A Letter From The Director Dear Parents and Friends, Thank you for joining us for our 35th End of the Season Spectacular! At Dance World Academy, we truly feel that our show is a celebration of the talent and hard work of our wonderful students. It is always a wonderful thing to watch children from age 3 through age 18 participating in dance, an activity that ignites passion while providing healthy physical activity. At Dance World Academy, students of every ability are encouraged to work their hardest together with the other members of their class to make their dance a success. Our students feel the rewards of accomplishment as they develop confidence by performing in front of a large audience in our extremely professional stage show. Children who dance at Dance World Academy are happy, focused, committed, proud, inspired, passionate, healthy, and smart! We as dance teachers believe we are not just teaching steps. Dance is a powerful art form that can heal our soul when we are hurting. It can help us forget when we are overwhelmed. It can inspire us to keep on going. It encourages us to work hard to achieve a goal so that we learn to follow through with our commitments. Only a small percentage of young dancers will move on to a professional career, but the lessons learned in dance are lifelong lessons as students discover the results of their hard work and determination when their dances come together to delight you…..the audience members and parents! Regardless of ability, age, shape or size, everyone can share a passion for dance! Nothing can move an audience like good dance and nothing can move us quite like dancing! Each student in the show has worked hard and memorized their dance routines so they can share their joy with you. Dance makes us feel good! Doing our best makes us feel good! Put it all together and you get an enjoyable uplifting show that we know you will enjoy. We encourage our students to work hard to make their performance a success, whether they dance once a week or every day. Each child feels an extremely important part of our show! By polishing their dances before they step onto the stage, our students feel more confident and enjoy the self satisfaction that comes from a job well done. Hard work makes our students not only better dancers but also better people, who are not afraid of challenges and have high self esteem. Dancing may look easy, but On Our COver: “TOO Darn HOT” 2013 Dance World academy – Dance Company BAck ROW (L to R): Rachel cohen, Emily Valdes, Evelyn Morrison, Leslie Mariano, Malcolm Young, Daniel Padierna, Amanda Majer, Amanda Nowakowski, Damani Van Rensalier, Nicole Greene MiDDLE ROW (L to R): Alyssa Schoener, cara Valencia, Ariella cohen, Samantha Mckoy, Stephanie carleo, Diana Julcapoma, Jasmine corazon, Nicole conillas FRONt ROW (L to R): Amy Domenack, Syera Plitt, Jennifer Esserry, Alexandra Lisanti, Angelina De Leon, Sasha Zaldana
believe me, it’s not. Memorizing the routine, executing correct dance technique, performing in time to the music, staying on the correct foot, keeping in the right formation while smiling can be truly challenging. Our students deserve a huge round of applause! Each year, we strive to make a fun, beautiful and tasteful show that our students are proud to be in and that you, our audience can truly enjoy. Our show is produced with professional lighting and sound, creative costuming, and scenery. We strive to make our dances age appropriate in both content and ability level. We teach correct dance technique and incorporate the most up to date dance styles. Whether a student is dancing for fun, fame or a little of both, our dance programs provide wonderful educational benefits. Our program allows for self expression, an emotional outlet and exercise that educational researchers say can perk up a child’s mental processes making them better students in school. Our program teaches focus and discipline. Researchers have discovered that true self esteem is built through genuine accomplishments and praise that is truly earned! Our students have definitely earned your praise today!! They are also making memories that will last a lifetime. THANK YOU PARENTS for being here with us today and for believing in Dance World Academy and the standard of excellence it represents. We know that you have sacrificed a lot to give your children a fine dance education. We appreciate your support of our program and the policies necessary to maintain our high standards. Your children are lucky and blessed to have such encouraging and supportive parents! THANK YOU STUDENTS for your outstanding hard work and dedication. Thank you for understanding that when people care about you - they want the best from you. Thank you for giving us that. Our faculty is very proud of you and values the opportunity to be part of your life. THANK YOU TO MY STAFF AND FACULTY for your true belief in excellence and your dedication in time and effort to achieve it! I am very fortunate to have you all in my life. You are truly amazing people who inspire me daily with your spirit, enthusiasm and encouraging words! THANK YOU AUDIENCE for sharing this wonderful performance with us. It is hearing your applause that makes performing on stage such a unique and delightful experience. Thank you to my incredible loving family, my wonderful husband who is ALWAYS there when I need him, my beautiful Dana who makes me smile every day, and my Sholpan who taught me to believe in miracles until you make them happen. Enjoy the show!! Donna Farinella Owner & Director Dance World Academy
Donna Farinella Owner-Director of Dance World Academy ENTHUSIASM - ENERGY - CREATIVITY MOTIVATION can certainly be used to describe Donna Farinella’s unique approach to dance teaching. She holds a B.A degree in dance from Douglass College of Rutgers University. She is one of the most accomplished dance educators in America and an exceptional spokesperson. A cover story on Ms. Farinella appeared in the August 2006 issue of Dancer Magazine, a nationally published and widely respected dance magazine. An interview with Ms. Farinella also appeared in the American Diary portion of the Royal Academy of Dance Gazette, a world wide publication detailing the activities of the Royal Academy of Dance Programs. Ms. Farinella has been teaching dance since the age of thirteen when after each of her own dance classes she would run home, gather up the neighborhood children and conduct lessons in her backyard. As a teacher, choreographer, and director, she strives for excellence in everything she does. She employs teachers of only the highest caliber and dedication who share her vision of excellence in the classroom. Under her direction, she and her staff spend hours and hours in the dance studio motivating and encouraging students to be “the very best they can be and not settling for less.” This has earned Dance World Academy students a national reputation for dancing with nearly flawless precision, exciting energy, outstanding technique and radiant enthusiastic faces. Her students have received thousands of awards in the most prestigious competitions in our country today. In 2006, she took 13 award winning Dance Company members to St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia for a ten day Performance and Study tour to promote cultural exchange and friendship. In September of 2008, Dance World Academy represented the United States at an International Cultural Festival in Shanghai, China. During Thanksgiving of 2009, the Dance Company traveled to Berlin, Germany to represent the United States in a dance festival celebrating the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. And this past November, the Dance World Academy Dance Company performed in Walt Disney World Florida as part of the televised Walt Disney World Christmas Parade on ABC-TV.
Myrtle Beach, at Radio City Music Hall, in theme parks which include Opryland, Hershey Park, Busch Gardens, Disneyland and Disney World, Tokyo Disney, at the Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey and countless other regional theaters, on cruise ships, in National Touring Companies and on Broadway in “Newsies”, “Wicked,” “42nd St,” “Fosse,” “Contact,” “Footloose,” “Annie,” “Les Miserables,” “Sweet Charity,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Cats,” “The King and I,” “How To Succeed In Business,” “Chicago,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “Promises Promises”, “South Pacific” and “Aida.” Dance World Academy alumnae, Christopher Gatelli, has choreographed numerous Broadway and offBroadway shows including “South Pacific,” “Thirteen,” “Batboy: The Musical,” “Altar Boyz” and “tick, tick … BOOM!” and “Newsies” for which he won a Tony Award for Best Choreography. Miss Farinella’s students can be seen in entertainment and artistic venues all over the world. Many are currently working with companies like Alvin Ailey and have formed their own contemporary companies. They also have been accepted into the most respected college dance programs in the United States, including New York University, many on full and partial scholarships because of their excellent dance training. Aside from directing and encouraging her caring teaching staff, Ms. Farinella continues to teach and choreograph at Dance World Academy full time. Her innate creativity has led to the birth of the clever gimmicks, themes, costumes and production numbers that you will see in this performance. Ms. Farinella’s philosophy is that “When you strive for excellence, you can be proud of your accomplishments. You can’t fool kids. Kids know when someone really cares about what they’re doing. She is extremely proud that Dance World Academy was named one of the best dance studios in the country by Dancer National Magazine and that she was named “Dance Teacher of the Year” in 2003 by the Dance Educators of America at their National banquet in New York City. Dance World Academy was also named one of the 50 dance studios to watch by Dance Spirit Magazine.
Ms. Farinella has taught, judged and lectured at workshops and dance competitions throughout the United States, most notably for Dance Educators and Dance Masters of America, the two top dance teacher organizations in the United States. What I Learned from Dance World Academy… Besides Dancing!! B Y O U R 2 0 1 3 G R A D U AT I N G S E N I O R S JANAE BAILEY: Dance World Academy taught me, “When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor; it’s to enjoy each step along the way.” – Wayne Dyer I have enjoyed every aspect of dance from my first day of dance at the age of 6. Confidence, motivation and friendship are just a few of the adjectives that describe my experience at Dance World Academy. Dancing gave me the confidence to step out of faith; the courage to stand in front of people and express myself and the passion to study something that I really loved to do. The teachers were wonderful and patient. They made dancing fun and rewarding. Every recital left me longing for more. I have really enjoyed dancing at Dance World Academy and will miss it very much.
ALIA LOPEz: I’ve been a part of Dance World Academy since I was 3 years old. In the past 15 years I have learned so much more than just dance. Dance World Academy helped shape who I am today. Dancing gave me self-confidence and made me realize that I am capable of so much. It also helped me accept constructive criticism and work with other people. I have made so many great friends along the way and my time spent at Dance World Academy will never be forgotten. LESLIE MARIANO: “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” – Martha Graham Dance World Academy has taught me so much in the past 14 years. I’ve learned to always work hard and never give up. Dance World Academy has been my second home, and also a family that I will never forget.
NICOLE CONILLAS: On the wooden floors at the studio, not only did I learn to appreciate my perspiration produced by hard work, but I also learned to love my abilities and to tell stories through movements.
ALISON MCCABE: “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” – Friedrich Nietzsche Dancing at Dance World Academy has taught me to strive to achieve my best in all aspects of my life. It has helped me to grow in confidence and maturity, which are traits which I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Dance World Academy has also taught me the value of responsibility, and the importance of time management. More importantly though, Dance World Academy taught me that dancing is more than just movement; it’s a way to express oneself in a way that words could not. Dancing shaped me as a person and I could never imagine a world in which I do not dance.
MELISSA DEVERS: “To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak.” I began dancing at Dance World Academy when I was ten years old. For as long as I can remember, the staff did not just teach me how to dance, but also how to be confident, determined, dedicated and most importantly – responsible. Dance World Academy has taught me to never give up on myself, especially on something that makes me truly happy. Dance World Academy has given me life long friends and skills that will carry me through the rest of my life. I want to thank all the staff at Dance World Academy. This dance school is not just a regular dance school, it is one big family that will forever be in my heart.
BRITTANY MCGRIFF: First, I want to thank God for the talents he has given me and the opportunity to express myself through dance. My 12 years at Dance World Academy has taught me how to dance and has given me the confidence to be myself and to overcome any challenge that I may encounter. Dance has made me a better person and taught me life lessons. Being a student at Dance World Academy, I have learned the true meaning of teamwork, self-motivation and hard work. I have met some amazing dancers here. Special thanks to Miss
DIANA JULCAPOMA: “As soon as you become afraid to make a fool of yourself, you’re in trouble. i decided i may as well just see if i can live with myself making millions of mistakes and learn something from it.” – Gelsey Kirkland At Dance World Academy, I learned that dedication, determination, and hard work are what makes a dancer. I’ve gained confidence, common sense, and friends that I will never forget.
6
Donna and my teachers for encouraging me and teaching me how to dance beyond my limits. This chapter of my life will not be forgotten. I will truly miss everyone.
JAMAIYA REESE: What I’ve learned throughout my years at Dance World Academy is to appreciate all styles of dance. One of my favorite quotes is, “the journey between who you once were and who you are now becoming is where the dance of life really takes place.” I have been touched and inspired by the teachers and students at Dance World Academy. The years that I have been have flown by. That is a sign of a great dance program and exceptional teachers and staff.
JANKARY MORALES: At Dance World Academy I learned right away that giving up was never the answer. Dance was not only about moving your feet and body, but also about passion – which grew within me. Dance World Academy has taught me the meaning of dedication, determination and leadership. Throughout the years that I’ve been dancing at Dance World Academy I learned that once you are a D.W.A. student you will always be a D.W.A. student. Thanks to Dance World Academy I have learned that having confidence is the the key to a perfect performance.
ARLEEN RUIz: Dance World Academy has taught me much more than to dance. I learned it takes hard work and team work to get the job done. Through dance I learned to express myself without words. I will take all the life lessons I have learned over the years with me into the “real world.” Dance World Academy will forever be in my heart.
EVELYN MORRISON: I have never found the feeling I get from dance in anything else. All my years dancing at Dance World Academy have taught me to be dedicated, passionate, and free from the rest of the world. “You have to love dancing to stick to it. it gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls or hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive” –Merce Cunningham
SIERA SANGSTER: When you’re driven and dedicated to do something you love, hard work definitely pays off. I have learned there are greater aspects of dance such as coordination, teamwork, energy and most importantly self-confidence. Learning here at Dance World Academy has allowed me to grow as a person and love dance even more. I have learned a lot about the art of dance from all the teachers here at Dance World Academy because not only are they phenomenal at what they do, but they know how to create stars. In addition to learning from teachers, my peers have had a positive impact on me. As a girl of few words, dance has given me the opportunity to express myself. I would love to thank all the staff at Dance World Academy and especially Miss Donna for having an incredible organization that will be forever embedded in my memory. “Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance, in the middle of fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.” – Rumi
DANIEL PADIERNA: “When you become the image of your own imagination, it’s the most powerful thing you could ever do.” – Rupaul Dance World Academy has truly taught me the meaning of determination, perseverence, and most importantly self pride. Dancing for fourteen years has given me the ability to understand that it takes charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent to achieve the greatest goals in life. The impact my Dance World Academy family has left on me will always remain perennial, as it is a constant reminder to continue loving yourself through all times of difficulty. JACqUELINE PEREz: I started dancing ten years ago at Dance World Academy, thinking that the only thing I was going to learn was dance. I was wrong. At Dance World Academy I learned more than just dance. I learned how to be more independent. I learned that I didn’t need my mom for everything. Each year as I progressed, after I got out of the combo classes I learned to change myself from one costume to the next and to do my own braid. Now that I am going off to college I’ll be taking on more responsibilities. I know I’m prepared for the responsibilities because of Dance World Academy. I also learned how to be persistent and to just keep trying if I don’t get something during my first attempt. Persistence is something that will affect my life in the long run. Thanks to Dance World Academy I am ready to take on the real world.

Our graduates would like to thank their wonderful supportive families without whom their dance experiences would have been impossible. They love their families and appreciate them for the many sacrifices they made in order to support their dancing! They appreciate them more than words could ever say!!

Meet Justin Schilling – Master of Ceremonies
Meet Our Combo 2 Workshop!!
Justin started off as a regular class clown until he auditioned and landed a part for his highschool’s production of “King & I.” Ever since then, Justin was hooked into all kind of performance arts ranging from theater to film. But the most appealing art to him was performing comedy, branching from sketches to improv, and even stand-up.
In order to give more students the opportunity and excitement of competition, selected students were invited to participate in our Combo 2 workshop program (predominately made up of six and seven year olds). The students practiced very hard on their tap routine from February through May. They participated in two competitions with outstanding results! They received platinum awards for their outstanding tap dancing and precision. Congratulations girls! Dance World Academy is proud of you!
In his career, Justin has performed stand-up, improv, and theater at a number of different venues in New York City, Philadelphia, and all over New Jersey. As of now, he is in the final writing process of his new Webisode series, “Dickinson & Stone InC.”, and is still acting and performing wherever he can to continue honing his skills. Justin has received two awards to date. First, the 2005 Central Jersey Film Festival’s “Best Comedy” for his acting/assistant directing role in a short film called “The Hooky Game” and a Six Flags Great Adventure nomination for “2010’s Spotlight Performer” for his work at the theme park. We met Justin as the Master of Ceremonies for the Ticket to Broadway Dance Competition. We are excited to welcome him as our Master of Ceremonies! Only a small percentage of young dancers will move on to professional dance careers, yet the lessons learned are lifelong blessings.

DANCE WORLD ACADEMY
Dance Company 2013 The Dance World Academy Dance Company was founded in 1979 to help students who wanted to dance more than just recreationally to work with a strongly committed group of people to achieve high technical and artistic goals. Just as students join a sports team, our Dance World Academy Dance Company provides an excellent outlet for the students whose favorite activity is dance. All students are considered through teacher recommendation. We look for students who have the talent, determination and the work ethic to achieve at a much higher level than what can be accomplished in a once a week recreational class. Students must be able to attend outside of class time rehearsals and have the parental support to pay for competitions and drive them to rehearsals. The students listed below have devoted a lot of time and energy to dance and have achieved outstanding top awards and high scores in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. This summer, the team will be traveling to Virginia Beach, Virginia to compete in National Finals! We wish them the best of luck and know that they will do a great job representing Dance World Academy. Aside from competitions, our Dance World Academy Dance Company attends field trips and conventions to broaden their horizons in dance. They are also eligible for performance trips like the ones we have taken to Disney World, Russia, China and Germany! Our Dance Company is led by our Director, Donna Farinella and our Chief Executive Dance Teacher, Debra J. Wolter. The many other fabulous D.W.A Faculty members who work with our Dance Company are Yessenia Ledesma, Marie Arellano, Natalie Ward, Josette McWilliams,J.P. Dance World Academy Performs in Walt Disney World! 33 members of the Dance World Academy Dance Company had the amazing opportunity of a lifetime as they participated in the "Dance the Magic" event at Walt Disney World on November 28th through December 2nd! The students participated in a Parade down Main Street and performed at the taping of the spectacular ABC -TV Disney's Christmas Day Parade. The students got to work with Tony Award Winning Choreographer, Christopher Gattelli, choreographer of "Newsies" which was particularly exciting since Christopher is an alumnae of Dance World Academy. Our older students performed a production routine from "Newsies" along with Broadway cast members from the show. Our younger students performed a Scottish dance routine with Princess Merida from the movie "Brave".
Dance World Academy leads the Disney Parade!
The students also had a chance to perform one of their Dance World Academy routines at Hollywood studios and participated in an educational workshop where they learned what it takes to be a Walt Disney World performer! They learned several routines presented to them by a Walt Disney World choreographer, participated in a mock audition and even danced along with "Goofy". What could be better than that?
Congratulations to all Dance Company members on an extraordinary trip!
Learning what it takes to work at Disney from the master himself – Goofy! Meeting Goofy was definitely a highlight of the trip!
