HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

Three different players scored in the win for Portland, with defender Alvas Powell and forward Fanendo Adi each scoring their first goals of the season, while midfielder Diego Valeri also found the back of the net for a third consecutive game. Timbers milestone With an assist on Adi’s goal in the 74th minute of play, Valeri recorded his 55th assist in league play since joining the Timbers in 2013. With the assist, Valeri ranks tied with John Bain for the most assists across all eras in club history (since 1975). Home form With the 3-2 win, the Timbers have won seven straight regular-season matches at Providence Park, dating back to the 2017 campaign. Additionally, Portland extended its record in MLS home openers to 5-0-3, with the Timbers winning their last three home openers at Providence Park. Key plays Portland opened the scoring in the 20th minute of play when Powell received a pass from Mabiala, before driving past three Minnesota United defenders and blasting a powerful effort inside the near post. Three minutes later, the Timbers found their second goal of the game when Powell drove a dangerous cross into the box toward Valeri. Reading the play quickly, Valeri took a clever touch to push the ball past goalkeeper Matt Lampson and into the far corner in the 23rd minute of play. The Timbers regained a two-goal lead when Adi scored his first goal of the season. The play occurred when Blanco produced a diagonal cross into the box for Valeri, who headed the ball back toward the penalty area for Paredes. Dating back to 2017, Portland has won seven consecutive regular-season matches at home, which ties a club record in MLS play originally set Aug.7, 2016-March 18, 2017. In MLS home openers, the Timbers are 5-0-3, having won three straight. Dating back to the Timbers’ pre-MLS era, Portland is undefeated in its last 15 home openers with a 10-0-5 record. In the three MLS matches between the two clubs, Portland and Minnesota have combined for 16 goals. That 5.3 goals-per-match average is the highest amount of any fixture in MLS since 2010 (minimum two matches). Alvas Powell scored his first goal of the season and the fifth of his Timbers career. Fanendo Adi scored his first goal of the season and the 52nd of his Timbers career, which ranks as the second-most in club history. Diego Valeri scored a goal for the third consecutive match, becoming the third MLS player this season with a goal in three straight matches. Valeri now has 61 league goals for Portland, extending his mark as leading goal-scorer in club history. Cristhian Paredes recorded two assists in the match, marking his first career MLS assists. It is the first multi-assist game for a Timbers player this season and the 17th in the Timbers MLS era. Larrys Mabiala recorded his first MLS assist. Valeri recorded his 55th career assist with the Timbers, placing him in a tie with John Bain for most assists in club history across all eras (since 1975). Valeri scored a goal and recorded an assist in the same match for the 14th time in his MLS career. Powell scored a goal and recorded an assist in the same match for the second time in an MLS game. The other occasion was Sept. 7, 2014, against the San Jose Earthquakes. Paredes, Andy Polo, Bill Tuiloma, Andrés Flores and Samuel Armenteros each made their home debuts in the match.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On the first home game and win of the season and the feeling… “Fantastic. We’ve been working very hard to achieve this result. We were looking forward to coming home. The past two games away we felt that we did a good job to earn three points, but the energy tonight from the fans gave us what we needed. To fight all the way to the end and get the result that we needed. I thought it was a very good first half and then never give up and continue to work throughout the entire match. [It] was a very important win for us.” On a sense of relief in getting the win and having the road trip behind them… “Definitely. Very content to get our first win, to get three points. I think those games before, we have to remember. The players can forget, but the coaching staff won’t forget about it. The coaching staff will continue to analyze. To continue to see what we learn from those games. To continue to make the team grow. Look at the game today and keep working on the team. But I see a team working together, a team getting better game after game and overall it was very good today.” Portland Timbers forward Fanendo Adi On scoring and getting some confidence back… “The confidence has always been there, but of course it’s always good to score the goal. I’m always humble and relaxed and when you keep working hard in training, things are going to turn out to be as you want it to be. Today is just one of those days and I’m excited to be on the scoresheet today.” On how much of the victory is excitement versus relief… “It’s a lot of excitement and relief because we’ve been on the road for five games and it’s been a tough amount of weeks. To come back home and in front of our fans and give them this win we’ve all been waiting for at the start of the season it’s just incredible for us, the players, and the coaching staff is going to bring a lot of confidence to us.”
