PSU has seven Advising Pathways that group similar majors together based on common major-changing patterns. Pathways give students the opportunity to stay with the same advisor and advising team as often as possible if they change their major. You will be assigned an advisor from the Pathway that advises your major or pre-professional track. If you are undecided about your major, you will select any Pathway that interests you and work with your assigned Pathway advisor as you explore majors.

UNDERGRADUATE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to complete at least 180 credits with a minimum of 62 upper-division credits (300- and 400-level courses). Students must also complete the requirements outlined on the following pages. Transfer credits can be applied towards these requirements. Some degrees have specific course requirements not listed below.

CREDITS MINIMUM

• Two years college-level language proficiency (completion of 3 credits in a language numbered 203 or for which 203 is a prerequisite)

• Language Requirement for Bachelor of Arts (BA): Students with no previous knowledge of a foreign language will need to complete two full years of a foreign language at the college level for a Bachelor of Arts (101103 and 201-203 in the same language). Students who already possess competence in a foreign language should discuss their options with the World Languages and Literature Department at PSU. pdx. edu/world-languages/second-languagerequirements. Students who graduated from an Oregon high school in 1997 or later must meet PSU's second language admission requirement, even if they plan to complete a BS degree.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

At Portland State University, there are two general education tracks: University Studies and the University Honors College. Students must complete one of these tracks to graduate from PSU. Students who enter PSU in winter, spring, or summer terms should consult with their advisor about where to begin with these tracks.

The Race and Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR) ensures that students are equipped with an understanding of how historically rooted and ongoing racism affects institutions in Oregon, the U.S. and the world. The courses taken to fulfill the requirement may also fulfill major, minor, University Studies, Honors and/or elective requirements.

STUDENT ENTERING PSU WITH FEWER THAN 90 COLLEGE CREDITS

• Two RESR designated courses (a minimum of 3 credits each) with a central focus on race, ethnicity and systemic oppression required.

• One course must focus on the U.S. experience; the second course must center the experiences of groups under European and U.S. colonialism and imperialism beyond the United States.

• One of the courses taken must be taken within the School of Gender, Race and Nations or be cross-listed with one of the SGRN units: Black Studies (BSt), Chicano/Latino Studies (ChLa), Indigenous Nations Studies (NAS), or Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WS).

STUDENT ENTERING PSU WITH MORE THAN 90 COLLEGE CREDITS

• One RESR designated course (a minimum of 3 credits each) with a central focus on race, ethnicity and systemic oppression required.

• The course taken by transfer students does not need to be offered within SGRN or cross-listed within one of its units.

WRITING REQUIREMENT

Students must complete 2 college-level composition courses or their approved equivalents for their baccalaureate degree requirements. Options for meeting this requirement are based on the total number of college credits earned upon admission to PSU:

• Students admitted to PSU with 0-29 college credits meet the requirement by completing the first two years of University Studies or University Honors (both approved equivalents of composition courses).

• Students admitted to PSU with 30-89 college credits meet the requirement with WR 121 (required for transfer admission) and the requisite number of Sophomore Inquiry or Honors sophomore courses determined by placement into University Studies or University Honors.

• Students admitted having earned 90 or more college credits may be satisfied by one of the following options:

• Transfer into PSU with an approved equivalent of WR 121 plus one approved composition course for which WR 121 (or its approved equivalent) is a prerequisite.

• Transfer into PSU with two approved composition courses for which WR 121 (or its approved equivalent) is a prerequisite.

• Complete WR 121 plus one additional course from the following PSU course list: WR 200, 222, 227, 228, 300, 301, 323, 327, 333, 394, 400, 420 or a 4-credit Writing Intensive Course (WIC) course. HON 360 and HON 403 are approved WICs. Composition writing courses transferred into PSU may also be considered.

• Complete any two courses from the list above.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

A major is a primary field of study, an in-depth academic focus; you develop a significant level of knowledge in a specific academic area. In order to graduate, you must complete the requirements for one of the majors offered by PSU. The number of credits required for each major varies. The specific requirements for all undergraduate majors offered by PSU are in the University Bulletin: pdx.edu/academic-affairs/psu-bulletin

ELECTIVES

Electives are courses that do not directly apply toward general education, degree, or major requirements. Most students need elective credits to meet the 180 total credit or 62 upper-division credit requirements for graduation. PSU does not require a specific number of electives; the number of elective credits needed varies

• Total credits required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree = 180

• Total upper-division credits required = 62

• Minimum credits required in residence at PSU = 45 of last 75, or 150 total

• Maximum number of two-year college credits allowed towards degree = 124

• Maximum number of Pass/No Pass (P/NP) credits allowed towards degree = 45

• Maximum number of vocational/technical, PE, cooperative education credits allowed towards degree = 12 each

The University Career Center provides support to all PSU students and alumni in all aspects of their career development including: exploration, preparation and planning, job and internship searching, and making career changes and transitions through individual appointments, drop ins, workshops, classes and extensive online resources. They also maintain the job and internship portal, Handshake, and coordinate several career fairs and employer visits each academic year.

There are almost 2000 student job positions across campus in almost every office and department. Working on campus is a great way to gain experience while pursuing your educational goals. FITNESS & WELLBEING

Campus Rec offers cardio, endurance, strength, mind/ body, and dance fitness classes led by certified and motivational instructors. Our affordable personal training program brings clients closer to their goals, and our wellbeing team engages the entire campus community with annual events and programs such as Walktober. The Rec Center features an indoor track and nearly 200 pieces of cardio and strength equipment.

GROUP X FITNESS CLASSES

Campus Rec's group exercise (Group X) program provides a wide variety of FREE, inclusive, and accessible group fitness classes to the PSU community that promote joyful movement, build participant confidence, and enhance wellbeing.

AQUATICS & SAFETY

Make a splash with Campus Rec’s Aquatics program. De-stress, exercise, and have fun in our state-of-theart, 25-yard pool and 10-person spa. Programs offered include lap swim, open rec swim, and special events that are available to Campus Rec members for free. Adult swim clinics, youth swim lessons, and First Aid/CPR/ AED and lifeguard certification courses are available for a fee.

INTRAMURALS

Intramural Sports provide Campus Rec members of all skill levels with opportunities to participate in sports, make new friends, and be active in a safe, fun environment. Offerings change every term and include: basketball, soccer (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, slowpitch softball, kickball, cornhole, table tennis, and pickleball.

OUTDOOR PROGRAM

The Outdoor Program provides opportunities for guided outdoor trips, workshops and certification courses, outdoor rental gear at affordable rates, and an indoor Climbing Center. Whether you are looking to embark on an adventure or learn a new outdoor skill, join us in exploring the wild side of Oregon.

REC CLUBS

This student-led program provides opportunities for recreation and intercollegiate competition between students of all skill and ability levels. Participate in your favorite sports and activities, build community, and practice transferable leadership skills in a safe and supportive environment. Our 30+ clubs are educational, accessible, organized by students, and funded by student fees. Join an existing Rec Club or start a brand new club of your own.

Campus Rec employees work collaboratively to provide a welcoming and inclusive place to play for the entire Portland State Community. CLASSES & REGISTRATION REGISTRATION

All of the important tools for planning your course registration are found in the Registration Hub which you can access through myPSU (my.pdx.edu).

Planning Your Schedule: Class schedules for future terms are available online approximately two weeks before registration for the term begins. You can use the Schedule Planner in the Registration Hub to build your optimal course schedule based on the classes you need at the times you want.

For academic year planning, the Course Planning Guide (CPG) is a projected list of courses to be offered during specific quarters of the academic year. Listings are subject to change throughout the year, and you should check back periodically for the latest projections. The CPG can be viewed at cpg.sa.pdx.edu.

Registration Holds: Registration holds are placed on student records for past-due accounts, missing measles documentation, missing admissions data, or other reasons. Information about holds and how to clear them is available in MyPSU: my.pdx.edu

When to Register: Students begin registering for classes during the pre-term registration period and may make changes to their registration well after the term begins. Pre-term registration dates are prioritized according to student class standings (starting with Graduate students), determined by the number of credits, earned as follows:

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES

Registering for classes at PSU is done through the registration hub. Follow the steps below to register for classes:

1. Go to my.pdx.edu and sign in using your Student (Odin) Account.

2. Go to the Academic Dashboard, in the Classes section, select Registration Hub.

3. Select the Register for Classes option.

4. The Select a Term page will load. Select the term you wish to view and click Continue.

REGISTER USING THE CLASS SEARCH FEATURE

1. In the Find Classes tab, you can search by subject and course number, keywords, title, or select the Advanced Search for more search options.

Sophomore 45–89

Freshman 1–44

To increase the chances of securing a place in your preferred classes, you should register as soon as possible once your registration queue opens.

Online Registration Hours: Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. for each registration group. Subsequently, registration is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the last day to add classes each term.

Registration Deadlines: The Academic Calendar (pdx.edu/ registration/calendar) lists priority registration schedules and deadlines for adding and dropping classes, making grade option changes, withdrawing from classes, and refunding percentages. These dates are important because they determine the extent of financial obligation incurred by registration activity, and they determine if and how a class registration will be recorded on a student’s transcript.

2. The Advanced Search option allows you to search by day and time, online or hybrid course delivery, Junior Cluster or other course attributes to better filter your options.

3. Select or type your search criteria into the necessary boxes. After you have entered your search criteria, select Search. A list of sections will load.

Possible Error Messages

CLOSED SECTION: The class is full, but you may be able to register for the class with a departmental override if there is no waitlist. Contact the department for its override procedure.

CORQ_PH 107 REG: The class has a required co-requisite for which you must register at the same time that you register for this class.

PREQ: The class has a prerequisite that has not been completed.

Closed Classes: A class that is full will say “Full” in red in the status column. However, seats on the waitlist may be available.

Available Seats: Hovering over the information in the Status column will show you how many seats are available in the class or on the waitlist.

MAJOR RESTRICTION: You may only register for this class if you are majoring in this department.

TIME CONFLICT: The class for which you are trying to register overlaps with another class for which you already registered.

The number of people registered for a class and the number of seats remaining are an estimate.

4. Select Add in the far right column to register for a course. The course will appear in Pending status in your registration Summary

REGISTER USING THE CRN (COURSE REFERENCE NUMBER)

1. If you already know the CRN for a course you want to take, you can add the class directly by CRN.

2. On the Register for Classes page, enter the CRN for the class and click Add to Summary.

3. Follow the steps to submit from your registration Summary.

5. Add the rest of your courses, then select Submit.

6. If there are no errors, the Status column will update to Registered. If there are errors, they will display in a pop-up window.

DROP A CLASS

Dropping a class may be necessary if you accidentally register for the wrong class or section. Students must initiate all drops and withdrawals from a course. It is your responsibility to drop or withdraw properly by the deadline dates in the Academic Calendar.

You may drop a course online with no record of the course on your transcript up to the end of the second week of the

term during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. (As a courtesy, you should notify the instructor that you intend to drop.) From the beginning of the third week up to the end of the seventh week, you may withdraw online or by using a Special Registration form, but a “W” will be recorded on your transcript. Follow the steps below to drop a class:

1. In the Register for Classes page, locate the Action dropdown menu.

2. Click the Action drop-down menu, select Drop Course WEB, Withdraw Course WEB, or Drop/Delete Pre-Term Web depending upon the available options and then select Submit. Once you select Submit, you will not be able to cancel the submission. If you mistakenly drop a class, you must re-register for it before the add deadline.

DEGREE AUDIT REPORTING SYSTEM (DARS)

The Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) is a valuable tool that helps you track your progress towards your degree. This report applies the courses you are currently enrolled in and the courses you have completed (including any transfer courses accepted by PSU), to the graduation requirements.

How to Run a Degree Audit

1. Log in to my.pdx.edu and go to the Academics dashboard

2. From the Academic Planning section, select Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS)

3. Select Submit an Audit

4. Select Portland State University PSU Undergrad/ Postbac, then Continue

5. Select your Degree Program (ex: Architecture - Bachelor of Arts)

6. Select the Catalog Year

7. Select Run Audit

GET ON A CLASS WAITLIST

Getting on a class Waitlist can help you get into a closed class if someone drops the class. This option permits a department to obtain a chronological list of names of students who wish to be considered for the next available seat in the class.

◉ If you receive a message that a course is full, but a Waitlist is available, select Waitlist WEB from the Action drop down menu and then select Submit.

Once on a Waitlist, you will NOT be automatically registered for the class if a seat becomes available. Once a seat becomes available, a notification will be sent to the first person on the Waitlist via their PSU email account, letting them know they can register for the course. You have exactly 24 hours from the time this email is generated to register for the reserved seat. Instructions on how to add a course from the Waitlist when a seat becomes available will be contained in the notification email. Once 24 hours have lapsed, you will automatically be dropped from the Waitlist. If you still need the course, you will need to add yourself back to the Waitlist.

SPECIAL REGISTRATION

In certain cases, you may find that you need or want to take a course but cannot register for it online. Special registration processes, such as by-arrangements or departmental approvals, are handled in person at the Registration Counter in the Student Services Lounge in Fariborz Maseeh Hall (FMH).

DARS audits are used as unofficial advising tools and are not intended to be a promise or guarantee of progress toward a degree, major, minor, or certificate. Any PSU advisor can help you interpret this report and understand where you stand in completing your requirements to graduate.

Graduation refers to actually receiving a degree once a student has been certified by the University as having met all degree requirements. Upon certification, the degree is awarded and noted in myPSU so that it displays on PSU transcripts. In order to graduate, you must follow the steps to graduate.

Commencement is the ceremony where students, families, friends, and the PSU community come together to celebrate your academic accomplishments. The commencement ceremony is open to any student who has applied to graduate, notified the Commencement Office that they intend to participate, rented the required regalia, and shown up at the designated time on the day of the ceremony. Commencement ceremonies occur annually in June.

Ceremonies are available to watch via livestream broadcast. A recording of each ceremony will be available online after the live ceremonies.

PSU requires any student taking five or more credits per term to maintain comprehensive medical insurance coverage. If you have your own health insurance, including the OHP, you can submit an application to waive the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan for the current academic year. Waivers must be submitted every academic year (an academic year goes from Fall through Summer). If you do not have health insurance or your health insurance does not meet the criteria for the waiver application, you will automatically be enrolled in the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan and charged to your student account.

MEASLES VACCINE REQUIREMENT

PSU’s Center for Student Health & Counseling (SHAC) is a comprehensive health and wellness center that provides high quality, accessible medical, counseling, dental, and health promotion and education services. Students who are taking 5+ non-restricted differential tuition credits pay the Student Health Fee. They are therefore eligible for SHAC services regardless of the type of medical insurance they carry and have no office visit fee for health services and counseling services. All students taking 1+ credit can access SHAC Dental Services on a fee-forservice basis. Dental providers are licensed professionals and services are typically 30-50% lower than other private clinics.

PSU is home to Little Vikings Flexible Childcare and Baby Vikings Flexible Childcare. These small childcare centers provide flexible care for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Baby Vikings has four full-time spaces and four flexible spots for short term or walk-in care for children ages 6 weeks to 24 months. Little Vikings provide a walk-in, reserved and occasional care for children. You can reserve care for the entire term, up to 5 hours per day and 20 hours per week.

PSU’s three anchors of sustainability are through our Student Sustainability Center, Planning and Sustainability Office, and the Institute for Sustainable Solutions.

GET INVOLVED

The first step to getting involved is joining the Emerging Sustainability Leaders Program. Students who sign up gain access to opportunities to enhance their sustainability professional development skills and form community. These include unique workshops, social events and exclusive first access to Student Sustainability Center field trips. Student Sustainability Center programs are designed by and for students who want to create meaningful change. The SSC offers one day events, sustainability leadership, and professional development opportunities. These include the Sustainability Volunteer Program with gardens, cultural sustainability, and waste reduction.

PSU also provides Water Bottle Refilling Stations around campus to reduce waste from disposable plastic bottles, recycling of electronic waste, a reuse program to redistribute donated office and school supplies to the campus community, a Surplus Property Program to redistribute reusable office and classroom furniture to PSU departments, the Chuck-itfor-Charity move out program collects reusable items from students and donates them to charity. trayless dining in Victors Dining Hall to reduce food waste by 25-30% per person, and limiting printing of materials such as the course catalog, course schedule, and directory.

This quota does not carry over to subsequent academic terms, and resets on the Thursday prior to the first day of each term. Any student that goes over the term’s printing credit quota during the term will have a bill show up on their student account after this reset date.
