LAST MATCH RECAP Despite scoring in the fourth minute of the match, the Timbers fell 2-1 against FC Dallas before 10,381 fans at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday night after surrendering a pair of goals early in the second half. Pressing FC Dallas early in the game, the Timbers opened the scoring when midfielder Diego Valeri scored his second goal in the last three games and third of the 2016 season, carefully finishing forward Lucas Melano’s pass into the bottom left corner.

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first six MLS seasons. Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. The streak ranks as the third-longest all-time in MLS history.

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fourth season with the club in 2016 after signing a long-term contract extension on Jan. 27, 2016. Since joining the Timbers in 2013, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS coaches with a record of 44-30-39 (.561), leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit wins in each of his first three seasons. Over Porter’s first four seasons, the Timbers have lost the fewest games (30) of any MLS team and have compiled regular-season point totals of 57 (2013), 49 (2014) and 53 (2015). Additionally, since 2013, Portland’s combined point total (171) ranks as the fifth most in MLS, behind only the LA Galaxy (184), Seattle Sounders FC (180), New York Red Bulls (179) and FC Dallas (178). Portland has also registered a league-best 35 shutouts in that span, while the club’s 14 road wins over the last four seasons rank as the most in MLS over that span. The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year, Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied San Jose Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranks fourth among active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the LA Galaxy’s Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Seattle’s Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 201617), finished in the top three in the Western Conference in two of his first three seasons and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland. During Porter’s first season with Portland in 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history, finishing the regular season atop the Western Conference table. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record, 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while recording the best goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license and an NSCAA advanced national diploma, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a four-time All-Big Ten selection and three-year captain at Indiana, Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles and two College Cup appearances. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (7) and Jake (5), and a daughter, Stella (4).
