Will I get carded going to taste kombucha?

Yes, both Urban Farm Kombucha and Root Wild Kombucha require ID to place an order.

An 8-oz. serving of kombucha typically contains 5–15 mg of caffeine, barely noticeable even if you’re extremely sensitive, compared to:.

coffee: 80–110 mg black tea: 45–75 mg green tea: 25–45 mg Kombucha’s alcohol content typically ranges from 1 to 2 percent ABV as the result of natural fermentation.

Mass-market kombucha is often diluted to below 0.5 percent ABV in order to be sold as a non-alcoholic beverage. You’d have to drink 10 servings at this ABV to feel even the buzz of one beer.

Through an extra round of fermentation, “hard” kombucha may contain as much alcohol as beer (around 5 percent ABV) or wine (around 12 percent ABV).

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to avoid all kombucha with any alcohol content.

MIDDAY PICK-ME-UP

Urban Farm Fermentory is a whole world of different drink experiences. The lime- green building at 200 Anderson Street is surrounded by many of the breweries Portland is famous for: Hi-Fidelity Brewing in back, Lone Pine and Good Fire across the street, and Belleflower around the corner. The background jazz is always just right. The picnic tables call to you; there’s an occasional Mr. Tuna stand in the parking lot if you’re hungry. We overhear a quip from the next table: “I never feel bad about drinking at noon when I’m here,” followed by roaring laughter.

Outstanding Oak

The Turmeric kombucha has the full earthy flavor, with spicy black pepper to activate all the root’s anti-inflammatory properties. Toasted Oak was the standout flavor. It might seem shocking that a drink flavored with wood leads the pack, but it’s stunning coupled with the vanilla playing behind the scenes.

In addition to kombucha, Urban Farm offers “cidah,” beer, gruit (beer brewed with botanicals), mead, vinegars, and jun (a sister drink to kombucha brewed with green tea and honey rather than black tea and sugar). One of the hang-ups about kombucha is the variable alcohol that comes with natural fermentation, which may stop people from being able to enjoy kombucha’s perceived benefits. Because Urban Farm does not dilute their kombucha, it has a higher alcohol content (1.5 percent) than

Root To Your Healing

Ginger root, a popular flavor across kombucha brands, is the additional digestive aid that makes drinking this fermented beverage even more attractive for those who can tolerate it. Urban Farm Fermentory and Root Wild Kombucha both have ginger flavors on their menus. Urban Farm’s is more intense, with the bite of raw ginger (not far from the pickled ginger placed in the corner of your sushi plate) in every sip. More flavor choices: Chaga Chai, Ghost Chili Pepper, Elderberry, and Cranberry.

If you’re touring Portland with your friends this summer, these kombucha spots offer a laid-back atmosphere with drinks that leave you walking home feeling renewed. n
