The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first eight MLS seasons. Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers battled the LA Galaxy to a 1-1 draw before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on Saturday afternoon, extending their unbeaten streak to seven matches in regular-season play, dating back to April 14. Midfielder Diego Valeri scored the Timbers’ lone goal in the second half, tallying his team-high sixth goal of the campaign. Unbeaten in seven With the 1-1 result, the Timbers (6-3-3, 21pts) are unbeaten in their last seven matches (6-0-1) in league play since defeating Minnesota United FC 3-2 at Providence Park on April 14. Portland’s seven-game streak ranks as the club’s longest unbeaten streak since the Timbers produced a nine-game unbeaten run from May 22-July 17, 2016. Milestone watch Playing 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw, midfielder Diego Chara made his 215th regularseason appearance in MLS since joining the Timbers in the 2011 campaign. Chara’s 215 games played rank as the most in club history across all eras (since 1975), with the midfielder surpassing former Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe’s mark of 214 games played. Key plays Portland created its first chance early in the game when Chara slipped a pass for midfielder Andrés Flores in space in behind the Galaxy defense, with the midfielder hitting a shot that forced a strong save from goalkeeper David Bingham in the third minute of play. The Galaxy opened the scoring, taking the lead in the 20th minute, when forward Chris Pontius received a well-played through ball from Emmanuel Boateng just inside the 18-yard box, before carefully placing his effort into the far corner. Entering the second half with a strong push, the Timbers leveled the score in the 57th minute of play when Valeri converted from the penalty spot. Portland earned the penalty after Flores broke free on a convincing run and was brought down inside the area by two Galaxy defenders. With seven minutes left in the game, the Timbers provided another chance when forward Fanendo Adi curled a cross into the box, finding Tuiloma for a header that forced a diving save from Bingham at the far post in the 83rd minute.

Saturday’s game marked the 130th consecutive sellout for the Timbers at Providence Park. The Timbers are unbeaten in their last seven matches, marking the club’s longest streak since a nine-game unbeaten run from May 22-July 17, 2016. The 1-1 draw against the Galaxy ended Portland’s six-game winning streak (club record in MLS play) and 10-game home winning streak (second-longest for any club in MLS history). Portland finished with a season-high 10 shots on target against the Galaxy, which also ranks tied for the fourth-most shots on goal by the Timbers in MLS play. Midfielder Diego Chara played in his 215th league match for the Timbers, setting a new club record for the most matches played by a Timbers player since 1975. Diego Valeri recorded his sixth goal in 2018, marking the fifth time Valeri has scored at least six goals in a season. Valeri is one of four MLS players with six or more goals in five of the last six seasons along with Bradley Wright-Phillips, Chris Wondolowski and Dom Dwyer. Portland’s goal also marked Valeri’s 12th penalty-kick finish since the beginning of the 2016 season, which is tied for the most in MLS with David Villa over the last three seasons.

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2018 ABOUT THE U.S. OPEN CUP Entering its 105th year of competition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup features a tiered-bracket and single-game knockout format. This year’s U.S. Open Cup features 94 teams. As in 2017, teams will be paired geographically from the First Round through the Fourth Round. After the Fourth Round, a geographically based random draw will take place to determine the Round of 16 matchups and set a fixed bracket to the Final, scheduled for Sept. 26. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer’s national club championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 104 consecutive years dating back to 1914. This year’s winner will earn $250,000, a spot in the 2019-20 CONCACAF Champions League tournament and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will take home $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will earn a $15,000 cash prize. Sporting Kansas City is the defending U.S. Open Cup champion, defeating the New York Red Bulls 2-1 on Sept. 20, 2017. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
