and assured? Are they behaving impeccably? Are they good role models for your child?
• Ask about clubs and activities. Are they wideranging and inclusive? If cost is an issue, are they expensive? • Read the noticeboards. Is there plenty going on? Most importantly, try to get a feel for what goes on in the school when it isn’t an Open Day.

• Talk to teachers. Do they seem enthusiastic about the school? Do you think they can develop and nurture your child’s curiosity and eagerness to learn? In other words, would you like them to teach your child?

• Look round the classrooms. Are they stimulating environments? Do you think you child would thrive here?

• Look at the pupils’ work on display. Don’t just concentrate on the quality, look at how many pupils have work shown. Are they are just showcasing the work of a few talented pupils?

• Listen to the headteacher. If they give a welcoming speech, do they have a vision and passion. This is the person who leads and shapes the school. His /her job is to motivate and inspire. Did you feel inspired? • Remember the purpose of your visit is to get a feel for the school. If you like what you see, then do more research. Ask if you can come in when it is a normal schoolday. No-one should refuse this request. • Ask questions. If there is anything you want to know, this is your opportunity.

With 360 degree views of the sea and the downs, Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College Principal Chris Thomson was on top of the world when he received an engraved commemorative slab on the roof of the new £4.2 million, modern 3 storey teaching block on the former car park adjacent to Dyke Road. Members of Fareham based Amiri Construction and Chichester’s HNW Architects presented the roof slab to follow the long-time honoured tradition of a “topping out” a new building. The new block will provide state of the art class rooms, a student social study area and dining facilities and will be a much welcomed addition to the 2300 students who will attend the college next year. Chris Thomson said: “The building that will significantly improve amenities for both students and staff at BHASVIC and will contribute to boosting the quality of learning and teaching at the College which is already acknowledged to be outstanding by Ofsted. We are absolutely delighted both by the quality of the building and by the tremendous consideration shown by Amiri staff throughout the project, working as they have been in the very heart of the College”Grahame Pettit, Managing Director at Amiri Construction, said that they are following their specific considerate construction policy they apply to sites at educational establishments to minimise potential disruption and maximise safety: “We will also encourage students to view and take tours of the building as it forms as many may wish to consider one of the diverse careers within the construction industry.” www.bhasvic.ac.uk PORTFOLIO 87

WE LOVE JAMIE OLIVER AND A NEW JAMIE OLIVER COOKBOOK IS A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE THEME IS COMFORT FOOD. JUST RIGHT FOR AUTUMN EVENINGS.

CELEBRITY interview
T
elevision cookery is a busy arena and some might say there are too many cooks in the kitchen these days. But although others may have come and gone over the decades, Jamie Oliver, at just 37 years of age, remains one of our most enduring and popular food gurus. For many fans, it’s his bright, enthusiastic and accessible style that made Jamie such a breath of fresh air when he first appeared on our televisions 16 years ago. The son of an Essex publican was working as a sous chef in London’s River Cafe when he was spotted by a documentary crew and given his own BBC show, The Naked Chef. Suddenly, the approach of then-established TV cooks such as Delia Smith seemed staid and oldfashioned; here was a young buck who was bursting with infectious passion and who soon brought the world ‘pukka’ into common Western parlance. “All I ever wanted to do was to make food accessible to everyone; to show that you can make mistakes - I do all the time - but it doesn’t matter.” Within a year he had been invited to cook for the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, at No 10 Downing Street and in 2000 he became the face of Sainsbury’s, a relationship which lasted 11 years, despite Jamie’s occasional criticism of supermarket standards. In 2002 he demonstrated his philanthropic side by
launching Fifteen, an apprenticeship venture in which every year 15 disadvantaged youths are trained to run a top quality restaurant. The scheme has eateries in London, Cornwall, Amsterdam and Australia; a high proportion of trainees have left their troubled pasts behind to forge careers in food. “I think there are definitely two types of student: the academic kids and the 50% who
fail. It’s very clear to see - it’s fact. We’re not doing enough for those who fail; they need a more physical, tactile approach, involving people skills, team building, problem solving, building things.” His efforts to improve other people’s lives have not always been met with praise, however. When Jamie launched an assault on poor school dinners in 2005, his televised push for better nutrition led to an official campaign called Feed Me Better and as a result, the government reduced the availability of fried food and soft drinks in schools. But although these changes were
lauded by many, Jamie’s actions were criticised by some parents who insisted that their children would refuse to eat the healthier meals now being offered at school; at one South Yorkshire school, parents famously delivered fish and chips to their children through the playground gates, saying the pupils were unable to eat anything from the canteen. Attempts to improve school dinners across the Atlantic were received with even more hostility. When filming in America in 2010, he was met with a barrage of abuse and numerous obstacles; even education officials appeared to be against him when he was banned from filming in Los Angeles schools and one scene showed him in tears as he struggled to make headway with the locals. “Change is very hard – structures, organisations, businesses, people, anyone really. And if you’re shining a light on one of the most unhealthy places in the world, it has to be a car crash, there’s no pretty way.” Jamie soon bounced back from this disappointment, though and has made eight more TV series and specials since then, many of which focus on bringing better quality food into our daily lives; most notably, his 30-Minute and 15-Minute Meals series have offered ways for time-poor families to eat well despite their limitations. Education in all its forms seems to be important to the entrepreneur, as in the 2011 Channel 4 series, Dream School, he

attempted to inspire underachieving teenagers by drafting in celebrities to teach their specialist subjects, with mixed results. “Like most of the other teachers, I’d done a bit of teaching and we all think we’re great at what we do, but you realize that normally you have an audience who are all onside, who all want to listen.” Determined to keep pushing for change, Jamie launched a global event designed to raise awareness of food education by inspiring people to hold community activities, arrange tours of their local food producers, spend a day passing on recipes to friends and neighbours – anything that highlighted and shared the importance of eating well and keeping food skills alive. Last year, 1,000 events took place in more than 660 cities across the world and Jamie is encouraging even more people to get involved this year. “For me, it’s about empowering people through education or, frankly, just inspiring people to be more streetwise about food, where it comes from and how it affects their bodies. If you know how to cook you can save yourself money, feel better and live longer and, the chances are, your kids will follow suit.”
Jamie’s new cookbook brings together 100 ultimate comfort food recipes. It’s all about the dishes that are close to your heart, that put a smile on your face and make you feel happy, loved, safe and secure. Inspired by everything from childhood memories to the changing of the seasons, and taking into account the guilty pleasures and sweet indulgences that everyone enjoys. The book features ultimate versions of all-time favourites, and also introduces cherished dishes from countries around the world, providing a delicious recipe for every occasion. This isn’t everyday cooking - this is about weekends, holidays, celebrations and occasions. Written in Jamie’s usual down-to-earth and easy-to-understand style, the methods are precise and have been tested to the hilt, so are guaranteed to work, but this time Jamie has turned the edit filter off, and shares extra hints, tips and ideas throughout to ensure you achieve the best possible results. This is about making food the very best it can be, and embracing the rituals of cooking. Recipes include everything from mighty moussaka, delicate gyoza with crispy wings, steaming ramen and katsu curry to super eggs Benedict, scrumptious sticky toffee pudding and tutti frutti pear tarte tatin. Jamie’s Comfort Food is published on 28 Aug 2014 by Michael Joseph
