History

History Celebrating over 100 Years of Service. It survived the Depression. It survived a fire that consumed three-quarters of the company’s stock. But perhaps most surprisingly, Cyrus R. Fox Lumber has survived Home Depot – not only survived but thrived. Not many companies can claim four generations of family ownership and success in an age of big-box stores, but this century-old lumber yard and hardware supply company has kept success moving from father to son. The company, a fixture in Clinton, is nestled between the South Branch of the Raritan River and Route 78.The premises are rife with historical notes and is rumored to have received wood from the first load of lumber that came through the Panama Canal.The property once housed a Lehigh Valley Railroad station (now a window showroom) and the town’s power station. In 2005 the company celebrated its 100th year in business.The timing was right; the company also had its best year ever with $22 million in sales. Even adjusting for inflation, the volume of sales was the strongest ever for the company, according to the current owner Cyrus Apgar. Mr. Apgar is the great-grandson of Daniel Fox, who bought the 5.5 acre property in Clinton in 1905 and founded Daniel S. Fox Lumber and Coal. In the 1920’s it became Fox Brothers Lumber for Mr. Fox’s sons Rhuston and Cyrus. In 1947, Cyrus became the sole owner. In 1970, after a major fire in 1969 and the subsequent rebuilding, the business was renamed Cyrus R. Fox Inc.The business passed to two of Cyrus’ children, Cyrus Jr. and Helen, who had married

Lawrence Apgar.When Mr. Apgar returned from serving in World War II, he joined Cyrus Jr. in running the business along with Rhuston’s son Daniel Fox. In 1993, the Apgars bought Cyrus Jr. out of the business. Now the company is “an Apgar family business,” according to Mrs. Apgar, but for tradition’s sake, the company kept her father’s name. Not surprisingly, the fire was a turning point. Mrs. Apgar remembers the exact day of the fire, not merely because of the devastation, but because it happened on March 1, her wedding anniversary. Today the business, at any given time, has about three million dollars of on the ground inventory. The company, which has a hardware store, no longer sells coal, having ended that endeavor because of supply problems. Change has been a key to the business’ success, according to Cyrus Apgar, Heln’s son and current owner. Rather than a lumber company, he says they are a “building materials” business. The difference isn’t merely semantic. “Engineered wood products is a big thing now,” says Mr. Apgar. More and more home builders are shunning wood for interiors, decks or siding, in exchange for composite materials that, while looking like wood, are a mixture of plastics and wood, or cement and wood. He ascribes the change to the new materials being “maintenance free” and available in larger sizes. Also, he notes that trees being cut down now for lumber are much younger than the older-growth trees of yesteryear. “Newer (younger) wood is not as strong,” he says.

Changing with the times has helped the company to flourish; however, Mr. Apgar says the key to his company’s success has not. It is all about “quality service, quality products and good prices.” Preferring to work with local businesses, smaller-volume developers and contractors, Mr. Apgar says he is grateful to those who patronize the business, many of them second- or thirdgeneration customers. “We wouldn’t be in business this long without our customers.We don’t push anyone away.” While Cyrus Apgar has no children, he says his family does plan to keep the business passing through the generations. He owns the business with his siblings: Larry Apgar Jr., Barbara Gates and Patricia Swarts. His brother and sisters aren’t involved in the business, but he thinks one of his eight nieces and nephews will carry it on. “We don’t know who yet,” he said, “but somebody.”

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finishes are warranted against tarnishing, pitting, corrosion or discoloration for a period of ten years. Non-PVD finishes are not covered under the ten year warranty.

“Green” Your Home with Natural, Sustainable American Hardwoods Looking for an earth-friendly way to add beauty and warmth to the home? Green, sustainable American hardwood floors, cabinetry and trim add natural elegance to today’s interiors. What are American Hardwoods? Hardwoods are deciduous trees that have broad leaves, produce a fruit or nut and generally go dormant in the winter. America’s forests grow hundreds of varieties of hardwood trees that thrive in this country’s temperate climates. These varieties, or species, include oak, ash, cherry, maple and poplar. Softwoods are conifers, evergreen and cone-bearing trees. Widely available U.S. softwoods include cedar, fir, hemlock, pine, redwood and spruce. In a home, softwoods primarily are used as structural lumber such as 2x4s and 2x6s, with limited decorative applications. All the commercially available U.S. hardwoods are crafted into furniture, cabinetry, woodwork and built-ins. It’s simply a matter of taste, preference and availability. Exotic Hardwoods & Domestic Lumber Quarter Sawn White Oak The sapwood is light-colored and the heartwood is light to dark brown. White oak is mostly straight-grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak. White oak, therefore, has more figure. Working Properties: White oak machines well, nails and screws well although pre-boring is advised. Since it reacts with iron, galvanized nail are recommend. Its adhesive properties are variable, but it stains to a good finish. Can be stained with a wide range of finish tones. The wood dries slowly. Spanish Cedar Spanish Cedar is widely used as a construction timber in South America, as well as for furniture and paneling. But in North America, Spanish Cedar is really known for its very distinctive fragrance, and thus as the wood of choice for lining humidors, cigar boxes and cigar wrappers. Applications for the wood also include craft projects, high-end cabinetry and furniture, clothing chests, interior joinery, patterns, lead pencils, boat building, canoe decks and musical instrument parts. Soft Maple (Tiger) Soft Maple is a domestic hardwood. This wood resembles Hard Maple. It is close grained but it is much softer in texture. The sapwood color is creamy white and the heartwood is light reddish-brown. Common Uses: This lumber is used for flooring, furniture, interior joinery, turner, decorative veneers, musical instruments and as an alternative to Hard Maple. Yellow Heart This beautiful exotic and imported hardwood is a bright yellow color, darkening only a little on exposure to sunlight. There is a little differentiation between heartwood and sapwood. The color is very consistent across the wood. It is usually straight grained and uniform. It dries easily with limited checking and cracking. Common Uses: Flooring, furniture, knife handles, pens, scroll work, turnings, inlays and cabinetry. Padauk Padauk is an exotic and imported hardwood that comes in both a strip or a mottled effect. An eye catching wood, the color varies from a rich crimson or brick red, to reddish-purple streaks, to bright orange. It darkens over time to dark reddish-brown. The interlocked grain produces the striped figure on quartered surfaces. The texture is medium to coarse. Common Uses: Padauk is used for joinery, turnery, furniture, inlay, flooring, knife handles, veneer and tool handles. Zebrawood This exotic and imported hardwood is pale golden brown to pinkish-brown with pronounced dark brown streaks giving the quartered surfaces a zebrastripe appearance. The grain in interlocked. This wood has a coarse texture and lustrous surface. Zebrawood is heavy, hard and strong. Common Uses: Zebrawood is used for cabinet work, inlay, marquetry, flooring, joinery and turnery.

Exotic Hardwoods & Domestic Lumber African Mahogany Our African Mahogany is an exotic and imported hardwood that is figured â&#x20AC;&#x153;broken grained.â&#x20AC;? It is characterized by vertical bonds of varying luster and vessel markings in which the ribbon effect is intermittent. Common Uses: African Mahogany wood is used for furniture, joinery, paneling, boat building, cabinet making, veneer, plywood and wherever American Mahogany used. Bloodwood Although hard and tough, it works easily with hand and power tools. May need pre-drilling for nailing. Holds screws well. Glues, stains and polishes to a very good finish. Durability: Durable and very resistant to preservative treatment. Uses: Cabinetmaking, furniture, decorative inlay, marquetry work, fancy boxes, turning, veneers. Butternut The sapwood of the butternut is almost white and usually quite narrow. The heart wood is light brown, often with pinkish tones variegated with different shades of brown. It displays quite a satiny sheen. It is relatively lightweight for most domestic hardwoods, has straight coarse grain and rather weak in bending strength. Once dry, the wood is very dimensionally stable.

Lace Wood Works well with hand and macing tools, but there is moderate blunting effect on cutters and a tendency to bind in saws. Glues well, stains and polishes, with care, to an excellent finish. Uses: Furniture, cabinetmaking, joinery, light construction, paneling, ornamental inlay, decorative uses. Excellent for turning fancy goods.

Purple Heart Purple Heart is an exotic and imported hardwood that is strong and resilient, and has a uniform fine-to-medium texture. The grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. The wood is purple which darkens in time through oxidation. Common Uses: Purple Heart is fantastic for turnery, chemical vats, heavy construction, flooring, billiard cue butts, handles and cabinetry. A dye produced from the wood is used for textile fabrics.

Sassafras

Sassafras heartwood is pale brown to orange brown, resembling ash or chestnut. The narrow sapwood is yellowish white. The wood has a coarse texture and is generally straight-grained. Well-known as an aromatic species. Used for furniture, millwork and mouldings, windows, doors, door frames and kitchen cabinets.

Exotic Hardwoods & Domestic Lumber Hickory (Shagbark) Shagbark Hickory is a domestic hardwood. It is the hardest, heaviest and strongest North American wood in common every day use. No other commercial wood has the combination of strength, toughness and elasticity.The texture is very coarse, the grain is usually straight but sometimes irregular. Common Uses: Tool handles, lawn furniture, agricultural implements, athletic goods, ladder rungs and archery bows. Bubinga Moderately durable. Susceptible to attack from common furniture beetle. Heartwood is resistant to preservative treatment. Sapwood is permeable. Primarily used as a veneer for cabinetwork, furniture, and paneling. Also used for knife handles, and fancy goods. The Birdseye figure is found in heartwood and sapwood. Both can be breathtaking. The boards are from Maple logs with irregular growth. Wood with this figure is highly prized for stringed musical instruments, high end furniture, specialty veneers, cabinetry and countless other projects. Wenge Wenge is an exotic and imported hardwood that has heartwood that is dark brown with very close, fine, almost black veins. The texture is coarse and the grain is straight to slightly wavy. Common Uses: Wenge is used for flooring, interior or exterior joinery, excellent for turnery, veneer, cabinets, marquetry and carving.

Teak True Teak of Burma is an exotic and imported heartwood that is a uniform golden-brown color. Teak is generally straight to wavy grained, coarse textured and oily to the touch. The luster is dull. The wood has a distinctive smell. Teak has excellent strength properties which make the timber so suitable for structural uses. Teak has outstanding durability in regards to wet and dry conditions. It is hard, strong, heavy and very attractive. Quarter Sawn Red Oak The oaks have been key in Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s industrial transformation: railroad ties, wheels, plows, looms, barrels and, of course, furniture and floors. Main Uses: Furniture, flooring, architectural millwork and mouldings, doors, kitchen cabinets, paneling and caskets.

About Paulownia Paulownia is a soft hardwood that is native to China and has been used for over one thousand years in the fine furniture and construction industries. The heartwood is light in color and the sapwood even lighter. The color difference between the two is not distinct. The wood is without odor or taste and when sanded has the feel of spun silk. Environmentally Friendly Paulownia is predominantly plantation grown and considered a “green” product given its ten to twelve year harvesting cycles.

Wood Structure The demarcation between heartwood and sapwood is not clear and the wood is straight grained and lustrous. Wood Properties Paulownia is comparatively soft and light in weight for a hardwood. Physical weight is slightly less than kiln dried western red cedar and two-thirds the weight of eastern white pine. It has a very high strength-to-weight ratio. The shrinkage coefficient is smaller than most commercially harvested coniferous and broad leaf woods.The wood dries rapidly and does not easily warp, cup, end check, splinter or split. Movement in service is rated as small. Paulownia has one of the lowest thermal conductivity values of any wood; therefore the wood has very high insulation properties. Low thermal conductivity contributes to the low shrinkage in use. Paulownia is naturally decay and insect resistant. It has no measurable pitch, resin or tannins so it is not subject to extractive bleeding. Working Properties Paulownia is easy to work using hand or machine tools. It is easy to plane, sand, saw, rip, rout, and carve, and even during quick processing there is no danger of splitting or chipping. It easily absorbs glue, paint, and stains.

Emtek locks have heavy duty mechanisms designed to provide trouble free service. Knobs and lever handles are supported by springs mounted behind the rosettes and sideplates. These springs return the handles back to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;restâ&#x20AC;? position and prevent lever sag. Latches are heavy duty diecast construction, with strong internal springs, solid brass nose bolts and sintered metal cams. A plastic bushing located in the joint between handle and rosette ensures a friction free wear surface. The threaded tubes inside an Emtek lock are machined brass, not steel.
