NO PLACE LIKE HOME Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first seven MLS seasons.

Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. The streak ranks as the third-longest all-time in MLS history.

HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization.

A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch.

Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas.

Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012.

Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996.

After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club.

The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel.

Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders.

In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes.

Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

Midfielder Diego Valeri tallied a goal and an assist, while defender Bill Tuiloma recorded his first career MLS goal in the match.

Scoring on the road With the goal, Valeri has scored 10 goals away from home since the start of the 2017 season, which ranks tied for the most in the league with New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips. As a team, the Timbers have scored 28 goals on the road since the start of 2017.

Timbers milestones Making his third consecutive start, defender Bill Tuiloma scored his first career MLS goal when he found the back of the net in the 59th minute of play. With the goal, Tuiloma is the second New Zealand international to score a goal for the Timbers in club history across all eras (since 1975).

Key plays Remaining on the front foot, Blanco was fouled inside the box in the 17th minute after receiving a pass from Valeri. The referee initially blew the whistle and gave Blanco a second caution for simulation, however, the play was reviewed using VAR and Portland was awarded a penalty kick and Blanco’s caution was rescinded. Valeri stepped to the spot and converted, burying his shot into the far left corner of the goal to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.

Portland came close to doubling its lead on two separate occasions in the first five minutes of the second half. Working the ball around near the edge of Orlando City’s box, midfielder Cristhian Paredes quickly slipped a ball into the box to Blanco, who made a run in behind the Orlando City defense. Running onto Paredes’ pass, Blanco fired a shot that bounced off the underside of the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, Valeri received a pass inside the box on the right side and fired a shot low towards the left corner that bounced off the post.

The Timbers increased their lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute off a set piece. Valeri delivered a pinpoint free kick into the box from the right flank and Tuiloma rose up above two Orlando City defenders, sending a powerful header into the back of the net.

Orlando City answered by tallying three goals in a seven-minute span to claim a 3-2 lead in the final 10 minutes of the match. Forward Chris Mueller cut the lead to 2-1 in the 80th minute, directing a header off a corner kick from midfielder Yoshimar Yotú into the right side netting. Less than two minutes later, Orlando City received a controversial penalty kick and midfielder Sacha Kljestan leveled the score, placing his shot into the left corner of the goal. Forward Dom Dwyer gave Orlando City the lead in the 87th minute, converting from close range near the right post.

Diego Valeri tallied his 60th career goal in the match, becoming the 39th MLS player all-time to reach that mark and the ninth active player in MLS with 60 regular-season goals.

Valeri recorded his first assist of the season. Valeri has 54 assists in his Portland career, which is most in MLS since his debut in 2013.

The match was the 13th time that Valeri has recorded both a goal and an assist in MLS, which is the most in club history.

Valeri also tallied his third career goal in four matches against Orlando City.

Bill Tuiloma scored his first goal for the Timbers. He is second player from New Zealand to score a goal for the Timbers across all eras of club history (since 1975), joining current general manager and president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson.

Andy Polo completed 43 of his 44 attempted passes. Polo is the fifth player in Timbers MLS history to have one or fewer unsuccessful passes when attempting 40 or more in a single match.

The match against Orlando marks the end of the Timbers’ five-game road swing to start the season. During that stretch, Portland traveled nearly 20,000 miles, facing the LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, FC Dallas, Chicago Fire and Orlando City SC.

We got a little sloppy towards the end of the first half. But then we came in the second half with different mindset in keeping the ball and creating chances. PORTLAND TIMBERS VS MINNESOTA UNITED FC SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2018 SCOUTING MINNESOTA UNITED Currently in its second season in Major League Soccer, Minnesota United FC enters Saturday’s game after a bye weekend in league play. Prior to its bye, United FC lost its previous two league games, falling 1-0 to Atlanta United on March 31 and 3-0 to the New York Red Bulls on March 24 after winning two straight games prior to those results. The team’s two wins this season occurred in backto-back 2-1 victories against Orlando City SC on March 10 and the Chicago Fire on March 17. United FC lost one if its key attacking pieces for the season when midfielder Kevin Molino suffered an ACL injury in the win against Orlando City, the club has recently bolstered its roster with dynamic attacking players such as Darwin Quintero and Alexi Gomez.

FACING MINNESOTA Saturday’s match marks the third league meeting between Portland and Minnesota United FC, since United FC joined the league as an expansion club in the 2017 season. In the previous two matches, both teams split the results, winning each of their home games in 2017. In Portland’s home opener in 2017, the team recorded a strong 5-1 win against Minnesota United at Providence Park, before falling in a 3-2 loss against United FC at TCF Bank Stadium later that season.

CLUB INTEGRATION In T2’s most recent league match, a 3-0 win over OKC Energy FC on April 7, seven first-team players started in the game, playing a role in T2’s second win in their first five games to start the season. Goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh, defenders Modou Jadama and Vytas, midfielder Victor Arboleda and forwards Foster Langsdorf and Jeremy Ebobisse all started in the match, with Langsdorf and Arboleda both finding the back of the net. The finish marked Arboleda’s second of the season, while Langsdorf recorded his first professional goal.

PROVIDENCE PARK EXPANSION Providence Park is currently in the midst of an extensive stadium construction that will add approximately 4,000 new seats and a striking new street-level colonnade along the eastern side of the stadium. As a function of the ongoing construction, access to parts of Providence Park will change or be off-limits for parts of the season. The current construction is phase one of the Timbers’ two-year plan to renovate the stadium, with the stadium renovation set to be completed during the 2019 MLS campaign.

DEBUT GOAL Playing in his third straight MLS game for the Timbers, defender Bill Tuiloma recorded his first career MLS goal when he found the back of the net against Orlando City SC on April 8. Tuiloma scored Portland’s second goal of the match against the Lions when he produced a powerful header from inside the box in the 59th minute of play.

REIGNING MVP Midfielder Diego Valeri enters the 2018 MLS season as the reigning Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player, after becoming the first Timbers player to receive MLS MVP honors following a record-setting 2017 campaign.
