LAST MATCH RECAP Defender Nat Borchers registered the game-winning goal in the final seconds of second-half stoppage time and the Timbers earned their second consecutive win and third straight shutout with a 1-0 victory against Real Salt Lake before 20,338 fans on Aug. 15 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The shutout win marked Portland’s league-leading 11th clean sheet of the season and moved the Timbers (11-8-6, 39pts) into fourth place in the Western Conference standings through 25 games. Portland is just four points shy of the first-place LA Galaxy (43pts).

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first four MLS seasons. Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his third season with the club in 2015 after guiding the Portland Timbers to record-setting campaigns in his first two years in MLS. Guiding the team to an impressive turnaround season and the club’s first-ever MLS postseason appearance in 2013, Porter helped direct a record-setting offense in 2014 as the Timbers netted 61 regular-season goals, a club record across all eras. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccerrelated figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland. The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year award winner, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS head coaches with a 37-22-34 mark (.581) after leading Portland to double-digits wins in each of his first two seasons. Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers have made Providence Park one of the toughest places to play in the league, registering an impressive regularseason mark of 23-5-18 at Providence Park over the last two-plus seasons. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while compiling one of the highest point totals (44) across the final two-thirds of the regular season – recording the highest goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history. Portland also made its first appearance in CONCACAF Champions League, contesting matches against Alpha United of Guyana and C.D. Olimpia of Honduras during the competition’s group stage. During Porter’s first season as head coach in 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS singleseason record 11 home shutouts. In 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a player at Indiana, he was a three-year captain and led the Hoosiers to four conference titles. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella. ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.

UPCOMING MILESTONES

Houston enters Friday’s match after sustaining a 2-0 defeat against New England Revolution on Aug. 15 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. First-year Dynamo head coach Owen Coyle’s side is 3-2-2 over its last seven regular-season matches, but has registered a 2-6-4 overall record on the road this season and has dropped four straight road games across all competitions since July 18. Houston is led by forward Will Bruin with nine goals in 23 appearances, while forward Giles Barnes has registered six goals and two assists this season.

With his next assist, midfielder Jack Jewsbury will move into a tie for 10th place overall on the Timbers all-time career assists chart with Timbers Ring of Honor member Jimmy Conway (1978-80). Jewsbury currently sits in 11th place with 15 assists for Portland since 2011. Additionally, Jewsbury’s next appearance will mark his 325th career MLS game. Jewsbury ranks 17th all-time in MLS in career appearances.

WINNING AT HOME The Timbers rank among league leaders with a 7-1-4 overall record at Providence Park during the 2015 season, including a Timbers MLS-club record tying streak of five straight wins from May 27-July 5. Portland is unbeaten in its last eight regular-season home games since May 2. Portland has compiled one of the league’s best home records with an overall mark of 23-5-18 (.696) over the last two-plus seasons since 2013. With his next goal, forward Fanendo Adi will tie the Timbers MLS single-season club record for goals in a season (11), set by midfielder Diego Valeri in 2014. Portland’s home unbeaten streak is the second-longest active home unbeaten streak in MLS this season, behind only Sporting Kansas City’s current 12-game home unbeaten streak.

CREATING CHANCES The Timbers entered the week tied for first overall in MLS with 264 chances created (including assists).
