New: Van transportation is back! Hikers meet at the designated community center and travel to the trailhead in our 15-passenger van.

Prerequisite: Hikers must have qualified for Level 2 Hike for Health within the last year to participate. This includes those who attended any Difficult rated Metro Mover hike in the last year. Please call Lifelong Recreation at 503-823-4328 to confirm your qualification status.

Ascend up the side of the Gorge to wildflower meadows and stunning views of the Columbia River. Level 3 Qualifier.

Hike the Pacific Crest Trail south from Cascade Locks to a 74ˈ waterfall, an early source of water for the town.

(Washington Gorge)

A steady climb through white oak woodland and wildflowers to views at the top of white Salmon Valley make this a delightful hike. Be prepared for poison oak along parts of the trail. Hiking poles recommended.

Hike along raging Falls Creek and cross a 30ˈ suspension bridge on the way to a spectacular 200ˈ waterfall.

Classic Gorge wildflower hike, which also includes great views of Mt Hood and the Columbia River. For this hike we'll start at the Crawford Oaks TH and go up the Military Rd instead of circling the bluff.

Hike past Mosier Falls and through oak woodlands and wildflowers up to the plateau for spectacular views of the Columbia River Gorge. Bring money for snacks or lunch in Cascade Locks following hike.

Hike up a ridge south of Coldwater Lake. Views of the lake, Mt St Helens and twisted artifacts from the volcanic blast. Level 3 Qualifier.

Enjoy the high desert as is it meanders along the John Day River. Learn some of the history of the canyon as we pass through the self-guided interpretive center.

5/16 Wilson River (Forest Grove)

This hike offers spring wildflowers, a suspension bridge and a waterfall. Starting from the wayside picnic area, we'll hike east along the river to Wilson River Falls and then beyond to the bridge over Cedar Creek (lunch), returning the same way.

(Cascade Locks)

A stately forest of Big Leaf Maple and Douglas Fir provides quiet hiking on this lightly used Gorge trail. Some nice views of the Columbia River. Level 3 Qualifier.

5/30 Tom McCall Preserve (Mosier)

Hike the new trail up to Tom McCall Point and enjoy spring wildflowers and views of Mt Hood, Mt Adams and the Columbia Gorge. After the climb we'll explore the wildflowers near the ponds. Level 3 Qualifier.

6/1 Old Salmon River (Welches)

Easy stream side ramble along the scenic Old Salmon River through old growth forest. Some up and down and stairs, poles recommended. Bring money for snacks or lunch in Welches following hike.

(Govˈt Camp)

View the beauty of Little Crater Lake as we make our way past it to the Timothy Lake trail. Hike lakeside to the campgrounds where we'll stop for lunch.

This is a beautiful, shady hike along the Lewis River, featuring three large waterfalls and several smaller falls.

Pick-up location: East Portland Community Center 6/13 Larch Mountain Crater (Corbett)

Hike through old growth forest around an extinct volcanic crater. Includes a short side trip to the 4055ˈ Sherrard Point panoramic viewpoint. A small portion of the trail is rooty and rocky. Level 3 Qualifier.

Standard Hiking Supplies

Standard supplies for Metro Movers, Hike for Health, and Advanced Hike for Health

• Appropriate footwear: either hiking boots or equivalent with lugged soles for trails, sturdy shoes for walks

• Clothing layers which wick well and allow you to maintain a comfortable temperature in hot and cold conditions, preventing condensation from sweat:

• a lightweight, breathable base layer

• a middle warmth layer

• a rain jacket as third or outer layer (also serves as windbreaker) and optional rain pants

• Hat: wide-brimmed in summer, warm in winter

• Gloves: under cold weather conditions, including high altitude in spring/fall

• Water: enough for the hike length, adjusting for temperature, elevation gain and sun exposure. Recommend a base amount of 8oz per mile plus a spare pint for emergencies

• Whistle on person (e.g. on lanyard around neck)

• Sunglasses (optional, but recommended for some hikes)

• Hiking poles (optional, but recommended for some hikes)

• Optional energy snack

Additional standard supplies for Hike for Health and Advanced Hike for Health

• Traction footwear: either hiking boots or equivalent with lugged soles

• Knapsack or other means to carry hiking gear (chest and hip straps highly recommended)

• Hiking socks: either lined wool, liner sock plus outer sock, or other system that insulates and breathes and prevents hot spots and blisters

• Food for snacks on the trail and lunch, with extra for emergencies

• Personal First Aid Kit (see Hikers First Aid Kit list for more details)

• Flashlight: small, lightweight, LED recommended

• Emergency blanket/shelter

• Spare eyeglasses (optional, but recommended)

• Many additional safety items (e.g. map, compass, communication devices, Wilderness First Aid Kit) are carried by the hike leaders, so it is important that all hikers stay with the group. The hike leaders will be introduced at the trail heads.
