HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 58-42-46, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (6237-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (200612). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT MONTREAL IMPACT SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2017 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS VS FC DALLAS (T 2-2) BOX SCORE

MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers drew Atlanta United FC 1-1 before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans on Sunday afternoon. Portland defender Liam Ridgewell scored his first goal of the 2017 MLS campaign, finishing a header in the 50th minute of play, while midfielder David Guzmán tallied his fourth assist of the season. With the result, the Timbers (5-3-3, 18pts) extend their record after a loss to 20-8-12 in league play since the 2013 season. Additionally, Portland is unbeaten in its last five home matches against Eastern Conference opponents, dating back to the 2016 MLS season. Following an early second-half finish from Atlanta United (3-4-3, 12pts), with midfielder Julian Gressel scoring from just outside the box in the 46th minute of play, the Timbers found the equalizer just four minutes later when Ridgewell converted a header from a set piece. With the Timbers earning a free kick on the far right side of the field, Guzmán curled a cross into the box that went untouched by the Atlanta defense, landing at the back post to Ridgewell, who quickly whipped a close-range header into the back of the net in the 50th minute. Outshooting Atlanta United 13-7, Portland created several additional chances to score throughout the match. In the 60th minute, the Timbers produced a close chance when forward Fanendo Adi, who made his 100th league appearance in Sunday’s match, fired a left-footed effort from outside the box, forcing a diving save from Kann, while midfielder Darren Mattocks’ header forced a goal-line clearance from the Atlanta defense just seven minutes later. In the 73rd minute, Portland created a flurry of chances when Adi opened up and curled a low strike to the far post, forcing to Kann to quickly push it wide. With the ball landing in the path of Sebastián Blanco on the edge of the six, the midfielder played the ball back across to Adi, whose point-blank shot was deflected wide for a corner. With Portland pushing for the game-winning goal late in the match, Guzmán came close to giving the home side the lead in the 90th minute, hitting a strong right-footed effort from the left side of the box, rattling the inside of the upper post. Next up, the Timbers will travel to face the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo on Saturday, May 20. Beginning at 12 noon (Pacific), the game against Montreal will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter On how he would evaluate the game… “Tight game. Two good teams. First I’d like to credit Atlanta; I thought they played well today. They have some good players. I thought in particular [Miguel] Almirón – was very lively – he found a lot of the ball. He was very dangerous on the day. A good side. Pretty even game overall. Obviously they had the better of the possession. We had the better of the chances. Disappointed to give up that early goal in the start of the second half. But from there the next 44 minutes was all us. I really thought we left it on the field. We gave it everything we had. I thought we were going to get the goal to win the game. Obviously we pulled one back and had a couple bounces that maybe go different, the post, a couple other times when the ball is in the box where we don’t quite get the half chance off. A couple through balls that just don’t quite get through. Again you’ve got to credit them. I thought their backline played pretty well today. Obviously disappointing not to get the three. We’ll take the point. Not satisfied with that at all and now we’ve got to make up for that on the road.” Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell On scoring the equalizer… “Long time coming, so obviously glad to get the goal and obviously drag us back into the game. Obviously sad we couldn’t go and get the second one to win the game, but a hard-fought draw.” Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri General thoughts on the match… “We left everything on the field and that’s why we scored the goal. We almost won the game in the last part of the second half. In that side, we’re very happy, but obviously disappointed with the result because at home we needed three points because now we have a couple more games on the road. We need to get points on the road.”
